America's first federal immigration center: 1892-1954
PEAK IMMIGRATION YEARS: between 1892 and 1924
% DENIED ADMITTANCE INTO THE US: 2%
First- and second-class passengers submitted to a brief shipboard inspection and then disembarked at the piers in New York or New Jersey.
Third class passengers underwent medical and legal inspections at Ellis Island.
On NOVEMBER 12, 1954, Ellis Island closed after processing more than 20 million immigrants.
An estimated 40 percent of all Americans can trace their roots through Ellis Island.

WORLD WAR I: Ellis Island was used as a detention center for suspected enemies and as a deportation center for illegal immigrants.
CONGRESS passed quota laws: the Immigration Act of 1924.
WORLD WAR II: It was a hospital for wounded soldiers and a Coast Guard training center.
In 1965, Lyndon Johnson removed quotas through the Hart-Cellar Act. The Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965 quadrupled Asian immigration.

Hi Treasure,
Welcome to CC from another Bengal. I weigh 13 pounds and you look much larger than me. How much do you weigh. I have been on CC for over a year now and enjoy it very much. Got the first 6 years of my life I live in a motor home with my pawrents. We travel on the west coast. Now we live in a 3rd floor apartment in a senior complex. Hey everyone Treasure here! Nice to meet everyone! I am a purebred bengal (mom sometimes says I have all good looks and no brains because I am what you would call clumzy) I only get supervised outdoor time only which I don't mind because I have the most fun when I know mom is watching me perform.
