John Ronald Reuel Tolkien has gained popularity as of the result of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movies and classic books. Born 1/3/1892, it would have been his 121st B-day. He died on 9/2/73.
Tolkien was much inspired by early Germanic, especially Old English, literature, poetry, and mythology, which were his chosen and much-loved areas of expertise.
In The Lord of the Rings, Aragorn uses the cats as a byword for navigation in the dark: Gandalf is surer of finding the way home in a blind night than the cats of Queen Berúthiel. According to Unfinished Tales, Queen Berúthiel had ten cats. The cats were her slaves whom she used as spies.

1/3/13 Day Three!
Welcome to CC! You are a real cutie!
Good Morning all. Another day for us on the Catpaign trail and our topic today is Routine and its importance to us kitties. I, Barney try to run my household with an iron paw. I'm sure most of you do. We have one issue to deal with this year that I have not experienced before. Mom is what she call "Retired." You would think it means she has time to cater to our every whim, but alas, while she still gets up at 5am, she takes more time with the dogs, makes coffee at home, finally gets our breakfast in the bowels and then puts the news on TV. We want to thank the CMR page, because they always have the Mews of the day up, when we are just getting on CC!
Anyway, the other upset to our routine is having not one, but two large dogs, Ginger, age 11yrs, and Lucky, about 9 yrs. We cats might describe them as lazy, but not wanting to be politically incorrect, mom says they are Seniors and if they wake her at 3am, they probably need to! We have more than enough litter boxes and they could easily learn to stick their hinny in one. --- Well, would we really want them too?
