The Litterbox Cover-Up

When a cat doesn't cover her feces in the box, it might indicate that she is ill.

J. Veronika Kiklevich, DVM

Q. My cat is about 18 months old and whenever she uses the litterbox she doesn't cover up what she leaves behind, which can be smelly at times. I'm not sure if she's doing this on purpose or if she doesn't know. What can I do to get her back in the habit of covering things up?

A. Often this behavior is a sign of illness. The malodorous feces may be the result of the carbohydrate type in your kitty's diet, so trying a different diet, particularly a diet low in carbohydrates and high in protein might help. I'm thinking that because she doesn't cover her stool it could be an indication that she has some sort of colonic problem. Please take her to your veterinarian for an examination.

I have a 6mos.old siamese male.He has a habit of watching and sometimes gets in while i`m cleaning. He acts like he`s making sure the job is done right.

I saw on a TV show that when domestic cats don't cover their "presents", they are displaying dominant behavior to other cats or if they think their 2 legged person is a cat--to them. What do y'all think?

My guy TRIES to cover (he's a one-eye'd Himmy) for quite awhile, but more often than not, does not cover, and it's steeeeeeeeeeenkeeeeeeeeeee! (But I've already had a more recent fecal exam on him, he's been expressed, (helped with smell, was a little blocked there) - he does NOT scoot and he really does try so hard to cover it. Pee-pee as well, by a couple of my cats.

This wasn't the norm before my Himmy came back home (went back to his owners after I adopted him - they used him as a breed cat, didn't like that much, but he was neutered, but they admitted to "accidentally" letting him out 2 times since I gave him back - last time was in torrential rains - was out for 3 days. Taken to a no-kill shelter (I'm a member of) and they called me 'cause his microchip still had my info. on it.

He's home! Just wish he'd cover; I think he's setting a poor example for the others.
