1/10/13 Thursday is Here! Barney is Here!
And mom is up by 4:00AM! Feeling a lot better than last night, when the arthritis in her left knee was really acting up.

Well, back to the story of Tyler. We do hope you got to read the first part of the story on the CMR or our Inspiration page #249417. We apologize for not completing page deliveries, but mom was not able to sit comfortably after she got home last night. You will remember that Tyler was suffering from malnutrition due to growing up on a diet of fried chicken, which he surely did not object to. He almost died and his owner, not cruel, but totally ignorant called mom looking for help.

Anyway, after the vet and mom got his strength back, mom discovered he had extremely aggressive behavior issues, partly due to the malnutrition and poor eyesight, part due to the fact that he was not used to living with other animals and may have been played with roughly as a kitten. He was neutered. The vet ended up suggesting a direct approach, which worked rather remarkably. She gave mom a very bitter tasting bandage spray to spray her clothes in and told her to be well covered by thick sweats and then approach Tyler as usual. At this time he had to stay in the spare room, because he would attack the other cats and dogs. The bandage spray had little scent. Mom went to Tyler and approached him normally. He actually looked forward to mom coming, but was fearful of her leaving and that was when he attacked! That day he hit her legs full force with tooth and claw! And stopped--- foamed at the mouth and totally backed off! Mom ignored the behavior and left. Later she returned and proceeded to talk to him and play with a wand toy and then leave again. She did this many times that day and for days to come. Tyler never attached her again. A few times he appeared to become fearful and think of it, but he backed off and gradually the behavior disappeared totally.

The time came to find Tyler a good forever home. He did not do well with the other cats and dogs and could not be brought to adoption events for that reason. It so happened mom was talking to a neighbor/friend. Her friend was a vet tech and studying for work in animal control. She visited Tyler and decided to try working with him. Since she only lived a couple houses away, mom could visit anytime. In a very short time Tyler bonded with her and her husband and became their fur-child. They changed his name to Toby. Eventually got 2 dogs and another cat and Toby, no longer a terror, lived well into his teens, in spite of his very rough start.

It's a wonderful life
Philip Van Doren Stern (1900-1984) began a short story, The Greatest Gift", in 1939. He was inspired by a dream, and reminiscent of the 1843 Charles Dickens' Christmas Carol. Stern shared 200 printed copies in 1943 with friends as a year-end cards after numerous publisher rejections.
Luckily, the pamphlet came to the attention of a RKO movie producer who purchased the rights. Frank Capra's production company saw the movie potential. He paid $10,000 for the rights in 1945. Stern's story was adapted into the most loved and memorable American family film, "It's a Wonderful Life" in 1946. Director Capra's inventiveness, humor and affection for human beings keep it glowing with life and excitement.
On Xmas eve, George Bailey's guardian angel shows him all the lives he touched and how different life in his community would be had he never been born. Although George repeatedly sacrifices his dream to travel the world, he realizes "No man is a failure who has friends."
My dear friends at CatChannel, each one of you is precious, charming and kind. We make every attempt to make all members feel welcomed. You have the generous spirit of George Bailey in your hearts. You make our community a wonderful place. Thank you for being our friends.

The lead video of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is riveting. The song, released in 1970, remains current.

"Immigrant Song" by Led Zeppelin
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying:
Valhalla, I am coming!

On we sweep with threshing oar,
Our only goal will be the western shore.

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
How soft your fields so green, can whisper tales of gore,
Of how we calmed the tides of war. We are your overlords.

On we sweep with threshing oar,
Our only goal will be the western shore.

So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins,
For peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing.

Vote Tiger #221788 for COTD on 6/30!
Tiger #221788 is quite a unique cat; she is usually grumpy on the outside, (which seems to be the only trait she picked up from her mother!) but on the inside she can be sweet and loving. Tiger’s mother was a pregnant stray, looking for a safe place to have her kittens. She soon came upon my Aunts barn, where she gave birth to four kittens, on April 25th. Tiger was kind of the outsider in her family, her siblings were grey, black and calico, her mother was also calico, and Tiger on the other hand was a stunning bright peach. When Tiger’s mother brought in dead birds and mice, Tiger’s siblings would play with it, but Tiger wouldn’t touch it, she would rather play with us. We soon fell in love with Tiger and brought her home on Father’s Day June 17th. Tiger’s bright peach coat turned to a stunning rusty brown, and is continuing to change.
Tiger is now six years old, and never ceases to amaze us with her many sudden burst of energy. Tiger enjoys basking in the sunlight, playing in the corn field, chasing butterflies, and stalking birds. Tiger comes from a long line of tough strays and farm cats, but Tiger doesn’t seem to carry any of those any of those traits! Tiger wakes me up every morning around 7:00AM so I can give her treats; Tiger only has two treats a day because of her corn allergies. And if she isn’t doing any of the above, then she is sleeping.
Please visit Tiger #221788 and leave her a vote today; June 30th so she can get her very own badge on Sunday!

Hi Mika,
How are you doing tonight? It has been a long while since I have visited again. It seems like Mom is always busy. Thankfully she found some time for me to visit with my friends. I will be sure to give her extra purrs tonight. The month of May sure has flown by. There has been planting of the flowers and vegetable garden, opening the pool, putting the boat in the water, cleaning inside and out and of course, Mother's Day and Memorial Day. Whew, what a time. Hehehe.!!! But, my sisters and I still have spent a lot of time in the yard, chasing, birds, hummingbirds, toads, butterflies and every flying insect imaginable. And, really enjoying the warm and fresh air. Now it is on to June and hopefully more of the same fun times. Now, if I can only get Mom to keep up with my visits to my friends. I am keeping my paws crossed. Have a great evening. Purrs and a hug, Mittens...

Come visit me, Mittens. April showers bring May flowers.., Q. Angel Misty. Thank-you for my ACOTD Badge., Minuette. Thank-you for my COTD Badge.., Greycee Mist. I love Spring... & Gypsy. Happy Spring....

"Mikey's Meow-velous Mothers" - May 31
Some of my stories have had beginnings that were difficult reading, because so many of them seem to start with the actions of ignorant and cruel people. There are so many of their kind in the world that it must sometimes feel overwhelming to those amazing humans in the front lines, who see the damage left behind and do their best to minimize it. So for all our caring Moms and Dads, today I want to close out my campaign by reminding you of a story you probably all know but can always stand to hear again. It is adapted from The Star Thrower by Loren Eiseley (1907-1977):

Once upon a time, there was a wise man who had a habit of walking on the beach. One day, he looked down the beach and saw a young man, reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.

He came closer and called out "Good morning! May I ask what you are doing?"

The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean."

"Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the somewhat startled wise man.

The young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die."

Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, "But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!"

At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, "It made a difference for that one."

And isn’t that really what the spirit of Motherhood is all about? So to all our Moms, female and male, human & fur of all species, on behalf of the kitties for whom THEY have made a difference, let’s send our loudest purrs of Thank You!

And thank YOU so much, kitties, for your support during my campaign. Humbly – Mike.

Zen ... Tranquility ... Peace ... Simplicity
A Zen master once proclaimed:
...Lightening flashes, sparks fly!
...In one blink of the eye, have missed seeing.

•Zen is more of an attitude than a belief.
•Zen means being in the flow of the universe.
•Zen is the peace that comes from being one with an entity other than yourself.
•Zen means being aware of your harmonious oneness with the world & everything in it.
•Zen means living fully & authentically in the present; each moment filled with profound peace & clarity.
•Zen means achieving calm & emptying the mind of distractions; delighting in the basic miracle of life itself.
•Zen means being free of the distractions and illusory conflicts of the material world.
“When is Zen?” ... “Now!”

"Mikey's Meow-velous Mothers" - May 29
Today we want to say “Thank You” to those animal rescue humans who are in the background, but who make so many kitties’ lives better for having known them. I’m talking about those humans who take foster kitties into their homes. Without these special humans, the shelters would be more overcrowded than they already often are, and kittens born in the shelters would have a hard time adjusting to life outside of a cage when they managed to find forever homes. Many, many of our CC Moms and Dads do this important job, or have done it in the past. We can’t possibly name them all, so we’ve picked out just a few to represent them.

Let’s start with ANGEL DUSTY #54460. He met his Mom when she, as a prospective adopter, came to visit the foster home he was living in as a kitten. Well, she not only went home with a kitty with whom she would share a special bond, she was so impressed with what she saw of how the rescue organization ran things that she became a foster Mom, too. Look at Angel Dusty up there at the Bridge, he is absolutely beaming to know that he was the start of his Mom welcoming over 150 cats and kittens into their home over the years! One of these was ANGEL TUFFY #54796, who came as a foster and became a family member.

ANGEL LACY #75646’s Mom was also a foster person when they met. Soon everyone realized that Angel Lacy tended to bite when afraid, so her foster Mom became her forever Mom.

QUINCY #180493 is another case of “foster failure”. She was terrified of everything and had lived under a bed for five years. In the shelter she continued to hide, so they thought a foster home would help her get over her fears. Soon she and her foster Mom had formed a special bond and Quincy got to stay.

Stories like these are everywhere, and I know I have barely scratched the surface of the wonderful experiences our friends here could share. If YOU have a kitty foster human in your life, make sure you go give them lots of purrs and headbonks today, because they are pretty special.

A NEW MEOW-VELOUS MOTHER: Not long ago MILO #160427 brought a friend home. Last night this new adopted sister, PRINCESS gave birth to 6 beautiful new kittens, and Milo is right there trying to help out!!

Yesterday we met two Thomases, today let me introduce you to two Angels. One is black, one is white, one is a friend from CC and the other we have only met thorough the Animal Rescue Site. Each of them found that special person to be an Angel to them!

Angel #1: ANGEL BOOBOO #216193 was just a tiny little kitten, four weeks old, when she crossed paths with some very mean and uncaring children who tossed her in the air, poked her and then left her for dead. Luckily, along came a kind man who was amazed to find the little bundle still alive. He gathered her up, took her home, and cleaned her up. He and his wife tried to nurse her back to health, and it looked like she was going to recover. She started to put on weight, purr, and to enjoy cuddling and climbing on her new human friends. But a long life together was not to be, and after only two weeks in her loving new home Angel BooBoo crossed the Rainbow Bridge in the arms of her loving human “Angel”.

Angel # 2: One day a woman was walking along the sidewalk and noticed a little white kitten following her. She picked it up and took it back to the house it seemed to belong to, where there were a few other little white kittens in the yard. As she walked away, she noticed the kitten following her again. After bringing the little furrball back home for the fourth time, she knocked on the door and tried to hand the persistent kitten to the woman who answered. To her shock, she was told she might as well take the kitten home, because they had plans to drown the unwanted litter!

Well, she did not have to be told twice. She took the little kitten home and called the SPCA to rescue the others. The little white kitten was given the name ANGEL not only because of his colour, but because he brought help to his brothers and sisters and enabled them all to find forever homes.

Please, forgive us for taking long to write back to you. Mom hurt her arm while she was moving some furnitures last weekend ´n she had to keep herself off the PC for a while. We missed you.
My parents are traveling to Salta next Thursday. They will be staying there for one week.
We´re having lots of Mom´s time today. We watched The Aristocats on TV with her. That´s one of her favourite films ever. Sally and I enjoyed it as well.
Mom´s arm is better although she´s still having her pain medicines.
I was at Mommy´s bedroom this morning, sniffing here and there when I found a small treasure: Catnip!! Can you believe it? My mischievous Mom was hiding it from me!! (MOL!) It was inside of one of the boxes waiting to be unpacked but I found it!!
Mom said we could have the catnip. We played with our mousie toys and she sprinkled a bit of it over them.

Rescue humans never know what to expect when they go into a house! That’s why they’re so special and the kitties they rescue will love them forever. Here is the story of GUSSIE 137518 and how she met her forever Mom:

Gussie’s future Mom went to the house initially because the woman there did not know how to tell what gender her kittens were. An easy visit for an experienced kitty person, right? Not so much! When she got there, today’s heroine (we’ll call her “Mommy”) found a litter of five week old kittens and scrawny malnourished mother barely out of kittenhood herself. They had no bedding and not even a litter box, and were being fed raw hamburger.

Then, a boy came in and grabbed one of the kittens roughly and dropped it to the floor. While Mommy worked (successfully!) to get this kitten breathing again, he grabbed a second kitten and handled it just as roughly as he had the first. As Mommy scooped up that kitten he grabbed yet another one up by the ear. A horrified Mommy knew she had to get this kitty family out of there ASAP, and asked if she could take all of them and the mother as well. At this point, the man of the house told her in very impolite terms that she could take them all, because he hated cats.

On the way home, Mommy stopped at the vet with her new charges. It was found that two kittens had damage to their necks and Gussie’s ribs were fractured. All have now healed, although one of Gussie’s sisters still tends to duck when someone reaches for her. The mother cat’s throat was damaged also, and Gussie sums it up “her purr makes squeaky noises but we love her purr anyway.” Four of her siblings have been adopted, but so far Gussie gets to stay with her special rescuer.

I love happy endings! And thanks to her loving Mommy, Gussie and her fur mom & siblings got one!

"Mikey's Meow-velous Mothers" - May 25
Sometimes, no matter how dedicated a fur mom may be, she finds herself raising her kittens in an impossible situation and needs some extra special help. Heading into the last week of my campaign, I am rounding things out by focusing on some very special “mothers”, those humans who are involved in the rescue, care and fostering of kitties in need. So many of the Moms & Dads on CC are involved in this important work that I can’t possibly recognize them all, but I’ve chosen some of the most special stories to share with you this week.

One of these is the story of a vet tech named Kellie, who was a hero to many animals in need including BUG #132931

Animal Control workers found Bug, an obvious victim of torture, emaciated and hanging from a fencepost by his collar. An attempt to escape left the collar wrapped around his neck and front leg like a sash, the weight of his body causing the collar to dig in to his body and creating a nasty wound. The verdict of the vet was that he was damaged beyond hope.

Then along came Kellie, who had a history of success with “hopeless cases”. She was determined to save this little kitty who had been through so much. Bug had great difficulty eating, but Kellie gave him the encouragement he needed to keep trying. She spent hours each day flushing his wounds and nurturing him with food, comfort, and much needed love. Over the next few weeks, Bug recovered and was adopted into a forever home where he is loved as he deserves. His Mom gives all the credit to Kellie, her caring determination and special way with animals in need.
Happy Birthday wishes to BENJI #179361, MONTGOMERY BROWN #205803, CASSANDRA BROWN #205806

Bivouac of the Dead by Theodore O'Hara

Their silent tents to spread,
And glory guards, with solemn round
The bivouac of the dead.

I’ve saved the three most unusual stories of surrogate mothers for last! These both come from a book called “Cat’s Company”.

The first of these concerns a half-Persian cat named BLACKIE, who adopted a motherless baby turkey! She brought mice for the tiny fowl to eat, and when for some unknown (at least to Blackie!) reason her adopted baby was not able to handle this food as well as her own kittens could, she kept trying different food items until, by trial and error, she found the things that the orphaned chick could eat. Blackie continued to watch over this particular turkey even after it was grown, mated, and had a family of its own.

Then there was the barnyard cat in Beaumont, Jersey, England. This kitty’s name has not come down to us, but her story has. This unusual kitty actually adopted a baby mouse after having eaten its mother!

After dispatching the mother and carrying the tiny baby rodent back to her own kittens, the farmer expected her to use the helpless creature for a lesson to her own young ones on how to handle prey. Instead, her maternal instincts were aroused and she began to clean, nurse, and generally care for it along with her own litter. Some weeks later this mouse, now grown, wandered away from its adoptive family into the nearby woods. To the astonishment of the farmer who witnessed this, the mother cat became very distraught at the loss of one of her babies. She “yowled mournfully into the night until the wayward mouse returned home to the strangest nest that a rodent has ever occupied.”

Today’s third story comes out of the Novosibirsk Zoo in Siberia, and was reported in the Moscow Times, November 2001. This zoo found itself with two wolf cubs whose own mother could not produce enough milk for them. Only a few days old, their eyes not yet open, they were brought to another zoo resident who was raising one offspring of her own. Two weeks later when their eyes opened, these two wolf cubs could not have cared less to find that the warm furry source of their delicious milk was actually MUSYA, a Siamese cat! Strange but true!

hi mika
maybe momma will get out and do some weeding or something. she has been watering the plants at least. yesterday was a bad day as it was doodlebug's dopty day. we are so glad everyone listened and the cmr crew removed it from the list. that would have been salt in the wound for momma.
we have had a little rain and a few storms have skirted by us just hit an miss showers and storms. is heading for the 90's so i guess momma will probably close the windows and turn on the a/c i know she will hold out as long as she can.
she has talked bout making us stay inside but just cannot bring herself to close off the cat door in case doodle was to come up. it is a terribly hard thing this not knowing and it is really hard on angel summer also. he misses her terribly
have a good evening

Sometimes in traveling around CC, I notice that it almost seems to be raining kittens around our friends’ Moms & Dads! So many kitties here were found by kind humans and bottle raised. A few of these are:

ROCKY #3105, found at 2 days old and grew into 21 pounds of kitty love

K. SPARKY #3436, found in the weeds as a tiny little guy, only 7 days old. At 14, he’s still his Mom’s very special baby boy, and helps show younger siblings and fosters the ropes. The latest of these is a little guy named BANDIT.

LILY ANN #182054, found in her Mom’s yard. After a vet said she wouldn’t live through the night, she spent a month living in her Dad’s shirt pocket and being fed every hour. The vet was wrong!

SIMBA & TIGRESS #218314, the only two survivors from a feral mother

ANGEL KIKI #165201, hand raised with his two siblings after their fur mom died the day after they were born.

WHITEY #211606, also hand raised with three siblings when their fur mom died after giving birth

SIMBA #3027, found with his littermates in a dumpster when they were a week old.

CARMAN #188523, found abandoned in an alley at three weeks old, mewing for her Mom. Instead she found a human Mom.

Our most recent additions are the five kittens that SHELBY #219701’s Grandpa found in a box at the dump! He couldn’t leave the little 3 week old furrballs, so cruelly abandoned, so he brought them home and Shelby’s Grandma started bottle feeding them. She did a good job, because the kittens are now healthy little bundles of energy looking for forever homes. Well, except for one the little cutie now known as MIDNIGHT BOO BOO #233023!
Q. Lola says that not only does she know the setting of yesterday’ s story, she once posted a video of it here on CC. Go to “Cat Videos” along the left hand side of the page, then do a search for “Jardin Botanico”. She also says that there has been a spay & neuter program going on there these past years, and now almost all of the cats there have been spayed or neutered so there will hopefully be no more homeless kittens born there.

If our retired Queen Lola does not know this next kitty, she probably knows the setting for the story, which comes one again from the Animal Rescue Site. It starts with a human couple out walking in the Botanical Gardens of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was fairly common to see abandoned cats doing their best to live in this park, and one day the couple’s attention was caught by a young female, alone near a cardboard box. For three days they watched her avoid trouble with other cats, and approach passing humans for food and attention. It was apparent that this fairly young kitty had very recently had kittens, but the couple could not find any of them. After much soul searching, the couple gathered her up and took her home, giving her the name KITTIN.

On the other side of this park, around the same time, they found a young kitten without a mother, who they also took home in hopes that Kittin and the baby would be able to help one another out. Within 10 minutes of being together in the safety of the couple’s apartment, Kittin and the new arrival, who they named JUANITA, had adopted one another as mother and daughter.

Their humans report that the pair have been inseparable ever since. When the family travels, they go along, and Kittin even has her own Facebook page!

From abandoned pet to Queen of the House, let’s hear it today for Kittin and her family!

The Animal Rescue site has a lot of amazing rescue stories. In fact, they are offering an E-book of their best 100 rescue stories for a very reasonable price, which goes to help shelter animals. Check it out, and while you’re there, click the purple paw button to help feed shelter animals. And if you don’t already have a favourite, consider dropping a vote for K. Today we have two stories of foster “mothers” who are actually male! In fact, our first story features three foster “mothers”. The first is a dog named Huckleberry, who one day managed to find a tiny kitten in his back yard. The tiny creature was less than a week old! Huck knew what to do, and went to his humans for help. His humans brought the tiny little bundle into the house, wrapped in a towel for warmth. He was dehydrated, starving, and had a massive eye infection.

This little baby, who became PADDY #99342, was bottle fed by his human Mom (the second foster mother), and once his infections cleared up his older feline brother COPPER #93709 took over the work of teaching Paddy how to play, use the litter box, and just generally be a cat.

Another male foster “mother” among our CC members is KOSHKA #108393. One day a young boy was given a tiny kitten that his classmate had found. He couldn’t keep the baby, but his mother knew someone who could help – her friend, Koshka’s Mom. Well, she and the little fluffball, who she named KATYA #108396, took to one another right away but of course Katya had to be kept separated from the older male Koshka until they could be properly introduced.

When her new human Mom had to leave Katya alone in her room, Koshka’s ears pricked up at the tiny peeps sounding from behind the closed door. He led his Mom back to the door and pawed at it in concern. When the door was opened, he ran to the kitten and began to snuggle and lick her. Katya and her big brother still like to snuggle to this day!

MORE DOGS! The story of Rosie the dog the other day got some kitties reminiscing. LEO #188022 tells us that when he was a tiny kitten the Zoo Crew’s two large canine members, JADA LYNN and LOKJE, also pitched in to help nurture him & his siblings. Lokje would pick up any kitten she felt needed attention and carry it gently to Mom & Dad. And Jada Lynn welcomed cuddles and even clumsy attempts to nurse from Leo when his fur mom was not available. They’re still the best of friends, as you can see by his profile picture.

When ANGEL KAYCEE #45862 joined her forever family at 6 weeks old, NIKKI the Chow Chow also stepped into the mothering role. This is all the more touching since the rest of Kaycee’s litter had been killed by a dog.

Mallow & Evie found today’s story hiding among the many hundreds of rescue stories on the Animal Rescue Site. We’d like to introduce you to a kitty named COUGAR.

One day a rescue human was doing her volunteer shift on at an Adoption fair and had to bring the two little kittens she was bottle feeding with her. Every time the little babies would let out a peep one of the kitties up for adoption, Cougar, would get agitated and try to get to them. So the volunteer figured, why not see what happens? Well, Cougar got right into the carrier with the kittens and began washing and fussing over them. When one adventurous little fuzzball ventured out the open carrier door, Cougar pulled it back inside. She also tended expertly to the cleaning and toilet duties that are so challenging for humans who are taking care of orphan babies. By the end of the Adoption fair, the volunteer had gotten permission to bring Cougar home with her to help with the kittens. A week later, Cougar even started producing milk and the bottles were no longer necessary!

Pretty cool, right? Well, it gets even better. You see, Cougar had initially come into the shelter from a dog pound, pregnant and with a birth defect that gave her only one eye with limited vision in it. After her rescue it became necessary to remove her damaged eye AND the functioning one as well. So this loving surrogate mother kitty, Cougar, who stepped in to raise the two orphan kittens, had no eyes at all!

After the kittens were successfully reared and weaned, they AND their caretaker Cougar went to new forever homes.

The Animal Rescue site has a lot of amazing rescue stories! Go by and check it out, and while you’re there, click the purple paw button to help feed shelter animals. And if you’re not already voting for your own special shelter, consider leaving a vote for K. Easy’s shelter, the Animal Care Centre of St. John, US Virgin Islands, in the Shelter Challenge.
