Hi Mischief!
Wow! You are still getting rain I see and lots of it! I'm glad your pawrents made it home safely from church. That is wonderful that Shorty and BC both showed up to eat, even though it was raining. I hope they stayed dry under the porch. We are always praying for those 2 kitties.

The outside kitties were on edge this morning, as was Mom when she opened the garage and smelled skunk! My Mom got out her flashlight and tennis racket and went out walking along the street, to hopefully scare it away if the skunk was still nearby. Thank goodness the coast was clear. Not sure what Mom would have done if she had run into the skunk. :( Whitey and Orangie ate fine; everyone just seemed a bit nervous.

I left a vote with purrs and hugs. Thanks for the concatulations to me and Talley on our engagement! We are two happy kitties! I will absolutely let you and your family know when we set a date. It's hard to believe a kitty as pretty and special as you doesn't have a boyfriend. I bet you just keep them all at bay! MOL! See you tomorrow dear furiend.

Recently a cat loving family had their red female cat, Angel Rhuby cross over the Rainbow Bridge. The cat mom of this family decided she would like to adopt another red female and as luck would have it, there was Rosie at the Petsmart Adoption Center. Rosie #252822 and her new mom bonded instantly and Rosie came to her new home that day. Rosie was at the shelter for over two months and was a bit wild. She didn't like being kept in a cage and would fight with the shelter workers when they tried to put her back in her cage. This was a big reason why Rosie #252822 wasn't adopted sooner; she was scared and the people looking at her were not patient with her until her new mom came along. Now at her new home Rosie #252822 is a cuddle cat with her daddy and loves to play with her brother Yogi. She gets along with the rest of her furry siblings and is a happy cat. Rosie #252822 will not eat dry food but she will eat any kind of wet food. She doesn't like dry treats either! Rosie loves to play with her furry mouse and the laser light. Rosie #252822 is happily spoiled now in her new home and we are very happy she has found a wonderful loving home. Rosie would be so honored to have a COTD badge to display on her page. Hi Mischief!
Well, I finally popped the question to Talley! Meow!!! I asked her to marry me and she said YES! I keep thinking I am dreaming, but when I pinch myself I know it's real. Talley has made me the happiest cat in the world! We haven’t set a date, but when we do I will be sure to tell all my furiends.

The outside kitties are doing fine. Mom spends more time with them than she does with us! Just kidding. But it does seem like that sometimes. After they are finished eating, Callie and I are always waiting to run into the garage to see what went on in there. Mom thinks we will be fine when we finally do meet face to face!

Hi Mischief!
This morning my Mom was with the outside kitties for over an hour. I was getting pretty tired of waiting! Mom sat on the floor again, to get to eye level with the outside cats, and Whitey really liked this. Whitey kept rubbing her face all over Mom & purring. Mom’s clothes were covered in fur! Callie and I were quick to check it out, sniffing to see whom she had been with. MOL!
Orangie was reluctant at first, but then would sneak behind Mom, sniff her and then go running away. Mom didn’t move and Orangie kept coming back like it was a game. Sniff and Run! Afterwards the kitties ate, not really noticing any scents from Callie and me. (I really think I need to spray that cat carrier. MOL!) Mom says this was a good morning. :)

We are always praying for Shorty & BC. I wonder if we will want to fight with the outside kitties when they come in? Maybe just squabble for a while! MOL! We shall see!

Hi Mischief!
That is so wonderful that Shorty spent the entire night on your front porch! Aw, he feels like he has a home at last! Wouldn't that be great if the swelling under his eye went away by itself?! We are praying real hard for that to happen. Shorty and BC are always in our prayers. You and your whole family are too dear furiend!

My sister Callie and I got to play in the garage inside Whitey & Orangie’s cat carrier yesterday. We even ate out of their dry cat food dish! I tried to bring one of their catnip mice toys back inside with me, but Mom caught me and put it back. Aw, gee Mom! So this morning when Mom fed them, Whitey starting sniffing around, Orangie too. Then Mom said they both started rubbing their faces all over everything. We think this is a good sign. Afterwards, they both ate as usual and Whitey sat by Mom’s feet, taking her after-meal bath. Our dear furiend, Angel Q. Miss Millie had a good idea. She suggested Mom sit on the ground to be more at eye level with them. Whitey seemed to like this, but Orangie wasn’t too sure, so he kept his distance. Mom is going to keep doing this, hoping Orangie will eventually come around.

This sweet kitty joined the angels in February 2013 after losing his battle with complications that developed after being hit by a car the month before. He’d survived having both legs broken & surgery, but was unable to walk & had to drag himself to the litterbox. He was very brave & stayed a very sweet boy during all of the pain, infections, examinations & becoming a foster; but the angels knew that his life would not be a full one with his disabilities & thus called him home. Please pounce by to paw ANGEL CRASH #248838 a vote today so that his foster mom will have a fond memory to cherish & so that this sweet angel can earn the honor of making his star the most brilliant in the night sky tomorrow night.

The Taste Sense Of Cats - (from PetSpeak)

Cats are blessed with a keen sense of smell. So while humans can smell broiled lobster, a cat can smell something like “broiled Maine lobster shipped in brine.” Despite their incredible sensitivity to smell, cats aren’t too concerned about taste. Of all their senses, taste is probably the least important to cats. Humans seek culinary perfection, but cats are mainly interested in whether the stuff they’re about to eat is nutritious or dangerous.

Cats tend to be more picky than dogs. One reason for this is that they’re carnivores, and spoiled meat is best left behind for scavengers. Another reason is that they’re, well, cats, and cats are generally more particular about life than dogs. Because they care more about what they put into their mouths, it’s tougher to slip them day-old food or extras like medicine.

Cats do seem to have one blind spot when it comes to taste: They have a very limited ability to identify sweets. While most animals prefer food with sucrose in it, cats don’t seem to notice it. In fact, researchers found that cats could not tell the difference between sugar water and plain water, even when the sugar level was so high that it was potentially dangerous.

Although flavor isn’t the most important thing to cats, food certainly is. It gives them a sense of comfort and well-being even as it satisfies their appetites. And it can be a powerful tool for communication as well. If you give a pet food he really likes, you’ll get his attention in a hurry.

Cats are creatures of habit, which means they’re most comfortable when they’re in familiar surroundings, with familiar people and familiar tastes. Just because people want to try different foods all the time doesn’t mean cats do too.

It’s fine to change foods periodically. Cats may get bored with the same food after a few months and will crave a new flavor. Let them have it. But make the change slowly by mixing some of the new food in with the old food for a few days. This will prevent diarrhea or other digestive problems that may occur when pets suddenly start eating something new.

THE ABILITY TO TASTE: The reason dogs and cats snack out of the trash can with the same gusto that they have for cleaning out their food bowls is that the food we throw out often has appealing flavor & aromas. There’s a significant difference in the number of tastebuds between pets & people. Here’s the comparison:

Hi Mischief!
Thank you for the good idea you had about placing the top of the cat carrier, half way on, half way off. My Mom found some old newspaper crates she is going to place next to the bottom half of the carrier, and place the top part of the carrier on top of the crates. Then she can slowly start inching the top of the carrier, onto the bottom. This just might work. I will tell you tomorrow how it goes. Thanks again dear furiend!

This morning after my Mom finished feeding and playing with the outside kitties, Mom let Callie and I in the garage (with the door shut of course) to sniff the cat carrier where Whitey & Orangie eat. We both ran to give it the once over. I even stepped inside the bottom half where they eat. Mom laughed while we sniffed and rubbed our faces everywhere. I thought about spraying the carrier, but Mom saw me and shouted OH NO! She’s no fun. Doesn’t she know that’s a sign of kitty love?! MOL! Mom is going to let us do this every day and see if the outside kitties notice and react. Baby steps …

We're so relieved Shorty came back home. One can only wonder where they go when they don't come home. It's very nerve wracking on our Moms!

At least the swelling on Shorty's face hasn't gotten worse. We are always praying for Shorty and BC.

Hi Mischief!
My Mom still hasn’t worked up the nerve to put the top back on the cat carrier. Orangie is getting so brave with letting Mom pet him and scratch behind his ears. Mom doesn’t want any setbacks just yet. We got a smart tip from our furiend, Sir Malachi, to toss a couple of catnip toys into the carrier. It really got Orangie’s attention. He even batted the catnip stuffed mouse around a couple of times! They both eat their food while standing in the carrier without a problem. This is amazing progress.

I hope BC and Shorty are doing okay. How is the swelling on Shorty's eye? We are keeping them both in our prayers.

♥ Our SPECIAL Message by SISSEE 11531 tonight!

♥ This year, we would like to do something different with our 10th Year Adoptiversaries by introducing a SPECIAL kitty to you! While mom and dad was cleaning and going thru everything in the back room, mom came across a picture that she couldn’t find for a long time and thought it was gone forever. This picture is of a precious tiny kitten and will remain in mom’s heart♥. This tiny kitten’s name was PRINCESS KNIGHT and she was mine, Suezee’s & Rhoamin’s littermate sister.

♥ When we were just tiny kittens, running wild & free under our fur mama Baby’s 13286 care when PRINCESS found a way to our neighbors’ yard [mid July 2003] who has a Yellow Lab. That Lab was let out in their back yard and he seen PRINCESS. Mom & dad heard the little screams of pain & came running out in the back yard. The neighbor got a hold of their dog and dad went over the fence to get PRINCESS, but it was too late for her as dad handed her to mom. Mom was in such tears. PRINCESS was only 10 weeks young when she was killed. To this day, that dog is still next door to us so mom always worries us outside kitties.

Hi Mischief!
Today is housecleaning day and we already saw Mom getting the mean ole vacuum cleaner out of the closet! Time to head for our safe spots in the backyard. The temperature was 90 degrees yesterday, so hopefully Mom finishes quickly so we can come back inside without all the housecleaning noise!

The outside kitties were fine this morning. A small, baby raccoon was eating from the dry food bowls, but Whitey & Orangie didn’t seem scared of him. They both came out of their Igloo when Mom opened the garage door and the raccoon went scurrying off. My Mom doesn’t like to chase baby raccoons away, but knows they could hurt the cats. :(

We hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day with your family yesterday!

ITALIAN CAT BRINGS GIFTS TO HIS LATE MASTER'S TOMB –

ROME - The story of a cat who visits his master's tomb and brings him little presents on an almost daily basis a year after the man's death has moved the inhabitants of a village in central Italy.

"He brings little twigs, leaves, toothpicks, plastic cups. A bit of everything really," Renzo Iozzelli's widow Ada told AFP from Montagnana, a mountain village near Florence.

"Sometimes he comes with me and sometimes he goes on his own. The whole town knows about him now!"

Toldo the cat -- a grey-and-white three-year-old tomcat -- followed Iozzelli's funeral procession last year and has continued going to the cemetery ever since, a habit usually ascribed to dogs.

"He loved my husband. It was something else! Now it's just me, my daughter and my son-in-law and he's very affectionate with us too," she said.

Ada said the journey to and from the cemetery each day had tired Toldo out in the cold winter weather.

"He's not going out so much these days. He's caught a bit of bronchitis so he's sleeping next to me."

BRAZIL INMATES TRAIN CAT FOR PRISON BREAK –

BRASILIA - A cat trained by prisoners to deliver cell phones and tools to dig tunnels was caught at a jail in northeastern Brazil after sneaking in with forbidden items strapped to its body.

"An agent saw the cat and went to look at it closely because something about it seemed wrong," Marcelo Avelino, the head of the prison guards' union, told the O Globo newspaper.

The agent found a bag tied to the animal's body filled with saw blades and drill parts for concrete drilling and digging tunnels, along with a cell phone complete with battery and charger, Avelino added.

The cat had often been seen coming in and out of the Alagoas jail.

Prison officer Luiz de Oliveira Souza told the G1 news website that prisoners had raised the cat and that relatives would often take it home after a prison visit.

"We were very surprised by this new tactic of prisoners, who trained the animal so that it returned to the prison and even managed to carry materials,” the agent added.

We hope you all have a Happy Mother’s Day. Mom gave the outside kitties a special treat of Fancy Feast Salmon Feast and they loved it. We got some freeze-dried Salmon Fishies & Shrimp Snappies that Mom ordered through the internet. We made out pretty good for not even being mommas. We did surprise Mom with a bouquet of flowers delivered yesterday, but Dad tried to take the credit with us. MOL!

BC and Shorty are so funny! 2 different houses, those silly cats! We sure hope Shorty is going to be okay. We will keep them both in our prayers.

wishing you all.....
a very happy mother's day there! janet's just starting on our page seeing she just finished the other side and will have to try making things shorter as she's always dragging things out which takes to long. got some of the nettles pulled around the edge of the herb garden as well as the fence she's gonna do tomatoes eventually on and will tackle more of the stuff with thick gloves some this afternoon and more of it the next two days before it turns to warm to be outback and down on all 4's. she planted all the herb seeds she had and will mix in other veggies like cukes, maybe pumpkin or squash or beans when the time comes there as it's not fenced in. all other seeds/plants will have to wait till after memorial day as it's traditional here when most threats of frost passes, but the past 5-6 years we've had frosts into mid to late june as it was 2 years ago and many lost fruit crops 2 years running! looks like it's gonna happen again either tues/wed mornings. hoping to get the weed-ing done before it heats up to much mid to late this week back into the 70s and 80s after lower 60s for the next two days! sports day is wednesday this week. sandy, ana, haley, angels

OUCH! I'm sure BC didn't mean to scratch your Dad. We cats just swipe at whatever is nearby when we are upset! We are glad to hear the 2 kitties are coming to eat on a regular basis.

We hope your Mom can get Shorty to the vet to have that swelling under his eye checked out. My Mom talked with our vet about Whitey & Orangie, asking if she can bring the 2 cats in when she does catch them. The vet listened to Mom's story and said Mom could be bring them in anytime, with just a call to the vet letting her know Mom would be coming. I bet your vet would be understanding too. Good luck to your dear Mom. We will keep her and the kitties in our prayers.

Our outside cats, Whitey and Orangie really like their Temptations treats! Mom said they should be in a commercial for the treats, because when she opened the new bag this morning, they both came running up to her. First they ate their canned Sheba food. Then afterwards they got treats. Mom put the Temptations into the carrier and the two cats went right in to eat without hesitating. My Mom is going to try this for a couple of days and then put the top of the cat carrier back on. Then we’ll see how much they really love Temptations!

Hi Mischief!
The outside kitties, Whitey & Orangie were both famished this morning. My Mom was topping off their dry cat food bowls with some Whiskas Temptations from my cat food stash, when Orangie got excited and pushed his head into Mom’s hand, asking to be rubbed. Mom was pleasantly surprised and happily obliged. Orangie purred and ate the Temptations. Later, my Mom will go down to the store to buy more. She didn’t realize how much the outside kitties would like this special treat. I would share mine, but a cat can only be selfless for so long. MOL! We think Orangie is starting to like Mom!

Oh no! I sure hope the swelling on Shorty's eye goes away by itself. We will be praying for the dear kitty. I'm so glad you liked my blogs about how cats love. I always knew we were extremely lovable! MOL! I hope you are having sunny weather and enjoy your day sweet furiend. Our thoughts and prayers are with Shorty & BC.

Hi Mischief!
This morning the 2 outsides cats, Whitey and Orangie, used the top half of the cat carrier as a scratching board. Both of them used the sides of the carrier to rub their face. It was funny. At least they are getting used to seeing the top. Now Mom just has to put the top back on without frightening them! My Mom is determined to get them both into that carrier!

Callie and I are always watching Mom from the window when she feeds the outside kitties. Then when Mom finally comes back inside, we run over to smell her legs. I think we are getting to know the outside kitties from that. We just hope they will like us when we do finally meet. Mom thinks it will be fine. She will take it very slow.

Here are more ways that cats express their undying affection for us:

8. Cats Love with Kneading. Kneading behaviors—front paw treading on soft surfaces—hearken back to kittenhood. Kitten paws knead against the mother cat’s breasts to induce milk to be released. Adult cats continue the behavior when they’re feeling most relaxed and content and loved, and that’s often when being petted on the owner’s lap. Kneading is an obvious expression of adoration.

9. Cats Love with Playing. Kittens play out of pure enjoyment, and many never outgrow playtime. Some cats may actually control the interaction of petting by moving just out of reach—so YOU must go to THEM. Their most favorite playmate typically is a trusted, beloved companion.

10. Cats Love with Sleeping. As sleep champs, felines typically sleep up to 16 hours a day. Because they are most vulnerable during sleep, the place your cat chooses to snooze must be a secure and trusted location. There is no greater loving compliment than a cat choosing your lap for a favorite sleep spot.

11. Cats Love with their Eyes. A kitty’s eyes are proportionately very large—if human’s eyes were the same proportion, our eyes would be eight inches across! As such, cat eyes are important assets for survival, yet extremely vulnerable. Cats that place their faces and wide-open eyes near a human express great trust and love. A slow “eye blink” from across the room is considered a cat kiss.

12. Cats Love with their Butts. This is another “back handed compliment” that cats offer to only their most trusted, beloved people. Because kitties identify each other by scent, butt-sniffing is the equivalent to a very personal hand shake. When your cat jumps on your lap and presents her tail in your face, the invitation is obvious—not that you need to sniff!

13. Cats Love with their Tails. In a similar fashion, the “elevator butt” pose invites you to give special attention. Simply scratch her above the tail. Cats also signal their love when they approach you with the tail held straight up, and the end slightly tipped over. Kittens use this to greet their mother—and adult cats continue to treat their favorite humans like a beloved mom, with tails flagged high in respect.

14. Cats Love with Meowing. Cats rarely meow at other cats. Kitty uses these vocalizations specifically to interact with her people. Do you make a point to talk with those you dislike? Neither do cats! Even when kitty pesters you with lots of meows, she’s interacting with you out of love.

It sounds like your Mom & Dad have pilling a cat down to a science! MOL! Do you know I have never had to swallow a pill before? Oh, oh. I probably jinxed myself!

I'm so glad BC came when your Mom called out for him. How cute is that?!

Here’s an update on the outside kitties :) My Mom was going to try to put the top half of the cat carrier back on, to see what kind of reaction she got from the outside kitties, Whitey & Orangie, but she got a little nervous. Instead she placed the top of the carrier next to the bottom part, where the two cats have been eating their food without a problem. When she opened the garage door, the two furbabies ran inside as usual, but stopped to check out and sniff the top half of the carrier. Afterwards, Whitey wanted to eat, so she walked to the open bottom half of the carrier and ate, with Orangie right behind her. So now they’ve seen the top half of the carrier. Hopefully it won’t be as scary to them. We shall see!

There's no doubt that cats love us as much as we love them. People who haven't been blessed with furry feline love have a difficult time believing this though, because kitties show affection very differently than people do. In fact, some cat behaviors that puzzle, aggravate or even offend people are a cat's way of expressing undying affection.

1. Cats Love with Purrs. Her purrs can mean a variety of things, from delight to expressions of concern. And kitty purrs range from soft and subtle to Mack-truck loud. When your cat purrs in your presence, you can be sure she’s expressing her love for you.

2. Cats Love with Bunting. When a cat cheek-rubs you, head-bumps your face, or pushes against you, he leaves his scented signature. These behaviors, termed bunting, are expressions of affection cats display to other cats, dogs-and their most favorite people.

3. Cats Love with Spraying. Say it ain’t so! But it’s true—if your cat has decided to baptize your bed or other belongings with urine, you should consider it a back-handed compliment. Cats use their own scent to calm themselves down. Kitties feeling upset over separation anxiety or other issues often target areas that smell the most like their beloved owners…such as the bed.

4. Cats Love with Rolling. When kitty throws himself on the ground at your feet, and rolls around, consider this a loving greeting and a solicitation for attention. Presenting the tummy in this fashion places the cat in a vulnerable posture. So cats generally reserve the rolling around for people they truly love.

5. Cats Love with Scratching. Just as with the spraying, cat scratching leaves both scented and visual marks of ownership. Pay attention to where your cat scratches the most. The areas most important to kitty often are related to those places associated with the owner, like a favorite chair where you sit.

6. Cats Love with Gifting. Mighty hunter cats that catch everything from toys to bugs, mice or frogs, often share the bounty with those they love. Kitties who present you with this bounty deserve praise. They wouldn’t bring these special gifts if they didn’t love you.

7. Cats Love with Grooming. Cats spend an enormous amount of time self-grooming. They also groom each other, but shared grooming behaviors only happen between friendly cats. Kitties that groom their human by licking your skin or hair, or even nibbling or sucking on your clothing, indicates great affection. This spreads familiar scent and helps mark you as an important part of her family group.

Hi Mischief!
My Mom bought a soft foam pad to put in the cat carrier, the cat carrier she is trying to get Whitey & Orangie into. Mom sprinkled the floor of the carrier with catnip, placed the foam inside and then covered it with soft blankets. This morning the two cats stepped tentatively inside. Feeling the soft floor, they seemed to approve and ate their breakfast without a problem. Tomorrow Mom is going to try to put the top half of the cat carrier back on, to see what kind of reaction she gets. Keep your paws crossed.

Purrs and hugs to you dear furiend. I hope Shorty and BC came home to eat and hopefully your weather is better.

THE PILL -

Before you even attempt to give your Cat a pill
Be sure you can do it or you will end up ill
To give a Cat a pill will be no easy task
Protective clothes are needed plus a clawproof mask
For after the pill gets past that cute little nose
It must pass a canyon of razors where no finger goes
Hold tight to those legs that have very soft paws
Because behind them are daggers that can win any wars
So take this advice before you give that pill to your pet
Take your Cat in the car and leave the pill to the VET.

The outside kitties are fine; especially since the early morning weather is warm. Whitey & Orangie were eating their breakfast in the open cat carrier when the neighbor’s cat from across the street came over to see what we were doing. Orangie ran for the Igloo. Mom was scared when she saw Whitey scrunch up and hiss at the neighbor’s cat. Now we know how Whitey has survived the past nine years. The cat couldn’t run away fast enough. Mom stood very still until Whitey relaxed and came over to rub on Mom’s leg. Mom couldn’t help thinking what a shame it is that Whitey has to live a life of “survival of the fittest.” We just have to get those two cats inside.

My Mom thinks it will help a lot when the outside kitties get neutered. Mom says it helped me calm down. I guess I was a bit of a wild one. MOL! I'll leave my blog for today on one of your fursibs page. Have a wonderful day sweet kitty!

Please paw by & meet this beautiful Champagne Point Tonkinese kitty. KAYLIN #251700 is not just a beautiful face she is also a CFA Champion & a Mom. She was hand picked for her new parents by her sister Wendy's breeder when she found out how sick Wendy was. But this sweet girl was already a mom so her new parents had to wait to bring her home. All of her kitties found their furever homes & then she had her Big Girl surgery. She was finally able to come to her new home in January. She wasn't sure if she wanted to stay at first, but her new parents gave her lots of love & support so we are happy to report she is settling in quite nicely. KAYLIN #215700 spends her days hanging out on Mom & Dads laps, playing with her toys, & napping in the sun. She also likes to tear through the apartment at top speed and has been known to do it in the middle of the night too. I'm sorry to hear about all the rain you are getting. I hope your house is okay and the outside cats are staying dry! I'm glad you don't get hairballs. I hate it when I have to cough them up. Yuck!

Well, my Mom went grocery & cat food shopping yesterday, coming back with lots of food for the outside kitties and treats for us! I think my Mom feels bad about not being able to vary our primary food, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have treats! In moderation of course. MOL! Today Whitey & Orangie had Friskies Rise & Shine Egg Scramblers (recommended by A.Q. Gracie) and they ate it right up! Mom gave me a taste, but I sniffed it and ran off while Mom was laughing. Mom said I looked like I was running off because I was afraid! Hey, I thought she was trying to poison me! I never get new cat canned food, only treats! So much for my career as a taste taster!

Happy Cinco de MEOW!

This blog will coincide with one of my favorite cultural events, Cinco de MEOW.

It’s a day devoted to celebrating feline culture, rather like every other day of the year, but with the addition of fish tacos.

To be clear, it’s not just a day about cats. It’s a day about cats and couches.

Most people do not understand the important history of this day. Cinco de MEOW commemorates the anniversary of the first day a cat and a couch were brought together, in ancient Egypt. Cats have never forgotten this, and instinct calls kitties around the world to observe this judicious pairing of cats and furniture with a holiday nap.

Cinco de MEOW is a time for carousing on the couch.

I will be napping in my usual place all morning, and then living it up with an exciting afternoon on the other end of the sofa. I expect the stroll from one end to the other to be a special highlight of the day. You will want to be sure your couch is ready for the fiesta!

As a human, it’s important that you support your cat to have the best possible Cinco de MEOW.

Fluff the pillows
Wait on your kitty
Prepare special foods
People like to add a Mexican flair to Cinco de MEOW, which is fine with cats, as long as you make sure to add tuna to everything.

Okay, on a more serious note… This Cinco de Mayo, Humane Societies across the nation will be throwing fiestas. Kitten season is the perfect time for this new event, Cinco de MEOW. Cinco de MEOW promotions at Humane Societies are basically a good way to promote adoptable cats and let people know that they have a lot of them who need homes this spring.

Although kittens can be cute and cuddly, it’s important to not forget that adult cats need a family too. They’re a lot easier, because you don’t have to go through all the kitten phases and you can bond just as well with them.

Some cat lovers say that when it comes to getting a pet, cats do not get the consideration they deserve. Operations Coordinator Denise Plemmons says, “I don’t think a lot of people realize what a good friend they [cats] can be and good support through hard times. They are a part of your family, becoming companions you can lean on if you need to.”

Because dogs gave higher adoption rates, the theme for Cinco de MEOW is helping cats overcome odds. This Cinco de MEOW, Humane Societies are striving to adopt as many cats as possible. It takes only one person to make a difference. Every adoption is marked as a success!

Hi Mischief!
This morning my Mom ran out of the Sheba can food for Whitey & Orangie (because today is shopping day), so she gave them a can of my Science Diet Hairball Control food. They loved it! Mom was surprised. I told Mom she better replace the can that she used from my stash! When Mom goes shopping today, she is going to try a variety of canned cat foods and see which ones they might like. I have to eat hairball control Science Diet because the vet recommended it for me because of my long hair. Callie has to eat prescription food bought from the vet because of her bladder problems. So now the outside kitties get to have variety. I’m feeling a little left out right now. MOL!

A Fitting Finale - by Nancy Kucik

Laser was a therapy cat for more than twelve years, and in that time I was fortunate enough to see him do many amazing things & spread a tremendous amount of happiness. One November evening, though, his gift of empathy surpassed every expectation I ever had. We were visiting the local children’s hospital shortly before Thanksgiving. As we were hurrying to the elevator to visit the children on the oncology unit, a woman tapped me on the shoulder & asked if Laser could visit with her daughter in the lobby before we went upstairs.

Of course I said yes. She led me to a teenager in a wheelchair. Both the girl & her mother told me how much they loved cats, & how sad they were because theirs had died only a few weeks before.

Laser was a world-class snuggler. From the tiniest child, whose lap was so small that he had to do some serious contortions in order to fit, to the largest adult, Laser had a reputation at the hospital for always finding a way to curl up & cuddle.

That’s why I thought it was so strange when Laser did not curl up onto the teenager’s lap. Instead, as soon as I placed him on the girl’s lap, he climbed up & positioned himself with his chin resting on her shoulder & the length of his body pressed against her chest.

A big smile lit up the girl’s features as she blissfully closed her eyes & rubbed her face against the soft fur of Laser’s head & back.
It wasn’t until I had been watching this happy interaction for several minutes that it suddenly dawned on me that the girl was not using her hands to pet Laser, and in fact her arms were paralyzed.

Did Laser somehow know this girl was unable to use her hands to pet him? Is that why he so uncharacteristically cuddled on her shoulder rather than her lap? I don’t know, but I don’t have any other explanation.

That encounter was especially poignant because it turned out to be Laser’s last therapy visit. At age 14, he died very suddenly & quite unexpectedly just a couple of weeks later.

While I was devastated by his loss, the thought of all the joy he brought over the years & the difference he made in so many lives makes me smile. There could be no more fitting final chapter in the life of this amazing therapy cat than that experience at the children’s hospital. I know Laser’s spirit will live on not only in that girl’s heart, but in the hearts & memories of everyone else whose life he touched.

Hi Mischief!
We're so glad Shorty is making himself at home. We wish our outside kitties would make themselves at home here during the day. Someday!

My Mom fed the outside kitties this morning and she was out there for over an hour! Callie and I were waiting for our breakfast too! Mom came in finally and said, after Whitey ate and rubbed against Mom’s legs, she sat down right next to Mom, sort of leaning on her and began to take a tongue bath. Whitey just took her time, looking up at Mom every now and then. This went on for quite awhile. Mom didn’t want to move, frightening her away. Finally Whitey finished her bath, rubbed Mom’s leg and walked back over to her Igloo, where Orangie was already sleeping again. My Mom wanted to just grab Whitey and bring her in the house, but knows that isn’t the way to do it. She does feel like she is really winning their trust though. We just hope the 2 kitties can stay safe.

For The Love Of Cats – A Human Introspection

Of all the animals who have shared our lives for generations, we know the least about the cat. That doesn’t mean we love them any less; in fact, the air of mystery each cat carries is one of the reasons we love them so much. Cats have never changed to suit our desires. They play by their own rules and we love and admire them for their independence of spirit.

Cats started hanging around us because we were useful to them. Our switch from hunter-gatherers to farmers meant that we attracted lots of fat, little rodents to our grain stores. The cat has been welcome in our barns ever since, and by our hearths as well.

Few cats have to earn their living today and many have lives that keep them completely indoors, hunting for little beyond a warm place to sleep. More than 20 years have passed since the cat claimed the title of #1 pet over the dog, and the gap just keeps widening.

The closer we get to our cats, the more we find to love them. They offer warm companionship, endless entertainment and soothing comfort. Science concurs; pets in general- cats in particular, are good for us in countless ways. They keep us busy, keep us from being lonely and even help keep us healthier.

We can’t imagine living without animals in our lives. We love cats, from the purr of a new kitten’s greeting to the last sad good-bye of an aged friend. We love the snuggles on the couch while watching TV, the silly games with a string toy or laser pointer, the sharing of a joke or a secret or even a bit of our dinner. Our cats are always with us, in spirit even when they cannot be with us in person.

Every cat lover knows cats don’t care who you are or what you look like. They love us regardless. Cats teach us, heal us, make us laugh, and break our hearts with their passing. Cat people understand the benefits of feline companionship because we live with cats, love them, and care for and about them. The strength of the human-animal bond and the growing importance of pets in our lives is phenomenal. We humans celebrate the CAT.

How cute BC and Shorty came running when your Mom called Cookie. I think the cats have found their furever home! Thanks for the birthday wishes and goodies yesterday. You are a dear furiend!

This early morning it was warm and very windy. We are expecting a high fire danger alert today. The outside kitties seem to like it, the warmth at least. The wind, not so much. My Mom has no idea where Whitey and Orangie go on hot days. Hopefully it will be inside here soon. The two cats ate their food from the cat carrier, but the top is still off. They seem a bit more relaxed when stepping inside the carrier, so that’s progress!

A Word With Whiskers – May 02
Whisker’s Furever Home – by Mom Mandy

I had always been a dog person, having had 2 big boys, an Airedale-Terrier mix and the other a Pointer. Both were rescue dogs and they were the loves of my life for 12 years. When they crossed the Rainbow Bridge within one year of each other, I thought my world had ended.

I would come home from work and sit in the backyard staring at the empty doghouse. With 2 big dogs, a cat in our yard was a rare sighting. One evening I noticed a black & white tuxedo cat staring at me from afar. When I tried to approach her she would hiss and run away. I started leaving food out for her and the next day the bowl was always empty.

My spiral into depression continued. I missed my dogs so much. My husband decided to take me away on a trip to Hawaii. Two weeks later a surprise awaited us on our return home.

Our empty doghouse had been used by the black & white tuxedo cat to give birth to her 5 feral kittens. I didn't know what a feral cat was, but I learned quickly. We left food for the cats and tried to catch a glimpse whenever possible, but the mother was guarded and we respected that.

One morning when I was leaving food out I noticed the mother was gone. 5 small kittens were left crying and hissing as if calling out for their mother. I thought they were adorable, but my friends said beware of feral cats for fear of disease or physical attacks. I got on the internet, learned about Trap-Neuter-Release techniques, and set out on a mission to save these babies.

It took several days, but I did manage to get all 5 of the kitties fixed. I released them back into our neighborhood, prayed and waited.

They came back one by one, as I always put food out morning and night. I had names for them all - Howlie, Patches, Whitey, Callie and Whiskers. One day I noticed Howlie was gone. I checked the local animal shelters, but Howlie never came back. Soon after Patches was gone too.

I decided to put up a cat fence around my yard and try to trap the remaining 3 kitties in my yard. What an adventure that was! Callie came willingly. Whiskers came back next, but he was injured. We fixed him up and he has never left since. Sadly, Whitey is still outside, but she comes home to eat ever day. I pray every night that one day Whitey will come inside and be with the family that loves her.

Hello Mischief
Tomorrow (Thursday) is officially ♥Brothers &Sisters Day♥ a day for siblings to celebrate one another. Our siblings have a huge impact on our lives (some for the good, some not-so-good).

Siblings are truly a special blessing (did I really just say that?!) so be sure to appreciate and cherish your bothers & sisters. Another reason to celebrate is that not everyone is lucky enough to have siblings (like Mommy who is an only child).

So don’t forget – tomorrow celebrate that special bond and let your siblings know just how special they are to you. Whitey & Orangie are doing fine. They ate their food from inside the cat carrier again. We are not sure how they will like it when Mom puts the top of the carrier back on. We shall take it slow.

About Whiskers and His Family – An Introduction

I am so happy to be your COTM candidate this month. Happy May Day to all of you and thank you for the many Happy Birthday wishes to my fursisters and me.

Let me begin my first blog by telling you a little bit about myself and my family, and how we came to be.

I’ve been a CC member since Jan. 2012 & I was voted CROTD in August 2012 and COTD in September 2012. In September 2012, I earned my wings as a pilot in the Royal Squadron studying at the Royal Flight Academy under the instruction of K. Pete (72572). I met and fell in love with his beautiful fursister, Talley (88476), who officially became my girlfriend on December 12, 2012, without question, the happiest day of my life.

My pawrents were life long fans of canines before us, and it has taken them several years to finally recognize that cats are individuals, unlike any other pet, with many unique traits adding to our feline mystique.

Entering the world as feral kittens, the angels of good fortune took pity upon us and brought us to our furever home. Even though my Mom knew absolutely nothing about cats, she would never turn away an animal in need. So we had a safe haven, but we still were not really a part of the family. Cats were thought of as adornments – no interaction necessary or needed. How wrong we proved that misconception to be.

It wasn’t until my Mom retired from her job, now spending time at home with us, did she really begin to notice what wonderful, loving companions we could be. But now what, she wondered? They don’t like to go for walks and they don’t fetch or catch Frisbees. So my Mom turned to the Internet to find out what cats are all about. After extensive research, reading and getting to know one another, we’ve finally begun to appreciate and partially understand each other.

Together, we have been reading everything we can about us amazing felines. My pawrents are learning to appreciate this fascinating creature, the Cat. My fursister Callie and I have turned this once “dogs only” household into a haven worthy of cats. We have an outside fursister named Whitey, who still is not convinced about being an indoor cat, but we are adamantly working on changing her mind. I hope you enjoy my daily blogs, sharing what we’ve read and enjoyed together.

I’d like to thank Queen Trixie (#172636) for her wonderful reign as our Queen for April 2013. She was a great leader who will be missed, and we wish her a happy retirement! This morning, let’s give a warm CC welcome to our beautiful new Queen Spunky (#161265)! See you at the Coronation!

This morning the temperature was 35 feels like 34 with the humidity @ 92% & the wind is 9 MPH N. Today's suppose to be Sunny & High 70.

Wow! Two years ago today [5/01] it was a frosty Sunday morning when I was hit by a car and barely survived! The ER Vet almost lost me on the xray table and had to stop. They had to get me stablized and warm. To this day, mom swears that it was the frosty morning that saved me as it slowed my blood flow and such down! Well, the good mews is, mom says you would never know by looking at me that I was ever hit!

Mom has been opening mine and Kittzi's 160203 window and turning on our ceiling fan the last several days. We enjoy laying on the window sill with the warm sunshine on us and fresh air! We also have been watching mom and dad while they're in the back yard as well as the outside kitties.

For the next several months we may not be on too often as mom and dad will be xtra busy. We will try to get on when we can!
