Pooky is a wonderful cat. Sure, she gets into trouble all the time, but she is very sweet and amazing. She has gone through like, 12 of her 9 lives (MOL) and just keeps on going. No, she does not know how to sit, how to meow on command or walk on a leash, but she has mastered capturing my heart.

My favorite tricks and treats are: no she doesn't know any tricks and she likes cheese and meat mostly.

Where I hang out: .
Thee dishwasher, with us, on the floor as long as there is something, anything, underneath her... even a piece of paper will do. Her bench (see gallery).

My favorite grubs: .
She eats Wysong cat kibble and raw chicken too.

My pet peeves: .
Not much bothers her.

What I love about my owners: .
"I love my Mama because she loves ME!"

My cat hobbies: .
Be a sweetheart, and counter surfing...

Pet motto: .
"Live, Meow, Love"

How We Met

.
A good friend of ours (that lives on a farm) gave us a call one day saying that their female, outdoor, cat pretty much just abandoned two kittens. We went our friend's house, and there was Pooky, and her sister May. The kittens were adorable, they kept climbing up the back of their couch. We took them home that day.
They kittens were so little, they still needed milk. So, with a little syringe, we gave them milk. And we think we know why the kittens were abandoned! Pooky would gnaw on the syringe as she ate the milk, and she probably did that to her mother's nipples! May was weaned really easily, but not Pooky! And they both would fall asleep in their kitten food ... lol.
Sadly, when she was only two years old, May died. I think that she probably swallowed some string or something. She died, and Pooky missed her, I'm pretty sure. Pooky would walk around the house, meowing for about a day or two.

GOOD MORNING ANGEL POOKY & PAUL !
The Reef Bay trail starts at Centerline Road about 5 miles east of Cruz Bay. The trail leads between Centerline Road & the ruins of the Reef Bay sugar factory which is close to Genti Bay beach. This trail is very well kept and descends 937 feet from the road to the Reef Bay Valley. It will take approximately 2 hours of downhill trekking for you to enjoy the entire hike. Along the trail you will see many beautiful and unique sights. At the start of your hike you will notice a stone stairway just on the southern side of the road. This is where your journey begins. As you begin, you will see an old stone wall. This is all that is left of the wall that once protected the horsemill that once stood on these grounds. You will venture off through the sub-tropical forest on a trail that follows the course of the Reef Bay Gut. You will enjoy seeing on the different tropical vegetation that is known in this beautiful upper valley. You will notice many signs along your way that will give you a wealth of information regarding the environment around this valley. Some of the trees that you will see as you begin your descent include locust, sandbox, kapok, mammee apple and mango. The next great attraction will be the Josie Gut Sugar Estate. All that remains is the ruins. You will see the horsemill and its unusual circular shape which is being supported by the stone wall. As you leave Josie Gut and head back down to the sea you will relax just a bit as the incline is not as steep and the atmosphere changes into a dryer forest. The trees are not as large and the greenery is becoming denser. You will see the ruins of a small home that was in built in 1930. This area is known as Estate Par Force. Miss Anna Marsh was once the owner of this home and would give her permission for visitors to travel on down to the sea or to see the petroglyphs. In 1938, Miss Marsh was murdered and the house was left to decay. The next intersection you will find on your hike down the Reef Bay trail is the Petroglyph Trail going west. You will love taking this path even if it is off your course. It might be a nice time to have your picnic before you travel on down the trail. As you hike the rest of the way to the bay you will see citrus trees such as limes. The closer you get to the sea the trail will go through some low marshy type areas. The holes that you can see in the ground are created by land crabs that make this area home. Now, you are at the end of the trail and the Reef Bay sugar factory ruins are in sight. Most of all the land that you travel from Centerline Road to where you are now standing was once owned by the Marsh family. The restroom facilities that you notice were constructed with monies that Ladybird Johnson donated after her hike down Reef Bay Trail to find their were no facilities available.****** Pictures on the bottom of my page. There are many more pictures and more information if you google search it on your computer. You won't be sorry you took the time ! Enjoy !

HI ANGEL POOKY & PAUL 1
This is such a pretty and interesting place. You can wander around ALL DAY,there is so much to see. For cats it is lots of fun as there are so many nooks and crannies to explore. The view is breathtaking !
Virgin Islands National Park: Annaberg Plantation, as of 1780, was one of 25 active sugar producing factories on St. John. Other products produced at Annaberg were molasses and rum. Annaberg was named after William Gottschalk's daughter and translates to Anna's Hill. Gottschalk was the plantation owner. Slave labor was used to clear densely forested hillsides and to terrace the slopes around Annaberg to make farming possible. Slave labor was also used to plant, harvest and process the sugarcane. When slavery was abolished, plantations were divided. The 518 acres that were once Annaberg Plantation were divided into smaller farms.
Today the plantation ruins are protected by the Virgin Islands National Park and are open to the public. Trees have reclaimed the hillsides around Annaberg. A trail leads through factory ruins, slave quarters, windmill and other remains. Placards and signs along the trails describe how sugar was produced and discuss plantation life and the history behind sugar plantations on St. John and in particular Annaberg.
The windmill at Annaberg, one of focal points of the site, was built possibly between 1810 and 1830, and was one of the largest in the islands. Thirty four feet in diameter at the base and twenty feet at the top, the mill stands thirty eight feet high. When there was no wind to work the windmill, a horse mill would be used. The horses or mules were plodded in a circular motion; this turned the upright rollers in the center of the platform. Slaves passed cane stalk through the rollers and a box at the bottom caught the juice. The juice ran by gravity through gutters to the factory for processing. Three to five hundred gallons of juice could be produced in an hour.
The cane juice flowed first into a large copper kettle, where a fire was lit beneath. The excess water evaporated and workers would ladle the juice from one kettle to the next, down a line of five kettles. The juice eventually became concentrated through various levels of heating and evaporation. The concentrated juice was then placed in a box to crystallize. The crystallized brown sugar was then put in barrels that held up to 1600 pounds of sugar. Early removal from the last heated kettle prevented crystals from forming however produced molasses that was used to make rum.

HI ANGEL POOKY & PAUL
Well, are you all ready to leave for St.John ? Easy and most of The V.I.Kitties spent yesterday bringing chairs, tables, umbrellas, coolers, rafts, catamarans, small sailboats, snorkle gear, volley balls, beach balls, towels, sunscreen and most every thing else they could think of you might need over from Easys beach. There is fishing gear too. Any of you who have been to Easys beach and would rather go there, there is transportation. For others we will go to the World Famous Trunk Bay. There is no camping on Trunk Bay but just down the road is Cinnamon Bay, where you can pitch your tent. Of course there is Easys beach.

Trunk Bay is the most famous beach on St. John and possibly the most famous beach in all the Caribbean. It has perfect powdery white sand and an under water snorkel trail with plaques describing the various items that snorklers can see on the bottom.
It has consistently been voted one of the Ten Best Beaches in The World by Condé Nast Traveler magazine and has received similar recognition from other publications. Also, the National Geographic Society has labeled Trunk Bay as the most beautiful beach in the world. It is one of the most popular beaches on St. John.
St. John has 33 beautiful beaches that line its shores.

There will be members of my family around to answer questions and help you any way they can. Pete will have planes and helicopters to get you to St.Thomas then to St.John. I hope you enjoy !
Take care & stay safe ! Queen Angel Sugar

I will not watch the guinea pig constantly as the guinea pig likes to sleep once in a while.
The goldfish likes living in water and should be allowed to remain in its bowl.
I will not put a live mole in my food bowl and expect it to stay there until I get hungry.
I will not eat spider plants and hallucinate behind the toilet.
I will not drag the magnets (and the papers they are holding up) off of the refrigerator and then bat them underneath it so that they adhere to the underside.
I will learn to relax at the vet's office so they will start writing things in my records like "Good Kitty" and "Sweet Kitty" instead of the stuff that's there now like "MEAN!!" "BITER!!!" and "GET HELP!!!!!"
I will not be miffed at my human all day and then kiss her on the nose at 2:00 a.m. to tell her that she is forgiven and can now pet me.
I will not scratch the children of lawyers, no matter how much they chase me or how hard they pull my tail.
If I MUST claw my human, I will not do it in such a fashion that the scars resemble a botched suicide attempt.
If I must give a present to my human's overnight guests, my toy mouse is much more socially acceptable than a big live cockroach, even if it isn't as tasty.
I will not soak my catnip toy in the water bowl to make tea. I will not get high and sit there drinking my tea and kneading the floor afterwards. I will not then get delusions of grandeur and make tea in the toilet bowl or the tub. And I will not try to make tea with used socks, dirty panties or hair scrunches when my humans take the catnip toy away from me.
A warm pepperoni pizza is not a good place for a nap.

HAPPY NEW YEAR ANGEL POOKY & PAUL !
Thank you so much for your daily votes in December. Without you dear furrends I wouldn't have the honor of being Queen of January. Thanks again and God Bless you.

I will not stuff my rather large self into the rather small bird feeder (with my tail hanging out one side) and expect the birds to just fly in.
I will not teach the parrot to meow in a loud and raucous manner.
The dog can see me coming when I stalk her. She can see me and will move out of the way when I pounce, letting me smash into floors and walls. That does not mean I should take it as a personal insult when my humans sit there and laugh.
Yes, there are still two very large dogs in the backyard. There have been for several years. I don't have to act as if I've just discovered the Demon Horror of the Universe each time one of them appears in my window.
I will not play "dead cat on the stairs" while people are trying to bring in groceries or laundry, or else one of these days, it will really come true.
When the humans play darts, I will not leap into the air and attempt to catch them.
I will not swat my human's head repeatedly when she's on the family room floor trying to do sit ups.
When my human is typing at the computer, her forearms are *not* a hammock.
Computer and TV screens do not exist to backlight my lovely tail.
I am a walking static generator. My human doesn't need my help installing a new board in her computer.
I will not bring the city police to the front door by stepping on the speaker phone button and then the automatic 911 dial button.
I will not speed dial the overseas numbers.
I will not walk on the keyboard when my human is writing important emiognaioerp ga3qi4 taija3tgv aa35 a.
Any critter that lives in the house (hamsters), stay in the house and any wild critters (frogs and earthworms) stay outside. I am not allowed to set the hamster free in exchange for finding a frog to put in the fish tank.
I will not stalk the deer in the apple orchard next door. They have sharp hooves and could hurt me if they weren't laughing so hard.

Cat's New Year's Resolutions

I will not perch on my human's chest in the middle of the night and stare into her eyes until she wakes up.
We will not play Herd of Thundering Wildebeests Stampeding Across the Plains of the Serengeti over any human's bed while they're trying to sleep.
Screaming at the can of food will not make it open itself.
I cannot leap through closed windows to catch birds outside. If I forget this and bonk my head on the window and fall behind the couch in my attempt, I will not get up and do the same thing again.
I will not assume the patio door is open when I race outside to chase leaves.
I will not back up off the front porch and fall into the bushes just as my human is explaining to his girlfriend how graceful I am.
I will not complain that my bottom is wet and that I am thirsty after sitting in my water bowl.
I will not intrude on my human's candle-lit bubble bath and singe my bottom.
I will not stick my paw into any container to see if there is something in it. If I do, I will not hiss and scratch when my human has to shave me to get the rubber cement out of my fur.
If I bite the cactus, it will bite back.
It is not a good idea to try to lap up the powdered creamer before it dissolves in boiling coffee.
When I am chasing my tail and catch my back leg instead, I will not bite down on my foot. This hurts, and my scream scares my human.
When it rains, it will be raining on all sides of the house. It is not necessary to check every door.
Birds do not come from the bird feeder. I will not knock it down and try to open it up to get the birds out.

Cat's New Year's Resolutions

My human will never let me eat her pet hamster, and I am at peace with that.
I will not puff my entire body to twice its size for no reason after my human has finished watching a horror movie.
I will not slurp fish food from the surface of the aquarium.
I must not help myself to Q-tips, and I must certainly not proceed to stuff them down the sink's drain.
I will not eat large numbers of assorted bugs, then come home and puke them up so the humans can see that I'm getting plenty of roughage.
I will not lean way over to drink out of the tub, fall in, and then pelt right for the box of clumping cat litter. (It took FOREVER to get the stuff out of my fur.)
I will not stand on the bathroom counter, stare down the hall, and growl at NOTHING after my human has finished watching The X-Files.
I will not fish out my human's partial plate from the glass so that the dog can "wear" it and pretend to be my human. (It is somewhat unnerving to wake up, roll over in bed, and see the dog grinning at you with your own teeth.)
I will not use the bathtub to store live mice for late-night snacks.
I will not drag dirty socks up from the basement in the middle of the night, deposit them on the bed and yell at the top of my lungs (Burmese LOUD yowling) so that my human can admire my "kill."

A Cat's Prayer

Now I lay me down to sleep,
The king-size bed is soft and deep...
I sleep right in the center groove
My human can hardly move!

I've trapped her legs, she's tucked in tight
And here is where I pass the night
No one disturbs me or dares intrude
Till morning comes and "I want food!"

I sneak up slowly to begin
My nibbles on my human's chin.
She wakes up quickly, I have sharp teeth -
And my claws I will unsheath

For the morning's here and it's time to play
I always seem to get my way.
So thank you Lord for giving me
This human person that I see.

The one who hugs me and holds me tight
And sacrifices her bed at night.

It's Friday ! Thank you for stopping by to vote and for the nice comments. I really have enjoyed this month with all of you. I know it's been a busy month and I appreciate that you have found time to visit me and others. I found some New Yearrs resolutions made by a cat named Buddy. I will share them with you so maybe we can all get some ideas for our own resolutions. Thanks again ! Have a fun Friday !

Dry cat food is both tasty and nutritious, and it is always available. I need not starve myself and act pitiful all day long in anticipation of the canned food

I have long fur, and I must realize that this means that occasionally I will need to be brushed. When this happens I will not carry on like my skin is being scraped off by a cheese grater. This makes my cat buddies nervous

The Christmas tree is not made of catnip, and the ornaments are not toys.

When I allow the terror to overwhelm me and I decide to flee down the stairs as fast as I can, I will at least maintain enough clarity to make sure the door is open first. I will also strive to touch at least one of the fourteen steps on the way down.

When the black cat (a neighborhood stray) comes onto the deck looking for handouts I will not try to show off by climbing up the blinds.

I will try very hard to resist my urge to jump into the large black bags that are sometimes available in the kitchen. If I give in to my urges and get yucky stuff all over me I will submit to being sprayed off in the sink without trying to rip the human's flesh off.

Just because I was accidentally let into the garage once does not mean that it is now a part of my official domain. When I hear the human pulling into the garage I will not jump onto the washing machine ready to leap into the garage the moment the connecting door is opened. The sounds of grocery bags crashing to the floor scares me.

Monopoly of life:a lucky break just when U need it
A rags to riches tale:
On December 31, 1935, the game Monopoly was patented by Charles Darrow, an unemployed engineer in Germantown, Pennsylvania. He struggled with odd jobs to support his family in the years following the great stock market crash of 1929.
This fascinating story of corporate intrigue begins with the 30-year old, The Landlord's Game. It had a lot of the familiar Monopoly features like a "Go to Jail" square and utilities and properties for purchase. With his free time, Darrow modified it, basing his rental properties on his favorite resort town, Atlantic City.
Parker Brothers, at first, turned down Charles Darrow, explaining that his game contained "fifty-two fundamental errors" including: the game took too long to play, the rules were too complicated and there was no clear goal for the winner.
Parker Brothers later offered Charles Darrow royalties, on each new version of Monopoly sets sold. This generous deal made him a millionaire.
In 1970, a few years after Darrow's death, Atlantic City erected a commemorative plaque in his honor. It stands on the Boardwalk, near the corner of Park Place.

Twas the day after Christmas, and all through the house,
Every creature was hurting -- even the mouse.

The toys were all broken, their batteries dead;
Santa passed out, with some ice on his head.

Wrapping and ribbons just covered the floor, while
Upstairs the family continued to snore.

And I in my T-shirt, new Reeboks and jeans,
Went into the kitchen and started to clean.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the sink to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the curtains, and threw up the sash.

When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a little white truck, with an oversized mirror.

The driver was smiling, so lively and grand;
The patch on his jacket said "U.S. POSTMAN."

With a handful of bills, he grinned like a fox
Then quickly he stuffed them into our mailbox.

Bill after bill, after bill, they still came.
Whistling and shouting he called them by name:

"Now Dillard's, now Broadway's, now Penny's and Sears
Here's Levitz's and Target's and Mervyn's--all here!!

To the tip or your limit, every store, every mall,
Now chargeaway-chargeaway-chargeaway all!"

He whooped and he whistled as he finished his work.
He filled up the box, and then turned with a jerk.

He sprang to his truck and he drove down the road,
Driving much faster with just half a load.

Then I heard him exclaim with great holiday cheer,
"ENJOY WHAT YOU GOT ... YOU'LL BE PAYING ALL YEAR!"

Boxing Day

Despite its name, Boxing Day, which is celebrated on December 26 in Great Britain, has nothing to do with pugilistic competition. Nor is it a day for people to return unwanted Christmas presents. While the exact origins of the holiday are obscure, it is likely that Boxing Day began in England during the Middle Ages.
Some historians say the holiday developed because servants were required to work on Christmas Day, but took the following day off. As servants prepared to leave to visit their families, their employers would present them with gift boxes
Church Alms Boxes : Another theory is that the boxes placed in churches where parishioners deposited coins for the poor were opened and the contents distributed on December 26, which is also the Feast of St. Stephen. As time went by, Boxing Day gift giving expanded to include those who had rendered a service during the previous year. This tradition survives today as people give presents to tradesmen, mail carriers, doormen, porters, and others who have helped them.
St. Stephen's Martyrdom : The Feast of St. Stephen also takes place on December 26. St. Stephen was one of the seven original deacons of the Christian Church who were ordained by the Apostles to care for widows and the poor. For the success of his preaching and his devotion to Christ, St. Stephen was stoned to death by a mob. As he died, he begged God not to punish his killers.

Gratitude spurs us on to prove ourselves worthy of what others have done for us. The spirit of gratitude is a powerful energizer.” — Wilferd A. Peterson

MERRY CHRISTMAS ANGEL POOKY & FAMILY !
Merry Christmas ! I thank all of you for stopping by through the month to leave a vote in my Golden Stocking. I know all of your pawernts have been very busy and I really do appreciate you taking the time to visit me. I also know that many of you are spending the day with family and friends today and won't be on the computer. This I truly understand. I hope you are all enjoying this very special day

Let Every Day Be Christmas

Christmas is forever, not for just one day,
for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away
like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf.
The good you do for others is good you do yourself.
Peace on Earth, good will to men,
kind thoughts and words of cheer,
are things we should use often
and not just once a year.
Remember too the Christ-child, grew up to be a man;
to hide him in a cradle, is not our dear Lord's plan.
So keep the Christmas spirit, share it with others far and near,
from week to week and month to month, throughout the entire year!

Let Christmas not become a thing
Merely of merchant's trafficking,
Of tinsel, bell and holly wreath
And surface pleasure, but beneath
The childish glamour, let us find
Nourishment for soul and mind.
Let us follow kinder ways
Through our teeming human maze,
And help the age of peace to come
From a Dreamer's martyrdom.
~Madeline Morse

May you have the gladness of Christmas which is hope;

At the stroke of midnight on Christmas Eve, all cats–indeed, all animals–are supposed to be able to speak so that humans can understand them and wonderful conversations can take place. This is the old tale that my mother told me when I was a child. I listened with wide-eyed wonder. And I always tried to stay awake in order to hear this happen and participate in the holiday magic. Unfortunately, my eyelids grew heavy; only in dreams did I watch kitties dance around the Christmas tree, happily chattering away about the joys of the season and the grand things that would be in their stockings and packages.
I would then ask my mother, “So, what do kitties ask for; what do they wish for most?”
“Peace on earth– and kind people who have respect for cats and all creatures,” she would say.
That wish was important then and it’s just as important today
After cats and animals the world over dance and talk with Santa; after they pay their respects to the reindeer and wave goodbye for another year, the ability to converse with humans disappears. Tired from partying and playing and talking, the furry ones curl up to snooze and do their own holiday dreaming.
“That’s why our kitties are always asleep on Christmas Day,” my mother said. “There was so much going on the night before.”
* * Instead of being a time of unusual behavior, Christmas is perhaps the only time in the year when people can obey their natural impulses and express their true sentiments without feeling self-conscious and, perhaps, foolish. Christmas, in short, is about the only chance a man has to be himself.

What is the Meaning of the Christmas Wreath?
The term "Wreath", curiously enough, is linked to our word "Wrist", with both terms forming a continuous physical circular shape. It also came from Middle English's "wrethe", meaning a twisted band or ring of leaves or flowers in a garland.
Wreaths have been used symbolically for centuries. The circle or ring shape is symbolic of eternity or eternal life, because the shape has no beginning or end. Back in ancient Rome, this symbol became so powerful that people used decorative wreaths as a sign of victory. Some believe that this is where the hanging of wreaths on doors came from.
Putting plants into the symbolic circular shape symbolizes the strength of life overcoming the forces of winter. Wreaths and other decorations during long winters often consisted of whatever natural materials looked attractive at this bleak time of year. People used candles, fires, evergreens, hollies, berries, and forced blossoms to hold on to the promise of spring.
A Brief History of Holly and the Christmas Wreath
The ancient Druids are the first society in known history to have worn sprigs of holly and mistletoe. These priests of yesteryear believed that holly, with its glossy, shiny prickly leaves of green adorned with red berries, remained green all year due to their magical properties. The Druids considered Holly sacred. Many speculate the holly berries have given us our green and red colors of Christmas.

THE STORY OF THE CHRISTMAS ROBIN
The Christmas night was extremely cold and a cold breeze blew constantly into the stable where Mother Mary lay with her infant, Jesus. The fire in the stable, the only source of heat for the baby, was about to go off and all that Mary could do was call the surrounding animals for help. She asked the sleeping ox, lazy donkey, horse and the sheep, but they were either of no use or just refused to help. Suddenly, Mary heard the flapping sound of wings. A robin had heard Mother Mary's cry for help and had flown to the stable to help her out. The robin flapped his wings hard at the dying embers of fire until the fire was rekindled and became bright red. He fanned continuously, flapping hard so that the fire never went out and kept the baby warm. To ensure that the fire stayed alive, the robin used his beak and dropped some dry sticks in the fire. This caused the fire to rise abruptly and it burnt the breast of the bird. Despite the burns that he received, the bird didn't bother and continued fanning so that the infant could be kept warm for long enough to sleep comfortably. Mother Mary heartily thanked the robin for his efforts and tenderly looked at his breast that was now red with the burns and blessing him for his deed of valor and selflessness.

THE ORIGIN OF SANTAS REINDEER
Santa's reindeer come to mind as soon as you start to think about Christmas. We've all heard the legend about Santa flying around the world to deliver toys in his sleigh pulled by eight reindeer, but they weren't always part of the Christmas celebrations.
As Christmas legends go, the story of the sleigh with Santa's reindeer is very new. For many centuries there have been stories about a kind old man delivering gifts to children all over the world, whether he's known as St. Nicholas, Sinterklaas, Father Christmas, Santa or any of his other aliases. Stories of the mysterious and generous old fellow have been around since the fourth century. But it wasn't until the 19th century that the eight famous reindeer entered the Christmas scene. Prior to that, Santa traveled on a white horse in Europe and a donkey in South America. It is believed that Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzer first appeared in 1823, in the poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas," commonly known as "The Night Before Christmas," by Clement C. Moore. It didn't take long for them to become an essential part of holiday lore. It soon became common for artists to depict Santa with reindeer. Santa's sleigh full of toys being pulled across the sky by the team of reindeer has become an iconic holiday image. The Reindeer driven by Santa Claus are the only known flying Reindeer in existence, believed to have been endowed with the power of flight by virtue of magic corn given to Kris Kringle by a great and wonderful wizard. Through this magic corn, the strength of the Reindeer is increased threefold, their stamina increased to infinity and their hooves can manipulate the air as though it were solid ground. Thus, a complement of nine Reindeer would be able to pull a sleigh brimming with 13,500 pounds of toys for an unlimited amount of time. Santa's Newest Friend
But what of Rudolph, the most famous reindeer of all? Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer, was created in 1939 by Robert May, an employee of Mongomery Ward. The department store wanted to create a free giveaway book for children as a promotion. May wrote the story in rhyme for the book, which was a big hit with Montgomery Ward's customers.

THE YULE CAT
The oldest written sources on the Yule Cat are from the Nineteenth Century. These refer to the fact that those who do not get a new item of clothing for Yule are destined to become offerings for the Yule Cat. It may sound strange that the deprived ones will also become the sacrifices, but this tradition is based on the fact that every effort was made to finish all work with the Autumn wool before Yule. The reward for those who took part in the work was a new piece of clothing. Those who were lazy received nothing. Thus the Yule Cat was used as an incentive to get people to work harder.
A woman describes a scene from her youth in the last century thus: "We were lazy doing this chore. Then we were reminded of the Yule Cat. We thought that was some terrible beast and the last thing we wanted was to be one of his offers".
* * * * * * * * * * * * * *
"Yule, is when the dark half of the year relinquishes to the light half. Starting the next morning at sunrise, the sun climbs just a little higher and stays a little longer in the sky each day. Known as Solstice Night, or the longest night of the year, much celebration was to be had as the ancestors awaited the rebirth of the Oak King, the Sun King, the Giver of Life that warmed the frozen Earth and made her to bear forth from seeds protected through the fall and winter in her womb. Bonfires were lit in the fields, and crops and trees were "wassailed" with toasts of spiced cider."

Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.

KWANZAA
The year 2012 will see the 46th annual Kwanzaa, the African American holiday celebrated from December 26 to January 1. It is estimated that some 18 million African Americans take part in Kwanzaa.
Kwanzaa is not a religious holiday, nor is it meant to replace Christmas. It was created by Dr. Maulana "Ron" Karenga, a professor of Black Studies, in 1966. At this time of great social change for African Americans, Karenga sought to design a celebration that would honor the values of ancient African cultures and inspire African Americans who were working for progress.
Kwanzaa is based on the year-end harvest festivals that have taken place throughout Africa for thousands of years. The name comes from the Swahili phrase "matunda ya kwanza," which means "first fruits of the harvest." Karenga chose a phrase from Swahili because the language is used by various peoples throughout Africa.
The Seven Principles (Nguzo Saba)
Each of the seven days of Kwanzaa honors a different principle. These principles are believed to have been key to building strong, productive families and communities in Africa. During Kwanzaa, celebrants greet each other with "Habari gani," or "What's the news?" The principles of Kwanzaa form the answers

The origin of Santa Claus begins in the 4th century with Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, an area in present day Turkey. By all accounts St. Nicholas was a generous man, particularly devoted to children. After his death around 340 A.D. he was buried in Myra, but in 1087 Italian sailors purportedly stole his remains and removed them to Bari, Italy, greatly increasing St. Nicholas' popularity throughout Europe.
His kindness and reputation for generosity gave rise to claims he that he could perform miracles and devotion to him increased. St. Nicholas became the patron saint of Russia, where he was known by his red cape, flowing white beard, and bishop's mitre.
In Greece, he is the patron saint of sailors, in France he was the patron of lawyers, and in Belgium the patron of children and travellers. Thousands of churches across Europe were dedicated to him and some time around the 12th century an official church holiday was created in his honor. The Feast of St. Nicholas was celebrated December 6 and the day was marked by gift-giving and charity.

The Nutcracker Ballet
Mom has missed her furfriends during these past two weeks.

On December 17, 1892, The Nutcracker ballet premiered in St. Petersburg, Russia. Critics and audience thought it a failure; it was not an instant success.
The adaptation by Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870) was based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffman (1776-1822).
The score was composed by Peter Tchaikovsky, commissioned by mastermind choreographer Marius Petipa. Tchaikovsky died less than a year later.
The ballet was first performed in the United States in 1944. The Nutcracker has become a classic — many people consider it the most popular ballet in the world.
.......................*****.....................
Mom simply loved seeing her niece's ballet performances for all those special ten Decembers, meow-arvelous and magical memories to remember. Our adorable Sarah played different characters, beginning as a mouse, followed by a flower, a plum fairy and other dancers with enormous grace. How fast time goes, like a blink of an eye.

HI ANGEL POOKY & PAUL
I hope you all got a little rest this weekend. It's Monday again. Thank you for stopping by to leave me a vote and your comments. A lot of you like the ginger bread houses it seemed. I'm glad. I'm glad you seem to be enjoying this month with me. I am very grateful to have you all as furends. My moms aunt collects Kachina dolls, other old Native American items and books. I looked to see what the wise, peaceful Hopi did this month. I hope your Monday starts out the week gently for all of you.

Soyal is the winter solstice ceremony of the Hopitu Shinumu, The Peaceful Ones, also known as the Hopi Indians. It is held on December 21, the shortest day of the year. The main purpose of the ritual is to ceremonially bring the sun back from its long winter slumber. It also marks the beginning of another cycle of the Wheel of the Year, and is a time for purification. Pahos, prayer sticks, are made prior to the Soyal ceremony, to bless all the community, including their homes, animals, and plants. The sacred underground ritual chambers, called kivas, are ritually opened to mark the beginning of the Kachina season.
Soyal is a 16 day ceremonial period, practiced by the Hopi for generations, that is supposed to establish the mood for the coming year. All major Hopi ceremonies last 16 days. Other ceremonies may last 9 days. Like other ceremonies, Soyal begins with an expression of assurance that the ceremony will accomplish its purpose, and end with a feast of celebration and a public Kachina dance. The dance acknowledges the success of the ritual and shares its blessings with the other members of the village.
As we follow what the Traditionalists have done for all of their years, we come immediately to attitudes and feelings. "Soyal time," the Elders say, "is a good time to teach children to respect others, so they will continue to practice it throughout their lives."
"There must be no disturbing loud behavior or running during Soyal." Because loud behavior is self-centered. It interrupts others, and it disturbs the deities who are involved in the cycle as well.

In the song "Winter Wonderland"; " In the meadow we can build a snowman. then pretend that he is Parson Brown", Parson Brown is actually someone who is a parson, with the last name Brown. A parson was simply a protestant minister who traveled around various small towns and would perform wedding ceremonies for people who lacked a protestant minister. Hence the next lyrics: "He'll say are you married, we'll say no man, but you can do the job while you're in town". The song was written by Dick Smith who was residing in a West Mountain Sanitarium, due to having contracted tuberculosis. Nowhere in the song is Christmas mentioned, the song is just about playing in deep snow.

Jingle Bells was originally called " One Horse Open Sleigh" and was written by James Pierpont sometime between 1853 and 1857. At the time,Pierpont was working as an organist and music director in Savannah, Ga. Pierpont was hired on by his brother, John Pierpont Jr, was the Reverand there, after James' business burned down. It was here he composed "One Horse Open Sleigh", reportedly for a Thanksgiving program. He later publicly released the song through Ditson and Co. of Boston in 1859 under the new title "Jingle Bells", with it flopping. However, from there, it did slowly gain popularity and became associated with Christmas, rather than just a general sleigh song. By 1890, three years before Pierponts death, the song became a huge Christmas hit and from 1890 to 1954 it managed to maintain a spot on the top 25 most recorded songs in the world.

Gingerbread Houses

The gingerbread house became popular in Germany after the Brothers Grimm published their fariy tale collection which included "Hansel and Gretel" in the 19th century. Early German settlers brought this lebkuchenhaeusle - gingerbread house - tradition to the Americas.
Gingerbread houses never caught on in Britain as they did in North America, where some extraordinary examples can be found. But they do exist in other parts of Europe.
In December 2001, bakers in Torun, Poland, attempted to beat the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest-ever gingerbread house. It was made in Szczecin, Poland, with 4,000 loaves of brick-shaped gingerbread measuring 11 1/2 feet high. It took a week to create and used 6,000 eggs, a ton of flour, and 550 pounds of shortening. Alas, they lost to an American team! * * * *

I see a command module and eight smaller modules in front. The piolt of the command module is wearing a red suit . . . . " The two then proceded to sing the first broadcast ( from space ), Jingle Bells, with harmonica and bells accompanying, both of which they had smuggled aboard

Christmas Angels
by P.Z. Mann
The Whittles lived in Humbleburg,
As poor as poor can be,
But all their neighbors loved them,
For their generosity.
For though the Whittles' shelves were bare,
Their cottage tumbledown,
When Christmas came they made a toy,
For every child in town.
One Christmas Eve they climbed in bed,
After all the toys were made;
And while they dreamed of better times,
The Whittles were repaid.
That night three Christmas angels came,
To give them a reward --
For heaven won't let any act
Of kindness be ignored.
One angel searched the cupboard
And found just a crust of bread;
"Now, this won't do", she whispered,
"Let's prepare a feast instead!"
The angels flapped their magic wings,
As only they are able,
And in a flash a flood of food
Filled all the shelves and table!
The angels flapped their magic wings,
As only they are able,
And in a flash a flood of food
Filled all the shelves and table!
The angels flapped their magic wings,
As only they are able,
And in a flash a flood of food
Filled all the shelves and table!
Outside, the angels dressed the house
With icicles and snow,
And on the door they placed a wreath,
Complete with a bright red bow!
They finished all they came to do,
Before the break of day,
And as the Whittles roused from sleep,
The angels flew away.
Outside, the angels dressed the house
With icicles and snow,
And on the door they placed a wreath,
Complete with a bright red bow!
They finished all they came to do,
Before the break of day,
And as the Whittles roused from sleep,
The angels flew away.
Now, when the Whittles saw the food
And all the decoration,
They pinched themselves and wept for joy,
Then danced in celebration!
The Whittles shared their Christmas feast-
They emptied all the shelves;
Their kindness wouldn't let them keep
Good fortune to themselves.
When everyone had cleaned their plate,
They all joined in a song;
And up above-though no one heard-
The angels sang along!

As always, I thank you for your visits, votes and your kind comments. I'm sorry I had to vote, leave blog and run with most of you yesterday. I hope I have more time today. I should. I wish I had known yesterday was National Poinsettia Day, I would have used this story. I hope you all have a terrific Thursday.
* * * * * * * *
THE MIRACLE OF THE POINSETTIA
At Christmas in Mexico, most houses display the Poinsettia. Just as we have Holly, Misletoe and the Christmas Tree, the Mexicans have the poinsettia. They believe that the beautiful plant brings a blessing that will last all year. The tradition has existed since 1834 when a miracle occurred in a tiny village.
In those days it was customary for people in the villages to take gifts to the Baby Jesus at Christmas Eve. Little Maria, a poor peasant girl had no gift, but she did so want to enter the church and see the Baby Jesus in His crib. She stood outside, watching others as they entered, carrying their gifts. Some took food, some took crochet and lacework. Others carried flowers. But little Maria had nothing. One lady passed her with a huge bundle of flowers in her arms. As she walked by, a leaf fell from the enormous bunch and landed at Maria’s feet. She picked it up and thought, “I will take this leaf”.
Others saw Maria pick up the leaf and smiled as she carefully wrapped it in her small handkerchief. And then, clutching her tiny gift, Maria entered the church. She took her place at the end of the line of people waiting to make their offerings. Then at last, it was Maria’s turn. She stretched out her arm and carefully opened her fingers to place the leaf on the altar in front of the crib.
There was a gasp from the adults who had seen Maria fold the leaf into her tiny handkerchief. For as her fingers separated, it was seen that the little peasant girl was now holding a beautiful flower. The miraculous bloom was formed like a star with brilliant scarlet leaves.
Word of the miracle spread quickly through the church and people fell to their knees. The gift of the Poinsettia came to be known as “The Flower of the Holy Night”.

Today I thought we would take a look at one of the kind of silly, kind of romantic traditions humans have done for many, many years.
The name for Mistletoe comes from the fact that mistletoe tends to spring from bird droppings that have fallen on trees. with seeds that have passed through the digestive tract of the birds. At the time the plant was given this name. the people didn't know anything about that, but had observed that mistletoe seemed to spring into existence from bird droppings on trees. thus "mistle" or "missel", which ment basically "dung" and"toe", which came from the Anglo-Saxon "tan" meaning "twig". hence, mistletoe is another way to say "poop twig". Not only is mistletoe a poop twig, but but most varieties are partial parasites, being unable to sustain themselves on their own photosynthesis, so they leach what they need from the particular tree they are growing on, So essentially, the mistletoe tradition is a tradition of kissing under a parasidic poop twig.
Please remember that while having fun nuzzling with loved ones UNDER the mistletoe DO NOT play with it or eat it. You could make yourself very sick and not be able to enjoy the rest of the Holidays.
* * * "Those who make compassion an essential part of their lives find the joy of life. Kindness deepens the spirit and produces rewards that cannot be completely explained in words. It is an experience more powerful than words. To become acquainted with kindness one must be prepared to learn new things and feel new feelings. Kindness is more than a philosophy of the mind. It is a philosophy of the spirit.

During my second year of nursing school our professor gave us a quiz. I breezed through the questions until I read the last one: "What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?" Surely this was a joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Before the class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our grade. "Absolutely," the professor said. "In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say hello." I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy. ~Joann C. Jones

CAT TOY BELLS

Dashing through the house,
And Jumping high and low,
We chase a cat nip mouse,
As fast as we can go.

The mouse is old and worn,
And we bit off it`s tail,
What fun to rip the stuffing out,
And leave a catnip trail!

Chorus:
Oh, cat toy bells, cat toy bells,
Ringing loud and clear,
Oh, what fun, to play and pounce
When Christmas time is here!

I found a fuzzy ball,
That jingled when it bounced,
I rolled it down the hall,
And when it stopped I pounced.

The ball stayed where it lay,
I`d tired it out at last,
And then it tried to get away,
But I was much too fast!

Chorus:
Oh, cat toy bells, cat toy bells,
Ringing loud and clear.
Oh, what fun to play and pounce,
When Christmas time is near!
