Now the only way I could get her out from under there, was by moving my bed a few times. Then she'd reluctantly and fearfully dash into the room she was confined to. Then Cole got his turn to explore the other rooms.

Before, when it was Skitzy's turn to be out, she'd run around the back of the living room couch, or plop down in my lap to help me with my latest knitting project. Now the only place she seemed to want to be, was under my bed.

"That hour you spent cuddling me when we watched Ice Skating together was really nice" Skitzy continued, "but most of the time I hardly get five minutes of you petting me or paying attention to me. Sometimes I think you forget that I'm even around. You've become so computer addicted, that the only time I get let out now, is when you're getting ready to go to sleep. Do you call that quality cat/human time?" Skitzy asked me in disgust.

"I used to be able to type on the keys of the computer, or block your view of the computer screen, or curl up for a nap in your lap, while you typed." Skitzy reminisced. "Now I never get to go in that room anymore, since Cole's been here!"

I felt a rip to my heart. I thought of changing things around, but when Cole was first confined to a different room, he tore up the carpeting trying to get out. Granted the carpeting was old, and needs to be replaced anyway, but I didn't expect Cole would so actively assist with that job. Or I could move the computer to the other room, to have more quality time with Skitzy, but that would be a big undertaking on my part.

"Oh you're such a little baby, Skitzy." Cole piped in with a smug look on his face. "Why don't you just face facts? Our human person, just happens to like me better than she likes you!"

"That's not true!" I protested. How did I become the human enemy in all of this? "I love you both and care about the welfare of both of you." The nerve of Cole, coming out with those upsetting remarks to Skitzy and to me! Cole can be a bratty cat at times and this was one of them.

"Well you hurt me the last time you attacked me!" Skitzy said plaintively.

"It's not my fault that you must have flunked out of your cat courses in how to defend yourself! I'm just doing what comes naturally to me. Which is go after anything that moves. You move Skitzy, I'll go after you. It's as simple as that!"

"What do you expect me to do? Stand still, like I'm some sort of cat statue or something?"

"Cole" I intervened. "You're a lot bigger than Skitzy is!

HUMAN STORIES: A TALE (OR IS THAT TAIL?) OF LIFE EVENTS FROM THE CATS PERSPECTIVES.

"One thing I've learned, and I've lived here some time, is that my human person, isn't very reliable. She doesn't even get it, that I'm much smarter then she is!" pouted Skitzy, my smaller female tortoiseshell cat.

The human counterpart of this two cat household, that being me, inquired about Skitzy's current mood. "Skitzy, You don't seem to be as happy as you once were? You don't seem to be your sweet little loving self. What's going on with you?" I asked her, hoping I could get to the cause of this change in her personality.

"You're the one you brought in that big black bully brute of a Cat named Cole! Though you talked to me about it before you brought him here, I've suffered greatly since he's lived here. I think you love him more than you love me!"

"Oh Skitzy! How can you say that? I brought Cole in because I thought you needed cat company after Misty died. I had hoped Cole would be a good cat companion and a playmate for you."

"Well you thought wrong didn't you?" Skitzy got that haughty and hurt look on her face. "You've seen the way he goes after me? The minute I move, that big brute, Cole is all over me, like peanut butter sticks to jelly. How can you ignore the keening noises I've made when he aggressively goes after me?"

"Skitzy I haven't been ignoring you. Those noises are very distressing to me. That's why I started my Cat separation system, and my cat rotation system." One cat gets confined to a bedroom, while the other cat freely gets to roam the rest of the place. Then it rotates and they change places. The Cat that was previously out, gets confined to a different room, and the one who was previously confined gets the run of the rest of the place. It would be so much simpler if I could have built a cat revolving door. "I've done that to protect you from Cole's aggressiveness. My cat rotation system, was to make it fair to both of you!" I pleaded with Skitzy.

"You call this set up fair?" Skitzy asked in protest. "I get confined much more then Cole does. I used to volunteer to go into the room I get confined in, or didn't you ever notice? But why should I go in there voluntarily now, after his last vicious attack on me?"

Everything she said was true. After the last time I tried to reintroduce them to each other, Skitzy got the worst of it from Cole. She became traumatized and wouldn't come out from under my bed. Even opening a can of wet cat food, did nothing to entice her out as it had in the past. (coninuted tomorrow)

Lilybug continued.......

That evening, as we were getting the cats' dinner ready, we went to check on her under the bed but - no Lily! We looked everywhere but no luck. She had hidden herself too well for us to find. We continued getting dinner ready, fed the rest of the cats, and just hoped Lily would come out on her own.

Later, as we were cleaning up after dinner, we walked into the kitchen, and there was Lily, calmly eating her dinner! She stopped eating and stared at us, ready to run if we came near her. Deciding it was better to err on the side of caution rather than show her how happy we were she was out and eating, we ignored Lily and went about our business. Lily continued to eat but kept a watchful eye on us.

After a few days of treatment, Lily was remarkable better. Her rash was clearing up, she didn't fuss at her ear much, and was even coming to us for snuggles and pets again. We were so relieved there are no words to describe it!

After this experience, we have decided that, should Lily need to go to the vet again, we will start with the St. John's Wort right away, preferably before we put her in the car. And, if it is nothing life threatening, we will start with herbal remedies first! We never, ever want our Lily to experience such stress and anxiety again!

There are no holistic vets in our area but we have been fortunate to find one that has been willing to consult with us over the phone and by email. She recommended a book called "The Veterinarians Guide to Natural Remedies for Cats" (which you can purchase on Amazon. com) and we have all read it cover to cover and find it to be an excellent resource.

The liquid St. John's Wort can be purchased at most health food stores. Neem Plus can be purchased from Ayush Herbs and the Phytogel from Tomer Labs. We have not been able to find the Neem Plus or the Phytogel anywhere else. In fact, when we inquired about them at several health food/natural remedy shops, they had no idea what we were talking about so if you want to get them for your cats, we recommend simply ordering them over the internet.

If you are a believer in holistic remedies for your cats, we highly recommend getting the book or, even better, finding a holistic vet near you. We firmly believe that, because she is so sensitive, modern medicine almost killed our beautiful Lilybug. But because we were open to alternative methods of treatment, herbal medicine brought our baby back to us. She is as happy and healthy as she ever was and back to enjoying her snuggle and pet lap time on a daily basis! The End.

Hi Terri!
I haven't been on much lately, but I just want to update you on Marlin and I.

First off, we both just turned eight years old on Monday. Thank you for all the bday wishes! We got lots of food, treats, a catnip carrot, and Marlin got a new collar and cat grass.

Secondly, my seizure situation has been good. After having seizures on two pills, the vet increased it to three a day, and since I've been taking that, I haven't had any problems. However, the vet thinks that I am beginning to develop a little bit of arthritis (I'm having trouble jumping onto the bed and I stumble a little on the stairs) and may need to take medication for that in the future.

Marlin has had a cyst-type lump on his shoulder for the past couple months. At our annual check-up today, the vet decided it should be removed. She doesn't know if it's dangerous yet, but she did remove it and sent it off to be biopsied at a lab. Marlin now has 18 stitches (it looks like she did a thorough job with the surgery) and is at home doing fine. We're hoping the results come back good, but even if they don't, she was taking the whole lump out so it won't have time to spread if it is bad. He will be going to get the stitches removed in 7-10 days, but for now, he has to have Yuck gel around his incision to keep him from biting at it.

Last of all, two new additions have been added to the family. They are goldfish named Harold and Sheela. Harold unfortunately died after less than a month, but Sheela is still alive. Marlin and I don't bother with her much, though. There was only one time that I decided to go look at her while she was in an alternate bowl during a tank cleaning, but my human stopped me before I could get a fish dinner.

Lily usually loves baby food and it's the perfect way to give any type of medicine to a cat and avoid the stress of forcing a pill or liquid down their throats. Because of Lily's sensitivities, we decided upon St. John's Wort to calm her. St. John's Wort is an herb used to treat depression in people. It has been shown to calm anxiety in highly stressed cats very quickly, often within a day or 2, with no side-effects. For Lily, it seemed the ideal choice.

We got some St. John's Wort in the liquid form to make it easier to measure out the proper dosage, mixed it in a tablespoon of chicken baby food, spooned it into the lid of the baby food jar (fearing that a normal size dish would scare her more). Then, using a stick, we pushed it as close to her as we could, backed away slowly, left the room completely, and prayed Lily would eat it.
A couple of hours later we checked on her and were elated - she had eaten the baby food! That evening, we repeated the process with dose number 2. The next morning, while giving her dose number 3, Lily meowed more normally and appeared visibly calmer. Later that day she came out from under the bed, used the litter box and ate some actual food! We were alive with hope!

The following day, it was time to start treating her injury and infections. We added some Neem Plus to the baby food/St. John's Wort mixture. Neem Plus is an Ayurvedic herbal combination that features Neem which is an Indian herb that has antifungal, antiviral, and antibiotic properties. Neem has long been used to treat a variety of skin conditions. Neem Plus is available in a liquid form specifically for use in pets and is completely safe for cats.

The final step was to apply Phytogel to her rash and ear injury. Phytogel is a combination herbal gel that also contains Neem as well as Cedarwood oil. When applied topically, it has superior disinfecting and soothing action and reduces itching and irritation as well as any cortisone cream. Phytogel is formulated especially for pets, is safe for cats, and because of the icky taste, the cat doesn't lick it off
We had to restrain Lily to apply the Phytogel and the second we finished and let her go, she shot from the room like a bullet and hid again! We weren't too worried because running and hiding after any type of treatment is normal behavior for many cats but especially for Lily! Still, we kept an eye on her, talked reassuringly to her, and hoped she would forgive us enough to come out for dinner.

That evening, as we were getting the cats' dinner ready, we went to check on her under the bed but - no Lily! We looked everywhere but no luck. She had hidden herself too well for us to find. We continued getting dinner ready, fed the rest of the cats, and just hoped Lily would come out on her own.

Dollys Daily Delivery - Day 13 & Vote
Lilybug continued)
Lily is a very sensitive cat when it comes to modern medicine. We no longer vaccinate her as the vaccines make her very sick and she is unable to tolerate them. We are quite lucky however, because she has never been sick - until recently. We watched our beautiful, sweet, affectionate "Bug" turn into a cowering, fearful, sickly cat almost overnight!

It all started one day when we noticed she was bleeding slightly from her ear flap. We figured she had been scratched by one of the other cats. We cleaned the ear, applied a bit of antibiotic ointment and called it good.

Over the next couple of days, we noted that her ear kept bleeding off and on and she kept scratching at it. We assumed that she had another injury deeper inside the ear. The whole ear was turning red and it had some drainage crusted in it. We knew the wound was becoming infected. It was time for a trip to the vet.

The trip to the vet was uneventful and we found out she did indeed have a wound deep inside the ear that needed treatment. She was sedated, the ear wound irrigated and cleaned, antibiotics flushed through the ear, and after she woke up, we brought her back home.

She didn't eat dinner that night but we didn't worry about it too much. After all, she'd had a stressful day! We figured she just needed some time to rest and recover and that by morning, she would be her old self again. Boy! Were we wrong!

The next morning, she was in the kitchen with us but still didn't eat breakfast. The vet had given us antibiotic drops for her ear so we instilled the first drop. Lily shot out of the room and hid under the bed for the rest of the day. She was so far back, we couldn't reach her. She never came out to eat or use the litter box. Now, we started to worry!

For 2 days, Lily hid under the bed and wouldn't come out for anything. Using a flashlight, we could see her ear had been draining and was crusted up with dried blood and drainage. What was worse, she had developed a red,crusty rash around her chin and along her jaw, her coat was dull and listless, she cried plaintively whenever we looked at her, and she had a pained and frightened look on her face all the time. Our poor Lily was in trouble!

We knew we had to act! Lily's life was in danger! If the stress didn't get her, infection and shock surely would! But, what to do? Dragging her out from under the bed and forcing her back to the vet was out of the question. The stress of that would be too much. Yet, she had to get treatment. After much discussion and a few phone calls, we decided upon a course of action.

First priority was to de-stress her. Her exceedingly high level of anxiety would interfere with any sort of treatment but yanking her from under the bed would only increase that anxiety. We had to get some anti-anxiety medicine in her to start the calming process so, even though she wasn't eating, we decided to try to give her some baby food anyway. (Continued tomorrow).

Dollys Daily Delivery - Day 12 & Vote
The story of how Lily, or Lilybug as we fondly call her, came to be with us is nothing special but the story of how her life was saved using herbal remedies is!

Little "Bug" was adopted from a local shelter when she was just 6 or 7 weeks old. She looked at us from behind the shelter cage bars and it was love at first sight. A Maine Coon mix, our pretty baby is a very sweet and loving girl. She sports a beautiful, red tabby coat complete with the bottle brush tail and long belly hair of the Maine Coon breed. An average size cat, she is smaller than a true Maine Coon, and has never set even on paw in the snow.

She has a very expressive face with large, piercing yellow eyes. When she stares at you, you can practically feel it! Graceful like a ballet dancer, she can jump from the floor on to the top of a table covered with stuff without disrupting a thing.

Lily is a lap cat. She loves to snuggle on a lap with her face buried under our arm or in a shirt sleeve. She purrs the entire time she is being petted and if the petting stops, she stops purring, pull her head out and looks at you with her piercing eyes as if to say "I didn't say you could stop!" When the petting resumes, the purring resumes and she buries her head back in the snuggle position. Needless to say, she gets lots of attention.

We have long been believers in the benefits of herbal remedies, especially when it comes to our cats. Studies have shown that cats respond very well to herbal remedies. Our own experience bears this out. We use all natural essences like Bach Flower Essences and Spirit Essences to help our cats heal, adjust to changes, cope with grief and trauma, and to just deal with each other when life gets too much! But, if one of our babies requires medical attention, we are the first ones at the vet! For emotional stress and chronic problems, we find that herbal remedies tend to work the best and without the harmful side effects of modern medications.
A prime example of the positive benefits of herbal therapies recently occurred after a very minor injury and the events that followed, could have easily cost our baby her life.

Dollys Daily Delivery - Day 11
Murry continued

Soon, he started vaccines. Our vet was truly amazed at how healthy he was. We had named him Murry because it seemed to suit him and he seemed to like it. It didn't take long for him to respond to us calling him by name. But we still often refer to him as 'Baby Boy'.

Murry is now a little over 2 years old and continues to make us laugh at his antics. He loves chasing paper balls and mylar crinkle balls which, when he is done, always seem to end up in the water bowl!

He is very laid back and sweet tempered. He loves to snuggle and give us head bunts. When we pick him up, he just melts. It's like holding a bowl of jello!

His favorite place to sleep during the day is in the greenhouse window in the kitchen. (No plants there anymore - now it is strictly a cat sleeping area!) At night, he likes to sleep on our bed, head on the pillow and face buried in someone's neck. He used to like to sleep actually on someone's neck but he quickly grew too big and heavy for that!

Nothing ever seems to upset him. He is very friendly and playful with all of the other cats. He never hisses or acts aggressive in any way with cats or people. He is also very quiet. For the entire first year of his life, he never meowed. We suspected at first that there may have been some damage caused by his near drowning. Then, one day on the way to vet for his annual check-up, he started crying - very loudly! - and cried all the way to the vet! His voice is in excellent shape!

Murry is always the first to befriend any new arrivals and especially enjoys grooming the other cats. We often find him out in the Kitty Yard showing the young kittens how to catch bugs. He always comes to greet us when we return from running errands and when we say 'Hi Mr. Murry' he gets this cute, goofy look on his face and vibrates all over. He is just adorable and we all feel a special affection for him.

We are heartbroken over the needless deaths of Murry's siblings. At the same time, we are elated that little Murry survived and is in perfect health despite the odds against him. He is so sweet, even tempered and loving, you would never know that his life had such a harrowing beginning.

Everyday, when he comes to us for a snuggle, Murry reminds us just how important every little life really is!

Thank you for pouncing by yesterday to help me celebrate my 10th birthday Terri & TISK team! It was great having you at my pawty & I appreciate the thoughtful gifts, goodies & especially the love filled hugs you brought along with your warm furry bodies. I hope my younger sisters didn't bug you too much but they were very excited to see so many kitties coming in the house. In fact, Fluffernut is still being energetically wacky this morning but Trixie is napping from playing so hard. Patches is cleaning up the confetti, shredded balloons & wrapping paper but I'm watching & letting her know if I see any she misses...MOL!

Thank you again for coming by to share my special day with me dear furiends! Pawed you a mice cream cake filled vote & giving you my biggest paw hugs for making me feel like Super Cat the entire day!

Wow, I want to say Thank You for coming over on Monday, June 10th to my 4th year Adoptiversary Pawty to help me Celebrate! Also, thank you for bringing all the goodies, treats, toys, balloons piñatas and flowers, but most important of all is having your furrriendships!

Can you believe it? I’ve been here for four years now! Mom sure can’t! If you remember my story, mom had thought I was a little boy when she furrrst seen me and called me “Little Man”! MOL! Boy, did I change her mind when she seen I had a baby with me a few months later! MOL! That’s when she had to think of a mew name for me! I became an inside kitty on June 2, 2011 so I could be close to my fur daughter, Sylvr Tuff 160205 after she was hit in the street on May 1, 2011! Mom says we’ve both come a long ways since becoming inside girls. Mom’s so proud of us both!

Mom came in our room Monday morning saying “Happy Adoptiversary” to me and gave me hugs and kisses. A little later, mom came back and this time she gave me 4 Temptations treats (for hairballs) and Sylvr only got 2 treats! We never had those ones before and they were quite yummy! Then last night, we still got our regular 4 Friskies treats! What a life!

And still, for the next several months we may not be on too often as mom and dad will be xtra busy. We will try to get on when we can!

Dollys Daily Delivery - Day 10
If you miss any of my blogs you can go to one of my profile pages below named "Dollys Catpaign Blogs".

Every 2 hours during the night, we gave the babies warm formula. We held them and tried to comfort them. During the wee hours of the night, the little girl kitten died. We were heartbroken and feared for the life of the little boy.

Early the next morning, our other cats were up and waiting for their breakfast. To our surprise, the little baby boy was up and moving around in the box we were using as a bed. He seemed quite alert and curious. We brought him with us to the food prep area while we prepared breakfast for our other cats.

As we prepared the baby food-lysine mixture for Buddy, we held up a spoonful of the baby food for the little guy to inspect. To our amazement, he started licking it!

We immediately fixed a dish of the baby food, baby rice cereal and kitten formula for him and he ate it right up! We all began cheering! Despite the odds against him, it seemed as though this tiny baby would survive after all! Only time would tell if he had suffered any permanent damage but we didn't care. No matter what, this little guy would always have a home with us. We decided to call him Murry.

Over the next week, Murry thrived. He became fast friends with "BUDDY" , another kitten we had rescued who was a few weeks older. They began sleeping and playing together and soon were sharing meals together.

We fed Murry the baby food, rice cereal, formula mixture several times a day for several days then started mixing in some raw meat homemade cat Food (minus the chunks and psyllium). He loved it and continued to have a terrific appetite!

Within a couple of weeks, our little baby boy had explored every nook and cranny of the house and was following the 'big cats' around watching everything they did. He was fearless and got himself into quite a few scrapes. He fell off furniture, miscalculated jumps, ran into walls, rolled down the stairs and even fell in the toilet once! Miraculously, he survived every mishap unscathed!

Dollys Daily Delivery - Day 7
Suddenly, the noise stopped. She heard the lady's voice. She began calling out. Between this scary, hot, dark place and the lady, the lady was much preferred. But even though she was calling, and she could hear the lady, the lady wasn't getting her out.

She was hot, so very hot. And she was getting tired, soooo tired. She felt like she had been in this horrible little hole for hours. She was still so very,very scared but she didn't even have the energy to cry anymore.

She could hear the sounds of far away voices and scratching. She didn't know what the sounds met but she hoped it was someone coming to rescue her. She was too weak to move anymore. It was so hot, she could barely breathe. Finally, with her last ounce of energy, she cried one more time...then she went to sleep..

She felt something gripping her. Though she was really scared, she was too weak to struggle, cry out, or even open her eyes. She was so hot, so exhausted, so scared, but she just couldn't move. She felt herself falling back into sleep, unaware of what was happening.

She felt cooler. It wasn't so hot and the air was cool and easy to breathe. She felt something cool touch her lips every so often. She realized she was laying on something soft and cool. She felt safe. And she slept.

As she began to awaken, she gradually became aware that she was in some kind of box. But it was airy and cool, and she could see an opening big enough for her to easily escape from. But she didn't run. She didn't want to escape. It was cool and soft in here. She felt safe.

She could hear voices and knew people were close by but she didn't feel scared. She opened her eyes and looked around. Right in front of her was a little dish. She could reach it without moving. She took a tentative sniff...water! Cool, fresh water. She took a couple of licks. It tasted good. But she still felt so tired, so she went back to sleep.

When she awoke again, she felt much better. She decided to try to move. Tentatively, she stood and took a few wobbly steps. She still felt weak but at least she could walk. And she didn't feel hot anymore.

As she walked out of her 'safe zone', she felt carpet under her feet and realized she was in a house. But not her house. It smelled different. But it seemed OK so she decided to explore.

The first thing she found was a dish full of food. And it was tasty! After she had her fill, she continued looking around and found a fresh, clean litter box. Handy as she had just realized she needed to go.

Oh, I'm so glad your eye is so much better! I know it's a pain having to be captured and medicated every day by your Mama, but as my Mom always tries to tell me, "It's for your own good," as if I, a Diva cat, would understand that. I, too, have to stay on meds the rest of my life. I put up a big fight and some of the liquid med goes on the counter when I throw my head around, but Mom does her best to get a dose down me. How are you? I am good. I had to stay in the house all day today til mom came home. Her friend came and got her at 1:00pm and they went downtown to get them Baseball tix. There were lots of people there buying tickets for the game tonight.

Mom said she had fun downtown, she likes it down there by the water, and said it is very peaceful to sit and relax. They had lunch at a place called Potbelly's.

Mom kept her promise and when she got home she opened the back door and let us out. It was 70* today with a light breeze and lots of sunny skies. A nice Spring day.

Looking good for tomorrow, too. Mom just wishes it would get warmer again. She prefers the mid 70's to 80's.

Thank you for coming to remember me on my crossing day. I’m probably one of the “older” Angels on CC, but I was a very special friend to my Mom during her younger years and I was with her through many, many milestones: most of elementary school, all of Jr. High, High School graduation and then moving out on her own, getting married, and having the first Big Sis and Big Bro. I was even very patient the time that Big Sis, only two years old, tried to spoon feed me pickle juice while Mom was busy with newborn Big Bro! I didn’t hurt her, I just growled gently and kept my mouth shut till Mom heard and rescued me! When Mom made a lot of the mistakes with me that she learned from in order to become a better cat Mom down the road, I was forgiving and was always there for her with a purr and a nuzzle. YEP I certainly AM ready for Round #3! Mom is so bummed as there is no hockey tonight! She follows the Blackhawks besides the Bruins and was holding her breath last night! What a clawbiter! She was listening to the Chicago radio station today in the car and they were talking about how the fans were standing and yelling so loud.

Those Thunderclan are going to be TOUGH no doubt about that but I will have lots of fun trying to beat them! I plan to be there Sunday, hope dad doesn't make plans for mom.

Thanks so much for visiting me and sending my mom healing hugs. I went to the post office yesterday and bought a big role of bubble wrap and put it around her so she won't get hurt again. When she started to turn purple, I grabbed the knife and made an opening for her mouth and nose, so she could breathe. Whew. tee hee.

We had a miserable rainy day here today, rained all day, then thundered, but no lightening, and we came in and watched the rain fall, then we went on the back porch, then back in...we were driving mom batty.

Mom had company today. One of her former co-workers came to visit her for about an hour, mom was happy for company as she usually doesn't get any.

Then mom spent 4 hours putting a new chest of drawers together for her bedroom. The old one was destroyed and falling apart. Mom got a new white headboard and so she painted her dresser and nightstand and vanity all white, but ordered a new chest cause like I said hers was totalled...MOL!!!

They sure don't make things like they used to, all moms old bedroom furniture was solid wood, but now most stuff is made from compressed wood, like sawdust all compacted together, that's why mom decided to keep her old stuff and just paint it white.

Well, I sure hope you have a pawsome evening.

What’s purring with you? Today was Frontline Day at our house. That stuff leaves my pretty back all nasty and smelly. Really, I don't mind it too much except when Mommy is putting it on my little back, I "blinky blinky" my eyes. Afterwards, I just go about my normal business (sleeping & eating).

Four Famous Cats of War– (petmed.com)

Cats are often overlooked in the history of military animals, and for the most part, all of our famous wartime cats became so during the 1st & 2nd World Wars, when cats were still very much a part of the naval service - both here in the States & abroad. These were the days when it was essential to have a good ratter/mouser on board to protect the food stores. Like their human counterparts, some cats performed above & beyond their daily service. In other cases, the cats were not official members of the service, but they showed courage under fire, or assisted in the survival of troops on the ground. Here are four cats that stand out for their exceptional wartime actions.

#4 Crimean Tom
Crimean Tom was an accidental hero. In 1854, when British & French troops occupied the Russian port town of Sevastopol, Tom led the famished troops to caches of food beneath the rubble, which had been hidden all along the waterfront by the Russian defenders. Though not an official military cat, Tom was adopted as a mascot by the grateful soldiers & was taken along to England when the troops were called back.

#3 Tiddles
Tiddles, a born & raised ship cat, served with the HMS Victorious Royal Navy aircraft carrier in the early 1940s as the official Captain’s Cat. It can be assumed that he performed his duties ably, since he traveled over 30,000 miles during his naval service. He may also be one of the reasons for why the black cat is considered lucky in Great Britain.

#2 Able Seacat Simon
Able Seacat Simon (his official title), of the Royal Navy’s HMS Amethyst, began his career in 1948 as the Amethyst’s formal ratter. Simon performed his duties so well that he was twice awarded in 1949. The first after a particularly grueling incident with Chinese forces, Simon was awarded an Amethyst campaign ribbon for his valiant service. The next was the Dickin Medal for animal gallantry. Simon is the only cat to have received the Dickin Medal, and when he died, he was buried with full naval honors.

#1 Pfc. Hammer
Even today, a good mouser is still cherished. Pfc. Hammer proved his mettle when he decided to move in with the troops of a U.S. Army unit in Iraq in 2004, killing & chasing away mice that would have devoured or contaminated the soldiers' food stores. The men were so grateful for Hammer’s hard work & affection toward them that they made him an honorary member of their unit, and applied for & received help from Alley Cat Allies & Military Mascots to bring Hammer home to America after their deployment. He now lives in Colorado with his old comrade, Staff Sgt. Rick Bousfield.

wow we had some more nasty storms at home last night and it got one of our outlets that has a breaker and all the outlets on one side of the kitchen dont work and momma had to pull the fridge out and run a heavy drop cord to it.

momma also said she saw on the news this morning that a lady in oklahoma foune her two precious kitties after searching the debris for hours. one has a broken leg and the other is just fine. sure did put a big smile on momma's face
momma ordered and inspiron 15.6" with touch screen from dell. sure hope she likes it and it gets here soon so we can get to our hockey games again before playoffs are over.

Another scorcher today..we hit the mid 80's again. It was 90* yesterday and this is only May, can't imagine what July will be like.

They keep calling for rain, but it never comes, so mom keeps waterin' the flowers outside. We do not like the hose, so we come upstiars when she does that, she doesn't get us wet, but we are afraid the water will get us anyway.

Mom is all done painting her dresser and vanity in her room. She ordered a new white chest of drawers yesterday. Mom ordered a new headboard last month and it is white, so instead of replacing all the furniture in her bedroom, she painted it all white, but the chest of drawers is so damaged and the drawers are falling apart, so she ordered a new one.

Thanks also for my COTD win and my birthday wishes and gifts. I know this is late, but with 6 kitties, mom is usually behind with our blogs. I was pleasantly purr-prised by my COTD win, I was not expecting that at all. Thank you!!!

We celebrated with Minnie Mouse cuppycakes (Mommy’s furiend who owns www.rosebakes.com made them for us). MerryBelle got a mew stainless steel Drinkwell Zen water fountain and Sissy got a red Petzip Luxury Stroller/carrier/car seat all in one. We also got a pink wand toy with a blinky ball on the end of it. You can see pics on the bottom of our pages. Of course, Casper Todd has already drooled & slobbered on our mew wand toy.

Thanks again for sharing our special days with us. Proverbs 27:9 says “A sweet friendship refreshes the soul.” So true!

Cats are blessed with a keen sense of smell. So while humans can smell broiled lobster, a cat can smell something like “broiled Maine lobster shipped in brine.” Despite their incredible sensitivity to smell, cats aren’t too concerned about taste. Of all their senses, taste is probably the least important to cats. Humans seek culinary perfection, but cats are mainly interested in whether the stuff they’re about to eat is nutritious or dangerous.

Cats tend to be more picky than dogs. One reason for this is that they’re carnivores, and spoiled meat is best left behind for scavengers. Another reason is that they’re, well, cats, and cats are generally more particular about life than dogs. Because they care more about what they put into their mouths, it’s tougher to slip them day-old food or extras like medicine.

Cats do seem to have one blind spot when it comes to taste: They have a very limited ability to identify sweets. While most animals prefer food with sucrose in it, cats don’t seem to notice it. In fact, researchers found that cats could not tell the difference between sugar water and plain water, even when the sugar level was so high that it was potentially dangerous.

Although flavor isn’t the most important thing to cats, food certainly is. It gives them a sense of comfort and well-being even as it satisfies their appetites. And it can be a powerful tool for communication as well. If you give a pet food he really likes, you’ll get his attention in a hurry.

Cats are creatures of habit, which means they’re most comfortable when they’re in familiar surroundings, with familiar people and familiar tastes. Just because people want to try different foods all the time doesn’t mean cats do too.

It’s fine to change foods periodically. Cats may get bored with the same food after a few months and will crave a new flavor. Let them have it. But make the change slowly by mixing some of the new food in with the old food for a few days. This will prevent diarrhea or other digestive problems that may occur when pets suddenly start eating something new.

THE ABILITY TO TASTE: The reason dogs and cats snack out of the trash can with the same gusto that they have for cleaning out their food bowls is that the food we throw out often has appealing flavor & aromas. There’s a significant difference in the number of tastebuds between pets & people. Here’s the comparison:

♥ When we were just tiny kittens, running wild & free under our fur mama Baby’s 13286 care when PRINCESS found a way to our neighbors’ yard [mid July 2003] who has a Yellow Lab. That Lab was let out in their back yard and he seen PRINCESS. Mom & dad heard the little screams of pain & came running out in the back yard. The neighbor got a hold of their dog and dad went over the fence to get PRINCESS, but it was too late for her as dad handed her to mom. Mom was in such tears. PRINCESS was only 10 weeks young when she was killed. To this day, that dog is still next door to us so mom always worries us outside kitties.

Hello Terri
Thank you for your kind words, prayers & sweet thoughts. Like many of you, Mommy knows all too well about kidney disease. Her Dot passed away at the age of 17 from kidney disease & hyperthyroidism in October 2000. Mommy had hoped it would be a very long time before she was faced with this awful disease again. She will do her very best to give me the greatest care possible & lots of TLC.

I am eating the k/d canned and dry foods pretty well so far. Mommy says it is extremely difficult having one baby on a special diet. But we are doing our best with this situation & taking it one day at a time.

Thanks again for your prayers & concern. We really do appreciate it. Job 12:10 says “In God’s hands is the life of every creature.” We believe this to be true.

Keeping you in our prayers for your eyes to heal purrfectly.

Hello Terri
How was your eye doctor visit? Yesterday I visited Dr. William for my annual checkup, blood work (CBC, 6-panel, T3 & T4), shots and 3-month Schirmer eye test. First the good news – my eyes are doing well.

Mommy’s intuition told her something was going on with me, so now the not-so-good mews. I am in the very early stages of kidney disease:
My BUN level = 38 (normal is 16-36)
My Creatinine = 2.6 (normal is .8-2.4)

Dr. William says we caught this early. For now, we are going to treat it by changing my diet to Prescription Diet k/d. So far, I am eating both the k/d canned and the k/d dry food. We will recheck my levels in 3 months.

I also have a UTI, so I am taking Clavamox, the wonder drug. My thyroid level (T4) is in the “grey area” so Dr. William sent some of my blood to Texas A&M so they can run a test called T4 by Equilibrium Dialysis. We should receive those results next week.

As you can imagine, Mommy is very upset, stressed, & worried about me. Please keep us in your prayers.
