How We Met

I was at a petstore getting something for my other cat when a lady looked into the kitten pen and said that she was homely and would never amount to anything. I just had to have her to prove the lady wrong. She's still around and healthy after 19 years and I have NEVER regretted it!!

Hey Everybody!
Remember me? It's Rocky! And today is International Tongue Twister day! Hooray! Last time, I gave you the one about where she sits, remember? This time I actually have a tongue twister poem. Yes, there are such things! Ready? Here goes:

The Two-Toed Tree Toad

A tree-toad loved a she-toad
Who lived up in a tree.
He was a two-toed tree-toad,
But a three-toed toad was she.
The two-toed tree-toad tried to win
The three-toed she-toad's heart,
For the two-toed tree-toad loved the ground
That the three-toed tree-toad trod.
But the two-toed tree-toad tried in vain;
He couldn't please her whim.
From her tree-toad bower,
With her three-toed power,
The she-toad vetoed him.

Poor toad. :)

Hi again!
The thing you describe about finding Feeley in her basket is just what happened with another old girl I had named Sugar. She was a 17 year old Maine Coon. She was up playing, eating, grooming herself just fine the night before Thanksgiving in 2007. She wasn't even slowing down a bit.

She chased a toy mouse around for a little while, got a drink, then went to bed in her basket in the bedroom. I got up in the morning and started Thanksgiving dinner. Sugar was still in her basket, which wasn't unusual. After a couple hours I wondered why Sugar hadn't come out, so I went to check on her. She was still all curled up in her basket looking cozy as could be. I petted her - and realized she had died! She just slept her way into heaven. She never made a sound.

I always wish my other cats could go as peacefully as she did. Just like Aurora, she had never been sick a day in her life. Neither one ever had to go to the vet for anything. They were always healthy! 've had other cats that were so ill or injured I had to have them put down at the vet's office. Now THAT is heart wrenching! (Both Angel Buster and Angel Louie had to be put down. It was horrible)

I'll keep Feeley in my prayers. She's a good old girl.

PS - As for Bee Gee letting me know about Aurora being in trouble, it's odd, because Bee Gee is usually the resident trouble-maker. But she is also the household supervisor. I guess she just knew something wasn't right. She is a pretty good girl - when she's not causing trouble! :)

Hello Feeley
And Jennifer. Thanks for stopping by with your kind words regarding Aurora's passing. It was pretty difficult, yes it was. You will understand, having been with your Feeley for so long! It's so hard to believe she's really gone, even though it has been nearly two weeks now.

She had been doing fairly well, for her age. She was always pretty slim, and never very active. Anyway, she just gradually started eating less and less, until I had to start feeding her with a syringe. She was still walking around and using the litter, and drinking water on her own. I guess she was just finally getting tired, and had no more appetite.

I made her a bed in the living room because I was afraid she would get hurt trying to keep jumping up and down from my bed, where she always slept behind my head on my pillow. She was getting a little unsteady on her feet. That last morning another cat, Bee Gee, started meowing at me and swatting my ankle. She led me to Aurora, who was having trouble breathing. I'm sure it was her heart shutting down. Bee Gee and I sat with her. I kept petting her and telling her not to worry, that she could go now, it would be alright. It was only about 15 minutes, and Aurora took a deep breath and stopped breathing. And that was all.

I brought her outside and buried her at the end of our row of rose bushes. She was an incredible companion, intelligent, patient, fearless, quiet, mild. There will never be another one like her. Thank you for letting Feeley be her friend.

I wish the best for dear Feeley. There's nothing quite like a wise old cat for friendship.

Thank you. Val

Hi Feeley!
Eeeeeee!! I'm so happy to hear from you!! Well, to be honest, I've been a little down lately. See, mom caught this stray cat, and it was pregnant, and then it had babies, and mom decided to give the mama and babies MY bedroom! Hmmpphhh! So I've had to suffer sleeping in the living room and I positively HATE it! Mom says those awful babies will be leaving in two weeks and I'll get my room back. Well, I should HOPE SO! Of all the nerve anyway!

But other than that things have been about the usual. I'm a little underweight, because I've been pouting and not wanting to eat much, but mom is really sucking up to me and giving me this really tasty appetite stimulant. Hahaa! Got her wrapped around my little paw! So with any luck I should be back in my place of honor in about 2 weeks.

You know, our weather here has been pretty mild so far, by mild I mean cool. We would usually be in the mid to upper 80's by now, and closing in on the 90's. We're loving it!

Thanks so much for stopping by. I love to hear from my "old" friends! MOL!

Hi Feeley!
Well, I'm looking forward to spring and summer, too. I love having the windows open. There's a large arborvitae right outside the bedroom window that always has dozens of birds in it early in the morning and I love to lay in bed and listen to them all squabbling! Haha! I can't see, and you can't hear. We got it covered, don't we, sister! :)

Mom doesn't treat me too much like a useless old sack of bones, but she does keep an eye on me when I'm moving around, since the other cats don't understand why I bump into them sometimes, and they'll swat at me. Mom doesn't like that. My sweet friend Toby never swats at me. He's so gentle. Pig and Bee Gee don't usually either. But Mr. Sniff is a ruffian! Sissy is a little high strung, too.

It was so nice to hear from you. Mom had thought about starting a senior cat club, but I told her I just don't have the energy to attend meetings! :) She decided to shelve the idea for the time being - good mom.

Hope, Freedom, Amber, and Flag
Here is a little-known story of survival from the World Trade Center tragedy:

The World Trade Center recovery effort brought much sadness but there were also many tales of bravery and survival. They include one very resourceful cat. Beneath the destroyed area where the World Trade Center once stood, life was found in a forgotten basement. Rescuers discovered a blast survivor curled up in a carton of napkins. When the box was brought up, there were even more survivors - three kittens.

A mother cat had found her way into a safe, secure area to give birth to her kittens in a box of napkins. Into the horror and chaos of destruction, this little cat brought the miracle of life. Rescuers felt these little survivors needed names. Momma has been christened "Hope", and the babies are "Freedom", "Amber" and "Flag." It's very fitting for a family determined to survive against the worst of odds. The entire family was healthy and well, and were eventually adopted into furever homes.

Hi Feeley!
So very nice to hear from you! Yup, I sleep at least 22 hours a day! But when I'm awake, I'm all around. I guess I get some exercise. And I still jump up onto the bed with no trouble. The eyesight has gone, though. Can't see a darn thing! But I know my way around this house better than mom! Haha!

Not much going on around here today except mom's exploding microwave! It's actually been dying a slow death for a couple weeks but when it caught on fire last night mom decided it was time to retire it permanently! Gee, ya think? Trouble was this morning, mom's one of those "never let anything go to waste" types, so yesterday's left-over coffee needed to be warmed up somehow. Now, she usually uses the microwave, but alas, old Fireball is on permanent vacation. So, how to heat up that old gunk .... Hmm ...Well, she just put it in a saucepan and heated it up on the stove! Brilliant, mom! She says it tastes just fine. I think she's in denial! Haha!

The Legend of the Christmas Tabby
There was no snow that night in Bethlehem. Instead a small cat watched a starry sky from her perch in the window of a stable. She liked the stable, for it was a warm safe place to raise her babies, and the innkeeper sometimes left scraps out for her to nibble. Tabby wasn't particularly distinctive, and most humans didn't look at her twice. After all, her short grey, black fur was quite common. But Tabby's striped coat hid a heart bigger than cat's twice her size.

This night, though, Tabby was out of sorts, for she has not been able to hunt for her dinner. Traveler's had poured into town for days, so noisy they disturbed decent cat folks' rest. They invaded Tabby's quiet stable, a place she had shared before with only other furry creatures. Tabby hadn't minded the human couple, they were more calm than most. She'd left that morning for her rounds, but when she returned the stable was packed with people. From her perch on the window. Tabby watched the last of the strangers leave. She slipped from the window, and padded inside, then froze! Meww meww! cried a tiny voice. A kitten!

Tabby's ears turned this way and that to locate the kitten's voice. It came from the manger. Intent on the mewling that arose from within, Tabby was drawn by this kittenish sound, though she knew her own babies were grown to cat-hood. She tip-toed forward very slowly and passed by a woolly burro, a warm cow and other animals. The woman looked up and saw the striped cat. "Oh little cat", she murmured, "my baby cannot sleep, and nothing calms him this night". She sighed and turned back to the manger. " How grateful I would be if you could bring him some rest."

As Tabby watched, each stable animal step forward and tried to soothe the woman's baby, but the kittenish sounds continued, and finally Tabby could contain herself no longer. Quickly she washed herself: paws, face, and ears, to the very tip of her tail, and then she shyly stepped forward. She leaped gracefully into the manger and stared at the face of the most beautiful baby, human or kitten, she had ever seen. She very carefully drew in her claws and settled down beside him. Forgotten was her empty tummy, she could only hear her heart calling out to this sweet human kitten.

Then Tabby began to purr. This wondrous cat-song filled the stable with over-whelming emotion. The animals listened in awe, and the child's mother smiled as her baby quietly went to sleep. The child's mother placed her hand on Tabby's forehead . "Blessings upon you, Tabby Cat, for this sweet gift given to my child", she said. And where she'd touched Tabby's brow, there appeared an "M", the sign of Madonna's benediction.

From that day forward, all proper Tabby cats are honored with an "M" on their brow for the great service preformed the first Christmas night. And Christmas nights often find Tabby cat staring into the night, purring as they recall a very special ancestor who once sang a baby to sleep.

Peace - Rocky

Final Feline Ailments

Symptoms: Having taken over a human lap, the cat proceeds to spread in all planes. This may be accompanied by secondary symptoms such as high volume purring, dribbling, kneading and snoring. The condition is highly contagious and several fungoid cats may infest a lap simultaneously.

Treatment: Topical treatment with proprietary anti-fungals is ineffective. Prompt treatment (as per Irritable Lap Syndrome) is required to alleviate the worst symptoms although in a number of cats, such treatment actually exasperates the condition. This disorder manifests itself periodically through the affected cat's life and there is no long-term cure.

Symptoms: Varied: sucking at clothing, owner's earlobes/ nose/fingers/skin, drooling, glazed expression. Often accompanied by kneading and high volume purring.

Treatment: Ultimately incurable. It is possible to remove smurglable items from around the cat. The ailment may be transmitted to humans in the form of large laundry bills, misshapen clothing and chapped skin.

Symptoms: Random dashes to helter-skelter running through house in pursuit of unseen prey. Greeblingz are believed to be non-visible entities and some authorities have linked them to UFO sightings or feel that they may be diminutive other-dimensional beings. Cats suffering from greeblingz typically have wild-eyed expressions. There is a minor danger of greeblingz attaching themselves to humans; if a cat tackles such greeblingz, injury to humans may result. A very few cats are naturally immune.

Treatment: None known. Anti-epileptics are ineffective as the condition appears unrelated to other forms of seizure. Avoid getting in the way of a cat engaged in greebling hunting. Attacks usually subside spontaneously, perhaps as greeblingz return to their own dimension. These irritating creatures are not visible to human eyes, but no doubt the superior sight and hearing of cats enables them to see them.

These are all the feline ailments I have in my files, but I'll bet many of you know of some of your own!

More Feline Ailments

Symptoms: A disorder more prevalent among outdoor-going cats and cats with access to attics and basements. Symptoms range from minor (the odd greenfly in tail, money-spider on fur) to severe (entire ecosystems of insects living on cat, spider webs spun between ears/whiskers, cat so weighed down with spider webs that it has difficulty walking).

Treatment: Minor symptoms can be treated by simply removing the infesting agent (aphid, ladybug, spider, etc.) and combing webs out of fur. If the cat suffers recurrent or severe symptoms an exercise regime is highly recommended since highly mobile cats appear to attract fewer greenfly (research into this factor continues).

Symptoms: The cat appears unable to settle comfortably on laps, instead treading, kneading, rearranging itself, fidgeting, vocalizing, getting up and turning around, falling off lap and getting back on again, attacking magazines, needlework, computer keyboard, telephone, etc.

Treatment: Immediate treatment is essential. Drop whatever you are doing (literally if need be) and give 100% attention to the sufferer, otherwise symptoms may escalate and become quite distressing to the lap-owner. Only prolonged attention will cure an attack of Irritable Lap Syndrome. Like Collapsible Legs this syndrome is incurable, although attacks may be effectively treated as and when they occur.

More tomorrow!

Feline Ailments
Having conquered cat flu, triumphed over tapeworm and braved behavioral quirks, it is time to focus attention on some oft-observed, but little-documented, afflictions of cats.

Symptoms: The affected cat places one side of its head on the ground as though cheek-marking the concrete, carpet, etc. After several such maneuvers, the legs on that side of the cat suddenly collapse, leaving the cat waggling its feet in the air.

Treatment: This involves placing the palm of one hand on the exposed belly and rubbing gently. There are side-effects though some feline sufferers attack the rubbing hand while others recover spontaneously, often after prolonged treatment. This condition is probably incurable and any cat which requires prolonged treatment after an attack will most likely suffer repeated attacks of collapsible legs throughout its lifetime.

Symptoms: The affected cat repeatedly headbutts any available part of a readily available human and turns its head slightly so that the lips and cheek are rubbed against legs, arms, clothing, etc. This condition gets its name from a contraction of the phrase "soggy nudging." Snudging may well be a form of excessive scent-marking. A bad attack can result in soggy clothing.

Treatment: Give the sufferer lavish affection. Most attacks subside between 10 minutes to 1 hour after onset of symptoms. You may need to dry off snudged clothing or skin. Attacks recur frequently, usually when the most readily available human is engrossed in a TV program, book or telephone call.

Symptoms: The cat spreads to take up all available free bed space at night. It then expands a bit more until any human occupants occupy the smallest possible area of bed. It may do this on top or underneath the covers or on the pillow. It is highly contagious -- any other cats on the bed will also develop symptoms of bed-hogging.

Treatment: The most obvious solution is to evict the cat from the bed. If this is morally unfeasible, train yourself not to give way as the cat expands. Buying a bigger bed is probably pointless as most affected cats can easily expand to fill standard, queen-sized and king-sized beds. Otherwise, simply train yourself to sleep while hanging precariously off the side of the bed. Attacks of bed-hogging have been known to last up to 23 hours (in one case a 3-day attack was noted by a cat-owner who was confined to bed with flu; the cat thoughtfully kept her company during this time).

More ailments tomorrow!

Come Saturday Morning
The Sandpipers
Words by Dory Previn and Music by Fred Carlin

Come Saturday morning
I'm goin' away with my friend
We'll Saturday-spend till the end of the day
Just I and my friend
We'll travel for miles in our Saturday smiles
And then we'll move on
But we will remember long after Saturday's gone

Just I and my friend (my friend)
We'll travel for miles in our Saturday smiles
And then we'll move on
But we will remember long after Saturday's gone

Come Saturday morning
I'm goin' away with my friend
We'll Saturday-laugh more than half of the day
Just I and my friend
Dressed up in our rings and our Saturday things
And then we'll move on
But we will remember long after Saturday's gone

Just I and my friend (my friend)
We'll travel for miles in our Saturday smiles
And then we'll move on
But we will remember long after Saturday's gone

Have a great Caturday

Hi Feeley girl!
Long time no meow! How have you been? I think mom is planning on changing my profile page into something else. I don't know what, but it won't be featuring me! I don't know when either, but probably not soon. She says she has to "think" about it! {:D

Hope you're doing well. Purrs

When you're smilin'....keep on smilin'

So stop your frownin' happy again

Hi Feeley & Flossy
We totally understand. It is hard for my mom too, to make time for the internet. Humans are always so busy all the time. Mom only checks in when she has the time. Hopes your all good.LAV.

Cat Diary Part III
DAY 771 - There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the foul odor of the glass tubes they call "beer." More importantly I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

DAY 774 - I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The Bird on the other hand has got to be an informant. He has mastered their frightful tongue (something akin to mole speak), and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time.

This ends the diary installments, but some of you have left such delightful replies, it seems you have been at work yourselves on your own journals! Nice work! >^-.-^<
