Los Angeles-based Fancy Publications Inc. published CAT FANCY beginning with the November/December 1975 issue and Norman Ridker as publisher. Smith remained as editor through the January/February 1976 issue, after which Michael Criss replaced him as managing editor.
The challenge of picking something up and bringing it back to life and making it successful really appealed to me, Ridker said. We worked very hard. The readership supported us in the early days. The magazine had a loyal following and fan base. Its been great fun and among my fondest memories working with the community and going to cat shows.
Readers supported the reorganization. Welcome back! I was so overjoyed to receive CAT FANCY again. I'm glad you're back on your feet again and look forward to many, many years of future reading enjoyment. Millions of us cat people need your magazine and wish you every success with your reorganization, wrote Elizabeth Szumski of Brooklyn, N.Y., in the April 1976 issue.
The 80s: Cat Boom
The December 7, 1981 issue of Time magazine featured a cat on its cover, reflecting the cats burgeoning popularity.
In the late 80s and early 90s, people became more mobile and suburban, and began to live in smaller spaces, said Debra Phillips-Donaldson, CAT FANCY editor from November 1992 through December 1996. Cats are more convenient pets for these lifestyle changes and became much more popular.
CAT FANCY grew too. Beginning with the October 1979 issue, the magazine was published monthly and doubled in pages by 1989. In 1982, a double-page poster on heavier paper stock became a permanent fixture with the September issue. This was also the first issue available on newsstands in addition to subscriptions.
In 1987, the cover tagline changed to: The Magazine for Responsible Owners, a focus that has been with the publication ever since. Linda Lewis served as editor from December 1978 through February 1989.Page 1 | 2 | 3 | 4
