Thanks from Dasher!
Thanks for stopping by to congratulate me on my Dec. 26th COTD win! I'm a little behind in getting back to you because I was called up to the North Pole to help Santa Claus and I'm still recovering from a very busy night! You see, the reindeer named Dasher failed to show up for duty! Santa knew he could count on the kitty named Dasher to come through for him! So that's when I dashed into action! Imagine my surprise when Santa even asked me to lead the sleigh! The only problem was when my bushy tail kept tickling Rudolph's red nose! MOL! But you know I always love it when Santa says "Dash Away Dash Away... Dash Away ALL!" My sister Sparkles said he was telling me to dash away and go home. But I don't believe her...

Thanks again. Have a very Happy New Year!!
Your friend,
Dasher the Kitty! (not Dasher the reindeer... Santa is still looking for him!...I think maybe he started his New Year's Eve celebrating a little early...)

Come visit me, Sparkles 265836 & Dasher 265838.

So many of you sweet kitties came to my birthday pawty yesterday that it bounced me up into the COTD window this morning. The view from up here is great! Thanks for coming to congratulate me.

And guess what? Since it’s National Fast Food Day, my brother Mike sprung for McD’s Fish Filets for everyone. I insisted, and I AM Queen for the Day, right?

To prove it, I’m dictating from my usual late-afternoon spot, cuddled on the couch with Big Bro Will while he watches TV. Ahh, life is good! -- Evie

Thank you for your well wishes on my purrday and pawing by on my big surprise COTD. I had the most wonderful day mostly because I spent it with my pawrents by my side. Thank you too for your friendship and we do apologize for the late reply as Mom has been quite busy and we have been experiencing very bad weather.

DAY 31

The Cat Who is a Station Master
.
Tama (born April 29, 1999) is a calico cat who is the station master at Kishi Station in Kinokawa, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan.

In April 2006 the Wakayama Electric Railway converted all stations on the Kishigawa Line from manned to unmanned in an effort to cut costs. Station masters were selected from employees of local businesses near each station. For Kinokawa railway station, Toshiko Koyama, the neighborhood grocer, was selected as station master. Koyama had adopted Tama and other stray cats, and he fed them at the station.

In January 2007, railway officials decided to officially name Tama the station master. As station master her primary duty is to greet passengers. The position comes with a stationmaster's hat; in lieu of a salary, the railway provides Tama with free cat food.

The publicity from Tama's appointment led to an increase in ridership by 17% for that month as compared to January 2006; ridership statistics for March 2007 showed a 10% increase over the previous financial year. A study has estimated that the publicity surrounding Tama's has contributed 1.1 billion Yen to the local economy. In January 2008, Tama was promoted to "super station master" in a ceremony attended by the president of the company and the mayor; as a result of her promotion, she is "the only female in a managerial position" in the company. Her new position has an "office" — a converted ticket booth containing a litter box.

Her staff consists of two feline assistant stationmasters, Chibi (born May 12, 2000) and an orange tabby cat named Miiko (born October 3, 1998).

Thank you so much for my daily vote and your kind continued support of my catpaign. I'm leaving you a vote and wishes for a blessed day.

DAY 30: HERO CAT

The Cat Who Has Bionic Legs
Oscar lost his two rear paws in an encounter with a combine harvester in October 2009. Owners Kate and Mike Nolan took him to their local veterinarian, Peter Haworth. In turn, the vet referred Oscar to Dr. Noel Fitzpatrick, a neuro-orthopedic surgeon in Eashing, a few miles southwest of London.

The 2-1/2 year old black cat with green eyes was outfitted with metallic pegs that link the ankle to the foot. Oscar is now back on his feet, walking, running, and jumping.
Together with biomedical engineering experts, Fitzpatrick gave Oscar two metal prosthetic implants that are a bit wobbly, to imitate a cat's natural walk.  Fitzpatrick said he and biomedical engineers designed the artificial paws so that they would be fused to the bone and skin. "That allows this implant to work as a seesaw on the bottom of the animal's limbs to give him (an) effectively normal gait," he said. "Oscar can now run and jump about as cats should do."
The surgery will probably not be widely used, since the cost of the prosthetics are approximately $3,000 apiece, plus the cost of the operation itself.
Oscar isn't the first bionic cat, though he's the most noticeable.  In 2008, Fitzpatrick made an artificial knee for a cat named Missy who had been struck by a hit and run driver. Google Oscar the bionic cat!

Thank you so much for my daily vote and your kind continued support of my catpaign. I'm leaving you a vote and wishes for a blessed day.

DAY 29: CAT FUNNIES

HOW TO GIVE YOUR CAT A PILL IN 10 EASY STEPS
(written by Glenda Moore)

1. Sit on sofa. Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of your elbow as though you were going to give a bottle to a baby. Talk softly to it.
2. With right hand, stroke cat's throat until it opens its mouth (be patient). Drop pill into mouth. Let go of cat, noticing the direction it runs.
3. Pick the pill up off the floor and go get the cat. Sit on floor in kitchen, wrap arm around cat as before, drop pill in mouth. Let go of cat, noticing the direction it runs.
4. Scoot across floor to pick up pill, and go find the cat. Bring it back into the kitchen. Hold cat as before, but hold down it front paws with forearm. Drop pill into mouth.
5. Pry claws from back legs out of your arm. Go get the cat, pick up half-dissolved pill from floor and drop it into garbage can.
6. Get new pill from bottle. Go into bathroom and get a fluffy towel. Stay in the bathroom with the cat, and close the door.
7. Sit on bathroom floor, wrap towel around kitty, leaving only his head exposed. Cradle kitty in the crook of your arm, and pick up pill off of counter.
8. Retrieve cat from top of shower door (you didn't know that cats can jump 5 feet straight up in the air, did you?), and wrap towel around it a little tighter, making sure its paws can't come out this time. With fingers at either side of its jaw, pry it open and pop pill into mouth. Quickly close mouth (his, not yours).
9. Sit on floor with cat in your lap, stroking it under the chin and talking gently to it for at least half an hour, while the pill dissolves.
10. Unwrap towel, open bathroom door. Wash off scratches in warm soapy water, comb your hair, and go find something to occupy your time for 7-1/2 hours; then repeat.

Thank you for your support of my catpaign and for my daily vote. You mean so much to me. I'm leaving a vote and wishes for a blessed day.

Happy day to you all! Thank you for my COTM vote today and for being such good supporters all along. I hope you will enjoy the story which I've chosen for today:

DAY 28

CAN A LOST CAT FIND HER WAY HOME?
(Excerpt from Why Do Cats Sulk? by Arline Bleeker)

Indeed she can. And the list of incredible “Lost Cat Returns Home” stories is as long as some of the journeys themselves.

Like the one about a yellow tomcat belonging to an Army sergeant. When the sergeant was transferred from Kokomo, Indiana, to Augusta, Georgia – a distance of 700 miles – he took the kitty with him. The cat made that trip in a closed box on an express train, so there was no possible way she ever could have known the route. Well, imagine how surprised the sergeant was when his kitty disappeared and showed up back in Indiana in less than three weeks?

A cat's uncanny ability to travel enormous distances over totally unknown territory to return to their homes is called psi trailing. For decades, it's been under serious study by Duke University's parapsychology laboratory. Still, no one quite understands exactly how cats do this.

Psi trailing certainly demonstrates a cat's amazing physical (perhaps even supernatural, some say) ability – not to mention her loyalty, devotion and love. But many experts laugh at the weird theories and suggest instead that the true answer is not so bizarre.

Your cat's amazing homing ability may rely on a built-in navigation system similar to that used by birds. She subconsciously registers the angle of the sun at certain times of day.

When she's taken away from home, she finds her way back again by using a combination of internal biological clocks, trial and error and the angle of the sun. She's so good at doing this that she doesn't even need a clear day to navigate – she's that sensitive to the earth's magnetic fields.

Regardless, let's say the cat doesn't use supernatural power but actually manages to find her way back home over several hundred unknown miles based on this complicated scientific formula. I think that's still pretty amazing. Don't you?

Again, I thank you all so very much for your love and support. I couldn't be doing this without my CC furiends. I'm leaving you a vote and wishes for a blessed day.

><((((º> SPECIAL PURRS TO MY FRIENDS!! <º))))><
Last Wednesday 23rd October I had the most wonderful surprise when I found my face on the COTD's winner window!
It was my 4th badge since I joined Cat Channel in March 2009. During these four years being part of this kind and caring community lots of unforgettable things happened to us: We made friends for life, learnt so much about them, had much fun and also a great support during difficult times.
CC changed our lives in many ways. We could never imagine that the day we created my page. Mom read once this in a book:
"Your beloved and your friends were once strangers. Somehow at a particular time, they came from the distance toward your life. Their arrival seemed so accidental and contingent. Now your life is unimaginable without them. To lose them now would be to lose yourself"
Thank you for being part of our lives. Thanks a lot also for pawing by my page with your lovely messages, treats and gifts. We love you.
Here I'm bringing you a box of catnip chocolates to celebrate with me along with a huge bunch of whisker kisses and hugs...
With much love,
from your friends always and forever,

DAY 27

CAT ADDICTS
(An excerpt from The Secret Life of Cats by Arline Bleecker)

We are cat addicts, indeed. The 60 million of us who share our lives with them have come to rely on our cats for the support of our souls. It has probably always been that way.

They are regal, snooty and divine. It's a small wonder that the Egyptians worshiped them. Even now, there are times when I swear I can hear mine saying, “Your ancestors were living in caves while mine were being idolized. So hurry up with that can opener!”

In fact, I never can quite decide if I have cats or if they have me. When I lived with as many as seven of them, food-buying was a chore indeed. One day, I decided to purchase 16 cases of cat chow at once. “She must be mad!” I heard the cashier mumble to one of her co-workers.

I remember the first time I was asked by a total stranger, “Do you have cats, ma'am?”

“How can you tell?” I replied, surprised by his insight.

“Look at your shirt,” he said. It was covered with cat hair.

Without a doubt, their evidence is everywhere. And I wear it proudly.

As a writer, being at home among them all the time gives me a great deal of pleasure. Their limber little bodies are everywhere – draped over the back of a chair, under the sofa cushions – creating small landscapes of leisure and loveliness.

But I also can tell you that it would be easier to write with a herd of elephants in my room than a single cat.

They walk on my computer keyboard, camp out on top of my books, make nests in my notes, wreck my research, nibble on the end of my pencil, or insist I drop everything altogether to scratch an ear or two. And if they don't like what I write … they just shred it to pieces. (They loved it when I was working on this book, though. After all, it's all about them!)

Even if you're living with just one cat, you know by now that she has as many personalities as proverbial lives. Well, maybe not nine, but darn close. Enough, at least, to keep you forever wondering “Who is this cat?”

In the final analysis, their mysterious world may indeed be known only to them. But who could fault us for trying to figure them out? Not only is it fun to probe their mysteries, but the more we find out about them, the more it stirs our curiosity.

Thank you so very much for your support of my catpaign and your daily voting. I am certainly most appreciative. I'm leaving you a vote and wishes for a blessed day.

Cats do not need to blink frequently like humans need to.
Cats blink slower than humans.
When a cat blinks it does not always blink both eyes at the same time, commonly it may only blink one eye at a time in order to keep continued vision through the non blinking eye.  The manner in which a cat blinks often gives the impression that a cat is winking.
White cats with blue eyes are slightly more prone to deafness. However it is not true that all white cats with blue eyes are deaf.  A white cat with one blue eye may have impaired hearing in the ear on the same side as the blue eye.
Blue eyed cats are generally associated with the Siamese Cat

the dog would be a blundering outspoken fellow;
but the cat would have the rare grace
of never saying a word too much.
--Mark Twain

A cat pours his body on the floor like water.
It is restful just to see him.
--William Lyon Phelps

They say the test of literary power
is whether a man can write an inscription.
I say, “Can he name a kitten?”
--Samuel Butler

when at rest. For there is nothing
brisker than his life when in motion.
--Christopher Smart

Animals are such agreeable friends -
they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms.

It is a difficult matter to gain the affection
of a cat. He is a philosophical, methodical
animal, tenacious of his own habits,
fond of order and neatness, and disinclined
to extravagant sentiment. He will be your
friend, if he finds you worthy of friendship,
but not your slave.

WELCOME AT RAINBOW BRIDGE
by Alexander Theodore, Bouvier, Fourth Year Resident

On the morning of September 11, 2001, there was an unprecedented amount of activity at the Rainbow Bridge. Decisions had to be made. They had to be made quickly. And, they were.
An issue, not often addressed here, is the fact that many residents really have no loved one for whom to wait. Think of the pups who lived and died in hideous puppy mills. No one on earth loved or protected them. What about the many who spent unhappy lives tied in backyards? And all the dogs and cats who were abused. Who are they to wait for?
We don't talk about that much up here. We share our loved ones as they arrive, happy to do so. But we all know there is nothing like having your very own person who thinks you are the most special pup or kitty in the Heavens.
That Tuesday morning a request rang out for pups and kitties not waiting for specific persons to volunteer for special assignment.  An eager, curious crowd surged excitedly forward, each one wondering what the assignment would be.
They were told by a solemn voice that unexpectedly, all at once, over 5,000 loving people had left Earth long before they were ready.  All the pups and kitties, as all pups and kitties do, felt the humans' pain deep in their own hearts. Without hearing more, there was a clamoring among them - "May I have one to comfort?" "I'll take two, I have a big heart." "I have been saving kisses forever."
One after another they came forward begging for assignment. One cozy-looking fluffy kitty hesitantly asked, "Are there any children coming? I would be very comforting for a child 'cause I'm  soft and squishy and I always wanted to be hugged." A group of  Dalmatians came forward asking to meet the Firemen and be their friends. The larger working breeds offered to greet the Police Officers and make them feel at home. Little dogs and kitties volunteered to do what they do best, cuddle and kiss.
Dogs and cats who on Earth had never been given a kind word  or a pat on the head, stepped forward and said, "I will love any human who needs love."
Then all the dogs and cats, wherever on Earth they originally came from, rushed to the Rainbow Bridge and stood waiting, overflowing with love to share -- each tail wagging a little American Flag.

Thank you all so very much for your loving brotherly and sisterly support. I love you all. I'm leaving a vote and wishes for a blessed day.

DAY 22

Hamlet's Cat's Soliloquy
Henry Beard, in
"Poetry for Cats: The Definitive Anthology of Distinguished Feline Verse"

To go outside, and there perchance to stay
Or to remain within: that is the question:
Whether 'tis better for a cat to suffer
The cuffs and buffets of inclement weather
That Nature rains on those who roam abroad,
Or take a nap upon a scrap of carpet,
And so by dozing melt the solid hours
That clog the clock's bright gears with sullen time
And stall the dinner bell.
To sit, to stare Outdoors, and by a stare to seem to state
A wish to venture forth without delay,
Then when the portal's opened up, to stand
As if transfixed by doubt.
To prowl; to sleep;
To choose not knowing when we may once more
Our readmittance gain: aye, there's the hairball;
For if a paw were shaped to turn a knob,
Or work a lock or slip a window-catch,
And going out and coming in were made
As simple as the breaking of a bowl,
What cat would bear the household's petty plagues,
The cook's well-practiced kicks, the butler's broom,
The infant's careless pokes, the tickled ears,
The trampled tail, and all the daily shocks
That fur is heir to, when, of his own free will,
He might his exodus or entrance make
With a mere mitten?
Who would spaniels fear,
Or strays trespassing from a neighbor's yard,
But that the dread of our unheeded cries
And scratches at a barricaded door
No claw can open up, dispels our nerve
And makes us rather bear our humans' faults
Than run away to unguessed miseries?
Thus caution doth make house cats of us all;
And thus the bristling hair of resolution
Is softened up with the pale brush of thought,
And since our choices hinge on weighty things,
We pause upon the threshold of decision.

DAY 20

CATS AROUND THE ZODIAC

THE MYSTIQUE OF THE PISCES CAT
(February 20 – March 20)

The mystique of the Pisces cat is that of a dream set afloat upon the infinite seas of imagination. This aura is an endowment from Neptune, planetary ruler of Pisces and the namesake in ancient mythology of the god of the seas. In Astrology, Neptune is called both the planet of illusion and self-deception: It is the author of the most extraordinary feats of creativity among its human Piscean natives and, simultaneously, the instigator of their most egregious and self-destructive delusions. These complicated possibilities are oddly suggested in the feline of this last zodiacal house. A yearning for total understanding of life, in oneself and in others, and a desperate, if abstract, desire for completion form the syndrome which mystically colours the face, motions, and relationships of the Piscean cat. Known in Astrology as the most gentle of all the sun signs, Pisces is tender beyond belief, eliciting a “pull” in others to protect this creature against its own terribly obvious vulnerability. An excess of sympathy toward all living, feeling entities forms a major part of its mystique; the cat, like its human counterpart, empathizes with everyone. A cry of despair rends its heart and sends it flying to offer succor of the most sincere and profound nature. This impulse is in no small part an inherent trait stemming from Pisces' placement in the zodiac's Twelfth House. In Astrology, this sector is known as the house of secrets, sorrows, introspection, and self-undoing. The latter, sounding negative, actually implies an analytic undoing in order to “redo” oneself – a mystical process by which real unity with the universe is ultimately achieved. The cat of this highly complex astral synthesis can only approximate and suggest these infinite subtleties peculiar to the Piscean nature. Yet it is so ethereal and touching, moving hearts of the most unlikely people and the most hostile cats, that its Piscean essence does reign.

DAY 19

CATS AROUND THE ZODIAC

THE MYSTIQUE OF THE AQUARIUS CAT
(January 21 – February 19)

The mystique of the Aquarius cat is abstracted, airy, and intellectual. Its wanderings are a weirdly eternal quest for truth which it seeks open-mindedly and often eccentrically. These traits are an endowment from Uranus, planetary ruler of Aquarius. In Astrology, Uranus is known as the planet of revolution and sudden, unpredictable events, and is considered the instigator of many wildly innovative human discoveries. This element of surprise and upheaval forms a definite part of the Aquarian cat's mystique, giving it an almost electrical fascination for people observing it in action. Like its human counterpart, the cat of this sun sign cares little for early substance, being wrought of Fixed Air. The Aquarian cat eats and sleeps for the sustenance to pursue its infinite inquiries into the nature of the world. This is the one cat in the zodiac who is totally without prejudices. It regards everyone and anyone as a possible source of new information, and observes them all with equal suspense. This trait is strengthened even more by the fact that Aquarius is the zodiac's Eleventh House, which rules friendship. This placement makes the Aquarian one of the most kindly and humane creatures in Astrology. All of its probing is really for the benefit of others and their ultimate well-being. If there is a particularly wondrous element in the mystique of the Aquarius cat, it is that this feline appears to love all humans and animals in its sphere. The water bearer, symbol of this sun sign, is depicted in Astrological drawings as one pouring forth the water (or balm) to those who thirst for it. Aquarius, by virtue of this astral heritage, has affections universal in concept. Part of its mystique, then, lies in the ability of the Aquarian feline to appear charitable as it goes from cat to cat. One sees it conferring, then bringing odd, sometimes edible items to other cats. Intelligence and broad love converge in the mystique of this eccentric.

DAY 18

CATS AROUND THE ZODIAC

THE MYSTIQUE OF THE CAPRICORN CAT
(December 22 – January 20)

The mystique of the Capricorn cat is that of a stately and dignified presence, ambitious beyond anything else, yet knowing that only service and time bring status. This heavy aura is an endowment from Saturn, planetary ruler of Capricorn. In Astrology, the planet Saturn is known as the “harvest” planet, allowing the native to reap only that which he has earnestly sown; it is also called “the Old Taskmaster” since it really never permits anyone to get away with anything shoddy or evil. With this astral influence governing its sun, the Capricornian cat takes life very seriously and part of its mystique is contained in a perceptible reverence for tradition and established customs. Owners of such a cat can observe this syndrome in watching the cat function in the home. Anyone near it can sense that the Capricorn feline is imbued with an inordinately human sense of earthly values. Indeed, it seems fascinated by all manner of status symbols, being the sign of Cardinal Earth, as well as a creature of Saturn. Great houses and construction attract this cat, for it is one of the zodiac's prime builders. Magnificent automobiles seem to please it as status symbols of today; glowing chandeliers entice it as enthralling reminders of the past. If the human Capricornian is more conscious of the flow of history than any other native in the zodiac, the feline of this genre is at least fractionally touched by this rare consciousness of the passage of time and the relevance of the immediate moment. Capricorn is the Tenth House of the zodiac, governing worldly status and relations with “superiors.” Thus, the Capricorn cat wants a high status among its peers, and all of its service to other cats and its compliance toward its owner are geared toward that end and no other. Part of its mystique lies in the extraordinary perseverance one can easily observe in this feline. Symbolised in Astrology by the mountain goat, Capricorn climbs slowly, circumventing all obstructions.

DAY 17

CATS AROUND THE ZODIAC

THE MYSTIQUE OF THE SAGITTARIUS CAT
(November 23 – December 21)

The mystique of the Sagittarius cat is that of the g5and and visionary roamer exuding a sense of optimism and wonder as it explores the world. This aura is an endowment from Jupiter, planet of expansion and good luck, which rules the sign of Sagittarius. A love of reasonable explanation colours the motion and basic life force of the Sagittarian cat. Its sun sign symbolises the archer in Astrology, a hint to its inherently direct approach in all living things and the highest form of curiosity as to their motives. Part of the Sagittarian syndrome is an intuitive knowledge of one's enemies. Again the archer symbol is pertinent. For the Sagittarian, when confronted with real hostility, aims and shoots unerringly. One senses this ability to confront actual adversaries with unique competence; yet with the world in general, the Sagittarian cat, like the human of this sector, loves to “spar” with other cats just for the love of argument. Sagittarius is the pedant of the zodiac, who must come out the intellectual victor in any “discussion.” After all, does not the sign of the archer represent the philosopher and traveler of the zodiac? If meows can ever substitute for talk, they will be those issuing from the mouth of the hopelessly authoratative Sagittarian feline, who captures the roost in any verbal squabble. This ability to command other cats on what appears to be a purely “intellectual” level makes up much of the Sagittarian cat's mystique, and is ever more mystical as it manifests itself in the feline expression. Sagittarius, along with Gemini, is a terribly gregarious sun sign, its natives ever seeking to associate freely with a variety of types. When alone, Sagittarius is always longing for company. Because this sector constitutes the zodiac's Ninth House, governing distant travels and foreign relationships, the cat of this genre inevitably reflects these interests in its bearing, making its mystique a vast and universal one.

DAY 16

CATS AROUND THE ZODIAC

THE MYSTIQUE OF THE SCORPIO CAT
(October 24 - November 22)

The mystique of the Scorpio cat is secretive, intense, and psychic, suggesting a stealthy feline who knows all manner of things which others do not. The suggestion of power that emanates from the Scorpio cat is an endowment from Mars, one of its planetary rulers. Pluto the other planetary ruler of this sign, endows the native with a knowledge of things pertaining to the life and death forces. In mythology, Pluto was known as the god of the underworld and a wealth of secrets were jealously guarded by him. This theme is evident in the syndrome of the Scorpion cat. Its penetrating gaze informs you that it is a creature apart imbued with strange a priori knowledge of people and other cats. Yet, as much as it is literally born knowing, Scorpio if forever on a quest to know much more! Often called the investigator of the zodiac, this native appears to be listening with a special ear, to be probing where no one else would be challenged to do a bit of detective work. Part of the Scorpio cat's mystique lies in its quiet self-mastery; it is an oddly repressed feline whose silence is pregnant with deepest emotional content, too precious to speak (or meow) of in public. The Fixed-Water element contributes to the intensity of the Scorpion mystique, compounding the most urgent sexuality in the zodiac with the instinct to control it. This is a key to the paradoxical nature of this sun sign, whose strange and introverted vitality is often a source of inspiration to others. Yet the peculiar ambitions of the Scorpio cat are so contradictory in nature as to prove, quite often, impossible. Thus the symbol of the scorpion depicted in Astrology as biting its own tail, ca be all too appropriate for some of these natives. Scorpio if the zodiac's Eight House, which governs death and sexual regeneration. These heavy, Plutonian subjects are reflected constantly in the expression of the Scorpio cat, the most haunting of them all.

DAY 15

CATS AROUND THE ZODIAC

THE MYSTIQUE OF THE VIRGO CAT
(August 24 – September 23)

The mystique of the Virgo cat is one of earthly purity, suggesting a feline which has transcended all that is gross, unclean, and unhealthy. This aura is an endowment from Mercury, planetary ruler of Virgo, which makes both the human and animal native of this sign very wise and perceptive. In Astrology, Mercury is said to govern mind, and Virgoan cats are often astounding in the keenly intelligent impression they create. Swift-footed, the Virgo cat is never lazy, yet neither is it prodigious in leaping off roofs and other such hazardous feats. Part of its lovely mystique exudes from its careful self-protectiveness, its ability to discriminate between necessary work and bouts of feline folly which other cats undertake so readily. The sign of Virgo is second only to Pisces in its inherent gentleness. This quality, combined with the fastidiousness Virgo manifests in all its activities, helps to create the white, soft feeling which humans perceive about this special cat. Symbolized by the virgin, this native is so discriminating about other cats and so deeply repelled by dirty places that actual celibacy is possible for some born to this sign. The Virgo cat's mystique is coloured by the desire to give service more than the urge to enjoy sex. This quality is due to the fact that the sign comprises the zodiac's Sixth House, which governs occupational labour. Virgo is the tireless and often self-sacrificing native. Humble, pure but practical, the Virgo cat seems to sense its exact role in the feline world and appears ready to perform precisely those tasks which some more authoritative type has delegated to it. Rarely, if ever, does this native appear the leader, since its Sixth-House designation has created a distinctly subordinate nature in Virgo. Perhaps the most striking aspect of the Virgoan cat's mystique is the sensation it gives of seeking some better form of existence. According to ancient Astrological lore, Virgo is the zodiac's perfectionist, dreaming of heaven.

Dear Laci, Lucky, Charlie, Chloe & Angel Peanut,
DAY 14

CATS AROUND THE ZODIAC

THE MYSTIQUE OF THE LIBRA CAT
September 24 - October 23

The mystique of the Libra Cat is utterly ethereal, suggesting a feeling of a feline afloat, rather than walking. This aura is an endowment from Venus, planetary ruler of Libra, and inspires comparisons to the legendary Greek goddess herself, ever gliding about mythological woods in diaphanous gowns, her posture attesting to her sovereignty over beauty. More beautiful cats are born to the sign of Libra than to any other sign of the zodiac. Their floating quality in motion stems from their Cardinal-Air element. Incontestably, they are the “blithe spirits” of the zodiac, as their owners easily perceive. Imbued with the knowledge of their own beauty, the Libra cat possesses an inherent love for all that is tranquil an aesthetically right. It veers away from all that is ugly, angry, violent, or sordid. Past and future do not much concern this ephemeral creature, any more than they do its human counterpart. This cat lives for the moment, ever seeking to make it one of pleasure for itself and for others. Part of its mystique lies in its extraordinary ability to exude contentment, imparting a sense of balance to other felines and even in human beings. Yet, intrinsic to this syndrome is an innocence and trust the Libra cat places I others. This gives it a guilelessness, making it vulnerable to treacheries it can neither conceive of nor anticipate. This vulnerability elicits a deeply protective feeling from anyone who owns a Libra cat. Thus, its overtrusting nature becomes a subtle power over anyone who becomes emotionally involved with it! The Seventh House of Libra governs public relations as well as partnership and this influence lends yet another dimension to the mystique of its feline natives. It makes of the cat a natural arbiter and diplomat whose thirst for harmony if further accented by its Astrological symbol, the scales of justice. In sum, the Libra mystique is a quest for airborne tranquility. It yearns for the peace of literal, constant fair play.

Dear Laci, Lucky, Charlie, Chloe & Angel Peanut,
DAY 13

CATS AROUND THE ZODIAC

THE MYSTIQUE OF THE LEO CAT
July 23 – August 23

The mystique of the Leo cat is awe-inspiring, suggesting a feline personage with all the royal purple trappings that are associated with monarchy and ultimate authority. This aura is an endowment from that golden luminary called the sun, planetary ruler of Leo, its life-giving warmth providing the Astrological constitution of its natives. Mysteriously, the Leo cat seems much less predatory than those of other zodiacal sectors. Like its human counterpart, the Leo feline is benevolent, existing to inspire its subordinates to their best behaviour, capable of self-denial, if necessary, to benefit a creature who is less resourceful. Magnanimity is exuded by this furry “king of the zodiac” (or queen) as it strides so magnificently through garden paths or city streets, surveying all as if it comprises part of its vast kingdom. Other cats, sensing this regal syndrome, literally stand aside quite often when Leo deigns to pass them. Rarely does this dignified creature bother to run unless a true crisis is at hand; rather, Leo makes a grand promenade from time to time each day, its expression so benign towards cats and other entities that one would swear it was actually smiling! Leo the cat – like Leo the person – thinks big, as befits royalty. It veers away from people who are petty and do not grasp the grand scheme of things which Leo comprehends to perfection. Largesse colours its syndrome.

Because Leo is the zodiac's Fifth House, governing romantic love and recreation, this cat's special mystique inevitably suggests the good life to those who are perceptive. Love is never far from the fore of the Leo native's consciousness; this entity was literally born to love. Its Fixed-Fire element guarantees Leo the sustained ardor to pursue the opposite sex in the most glorious manner conceivable. If any cat does it with style, it is this one. With love, as with everything else, pomp and ceremony shape the enthralling mystique of a Leo.

Dear Laci, Lucky, Charlie, Chloe & Angel Peanut,
DAY 12

CATS AROUND THE ZODIAC

THE MYSTIQUE OF THE CANCER CAT
(June 22 – July 22)

The mystique of the Cancer cat is a heavy one, suggesting a nature so profound as to be utterly prophetic. A sensitive, brooding element in the Cancerian feline ignites the imagination; this is a wondrously different creature, whose next thought or action can never be anticipated. This uniqueness is an endowment from that great white luminary, the moon, which rules this sun sign. And since the moon is forever fluctuating, so is the mood of the Cancerian cat. Part of its mystique, then, issues from this sustained astral influence, which makes the behaviour of this native seem virtually “luny,” particularly at those times of the month when there is a new moon or a full moon. Such snarling and raging histrionics as may be witnessed in the presence of this emotional entity are staggering and require great fortitude and trust in the Cancerian's goodwill. Bad moments, however, are quickly erased by the maternal strain in both male and female Cancer cats, a deeply committed family sense which is guaranteed by the Fourth House placement of this sun sign. Yet this beautiful familial conscience may oddly compound its erratic emotional constitution, since any threat, real or imagined, to one of its young or to a mate evokes a fierce tenacity, a protectiveness amounting to agression. These impulses are compounded in the Cancerian mystique so that a predatory aura about the cat is simply undeniable, whatever its actual motivations. So compelling is the character portrayed by this cat, that no one, human or animal, can pass it unaware. Part of its mystery lies in Cancer's weird ability to soak up higher knowledge in order to convey it to others. This quality has caused its human counterpart to be called the teacher, the prophet, the minister; thus, the feline native actually seems to be proselytizing, as it goes from cat to cat. Symbolised by the clutching crab, your Cancer cat wants a whole congregation of converts!

Dear Laci, Lucky, Charlie, Chloe & Angel Peanut,
DAY 11

CATS AROUND THE ZODIAC

THE MYSTIQUE OF GEMINI (May 22 – June 21)

The mystique of the Gemini cat is one of rare and inspiring exuberance, suggesting a feline propelled by a combination of delight and curiosity. This special presence is inspired by fast-moving Mercury, planetary ruler of Gemini, after which the fleet-footed god of Roman mythology was named. In Astrology, Mercury is said to govern the mind, thus shaping the creatures in its sector into clever, witty, and probing ones. The system lends itself to the mystique of the Gemini cat hardly less than to the person born to the zodiac's Third House. Ever shifting its enthralled gaze from one set of circumstances or people to another, the Gemini cat seems hungry to take in all information and knowledge; it wants to be the proverbial genius with many faces. This trait, of course, is responsible for its Astrological symbol of the twins, usually depicted as two entities conjoined, each yearning in an opposite direction. Duality charmingly colours the Geminian cat's mystique. So airy and fleeting is its attention, always being on the verge of being seduced by yet another subject, this creature challenges both people and other felines to absorb it in total concentration. Yet the Geminian personality is so gregarious, so endlessly sociable and communicative, that the cat seems almost mystically onward, no matter when it happens to alight. Because Gemini is the zodiac's Third House, governing communication, part of the Gemini cat's mystique lies in its curious manner of going from person to person or from cat to cat, as if conveying messages of great importance. The Gemini cat is the self-appointed liaison officer of the zodiac, so serious does it take its astral mission in life. Other cats, if you watch them around a Gemini feline, do indeed seem to harken to some “word” that is being given by this nimble-footed native, for their expressions change, as if much food for thought has just been given! Like its human counterpart, the Gemini cat mystically enchants all the while it informs.

Dear Laci, Lucky, Charlie, Chloe & Angel Peanut,
DAY 10

CATS AROUND THE ZODIAC

THE MYSTIQUE OF TAURUS (April 21 – May 21)

The mystique of the Taurus cat is a serene one, reflecting a marvelous stability and an almost human sense of purpose. Its Fixed-Earth element figures strong in practical, persevering qualities this feline exudes. The cat seems to have a sense of proportion, to grasp the nature of the world in terms of its own place in it. Symbolised in Astrology by the bull, the Taurean cat is the most determined of all felines, a quality which both people and other cats sense in its presence. Venus, its planetary ruler, endows this cat with the infinity grace that comprises some of its mystique. Very little can ruffle the fur of this placid, rather profound cat, who tends to look for the best in everyone and to highly value the material things with which Providence has endowed it. Only when some real outrage is perpetuated upon the Taurean cat, and then perhaps or the second or third time, does it manifest the prodigious temper, displaying the “bull-in-the-china-shop” syndrome particular to this sector. Intrinsic to its aura is a suggestion of eternal knowledge and an appreciation of what solid things are worth. This is an endowment from Taurus' Second House placement, known in Astrology as the “money house.” Clearly no cat thinks in terms of coin but the Taurus cat seems to have more than a fleeting concept of the value of its own home, the little basket or ledge which comprises its usual bed, and the family which is its source of daily feedings. This cat manifests palpable loyalty toward its owners, so that steadfastness truly colours its aura. Like its human counterpart, the Taurean cat's mystique is a curious blend of industry and laziness. The Second House native is known for its ability to work purposefully, especially to provide for its dependents. On the other hand, a lassitude is felt in all its movements, an earthy sensuality which disdains “getting down to it.” This paradox characterises the Taurean mystique.

Dear Laci, Lucky, Charlie, Chloe & Angel Peanut,
DAY 9
I'll be bringing you all a different zodiac sign each day, Aries through Pisces!

CATS AROUND THE ZODIAC

THE MYSTIQUE OF ARIES (March 21 to April 20)

The mystique of the Aries cat is reckless, quite often propelled by what seems to be blind motion. This sensation is an endowment from Mars, planetary ruler of Aries, which happens to be the planet of war, stress, and action. Thus many felines of this sign exude a quality which could actually be felt or seen as Martian. Always the leader, this cat seems on the verge of charging, like the ram symbolising his sign. Courage is part of the Aries mystique; one simply intuits that no thought of consequence ever inhibits or prohibits its innate impulse to jump in and experience whatever is attracting it. Like its human counterpart, the Aries cat exudes a fiery, ardent quality, which is felt by sensitive humans as a hunger for life in as many phases as a feline is capable of experience it. A love for the new, the novel, and the untried seethes from this cat; it will stop at virtually nothing to get at these. As the quality of leadership typifies the human Aries native, so does it compose a part of the Aries cat mystique. There is nothing passive and very little of he student in this cat's bearing, for patience is definitely not one of its virtues. Rather, one may expect it to be the dashing “captain” of the most magnificent chases, intrepidly touching ground where cats (if not angels!) would usually fear to tread, its followers spurred by the Aries' breathtaking audacity. Since Aries is the zodiac's First House, governing self-awareness and conscience of countenance, a measure of egotism is always exuded by its feline natives. Yet the proud bearing of the Aries cat is part of its charm; humans might even envy the unfaltering self-assurance this little animal possesses. Still, on a deeper level, the Aries mystique must be understood in terms of its inherent infantilism. The First House native is eternally immature and naïve, literally the baby of the zodiac. Ignorance and bravado are conjoined in the Aries mystique.
