Wolfie lets take a look at one the worlds greatest sopranos in the past 100 years. She was born right here in Connecticut.Rosa Ponselle was born on January 22, 1897, in Meriden, Connecticut, the youngest of three children. Her parents were Italian Neapolitan immigrants. Rosa had an exceptionally mature voice at an early age and sang on natural endowment with little, if any, vocal training. Rosa began as a silent-movie accompanist in and around Meriden by singing popular ballads to her audiences while the projectionist changed film reels. Carmela, Rosa’s oldest sister, was already an established singer in vaudeville. Three years later, in 1915, Carmela brought Rosa to audition for her vaudeville agent. The agent was impressed with her voice, and she was hired to perform with Carmela as a "sister act". In 1918 Carmela was studying in New York with a well-connected voice teacher/agent named William Thorner. Thorner auditioned Rosa, and agreed to give her lessons. Soon afterward, Thorner persuaded the great tenor Enrico Caruso, star of the Metropolitan Opera, to his studio to hear Carmela and Rosa sing. Caruso was deeply impressed with Rosa's voice and arranged for an audition with the Met, as a result of which the Met's general manager, Giulio Gatti-Casazza, offered Rosa a contract for the 1918-19 season. Rosa Ponselle made her Metropolitan Opera debut on November 15, 1918, as Leonora in Verdi's La forza del destino, opposite Caruso. It was her first performance on any opera stage. In spite of an almost paralyzing case of nerves she scored a tremendous success, both with the public and with the critics. In the following Met seasons, Ponselle's roles included the lead soprano roles in La Juive, opposite Caruso, William Tell and in 1927 the role that many considered her greatest achievement, the title role in Bellini's Norma. In addition to her operatic activities, which were centered at the Met, Ponselle had a lucrative concert career, a tour of the West coast, abroad to London and then Italy. Ponselle retired in 1937; she just let her career slip away. A variety of factors contributed to this: her receding upper register, her bitterness over the Met management's refusal to accede to her requests regarding repertoire, a non-stop, intense 21-year career with continual bouts of performance nerves; her marriage in 1936 to Baltimore socialite Carle Jackson; and her enjoyment of the relaxed life she now had without the demands of performance. She and Jackson built a luxurious home near Baltimore, Maryland, the Villa Pace, where she lived the rest of her life. Her marriage to Jackson was rocky and they divorced in 1949 In the late 1940s, Ponselle became the guiding force of the fledgling Baltimore Civic Opera Company, providing coaching and voice lessons for the young singers who appeared with the company. Among those who coached with her were Beverly Sills, Sherrill Milnes, Plácido Domingo and James Morris. Ponselle died at her estate on May 25, 1981

You do know who we have to thank for public parks, no Maggie but I bet you know. Frederick Law Olmsted was prominent in promoting and planning recreational parks across the country. Frederick Law Olmsted was born in Hartford, Connecticut on April 26, 1822. He did not matriculate at college because of weak eyes, but he attended lectures at Yale University intermittently and became an honorary member of the class of 1847. He also studied engineering. In 1844 Olmsted decided to become a farmer and, after getting practical experience, settled on Staten Island, where he operated a farm until 1854. In 1859 he married Mary Cleveland Perkins Olmsted, the widow of his brother; the couple had two children. In 1851 Olmsted visited Andrew Jackson Downing, who with others had conceived the idea of creating a vast park in New York City. Before realizing his dream, Downing died. Olmsted kept the idea alive and in 1857 was appointed superintendent of what became Central Park. He and Calvert Vaux then won the design competition for the park, and in 1858 Olmsted was advanced to chief architect of Central Park. During the Civil War he resigned his appointment over political differences and in 1863 accepted the superintendence of the Frémont Mariposa mining estates in California. When Olmsted returned to New York in 1865, he and Vaux were reappointed landscape architects for Central Park. The Olmsted firm became the foremost landscape architects in America. Their projects included Prospect Park, Brooklyn 1865; the village of Riverside near Chicago 1868; Mount Royal Park, Montreal 1873-1881; the grounds of the Capitol, Washington, D.C. 1874-1885; the Boston park system 1875-1895; Stanford University, Palo Alto, California. 1886-1889; and Jackson Park, Chicago 1895. Olmsted's most important late work was the design for the World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago 1890-1893. Restless by nature, Olmsted traveled frequently and often published his diaries and talks. He wrote Walks and Talks of an American Farmer in England 1852, A Journey in the Seaboard Slave States 1856, A Journey through Texas 1857, and A Journey in the Back Country (1860).Always interested in publishing, he and C. S. Sargent founded the journal Garden and Forest. Olmsted further encouraged park planning by publishing Public Parks and the Enlargement of Towns 1871 and A Consideration of the Justifying Value of a Public Park 1881. Today we will be going to see a very pretty lesser known waterfall called Bridalveil Falls It is not a real difficult hike so all kittens over 4 months of age can choose to come with us. For breakfast this morning Chef Sammy is making camp out pancake sandwich rolls which is bacon & scrambled eggs rolled up in a pancake with butter. The syrup is cooked in the pancake. (luv them) We had such success fishing yesterday that there is enough fish for fish tacos tonight.

Fuzzy and family!
How is your weather? Ours is sweltering! Well, Barney and the dogs are the only ones allowed out with mom, so the rest of us don't know first hand. We did make another discovery. Molly and Andy got in the guest room! The one with the 5 guest cats! One of them escaped and 2 of us got in! Mom threw up her hands and said find out for yourselves, since no one on either side was fighting and all of us have had our health cks, tests and shots. Mom agrees that food makes a dif and the vet even agreed when she examined Barney at his physical! She was impressed at the progress he made this year and asked what he was on.

Fuzzy and family!
Hope all is well there! Know its been way too long! Our company is gone and mom is back from her short vacation up North. We are all well and so are the tornado cats, who are still with us until their home is completely restored. Mom said most of them are getting fat staying with us! She is able to afford better quality food than they were on. At first she was not going to change their diet, but decided they needed more nutritional support and the litterboxes were more stinky than ours! A couple of the cats are kind of skinny and have health issues. She is buying up extra food and hopes to donate it to them as they return home, when the time comes. She has also managed to remove all mats from the 2 that are longhaired cats and treated a couple cats for earmites, their vet said they didn't have. Funny thing, they are no longer scratching their ears! She now has taken pics, but has to put them on the computer, so she can add them to our pages or possibly create a page, not sure.

hi fuzzy i am bad, i have not visited since june, how is everything with u. we are all fine here. been having hot hot muggy muggy stormy weather, dont like stormy, it messes with my hunting. thunderfoot swatted u votey button. he is 17 weks old taday. doodlebug has started playing with him now. sap!!!. i guess it is okay, i just dont like to be bothered with him. i am too much a loner, the only one i want messing with me is mommy. come by and visit

We don't have A/C but we have lots of cool places to nap, the deck to nap on or just watch things from. We almost always have a breeze off the sea, so we stay pretty comfortable. I hope you all had a fun filled weekend ! I took a break Yesterday since my mom just HAD to get some things done around the house and yard. I managed to visit only a few but will do my beast to get to everyone when mom gets home from work. * * * The beach is still a fun place to play. Music by Misty. Sir Leo has the Crab Skack stocked with fine food. Chef Sammy has daily specials. Exit is bringing a power boat, submarine and a few more unteresting toys. There is a HUGE tamarind tree to climb in. You can enjoy the view, nap or hunter in it. I sure hope all is fine at your house.I see you all have a new Kitty the last time I talked to you it was just you and Wuzzy.So like I said it has been a long time.So what all have you been up to?
Myself I have been doing what I do best and that is a lot of Mouse catching and bird watching and stuff.Me and my little sister Spookie do all the mousing around here but we do get a little help from our puppy brother Mocky.Oya Also our kitty brother My Buddy does a little mousing also.But Me and Spookie catch the most of them around here.

LOST PART FOUR HAPPY 4TH OF JULY
Mom had only been gone for a few minutes when I heard the door handle rattle. She must have forgotten something I thought to myself and didn’t bother getting up. The drivers door opened and a man I had never seen before climbed into the drivers seat and reached over and unlocked the passenger door. A lady I didn’t know either sat down in the passenger seat as the man fiddled under the dash and then fired up the car. I sure wish I had gotten up to investigate but I just thought well it isn’t mom so I am going back to sleep. The man told the lady “this will be a good car to get to Reno in and it has a full tank of gas”. They headed out of the parking lot towards the east bound freeway. Mom was going to be in for a big surprise.

LOST PART THREE
It was an overcast spring day in central California and on this particular day we were going to Sacramento to go to this great big store called Costco. Now I don’t care for Costco so much because since I have gotten too big to be smuggled in inside moms purse I have to wait in the car for her to do the shopping. Once the weather gets warmer my Costco trips will be suspended until the cooler weather returns in the fall. I usually curl up on my special blanket in the back and take a kitty nap until she returns from the shopping with a basket full of litter,cat food and some items that smell pretty good. Mom got out of the car and said “guard the car Rusty and I will be back in a little while” so I headed to the back for my usual nap.

HELLO MY SLEEPY FRIENDS !
When you are tired, you are tired. Take it from me ! I had to do my daily COTM blogs in several time segmants every day. I was only at the castle for my coronation. I am an island cat and I don't know anything about castles, dragons or what to do at a castle. The castle is OPEN to any and all who want to stay there and play. I thought cats could have lots of summer fun out in the fresh air and sunshine. I hope you give it a try. Soon it will e fall, then winter so you will need to be in a warm place like the castle. Enjoy this month outside ! Take it EASY !

The cat, however, decided that life in Indiana was better and made the 700 mile trip back to his old home in only three weeks. The cat could not have simply remembered the route back to Indiana because he had made the original trip to Georgia in an express train! What is even more amazing is that cats can find their way "home" to places they've never even seen before! For example, there is the New York veterinarian who found a new home for his cat rather than subject it to the long trip to California, where he was moving. Months later a cat that looked just like his former companion -- right down to the distinctive bump on its tail that left no room for doubt -- showed up at his new West Coast house! Then there's Smoky, a Persian cat who got lost at a roadside stop in Oklahome while his family was moving to Tennessee. SHE WAS FINE ALL DAY, PLAYING AND SUCH AND THEN SHE JUST GOT REAL FLOPPY, ( SHE WAS LIKE A DISHRAG WHEN MOMMY PICKED HER UP) AND RUSHED HER TO AN EMERGE. DID XRAYS AND FOUND AN ENLARGED VEIN GOING TO HER HEART. MOM BROUGHT HER BACK HOME AND SHE PASSED RIGHT AT THE STROKE OF MIDNIGHT. MOMMY CRIED AND CRIED. AM LEAVING U A VOTE. Good Morning!
Dearest Fuzzy and family--- we're finally back! Boy is CC slow this morning! We were in a hurry to tell all our good friends we have a new computer and wireless service set up and it is being slower than anything! We have been starved for visiting our friends almost 3 weeks! Hope to get back in the swing. Mom is off work for the summer and we hope to get a lot more attention. Only one problem-- she is into rearranging furniture and cleaning our house-- help! No fair moving our cat trees without permission! Missed you so much!

What’s mew with you? We are having record-breaking heat of 101 degrees & high humidity, but that is summertime in the south! Thank goodness for central air! MerryBelle is stretched out on the sofa, I am resting in my pretty purple bed that my sweet boyfuriend Rhoamin sent for our anniversary, and brat boy is cuddled in Nana’s lap.

Mommy’s paws have finally recovered from answering all of Casper Todd’s 5th COTD blogs. We will not be online again until next week. Mommy and Nana have doctor appointments. Glad it’s them and not me!

Did you get settle at the Castle. It is too bad of your Mom to forget your birthdays. One of the Chefs will bake you a cake. Do you want a job at the Castle? You can hunt See Wilson for orange jacket. The fishing contest Tues & Wed. Be sure and take a tour of the Castle with Sissy and Clay has the carriage ready for rides through the gardens. Fishing contests Tues & Wed. rides are available from Cherish & Sabrina to the fishing hole.
At home Mom tells me that the weather is still unsettled as it is cloudy out. Our tomato plant is not doing too well as it is not hot enough. Dad has gone out for our walk. I miss the time with him. Not a lot is happening. The patio door is ajar and the birds are still coming to the feeder next door. Mom misplaced her keys this morning and just now found them. Mom needs to find time for the last session of Cat College 500. To know what is happening at the Castle check out the Mews room #46883
