LIVING as if we only had one year left to LIVE Novelist and critic John "Anthony Burgess" Wilson (1917-1993) got frustrated by the literary scene and left England. He took a teaching position in Malaya. Living abroad inspired Burgess' writing. He published three unsuccessful novels. In 1959, he began to suffer from severe headaches and was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. The doctor told him he only had one year to live. He returned home to earn money to provide for his widow. Instead of feeling miserable, he had a new sense of purpose. He wrote: "I had been granted something I had never had before: a whole year to live. I would not be run over by a bus tomorrow, nor knifed on the Brighton racetrack. I would not choke on a bone. If I fell in the wintry sea, I would not drown. I had a whole year, a long time. In that year I had to earn for my prospective widow. ... I would have to turn myself into a professional writer." “What I do I do because I like to do.” Burgess wrote five novels in the year he believed to be his last. He proceeded to live for another 33 more years after the inaccurate assessment of his condition. In 1962, he published "A Clockwork Orange". Stanley Kubrick adapted the book into a highly controversial film. Between 1970 and 1980 Burgess published around 30 books. He was an accomplished musician and linguist. He died from lung cancer. At his death he was a multi-millionaire, leaving a Europe-wide property portfolio of houses and apartments. •*´¨`*•. ¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸ ::: (\_(\ ...*...*. ..*...*.. *: (=' :') :::::::: Chloe •.. Perseverance: the foundation of all actions. L Tzu Sorry to hear about Goldie. Please receive our deepest sympathies and condolences. Mystery writer Mary Higgins Clark's books have sold more than 80 million copies in the U.S., and millions more around the world was born on December 24, 1927. She grew up in the Bronx during the Depression to Irish parents. When her dad and two brothers died, her mom lost the house. She worked as a babysitter, as a hotel switchboard operator, a secretary, a Pan Am flight attendant before marrying at age 22. When her husband died, she had 5 children to support. To make ends meet, she wrote four-minute-long radio scripts. Before her kids woke up, she sat at the typewriter and wrote short stories — her true passion. She sent them off to magazines, and she got back dozens of rejection slips. Encouragement came after her historical novel about George Washington. She followed it with a suspense novel inspired by the time that her three-year-old child had gone missing briefly near a deep lake. In 1974, she sold it to a publisher for a modest $3000. Three months later, she found out the paperback rights to the book had sold for $100,000. Her second suspense novel sold for $1.5 million, and soon she was being paid $12 million per story. Each one of her suspense novels has been a best-seller. She earned a philosophy degree from Fordham University in 1979. •*´¨`*•. ¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸ ::: (\_(\ ...*...*. ..*...*.. *: (=' :') :::::::: Chloe •.. Monopoly of life:a lucky break just when U need it A rags to riches tale: On December 31, 1935, the game Monopoly was patented by Charles Darrow, an unemployed engineer in Germantown, Pennsylvania. He struggled with odd jobs to support his family in the years following the great stock market crash of 1929. This fascinating story of corporate intrigue begins with the 30-year old, The Landlord's Game. It had a lot of the familiar Monopoly features like a "Go to Jail" square and utilities and properties for purchase. With his free time, Darrow modified it, basing his rental properties on his favorite resort town, Atlantic City. Parker Brothers, at first, turned down Charles Darrow, explaining that his game contained "fifty-two fundamental errors" including: the game took too long to play, the rules were too complicated and there was no clear goal for the winner. Parker Brothers later offered Charles Darrow royalties, on each new version of Monopoly sets sold. This generous deal made him a millionaire. In 1970, a few years after Darrow's death, Atlantic City erected a commemorative plaque in his honor. It stands on the Boardwalk, near the corner of Park Place. •*´¨`*•. ¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸ ::: (\_(\ ...*...*. ..*...*.. *: (=' :') :::::::: Chloe •.. It's a wonderful life Philip Van Doren Stern (1900-1984) began a short story, The Greatest Gift", in 1939. He was inspired by a dream, and reminiscent of the 1843 Charles Dickens' Christmas Carol. Stern shared 200 printed copies in 1943 friends as a year-end cards after numerous publisher rejections. Luckily, the pamphlet came to the attention of a RKO movie producer who purchased the rights. Frank Capra's production company saw the movie potential. He paid $10,000 for the rights in 1945. Stern's story was adapted into the most loved and memorable American family film, "It's a Wonderful Life" in 1946. Director Capra's inventiveness, humor and affection for human beings keep it glowing with life and excitement. On Xmas eve, George Bailey's guardian angel shows him all the lives he touched and how different life in his community would be had he never been born. Although George repeatedly sacrifices his dream to travel the world, he realizes "No man is a failure who has friends." My dear friends at CatChannel, each one of you is precious, charming and kind. We make every attempt to make all members feel welcomed. You have the generous spirit of George Bailey in your hearts. You make our community a wonderful place. Thank you for being our friends. •*´¨`*•. ¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸ ::: (\_(\ ...*...*. ..*...*.. *: (=' :') :::::::: Chloe •.. The Nutcracker Ballet On December 17, 1892, The Nutcracker ballet premiered in St. Petersburg, Russia. Critics and audience thought it a failure; it was not an instant success. The adaptation by Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870) was based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffman (1776-1822). The score was composed by Peter Tchaikovsky, commissioned by mastermind choreographer Marius Petipa. Tchaikovsky died less than a year later. The ballet was first performed in the United States in 1944. The Nutcracker has become a classic — many people consider it the most popular ballet in the world. .......................*****..................... Mom simply loved seeing her niece's ballet performances for all those special ten Decembers, meow-arvelous and magical memories to remember. Our adorable Sarah played different characters, beginning as a mouse, followed by a flower, a plum fairy and other dancers with enormous grace. How fast time goes, like a blink of an eye. •*´¨`*•. ¸¸.•*´¨`*•.¸¸ ::: (\_(\ ...*...*. ..*...*.. *: (=' :') :::::::: Chloe •.. Choupette - Lagerfeld's cat Wow, what a bird story. Mom has a parakeet in a cage. She always wonders what would happen if he ever escaped. In an interview with Women's Wear Daily, the German-born Lagerfeld gushed about his 9-month-old kitten Choupette, a Siamese cat referred to as "a famous beauty" and "a kept woman." He baby-sat the kitten during Christmas for model Baptiste Giaconi but then refused to give her back. "I thought she was too cute." Now the pampered feline lives the high life. Choupette dines with Lagerfeld for lunch and dinner. "She doesn't want to eat on the floor." She knows her way around an iPad. And she has two "personal maids" who cater to her every whim "both night and day," he said. "She is beyond spoiled." The two kitten minders "keep a diary. When I am not there, the maids take down, in little books, everything she did, from what she ate, to how she behaved, if she was tired, and if she wasn’t sleeping." In the nine months, we already have almost 600 pages. I think it could be funny to make a little book of Choupette’s diary." See the video and sing along to these lyrics The lead video of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is riveting. The song, released in 1970, remains current. "Immigrant Song" by Led Zeppelin Ah, ah, We come from the land of the ice and snow, From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow. The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands, To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming! On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore. Ah, ah, We come from the land of the ice and snow, From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow. How soft your fields so green, can whisper tales of gore, Of how we calmed the tides of war. We are your overlords. On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore. So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins, For peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing.
