1/8/13 Happy Tuesday!
Barney here again and I have made it through my first Catpaign week, with only one disaster--- today I was a good paragraph into my blog and mom accidentally did something and the whole thing disappeared! AAarrrgggh!!! Then she did something else and there was no going back! Oh well... Maybe we should let her get a bit more sleep.
Today we were all set to discuss the topic of kitty nutrition and mom turned the news on and there appeared a story about a cat named Holly, who was lost in Daytona, FL and showed 62 days later within blocks of her home in W. Palm Beach, FL, 190 miles away! Luckily she was microchipped and the kind folks, who found her, brought her to a vet and her family was found. Her feet were raw and she had lost weight, but she was OK and she is home. A truly amazing and inspiring story. Humans still don't know how cats actually do these things, traveling home over long distances, without the aid of maps or compasses. Something to take away from this story is that ID's are important, even for indoor kitties. This was an indoor kitty, but traveling with her family in a mobile home at the Daytona Speedway. Her family thinks she was frightened by fireworks and somehow got out of the home. They stayed for several days searching for her, putting up flyers, and checking with local authorities. Finally they had to leave, feeling sure their kitty was gone forever. So glad that wasn't the end to the story.
We are all microchipped and also have collars with tags. The microchhip is under our skin in the shoulder area and has an ID#, which rescues and vets can read with a scanner. Technology has improved since the early days, when different chips needed different scanners, and rescues or shelters can often get free scanners from the companies, if they chip animals in their adoption programs. If you do have a chip, it is important that pawrents update info such as phone and address changes. A collar tag with phone #s is also a good idea, but for cats, make sure it is a breakaway collar, so we don't choke, if we get caught on something. Having extra collars with tags on hand is always a good idea. Hi Mystic!
Guess what happened to me today. Mom gave me a bath! I imagine most cats are, but I'm terrified of water. So mom made me wear a harness and leash to stay in the bathtub. Vote Tiger #221788 for COTD on 6/30!
Tiger #221788 is quite a unique cat; she is usually grumpy on the outside, (which seems to be the only trait she picked up from her mother!) but on the inside she can be sweet and loving. Tiger’s mother was a pregnant stray, looking for a safe place to have her kittens. She soon came upon my Aunts barn, where she gave birth to four kittens, on April 25th. Tiger was kind of the outsider in her family, her siblings were grey, black and calico, her mother was also calico, and Tiger on the other hand was a stunning bright peach. When Tiger’s mother brought in dead birds and mice, Tiger’s siblings would play with it, but Tiger wouldn’t touch it, she would rather play with us. We soon fell in love with Tiger and brought her home on Father’s Day June 17th. Tiger’s bright peach coat turned to a stunning rusty brown, and is continuing to change.
Tiger is now six years old, and never ceases to amaze us with her many sudden burst of energy. Tiger enjoys basking in the sunlight, playing in the corn field, chasing butterflies, and stalking birds. Tiger comes from a long line of tough strays and farm cats, but Tiger doesn’t seem to carry any of those any of those traits! Tiger wakes me up every morning around 7:00AM so I can give her treats; Tiger only has two treats a day because of her corn allergies. And if she isn’t doing any of the above, then she is sleeping.

This handsome Maine Coon kitty was waiting patiently at the shelter for a special someone to come and make him part of a loving family. On December 9th, 2011 his patience paid off, for indeed a very special lady did come in to meet him and it was love at first sight.
At first Dasher’s #225951 family named him “Kringle” since it was so close to Christmas when they adopted him and they thought that name was fitting for this fine fellow. But soon Dasher let his mommy and daddy know what his true name was and that was “Dasher” #225951 as he dashed from one end of the house to the other, full of energy and happiness at being in his forever home. Dasher soon found a companion in his sister, Sparkles K., even though she wasn’t too thrilled to have a new baby brother enter her world. But after a few weeks Dasher #225951 and his sister became friends and have been keeping their parents entertained and loved ever since. Dasher has learned the ways of his sister and they both love to chase after hair ties shot out from their mom’s hand. Dasher loves to watch birds and other creatures from the many windows of his loving home. When it is time for bed and sleep, Dasher #225951 is under the covers right up next to his mommy all night long.

Mom Kat had just tended to Little Leo, Jesse, Kissy Cat, Queen Millie, Mai Lin, Anna Banana, Sasha, Mystic May, and the family dogs. She stepped out on her porch for a calming moment and happened to glance over in the neighbor's yard. Peeking out from under their car were two tiny little kitten heads! Mom Kat groaned out loud. More babies, unwanted and neglected by their pitiful looks. Mom Kat went to them, picked them up and carried them into her house.
She could not keep them could she? She didn't see how she could. She had said when she took in Little Leo that he was The Last One! While she was trying to place them in new homes, she got them made healthy at the Vet's, named them, and socialized them. And all the while, the little solid black kitten, who was given the name Jack Sparrow, began weaving his magic spell on his new Mom and Dad! Finally the day came when his new parents realized they could not release Jack Sparrow or his litter ate. They became permanent members of the MI Zoo Crew family!
