KNEADING: Your cat is reverting back to kittenhood, with this rhythmic action of the paws functioned to stimulate her mother's milk flow when she was nursing.
It's a warm, endearing attempt to recapture the security she enjoyed in the nest before being cast out into the World.
So far, so good. But sometimes she chooses a part of your exposed skin to help her take this comforting trip down memory lane. And she often gets carried away and lets her claws protrude ever so slightly. It rarely feels more intense than a pin-prick, but it can be sharp enough to make you involuntarily shove her away.
Although you meant her no harm, Kitty is likely to interpret your behavior as a profound act of rejection and end up with hurt feelings. If this happens, find a way to reassure her immediately that you love her every bit as much as her mama did.
