For Mac users, the best and simplest program is Fetch; for PC users, the most commonly used and simplest is WS-FTP. Both are about $25free to educational or charitable organizationsand can be downloaded directly from the Internet at TUCOWS or download. These sites collect and allow you to download software from all over the world.
FTP programs take a copy of the file on your hard drive and move it onto a server, a computer that hosts your pages and makes them available to Web browsers. Unless you register a domain name, your address will be the name of the server with a slash and the name of your folder after it.
Name your first page "index.html" to make it load first.
5. Double-check everything: The Web is a persnickety beast. You could be one letter or slash off and it won't work. Have you checked every line of code? If the file name has lowercase letters, does the image source tag use lower case letters too? Do your files end in .html or .htm? Both are correct but should be consistent. Did you type the exact name of the image file? Is every slash, bracket and letter correct?
Is it worth it? Long Island, N.Y.-based Web designer Jeffrey Peron says the homepage for his son gets hardly any hits, but the homepage for his cat Cosmo had its 1,000-hit counter turn over three times in the first year. Cosmo has received email from countries as far away as Brazil, Germany and South Africa.
