What I love about my owners: One thing I love about CC is how we kitties can come together, have fun and form friendships, without any of the things that might normally divide our humans even mattering. Who cares where our pawrents live, how old they are, how much money or education they have, or any of those other millions of things that humans can get hung up on? They’re our pawrents, they love us, and they let us come here to be just as goofy or as serious as we want to be. We laugh and cry and have fun together, that’s the Spirit of CC and of the Castle.

How We Met

(July 1, 2012) Thank you from K. Mike:
As I make one last round after passing the crown, I want to revisit my acceptance speech for a minute. In it I told about how, a few months before my campaign as I was bringing congratulations to a Cat of the Day, I overheard some words of wisdom being left by our retired King Pete on behalf of his little sister Talley. It seems appropriate that I should remember and share that message one last time.

This wise kitty said that his little sister sees each vote toward a CC badge as more than just a click on a computer keyboard, but rather as a little bundle of good wishes and friendship. These bundles rise up from homes all over the world, joining together to form little streams of happy wishes. The streams run together, forming rivers of love and goodwill. The rivers circle the earth and come together in a mighty torrent of joy, rushing down in a shower of friendship and love. The badge then becomes a visible symbol of this outpouring of good will.

That message has kept coming back to me these past two months, not only while receiving votes but also while visiting you kitties and pressing YOUR vote buttons. I know most of us have probably felt that shower rush over us. Well, now we know what it was.

Thank you again for sharing my COTM adventure. – Mike

hi its Neekah Boo
Hi hey its going to be hard for a little kitten to keep up. For weeks there was nothing and my mommy was so freaked out. I ate everything I saw on the floor she must have vacuumed twice a day that didn't matter. I would eat my litter yummy!!! Now that I'm locked up in my crate what seems like forever. I dont get in so much trouble but don't get me wrong my mommy lets me out lately for short periods of time and I find things that freak my mommy out. I eat my carboard litter box when I get board I try to eat the prettu strings on her robe. And one time my mouth was bleeding so bad she rushed me to that eeky place "VET" only to find out I had two teeth coming in at the same time. Anyway you have such pretty pictures and outfits and wow your mommy is very talented. My mommy is way behind the curb but we are learning. I will keep you all updated. I go back to scary place in a few weeks for a check up. Thank yoy for visting me. Meow meow remember to snuggle snuggle Love Neekah Boo

Hi King Mike!
Thanks to you and Lady Dolly for the help cleaning up. I never believed I had so many furfriends! And all the treats and toys and gifts that were brought! I was overwhelmed with love! By all means help yourself to any leftovers you find, although I think I put away quite a bit! I feel the pounds, but what a way to go! It was a very special day for me and I thank you for being a part of it.

Mom is still trying to clean house since she got back from her trip. Dad did a good job taking care of us while she was gone, but he did a lousy job cleaning up. Dad didn't understand the intricacies of cleaning kitty litter. You have to do it several times a day! Anyway, we have all new litter in all our boxes, fresh water in our fountains and clean bedding. It's nice to be back to normal.

Thanks again for being a part of my COTD celebration! How do Kings and Queens do that for 2 months?! It must take at least a year to recover!

I left you a friendly vote with lots of purrs and hugs.

Dear King Mike,
I am doing so much better and my mom is taking great care of me. She makes sure that I get my medications everyday and all. I really don't like her feeding me the soft food, but she has to sprinkle some kind of powder on it and well, I am a big boy but i won't eat it. So, she feeds it to me. But now my brother Wonka is my Mom's concerns right now. He got real sick from an hairball problem that he had a difficult time throwing up and well, it is a real long story. Anyway he has to have surgery for it, because of his Vet. She was a very stupid Vet young and fresh out of Vet school and didn't do what my mom told her to and now my brother had to have his fur shaved off and all and surgery. Really she should be locked up for her stupid mistakes she almost killed my brother! He is only 6 years old this August and well he is still just a baby. After he had his surgery he is home now and is doing a little better. He needs lots of prayers. Willie.

Come visit me, Sir William Isaac & Wonka.

**CMR’S APRIL WRAP-UP & COTM NEWS FLASH**
We bid farewell to April & the showers of sadness that saturated the community as so many of our longtime CC friends made their journey across the Rainbow Bridge. Life is fleeting for all of us so please remember to share your love & compassion with your friends as often as possible since none of us knows what the future will bring our way. A new month right around the corner brings forth optimism for all community members & the bursting blooms of May flowers should brighten the outlook on life for many of us in the coming days. May is filled with special days to celebrate (Cinco De Mayo, Mother’s Day, Armed Forces Day & Memorial Day) & is also recognized for the auto racing events that start heating up tracks around the world. Rev your engines sweet kitties & let’s race into the month with enthusiasm because the stadium is packed & the fans are eagerly waiting for the green light to start a new round of COTD candidates plus an incredible COTM entrant.
Before the starting flag is dropped we’d like to thank KING SAMMY #93915 for an outstanding COTM reign that was filled with mystery & suspense as he spun the remarkable tales of his adventures as Sam K Spade, P.I.! His reign will be remembered for many years to come & has mesmerized our members with its uniqueness. Thank you KING SAMMY #93915 for the dazzling job you did of entertaining the community & for making April a month filled with excitement!
We’d also like to thank INDIE #208247 for his great campaign platform about his travels across the country after his beloved first mom became an angel. We know his adopted mom’s calendar was filled to overflowing & he wasn’t able to visit everyone each day, but we’re honored that she accepted the nomination for this special kitty. We’re looking forward to seeing him crowned as our King of May so keep watching for the checkered flag to drop on his race for the crown when midnight rolls around tonight.
And now we see the green light flashing for a new race to begin for our stupendous COTM nominee for May! This month’s candidate is well known to many of you & is filled with happy purrs about running his special campaign. He’s a faithful voter, loyal friend, handsome, & sweet natured so we know you’ll be eager to race to his page each day to paw him a vote. His quiet demeanor is sometimes overshadowed by his sisters’ outgoing approach to life but this charming boy will win the checkered flag to your heart with his enthusiast attitude, dashing good looks & gentle, love filled eyes. Please put your paws together & give a big cheer for our pole position racer for this month…MIKE #161232!!
Please run by his page each day in May to paw him a COTM vote so he can win the race & be awarded the coveted June crown.
Thank you for attending our CMR monthly wrap-up bash & for taking the time out of your busy days to paw votes to our COTD/COTM candidates’ pages as we present them to you. This is the CMR crew waving good-bye at April’s finish line!

I am overwhelmed
by being chosen as the CMR Committee’s May COTM nominee, and by the kitties who are already coming by with words of encouragement. Thank you! The next few weeks are going to be an adventure, and I don’t mind telling you I am one very nervous guy today. That’s why your support means so much!

As we’ve enjoyed the various campaigns and reigns over our time on CC, my sisters and I have sometimes looked at one another and wondered “what in the world would the likes of US ever be able to come up with?” This has been followed by blank looks and expressions of gratitude that we didn’t have to try! Well, now we do, and with their help I’ve put together a campaign that I hope you’ll enjoy. I’ll tell you more about it tomorrow.

Today it’s all about saying Thank You, King Sammy for your most wonderful reign. We’ve loved the detective stories that kept us on the edge of our seats, and the Easter party, Dancing with the Kittehs, the fair and the CC 500. During your reign we were hit with an unexpected time of sadness, and you rose to the occasion with grace & compassion.

Hail, King Sammy! And tonight we say, welcome, King Indie! You are a couple of very tough acts to follow, and I’d just like to say, once again,

Thank You! CC kitties are the absolute BEST! – Mike

Mikey's Meow-velous Mothers -- May 1
Okay, I admit it! I am, as my sisters delight in calling me, a bit of a “Mama’s boy”. So since my campaign AND Mother’s Day both fall in May, what could be more natural than to combine the two? I’ve sent my star reporters (aka Mallow & Evie) out to discover stories of amazing fur moms, some from right here on CC.

Now, before I go any further, let me cover my extremely furry behind: I WILL miss some great stories. It's absolutely a given, and these omissions are purely the fault of my lovely sisters (OW!, Mallow! Let me finish, will you?), because they could not possibly have managed to find every story that should be told. After all, CC has over 44,000 member profiles!

Some lucky kitties never have to leave their mothers! I am SO jealous! A few of our CC mothers who always know where at least one of their kittens are, are Kittzi Knight #160203, Moochie Mooch #216182, Angel Sugar #62813, Angel Amelia #168516, Little Miss #211603. Cleo #8052,Angel Larry #58261, Li’l Bear #188146, Cyndee Foo Foo #160997, Angel June #34620 …. the list just goes on, lucky kitties!

Most of us, though, are like me (sigh!), separated at a few weeks’ old. But our fur moms never quite leave us, do they? Whenever we are snuggled in a soft warm spot, purring and kneading, there they are, right with us! So join me this month in honouring these special lady cats, in my “Mikey’s Meow-velous Mothers” campaign. My brother Angel Smokey #163461 has graciously agreed to keep each day’s message on his page, for those who may miss any and want to catch up.

Wow! I am absolutely stunned by the response to the first day of my campaign! The kind words, the support, even food! You kitties sure know how to make a guy feel welcome! Day 2 of my campaign features possibly the most famous mother cat of all time, SCARLETT.

On March 30, 1996 this little calico was just one more stray in Brooklyn, New York, trying to take care of 4 week old kittens as best she could in an abandoned garage. On this day, however, the garage caught fire. As firefighters worked to put the fire out, they noticed a cat slowly carrying a kitten from the building. Shortly, the same cat went BACK into the burning building and returned with yet another kitten dangling from her mouth. To their amazement, this scene was repeated until, eyes blistered shut, severely burned and missing most of her facial hair, the mother brought out her fifth kitten, touched each one with her nose, and collapsed from her injuries.

The firefighters immediately took Scarlett and the kittens to veterinarians at the North Shore Animal League America, and by the next day the story had captured thousands of hearts and Scarlett was the most famous feline in North America. One kitten did not survive, but after three months Scarlett and the four survivors were well enough to be adopted out to carefully chosen and loving homes.

Scarlett came to be the “face” of the NSALA, helping raise money to help other animals in need. This organization created the Scarlett Award for Animal Heroism which is presented annually to animals who put their life on the line to help others, human or animal. She was also honoured by Great Britain’s Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Why, she even made an appearance on “Oprah”!

Scarlett ‘s injuries healed well, as you can see by her picture on my page (if you can't see her, enlarge the first picture you CAN see and click "previous"). She crossed the Rainbow Bridge at 13 years old and my Angel siblings report that she was received with honours. Many books have been written about this special Mom kitty, my pal Rocky #212159 at the Reading Room can help your humans find them if they want to know more. All my “Mother” stories are also on my brother Angel Smokey’s page #163461.

Mikey's Meow-velous Mothers -- May 3
Today we go WAY back in time to find our special fur mom! Let me introduce FAITH, a stray cat who found her way to St. Augustine’s Church on Watling Street in London, England during World War II. She was not welcomed immediately, but this kitty persevered in sneaking into the building to find shelter. Eventually the pastor, Father Ross, gave her the name of Faith and she was accepted as the official “church cat”.

In 1940, Faith gave birth to a lone kitten, who the congregation named “Panda”. The new Mom and her kitten were doted on and well cared for by all and provided with a warm comfy bed on an upper floor.

One day Faith decided to move Panda down into the cold basement, and was brought back upstairs by her concerned humans. She responded by immediately moving Panda back down to the basement! After a few repeats of this process, Father Ross decided to let Faith stay where she so obviously preferred to be.

That night, there was an air raid. For the next few days, London was besieged and St. Augustine’s Church and the surrounding homes were severely damaged. When the worst was over and Father Ross surveyed the damage, he was amazed to see a very dusty Faith work her way up through the rubble. Thanks to her determination to seek shelter in the basement, her kitten Panda had survived as well!

This story became well known throughout London, touching many hearts and inspiring hope through the darkest days of the war. A plaque commemorating Faith still adorns the reconstructed St. Augustine’s, and in 1945 she was presented with a special silver medal by the Archbishop of Canterbury in a special “Blessing of the Pets” ceremony which is observed yearly to this day!

Faith’s picture can be found on my page, and all my “Mother” stories are also on my brother Angel Smokey’s page #163461

Mikey's Meow-velous Mothers -- May 4
Today’s special Mom kitty is one who I have never actually met, but I smell her on Mom & Dad every year when they go to do her Mom’s taxes. Let me introduce MAMA.

One day, the site manager on a big office building project noticed a pregnant calico cat hanging around the site, foraging for food, looking for shelter and a safe place to have her babies. There was something different about this kitty, though. Where her right eye should have been, instead a large stick protruded from the eye socket.

Luckily for this stray mama cat, this particular site manager had been raised to love & respect animals, and he took her for help. The verdict of the vet, after examining and cleaning the wound as well as possible, was that since the stick didn’t appear to be causing any trouble (besides the obvious!) and may have been there for quite some time, it should be left alone until after the kittens were born.

The cat was taken back to the unfinished office tower and settled into a room near the construction office where she soon had her kittens. For 8 weeks, the cat who was known simply as “Mama” fed, cleaned, and raised her young family with the stick poking out of her eye socket. Word spread among the crew, the little family was well fed and protected and all of the kittens soon spoken for. When the last kitten had gone to its new home, a collection was taken up and the owner of the construction company himself presented the site manager with payment in full for Mama’s eye repair surgery.

After recovering from her reconstructive surgery, this special kitty went to live with the site manager’s mother. She is there to this day, a strictly indoor middle-aged lady who always has a warm welcome and a loud purr ready to greet all visitors. Her picture can be found on my page, and all my “Mother” stories are also with my brother Angel Smokey #163461.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! I tried very hard to find you a mama cat story from Mexico for today, but my staff couldn’t quite pull it off. I want to thank everyone again for the enthusiastic response to my campaign, you’ve been amazing! Me siento humilde.

Our fur Moms are very smart and usually have the instinct to do what’s best for their babies. An example of this is found in a book called “Cat Miracles” (Rocky #212159 has the info!), and today’s fur mom is named TIGER.

Tiger was pregnant when her humans took their annual summer trip to their mountain cottage. They took all of their animals with them, and Tiger’s human Mom made sure to bring the “nursery” box that the experienced mother cat would be needing to deliver her litter during their cottage stay. When it appeared the kittens were imminent the box was placed in a sheltered spot under a tree. In the morning, the kittens had arrived, but not in the carefully prepared box in which Tiger usually delivered at home. This smart mama had recognized that the temperature in the mountains was cooler than at home, and had dug a hole under a thick bush and pulled in a thick layer of leaves for insulation to protect her new babies.

The first night, there was a heavy rainstorm. Their human Mom lay awake all night worrying about how the little family would fare outside, in their cave below ground. Since Tiger was known to be fiercely protective of her privacy in the few days after giving birth, she felt that disturbing them would be unwise and trusted in Tiger’s maternal instinct.

First thing in the morning she went out to check on the kitties, and was surprised to find that Tiger had moved her family from their little cave and had brought them up onto the cottage’s covered porch, where they were resting, warm and dry, in two old work shoes!

We don’t have a picture of Tiger, but a reminder again that all my “Mother” stories are on Angel Smokey’s page #163461.

Mikey's Meow-velous Mothers -- May 6
Today’s special Mom kitty comes from among our very own CC members, and my Angel sister Jezebel says we cannot honour mothers without including this story. So I present to you MABEL #215787.

Mabel was a stray cat, giving birth on a cold snowy Pennsylvania night in a discarded box in a back yard. The humans from the house next door heard her, and although they did not want to disturb the delicate process by moving the labouring mother to their own yard at this point, they brought out clothes and blankets to make a nest for her to finish giving birth in. In the morning before setting out to buy cat food and other supplies, these kind humans told their neighbour what had happened in his yard overnight, and that they would move the little family to their own yard and take care of the kittens until they were old enough to leave their mother.

When they returned, Mabel was at their back door, wailing. Finding this behaviour unusual for a new mother, they investigated and found the nest box gone. They soon found the box, kittens and all, in the home owner’s trash bin. They were just in time, as it was garbage day! Smart Mabel had known exactly where to go for help, and her five kittens were rescued and brought into the house. Her human Mom promised her husband that she would find a good home for the family, and she did – their own! Mabel and all five of her kittens stayed with the humans who had rescued them for long and loving years, until Mabel crossed the Rainbow Bridge in her human Mom’s arms last Valentine’s Day at over 20 years of age.

Mabel’s family has not been active on CC in a few months, but I agree with Angel Jezebel. She is a kitty worth meeting! Angel Smokey is taking good care of hers and all the rest of my special “Mother” stories on his page #163461.

Today’s story of motherhood comes from a book called “Chicken Soup for the Soul: My Cat’s Life”, and it’s about a barn kitty named HOLLY.

Holly was a newcomer to the farm, but she managed to coexist peacefully with all of the other cats except for another female whose name was Darla. For some reason, whenever these two came within a few feet of one another, a full-fledged cat night would break out. Their mutual hatred continued for over a year, until the spring that Holly had her second litter of kittens. As was her custom, she kept her babies in a crate in the hayloft, which she very rarely left.

When Holly’s babies were two weeks old, her nemesis Darla was also ready to deliver a litter. She settled into an old wooden box on the barn floor. Then …. Holly moved in to Darla’s box as well! She began to “mother” Darla, licking and grooming, and curling herself protectively around her new friend while Darla lay there purring. She would return to her nest box to feed her own kittens, and then return to minister to Darla.

As Darla’s labour started, Holly cleaned and nursed each new kitten as a rapidly weakening Darla struggled to deliver the next one. Finally Holly went up to the loft and one by one, brought her kittens down the wooden stairs and moved them into the nest with Darla and her new babies.

Within a few days, Darla had regained her strength and was able to nurse and care for her kittens on her own. Holly and her brood moved back up into the loft, and by the time all of the kittens were old enough to take care of themselves, their mothers had returned to being sworn enemies.

This story and all the rest of my “Mother” stories can be found on my brother Angel Smokey’s page #163461.

Mikey's Meow-velous Mothers -- May 8
Today’s special Mom kitty is one who most of us already know and love. For those of us who haven’t had the pleasure yet, meet ANGEL AMELIA #168516.

Amelia came to the attention of her future Mom and Dad one night in 1997 when they went out to a restaurant and found much more than a good meal. A little gray cat kept slipping into the restaurant, begging for food and attention and being promptly put back outside. Her future Mom’s heart went out to the skinny but very friendly little kitty, and when they left and found her still sitting outside the door, they scooped her up and took her with them. Amelia had found her forever home.

She was taken to the vet, where she was found to be flea infested, undernourished, and nursing a fine colony of ear mites. What the vet did not find out until years later was that this sweet little kitty was also carrying around a pellet from having been shot at some point in her young life as well.

What the vet DID find on this first visit is that Amelia was pregnant. Her very loving new Mom would not consider aborting, so a few weeks later Amelia gave birth to two little boy kittens, Beanie & Bubby #189829 , and her “big girl” surgery soon followed.

Little Beanie at first did not thrive and was not expected to survive. This is when his human Mom stepped in to help Amelia out with round the clock bottle feedings until he got stronger. Amelia and her two boys lived happily together in their new home for 14 years. Beanie & Bubby crossed the Rainbow Bridge one week apart in January 2011 and their loving little mama Amelia followed them a few months later. We CC kitties are all better for having known this lovely family!

This and all the rest of my “Mother” stories can be found on my brother Angel Smokey’s page #163461.

Today’s special mama cat comes all the way from Cambridgeshire, England! Meet JOLIE, a pretty black kitty who went the extra mile for her kittens.

When Jolie’s owners realized that she was pregnant, their solution to the problem was to drive to a rural area and throw her out of the moving car! A passerby saw this cruel act, and kept an eye on the understandably skittish young lady cat for two weeks, before she was finally able to be coaxed into the safety of her new human guardian’s greenhouse. Once this was accomplished, the lady looked Jolie over and took her to the vet for treatment for her face, which had been grazed by her rough landing in the road.

It was also apparent to the vet that Jolie had very recently had kittens. The kind woman contacted the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to make a report, and for advice on how the kittens might also be found and helped.

An RSCPA inspector thought that the only thing to do was to take Jolie back to the spot where she had been thrown from the car, and look around. Sure enough, when Jolie was set down she began to vocalize in a way that the inspector recognized as a mother cat calling to her kittens. But when no kittens appeared, he realized that Jolie was calling HIM. When he got the hint and began to follow, Jolie led him for over 300 metres, through a back yard, across a field and into a farmyard, all the time calling and then waiting for him to follow. Finally, she led the inspector into an old barn and behind a woodpile, where sure enough he found four week-old kittens, who without their mother would very soon have died of dehydration.

You can see a picture of Jolie with her kittens on my page, and her story can also be found on Angel Smokey’s page #163461.

My campaign bus is chugging along, and once again I just want to take some time to thank all of those who are coming by with support as I bring you stories of special mom kitties. If anyone needs an extra dose of “happy ending” after today’s installment, the runners-up in Cat Fancy’s Against All Odds Rescue Cat Contest are up on Cat Channel’s home page.

Mother cats raise their kittens in all kinds of circumstances! Today we want to honour a couple of brave mama cats who did their best in some of the worst conditions. First up is ONYX, the mother of our own Max & Dex #103097.

Onyx had kittens on the way, again. Her humans never bothered to get her fixed, because they never had to worry about finding homes for her litters. They had a pair of pit bulls who (unimaginable, but true!) would take care of that problem for them. So once again, little Onyx got bigger and bigger, knowing that the dogs were watching and waiting.

This time was different, though. Some compassionate human had heard about this situation, and a rescue group called the Cat Coalition stepped in. This time, Onyx got to raise her litter of five and see them adopted into loving homes, before her big girl surgery retired her from motherhood with honours!

BALLERINA #137423 was originally named “Dumpy” after she was found in a car at the garbage dump at the age of 6 weeks. She grew to maturity and eventually had 3 kittens. When the kittens were old enough and a prospective adopter was told that she had to wait a couple of days to see them as they “needed to be cleaned up”, her rescue radar went on high alert.

She discovered the kittens being raised in a dog crate full of feces, with the mother locked in with them at night. Appalled, she wound up taking the entire family! Cleaned up, homes were soon found for the kittens and, with a new and much more flattering name, Ballerina still lives with the kind lady who rescued them.

Mother cats in need are good at finding their way to the right door! Here are a couple whose instincts served them well:

One day a stray appeared on a certain doorstep skinny, hungry, and tired. After one box of cat food, the kitty decided had found a home and was given the name “LARRY (#58261)”. Within weeks she produced three kittens, DUCKIE #51627, RAMBO #89800, and KAY #60171, but the name stuck! Angel Rambo was adopted out and lived16 years. Angels Larry, Duckie and Kay spent their whole lives together, and long lives they were, too. Well into their late teens, these three passed within a few short months of one another, and are now reunited with Angel Rambo at the Rainbow Bridge.

TINA #165764 was badly wounded when she managed to drag herself up to a doorstep where she was taken in and nursed back to health. Two months later, just like Angel Larry, she repaid her new human parents with a litter of kittens. All of them went to new homes except MAGELLAN #165296, who has been with his two mothers, fur and human, for over 10 years now.

Some kitties have homes, but are no longer welcome in them when kittens appear. This is what happened to KALI #72152. A motorist saw a box being thrown out of a moving car, and when she investigated she found a mama cat (Kali) and 6 kittens inside! She loaded the box into her car and took the kitties to a friend’s house, where they were raised until all the kittens were old enough to go to forever homes. Kali was taken for her big girl surgery and now has a forever home of her own, too.

Today’s story is, to me, the ultimate CC “Mother” story, and watching it unfold last year helped me and my family see that CC was so much more than a place to post pictures and do fun quizzes. This is the story of MOM KATHY, her kitties, and the CC community.

Kathy and her 7 kitties were very active and well known here on CC, especially in the Mouse Hockey League. Many friends mourned as over time two of them, ANGEL HANNIBAL #80097 and ANGEL RUSTY #80100, crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

Then, in January 2011, Mom Kathy herself got sick and was hospitalized. During this time, friends and CC members rallied to help take care of the remaining five kitties. Many who could not help in person donated money for food, medicine, and other necessities. Then in April, very sadly, Kathy died. This is when our CC community shifted into high gear and launched a nationwide effort to find her beloved kitties new homes and deliver them safely there.

From Pennsylvania, the kitties traveled: “The Honeysuckle Hauling Company” delivered BENNIE #208164 to Georgia, AMMIE #208214 and GIOVANNI #209850 to Florida (but to separate homes). As he described during his campaign, our very own KING INDIE #208247 and (now Angel) KATO #208249 traveled via the “Phat Cat Express” to a new home together in Massachusetts. By the time all five of them were settled, over 40 CC and a few non-CC Moms & Dads had donated money, time, transportation (or all three!). Many members followed via updates posted on the Catpaign & Mews Room (CMR). This truly was a community effort.

One of the things humans who love their kitties sometimes worry about is what will happen if they pass on before we do. We’re sure that this was on Mom Kathy’s mind as she realized that she was going to leave her fur babies behind. We are also sure that, one year later, Kathy is smiling down from the Bridge as she sees how well loved her babies are in their new homes, and as her sweet kitties joyfully greet one another at each MHL game before heading onto the ice to play their furry little hearts out.

One of Mom Kathy’s babies, Ammie #208214, is today’s special Mother’s Day COTD candidate. Please stop by and leave her a vote so we can see her pretty face in the window tomorrow!

Shhhh! Don’t wake Michael! Mallow & Evie here, sneaking in to beat Mike to the ‘puter this Mothers’ Day morning so we can tell you about a mother close to our “big” brother’s own heart: his very own fur Mom! We even posted a picture of her on his page, sneaky us!

Mike’s fur mom’s name was MOCHA, and besides Mike, her first litter consisted of 2 sisters and a brother, Dipstick, who Mocha’s humans kept. Eventually, both boys in their separate homes came to hit that “awkward age” and started becoming extremely rude. Mike had his big boy surgery and eventually settled down (thank goodness, adds Mallow!)

Our humans started to hear reports about Dipstick being rude as well, fighting with his mother, and peeing all over the house. Plus there were now 7 new kittens! His humans were at their wits’ end. A few times, our Mom & Dad recommended big boy (and girl!) surgery to help promote harmony in the family.

Then one day Mike’s original humans mentioned to our Dad that they no longer had any cats. After finding homes for as many kittens as they could, they had taken Mocha, Dipstick and the remaining kittens to the shelter. That makes us feel sad, and wherever Mocha ended up, we are thinking of her this Mothers’ Day and wish her well.

Now quick, shut the ‘puter off & put everything back the way it was, Evie (tee hee). Won’t Mikey be surprised?

Simba & the BHG family told a story that I just HAD to save for today. It’s about BIG BLACK & FRIENDS #101503, also called the Cottage Kitties. They belonged to Simba’s Grandma and lived with her in the mother-in-law cottage until she crossed the Rainbow Bridge early in 2009. Before she passed, her daughter promised her that she would always care for her 5 precious fur babies as though they were her own. And so these five kitties still live in the mother-in-law cottage, with a nice heater in the winter and air conditioner in the summer. The cottage has a fully enclosed back porch so the kitties can get fresh air and sunshine. They have special Diet food, the best vet care, and get lots of love from Mom and Dad.

Even though Granny has been gone for more than three years, Simba’s Mom is still taking care of Granny's kitties just as she promised she would do. She says it is her way of honoring her Mother, not just on Mother's Day, but every day.

Well, you could have knocked me over with a feather wand yesterday when I found most of my Mother’s Day blog already written and posted. Sometimes my sisters really surprise me!

Some of you have probably seen stories about human mothers who manage to do amazing things like lift up one end of a car when their children are in danger. Well, we felines will not be outdone! This is the “Dragnet” version of an incident that was captured on closed circuit video on the grounds of a security company in Durban, South Africa in September 2011, as described by an SPCA investigator:

“Footage shows a car pulling up and three adult males and one minor male making their way to the (trunk), while looking around furtively. A box is pulled out. Two adult males cross the road and put the box down near bushes off a dirt pathway and place a large, heavy rock on top of box. The car leaves the scene.

“Camera zooms back to the box, movement seen. Shortly after, a cat pushes its head out from underneath rock and forces its way out of box. The cat stays close to the box, surveying its surroundings. The cat moves across into the bushes to survey and within seconds is back, delving into the box. The rock falls into the box. The cat emerges holding a tiny kitten in her mouth and scuttles off into the bushes.”

The box was only 22 cm (about 9 inches) square, and stills from the video show that the heavy flat rock almost completely covered the top. The mama cat and two day old kitten, soon known throughout South Africa as Ava and Basil, were taken to the nearby SPCA. The license plate of the car is visible in the video and charges were soon laid against the humans involved, who investigators noted could very easily have taken Ava and Basil to that very same shelter instead of leaving them to die in such a cruel way.

A picture of Ava and Basil is on my page, they're a little shy so if you can't see them yet, just enlarge the picture of Mocha and click "previous". Their story is also on Angel Smokey’s page #163461.

As we’ve seen in some of our stories, no matter how devoted the fur mom there can be times when she needs a little help. Motherhood can come in all shapes and forms, and having given birth is not necessarily a prerequisite. For the next few days we’re going to honour surrogate mothers, human, animal, male and female. Today’s story comes from among our CC members, and I think it is best told exactly as it appears on this kitty’s page. Mallow and Evie will be standing by with Kleenex while we meet NETTIE #2970 and her human Mom.

“I was 39 years old and very unexpectedly, suffered 3 heart attacks within 4 days. I then required a quadruple by-pass. On medical leave from my job, infected incisions on my chest and legs and a 5 pound weight limit kept me from doing too much. Thinking I could plant a few seedlings, I had my husband take me to a garden center. Found her there, motherless at 1 1/2 days old, siblings had all died of starvation. She stopped breathing twice on the way home. Having to clean my incision several times a day, I wore bib-overall shorts. I carried her in my bib pocket, taking care of her 24/7. She would ride in my bib pocket to the doctor's office each check-up. Without her, I am not certain I would have made it and the Veterinarian said without me, she would have not survived either. She was my cardiac rehab! She filled my time and my heart! We have four feline children, but Nettie and I have a very special bond.”

Sweet Nettie’s account has not been active in over five years, so we don’t know how this story turned out or if Nettie and her Mom are even still on our side of the Bridge. What we do know is that they came together at a time when each were in need, and formed a bond that will last through whatever the years may have brought their way.

A reminder again that if you’ve missed any, you can find all of my “Mother” stories on Angel Smokey’s page #163461.

Now don’t panic, kitties, but a d-o-g has slipped onto CC today. Today I want to tell you about a special surrogate mother, a terrier named ROSIE. Her story is found in the book “Cat Miracles”.

Rosie and her kitty friend Missy were the best of friends. Ever since Rosie joined the family as a pup, the two played together, slept together, and ate together. Rosie never had pups of her own, but when Missy had a litter of four kittens, Rosie was right there to help. She licked the kittens and fussed over them as though they were her own.

Then, Missy was killed by a car. Her humans were sure this meant that they would need to raise the young kittens by hand, but then to their amazement, Rosie stepped in and laid down with the kittens as if to nurse them. At first, they thought the kittens were just snuggling up to Rosie for warmth and comfort, but a closer look showed that Rosie, the dog who had never had pups, was actually producing milk.

One of our own CC kitties, SWEET MIST OF ARIEL #3277, helped a housemate new mother kitty raise her first litter. Even though she had never had a litter of her own, Sweet Mist of Ariel knew just what to do, and even tried to feed the kittens. Unlike Rosie, she did not produce milk, but she was an admirable teacher to the new mom who eventually figured things out for herself.

I appreciate all you kitties for your support in my campaign. Any of my “Mother” stories you may have missed can be found on my brother, Angel Smokey’s page #163461.

Today I want to introduce you to some more kitties who stepped up to help when someone small and furry needed it. You just might see someone you know!

SWEET PEA #33668 was found in a box on alongside a rural dirt road. She had just given birth to a stillborn kitten, and her uterus was infected. She was placed in a foster home, and was to be spayed after the infection cleared up. When she was well enough to go to the vet, he found that she was pregnant again. Apparently an accidental encounter took place in the foster home!

Sweet Pea gave birth to one lone kitten and raised him admirably until he died at 8 weeks old from a ruptured blood vessel. The grieving Mom soon “adopted” another cat in the house to be a surrogate Mom to.

ANGEL SHERMAN #35766’s mother, Missy, was an outdoor cat who needed help when the weather turned cold. She knew where to go, though, and began meowing at the door of the house she lived near. When the human from the house came out on the porch to investigate, she could hear smaller cries coming from the wood pile. There she found Missy’s litter, all of them frozen except for little Sherman, who was peeping insistently. She scooped him up and took him inside. Missy wouldn’t come into the mysterious abode of the humans, but she came to the door twice a day to let her surviving kitten nurse until he had grown a bit more. At this point, two other NICE kitties from the house, Zaboo and Patches, took over the “paws on” mothering, cleaning little Sherman and teaching him good kitty manners.

When the BLUES BROTHERS #70552 were 7 weeks old their mother LUPI died suddenly. They were old enough to eat, drink and use the litter box, but ANGEL SUGAR #62813 and CASHMERE #61835 still stepped in to help help raise them anyway. Sugar took them on adventures, teaching them hunting and other skills while Cashmere licked, cuddled and played with them the way their mother would have if she could.

ANGEL SUGAR came by her mothering talents honestly, by the way. Her own mother, SALEM, was known as “the Kitnapper” due to her tendency, when raising a litter of her own, to swoop up any unattended kitten she encountered and just bundle it in with her own.

Today’s story of surrogate motherhood comes from a book called “Chicken Soup for the Soul: What I Learned from the Cat”. Meet FIDDLE, who was very good at catching mice and rats on the farm where her humans raised sheep.

It was time for the lambs to be born and the farm lady was working round the clock to help the new mothers and make sure the lambs were delivered safely. One little black lamb was born early and the mother was not inclined to take care of it, so the farm lady carried it through the March snow into the house, where she kept a stock of colostrum for such emergencies.

While she was tending to the tiny two pound creature, she realized that Fiddle had followed her silently into the house and was stretched up staring intently at the small creature on her human’s lap. She brushed Fiddle off, telling her that this creature was NOT a mouse!

A bed was made for the lamb in the spare room, the door closed to prevent Fiddle from getting in as the expert mouser continued to be just TOO interested in the new arrival. One night the farm lady, tired from the round the clock feedings and caring for the ewes in the barn as well, forgot to close the door after settling the lamb back down. Coming in for the next feeding, she was horrified to see Fiddle in the box, her head moving sharply up and down. Fearing the worst, she approached.

To her amazement, Fiddle was purring, her paws wrapped around the lamb who she was busily engaged in the business of bathing! When the bath was finished, the lamb got her bottle and was tucked back in with Fiddle curled around her, purring. The door was left open from then on and the lamb, who survived, was given the name Viola.

Today I want to tell you about some more of our CC friends who were hand raised by their human pawrents after being separated too early from their fur moms:

RHUBY #142476 and MR. LUCKY #141955 were abandoned by their mother at 3 weeks old, in the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd. Rhuby was severely frostbitten on her tail and toes, and Mr. Lucky was dangerously cold as well. Both even stopped breathing briefly, but with the care of their loving human parents they grew strong and healthy. Mr. Lucky crossed the Rainbow Bridge in 2008 at the age of 10, and he is greatly missed by his fur sister and his human Mom.

FUZZY #148344 and WUZZY #148613 were part of a litter of 8 born to a feral cat who had been trapped by a helpful human. One kitten died, and these two were the smallest, having fallen behind on their growth. The human’s neighbour took Fuzzy and Wuzzy home, where they were bottle fed and all the other duties of a mother cat were tended to by their new human Mom. Their fur Mom was taken for her big girl surgery and then released on a farm.

ANGEL PEPPER #190344 was born to a barn cat and orphaned at 10 days old. He was found and bottle raised by a loving human Mom. He survived a broken leg while still a kitten, a diagnosis of Lymphoma at 8 years old, finally joining his fur mom at the Rainbow Bridge at the age of 19 ½ years.

MALACHI #194826 had a rough start in life. By the time a motorist stopped to check out the box on the side of the road, the mother and kittens inside it were dead. All, that is, except for one small black one that sat and looked at him quietly. He scooped up the furry handful and presented him to friends who he knew would be able to help. Malachi has been with his forever family now for almost 10 years.

Mallow & Evie found today’s story hiding among the many hundreds of rescue stories on the Animal Rescue Site. We’d like to introduce you to a kitty named COUGAR.

One day a rescue human was doing her volunteer shift on at an Adoption fair and had to bring the two little kittens she was bottle feeding with her. Every time the little babies would let out a peep one of the kitties up for adoption, Cougar, would get agitated and try to get to them. So the volunteer figured, why not see what happens? Well, Cougar got right into the carrier with the kittens and began washing and fussing over them. When one adventurous little fuzzball ventured out the open carrier door, Cougar pulled it back inside. She also tended expertly to the cleaning and toilet duties that are so challenging for humans who are taking care of orphan babies. By the end of the Adoption fair, the volunteer had gotten permission to bring Cougar home with her to help with the kittens. A week later, Cougar even started producing milk and the bottles were no longer necessary!

Pretty cool, right? Well, it gets even better. You see, Cougar had initially come into the shelter from a dog pound, pregnant and with a birth defect that gave her only one eye with limited vision in it. After her rescue it became necessary to remove her damaged eye AND the functioning one as well. So this loving surrogate mother kitty, Cougar, who stepped in to raise the two orphan kittens, had no eyes at all!

After the kittens were successfully reared and weaned, they AND their caretaker Cougar went to new forever homes.

The Animal Rescue site has a lot of amazing rescue stories! Go by and check it out, and while you’re there, click the purple paw button to help feed shelter animals. And if you’re not already voting for your own special shelter, consider leaving a vote for K. Easy’s shelter, the Animal Care Centre of St. John, US Virgin Islands, in the Shelter Challenge.

Today we have two stories of foster “mothers” who are actually male! In fact, our first story features three foster “mothers”. The first is a dog named Huckleberry, who one day managed to find a tiny kitten in his back yard. The tiny creature was less than a week old! Huck knew what to do, and went to his humans for help. His humans brought the tiny little bundle into the house, wrapped in a towel for warmth. He was dehydrated, starving, and had a massive eye infection.

This little baby, who became PADDY #99342, was bottle fed by his human Mom (the second foster mother), and once his infections cleared up his older feline brother COPPER #93709 took over the work of teaching Paddy how to play, use the litter box, and just generally be a cat.

Another male foster “mother” among our CC members is KOSHKA #108393. One day a young boy was given a tiny kitten that his classmate had found. He couldn’t keep the baby, but his mother knew someone who could help – her friend, Koshka’s Mom. Well, she and the little fluffball, who she named KATYA #108396, took to one another right away but of course Katya had to be kept separated from the older male Koshka until they could be properly introduced.

When her new human Mom had to leave Katya alone in her room, Koshka’s ears pricked up at the tiny peeps sounding from behind the closed door. He led his Mom back to the door and pawed at it in concern. When the door was opened, he ran to the kitten and began to snuggle and lick her. Katya and her big brother still like to snuggle to this day!

MORE DOGS! The story of Rosie the dog the other day got some kitties reminiscing. LEO #188022 tells us that when he was a tiny kitten the Zoo Crew’s two large canine members, JADA LYNN and LOKJE, also pitched in to help nurture him & his siblings. Lokje would pick up any kitten she felt needed attention and carry it gently to Mom & Dad. And Jada Lynn welcomed cuddles and even clumsy attempts to nurse from Leo when his fur mom was not available. They’re still the best of friends, as you can see by his profile picture.

When ANGEL KAYCEE #45862 joined her forever family at 6 weeks old, NIKKI the Chow Chow also stepped into the mothering role. This is all the more touching since the rest of Kaycee’s litter had been killed by a dog.

If our retired Queen Lola does not know this next kitty, she probably knows the setting for the story, which comes one again from the Animal Rescue Site. It starts with a human couple out walking in the Botanical Gardens of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was fairly common to see abandoned cats doing their best to live in this park, and one day the couple’s attention was caught by a young female, alone near a cardboard box. For three days they watched her avoid trouble with other cats, and approach passing humans for food and attention. It was apparent that this fairly young kitty had very recently had kittens, but the couple could not find any of them. After much soul searching, the couple gathered her up and took her home, giving her the name KITTIN.

On the other side of this park, around the same time, they found a young kitten without a mother, who they also took home in hopes that Kittin and the baby would be able to help one another out. Within 10 minutes of being together in the safety of the couple’s apartment, Kittin and the new arrival, who they named JUANITA, had adopted one another as mother and daughter.

Their humans report that the pair have been inseparable ever since. When the family travels, they go along, and Kittin even has her own Facebook page!

From abandoned pet to Queen of the House, let’s hear it today for Kittin and her family!

The Animal Rescue site has a lot of amazing rescue stories. In fact, they are offering an E-book of their best 100 rescue stories for a very reasonable price, which goes to help shelter animals. Check it out, and while you’re there, click the purple paw button to help feed shelter animals. And if you don’t already have a favourite, consider dropping a vote for K. Easy’s shelter, the Animal Care Centre of St. John, US Virgin Islands in the Shelter Challenge, too.

Sometimes in traveling around CC, I notice that it almost seems to be raining kittens around our friends’ Moms & Dads! So many kitties here were found by kind humans and bottle raised. A few of these are:

ROCKY #3105, found at 2 days old and grew into 21 pounds of kitty love

K. SPARKY #3436, found in the weeds as a tiny little guy, only 7 days old. At 14, he’s still his Mom’s very special baby boy, and helps show younger siblings and fosters the ropes. The latest of these is a little guy named BANDIT.

LILY ANN #182054, found in her Mom’s yard. After a vet said she wouldn’t live through the night, she spent a month living in her Dad’s shirt pocket and being fed every hour. The vet was wrong!

SIMBA & TIGRESS #218314, the only two survivors from a feral mother

ANGEL KIKI #165201, hand raised with his two siblings after their fur mom died the day after they were born.

WHITEY #211606, also hand raised with three siblings when their fur mom died after giving birth

SIMBA #3027, found with his littermates in a dumpster when they were a week old.

CARMAN #188523, found abandoned in an alley at three weeks old, mewing for her Mom. Instead she found a human Mom.

Our most recent additions are the five kittens that SHELBY #219701’s Grandpa found in a box at the dump! He couldn’t leave the little 3 week old furrballs, so cruelly abandoned, so he brought them home and Shelby’s Grandma started bottle feeding them. She did a good job, because the kittens are now healthy little bundles of energy looking for forever homes. Well, except for one the little cutie now known as MIDNIGHT BOO BOO #233023!

Q. Lola says that not only does she know the setting of yesterday’ s story, she once posted a video of it here on CC. Go to “Cat Videos” along the left hand side of the page, then do a search for “Jardin Botanico”. She also says that there has been a spay & neuter program going on there these past years, and now almost all of the cats there have been spayed or neutered so there will hopefully be no more homeless kittens born there.
