How We Met

Mom saw Strudel at PetSmart and just loved her color at first sight. She was up for adoption from a local rescue group,and mom decided to add her to this crazy cat house. She now lives 'in harmony' with 15 other kitties. Some days are more harmonious than others. Strudel has a strong pursonality and doesn't always see 'eye to eye' with some of the other kitties here but mom makes it work.

TODAY'S CAT FACT
HOW CATS COMMUNICATE TO EACH OTHER

Cats communicate to each other by means of odor. Cats have scent glands that are on their forehead, around their mouth, and near the base of their tail. The cat will rub these glands against people and objects. This marks them with their scent. Only cats and a few other animals can smell the odor.

TODAY'S CAT FACT
A CAT'S TAIL

A cat's tail is an extension of his backbone. Cats use their tails to keep their balance. When a cat is falling, he whips out his tail and twists his body to land on his feet.

Cats also use their tail to communicate. For example, a happy cat will walk with her tail held high.

Cats can live without tails. Manx cats are born without tails. Many of them have a short stub but they are mostly known for being entirely tailless.

TODAY'S CAT FACT
CATS WHISKERS

Your cat's whiskers, also known as vibrissae or tactile hairs, are rooted more deeply into the body than the shorter top-fur coat.

In addition to the 8-12 whiskers on either side of his nose, he also has shorter whiskers above his eyes, on his chin, and even on the backs on his lower legs.

Cat whiskers shed and grow back naturally. Never trim or cut your cat's whiskers. Without these tactile hairs, cats become very disoriented and frightened.

TODAY'S CAT FACT
BRUSHING YOUR CAT'S TEETH

Here are some steps to follow when brushing your cat's teeth.

*Get your cat used to the idea of getting their teeth brushed. Gently massage their gums with your fingers or touch them with a cotton swab.

*After a few sessions of massaging the gums, get them used to the taste of the toothpaste. Put a small amount of cat-formulated toothpaste on their lips.

*Next, introduce a toothbrush that is made for cats. The ones that you wear over your finger give your cat's gums a nice massage.

*Apply toothpaste, that is made for cats, to their gums.

It is best to get your cat's teeth examined by a vet before you start brushing them. Many cats have mild gingivitis and it can hurt their gums if you brush them too hard.

Note: The best time to get your cat started with brushing their teeth is when they are a kitten so they will be used to it as they grow older.

TODAY'S CAT FACT
CATS TEETH

Cats grow two sets of teeth in their lifetime. The first set, which consists of 26 teeth, are known as their milk teeth. The teeth start to appear when the cat is about four weeks old and they will have their whole set by the time they reach the age of six weeks old.

By the time the cat is about six months old, the milk teeth will have fallen out and been replaced by 30 permanent teeth.

Cats use their teeth for grasping, cutting and shredding food. Their teeth are also useful for self-defense.

TODAY'S CAT FACT
GROOMING

Cats instinctively clean themselves. They do this by licking their fur with their tongue and they also rub and scratch their fur with their paws. Each day cats lick a paw and wash their face and head with the wet paw. But cats do not always groom themselves well.

As an owner, we need to comb or brush a cat's fur everyday to remove loose hairs. This is essential for long-haired cats to prevent the coat from tangling and matting.

Daily brushing or combing reduces the amount of loose hair that cats swallow when cleaning themselves. Swallowed hair can wad up in their stomach forming a hairball.

Kittens should also be brushed or combed to make it easier to care for them as they get older.

HEALTHY EARS

A healthy feline outer ear has a layer of hair on the outer surface with no bald spots and the inner surface is clean and light pink. If there is any discharge, redness, or swelling, the cat should be seen by a vet.

EXAMINING THE EAR

To examine the ear, gently fold back the ear and look down the ear canal. Healthy ears should be a pale pink color. If the ears have an excessive amount of wax, dark colored debris, or an odor, the cat should be examined by a veterinarian.

Happy New Year Strudel!!
Hope everything is well at the cathouse. I am settling down and I just love it here. I got a new cat tree on Sunday. It had two dangling mice which lasted about 20 seconds, I bit them off. I am having lots of fun batting and carrying them all around. Mom played with me last night hiding the mice and she said I acted like a dog! What an insult!!

Mom is getting everything lined up for remodeling, some men are coming Friday to make a template of our bathroom countertop. Mom picked out a nice piece of white onyx. Then she is getting recessed lighting, a travertine fireplace and eventually wood floors. And then repainting. Things she wanted to do for a long time but couldn't because she did not want to disturb Sabrina.

Hugs and purrs,
Luigi

Good afternoon kitties....do you smell them cookies mom is baking?? Today's topic: MOVING ANXIETY!!

Your new home is beautiful. You & the family are going to be so happy here. But what's this?? Do you detect a sourpuss in the crowd? Is that your cat scratching up the furniture, urinating on the rug, looking for a place to hide or perhaps plotting an escape from your lovely new home?

BE A PACK RAT: If your kitty is particularly fond of a certain piece of furniture, take it along. Don't even thin k it won't fit in with your new home. Taking it along will make Fluffy feel comfy as she settles in. Her scent is on it, she's used to it and it is comforting to her.

GIVE HER THE SHIRT OFF YOUR BACK: One way to help your pet get used to a new place is to make her sleeping area smell like you. They can be much more relaxed if they smell something or someone familiar around them.

PROVIDE A QUIET SPACE: In the midst of moving, it's hard for your pet to get settled in her new abode. Be sure never to leave her locked in for more then 20 minutes and when you go to see her bring her in lots of treats and comfort her.

BE CONSISTENT: Keep as close to your old routine as possible after your move...it is very important for your pet to see nothing has to change. Pets need patterns and predictability, especially after a move. Walk Fido at the same time each day, let your cat sleep with you if she is used to it...feed them at the same time, it will make a big difference.

FOIL ESCAPE ARTISTS: It's critical to keep a close eye on your pet to ensure they don't sneak away while you're moving in. Never put your cat outdoors right after a move, wait for at least a month so she will be used to her new home...make sure fences are all the way to the ground to prevent escaping under them. Make sure you have her ID tags updated, so she should escape and is found, your new neighbor can know where to bring her home.

PLAN AHEAD: Try to schedule your move so someone in the family can spend several days at home with your pet before you run off back to work. The worst thing you can do is leave your pet alone in a new home all alone where he might feel abandoned.

~~~CATS ONLY~~~
KEEP HER NEARBY: It is not unusual for a cat to say adios to her new home and head back to her old 'stomping grounds' after a move. To prevent this, do not allow Fluffy outside alone for about a month, and after a month, you can take her outside on a leash for the first few weeks til she is used to her new yard. NEVER leave your cat outside alone for long periods of time.
Hi Strudel!!
We hope you have a wonderful holiday!! Mom did not make plans to go to Europe this year because of Sabrina, so she is just going to go to Arizona for a few days. Maybe she'll see some snow in the mountains on the way!! I am settling in and I think I like it here, Mom told me she will start up the fish tank, but after the remodeling is done. She put off lots of things because she did not want to upset Sabrina. She is getting estimates and I think I may have to stay at the Purring Parrot a few days when this is going on... Anyway, we hope your mom got some of her nouget and other treats, and that you all have a wonderful holiday!! Hugs,
Good afternoon kitties. Today's topic is: BLADDER CONTROL PROBLEMS:!!
Few things are less savory than discovering an unpleasant odor emanating from your potted plants or a puddle in your living room. Oh no, she has done it again. It is normal for puppies and kittens to make mistakes. But when your grown up pet has suddenly stopped making it to litter box or back yard on time, there could be something physically wrong.
HOLD THE NIGHTCAP: To help keep floors dry while you sleep, try putting out only a small amount of water at night. Don't stop the water entirely. For some pets going without water can be dangerous.
PROVIDE EXTRA BATHROOMS: When Fluffy has poor control, the last thing she needs is a litter box that's far away. To make sure she can get relief when she needs it, have an extra litter box on every floor.
KEEP IT TIDY: Even desperate cats can be finicky, and if the litter isn't kept clean, they refuse to use it. Clean out your cats boxes with each bowel movement, or at least once a day.
WHEN TO SEE THE VET: While even the best-behaved pet can have accidents, a sudden change for the worse could mean trouble. Pets that urinate frequently or in all the wrong places could have a bladder infection, diabetes, hormone imbalance or even kidney failure.
Call your vet if any changes in your pets usual habits persist for more then 2 days or if the urine is discolored or if it's difficult for her to go.
Good afternoon kitties. Today's topic is: MATTED COATS!!
Is your pet having a bad hair day? Is her coat all gnarly and matted??? It's not much fun getting tangled up with matted fur. Hundreds of hairs can be involved in just one mat.
KEEP HER DRY: Once your pets matted hair gets wet, if they get wet, they will be even more difficult to remove. So keep her dry until you get the mats out.
LET FINGERS DO THE WALKING: Untangling a mat takes patience, but it can be done. Starting at the ends of the hairs and working inward--hair by hair if necessary--divide the mat in half with your fingers. Then divide it in quarters and pull til they come out. Then run a comb through the hair to make her coat smooth.
GIVE MATS THE BRUSH OFF: Your pets brush can be a great mat-fighter. Beginning near the tips of the hair and using short rapid strokes, gently brush upward. As the hair gets smooth, gradually work your way down toward the skin.
COAX THEM OUT WITH CORNSTARCH: A light sprinkling of cornstarch makes stubborn mats easier to pull apart.It helps the hair glide right out of the mat. As you work, add more cornstarch as needed.
SLIDE THEM OUT WITH SPRAY: Pet stores sell sparys made specifically for detangling mats. They typically contain lanolin, which helps hairs glide out of the mat. Make sure to get "Feline Friendly" if used for cats.
TAKE IT IN STAGES: If your pet has more than one mat or one large mat that's particularly tough, it's a good idea to do the job in stages. Work on them 10 minutes at a time, then give your pet extra love and maybe a special treat.
GET THEE TO A GROOMER: Professional groomers have special tools to help untangle tough mats. It's important to remember that even groomers sometimes give up and take a shortcut.
BRUSH HIM UP: Once your pet is mat-free, giving him a daily brushing will help keep his coat smooth. Since every pets coats are different, ask your local pet store for the best brush to use on your pet.
GET HER IN CONDITION: Using a conditioner will help keep your pets coat smooth and healthy. Apply the conditioner once a week. Follow label instructions and for cats, make sure it is "Feline Friendly".
TAKE A SHORT CUT: One fool-proof way to prevent matting is to keep your pets coat short. It's much better in the long run to prevent mats and having to get rid of them.
Good afternoon kitties. Mom is tired today, no sleep last night, worked all day today, so hopefully we will spell properly here: {MOL} Today's topic: WOUNDS!
In your view, she may be mans best friend, and he may be a purrfect pet. Unfortunately, the other critters in your neighborhood may not hold your four-legged friend in the same high regard! So when nasty things happen to your companion, like wounds, abscesses and bleeding, here are some tips:
TAKE PRECAUTIONS: Experts recommend muzzling your furry friend before treating injuries. If you happen to touch the sore area, he may lash out and bite. If you have no muzzle, try rolling gauze around her mouth and under her chin and tie it behind her ears.
TRY WRAPPING HER UP: If your pet is too small to muzzle, try wrapping her up in a towel, pillowcase or blanket before beginning treatment. To avoid making it difficult for her to breathe, don't wrap her too tight or for too long.
FIRST AID COMES FIRST: Stop the bleeding is number 1. As soon as possible, apply firm pressure to the wound with your hand or a clean piece of cloth....maintain the pressure until the bleeding stops. If the bleeding doesn't stop within 10 minutes, take your pet to the Vet right away.
MAKE THE FUR FLY: Once bleeding is under control, the next step is to clean the wound thoroughly. Start by trimming away any fur around the wound. TRY using an electric clippers if you have one, they are best for removing the fur without accidentally gouging the animal.
PASTE ON PROTECTION: To prevent fresh clipped hairs from falling into the wound, coat it with water soluble K-Y jelly. The hairs with stick to the jelly and can easily be washed away.
DO SOME DEEP CLEANING: Flush deep cuts or punctures with warm water to expel germ-covered hair or debris that might contaminate the wound. Soap and water are best, you may also apply a thin coat of triple antibiotic ointment.
BUBBLES MEAN TROUBLE: Never use an antiseptic such as Hydrogen Peroxide or rubbing alcohol because they further irritate the injured tissue.
LET 'EM LICK: When dogs & cats get injured, their tongues automatically go to work. Do not interfere with nature. plan. Licking does no harm and it may actually help heal the wound.
WATCH OUT FOR ABSCESSES: While most minor wounds will heal on their own, occasionally an abscess will form. An abscess is a pocket of pus beneath the skin in indicates infection. See your vet if you see an abscess on your pet...The Vet will probably need to drain the abscess and give your furry friend an oral antibiotic.
TOMORROW: MATTED COATS!!!
Good afternoon kitties. Today's topic is all about our eating habits: FUSSY EATING!
You probably remember Morris, the finicky feline whose fussy eating catapulted him to commercial fame. If you have your own "Morris" at home and he turns his nose up at everything you have to offer, here are some tips to perk up his taste-buds.
WALK AWAY AT MEALTIME: Instead of begging your pet to eat, put his meal down on the floor and walk away, when he gets hungry enough, he will eat it {says who?}
SET A TIME LIMIT: If your pet isn't finished eating in an hour, pick up the food and put it away...try again at a later time, but only leave it out 1 hour...when your pet realizes if he doesn't eat he will go hungry, he will eat rather then starve.
TABLE THE SCRAPS: While you pet loves leftovers and mealtime handouts, those rich goodies may be spoiling his appetite...would you eat cat/dog food if you knew you were getting steak, chops, chicken or burger every night?
SOME LIKE IT HOT: If your pet walks away from dry kibble, try adding warm water. This will soften the food and make it more appealing. Who doesn't enjoy a nice warm meal?
TANTALIZE HER TASTE BUDS: If your pet refuses to eat, try something a little different, try putting scraps of roast beef or burger in her food and mix it up. Don't overdo it as you might wind up with a plump pet.
WHEN TO SEE THE VET: You know there's a problem when you whip up Fluffy or Fido's fave meal and he doesn't even want to take a lick. Most of the time it isn't nothing to worry about, some dogs can go 3-4 days without food...could be he has a tummy ache.
With cats however, liver function can be impaired even after short periods without food. So if Fluffy hasn't eaten in 2 days, take her to the Vet. Your Vet can discover why kitty isn't eating and recommend treatment!
TOMORROW: VOMITING!
For your condolences. We are sorry that we took so long but Mom is still very sad, she misses me so much. We had been together for over 19 years and we were so bonded with no other kitties interfering for attention. I sent Mom another kitty, to honor me by helping a homeless kitty,she will get his page up soon. He will never replace me but Mom has stopped crying so much. Mom hopes to get me back in my engraved box next week from the Pet Memorial Park, and she thinks she will feel better after I am back home. She also ordered an engraved metal badge in my memory for the cat statue in the courtyard of the San Diego Humane Society, and she can't wait to visit there to see it.
Thanks again for your kind words.
Good afternoon Kitties. I trust you all had a pawsome Thanksgiving! Today's topic is: MANGE!!
It sounds like a disease associated with junkyard dogs, but even pampered pets can get mange, and it doesn't make for a pretty pet. Mange causes small red hairless areas on pets body that causes oozing!! Mange occurs when mite burrow under the skin, so here are a few tips to help your pet!
DOUSE IT WITH A DIP: Pets with scabies often get intensely itchy. It's like having mosquito bites on top of mosquito bites. Soaking your pet in a lime/sulfer medication, such as Lymdyp, diluted with water will kill the mites and help relieve itching. This dip is available at: Kennel Vet, PO Box 835, Belmore, NY 11710. Dip your pet for 10-15 minutes..do not rinse and do not towel dry. The dip must stay on your pets fur in order to work.
DON'T NEGLECT OTHER PETS: If you have more then one pet with scabies, chances are good your other pets may get it, too. You have to assume they've been exposed so you should treat them.
DO THE LAUNDRY: While mites spend their entire lives on the host animal, some might slip off and return to cause trouble another day. Be sure to wash your pets bedding or any area in which she sleeps.
FIGHT IT WITH FAR: Fatty acid supplements are fairly popular to use on skin disorders. Supplements are available at Pet stores nationwide.
KEEP HIM CLEAN: Regular grooming will help remove scaly skin and scabs caused by mange. Done regularly, it can also keep your pet mange-free.
FEED HER WELL: Since mange often affects pets that are poorly nourished, giving your pet a quality food can help provide protection, a better diet mean a healthier pet.
FORGO MOTOR OIL: Pouring motor oil on your pet is a passed-down home remedy for mange and it does NOT work. In fact, since pets will lick the oil, it can be harmful. So leve the motor oil in garage.
WHEN TO SEE HER VET: If your pet sudden;y starts going bald because of mange, it means he has a serious problem. When you notice those red, balding area's on your pet, take him to the vet for treatment.
Keep them suggestions coming in, tomorrow: RINGWORM!!!
happy thanksgiving!
janet sure did a lot here this morning shoveling the heaviest of the snow this morning from 5-8am, walking the big block taking pictures of the snow on things before it fell off hours later and then coming back to finish cleaning up what the snow blower left behind and there was another mess out there from what was falling off the trees, but then nat did a next door neighbors house and also cleaned the front/south side of the roof and gut-ters leaving the rest for janet in a half hour's time. she had mommy up around 6 to get the turkey into the oven to early as it was ready by 9:45!!! sandy,ab,haley,angels
KELS KAT REMEDIES
Good evening kitties. Today's topic: FIGHTING. Suggested by my sister, KALI!
Every night your cat goes out looking for trouble--and comes back looking he tangled with a blender. While fighting is scary to watch and dangerous for the combatants, it's extremely common!
DON'T GET IN THE MIDDLE: Dogs and cats in the heat of battle aren't discriminating about what or who they bite. Many owners have been mauled while trying to break up a fight, so keep your hands clear. If you feel you must break up a fight, throw a blanket over them, this will protect your hands.
GO DEEP & LOUD: When you see a fight brewing, interrupt the aggression with the loudest, deepest "NO" you can muster. Pets associate a low-pitched voice with a threatening growl and will take it more seriously.
GIVE THEM A BLAST: If the squabble occurs in the vicinity of a garden hose, turn it on your fighting pets...this will "cool" them off.
SIT OUT MINOR BRAWLS: When dogs or cats meet, you can expect a certain amount of posturing, hissing, growling, or tussling. In most cases it is their way of getting acquainted. Even if they start squabbling, chances are the ruckus will calm down in a minute or 2.
FOR CATS ONLY!!
GIVE THEM SEPARATE QUARTERS: Bringing a new cat into the family can raise tension for both the newcomer and the the resident cat. To keep fights to a minimum, provide separate litter boxes, and feed them in separate rooms til they get used to each other.
PROVIDE AN EASY EXIT: When bringing 2 cats together for the 1st time, make sure there is an escape route. This will help prevent them from feeling trapped.
GET THEM IN TWOS: If you want to have 2 or more cats, get them at the same time as kittens. Cats that grow up together are less likely to fight then those they meet later in life.
KEEP THEM INDOORS: If you really love your cat[s] keep her indoors...if you must put them outdoors, build an outdoor enclosure or kitty playground!
TOMORROW: DEPRESSION!
Hi Strudel!
Thanks for thinking of me. I did not have a good night and Mom got very little sleep. I had to get up during the night a few times for water and the box and even though I have a bench next to the bed to get back up it is easier to meow and have Mom pick me up. Mom was very worried but I seem to be better today and even ate a little of the prescription canned Iams. She just got that to try because Dr Candy said absolutely no more canned food for me unless it is prescription. I do like the dry KD. We are having company tonight so Mom hopes I visit with everyone, I usually do. Hugs and purrs,
Hi Strudel!
Thank you so much for coming by with congrats on my COTD, today! It was a total surprise and a shock, seeing as how I only had 2 visits, yesterday and no special things going on! How did that happen? I have lots of thank you to send out, so I can't blog much, but I hope I can do better over the weekend. That is if Dad doesn't have a million things he wants Mom to help him with...MOL! So, I'm leaving you a vote and wishes for a blessed evening and sweet dreams. Take care and I love ya!
a bit on the nippy side
out there when janet walked earlier this morning and she was a bit ticked at herself for missing the sunrise by 5 minutes, but she got it right after it had come up which beats nothing, right? we sure think so! not long after she was in, she was back out the door again this time walking the big block with pepper and by that time she was more than ready to sit down and continue with blogging. she and nat just got back from getting a few jugs of milk to tie them over till at least this weekend if need be, but likely they'll pick up a few more whenever they do the grocery shopping either tomorrow or friday depending which day has the better sales. sandy,ab,haley,angels
Hi Strudel!
We're glad your mom had a great time in Orlando.
Mom is not sure if I get another blood test tomorrow or the week after, but she sure was encouraged that I gained 2 oz and I seem to be perkier. Mom will know when I don't feel well....I always am waiting at the door for her to come home from work, I have only missed a few days, and that is when I was not feeling well and I stay in bed. Yes, it is all about quality of life and when Mom thinks I no longer feel well, she will help me cross the bridge, that is the best gift she could give me! Hugs and purrs,
♥ Thank You So Much!! ♥
... for coming to my birthday pawty yesterday and for giving me this wonderful surprise this morning!
Mom and I haven't been feeling so well lately and we have not been very active on CC but we miss everyone. Our CC family is always in our thoughts.
I had a great birthday. Mom and Dad gave me tuna treats along with lots of cuddles and a new catnip toy.
I'm having antibiotics to help me with an infection in my skin and although I don't like them at all, they are making me feel better.
Thank you for your friendship, lovely blogs, goodies and nice gifts! You are the best friends in the whole world!
FRIENDS
A friend is like a flower,
a rose to be exact.
Or maybe like a brand new gate
that never comes unlatched.
A friend is like an owl,
both beautiful and wise.
Or perhaps is like a ghost,
whose spirit never dies.
A friend is like a heart
that goes strong until the end.
Where would we be in this world
if we didn't have a friend?...
With much love,
from your friends always,
Mrs. Pucca and all the Buenos Aires Kitties!
Hi Strudel
Mom did want to ask your mom how long was it before she could see that Beaker benefited from Epogen? Mom forgot to ask Dr Candy... we'll be back there Thursday so she can ask... she thinks Dr Candy said I would be getting 3 shots and then another blood test to see if it is working, she said sometimes it does not work, and also some kitties can develop an immunity to it. Mom's friend's husband just got a shot of it...he has kidney failure too. We hope Orzo does not have kidney failure but we know that your mom knows what to look fur. My mom also wants to thank you for all your help and support. Hugs and purrs,
Hi Strudel
We're sorry that Orzo has CRF too. I go for my first shot today.We'll let you know how it goes. Mom just wants me to have the best quality of life possible,so she is hoping this will make me feel better, not that I feel that bad yet, but we are hoping that it will avoid all the nasty side effects of CRF. I have the nausea under control now with Cerenia too! Hugs and purrs,
