First- and second-class passengers submitted to a brief shipboard inspection and then disembarked at the piers in New York or New Jersey.
Third class passengers underwent medical and legal inspections at Ellis Island.
On NOVEMBER 12, 1954, Ellis Island closed after processing more than 20 million immigrants.
An estimated 40 percent of all Americans can trace their roots through Ellis Island.

WORLD WAR I: Ellis Island was used as a detention center for suspected enemies and as a deportation center for illegal immigrants.
CONGRESS passed quota laws: the Immigration Act of 1924.
WORLD WAR II: It was a hospital for wounded soldiers and a Coast Guard training center.
In 1965, Lyndon Johnson removed quotas through the Hart-Cellar Act. The Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965 quadrupled Asian immigration.

Hi Pearl
I am glad to report that dad is his old self again. We've gotten several new additions since I last talked to you. Six kittens left in a cardboard box under our street light (Dad calls them his saturday night six pack)They were so eaten up with fleas that their eyes were swollen shut. One is at the vets right now and may have to have a damaged eye removed. The others are doing pretty good thanks to keeping PediaLite on hand for emergencies. In the upper cage, Hampton is waiting his turn to be fixed; Cupcake will probably go at the same time; Dolly and Tommy Tucker (littermates) will have to wait till they get a little older. Some ill-advised relatives tried to throw a wrench in Mom & Dad's caring for us, but Dad outsmarted them! I guess when dad says we've found a safe and loving home he really meant it. Pearl, you are drop-dead gorgeous! You look like a Ragdoll to me, more than a Persian. And a Harley kitty - my dad would love you. He had a Harley when he and mom met but sold it when he outgrew his single, Harley buddies.
I was born in Huntsville, AL and my mom has passed through Mobile a few times. I would imagine you get pretty uncomfortable in the summertime with that long, beautiful coat.
