Cats communicate to each other by means of odor. Cats have scent glands that are on their forehead, around their mouth, and near the base of their tail. The cat will rub these glands against people and objects. This marks them with their scent. Only cats and a few other animals can smell the odor.

hi Whiskers
Mom made it to pet smart. They are saying that a really big snow storm is heading our way. The last one shut everything down for three days. It was no fun but the one good thing is mom does not have to go out. Dad made sure that mom was safe today since there were icy patches. She got a two week supply of wet food and lots of kibble too and treats. Sending hugs and love. Purrs...Rhuby

Saturday in the Workshop
The day was bitter cold, but the snow had stopped falling, The sky was a dark blue and the weather service was predicting a respite in the storm. More snow was expected later in the evening, but for now the wind had diminished and the world was a beautiful scene of white snow and blue sky. It was a good day to spend in the warm cozy shop.
The workshop was busy, Ralph and Flower were working with the beautiful dark oak, making rail and stile muntins, (A muntin is a strip of wood or metal separating and holding panes of glass in a window) They would assemble them into the four sides of the display case, for Whiskers’s first anniversary gifts from Talley.
Pete was sanding the epoxy fillets where the deck joined the hull on Monty and Josie Mae’s boat. He was stretched out on his back, wearing a mask that supplied filtered air, and using a power sander to smooth the seams until one surface flowed into the next without a visible line. Thomas was working on the exterior hull of the Pawty Animals boat. Mitch, Pearl, Daisy, Tabitha and Liliana were positioning the hull panels into the construction cradle in preparation for inserting and tightening the wires that would hold the pieces in position whole the epoxies were applied and hardened.
They had been working for almost an hour when Inky, Bobby and Storm came in. The boys had done the shelter rounds and reported that the cave shelter cats were having a snowcat building contest for the kids. They said that they had been asked to judge. Storm said, “We couldn’t decide, they were all very good. So, we said that it was a tie for first place.”
Pete laughed, “Better you than me. I probably would have done the same thing though.”
Inky, Bobby and Storm went to work on their boat. Their boat was almost ready for outfitting. Today they were setting the pivoting mast in place and running the rigging. Thomas inspected the smoothness of their hull and told them they had done a fine job. Thomas was a perfectionist and when he said that the hull looked good, it was far better than just “good”. There was a knock at the door, and when Talley went to answer it she found The Cat Parcel Service driver waiting. He said I have a delivery for you; it’s a bunch of special outboard motors. Where would you like me to put them?

Talley looked back into the shop and called to Pete, “The motors for the boats are here, where do you want them?”
Pete said, “Have them put along the far back wall.”
The driver looked in at the row of gleaming boats and asked Talley “Is this a boat factory? I didn’t see a sign.”
Talley laughed, “I guess it kind of is, but they’re not for sale they’re kit boats that we’re building with friends.”
They drive got his dolly from the truck and began unloading the motors and rolling them into the workshop. Pete checked the boxes and when he was satisfied that they had no visible signs of damage he signed the delivery receipt.
Whiskers came over to take a look. The motors were long shaft models meaning that they could be mounted high on the transoms and still have the propeller reach into the water. They wouldn’t be used often, only when there was no wind, or when maneuvering in very tight quarters. Special transom mounts had been ordered and would be installed with all stainless steel hardware. The family went back to work and continued until it was time for lunch. Callie and Maggie had made bacon lettuce and tomato sandwiches and beef vegetable soup.
Dinner would be a festive affair tonight. The MHL was playing the Snow Ball Classic tomorrow night and Callie and Maggie had prepared a special menu for the players and fans. Tonight the family would be enjoying the same meal at home as the fans in the stands. They would be taste testing the menu s that Maggie and Callie could adjust any seasonings that might require a final tweak.
After lunch Pete and Thomas went out to the shop again but this time they had a clipboard for each of the boats and they checked off the work remaining on each of the vessels. They were still waiting for the names of the boats so that the sign painter could be summoned to apply the names in gold leaf to the transom and bow of each boat. The Pawty animals seemed to be having trouble narrowing their choice. Originally they had considered “Bay City Kitty” most recently they had thought about, “California Dreamin” Pete told Thomas, “I’ll check with tonight, and tell them if they don’t make a decision, we’re just going to put a question mark on the transom.”
Thomas laughed and said, “Well, that would certainly be original.”

Pearl Mitch and the kids had made excellent progress, but their boat still required a great deal of work. When the checklists were completed, Pete said, I think we can finish the rest of them up with a few more full days of work. Then we can all concentrate on Pearl and Mitch’s boat.
They stopped a moment to admire the display case that Whiskers, Flower and Ralph had constructed. The dark oak gleamed, The display lights would cast a warm glow over the precious momentos that Talley had given Whiskers for their first anniversary. Pete admired the carved detail that Flower had done. He hadn’t used the computer driven carving machine, but had created the intricate carved roses and leaves by paw. He was a remarkable skunk.
The clip boards were hung at the helm of each vessel and would provide a reference indicating what work remained to be done on each boat.
Pete and Thomas returned to the house and found the kids making new Pennants for both the Royals and the Peasants. Flower said I don’t think we should call the non-royal kitties peasants, somehow it seems to denigrate them. I think we should call them “commoners” like they do in Great Britain. Pete explained that it wasn’t meant to denigrate, it was more a form of teasing. Flower accepted that and continued working .
The Snowball Classic was a great tradition in the MHL one that they all hoped carry on for many years.

Hi there, Kitties! It's Hedley!
Yeah, it's the same up here, Orangie. Cold mornings, warm afternoons and no rain in sight.

We have a mew member of the outside clowder. Mom thinks it may be one of the kittens she brought into the shelter for adoption. It's a no kill facility, and if the kit doesn't get a home after a length of time, it's returned, TNR'd, to its furamily. Mom wishes they had contacted her, though.

The kitty has a tipped ear, so Mom knows it's been through the TNR program, vaccinated, de-crittered and spayed. The kitty is small and kinda scruffy looking...but she's not actually scruffy. She just looks that way because she is a long-haired black kitty with a gray undercoat. Her natural markings make her look unkempt. Mom seems to remember one of the little kitties she had trapped fitting the description, but at the time, Mom just thought she WAS scruffy.

If that's the case, it's probably why she never got adopted...she's a really homely little gal, but at least the clowder seems to be slowly accepting her. Now that she's showing up for food, she's starting to put on a little weight, as well. Mom can't get close to her yet, but she's named her Newbie, and will be working to socialize her.

Purrs, Hedley

Hurry, Whiskers! Time's a-wastin'!
It’s Beer Can Appreciation Day and we have just about missed the whole thing! Honestly, ya can’t get a good secretary around here for anything! And we can’t possible miss this special day THIS year of all years! Didja know it’s the beer can’s 80th birthday this very day? Oh, not THIS beer can, but “the” beer can.

American Can Company had been workin’ on the beer can dilemma 1909, but they had one big problem. The steel cans tended to explode from the 80 lbs. per sq. in. of pressure. NOT a great sellin’ point, mol. It took about two more decades for ‘em to figure out that lining the steel cans with the same material used to line kegs would keep them intact. It was 80 years ago this very day, on January 24, 1935, when cans of Krueger’s Finest Beer and Krueger’s Cream Ale hit the shelves in Richmond, Virginia—and quickly sold out.

So let’s toast the humble beer can …. a work of engineering genius! The outsides are a canvas for creative artistic minds and then the Inside, well, that’s just good stuff. Come on, appreciate those beer cans a little faster! It’s only 5 months till the 3rd annual Mallowwood Beer Can Boat Regatta and we have a whole lot of cans to empty before then!

Oh, that Shockwave Flash! That does tend to slow us down, we're often gettin' error messages about that thing! Every time we start to slow down, Mom checks whether it's outta date and usually it is. She just updated it a couple of days ago. We've heard of that duplicate plug-in problem and watch out for it. Glad your Mom found it & I hope you've got smoother sailing for a while now! -- A. Cats communicate in a variety of ways. One way is by sound. The sounds of a cat can have various meanings. A meow can be a friendly greeting or it may express curiosity, hunger, or loneliness.

Purring usually means contentment but cats also purr when they are sick. When cats hiss or growl, it indicates fear and anger.

Cats also communicate through body language. A friendly cat may greet someone with his tail raised vertically but a frightened or angry cat flicks his tail from side to side, arches his back, and puffs up his fur.

We have to say, it's better to have a new record
high temperature than a new record low. We had one of those last week, and it was very low. It did get very chilly in here the other day but we all survived. Mom and Dad just wish they knew what causes the pilot to go out on the boiler in the first place. It makes no sense, and Dad has fixed everything he can think of that would cause that.

Lugging two gallons of water to the buckets would be pretty hard for your Mom so it's good that you "allow" her to use your stroller. Otherwise she would be too tired to push you!

That does sound like a good price for those beds. I doubt that Mom will buy us one though. We have lots of warm places to sleep as it is.

Mommy is sick and miserable, so we have to run. Hugs, KC and the Zoo Crew

Hi K. Whiskers,
Well yes, we do have snow, about 3 inches so far. And, it is snowman snow too... Mom said that if we get more we may just make a snowman/women. That should be fun. Hehehe.!!! This morning Mom dusted the bedrooms and then decided to call it quits. That made me happy because that means time for us kitties. It is a great day to cuddle up, watch tv and maybe even snooze. More snow is on the way so we figure we need to rest up for additional shoveling. I hope that you having a wonderful day as well. Take care and keep warm. Purrs and a hug, Mittens...

The family was in a good mood when they returned
from hockey. KCK had won their game and they’d had a really good time watching the other games. The family had enjoyed the delicious Meal that Callie and Angel Maggie had prepared and now they were watching the Disney video Planes. The kids could recite the dialogue verbatim but they still enjoyed every moment of it.
Pete said, “Who would like to see the progress that we made on the boats this afternoon?”
All of the kids said that they would. Thomas said, “Come on Mitch let’s take a look.” Annabella urged Pearl to come along and soon everyone was on their way to the work shop. Pete had left the heat turned up while the fiberglass resin cured. The workshop was warm and cozy. Pete switched on the lights and they all looked down the row of boats under construction. They gleamed under the fluorescent lights. Pete pointed to the empty construction cradle where Talley’s Toy had been, and said, “That cradle sure looks empty doesn’t it?”
Whiskers said, “It does, doesn’t it. Talley was smiling, when she said, “What could we put there, Pete?”
Pete turned to Mitch and Pearl, and said, “We got a little something for you. We kind of thought it might be a good wedding present, but now that we think about it, we believe it might be a better pre-wedding present.”
Talley pulled the sheet off of the box and she and Callie pushed it across the smooth floor and said, “We thought you might like to open this now. Pearl and Mitch came over to the big box and Mitch carefully removed the bow and began un-taping the paper. Pete handed him a small pry bar and he carefully removed the top of the box. Pearl stood on tip toes to look in the box. She asked Mitch, “What is it sweetheart?”
Mitch was almost speechless but he reached in and withdrew the construction manual. He showed her the picture on the cover, “It’s our own, Pocket ship, Pearl, Our own little sailing yacht.

Whiskers said, “With all of us working on it we should have it ready to sail in the spring.”
Pearl asked, “Can I help build it, will you teach me how?”
Mitch embraced her and said, “Yes my darling Pearl, You can help and so can our kids, This little boat is going to a labor of love.”
Pearl hugged Mitch and said, “Go get the kids.”
Mitch hurried into the house. The kids were still watching Planes. He said, “Kids pause your movie, and come out to the workshop. There’s something I think you’ll want to see.”
The kids jumped up and followed Mitch.
When they came into the work shop, they looked at the big box, with curiosity. Pearl said “kids this is our first wedding present, and it’s for all of us.”
Tabitha asked, “What is it, mama?”
Pearl said, “It’s our own sail boat, just like “Talley’s Toy”. We’re all going to build it. Come Spring we’ll all go on sailing adventures with Uncle Pete and Whiskers and the whole family”
Flower’s eyes were wide with excitement. “When can we start, mama?”
It was Mitch who replied, “Well, tomorrow is Saturday, there’s no school, Uncle Pete says we can use this cradle, so I say we start tomorrow!”
The kids applauded and laughed, Flower said, “what will we call it?”
Mitch thought for a moment and then asked Pearl, “Pearl what about “Pearl’s Pride”.
Pearl shook her head, “No, my pride is right here, you’re all the pride of my life, maybe we could call it “Pearl’s Pleasure”.
They all smiled. It would be “Pearl’s Pleasure.”

They went back into the house, and poured tea, coffee and hot chocolate. The kids were so excited that there would be no going to sleep for a good long while. Flower opened his kindle and in just a minute he had the Pocket ship video playing. In the kitchen, Pete Whispered something to Thomas and Thomas looked amazed.
They drank their coffee and Mitch who had brought the construction manual and drawings inside, spread the on the dining table. Flower and the girls joined him. Thomas went over too. Mitch showed them how the hull sections would be wired together, and then epoxied. He told them that they would all work on that part of the assembly tomorrow, “Now”, he said, “You better get to bed because we’re getting up early and going to work on our boat.”
The kids hurried up stairs and began getting ready for bed. Pearl hugged Whiskers and Pete and then each of her sisters (that was how she thought of them) and said. I never expected to have anything like the life I have now. It’s not so much the lovely things, but I have a warm snug place to be, wonderful food, The best family in the world, the perfect husband to be and the best kids any mom ever had. I can’t imagine why I’ve been so Blessed, but I’m sure going to try to share my good fortune with any one I can help.”
Talley said, “Pearl, that’s why you’re so Blessed. The Lord can see into your heart and he knows that whatever he gives you, you’ll share.”
It was late when they went to bed, and as Talley and Whiskers finished their evening prayers, Whiskers pulled back the drapes to look outside. The storm had arrived with a fury. The snow was blowing sideways and visibility was so low that the boathouse was almost invisible. A few light showed on the dock but they too disappeared in the gusts.
Pete made a note on his phone to call CLC in the morning to order another boat, and after searching the internet he had decided to order the long shaft Honda outboards that would propel the pockets ships when there was no wind, from CLC. He would place that order tomorrow as well.
Pete climbed the stairs and sat at his desk. He called Neekah Boo and the chatted for a while. He smiled as he envisioned her soft fur and sweet smile.
When they rang off, He took his cup of steaming hot tea to his reading chair, put it down on the side table and went to change into his pajamas and robe. He went to the tall book shelf in his room and selected a volume. He smiled, the volume was by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow a collection called Seaside and Fireside published in 1850, He thought it appropriate for this evening’s reading and he lit his fire. Soon pleasant warmth more cozy than that furnished by the central air system filled the room. He took a sip of his tea, now only pleasantly warm, and began to read;
The Secret of the Sea
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (from Seaside and Fireside, 1850)

Ah! what pleasant visions haunt me
As I gaze upon the sea!
All the old romantic legends,
All my dreams, come back to me.

Sails of silk and ropes of sandal,
Such as gleam in ancient lore;
And the singing of the sailors,
And the answer from the shore!

Most of all, the Spanish ballad
Haunts me oft, and tarries long,
Of the noble Count Arnaldos
And the sailor's mystic song.

Like the long waves on a sea-beach,
Where the sand as silver shines,
With a soft, monotonous cadence,
Flow its unrhymed lyric lines:—

Telling how the Count Arnaldos,
With his hawk upon his hand,
Saw a fair and stately galley,
Steering onward to the land;—

How he heard the ancient helmsman
Chant a song so wild and clear,
That the sailing sea-bird slowly
Poised upon the mast to hear,

Till his soul was full of longing,
And he cried, with impulse strong,—
“Helmsman! for the love of heaven,
Teach me, too, that wondrous song!”

“Wouldst thou,”—so the helmsman answered,
“Learn the secret of the sea?
Only those who brave its dangers
Comprehend its mystery!”

In each sail that skims the horizon,
In each landward-blowing breeze,
I behold that stately galley,
Hear those mournful melodies;

Till my soul is full of longing
For the secret of the sea,
And the heart of the great ocean
Sends a thrilling pulse through me.

Pete put his wolf book mark on his page, closed the book and climbed into bed for a good night’s sleep.

Thank you for your quote about tails.
You have some good quotes!!

01/23/2015 07:04.51 PM Report This Comment

A cat's tail is an extension of his backbone. Cats use their tails to keep their balance. When a cat is falling, he whips out his tail and twists his body to land on his feet.

Cats also use their tail to communicate. For example, a happy cat will walk with her tail held high.

Cats can live without tails. Manx cats are born without tails. Many of them have a short stub but they are mostly known for being entirely tailless.

Dear K. Whiskers & Family,
Hey, 69* is getting on up there! We had 77* today for a high. It's like Winter only comes when the sun goes down. Then it dips into the 40s. Your Mom is still having to lug water out for the animals. I think that is such a blessing to them.

We are staying safe and warm. I'll give Mason and my pawrents a warm hug from you all.

Thank you, my dear BFF, for sending "Your Special Angel". Of course it made my Mama cry, but she loves it and says thank you so much. It is a precious poem.

Thank you for my vote. You and your family are always in our prayers. I am enclosing a vote for you and wishes for you and your family to have a very blessed evening.

Purrs & kitty kisses,
Angel Malachi

Hi Whiskers and Family!
So, you had a chilly walk this morning, huh? But then it got up to 69? That sounds like a great day to me! Our low this morning was 34 and it climbed all the way to 38! It has rained almost all day, too! Not a good day to be outside, so we didn't go out much.

I'm sorry that your creek is all dried up, again and your Mom is having to haul water for the animals. She is such a caring person to do that for them. I think my Mom and Dad would probably do the same thing. Can't stand to see any critters hungry or thirsty!

Yes, the brat came home and I think he was happy to be in where it was warm and dry. He still tries to escape, but Mom and Dad keep a close eye on him whenever they have to open the doors. He'll finally give up and go to sleep on Mom's bed.

Well, Pumpkin and I were put into carriers and taken to the vet this morning. We both got poked and prodded and then got 3 shots! OUCH! Actually, we didn't mind that part. But we were both very happy to get back into our carriers. I was quiet all the way, but Pumpkin voiced his opinion all the way there, while we were there and all the way home, too! He's such a baby! And Mom and Dad picked up Shorty. They said he was a great kitty and he didn't give them any trouble at all. He came in the house for a little while, but he was really anxious to get out, so Dad went out and fixed him up a place in the little garage, but blocked off the dog door, so he couldn't get outside. He has a litter box, water and food in there and Dad goes out to see how he's doing a few times a day. And Dad turned on the heater in there, so he could stay nice and warm. He has a nice bed up high on some old sleeping bags. He usually sleeps on those when he goes in on his own, anyway, so it's like home to him. Dad said he used the litter box, too! He got all of his shots, and now he goes back in a month to get the 2nd distemper and leukemia shots. I don't envy him having to go back!

Mom and Dad had a disaster this morning, cuz a water pipe broke and flooded the kitchen and living room. Dad was supposed to work from 11am till 8pm today, but he had to call off, so he could fix the plumbing and then he and Mom had to clean up the mess and try to dry everything out. It's been a rough day! Dad still has fans going to dry the carpet. But most everything else is okay.

We had a very cold and rainy day today. And tonight we are under a winter weather advisory from 9pm till 6am tomorrow. We're expecting 1-2 inches of snow. Dad has to go to work in the morning, so I hope the roads won't be too bad for hm.

Thanks for the story about the fern eater. It was cute and just what we'd expect from a kitty. Mom is happy that we don't eat plants!

So, I'm gonna say goodnight for now and I'm leaving you a furry vote with love and wishes for a blessed evening and sweet dreams and prayers for you and your family. Take care and I'll catch ya, later. Love ya!

Heated window beds? Count us in! We'll have to get Mom to look into those for us. It is wonderful that Ebony and Sugar Bear are doing so well in their forever home!

I wish that we could enjoy the outdoors but it is way too cold. It has been right at or just about freezing lately but that's still too cold for us to go outside. Yesterday there was no heat in the house for several hours and that was plenty cold enough for us! Hugs, KC and the Zoo Crew

After he finished his breakfast, Pete pored himself another cup of coffee. He said, “We have a lot to do today. I need to check with Lucy and Sylvie about moving something up from the hangar to the work shop. We want to work on the rest of the boats. And of course we have hockey tonight. Also, I’d like to visit the Excalibur community while the weather is relatively good. I know most of you would like to go along that would be great.”
Talley said, “Whiskers and I would definitely like to join you for that. “
Pete asked Raven and Ms. Murphy if they would contact Monty, The Pawty Animals, A K Malachi & Ana and Thundie and Cherish to see if they had made decisions on the interior furnishings for their boats. He said, “I’ll check the weather and get the Bell 412 prepped foe the trip to Excalibur.”
Angel Maggie asked Pete, “Do you suppose that on your way to Excalibur, you could stop by the wolf cave and drop off some of the maple cinnamon rolls that we made this morning.”
Pete nodded and said, “We’d be glad to do that, Maggie do you, Callie Whitey and Orangie want to come along, maybe trade recipes with Victoria?”
Maggie said, “We’d all love to, but I’m not sure we can spare the time. We have to finish preparing the Southern Hospitality feast for hockey tonight.”
Whitey said, “Go ahead, Maggie. Orangie and I can stay here and finish what needs to be done.” Maggie looked at Callie and Callie said, “Let’s do it, Maggie, we should be back in time to lend a paw getting everything ready for Lucy and Sylvie to transport.”
The plan was set and Pete opened his laptop and began to prepare for the flight. Normally he would simply file a VFR flight plan and it would be a simple matter to fly to the wolf cave and then on to Excalibur, but with the low clouds and intermittent flurries he would be flying IFR all the way and needed to file the longer IFR flight plan. He checked the weather and found that the big storm system that was coming would be bringing more snow high winds and colder temperatures to the area. It was due sometime in midafternoon. He filed the flight plan and went to his room to change.
Whiskers and Talley went to change as well, putting on extra layers, topping it all with their leather flight jackets. Whiskers took his jacket from the hanger in the closet, and looked at it fondly. He said, I remember the day that Pete gave this to me. You were watching, and I was so proud that I could hardly keep from jumping for joy. Of course I I didn’t because I was trying to look really cool, trying to impress you.”

Talley smiled. She came over to him and embraced him. “It worked, Whiskers; I thought you were the coolest new pilot I had ever met!” They kissed and went downstairs.
Tuna knocked at the back door and Orangie went to greet her. Tuna said that Pixie and Luna still had the sniffles but that their throats weren’t sore any more. She said, that Serena was taking care of them, while she made the trip to Excalibur.
Pete had pulled the Suburban around to the front door and it sat idling, the engine warming up so the heater could warm the SUV.
Raven and Murphy were both on their cell phones and Pete came out and climbed behind the Wheel. Maggie and Callie sat huddled over their laptops working on a menu for Saturday’s Snowball Classic.
When Talley and Whiskers climbed in and buckled up, Pete shifted into drive and drove carefully down the road. At that moment the snow seemed to have stopped. The road was still clear from the morning’s pass with the snow plows. As they drove through the security gate at the airfield Pete said, “We’ll do the preflight in the hangar and roll the helicopter for the final checks just before take-off.”
Whiskers said, “At least we won’t freeze.”
The flight line crew had placed a heater in the cabin of the Bell 421, and it was comfortable as they ran the cockpit checks. Pete disconnected the power cord and stored the heater. He and Whiskers connected the towbar and rolled the chopper out onto the tarmac. Talley was in the right seat. She ran the prestart checklist with Pete confirming the settings. Pete contacted the tower, requesting a takeoff from the tarmac, as the helipad was under a thick blanket of snow. The request was granted. Pete activated their flight plan, and Talley engaged the auto-start sequence. The throttles moved to start position, the turbines began their low whine and after three sharp snaps of the igniters they roared to life. The instruments settled into the green zones and Talley rolled in throttle and pulled the collective. They hovered, tilted forward and gained speed, climbing out as they went.
They were in thick cloud at 500 feet. Talley shook her head, “I hope the visibility is better than this at the Wolf Shelter.”
It was better, but not much. The bright flash of the landing strobes was visible as a bright pulse beneath the cloud. Talley Pulled to a hover and began to descend slowly. At three hundred feet they broke out and could see that the Wolves had cleared the helipad. The

clearly marked H on the ground was a welcome site, as was Phillip standing just outside of the entrance to the cave to greet them.
They touched down and the rotors spun down. Whiskers climbed out and helped Callie and Maggie out. They hurried to the cave, stopping to give Phillip a hug and then taking the baskets of still warm cinnamon buns inside. Phillip and Pete shook paws and they all went inside. “Thanks for clearing the Helipad, Phillip. It really helps to not have that snow blowing up around the chopper when you’re landing.”
Phillip said, “You’re welcome, actually it was Carlos who cleared it. He does it several times a day. He says if we ever have need for medical evacuation or other emergency there might not be time to clear the Helipad. As soon as he heard the helicopter, he switched on the strobes.”
Pete knew that the wolves had an almost supernatural sense of hearing, but was surprised that it was that keen. Of course the following wind would have helped the sound carry.
They walked inside and Pete looked around. He saw Carlos and waved. Carlos was one of the younger Wolves, big muscular and despite all of Pete’s protests to the contrary, he remained convinced that Pete was a wolf cat, sent directly by God to help the wolf pack survive and prosper.
Carlos came over and hugged Pete in a very firm grasp. Pete thought, not for the first time, that it was a very good thing that Carlos was a friend. As strong as he was he would be a very dangerous enemy.
Carlos and Phillip were anxious to show Pete what angels Lucy and Sylvie had done to the living quarters. They had enlarged the cave, providing two wings of special purpose rooms. In general the pack preferred to sleep in one big community room, but the addition of the new spaces allowed the pups to sleep in their new bedrooms while the adults were active in the evenings. There was a new library with computers and a reading room. There were dedicated classrooms now, and new laundry facilities. The kitchen had been enlarged and the dining made larger too. The fact that they habitat was built into the mountain, made it easy for the new heating system to maintain a comfortable temperature and good air circulation.
Pete was pleased to see the pups were enjoying their schooling. He smiled when he saw that their assigned reading was Treasure Island. He remembered well the time when Flower and his sisters had read it and talked like pirates for weeks. Talley and Whiskers were playing with the pups who had been given early recess to greet their guests. All of the pups

wanted to know why Flower and the other kids hadn’t come. Talley patiently explained that they were in school.
It was a good visit. Pete told Phillip that they had better be going as they wanted to visit Excalibur and be home before the next band of weather came in.
Carlos carried a case of the finest dark Maple Syrup out to the helicopter and when everyone was aboard and the area clear, Talley started up and they lifted off.
The wind was stronger on the coast and as they approached Pete glanced at the harbor where the boats were rocking at their berths. He knew that the crews were aboard doing maintenance and getting ready for their next trip. They landed on the new helipad. They were met by Edward and some of the young toms who immediately began to unload the supplies and gifts that the family had brought.
Edward led them on a tour of the new facilities. He was proud and grateful. “This is a home beyond anything we could ever have imagined. Thank you, Thanks to all of you.”
Tuna hugged him hard. “Edward this is the home that you all have always deserved.”
Talley was delighted to see the happy reaction to the gifts of shell necklaces and souvenirs that they had brought from Tahiti. The toms loved their Tahitian shirts and a few had even put them on. Whiskers told the boys, “These will be great come spring, but if you go out wearing them now, you’ll freeze.” The toms laughed and said that they were just modeling them for the lady cats.
Edward invited them to stay for lunch and Whiskers sniffed the air, smelling a wonderful seafood stew. Pete looked at his watch and said, “We’d love to join you, but the weather is pushing us. How long till it’s ready, Edward?”
Edward said, “It’s ready now.”
They all sat at a long table in the new community center. The stew was delicious and was served with hot crusty bread. Whiskers finished his bowl first and was gratified when a pretty little cat brought the tureen to him and said, “Please Whiskers have some more!”
Edward pointed to the bright spacious craft room, and said, “The kittens absolutely love doing crafts in there. I’ve been a little surprised at how much artistic talent some of our young ones have. I guess they never had a chance to develop it before. We were always busy looking for our next meal.”

Pete nodded. “Well, now they have the opportunity to develop their talents. That’s a good thing.”
Edward agreed. As they looked out, snow began to fall. Talley said, “I think we need to get in the air, the storm isn’t going to wait for us to have dessert.”
They said quick goodbyes and hurried to the helicopter. Edward had sent a case of lobster tails and a case of fresh cod with them and Callie and Maggie were already planning a seafood family dinner for Sunday evening.
The weather wasn’t too bad but the radar was showing a very heavy storm cell approaching fast. Talley put on more speed. As they approached Castle Field, the tower informed them that the Helipad was still not cleared and directed them to land on the tarmac.
Back at the house, Ms Murphy, Raven, Pete, Whiskers and Talley changed into work clothes and made their way to the work shop.
Raven and Ms. Murphy set about marking off the colors for the interior furnishings, while Pete and Whiskers began wiring the boats and installing the electronics. Talley was in charge of pulling the cables into the tight openings in the back of the electronic boxes.
They had been working for almost two hours when there was a tap on the door. It was Angel Lucy. She asked Pete, “Where would like this package? She pointed to huge box hovering two feet off the ground. It was wrapped in red paper with silver hearts and a huge red bow. Pete smiled at his angel sister and said, “Put it in here by the wall. Whiskers and I have a couple of furniture dollies to put it on so we ca roll it out when Mitch Pearl and the kids come in.” Angel Sylvie looked over the big box to see where Pete was pointing. She put her paw on it and guided it effortlessly into place and then lowered it on to the dollies. Talley covered it with a sheet and they all stood back to admire the work that they had done on the boats.
