A Royal Good Morning
"Slippery Ice"
A Sam K. Spade story
Chapter 3

It was after midnight when Mitch and I arrived at Sea Treasure fish market. We parked down the street and made our way through a series of alleys. Two trash cans were blocking our way to the back door. Good thing Mitch is a muscle cat! He made fast work moving those cans. The lock on the door was just recently replaced,it was no challenge for me though. I never met a lock I couldn't pick! Mitch put the cans back in front of the door just incase anyone pawed by and might notice they were moved. Once inside,we headed to the back room. There were empty wooden crates everywhere. Mitch went about stacking them for us to reach the ceiling. I was finding out fast that having a junior partner who was a body builder was one of my better moves. We scaled the crates and reached the ceiling tiles. I carefully slid the ceiling tile to the side.A minute later we were moving with our best catlike stealth across the ceiling to the jewelry store. The police had left pawprint dust everywhere,we needed to erase our prints before we left. Mitch lifted another ceiling tile to the side and I was peering at the safe in the back room. I saw a red right on the floor and knew crossing it would bring us unwanted company in the form of cops. We methodically clawed our way down the wall careful not to touch anything. We arrived at the top of the safe, from there it was just a quick hop to the floor. I carefully got to work on opening the safe. After a quick crack of my paws I was ready. With my ear to the safe I carefully turned the dial, almost immediately the first tumbler clicked, then the next, and finally the last! "You've got to teach me that!" Mitch meowed."In time partner." I told him. We opened the safe, trays of jeweled collars and loose gems were secured there.Looking through them I was struck by the fact that they were just glass! Did I mention that Dancer also taught me to spot a fake rock almost across the room? Good old Dancer! Hmm, either the good Mr Stiles wasn't too forthcoming with the amount of the rocks taken, or Jack the owner had some explaining to do. Mitch and I carefully put the trays back in the safe just as they were. We jumped up to the top of the safe,Mitch gave me boost and I was pawing my way back to the fish market.Careful to brush away our paw prints on the way,Mitch and I found ourselves sliding back the ceiling tile and scaling down the wooden crate ladder.
