Oahu ...
Lovely Hawaiian ladies place leis on our necks as we disembark in Honolulu. These are a special gift of aloha - welcome, and love. The ladies receive those made of white ginger or jasmine … our choice. I love jasmine; my choice is simple. Oh, the beautiful fragrance. No wonder everyone wants one of these when in Hawaii. For the men, there are leis of kukui nuts. With our shirts and dresses from Hilo Hatties, we are ready to explore the final island of our Hawaiian adventure.

Here, Hawaii’s timeless beauty blends with the modern luxuries of today. We can swim in the warm waters of world-famous Waikiki one moment, then enjoy the dramatic mountain views of the Nuuanu Pali Lookout another; watch the surfers on the legendary North Shore by day, then dance the night away in vibrant nightlife spots around Honolulu; get a taste of local flavors in Kapahulu one night, then dine at a Five Diamond Hawaii Regional Cuisine restaurant the next.

Our first visit is to 350 acre Diamond Head crater, one of the best-known volcanic craters in the world, whose vantage point offers some incredible panoramas of Honolulu. We choose to start early to avoid the heat of the sun. Diamond Head State Monument encompasses over 475 acres, including the interior and outer slopes of the crater. This broad, saucer-shaped crater was formed about 300,000 years ago during a single, explosive eruption that sent ash and fine particles in the air. As these materials settled, they cemented together into a rock called tuff. The panoramic views of Waikiki and Oahu's south shore from the top are impressive. We will have many gorgeous photos for our memory books. We learn the crater was named Diamond Head by 19th century British sailors who thought they discovered diamonds on the crater's slopes. These "diamonds" were actually shiny calcite crystals that had no value. The volcanic crater, a major Oahu landmark, has been extinct for 150,000 years.

Next we travel to Iolani Palace, the only royal palace in the US. It was the official residence of King Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani, the last king and queen to rule Hawaii; the monarchy was abolished in 1893. We take the guided tour, which leaves us thinking our own Castle on CC is just as impressive and much more inviting to fun-loving kitties.

Time for an island luau dinner and then to bed as tomorrow we head to Pearl Harbor. See pics of Diamond Head and the palace on my page.

Come visit me, Q. Cherish - COTM March 2012.

Molokai
Serene seascapes, unspoiled coastlines, untamed wilderness. We visit Molokai & travel back to a timeless place. This is an island that stays true to its Hawaiian traditions - tucked away from the hustle of the outside world; where no building is taller than a coconut tree; there’s no traffic & no traffic lights; where you can feel the power of Hawaiian culture from an area near Maunaloa, said to be the birthplace of hula, to the natural wonders of Halawa Valley.

Molokai is only 38 miles long and 10 miles across at its widest point. It is a friendly & family-oriented island that has deep connections with its Hawaiian ancestors. Unlike the visitor industry on the larger Hawaiian Islands, Molokai has preserved its true Hawaiian culture. More than one third of this island's residents have over 50% Hawaiian blood. Molokai residents farm, fish, hunt & gather many of their basic needs & they enjoy this lifestyle. Here we need to slow down, be less demanding, & respect the Molokai way of life. Molokai is the real deal. We are visiting the true Hawaii. We will enjoy & respect Molokai & her people.

Lining the northeast coast are the towering cliffs of the North Shore Pali. At 3,600 to 3,900 feet from sea base to top, they are the tallest sea cliffs in the world; their near-vertical plunge ends 2000 feet below sea level. We step cautiously to the edge to peek over. Whoa, that’s a drop! Later in the day, we do some ocean kayaking along the face of the cliffs; this is amazing beyond belief! We also discover secret, secluded beaches, sea birds, & cascading waterfalls which provide incredible, photogenic scenery

We then hike into the East End’s classic cathedral valley to see Hawaii back in time. It is believed ancient Polynesians settled in lush Halawa Valley as early as 650 AD. This area, half a mile wide and three to four miles deep, and blessed with beautiful vistas and towering waterfalls, is one of the island's most historic areas. Roughly two miles up the trail is the impressive, double-tiered 250-foot Moa’ula Falls. If you’re considering taking a dip into the pool, drop a ti leaf into the water first. Hawaiian legend says that a giant moo (lizard) lives at the bottom of the pool. If the ti leaf sinks, the moo is in no mood for visitors. If the ti leaf floats, it’s safe to enter. Our ti leaves are forming a veritable flotilla, and we slip gratefully into the refreshing pool. Soon we are splashing and playing like … well, kitties.

We have been invited to a luau by the residents of a small village near Maunaloa, birthplace of the hulu. After dining on succulent roast pig, and all the tasty side dishes, we are given grass skirts to put on for a hula lesson. Soon we are dancing and telling the stories of the island, looking almost like natives.

Tomorrow we will head for the island of Oahu, where our Hawaiian adventure will eventually finish.

Come visit me, Q. Cherish - COTM March 2012.

Hi A Jes & Fursibs
We had yet another pawsome day today. It was in the 70's and we got to outside when mom got up. There was a breezy wind, but not high winds, and lots and lots of sunshine.

Mom weeded her yard today and pulled everyone she could find and then she sprayed them so they won't grow back. Mom said if flowers grew as fast as weeds, her flowers would be in full bloom by now...MOL.

Mom is BBQing everynight now and we get to eat some too, our faves are pork chops and chicken, so mom usually makes a little extra for us...grilled food is the best.

Mom lets us stay outside til 8:30 or so then she brings us in and feeds us and we all go to sleep after that, me & Jesse sleep on moms bed with her.'

We were not at MHL last night cause mom went to her sisters house for a BBQ and did not come home til 8:37, then had to feed us and love on us..so it was too late then.

Hope you have a pawsome evening!

Hi Angel Jes & Fursibs
I'm back, did you miss me??? We had no heat all weekend so mom stayed in her room with the oil heater and her electric blanket watching TV.

Our gas was off since late FRI night we guess. It was on FRI during the day, but we woke up on Caturday and it was cold in here, mom coulodn't figure out why...she checked everything and all the gas appliances would not work, so mom had no cooking gas either...she had to eat cereal and sandwiches all weekend.

DTE came this morning and figured out the trouble...the meter went bad, they said they installed it mover 20 years ago and it just quit working, so they took the old one off and put a new one on and now we have gas again...the man had to come up and light all moms pilot lights again, too.

Yesterday mom had to go back to the ER cause she is still blocked up..they gave her an emama and made her stay there until she went, so she was there for a ong time...did not get home until after 8pm, so mom was not in the mood to take us to hockey after all that mess.

It was cold all weekend, wouldn't you know caue we had no gas, it was only in the 30's with rain and dampness and no sun. Today it is 70* and sunny, but it is very windy out...we are in and out as we feel like going...mom left her back door open for us.

Have a pawsome afternoon!

VOTE WINDY POINT ANGELS # 237234 COTD 4/5
As many of you know, 17 year old Minnie D Purrl crossed the Rainbow Bridge on Tuesday 4/2. Minnie was a member of a wonderful family of cats known as the Windy Point Gang.

We’re choosing to copy Dad Mike’s exact words that he used to tell us she had crossed--

“She was losing her battle with Hyperthyroidism and her quality of life had decreased dramatically over the last five days. This afternoon Minnie was assisted by our vet, Dr Madsen and myself on her journey. She was 17 years old when she passed.

It is particularly sad for me because Minnie had given me a litter of seven Easter Kitties when she was only 9 months old. I always celebrated Mother's Day with her on Easter. (Sigh...) This year we celebrated with some baby food that I held for her since she was too weak to stand and eat.

Minnie leaves behind her boyfriend Tiger Mann, who is the last of the original Windy Pointers...and of course, her sad Dad.”

Minnie is now a member of the Windy Point Angels #237234, those members of the Windy Point Gang who are now Angels at the Rainbow Bridge. We learned that this special group of Angels has never received their COTD badge, and we want to change that by making them our COTD winner on 4/6. Please stop by on Friday and leave some words of comfort for Dad Mike and pounce on that vote button to show your support.

Hugs and Purrs, The Green Mountain Gang

How's your mom?? Ours is still not feeling all that good today. She had a massive headache earlier, and took some pills and it finally went away.

It is cold here today, just 34*, can you believe that? In April we get a little bit of everything here, rain, snow, sleet, frost...you name it and we get it.

Happy Caturday kitties & thank you for your vote of support yesterday! I’ve been so busy with my catpaign that I almost forgot a very special day in my own life. Today is my adopty day…woohoo! Three years ago I was taken from a cage at a pet store by my sweet daddy & placed into mom’s arms. The first purr & kiss was all it took & here I am…MOL! Okay kitties, are you ready for another big day trip? This week we’re staying in the U.S. so we’re taking a charter bus driven by our own illustrious Thunderfoot aka Thundie. When the zoo staff found out I was bringing a bunch of kitties with me on this trip they said to make sure to show you this: (Trixie unrolls a sign & has Whiskers hold the other side.) *IMPORTANT NOTE*PLEASE DON'T FEED ANY OF THE ANIMALS, OR CHASE ANY OF THE NATURALLY ROAMING ANIMALS SUCH AS PEACOCKS, GEESE, THIRTEEN-LINED GROUND SQUIRRELS, AND OTHER CREATURES YOU'LL SEE AT THE ZOO.* Hmmm…it seems as though our reputations precede our arrival sweet kitties, which means they’ll be keeping a close watch on us…SIGH! Oh well, let’s climb aboard the Cyclone Express tour bus & I’ll plug in the short film about our destination. Thundie will be turning the bus north out of the parking lot because we’re going to Chicago to visit…the BROOKFIELD ZOO! Since the opening of Brookfield Zoo in 1934, the Society has had an international reputation for taking a cutting-edge role in animal care and conservation of the natural world. Among its historical firsts are indoor multispecies exhibits, zoo nutrition residencies, methods for animal husbandry, and medical care that includes successful brain surgery for a gorilla. Aware that the best way to view an animal is in its natural habitat, the Brookfield Zoo makes great efforts to recreate the native environments of its inhabitants. The Great Bear Wilderness offers one-of-a-kind vantage points for viewing bears, wolves, and bison as they roam the 7.5 acre exhibit. Spread across more than 216 acres, this zoo houses thousands of animals from around the world. Zoo residents live in specially designed, walk-through environments so visitors can view them in natural settings. You also don't want to miss the dolphins at Brookfield's Seven Seas Panorama when they put on shows daily at 11:30 & 2:30. Keep an eye out for roving naturalists who are dressed in bright green shirts. They often have "touch stations" and other things to look at and are always happy to share interesting information about the animals. Look out your windows dear furiends because we’ve arrived at the gate! I hope you’ve enjoyed my introduction to our adventure for the day.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the outstanding & warm purr-filled vote support you’re giving me for my campaign! Have a pawsome Caturday & hope you have a great time exploring the wonders of the Brookfield Zoo with me!!

Excited purrs,
Trixie

Hi Angel Jes
Yes, we're pretty happy that the hospital is so close. Dad’s only been on dialysis for about 3 weeks, so it was a little rough getting started but it’s going pretty well now. Hard to schedule things right now because dialysis takes up Tuesday & Thursday night and Sunday afternoon, and since Dad does peoples’ taxes it’s all starting right at his busy time. I know some humans are really scared of hospitals, but Mom & Dad are okay with them. Our Big Bro Joe was in the huge hospital in Vancouver for about six weeks a few years ago after a bad car accident, so Mom learned where all the secret tunnels and everything were. She’s amazed at all the things they can do there and everyone who helped Joe was just great. What part of the hospital does your Mom work in?

☆Shout-out for SASSY #171904 today so please pounce by to paw her a vote☆
Good Morning & happy Thursday everyone! Thank you for pouncing by to paw me a COTM vote yesterday! It’s hard to believe it’s already the 14th!! Okay kitties; are you ready for my next heroic animal tales? This will be my last ones to present this week because my paws are itching to pounce to something tomorrow that doesn’t require tissues, especially since we’re down to the last 4 boxes in the case. Please come down from the cat tree Mallow, Fluffinella & Steve so that your romping won’t distract our other kitty listeners again today! Boo Kitty, Thank you for your help but I think the votes are flattened pretty well so you can come out of the collection box now…MOL!
Today I’ll start with…~PERSISTANT MEOWS~ WINNIE the hero cat saved the lives of her family! A gasoline-powered water pump in the family basement caused an odorless but deadly gas to fill the house. When Winnie sensed that something was wrong, she jumped on her owners’ bed & woke them up. She jumped, nudged and meowed relentlessly as the house filled with fumes. They said that Winnie's meows were similar to screams as she persisted in getting the parents awake. Meanwhile, the couple's 14 year-old-son lie unconscious in another room due to the toxic fumes. Because of Winnie's persistence, 911 was called and the family was treated and survived. HOORAY for Winnie!! She’s a true heroine in every sense of the word & has earned my purrs of respect for her deed!
Now we move on to a more unusual tale of heroism with…~LULU THE LIFESAVING PIG~
Perhaps my favorite rescuer is a pot-bellied pig named LULU….just because she’s unique! On August 4, 1998, owner Jo Ann had a heart attack in the bedroom of her vacation trailer at a Pennsylvania lake resort. After her collapse, her American Eskimo dog began to bark, but no one was close enough to respond. Lulu can't bark, but she did something much more daring! She scrambled through a tight "doggie door," cutting her protruding stomach in the process; then waited at the side of the road until she saw a car. She then waddled to the road and lay down right in front of the car. The motorist stopped for the prone pig and got out. LuLu then led the man to the house and the rescue. The owner of Lulu heard a man screaming through her window that her pig was in distress. She answered that, in fact, it was she who was in distress, and asked him to call an ambulance. Luckily, help arrived in time: doctors said that if 15 more minutes had elapsed she likely would have died.

Hmmm…makes you think twice about eating that roast pork dinner doesn’t it? MOL! Thank you for your daily votes of support & the purrs you’ve been giving me. Each one is appreciated & held close to my heart. Have a pawsome day!

Loving purrs,
Trixie

Hi Angel Jes
Thanks for complimenting my picture! Your Mom had quite a day! Glad she had a day off before the appointment today. Our Dad goes to lots of doctors, too, luckily they're all fairly close. He just started dialysis, too, which is 15 minutes away so Mom can drop him off and come home. Before they finished the new hospital last year he would have had to go over an hour down the freeway, which can take 2 hours if the traffic's bad, you never know. Mom would have had to stay for the whole 4 - 5 hours of his treatment. We kitties would not have liked that so we say YAY! for the new hospital!! -- Evie

Good Morning & happy Wednesday dear furiends! Well we’ve got snow! Good thing we made our trip to the farm yesterday because things aren’t looking good for any road trips for me today. I really don’t mind though because I need to get even with my little sis Fluffers! Did you see what she did when we went in the barn visiting Big Jake the horse yesterday? While I was meowing about him that little scamp hid behind the bales of straw & waited until I wasn’t paying attention. Then she sprang out & jumped on my back yowling “giddy-up Trixie” & proceeded to kick me in the ribs. I guess I’m lucky she wasn’t wearing spurs! Well time to move on so off we go to today’s topic.
Do you think you’re a good mouser? Now we all like to catch mice but I dare any of you to top today’s cat record! I must say that I’m humbled by the pawsomeness of…THE WORLD’S BEST MOUSER & think you will be too! TOWSER, a long-haired tortoiseshell female, was the resident feline pest control expert at Glenturret Distillery (located on the banks of the Turret River two miles north west of Crieff in Perthshire, Scotland ) from 1963-1987 & was an officially recognized record holder. Her record breaking victim count was 28,299 mice which were laid out on the Still House floor each morning to be inspected by the stillman. The auditors for the Guinness book of records observed Towser's prowess over a number of days and her total kill count was estimated statistically. She was commemorated by a bronze statue at the visitor's center at Glenturret and her story was featured on Blue Peter (the world's longest-running children's television program). Her paw prints also decorate the label on a bottle of Fairlie's light Highland Liqueur as a tribute to the 24 year service of this illustrious kitty! Since her death she has been replaced by 2 other kitties, ginger-and-white Dylan, from Cats Protection & former stray Brooke, a semi-long-haired black and white female from Cats Protection but so far their record is nowhere near hers.*Added note* Cats Protection finds homes for around 60,000 cats every year in the UK through its nationwide network of 260 voluntary-run Branches and 29 Centers.

I told you today’s story was humbling! Can you imagine catching over 28,000 rodents in your lifetime? It sure blows my mouse catching stories into the wind…MOL! Remember I’m collecting YOUR unique talent/heroic stories to present next month if I have the honor of becoming your queen! Thank you for supporting me during my COTM campaign dear furiends! Each vote is scooped up with happy paws & a purr of love from my heart.

Snowy hugs,
Trixie

Sweet Angel Jes and Mom,
Our mom loves figure skating, too. She vaguely remembers owning a pair of ice skates when she was 5 or 6 and still living where it snowed a lot (Iowa), but she hasn't ice skated since then. She has roller skated from time to time. BUT, angels can do anything - including, I am sure, ice skating - so yes it would be fun to go skating sometime. Hope you all have a great week!

Hi Angel Jes & Fursibs
Mom is trying to figure things to do on her time off. She is sooo bored with herself. Only so much time can be spent online or using her kindle...mom paces more then anything. Today is "MacGyver" day on Cloo, so she will turn the TV on shortly and catch him.

Goodness gracious...mom has worked for over 20 years, and now to have all this time off is boring. Mom said if it was warm out, she could probably go and do something, like buy tickets to an up and coming game at the Joe...MOL...too cold to catch the bus to the Joe.

There are a lot of places mom wants to go, but it is too cold right now...they should have shut the place down in the Summer, then mom would be in Heaven...MOL!!!

It is just 30* today, but the sun is shining brightly. No wind either. It is supposed to warm up to the mid to upper 40's later in the week.

I caught my sister, Kali sleeping in my bed, can you believe that? I pawsmacked her and hissed at her and she got out and went running...hey, she has her own bed to sleep in, mom got that one for me.

Thanks for explining to us how the Coronations work. That is why we left, we were not sure what was going on. We'll stay at the next one.

Take care and see ya WED night!

There nothing like getting a late start on the day, & that’s exactly what I meowed at mom when she was checking her e-mail instead of getting my important campaign work accomplished…MOL! Thank you for the votes you pawed my way yesterday! Each one is treated like a national treasure in my memory archives & is deeply appreciated!Okay sweet kitties…I’ve told you about some of the world’s smallest animals so I think it’s only fair to devote some time to a few of the world’s largest ones. We’ll start off with a common critter that many of you have in your own homes…although probably not as big as this one…MOL!
WORLD’S BIGGEST DOG- Over the past two odd decades there have been many dogs which have been featured in the Guinness book of world records for their extremities. Leading the list of such hounds is HERCULES, an English Mastiff, which was inducted in the Guinness book of world records back in 2001 for being the world’s biggest dog, weighing 294 lbs. and having a 39 inch broad neck. Hercules was three years of age, and has paws that are the size of a softball! He may be huge, but is very well-behaved. As a puppy Hercules was large, but his owner didn’t think that he would go on to become the world’s biggest dog. As far as diet is concerned, his owner maintains categorically that he has never served Hercules with anything extraordinary and that Hercules’ size is totally natural. They have fed him what they would have otherwise fed any normal dog. Hercules is a dog that enjoys the limelight too! It was in 2001, when Hercules was declared as being the world’s biggest dog that his owner came to know about the limelight-loving nature of this pooch. Hercules would go wagging to the interviewers and in front of the cameras, which made him a lovable animal to everyone he met. He was featured on many news and daily shows, and was even featured in a few commercial ads. Whatever it was, the world’s biggest dog was willing to try out new things, much to the surprise and approval of its owners. Later on, due to his loving nature, the world largest dog was doing shows and was booked for various birthday parties. He was also allowed to meet and get photos shot with children who came to see him from around the world. Hercules, in true sense, stands as a testimony to the phrase “the gentle giant”!

WOW…I’m SO glad that our family dog Sammie didn’t want to achieve a world record as one of the biggest dogs. I feel small compared to her as it is so can only imagine looking up to one the size of a Shetland pony…MOL! Tomorrow we’ll be heading to to see another world record holder but this one lives on a farm so wear your jeans & mud boots! Thank you so much for your loving votes of support for my campaign. Have a pawsome day dear furiends!

Big hugs & a tuna filled vote,
Trixie

Hi Angel Jes
Well, hopefully Sandra WON'T growl at Shayna forever, but it could happen. We had a good time at the coronation, even if we had to leave early. Our brother Mike and his wife Lady Dolly were dancing all night, too, out there with Angel Aria & AJ.

We're going to get over to hockey now, but probably won't be able to stay too long tonight. Hope Mom enjoys the skating show. See you Wednesday! -- Evie

Hey Friends
We are trying to get out to visit friends, but CC is giving us a hard time. All is well with us. Mom finally got a new charger for the camera, so may get around to posting new pictures, we hope! Also those of past kitties, to go with K.Barney's stories. We kitties are still waiting to see if she finds the old charger, but no telling where we hid it! Mom also has a doctor appt tomorrow to check her blood sugar. She is also a bit concerned about her heart, so we are asking prayers that its nothing serious, just seems to beat faster than normal sometimes, when it shouldn't. She has tried cutting down on caffeine, but not willing to give it up entirely. By the way, she got some good walking shoes and now her knee is much better! Still sore, but not that severe pain she was having! Her back even feels better. Hope it continues!

By the way, Zeus went to adoption at PetSmart, but he is home as usual. He said a very nice older man stopped to visit, but he wasn't quite ready for a new kitty, which we all breathed a sight of relief.

Thank you for your loving paws of support yesterday as I started off on the campaign trail Angel Jes! Today I promised you a Zoo visit so take a seat on our plane & get ready for a unique travel experience as we head to Argentina! Our pilots today are Hot Rod & Winslow but special thanks go to K Pete for making sure the planes were ready! We’ll be met at the airport by Lola & the BA kitties so they can show us the way to the LUJAN ZOO! (The planes soar into the sky & the kitties all settle back to await their arrival in Argentina.)
While we’re in the air let me tell you a little bit about the LUJAN ZOO in Argentina. Often referred to as the most controversial and dangerous zoo in the world, Lujan Zoo is one of the few places in the world where you can have a relatively safe close encounter with some of the most vicious wild animals on Earth. Located about 58 kilometers from Buenos Aires, the Lujan Zoo is reachable by bus from Plaza Italia. The trip takes about an hour and a half in a comfortable, air-conditioned coach with reclining seats. When we get dropped off on the side of the highway, don’t panic because we are in the right place. All we need to do is cross under the overpass and look for the zoo sign. Upon arrival at the Lujan Zoo, you might think you’ve come all this way to experience what might appear to be nothing more than a petting zoo, but the truckload of freshly-butchered meat passing by will make you start asking yourself questions. Rather than the standard miniature horses and timid domesticated animals you might expect, at Lujan you’ll get up close and personal with carnivorous lions, tigers and pumas, not to mention camels and elephants. The monkeys go about their day and survey the human onlookers with disinterest. One of the first cages nearest the entrance is inhabited by lion cubs as well as dogs. For the first few months, the lion cubs will learn obedience training and other important behavior from the domesticated dogs. The dogs will help the lion cubs learn to be more docile in this setting where they will interact with humans. At present there are several lion cages that you can enter, with lions grouped and separated by age. It’s interesting to see how their personalities and behavior develop. Prior to entering any of the cages, visitors are instructed not to make fast, sudden movements or excite the animals in any way. Young children/kits may enter the cage with dogs and cubs with adult supervision, but they’re not permitted to enter the cage with the adult lions. While words cannot effectively describe the Lujan Zoo, it is simply something that must be experienced to fully appreciate.
(The planes touch down & all kitties debark.) Well kitties there are Lola & the rest of the BA kitties waiting to take us to the buses that have been reserved for our trip to the beautiful & unique LUJAN ZOO. Have fun with the animals & I’ll meet you back here promptly at 7 for our return flight.

Happy purrs,
Trixie

Sweet Angel Jes and Mom,
We would love to stop by your cloud for dinner sometime - just as long as we can reciprocate. Yes, Mom does work pretty hard when she is working, but then we have lots of fun together when she's not. She is getting ready to get some chicken out for her dinner, and we know that we will all get a small piece - and then a little later we will get some wet food for a treat - isn't life great as a home kitty!

We arise very early to head out ...
surfing at Kahaluu Beach. Surfing was at one time literally the "Sport of Kings" in Hawaii, reserved only for royalty. Today we can either watch this exciting sport from the safety of the shore or experience the rush of catching a wave ourselves by taking a surfing lesson. We are told that experienced instructors will take first-timers to safe breaks and get them on their feet and “riding the waves” within a two-hour lesson. Those of us who are novices race to be first in line … only to find there are enough instructors to teach all. What fun this promises to be.

Another prominent form of surfing in the ocean today includes bodyboarding, which refers to when a surfer rides a wave on the belly on a bodyboard which is shorter than a surfboard and usually made of a lighter material. Some of our group prefer to “ride the waves” in this manner. Most of the ladies choose this.

And then there’s bodysurfing, the act of surfing a wave without a board, is considered by some to be the purest form of surfing. Soon K. Steve, Ernie, Bart, Tucker and that Darn Bee Gee have mastered the art and are entertaining all with their antics. The rest of the furrfellows decide to attempt this as well, with varying results … most of which are quite entertaining.

Our instructors tell us the Guinness Book of World Records recognized a 78 foot (23.8 m) wave ride by Garrett McNamara at Nazaré, Portugal as the largest wave ever surfed. This has us eyeing the 15 foot waves we’ve been attacking and trying to imagine a wave more than 5 times higher. Gulp.

A picnic on the beach and then we are on our way to experience a real submarine tour! We board a boat which takes us out to the submarine. Once there we climb down into the viewing area, which consists of seats facing portholes, pretty much like at a Disney park. But this is a REAL SUBMARINE and we were soon diving into the habitat of countless, exotic sea creatures. Gazing through our spacious viewports, we exchange glances with hundreds of fish of different species dwelling in the waters off the coast of the island. The dive site is about 130 feet deep with coral formations and artificial reefs with sunken ships and airplanes. We see a shark, lots of colorful reef fish, sting rays and green sea turtles. The tour guide assigned to our submarine is not only knowledgeable but also very informative of every marine life in the deep ocean. She points out to us every fish species we encounter.

Before we know it the 45 minute tour has ended and once our submarine surfaces we disembark and board the awaiting shuttle boat to take us back to shore. This was definitely a worthwhile and enjoyable experience.

When we arrive back at our ship, we find the captain has arranged for us to have a late supper. We dine on all manner of fresh fish caught here in the waters right off the island. What a day this has been, and we spend the next few hours reliving it with our dear furriends. See a picture of a sea turtle on my page.

The second day on Hawaii ...
… we will visit someplace a bit different. We are headed for the Seahorse Farm near Kona where they have over 2000 seahorses and are currently breeding over 15 different species characteristically unique shape, from the horsey looking head down to the long, curling tail. Then there’s the seahorses’ covering, a delicate skin stretched over bony plates rather than regular scales.

Before we begin our seahorse adventure, we need to make something purrfectly clear: Seahorses are for viewing, NOT for snacking.

Once inside we discover that Seahorses come in a variety of colors, with some species even changing their hue to match their surroundings. The Seahorse is a truly unique marine animal. At first glance, one might not even know a seahorse is a fish, with their unique upright posture. They have a distinctive long, tube-shaped snout with a prehensile tail that grabs onto corals and plants. Their jaws are small and only allow enough room to suck in small pieces of food. Seahorses are part of the family Syngnathidae, which also includes Sea Dragons and Pipefish. There are currently thought to be 80 species of seahorses found throughout the world’s oceans. They range in size from just over 1cm for pygmy seahorses and up to 14 inches for the Pot Belly Seahorse. This seahorse farm was the first one in the world and is the only one in the US. The guided tour lasts about an hour, the guide showing us various tanks where we watch them swim, hook tails and dance. We learn that sea horses mate for life. Beautiful, fascinating and mysterious, the seahorse is a fish like no other.

Next we visit Pana`ewa Rainforest Zoo, which is very unique; it is the only natural tropical rainforest zoo in the United States. It is home to more than 80 species of animals! First we take a regal walk amidst peacocks in tropical gardens. We then head for encloses where we see the binturong, giant anteaters, 'Io (Hawaiian hawk), white Bengal tiger, and lemurs galore. There are lush and exotic plants providing perches for beautifully colored birds. We enjoy our picnic lunch which we eat on benched tables; after which we enjoy ice cream bars from the zoo snack shop.

And now, off to the beach! Many Big Island beaches are among the best you will find anywhere, period. This is especially true along the sunny west coast. Mauna Kea - Kauna'oa Beach is a beautiful, long crescent of fine white sand with crystal-clear water; one of the favorite beaches on the Big Island. It offers excellent swimming and snorkeling, and has full facilities. We throw our towels onto the sand, strip down to bathing suits, and race into the water … warm, soothing, and a great place to unwind.

We choose to linger until the sun begins to drop below the horizon. Awesome. The colors are unlike anything we’ve yet seen on our Round the World Cruise. This was definitely worth waiting for. See pics of seahorses on my page.

Come visit me, Q. Cherish - COTM March 2012.

We have reached our destination...
Hawaii … The Big Island. It is the furthest south of any in the island chain, and it's larger than all the other islands put together. It is also a place where one can ski in the daytime and walk barefoot in a warm sea at sundown. We will spend a couple of days at least exploring all it has to offer. The island is the youngest in the Hawaiian chain. It provides a vast canvass of environments to discover a variety of unrivaled natural wonders: the tallest sea mountain in the world at 33,000 feet – Maunakea; and the most massive mountain in the world - Maunaloa.

Watch the landscape change before your very eyes at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Located 30 miles southwest of Hilo is Kilauea volcano, one of the most active volcanoes on earth. It has been erupting since January 3rd, 1983. The chance to witness the primal process of creation and destruction make this park one of the most popular visitor attractions in Hawaii. January 2013 marked the 30th anniversary of the beginning of Kilauea’s eruptions. Volcanoes are monuments to Earth's origin, evidence that its primordial forces are still at work. During a volcanic eruption, we are reminded that our planet is an ever-changing environment whose basic processes are beyond human control. As much as we have altered the face of the Earth to suit our needs, we can only stand in awe before the power of an eruption.

Hawaii emerged from the sea millions of years ago, forged by the power of volcanoes. Loihi is located underwater off the southern coast of Hawaii Island. Erupting since 1996, this emerging seamount may break the surface in about 250,000 years, adding a ninth island to the Hawaiian chain.

Today we will be taken by helicopter to view Kilauea. We gather our cameras and courage and hop aboard. Within a short time, we arrive at area adjacent to the volcano. Keeping a safe distance, the helicopter circles the area, allowing us to take many pictures and to see how massive this natural wonder truly is. Not a steep-sided volcano, as we thought it would be, but rather spreading out and comprising approximately half of the island of Hawaii, we realize this thing is BIG.

Our next stop is Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory – We’ve seen the blue cans and boxes in the shops; now we visit the source. We take a self-guided tour of the factory, watching in one area how the nuts are blanketed with chocolate. We then enter a room where there are samples for us to try. We taste the macadamia nuts plain, salted, in brittle and covered in milk chocolate. In the gift shop, we purchase some of our favorites to take back to the ship.

Back to the ship for dinner with the Captain. Once in our rooms for the night, we talk of what we’ve seen and experienced, and munch on our macadamia treats. A quick face wash to clean our whiskers of chocolate and other sweet traces, then into our beds where we fall quickly asleep.

Down Under ...
We are sailing towards our next destination … Australia. We will spend at least six days there, exploring the various areas and their flora and fauna.

Australia is surrounded by the Indian and Pacific oceans, and the Tasman Sea lying between Australia and New Zealand. The world's smallest continent and sixth largest country by total area, Australia—owing to its size and isolation—is often dubbed the "island continent", and is sometimes considered the world's largest island.

Australia's size gives it a wide variety of landscapes, with subtropical rain forests in the north-east, mountain ranges in the south-east, south-west and east areas, and a dry desert in its center. It is the flattest continent, with the oldest and least fertile soils; desert or semi-arid land commonly known as the outback makes up by far the largest portion of land. Mount Augustus, claimed to be the world's largest monolith, is located in Western Australia. The driest inhabited continent, only its south-east and south-west corners have a temperate climate. The population density is among the lowest in the world, although a large proportion of the population lives along the temperate south-eastern coastline. Melbourne reached first place on The Economist's 2011 World's Most Livable Cities list, followed by Sydney, Perth, and Adelaide in sixth, eighth, and ninth place respectively.

The climate of Australia is significantly influenced by ocean currents, including the Indian Ocean Dipole and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, which is correlated with periodic drought, and the seasonal tropical low pressure system that produces cyclones in northern Australia. These factors induce rainfall to vary markedly from year to year. Much of the northern part of the country has a tropical predominantly summer rainfall (monsoon) climate. The southwest corner of the country has a Mediterranean climate. Much of the southeast (including Tasmania) is temperate.

Australian wine is produced in 60 distinct production areas, mainly in the southern, cooler parts of the country. The wine regions in each of these states produce different wine varieties and styles that take advantage of local climates and soil types. In 1995, an Australian red wine, Penfolds Grange, won the Wine Spectator award for Wine of the Year, the first time a wine from outside France or California achieved this distinction.

Tomorrow we will do a study of the animals found on the continent of Australia. (See a topographical map of Australia at the bottom of my page.)
