Hi B.B. King and family, How are you today? I am catpaigning for ACOTD and wanted to take this opportunity to raise awareness of FIV. I have just recently crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge in June of this year due to complications from FIV. I was FIV positive, but was able to live for 6 years with few problems. What happens with FIV is that it breaks down the immune system and the body cannot fight off bacteria that a normal body would wipe out easily. FIV stands for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus and is similar in some ways to HIV, but in others, is very different. Humans cannot get FIV, it is only spread to other cats. FIV is spread through bite wounds from an infected cat, however a pregnant FIV cat can spread it to the kittens in the womb. There is no cure for FIV. A cat that is FIV positive may not show any symptoms for a number of years. When symptoms do show up, they can include weight loss, gingivitis, stomatitis (mouth sores), digestive trouble, kidney trouble and other signs throughout the body. There is a vaccine available, however it does not cover all strains of FIV and cats that have been vaccinated will show a false positive, meaning the test will indicate it has FIV even though it doesn’t. Cats kept indoors are much less likely to be infected with FIV. Cats should be neutered, unneutered male cats are more aggressive, they get in more fights and are at a much higher risk of getting FIV. FIV-infected cats should be kept indoors, they should be fed a balanced diet, should not eat raw foods such as meat and eggs and should visit their vet for wellness checks. We got most of this info from Cornell’s site on FIV and from Wikipedia and from information our vets gave us. I just wanted to try to keep kitties from getting FIV and to encourage people to give FIV kitties a chance. Mom took a lot of pictures of me because my time was limited. If you like, you can see my scrapbook at 14037. You all have a wonderful day. VOTE lily COTD!!! (^.^) now just sit around and relax today on TUE. June 1st and take a look around. Lily was born in an adoption center and was only to think she would spend the rest of her life there. luckily, after 10 long weeks of waiting she was picked up and was going to have a home. she would have an owner that loved her and a real life. who knew the adventures that would await her ahead. Lily was as exited as a cat that was around catnip for the first time. infact, she was around catnip for the 1st time! Lily was in heaven. look at the world from a happy cat's point of veiw. its awesome! Now Lily is a happy older kitty. she loves to play outside and climb in trees. the backyard is big so she can have a whole world to explore every day! the cat door invites her to go indoors and outdoors. she has a nice bed and a cat playhouse and food and a litterbox and so much more to herself! Well, almost. she shares it all with her twin brother, Ziggy. They are best friends and love to play together. Thank you for taking up part of you day on TUE. June 30 to read about Lily. She needs all the help she can get to acheive her dream, COTD. thank you your friend, LilyCome visit me, lily & Ziggy.
