How We Met
Tia had been living under our families deck for several months while we fed her then Timothy showed up. Tia and Timothy made friends, then they made friends with us and then we were able to get them in the house. The rest is history.

we were
hoping you'd make sports day here today, but knowing your mom's schedule you won't be able to do so, but we do love it when you have a chance 1-2 times a month dropping by to visit with us. humid, sticky and yucky is the word, al-though many have been waiting for this type of weather all year long with the cold and long winter we all had, right?
janet's got a 7:45 appt. dr's appt. for warts and sinus flu she's gotten now a week from tomorrow and knows it takes 6-8 weeks to fully clear her system so between 1,000mg of vitamin c and the otc things she's taking for that and allergies it's okay. 80s and boomers here today. sandy,ana,haley,angelsCome visit me, ana, haley, malachi is my boyfriend! whiskerscotm & sandy, angels, vote whiskers cotm!.

Top Reasons To Keep Cats Indoors – Part 1 (from cats.about.com)

Many cat lovers are now savvy that indoor cats are safer cats, while others still think that cats deserve freedom to run in the great outdoors. When humans domesticated cats, we took on the responsibility for their health & welfare. Part of that responsibility is to keep cats safe & in good health. For those holdouts for letting cats roam free, consider these top reasons to keep cats indoors.
• To Monitor Your Cat’s Urinary Tract/Bowel Health. With an outdoor cat, pet owners are unable to monitor painful attempts to urinate or poop. The first, a red flag warning for UTI or urinary tract blockage; the second, a red flag for constipation, bowel blockage or mega-colon.
• Indoor Cats Are Safe From Predators & Dog Packs. Outdoor cats are below predators in the food chain, & they are sitting ducks for owls, raptors, coyotes, & native big cats. Dogs running in packs will consider a cat fair game; even one large dog can easily overpower & kill a cat. Remember that some dogs are also bred to attack; they are not really to blame when their instinct takes over. Even with a full set of fangs & claws, the cat rarely has a chance when caught outside.
• Indoor Cats Don't Create Neighbor Problems. Even "well-bred" cats will venture into neighbors' yards when allowed to roam free. People who don't like cats will not tolerate cats using their gardens as litter boxes, & will sometimes resort to extreme measures to keep the cats out.
• Indoor Cats Rarely Get Abscesses From Fighting. Cats are very territorial & will defend their territory to the death, if challenged by another cat. At the very least, these territorial battles often result in abscessed wounds, which can be deadly if not treated in time. There's also the chance, of course, of cats contracting FIV from deep bite wounds.
• Indoor Cats Are Safe From Human Abuse. Freely-roaming cats are easy targets for gangs of youths with time on their hands, for cat-haters, who seek cats out for target practice, & for neighbors who would think nothing of killing a cat for trespassing on their property. Although animal protection laws are beefing up, prosecution will never bring a loved cat back to life.
• Indoor Cats Can Get Plenty of Exercise. Cats do get exercise, but they can get it safely with interactive toys, climbing towers, scratching posts, & other indoor toys; all much safer than running from dogs or fighting with other cats. Remember also that there are safe compromises for the outdoor experience.

good morning!
down into the lower 40s here this morning and janet's just back from walking pepper around the big block! usually she goes for a 3 miles one, but isn't feeling all that good due to a new strain of the sinus-allergy flu the doctors here are calling it as it's just made worse when allergies are added to the regular sinus flu. lots here are getting it and this is janet's first time getting sick this year as she's avoided it all season long and boom it hit her like a ton of bricks on wednesday around noontime. zaps her energy by noontime and she's ready for bed after that, but keeps going till early evening when she knocks off early between 8-8:30. was great hearing from you again and hoping we'll hear back soon. almost time to hang the first load of wash outside! sandy,ana,haley,angels

You are very welcome! It was my pleasure to drop those votes over at the contest page. I sent them in bulk because my secretary (Aunt Mary) is kind of forgetful sometimes (sorry Aunt M, but you are), and I wanted to make sure Kieara got all of her votes.
I LOVE to run up and down stairs and all around the house. Mom (Aunt Mary's sister) and Aunt M call it "Happy Hour". It happens every day at around 7:00 pm. Weird, I know.

happy mother's day!

A Word With Whiskers – May 10
Baby Socks – by Bonita Chambers

The gray tuxedo kitten decided he would live with us after his feral mother was hit by a car and died. His tiny feet looked like little white socks so we named him Baby Socks. We fed him and talked to him until he finally trusted us enough to pet him and pick him up. We took him to the vet for shots and neutering. Even still, he was not an inside cat. He wanted to patrol his own domain outside. However, when I would sit outside, he would jump into my lap, his white feet kneading my legs.
We were also owned by a 10 lb Yorkie named Sugar. Baby Socks got used to her using ‘his’ backyard. They formed a truce where she didn’t chase him and he didn’t hiss at her. Baby Socks grew to weigh 20 lbs., twice the size of the dog.
At the same time, Sugar grew older. By age 16, she had cataracts in both eyes. Due to age and numerous health problems, Sugar went blind. Despite her blindness she knew how to navigate the rooms in the house, and we left the furniture in place so she wouldn’t get confused or hurt.
We did worry about her going out in the yard. A slope ran down to a creek where snakes or raccoons could harm her. We took her on trips to the bathroom and made sure she was able to follow our voice back to the door.
Eventually Sugar lost her hearing. We had to watch her every move when she was outside and pick her up to bring her back inside.
It wasn’t long before we noticed Baby Socks was following Sugar whenever she was in the yard. If she got too close to the slope, he got in front of her and nudged her in the right direction, safely to the door. He became her self-appointed “seeing-eye cat”! Sugar died when she was 17. Baby Socks seemed to know she was gone, but he watched whenever we opened the back door, just in case.
He still patrols the yard. I tell him what a good cat he is and maybe we might get another dog someday. He doesn’t seem impressed. If that day comes, I’m sure Baby Socks will once more work out a truce, and a friendship, with whatever new canine enters his domain.

My sisters are going to take you up on the seats at the Derby, you would not believe what Evie is going out in public with on her head! Or maybe you would, you have sisters. I'm going with Dolly to make sure her pawrents get to their house in WA safely, humans can't do anything without our supervision, you know.
House-hunting, how exciting! Our humans haven't done that in, oh, about almost 30 years. One of these days they're going to have to downsize .. when the Big Bros both move out ... they're both older than the house. It may NEVER happen! (Mom says, oh yes it will!)
Anyway, it sounds like your Mom is really busy with all this stuff, so we understand if you can't visit very often. We're always here, and we enjoy seeing you whenever you can get on CC! Good to see you! That’s great that you have so many antiques, especially ones that were handed down in the family and have special meaning to your Mom. Those are the best kind. You’re right, though, a kitty has to be careful around them. No claw sharpening on the solid maple armoires, no way! Humans get kind of funny about things like that.
We’ve had a lot of rain this week, too. Even some mushy snow yesterday, but it didn’t stay. Today the sun is coming out and Evie and I might get our walk. Thanks for voting for Evie in the contest, by the way. Mom has fun playing with pictures for us, as you can probably tell.

looks as if

2/28/13 Final Official Blog of King Barney! +30
Wow! That does sound final! Tomorrow we sleep in--- wonder if the dogs will understand. Ginger woke mom before 4am today and had to go out. Zeus is trying to wake her up with purr therapy. This month has flown by, though there were days it didn't seems so. We have been kept busy with prayers and visits to sick kitties and families in our realm and with fun celebrations too!
Well, I have been been searching for an appropriate story for this morning and I keep coming back to mom's friend Anne, who isn't a rescued cat or dog, but probably one of our best friends. Mom says she learned most of what she knows from her, about our needs and behavior. Mom met Anne when she first joined the rescue. Anne was the oldest member, even back then, gruff to people, but one could not find a kinder or more caring person, when it came to rescuing cats and dogs. Anne was the real work horse of the group--- making sure everyone had food and supplies, bringing it to the colonies of feral kitties the rescue supported. Live-trapping cats, bringing them to vet appointments for healthcare and spay/neuter. Anne helped with transportation to adoptions and had a special Kennel license for her home. She fostered many special needs cats through the years, ones needing regular medications, having physical disabilities, or diseases such as feline leukemia, which other groups might euthanize.
When mom first met Anne, she didn't talk much, especially to new people. You had to prove that you were there for the long haul. Finally, when mom's car died, she needed a ride to the adoptions and Anne gave her that ride. Gradually they became closer and Anne began asking her for help with such things as kitten and cat trapping. She taught mom about caring for motherless kittens and understanding the needs of feral cats. One weekend Anne had a family event to go to and she asked mom to take care of a cat she was fostering and had a feeding tube. Mom doesn't even remember why it had a feeding tube, but she then realized that she had earned Anne's trust.
You may remember that we announced last weekend that Anne needed to go into a nursing home. Mom does hope to visit soon, as it is not far from our home. Anne surely needs your continued prayers. She was always a fiercely independent person and has not had an easy life. When she was young, she had an alcoholic husband and raised 5 children without much assistance from him. After she lived by herself and dedicated her life to the rescue. janet did that too in may of last year and wasn't picked as nobody else was too had 60 people jammed into a small room for 4 hours and then they let us all come home seeing the only case was settled out of court at the last minute. now she doesn't get picked again for another 5 years, al- though it's been known to happen. had 24" of snow 3 weeks back and then several other smaller storms all of which melted, but we did see 50 one day last week, although didn't feel like it with a big stiff northeasterly wind off of the gulf of maine and it's really cold this time of the year. more big rains after an inch of slushy snow yesterday and 40s this coming week, but unsettled through tuesday. sandy, ana, haley, angelsCome visit me, ana, haley, malachi is my boyfriend! whiskerscotm & sandy, angels, vote whiskers cotm!.

2/19/13 Happy Tuesday to You From King Barney!
The temp is +5, but a windchill of -14. The good mews is that its the warmest temp in our state. Can you believe that this month is more than halfway over! I do hope you have been enjoying it and your time with us at the castle. We have also been enjoying JosieMae's blogs and we remind all to vote for her page#193862 daily, so she can be Queen of March.
Well the bad mews is that mom is still looking for the camera charger, but the good is that we will have another pic to go with today's story when she finds it. I thought I would tell the story of her first visit to the Golden Valley Humane Society, Golden Valley, MN, not far from us. It was shortly after her grandmother had passed and during the time of Angels Pasha and Agatha. She was job hunting and found a notice of an opening in Humane Education for the Humane Society. Now, at that time she knew she didn't qualify for it, but she wanted the info.
It sure was an interesting trip too. They gave a tour of the facilities, including the adoption areas, which included dogs, cats and other critters. The cats were kept both in cages and had large free rooms, where they were given time out of the cages. Well, I'm sure many of your pawrents know the danger of visiting the cat area of the Humane Society and mom didn't get out free either. As she walked through a stripped orange paw came out of a cage she passed and grabbed her arm. Mom stopped and said hi, removing the claws from her clothing and giving the cat a pat. She turned to leave and again she felt a tap and the claws grabbed her firmly. Again, she stopped to pet the cat. His eye caught hers, as if to say "get me out!" Mom thought about it, but she had Pasha at home and knew she had been told he was not good with other cats. Anyway, she continued her tour, but had to pass this cat once more on the way out. She did not even have him in mind, when the same paw stopped her one last time. The eyes pleaded--- "Please lady, I need to get out of here--- lets blow this pop-stand!" This time she asked about him and his adoption fee. It was only $35.00, with a gift certificate for a low cost neuter. That day Grisha, which is what mom named him, escaped with mom to a new life! It wasn't the end of their adventures, because, although mom kept him in the guest room and had him neutered immediately, he did not get along with Pasha, who wanted to kill him--- no doubt about it.
As usual, we will have to turn this into a two-parter and finish on Thursday. This story has a wonderful ending, so stay tuned. Grisha was a really sweet cat, downright irresistible cat, and even though mom knew it wouldn't work to keep him with Pasha, he was never going back to the Humane Society.

found out from the insurance adjuster that she should get her car back within the next 21/2-3 weeks as things were estimated around 1,750 which means janet pays the first $500 like everybody in mass does to have their vehicles fixed. then paperwork coming from the office in albany, ny and that's gonna take almost a week to get here seeing it's gone super slow now, but once it does then janet has to fill out a few things and get them going at the garage where the work is being done. lost 13" of the 24" which fell on saturday and more going so it's a gonner bigtime between today and friday. sandy, ana, haley, angelsCome visit me, ana, haley, malachi is my boyfriend! whiskerscotm & sandy, angels, vote whiskers cotm!.

janet's out of
commission till sunday when she goes back to work seeing she either strained/pulled a ligament/muscle down around her lower left rib and isn't allowed to do more than stand, walk, sit or sleep. she isn't allowed to do her scheduled 3 shifts till sunday when she'll try again to see how it's doing. thus, if we get the big snowstorm which is now being called for friday into saturday, natty will be responsible for doing 2 driveways, shoveling as well as raking the roof as we're hoping it's a dry powdery snow so the snow blower will make quick work of it. sandy, ana, haley, angelsCome visit me, ana, haley, malachi is my boyfriend! whiskerscotm & sandy, angels, vote whiskers cotm!.

Barney here. The temperature here is +4, with the wind -20! Q.A.Sugar has contacted us and requests an early Coronation Ceremony. Details are being set-up as I speak and we hope to inform you before this goes out today. News flash! Q.A.Sugar just contacted us and says that 6pm her time would work. That would be 5pm EST/ 4pm C/ 2pm Pacific. The Ceremony will be rather brief on the CMR page #46883, but with a reception after. After 6:30pm Central time tonight, you may come to Pawty on my page #74382. Zeus has promised to work on the decorating and is asking all Orange cats to assist, probably with TPing the premises, not that we don't trust him. Hefty has already asked Ms Chyna Doll to be the royal chef, so you know the food will be topnotch! Its been a long, but inspiring Catpaign and we have all enjoyed it immensely! All of you have been so encouraging and giving kind praise about our rescue stories. Mom is feeling humbled with your comments, because she only does what is necessary and she knows how to do. We are all humbled by all your votes of confidence and I hope honor you as your King of February.
Not sure where we will go in the month ahead, but trust inspiration will find us. We have been informed that the royal blogging days are Tuesday and Thursday. We will surely visit this weekend on Caturday or Sunday to let you know how our move in to the Castle went and what events are planned for the week ahead. Other days we hope to do a lot of more purrsonal blogging and visiting all the kitties in our Kingdom. 1/14/13 A Monday Morning Wake Up! Barney waves!
Hi Timmy--- yes, its the North Shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota--- where mom hopes to someday move!
Actually we are the ones needing to wake up, judging from the votes already on Zeus and my, Barney's pages! It's only 5 degrees here, but since we are indoor cats, except when we manage to escape, we have to go by the dogs report and they came back with frost on their whiskers!
Well, you might guess that today we will be talking more about Zeus, since its his day to run for COTD. His basic story has been told before. He came from a kill shelter in another state and someone in our group, who keeps an eye on the net, saw him. a couple other cats and a dog. Our group was able to take Zeus, another cat and the dog. Mom took Zeus and what an adventure that has been! He was 8-9 months when he first came to us. His big boy surgery and shots were done before he came to our home. Mom worked on his socialization with us, both cats and dogs and her. He goes to adoption events at PetCo and PetSmart every other Saturday. The main question people ask now is why hasn't he been adopted--- mom's question too. It is also the question of new fosters when they join a group, how long does it take? Previously we talked about Penny, who was adopted within two weeks. Zeus is still with us after six months.
First of all, mom's group screens new homes very carefully. The cats and dogs are posted on Petfinder.com for our group and area. Zeus goes to adoptions every other week, twice a month. He does not show well, because he is very scared. He by now thinks he should stay with us. Mom loves him like crazy and he knows that. He hisses and spits at potential families, though mom did try Feliway last week and it seemed to help. She also got him a high-edged round bed, which he can hide in. Yes, we want very much to keep him, but our home is full and if we keep him, it means no more cats can come in until one of us crosses the Bridge. Not going to happen for a long time! We hope. Other than all his mischief, Zeus is a sweet cat and even demands his share of lap time. He still attacks mom's ankles and feet, but when she says ouch and enough and, if necessary, stops him with a hand on his scruff, he does stop. She then walks away and ignores him for awhile. Being ignored is not something Zeus enjoys!
So there you have it. We are not giving up on Zeus. He is welcome to stay and we love him dearly, but at this point he is still going to adoptions and we are still hoping for a purrfect forever home. Oh yes.....
The wonderful bowl games that my team SHOULD be in...but..*sigh*-they made the dreaded mistake of trading their own purrsonal property for a tattoo. Just glad we don't claim we root for Penn State! I can't wait..been too long of a wait in between to watch some college football truthfully.I mean...what other excuse can we use to eat and pawty and throw chicken wings at the TV :) And whats with everything happening in the pro's! Like a black cloud hanging over all of them.
I almost forgot about the end of the world. I KNEW there was a good reason I held off on buying Christmas gifts this year.
