About Me

Active within 1 Day

Hi! My name is Ammie - vote for Angel Kuce #7387 in December

I am Domestic Longhair from North Port, FL

Nicknames: Ammie, Sweetheart, Angel, Mom's little girl, Ams, Ammie Jo, Miss Ammo

Age: 11 years old

Gender: F

Coat: long haired

Education: She's learning how to trust after a rough start in life.

COTD 7/24/2009 in Pittsburgh
COTD 5/1/2011 in Florida
COTD 5/13/12 - Thanks to all my furriends for the Special COTD Catpaign for Mother's Day
COTD 11/25/13 in Florida

My favorite tricks and treats are: What are tricks? and None yet. Still exploring.

Where I hang out: None yet. Still exploring.

My favorite grubs: Purina Naturals

My pet peeves: Being petted around the behind and brushed.

What I love about my owners: She gave me a chance at a furever home.

My cat hobbies: Sitting on her first Mom's lap and purring. Her second Mom can't wait until that day happens for her!

Pet motto: Don't mess with me. AND.. A good furever home should be cherished.. Amaretto's letter to Santa - Dear Santa, Yesterday, I overheard two small humans talking about you. They said they had written you a letter asking for some gifts, and were excited that you would be visiting their homes to make your very special deliveries. I must admit, the whole thing sounded a bit farfetched – I had never heard anything like it in all my six years. There was something about large animals with horns that fly through the sky pulling a sleigh. The only animals I’ve seen walk on four feet like me. And I don’t know where the North Pole is, but I’ve lived at Animal Friends in the North Hills for nearly a year and a half now, so I figure maybe you’re close by. Yesterday, as I groomed my long gray and white fur and napped in my cage, I had a thought. If you can bring presents to good girls and boys, you might be able to help me. I’ll admit I do love kitty treats, and enjoy a good romp with a laser light. But do you know what I really want? A home of my own, with someone to love me. When the volunteers let me out of my cage to play, I love their company and rub up against them to tell them to pet me. And you won’t need mistletoe if you want to give me a holiday kiss. I’ve spent some time in foster care, and was so happy to be in a home. Instead of visions of sugarplums, thoughts of a loving, forever place to hang my stocking dance in my head. This holiday season, I’m hoping someone is looking for a loyal furry friend. Instead of delivering a present to me, I’d love to hitch a ride in your sleigh to my own special place, where I can give all my love to a someone with a quiet home and room in their heart for me. If you can find your way to Animal Friends, I’ll be waiting for you, and hoping to see you. We don’t have milk and cookies here, but I’ll take up a collection among my fellow residents and we’ll leave a pile of yummy cat treats for your reindeer. We’ll even promise not to hiss at them. So Santa, although I’ve had my doubts, I’m hoping that this year will bring a holiday miracle, not just for me, but for all the other homeless dogs, cats and bunnies here at Animal Friends. We’ll be waiting to hear hooves on the rooftop, and dreaming of warm laps and cuddling up on a cold winter day in a home of our own. Love, Amaretto P.S. Ammie's wish was granted twice!

How We Met

She was at the shelter for over a year and a half and reminded me of Hannibal. She was abused and seized, and needed a home where someone could be patient and work with her. I saw her letter to Santa in the shelter newsletter and it broke my heart. I knew I had to adopt her and give her a chance.

Her first Mom, Kathy S., passed away Sunday, April 17, 2011.

Ammie was adopted on April 21st. She started on her trip from Pittsburgh, PA to her new home on Monday, April 25 with the "Honeysuckle Hauling Company" with a 3-day stopover at the Kitty B&B-Atlanta, where she had a spa day! Ammie was treated to a new hairdo & pawdicure before continuing on to her new home. She arrived in North Port FL on Saturday April 30th, 2011, at 7:30pm.

**Ammie misses her brothers Bennie, Indie, Angel Giovani, & Angel Kato, but she knows they will all be in touch with one another. Ammie also believes she is a "world" traveler, and I'm not going to tell her any different!

ood afternoon kitties. Today's topic: COUGHING!!!

Coughing is Nature's way of saying goodbye to dust, bacteria, tickly hairs and all other itchy things that sail into our throats...but in animals, coughing is UNUSUAL. While it normal for Fluffy to hack a hairball, constant coughing is something to look into.

PROTECT HIM FROM THE ELEMENTS: Like people, pets will occasionally cough in response to pollen, dust or even fumes from household cleaners. Try keeping your pet in another room when you clean and dust. Open windows if you can for him to breathe in fresh air...in warmer months you can keep him outdoors while you clean.

OUT DOWN THOSE SMOKES: You already know that smoking isn't good for you. It can be even worse for Fido and Fluffy. So do not smoke around your pets.

UP THE HUMIDITY: When air is dry, mucus in the throat & airways gets thick and sticky, signalling the body to cough. Take your pet in the bathroom when you shower and let him breathe in the moist air. Use a humidifier or a vaporizer in your home and it will help reduce the dryness in the air.

STOP IT AT THE SOURCE: If your pet is coughing more than once an hour, he can probably benefit from a cough suppressant. Use a product containing the active ingredient dextromethorphan, such as Robitussin Maximum Strength Cough Syrup. Ask your vet for the right does for your pet.NEVER give pets cough syrup containing aspirin or acetaminophen, which is dangerous to pets.

SLIP IT DOWN: If the cough syrup comes in a liquid form, tip the animals head up, pull the loose skin up from the mouth and make a funnel, then spoon in the proper amount.

TRY ANOTHER OTC: When coughing is caused by hay fever, giving an OTC like Benedryl can reduce the irritation..ask your vet for the proper amount to give your pet.

KEEP HIM TRIM: Weight is often a significant factor in older pets. Getting a few pound off of them will stop the coughing.

KEEP HER CALM: Stressful situations can trigger cough attacks. So when your pets symptoms flare up, give her extra love and attention until things are calm.

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: When pets start coughing, it is sometimes a warning sign that something serious is wrong, like pneumonia, asthma, bronchitis, or even a collapsed wind-pipe.

If Fido is coughing and also breathing rapidly or seems short of breath or has a swollen abdomen, get him to the Vet immediately.

Coughing is rare in cats, with the exception of expelling hairballs, so if Fluffy is coughing, take her to the Vet asap.

TOMORROW: CONSTIPATION!!

Today's topic: HIVES!

When your pets hind legs starts whirling like a propeller and you hear that 'thump, thump, thump' on the floor, you know there's something itchy going on.

TRY AN ANTIHISTAMINE: OTC medications like Benedryl block the effects of histamine, a body chemical that causes itching. Call your vet before administering it, he will recommend the proper dosage for your pet.

SCRATCH THE OINTMENTS: While topical medications like calamine or hydrocortisone cream can help relieve itching, they are not effective on pets and the animals will usually lick it off.

HANDS OFF: Rare is the cat or dog that won't appreciate your giving him an assertive scratch. In the case of hives, however, scratching only makes the itching worse, so keep your hands to yourself and do not scratch your pet.

TEST THINGS AROUND YOUR HOME: Pets can be allergic to everyday house-hold products, like soaps, shampoo, cleaning products, etc, or even to your deodorant. If you notice your pet itching after using something, try another product..this can take time, so you will have to be patient.

TRY DIFFERENT DIETS: Some pets are allergic to ingredients in pet foods. Try different formulas until you find one he can eat without an allergic reaction. You can also get creative and make your own. Cats especially like rabbit meat and cooked rice.

Your vet may also recommend a commercially prepared food made especially for allergic pets and they come in different varieties.

Hello Ammie

Thank you for your prayers & sweet Happy Adoptiversary wishes. I have good mews to share today! Dr. William called Mommy this morning to report that my levels have decreased even more after the IV fluids for 2 days. My BUN = 38 and Creat = 2.5. He wants me to finish this bag of fluids today, so Nana & Mommy will pick me up this afternoon.

I will visit Dr. William next week for another bloodwork recheck and sub-q fluids. Our goal right now is for me to receive sub-q fluids once a week. We hope & pray that plan works out. We will find out more next week.

Thanks again for your continued prayers. James 5:16 says “The intense prayer of the righteous is very powerful.” Amen to that!

Good afternoon kitties. Today's topic is: BLADDER CONTROL PROBLEMS:!!

Few things are less savory than discovering an unpleasant odor emanating from your potted plants or a puddle in your living room. Oh no, she has done it again. It is normal for puppies and kittens to make mistakes. But when your grown up pet has suddenly stopped making it to litter box or back yard on time, there could be something physically wrong.

HOLD THE NIGHTCAP: To help keep floors dry while you sleep, try putting out only a small amount of water at night. Don't stop the water entirely. For some pets going without water can be dangerous.

PROVIDE EXTRA BATHROOMS: When Fluffy has poor control, the last thing she needs is a litter box that's far away. To make sure she can get relief when she needs it, have an extra litter box on every floor.

KEEP IT TIDY: Even desperate cats can be finicky, and if the litter isn't kept clean, they refuse to use it. Clean out your cats boxes with each bowel movement, or at least once a day.

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: While even the best-behaved pet can have accidents, a sudden change for the worse could mean trouble. Pets that urinate frequently or in all the wrong places could have a bladder infection, diabetes, hormone imbalance or even kidney failure.

Call your vet if any changes in your pets usual habits persist for more then 2 days or if the urine is discolored or if it's difficult for her to go.

Good afternoon kitties. Today's topic is: MATTED COATS!!

Is your pet having a bad hair day? Is her coat all gnarly and matted??? It's not much fun getting tangled up with matted fur. Hundreds of hairs can be involved in just one mat.

KEEP HER DRY: Once your pets matted hair gets wet, if they get wet, they will be even more difficult to remove. So keep her dry until you get the mats out.

LET FINGERS DO THE WALKING: Untangling a mat takes patience, but it can be done. Starting at the ends of the hairs and working inward--hair by hair if necessary--divide the mat in half with your fingers. Then divide it in quarters and pull til they come out. Then run a comb through the hair to make her coat smooth.

GIVE MATS THE BRUSH OFF: Your pets brush can be a great mat-fighter. Beginning near the tips of the hair and using short rapid strokes, gently brush upward. As the hair gets smooth, gradually work your way down toward the skin.

COAX THEM OUT WITH CORNSTARCH: A light sprinkling of cornstarch makes stubborn mats easier to pull apart. It helps the hair glide right out of the mat. As you work, add more cornstarch as needed.

SLIDE THEM OUT WITH SPRAY: Pet stores sell sparys made specifically for detangling mats. They typically contain lanolin, which helps hairs glide out of the mat. Make sure to get "Feline Friendly" if used for cats.

TAKE IT IN STAGES: If your pet has more than one mat or one large mat that's particularly tough, it's a good idea to do the job in stages. Work on them 10 minutes at a time, then give your pet extra love and maybe a special treat.

GET THEE TO A GROOMER: Professional groomers have special tools to help untangle tough mats. It's important to remember that even groomers sometimes give up and take a shortcut.

BRUSH HIM UP: Once your pet is mat-free, giving him a daily brushing will help keep his coat smooth. Since every pets coats are different, ask your local pet store for the best brush to use on your pet.

GET HER IN CONDITION: Using a conditioner will help keep your pets coat smooth and healthy. Apply the conditioner once a week. Follow label instructions and for cats, make sure it is "Feline Friendly".

TAKE A SHORT CUT: One fool-proof way to prevent matting is to keep your pets coat short. It's much better in the long run to prevent mats and having to get rid of them.

Good afternoon kitties. Today's topic is: BURRS!!!!

You had a great time hiking through the fields & forests, but now it's time to pay the price. It seems your companion has bought back a coat loaded with burrs. This is a real thorny problem and here are a few tips to help remove them with ease.

TAKE THE DRY ROAD: Once burrs get snarled into your pets coat, be sure to remove them before he gets wet. The tangled hair around the burr will shrink like wool after it gets wet and you'll have an extra hard time getting the burrs out.

PUT YOUR FINGERS TO WORK: It's really important to remove burrs as soon as you can so they don't dig in and create mats and irritation. If the burr has just recently lodged, you might be able to remove it with just your fingers or a pair of tweezers.. If it's been there longer, it may be tangled inside a hair mat. To Undo the mat, pull it apart with your fingers little by little, working from the end of the hairs down towards the root. After you remove the burrs, run a comb or brush his coat to smooth things out.

LOOSEN 'EM WITH LUBE: When a burr is really tangled, applying a little vegetable oil will help get it loose. You can also use a detangling spray available at your local pet store, make sure it is feline friendly if used on cats.

TRY THE KINDEST CUT: If you're having problems getting the burr out, especially on long-haired pets, try cutting them out. Use blunt-tipped scissors to avoid accidentally gouging your pet. Cut perpendicular to the mat, not parallel to it. Only cut the hair and not your pets skin.

TAKE YOUR TIME: Removing burrs can be very time-consuming & sometimes painful. Take frequent breaks when you're dealing with a dog or cat with many burrs. Remove them at 10 minute intervals, then praise your pet and give her a treat as a reward for being good and patient.

KEEP IT SHORT: Keeping your pets coat neatly trimmed won't prevent burrs from sticking, but it will make them easier to remove.

PASS UP PRICKLY PLACES: In the future, the one sure way to avoid burrs is to stay away from infested areas. If you know which field they are in, take another route.

TOMORROW: WOUNDS!!!

Good afternoon kitties. Today we are discussing Animal bites to humans. Topic suggested by sisters, Dayzee, Duchess & Mischief.

Here's what to do if your 4-legged friend gets unfriendly.

NEVER PULL AWAY FROM A CAT: If your cat has your hand in his mouth, NEVER try to pull it away, he will think you are 'prey' and bite harder, instead, wait til he stops biting, or he may bite down damaging your muscles and tendons.
If you happen to have a spray bottle handy, you can spray Fluffy in the face, most cats do not enjoy being sprayed in the face and will run.

DO NOT WRESTLE WITH YOUR CAT: Unlike dogs, cats do not enjoy play wrestling, he may consider you attacking him and bite..if you try to pull your hand away suddenly he will bite down hard.

NEVER TRY TO PET A GROWLING CAT: If your cat is growling, he is probably angry and will swipe you or try to bite. Instead wait til kitty calms down and starts growling, then talk to her gently and then try to pet, if she growls, take your hand away.

TIPS IF ANIMALS BITE YOU:

ASSESS THE DAMAGE: Seek medical help for all bites except those that are minor.

THOROUGHLY WASH THE BITE: Animal bites--especially from cats--may transmit infection. Cleanse the wound thoroughly with warm water and soap to remove saliva, continue washing for a full 5 minutes.

CONTROL BLEEDING: If there is minor bleeding, cover the entire wound with a sterile gauze. You may put some ice against the gauze and elevate the wound above heart level to help stop bleeding.

BANDAGE THE AREA: When bleeding has stopped, cover the bite with a sterile bandage or clean cloth, tie or tape it loosely in place.

REDUCE PAIN: Use aspirin or acetaminophen to reduce pain. This is appropriate even if the bite did not break not break the skin., then apply ice if any swelling occurs.

GET A TETANUS SHOT: Any animal bite can lead to tetanus, so if you haven't had a shot in the past years, get one now!

SEE YOUR DR IMMEDIATELY: if you see redness, it feels hot to the touch or oozing or you think the bite is infected, see your DR ASAP....he will recommend an antibiotic and a course of treatment for you.

If you got bit by animal not your own, contact the animals owner to be sure if he is up to date on his rabies vaccine.

TOMORROW: FUSSY EATERS!

Hi Ammie and A.Yum Yum
Thank you for stopping by to help make my alleged birthday somewhat tolerable. It's a nasty day here, cold, foggy, and windy, and all I've been doing is looking out the window at nothing, or sitting by the fireplace trying to stay warm. And lazy old mom! Well, what can I say there? She's been no help at all! NO extras for my birthday today! No toys, no treats, no catnip cookies - NADA!! Didn't even sing "Happy Birthday"! Of course, she SAYS she's going shopping tomorrow (her excuse is that she wants to avoid the weekend crowds, but I suspect the real reason is football....) *grumble*

So anyway, there's a rumor that today is my birthday, but from what I can see around HERE, you sure could have fooled me! At least my pals from CC have been showing up. It's good to know who my REAL friends are! Hear that mom?? *hint hint* I can always pack my little meager collection of toys and my limp catnip banana and head for the offices at CC Central! I'll bet they would LOVE to have me! Why, I'd be showered with gifts! Not that I want - or need - a shower.

Thanks again for stopping by. I brought you some leftover egg nog from Thanksgiving, I'm sure it's still good. Mostly. And also a few slivers of stale catnip that leaked out of one of my toys. Hey, it was all I could find! But at least I have a big thank you vote to leave with you, too! Have a great day!

Good afternoon kitties!! Today's topic is: SHEDDING!!!

Whether you have a short-haired calico{like me} or a long haired collie{like Lassie}, the coming of Summer means there are more then just pollen in the air. Your pet can drop 1000's of hairs a day when she's shedding her winter coat.

GIVE HIM THE BRUSH OFF: If you're going to do one thing when your pet is shedding, you should brush brush and more brush...not all brushes are the same..you will need one that's suited for your pet..something that works for a long haired coat will not work well on a short haired coat.

GO DEEP: For brushing to be effective, you need to use firm, deep strokes. Short strokes are better then long ones cause they penetrate the coat more thoroughly.

RUB HER THE WRONG WAY: After brushing your pet from head to tail, reverse direction and go against the fur. This will help loosen hair you may have missed the first time.

DON'T GIVE HER ANY STATIC: Brushing against the fur will occasionally be a shocking experience for you and your pet. Her coat can build up a static charge and you can spark her. To prevent this, use a static-free brush.

SWITCH TO A COMB: After giving your pet a thorough brushing, you can pick up loads of additional hair by switching to a comb.

CONDITION HIS COAT: Occasionally applying a small bit of conditioner will make her coat smoother and easier to brush {especially for long haired pets}.

FOR CATS ONLY:
PUT ON PROTECTION: While some cats love to be brushed, others hate it, and will try to claw you, so putting on a pair of gloves will help save your hands and arms from scratches.

GET A GRIP: Holding Fluffy firmly by the scruff of the neck will help control her wilder instincts during grooming.

TOMORROW: ALLERGIES!!!

QUEEN KELS KAT REMEDIES
Good evening kitties. Today is moms birthday so she got a cake from her co-workers. Happy birthday to my mom.

Today's Topic: BITES!!!!

They don't call it a dog-eat-dog world for nothing. Big dogs bite little dogs and vice versa. Dogs chase cats, and cats fight back. Even squirrels, skunks and other critters will occasionally throw their hats into the ring. Any bite is potentially dangerous, so if your pet gets bitten, see your Vet ASAP!!!!

START WITH A MUZZLE: It's natural for an animal in pain to lash out. To protect yourself, wrap your pets mouth before treating him. If you have no muzzle you can improvise by wrapping gauze, panty hose or even a length of twine or rope several times around your pets mouth. Then pull the ends together and tie behind their ears.

WRAP HER UP: If FLUFFY OR FIDO are too small for a muzzle, protect yourself by wrapping her head with a towel before starting treatment.

GET IT CLEAN: Trim the hair around the wound to make it easier to clean. Flush for at least 5 minutes with warm water. If the bite is ore than 24 hours old, bacteria may have already taken hold. Scrub the wound carefully with an antibacterial soap, then flush it with warm water.

ADD EXTRA PROTECTION: After washing & drying the bite, apply an OTC triple antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin. Then bandage the area with gauze to keep it clean...to keep gauze in place you can use clear first-aid tape.

KEEP IT LOOSE:When applying and taping a bandage to a wound, leave enough room to get your finger underneath. Anything tighter can interfere with your pets circulation.

ENCOURAGE HER INPUT: Once the bandage is removed, it's natural for a pet to lick their wounds. In most cases this isn't a problem. In fact, licking helps speed the healing process.

KEEP UP WITH SHOTS: Rabies is a viral disease that without treatment is almost always fatal--to both pets and people. Keep your pets vaccinations up to date.

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: Look for these danger signs.
If touching the area around the wound causes Fido or Fluffy to jerk away, the wound could be infected. Severe blood loss. Bites to the abdomen or to the throat, injuries in these areas can cause damage to the windpipe or internal bleeding. If a wild animal bites your pet, it could be rabid so get your pet to the vet right away.

Tomorrow: SHEDDING.

Good morning kitties!!! Today's Topic is: HEARTWORMS!!!

It's bad enough when you get bitten by a hungry mosquito--and spend the rest of the day scratching.

For dogs and cats, however, mosquitoes are more then just an itchy annoyance. In certain parts of the Country like the Gulf Coast & Atlantic Coast, they carry heartworms. Most heartworms occur in dogs, however, cats can be infected as well.

STOP THEM AT THE GATE: Vets recommend that ALL dogs and some cats be given preventive medicine. This way, even if your pet is bitten by a mosquito, the medication is his bloodstream will destroy the infection...see your vet for the proper medication and dosage!

DON'T BE OVER CONFIDENT: Even if your pet never ventures outdoors, it's always possible that a mosquito may be in the house. Both indoor and outdoor pets should see a VET regularly for preventive medication.

DON'T NEGLECT THE TEST: It may be dangerous to give heartworm preventive medicine to a pet already infected, which is why most Vets perform a blood test before prescribing medication.

INVEST IN SNUG SCREENS: While you can't entirely exclude mosquitoes from your life{or your house}, putting up tight fitting screens will help keep the numbers low.

INVITE FRIENDS TO DINNER: Putting a Purple Martin birdhouse in your yard will attract these voracious birds, which can eat thousands of insects a day...It is also a good idea to eliminate ponds or pools of standing water where mosquitoes love to breed.

FOR CATS ONLY: Heartworms occur less often in cats, which is why cats aren't given the preventive medicine. Keep kitty indoors as much as possible, especially at night when mosquitoes are more prevalent.

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: Once your pet gets heartworm, its a difficult condition to treat. The drugs used to eradicate the worms contain arsenic, which can be more dangerous then the disease. It is CRITICAL to see your pets vet at the first sign of symptoms, which include coughing, rapid breathing and fatique.

QUEEN KELS KAT REMEDIES
Good evening kitties..today's topic is: FEVER!!!

You always knew your pet was 'hot-stuff', but today he really does seem to be over heating. Worse, he's moping around and doesn't even want to eat. What's turning up the heat??

It could be a virus...take your pets' temperature...the NORMAL body temp for dogs and cats is between 100.5* - 102.5*, if the thermometer registers over over 103* you can bet they are getting sick.

PRESS AWAY THE HEAT: One soothing way to lower your pets temperature is with cool water compresses. Soak a washcloth in cold water and wring it out and gently pat your pets belly. You can also use isopropyl alcohol...alcohol evaporates quickly from the skin.

RUN A COOL BATH: {I say run for the hills and hide} If your cat will hold still for it, putting her in a cool {NOT cold} bath for 10 minutes will help bring down the fever.

GIVE HIM A WRAP AROUND: To lower fever in a cat or a small dog, just place a towel soaked in cool water around him. Most will enjoy the coolness.

KEEP THE WATER BOWL FULL: A pet with a fever runs the risk of dehydration, so it's important to keep his water bowl full of fresh cold water at all times. If he doesn't want to drink, give him an ice cube instead.

ASK ABOUT ASPIRIN: While many vets are cautious when it comes to giving human medication to pets, aspirin can sometimes be used to help bring a fever down. Ask your vet before giving any aspirin to your pet and he will recommend the correct dosage.

DOES THE NOSE KNOW: just as we check a childs temp by feeling his forehead, we check our pets noses when they are feeling ill. While dogs and cats appreciate the attention, the nose is not an accurate gauge of temperature .

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: While most fevers are caused by minor viral infections, they can also be a sign of something more serious, such as hepatitis, pneumonia or Lyme Disease.

TO CHECK PETS TEMP: Lightly coat a rectal thermometer with petroleum jelly, holding the thermometer in one hand, your pets in the other, gently slide the thermometer two-thirds of it's length into the rectum. If the temp is over 103*, call your vet immediately.

TOMORROW: HEARTWORMS!

Good afternoon Kitties! Today's topic is: DEHYDRATION!!!

You wouldn't know it to look at her, but your pet is a veritable ocean of water. She needs all that fluid to keep her tissues moist and to transport ions, proteins and essential nutirents throughout her body.

Symptoms of dehydration include: dry mouth, sunken eyes, loss of elasticity in the skin and extreme exhaustion.

MOISTEN HER MUZZLE: While dogs and cats do not sweat much--they have only a few sweat glands between their toes--they can lose a lot of fluid through panting. To make sure your pet always has enough to drink, it's a good idea to keep 2 water bowls filled all the time, that way she will always have plenty to drink.

DON'T LET HIM GUZZLE: If your pet has gone a long time without water, letting him gulp down the entire bowl of water at once may result in vomiting.

ELECTROLYTE UP HER LIFE: Dehydration can cause your pet to lose electrolytes, minerals like potassium and sodium that transmit electrical impulses throughout the body. Try giving your pet Pedialyte, you can find it in most stores.

POUR A SPORTS DRINK: If your hot dog or cat seems reluctant to drink, try tempting him with an electrolyte-containing sports drink such as Gatorade. Some pets have a thing for sweet, fruity flavors.

LET HER LICK ICE: Pets that have gone a long time without water may have trouble keeping fluids down. A helpful alternative is to give her and ice cube.

GET WATER TO GO: To prevent dehydration from occurring, it's important to provide your pet with water even when you're away from the house. When and if you travel with your pets try keeping a no-spill water container in the car. Pet stores sell a variety of no-spill containers.

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: To test for dehydration, pull up the skin on your pets back, if it pulls up loose and lax, he could be dangerously low on fluids and should be seen by his VET right away!

Good evening kitties: Today's topic is "The Treed Kitty"..never been up a tree, pursonnaly, but Jesse has!

Rather he's chasing birds, escaping from dogs, or simply catching a high-altitude snooze, one of the cats favorite activities is climbing trees.

DON'T RALLY 'ROUND THE TREE: Just because your cat is out on a limb doesn't mean he needs your help. In fact, he'd probably prefer it if you'd go away and leave him alone.

GIVE HER TIME: While it's not impossible for a cat to be truly stuck in a tree, chances are he just hasn't gotten around to coming down yet. Most cats are fully capable of coming down by themselves....if kitty doesn't come down by dark, you may need to go get her as she may be attacked wild animals like a raccoon.

TEMPT HIS TASTE BUDS: Even cats in trees get hungry, and putting some of his favorite food where he can see and smell it may get him down.

MOUNT A RESCUE MISSION: If your cat is tyoo scared to come down on his own, the easiest thing to do is climb the tree and get him. If the tree is not easy to climb, get a ladder.

DON PROTECTION: A treed cat is a scared cat, and many people have been bitten and scratched trying to rescue a scared cat. Wear heavy gloves and a jacket to protect your hands and arms.

GO FOR THE NECK: When grabbing a scared cat, it's best to catch the skin on the back of her neck, This is the same place mom-kitty uses when she carries kittens...most cats will go limp once grabbed by the scruff of the neck.

MAKE IT COUNT: When grabbing a treed cat, make sure you don't miss. If you miss and don't get a good grasp, chances are he will climb higher.

CALL THE PROS: If kitty has been in the tree fort more then 24 hours and still doesn't come down and your efforts failed, it's time to call the pros....call your local Humane Society or Animal Rescue.

BUILD A STAIRCASE: If your cat frequently get 'stuck' in the same tree, you can make life easier for both of you by nailing up a few boards, this will give your climbing feline something to grab when climbing or descending.

KEEP HIM AWAY: If kitty only seems to have trouble getting down from one tree, you can try to barricade the tree, try surrounding the tree with wire mesh, just make sure it's high enough so kitty can't jump over it.

TOMORROW: DEHYDRATION

Good evening Kitties!! Today's topic is: RINGWORM!!

Just because your pet is getting bald, doesn't mean he is getting older. His coat is looking a lot like an 18-hole golf course, this is caused by a fungal infection called Ringworm!

TAKE A LITTLE OFF THE TOP: Trimming her fur around the bald spots will help prevent the fungus from spreading and also make the area easier to treat.

HAUL AWAY THE HAIR: Since Ringworm thrives on hair both on and off the pet, be sure to clean up well after giving your pet a haircut.

WASH IT WELL: To keep the "RINGS" clean and infection-free, wash them daily with an OTC antiseptic soap containing povidone iodine. This will help prevent minor fungal problems from turning into a more serious infection.

SPREAD ON PROTECTION: There re a number of OTC anti-fungal creams, liquids and ointments that are very good at controlling ringworm. For treatment to be effective, rub a small amount of the medication into the skin twice a day. Ask your vet which medication will work best for your pet.

PRACTICE PREVENTION: To eliminate ringworm and prevent it from spreading, wash your pets with anti-fungal shampoo. This not only kills any fungus that's already present, it will also prevent further infection. Get pet wet with warm water, pour on shampoo, work up a lather and leave on 15 minutes to give it time to work, then rinse pet well with warm water.

KEEP HER BRUSHED: To prevent ringworm from spreading, regular grooming is very important.Brushing your pet at least once a day will help remove fungal spores before they cause infection.

PROTECT HIS PALS: Since ringworm is readily spread from pet to pet, it's a good idea to keep the infected pet away from his buddies until the "RINGS" clear up.

VACUUM OFTEN: Since ringworm survives even on hair that's not on your pet, vacuuming your home often will reduce the risk of re-infection.

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: Many pets with ringworm experience nothing worse than a bald spot or 2, sometimes the infection can spread over the entire body causing large, red weepy sores..if this happens..SEE YOUR VET RIGHT AWAY. he will recommend a course of treatment for your pet.

Good afternoon Kitties. I trust you all had a pawsome Thanksgiving! Today's topic is: MANGE!!

It sounds like a disease associated with junkyard dogs, but even pampered pets can get mange, and it doesn't make for a pretty pet. Mange causes small red hairless areas on pets body that causes oozing!! Mange occurs when mite burrow under the skin, so here are a few tips to help your pet!

DOUSE IT WITH A DIP: Pets with scabies often get intensely itchy. It's like having mosquito bites on top of mosquito bites. Soaking your pet in a lime/sulfer medication, such as Lymdyp, diluted with water will kill the mites and help relieve itching. This dip is available at: Kennel Vet, PO Box 835, Belmore, NY 11710. Dip your pet for 10-15 minutes..do not rinse and do not towel dry. The dip must stay on your pets fur in order to work.

DON'T NEGLECT OTHER PETS: If you have more then one pet with scabies, chances are good your other pets may get it, too. You have to assume they've been exposed so you should treat them.

DO THE LAUNDRY: While mites spend their entire lives on the host animal, some might slip off and return to cause trouble another day. Be sure to wash your pets bedding or any area in which she sleeps.

FIGHT IT WITH FAR: Fatty acid supplements are fairly popular to use on skin disorders. Supplements are available at Pet stores nationwide.

KEEP HIM CLEAN: Regular grooming will help remove scaly skin and scabs caused by mange. Done regularly, it can also keep your pet mange-free.

FEED HER WELL: Since mange often affects pets that are poorly nourished, giving your pet a quality food can help provide protection, a better diet mean a healthier pet.

FORGO MOTOR OIL: Pouring motor oil on your pet is a passed-down home remedy for mange and it does NOT work. In fact, since pets will lick the oil, it can be harmful. So leve the motor oil in garage.

WHEN TO SEE HER VET: If your pet sudden;y starts going bald because of mange, it means he has a serious problem. When you notice those red, balding area's on your pet, take him to the vet for treatment.

Hi Ammie and family,
Thank you for visiting my page to honor my furry sister, Angel Angel. Mom hadn't realized it had been a year already since Angel passed away. That day was sad. Mom & daddy went to the store and when they came home, Angel was dead. She was adopted from our Humane Society on the same day they adopted Angel Sienna and both of them were part of our family for about eight years. Just in less than a year we lost: Winslow, Angel, Sienna & Shadow. All of them were about 13 years old, give or take and all of us are indoor only cats.

Thank you again for honoring our Angel. Purrs and hugs, Alexi and family

We just got on CC and learned that Sabrina crossed the Rainbow Bridge. We visited her page right behind you, dear Ammie. I know she was ill and I know she was 19, but my heart and Mom's heart ache for her Mom Debra. She will feel the emptiness for a long time, and yet, Mom and I believe that the bond of love can never be broken. I know Angel Yum Yum will take care of her, and I asked my Angel Daddy to find her and hold her. I'll just stay here a while and hold your paw, if it's OK with you. Good afternoon kitties. Today's topic is: DEPRESSION!!!

No one greets you at the door. The rattle of the leash goes un-noticed. Even the scent of food doesn't get Fido or Fluffy coming. It's not uncommon for pets to come down with depression! Causes might be from illness, loneliness, losing a friend or seasonal.

MAKE EVERY DAY A PLAY DAY: Throwing yourself into some wholehearted play with your pet is perhaps the best way for her to take her mind off her troubles. Get on the floor, tickle her tummy and just be silly.

INCLUDE HIM IN YOUR FUN: If you've recently had a new baby, don't separate the baby from the pet, instead include him in the fun, allow your pet to sniff baby and lay with baby. If you pay too much attention to baby and ignore pet, you are asking for problems.

PLANT SURPRISES: Try hiding some of her favorite treats so she has to 'hunt' for them, this will give Fido or Fluffy to do instead of sitting around moping.

CALL HOME: Dogs and cats may feel lonely when left home alone all day. To perk up your pet, periodically call home and leave a message on the answering machine..hearing your voice will do wonders.

CHEER HER UP WITH MUSIC: Both Dogs and Cats often enjoy music and are less likely to feel depressed when something pleasant is playing. Try leaving the radio on if you are gone all day!

GIVE HIM TIME TO MOURN: It's not uncommon for pets to mourn when they lose a companion....in some cases, they can suffer deep depression. Pet's demonstrate a deep love for one another, just as people do. There is no instant cure for grief, give your pet plenty of time to mourn, give him plenty of love and attention as soon he will bounce back!

BRING HOME A NEW FRIEND: While it's not possible to 'replace' a friend, many pets will feel better when another furry friend joins the home, it will give them another companion to play with.

FOR CATS ONLY:
GIVE A ROOM WITH A VIEW: Without a lot of stimulation, many cats get bored and depressed. To help Fluffy stay entertained, make sure she has a window sill or a cat perch. She can watch birds, butterflies and even people and kitty will be entertained for hours.

FOR ADDED ENTERTAINMENT: Put a bird feeder outside her fave perching window, many kitties will watch the ongoing show for many hours.

TOMORROW: MANGE

~Best Thanksgiving~ By Joanna Fuchs

Thanksgiving is here, so our minds have turned
To what time has taught us, to what we've learned:
We often focus all our thought
On shiny things we've shopped and bought.
We take our pleasure in material things,
Forgetting the pleasure that friendship brings.
If a lot of our stuff just vanished today,
We'd see the foundation of each happy day
Is special relationships, constant and true,
And that's when our thoughts go directly to you.
We wish you a Thanksgiving you'll never forget,
Full of love and joy—your best one yet!

Good evening kitties. Today's topic: FIGHTING. Suggested by my sister, KALI!

Every night your cat goes out looking for trouble--and comes back looking he tangled with a blender. While fighting is scary to watch and dangerous for the combatants, it's extremely common!

DON'T GET IN THE MIDDLE: Dogs and cats in the heat of battle aren't discriminating about what or who they bite. Many owners have been mauled while trying to break up a fight, so keep your hands clear. If you feel you must break up a fight, throw a blanket over them, this will protect your hands.

GO DEEP & LOUD: When you see a fight brewing, interrupt the aggression with the loudest, deepest "NO" you can muster. Pets associate a low-pitched voice with a threatening growl and will take it more seriously.

GIVE THEM A BLAST: If the squabble occurs in the vicinity of a garden hose, turn it on your fighting pets...this will "cool" them off.

SIT OUT MINOR BRAWLS: When dogs or cats meet, you can expect a certain amount of posturing, hissing, growling, or tussling. In most cases it is their way of getting acquainted. Even if they start squabbling, chances are the ruckus will calm down in a minute or 2.

FOR CATS ONLY!!

GIVE THEM SEPARATE QUARTERS: Bringing a new cat into the family can raise tension for both the newcomer and the the resident cat. To keep fights to a minimum, provide separate litter boxes, and feed them in separate rooms til they get used to each other.

PROVIDE AN EASY EXIT: When bringing 2 cats together for the 1st time, make sure there is an escape route. This will help prevent them from feeling trapped.

GET THEM IN TWOS: If you want to have 2 or more cats, get them at the same time as kittens. Cats that grow up together are less likely to fight then those they meet later in life.

KEEP THEM INDOORS: If you really love your cat[s] keep her indoors...if you must put them outdoors, build an outdoor enclosure or kitty playground!

TOMORROW: DEPRESSION!

Good afternoon kitties!!! Today's topic is all about those nasty UTI's. Suggested by HT Jesse cause he gets them!!!

She used to go all day without a break, but lately your pent-up pet can hardly wait to go outside. And no sooner does she got out and she wants back in, then has to go out again. UTI's aren't just the 'bane' of bathroom hopping humans, kitties and dogs can get them, too. UTI's make it difficult to urinate. What's more, the inside of the urinary tract can get painfully inflamed.

POUR SOME JUICE: It's a home remedy for people that also works for pets. Cranberry juice, orange juice and other citrus juices boost the acidity of urine, reducing the number of bacteria and helping relieve discomfort. The problem with juices is getting your pet to actually drink it. Try mixing an ounce in with her breakfast food. You can TRY to put out a bowl and see what happens.

PROVIDE FREQUENT POTTY BREAKS: When urine remains in the bladder for a long time, any bacteria that happen to be floating around have more time to multiply, causing infection levels to rise. A pet that only urinates 2 times a day will more likely develop an infection more then one that goes 10 times a day.

ASK FOR ASSISTANCE: DOGS ONLY: Your dog may have great control, but if the only time she gets to go outside is before work and after work, bacteria have plenty of time to do their dirty work. If you can't get home during the day perhaps you can ask a neighbor to let her out for you.

GET THOSE PAWS MOVING: Most dogs and cats can't go around the block without making a deposit. Taking at least two 20 minute walks a day will increase urination and reduce the risk of infection.

WHEN TO SEE HER VET: While most UTI's will clear up on their own even without treatment, occasionally bacteria will swim upstream, causing a dangerous kidney infection.
Symptoms of Kidney infection include frequent or difficult urination and possible blood in the urine. Some pets get feverish and lethargic.
Don't take chances if you notice any changes in your pets normal urinary habits. She may need oral antibiotics to prevent a small infection form turning into a major problem.

Follow the Vets advice and always follow label instructions on any medication..The best time to give antibiotics is right after urination.

Keep them suggestions coming in!! Tomorrow: EAR MITES

Good afternoon kitties!!! Today's topic is "EYES" have it, part 2: VISION PROBLEMS!!!

Your pet has always been a sure-footed beast, but lately she's been bumping into things and looking lost. For some reason your pet's sharp vision has faded.

DON'T PLAY MUSICAL CHAIRS: Moving furniture can confuse dim-sighted animals and even cause injuries. if your cat is playing and barrels into a table leg for example, put your furniture back where it was.

SHOW HIM AROUND: If you do move your furniture around, lead him around on a leash for a day or two to help him find his way. It is also a good idea to confine him to one room until he knows it well. Once he is familiar with the layout, switch him to a different room, most pets love to be around people, so be sure you stay in the room an hour for a few times daily so your pet doesn't feel alone.

BE PREDICTABLE: Stability is important for poorly sighted animals. Leaving their food and water in the same place will help give her a sense of order and security. The same goes for her litterbox, bed and toy box. The less you change things the better.

GIVE HER A LEASH ON LIFE: If your pet has even the slightest trouble seeing, do not allow her to be outside alone without a leash, she will be scared and frightened and may run away or get hit by a car.

IF YOU HAVE A POOL: Pools can be dangerous for pets that can't see where they are going. I have seen blind people fall into pools, so guard your pet by putting a fence around the pool or keep her on a leash.

TRY A NEW HAIRDO: If your pet has vision problems and her hair is in her eyes, trim them away. Too much hair can hinder their vision.

WHEN TO VISIT THE VET: Animals have the uncanny ability to adapt to a new world, they have fine-tuned senses, if their sight goes, their sense of hearing magnifies.

If your pet suddenly doesn't sleep on your bed, or is bumping into furniture, or slow to move when called, however, her vision may be impaired. Call your vet to make an appt. and he will run vision tests to see how advanced the vision problem is and recommend treatment.

Good morning kitties! Today: The "EYES" have it: "EYE IRRITATIONS"

Your cats is spending more time pawing her crusty eyes then playing with her catnip toys. One of the most common eye problems in pets is conjunctivitis. {Our AJ had this}. Also know as 'pink-eye', it is an inflammation of the membrane covering the inside of the eyelids and the front of the eye.

WIPE IT OUT: To speed healing and make your pet more comfortable, you'll want to clean the discharge from her eyelids. Wet a wet cloth or a cotton ball with warm water, squeeze it out and gently wipe the 'goop' from around your pets eye. Repeat twice daily or as often as needed.

TRY A SCRUB: Instead of using water, you may want to try to OTC eye scrub. Eye scrubs are pH Balanced and may cause less stinging then water. You can buy eye scrubs at your local pet retailer, ones made for humans can be more harsh for your pet.

HELP HIM SHED SOME TEARS: While eye scrubs can help keep the lids clean, you'll also want to wash the surface of the eye. A Good way to do this is with artificial tears, which can help wash away particles that may be causing the problem.

CODDLE HER WITH A COMPRESS: Covering your pets eyes with a damp warm compress can be very soothing. Wet a soft cloth in lukewarm water, wring it out and gently hold it across her eyes for five minutes. This can make your pets eyes feel much better, and it goes a long way toward keeping her eyes clean.

TAKE HIM TO THE BARBER: Regular grooming can help prevent eye irritations before they get started. Fur in your pets eyes can cause irritation that can lead to conjunctivitis if its matted up around the corners of the eye. Brushing the hair back away from the eyes or getting a groomer to cut off the excess hair will prevent irritations.

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: While conjunctivitis isn't difficult to treat, and eye infection can result in permanent damage, so you'll want to see vet at the 1st sign of problems...he may give you eye drops, or an ointment for the eye or a mild antibiotic if the eye is infected. {our Vet gave AJ an ointment to use 2 times daily}

KELSEES KAT REMEDIES
Good afternoon. Today's topic: ARTHRITIS!!!

Is your once graceful cat shuffling around like Walter Brennan? Arthritis can be a real pain in the neck, hip, elbow, back, or anywhere it strikes. There are many types of arthritis and the one most likely to strike your pet is Osteoarthritis. Also called degenerative joint disease.

LIGHTEN HIS LOAD: Heavy pets are considerably more likely to suffer joint pain than their trimmer counterparts. Putting "Fluffy" on a diet is one of the best things you can do for her. Being slim reduces the stress on the joints snd can provide relief.

PUT HIS BEST PAW FORWARD: Regular exercise is vital to controlling the progression of arthritis. Try to take your pet on a walk 3 times a day for 20 minutes. Many cats really like going for walks, although they insist on which way they want to go, unlike a dog.

If you do not have a leash-trained cat, play vigorously with him for 20 minutes, 3 times a day. If 20 minutes seems too long and your pet is limping along, take him home and try shorter walks or play periods.

LET HIM SLEEP INSIDE: When it's cold and damp outside, your arthritic pet is going to hurt. So if he is an outdoors sleeper, bring him in during cold damp nights, your pet will reward you.

MAKE A COZY BED: If your pet sleeps on a hard surface, she will get some relief if you switch her to a soft cozy bed instead. In the cold damp climates you might consider a heated pet bed, available at most local pet retailers.

RAISE HIS TABLE: If your pet has a stiff neck, try putting his food and water bowls off the floor so he doesn't have to lower his head at mealtimes...food bowl stands are available at local pet stores.

HELP HER BE A SOCIAL CLIMBER: If you pet has trouble with stairs, you may want to install a ramp to help him go up and down without assistance.

TRY THE TOWEL TRICK: If your pet is having trouble walking, you can help her out by slinging a towel beneath his belly and using it to help him stand.

FOR DOGS ONLY: {I KNOW MANY OF YOU HAVE DOGS}
BUFFER IT WITH OTC: Give your DOG buffered aspirin, it can be a great help with arthritis pain. Experts recommend 1/4 of a 325-milligram tablet per 10 pounds of dog twice a day.

NEVER GIVE ASPIRIN TO A CAT. It can irritate the stomache.

TOMORROW: Spraying!!{pew, what stinks?}

KELSEES KAT REMEDIES
Good afternoon. Today we are discussing DEAFNESS. I can hear well, and I sure hope all of you can as well, but in case you have a hard time!!!

Some cats {and dogs} are born deaf. Others lose their hearing with age or chronic ear infections. Fortunately, with a little extra care, your pet can manage well.

Do they perk up their ears at the sound of their name, can they hear the doorbell, the sound of a can opening, if you notice any of these signs that used to get kitty{or doggie} running and all of sudden, nothing...your worst fear has been has been confirmed, she is not being stubborn, she is deaf.

GIVE HER A LEASH ON LIFE: Always take a deaf pet outdoors on a leash. They cannot hear predators or traffic noises, but you can, so leash her up to avoid any trouble or danger!

PRACTICE PATIENCE: Living with a deaf pet can be a challenge. They're often harder to train and may not play with you as often. You really need to show kindness and patience and it will pay off. Realize that you deaf pet wants to make things normal as much as you do, so be will willing to work gently to help her out.

TRY A NEW LANGUAGE: Your pet cannot hear your commands, but it is possible for them to see them. Hand signals are an excellent way to work with deaf dogs, Even cats that are deaf can benefit from a little signal training. Your vet can recommend a trainer to work with you and your pet.

LEAD HIM BY THE NOSE: Both dogs & cats have a keen sense of smell. In many cases you can summon them by creating olfactory waves---waving fish nibbles or a piece of dried liver through the air. Once your pet gets a whiff, he will realize you want him to come and will be right there.

BE ON TAP: To get your pets attention when she's sleeping or not looking in your direction, walk in front of her and tap her gently. A Deaf animal cannot hear the normal cues that someone is approaching. DO NOT run in the direction of the animal without warning, you will scare her.

SHOW HIM THE LIGHTS: At night, flashing the lights can help get your pets attention. As soon as she looks up, give her the hand signal that tell her what you want her to do {sit, stay, etc}. Then after the pet does what you want, reward her with love or a treat. Eventually your pet will come to realize when you flash the outside lights it is time to come in.

GET A COMPANION: Even if your deaf pet can't hear a stranger at the door, she can get clues from a companion. Dogs for instance will see the companion running to door and will follow. A deaf cat may watch her companion to see when it's time to eat or if someone is coming into the room...companion pets can be invaluable.

TODAYS Part 2 will be posted on the CMR ONLY! It is "When to see the VET"

Good afternoon. Today's topic is 'BEGGING". Who amongst us begs for mom's food??? Ummm!!!

FEED HER FIRST: If your cat is really full, she won't be inspired to ask for more. {Wanna bet?}

DON'T GIVE INTO GUILT: No matter how much he manipulates your emotions with those sad eyes, remind yourself that kitty has been fed and doesn't need human food.

MAKE HER LEAVE FOR LEFTOVERS: If you decide to slip her a snack, don't do it from the table. Otherwise kitty will begin confusing your mealtime with hers. Always put leftover pieces for kitty in her bowl.

LAY DOWN THE LAW: Usually just raising your voice will send your cat scurrying off in a different direction, if that doesn't work, blow a bike horn or rattle a can full of coins...this will send her dashing to another room.

SAY IT WITH SPRAY: Cats can be incorrigible beggars, even jumping on tables and stealing food when you won't hand it over. To discourage this brazen behavior, surprise your cat with a blast from a spray bottle. Most cats hate water and will jump from the table and run.

ISOLATE THE PROBLEM: When your cat is driving you crazy, tell him "NO" and calmly put him in another room and shut the door til dinner is over. You may get complaints of meowing, but don't let him out until you are done eating.

Good luck kitties!! Mom has already spoiled us and we always beg {me and Jesse}

Today's topic: BAD STINKY BREATH!!!

ATTACK THE PLAQUE: Think about how your mouth would smell if you didn't brush your teeth for a few days, much less a few years.
Brushing twice a day would be ideal, but twice a week is sufficient.

START 'EM YOUNG: Brushing your cats teeth may sound like a scene in a horror flick, but if you begin when kitty is just a few months old, the experience can quickly become a pleasant one.

HOW TO BRUSH: Begin by gently handling and stroking your cats mouth for a few minutes a day. After a few days, lift up her lip on one side and with a piece of gauze on your finger, begin brushing in a circular motion on the outer surface of a few teeth. Do this each day by adding more teeth and eventually you will be able to use a miniature brush available in pet stores..be sure it is soft bristled and designed only for pets.

TICKLE THEIR TASTE BUDS: Some pet toothpastes come in flavors like poultry, beef or malt to make the experience more palatable for your pet. DO NOT USE HUMAN TOOTHPASTE THAT FOAMS! Pets cannot spit, and if they swallow the foam, it gives them upset stomachs.

REACH FOR A SPRAY: If your cat doesn't take kindly to having his teeth brushed, reach for a spray. Many pet stores sell mouth sprays for pets which do the same as minty sprays humans use. They are purely cosmetic.

CAN THE CANNED FOOD: Switching to a dry kibble may help to improve mouth odor, because it scrapes the surface of the teeth.

RICE TO THE OCCASION: Whole grains, like cooked brown rice, can help food move along the digestive tract more readily. Better digestion plays a role in better breath. We recommend adding a small portion of rice to your pets regular diet on a daily basis.

SCRAP THE SCRAPS: Breath often reflects the diet, if you're feeding your cat things like leftover spaghetti flavored with garlic, you have found the source of the stinky breath.

GO FOR GREEN: Chlorophyll tablets, available in pet stores, can aid digestion and sweeten your cats breath.

TOMORROW: BEGGING!!!

Hi Ammie & Mom & Angel YumYum!
Thank you for the condolences on my furfathers crossing. Grandma is still having a hard time about it. She misses seeing him.
Baby J the next morning wakes up and checks his tummy to make sure he still has his fluff on. He does and is happy. He walks out of the tickle monsters cave singing a song,about he had a date and she wasnt late and that the tickle monster was great. Midnight is up along with the rest of the family preparing a breakfast. The newborns are in their highchairs having their breakfast. The apartment door flies open and in walk Savannah and CloudStorm. The newborns upon seeing this scramble from their highchairs rush over to see their mommy and daddy being home! Savannah drops her bags and scoops up her babies. The newborns are squealing with delight. Cloudstorm says he could use some help with the other bags. Baby J and Grandpa rush to go help him. The newborns are excited to show their mom the halloween decorations. Savannah is quite pleased on how the apartment looks. CloudStorm, Baby J and Grandpa come in with bags and the girls start putting the groceries away. Savannah announces they are going to have a fashion show after breakfast and the newborns are going to showing off the new clothing they got. Later the girls are going out to pick out costumes. Breakfast is served and everyones served and everyone hurries up to eat. They are excited about the fashion show. Breakfast is done and the dishes are cleared away and washed. KELSEES KAT REMEDIES {part 2}
HELP THE KIDS UNDERSTAND: Like people, many elderly pets get a bit cranky and intolerant of interruption. While your senior kitty will probably slink away from any hubbub in the house, you may need to ask the kids to be especially considerate of the elderly dog. A lot of times children don't recognize the early signs of grumpiness and will get bitten.

SLIP HER A SUPPLIMENT: In lieu of snacks, many vets 'reward' their patients with a pet vitamin. They are not high in calories, and they have ingredients that make them flavorable to pets. Pet stores carry a variety of chewable pet vitamins.

SLIP THEM SOME ANTOOXIDENTS: In humans, studies have shown that daily doses of the antioxident vitamins C & E can help protect against heart disease. Cats can take 500 milligrams a day of vitamin C and 50 units of Vitamin E. Check with your Vet for precise dosing instructions. For cats, try mixing the vitamins with a little canola or olive oil and smearing the mixture on her paws, your cat will just lick it off.

KELSEES KAT REMEDIES
Good afternoon..mom is still feeling crappy, but she knows I need to do this. Today's topic: THE AGING FELINE! Suggested by my Angel sis, A Shadow!

It seems like only yesterday your cat was a cuddly ball of fur endlessly romping around and playing. Most cats live on average 15-16 years, but there are plenty of 20+ year old felines out there. Many kitties stay healthy as Seniors, but many succumb to illness.

BEGIN WITH REGULAR VET VISITS: Once your cat enters her middle years, it's a good idea to take her to the Vet at least once a year. When you take kitty to the Vet for her first "Senior" checkup, your vet may recommend that she have a comprehensive exam that tells how she will feel as she ages.

KEEP THOSE PAWS MOVING: Daily exercise will help keep your kitty slim and flexible, helping stave off age-related disorders like arthritis or digestive problems.

WATCH HIS WEIGHT: The #1 problem in the pet population is obesity. How to tell if kitty is overweight: They should stay fairly sleek throughout their lives. If you can't feel his ribs or see his waist, he is more then likely overweight.

SWITCH TO HEALTHY TREATS: Giving your pets little snacks seems to be part of the 'animal/human' bond. But if your cat is elderly or overweight you could be killing her with kindness. Carrot sticks are a healthy treat, although you might have a hard time convincing your cat that a carrot is just as tasty as a liver treat.

KEEP THE WATER BOWL FULL: Many cats naturally drink less as they age, which can cause dehydration. try keeping water bowls in every room, this is important, especially if your kitty isn't getting around as easily as he used to.

KEEP HER CLOSE: As they age, many animals begin losing their hearing, making them vulnerable to accidents. Keep an older animal outside on a leash..you will need to become their ears and take more precautions on their behalf.

CHANGE DIETS CAREFULLY: Cats don't like changes in their daily routine, and changing to a new food cause them to sulk and leave the table for a few days. There is m ore at stake then being hungry, since cats that don't eat can develop a serious, possibly fatal condition called Hepatic Lipidosis. You need to change your cats diets slowly. At first, give her no more than 1/4 of the new food added to her old food, ..add a little more each day over a 2-week period of time, or perhaps longer.

KEEP KITTY WARM & COMFY: It is important to keep elderly cats warm and comfy. Give them an old blanket to cuddle in or make their bed close to the heat source or try purchasing a heated kitty bed, available at Pet Stores.

PART 2--next blog!

Keep those suggestions coming in. TOMORROW: STINKY BREATH

Good afternoon. Today we are discussing TAPEWORMS. Nobody suggested it, so I just decided to do it. Had to go online and research this.

WHAT ARE TAPEWORMS: Tapeworms are the most common internal parasite in adult cats. They live in the small intestines, and vary in length from less than 1" to several feet. The scolex {head} of the parasite fastens itself to the wall of the gut using hooks and suckers. The body is composed of segments that contain egg packets. To eliminate tapeworm infection, the head must be destroyed. Otherwise the worm will regenerate.

The body segments containing the eggs are passed in the feces. These are called proglottids. Fresh moist segments are capable of moving. They are about .25" long. Occasionally, you might see them in the fur around your cat's anus or in her stool. When dry, they resemble grains of rice.

TAPEWORM SPECIES: There are 2 common species found in cats; both are transmitted by an intermediate host. DIPYLIDIUM CANINUM is acquired from fleas or lice that harbor immature tapeworms in their intestines. These insects acquire the parasite by eating tapeworm eggs. The cat MUST bite or swallow the insect to become infested. The tapeworm TAENIA TEANIAFORMIS is acquired by eating rodents, uncooked meats, raw freshwater fish, or discarded animal parts.

TREATMENT: Praziquantal is one of the most effective medications for both common specials. Other suitable treatments are Fenbendazole and Espiprantal. Use only under Veternary guidance. Deworming must be combined with control of fleas and lice, in the case of DIPYLIDIUM CANINUM, and by preventing roaming and hunting in the case of other tapeworms.

TOMORROW: CLAW PROBLEMS. Keep them suggestions coming in.

Oh my goodness ...
... we've had so much going in that I've not been keeping in touch with dear furriends like you. Mom and Dad spent some time in Texas earlier in the year visiting with Mom's sister who had terminal cancer. She is in heaven now, and I noticed her kitty has crossed the Rainbow Bridge in the opposite direction, joining his furrever mom in people heaven.

After that, the pawrents flew to Illinois to visit with family members they've not seen in years. They got nearly to Chicago's O'Hare Airport when a massive storm shut everything down. The plane diverted to Des Moines Iowa overnight. Dad get them a room and a car ... the next day they drove 10 hours to reach family members in Southern Illinois. If they'd waited till noon and taken the flight to Chicago, they'd have been stuck at the airport for days due to flooding ... would not have been able to see all their family. It all worked out for the best.

Coming home, they got notice by email at 4 a.m. that their return flight had cancelled. Dad got them one for early afternoon, and they headed to O'Hare Airport. When Dad checked on other flights to the west coast, he was told they'd put them on a wait list, but there were already about 50 people on the list ... for every flight to the coast. Mom and Dad had a nice lunch, Mom walked about a mile up and down the concourse to get her exercise, and they got on the plane at 1:30 p.m. It actually got them home. Mom could not believe they didn't end up in Montreal or New Mexico ... she almost kissed the ground when they arrived home.

Dad's sister is now in a facility for people with Alzheimer's. The pawrents have dealt with a few other things, but Mom is finally online and visiting those near and dear to my heart.

I hope all is well with you. Please forgive me for not being here sooner and more often. Dropping off a vote, purrs and whisker tickles, and some tuna treats I baked myself. A.Q. Cherish and Mom June.

Mom and I haven't been feeling so well lately and we have not been very active on CC but we miss everyone. Our CC family is always in our thoughts.
I had a great birthday. Mom and Dad gave me tuna treats along with lots of cuddles and a new catnip toy.
I'm having antibiotics to help me with an infection in my skin and although I don't like them at all, they are making me feel better.
Thank you for your friendship, lovely blogs, goodies and nice gifts! You are the best friends in the whole world!

Hi kitties. Today my topic is on DANDRUFF. Suggested by: LUKE & CASER

TAKE THE PLUNGE: Since dandruff is a sign of flaky skin, giving your cat regular baths will help wash the flakes away before the accumulate. To bathe your pet, use warm{NOT hot} water. Use a mild shampoo like baby shampoo and massage it well into your pets skin. Rinse thoroughly and dry him well.

FOR CATS: The BIG struggle isn't getting rid of the dandruff, it's getting them into the bath in the 1st place..{How true} For tips on bathing kitties.....OK..this will be part 2 today!

GO FOR MORE POWER: If baby shampoo doesn't help, try using a pet dandruff shampoo that contains sulfur or salicylic acid. Leave the later in place for about 5 minutes to the give the active ingredients time to work. You can buy medicated pet shampoos at most Pet store retailers. DO NOT use medicated shampoos intended for humans because they can be harmful for pets.

ADD OATMEAL TO BATH: The same colloidal oatmeal{Aveeno} that people use for dry skin can also relieve flaking skin in pets. Aveeno is marvelous for pets with dandruff because it moisturizes dry skin.

GIVE HIM A SPRITZ: If you live in a dry climate, spraying your cat's coat with an oil rinse will help lubricate the skin and lock in moisture. This is available in most pet stores.

GIVE KITTY THE BRUSH OFF: Grooming your cat regularly helps distribute natural oils evenly over dry skin, which will help keep dandruff down. Choose a brush that is not too harsh.

CHECK THE OIL: Sometimes we'
ll see dandruff when animals aren't getting enough fat in their diets. Giving your kitty fish-oil supplements will help improve metabolism of fats in skin tissue. Try mixing 1/2- 1 tsp of fish oil into your cats food daily. You can also use sunflower oil.

UPGRADE HER DIET: Some generic pet foods do not provide the full range of vitamins and minerals your pet needs to maintain healthy skin.

PART 2-HOW TO GIVE KITTY A BATH is only posted on the CMR. {Thanks}

TOMORROW: TAPEWORM. Keep the suggestions coming in.
