Well, that’ll show my brother!
At the end of December when he got his last COTD badge he was all “this is the last badge for our family on CC (sniff)”. Shows how much HE knows! Why, when I heard that I just HAD to use my special connections to make sure CC stayed open long enough for me to get my first Angel badge. I can be obstinate that way, mol.

I sure wish it was that easy! We second, third and fourth Angel Zaboo’s motion to use the rest of our time on CC to be positive, visit our special friends and remember all the good times we’ve shared together. Thanks for bringing me a COTD vote, and for being there to share so many good times with.

Hello my favorite neices!
I am so sorry that I am behind on my blogs but mom has been super busy and today just plain lazy so here I am.

NASCAR in Bristol...

In 1961 three Bristol businessmen got together and bought some acreage that was used for dairy cattle to graze. Larry Carrier, Carl Moore and R.G Pope were the men with a big dream of building a track that would be used by NASCAR. Their dream would be become known as the fastest half mile track in NASCAR.

On July 27, 1961 the first practice was held on the track and Tiny Lund has the distinction of being the first driver to practice on the new track, followed by David Pearson. The first race, The Volunteer 500, was held on July 30, 1961 and was won by a driver named Jack Smith. He didn't drive all 500 laps because of blistering of his feet! Johnny Allen finished the race for him. Cars of today are much better insulated than those in 1961.

Brenda Lee, who was 17 at the time, sang the National Anthem.

The track was built for $600,000 and sold for $26,000,000 in 1996 when Larry Carrier sold it to Bruton Smith. The track was sold one or two times before Larry Carrier became the sole owner before selling to Bruton Smith.

Mom has been to races at the track and remember sitting in the pits (when the infield was just that the infield) and watching Fireball Roberts, Richard Petty and David Pearson race when she was a kid.

Fast forward and the track now has suites and seats over a 100,000 people. Bristol's population doubles during race weekends and people have to book hotels all the way into North Carolina.

Mom grew up two miles from the track and is a huge NASCAR fan. She's seen and met the late Davey Allison, Tony Stewart and more. Bristol has Race Night on the Thursday before the race and fans have the opportunity to meet the drivers, hear live bands and get food freebies. It spells for a fun night and mom goes when she has someone to go with.

So this is Bristol Motor Speedway, once known as the Bristol International Speedway.

Hope that you all enjoyed your NASCAR visit. I love race weekends!

Love and purrs

Hello my favorite neices!
am going to tell you a little bit about my home town. If I can just get mom past the heartache and sadness for a bit.

My hometown Bristol...

Bristol exists today because of the railroad. It would be a tiny town if not for the fact that it was once a busy railroad hub for Southern and Norfolk and Western. The trains took young away to war and brought them home. Sometimes to be buried with honors. Passengers were taken to cities all over. When the steam engines bowed to the diesel, the round house and repair shops closed and were eventually torn down.
We had Buntings Drugstore that was reknown for it's hot dogs! Mom says they were the absolute best as far as hot dogs go. The drugstore was over a 100 years and Mom can still hear in her memory the creaky wooden floors and see the glass tables that had displays between the two layers. The drugstore is gone but alive in the memories of adults and kids that were privledged to eat those heavenly hot dogs.
Bristol has the state line running down the middle of the main road that is known as State Street. When a band marches down State Street one person is always divided as half in Tennessee and their other half in Virginia! Mom was divided a couple of times. The band members always wanted the middle position of the row. Silly huh?
Bristol is legally recognized as the birth place of my favorite music, COUNTRY! Yep! we are the birthplace of country music. The late Jimmy Rogers made a couple of recordings here and the Carter family recorded here too. They still have shows every summer at the Carter Fold is close to here. The town just opened the Country Music Museum about a month ago.
Our claim to fame though, is the Bristol Motor Speedway. Home for two NASCAR races a year, March and August. (Yes, mom has been to some races) Right now it is home to the Festival of Lights to raise money for Children's Charities. Other races are held sometimes between the NASCAR dates.
I could go on but it would take a lot more room.

Love and loud purrs
Queen Snuggles

Hello my favorite neices!
thought that I would take you to visit a state park tonight that mom (a railroad buff) loves visiting and taking pictures there. It is known as the Natural Tunnel and is located in Duffield, VA.

The Natural Tunnel

The Natural Tunnel is called the Eighth Wonder of the World by William Jennings Brian, has been attracting sightseers for over a hundred plus years!

Daniel Boone was probably the first white man to see the tunnel in that it laid along the original route that he took westward.

The Natural Tunnel was first surveyed in 1852 as a proposed route for the VA & KY railroad but the Civil War put those plans on the back burner and they were all but forgotten. During the Civil War, they mined saltpeter out of the tunnel and nearby and the holes where the saltpeter was dug are still visible in the tunnel today. Mom has seen them! In 1890, the South Atlantic & Ohio opened the line from Bristol (my hometown)to Big Stone Gap(yes there is a town with that name) and later to Appalachia, VA. The route was taken over by another Southern Railroad and when it merged with Norfolk & Western and became Norfolk Southern in 1982. They let CSX railroad have track rights to haul their coal. Both railroads just use this route to haul coal now.

When you visit the park and ride the chairlift down, you get lucky and see a CSX or a Norfolk Southern train hauling coal and feel the energy and hear the growl of the mighty locomotives pulling the many tons of coal or taking an empty to a mine or mines. It is amazing that this tunnel nature made many many thousands of years ago is a perfect fit for today's mighty diesel locomotives.

Love and purrs Queen Snuggles

I have pictures on my page of the tunnel.

Hello my favorite neices!
thought that I would begin with telling you about some interesting things about my hometown and the surrounding area during my reign. I am proud of my hometown.

The South Holston (pictures of it are on my page)

The South Holston Dam is unmatched in natural beauty. (That is one reason mom loves to go to the lake and take pictures and cook out) Water skiing, fishing, boating, hiking are just a few things enjoyed by many using the lake.

The lake was named for the river that bares the name of Steven Holston, an early settler of the Tennessee/Virginia area.

Construction of the dam started on February 16, 1942 and was completed on November 20, 1952. The dam was built for purposes of electrical power, flood control, recreation and other related benefits. There were 49 injuries incurred during the building of the dam and 3 deaths. There were 342 families relocated and 559 graves that had to also be relocated.

The dam is 285 feet tall, 1600 feet long. The lake itself, covers 10,053 acres with a shoreline of 160 miles.

Mom used to swim in the lake when her late uncle had a house boat. He would always test the depth of the water to insure that no foot would find a tree or the ruins of a big farm house. She would fish but always caught blue gills while the cousins caught bass. It is rumored that there are monster catfish in the lake near the intakes where they live in old cars.

There is or was also an old abandoned brick farmhouse, near the lake, that is divided by the state line running through it! The owners finally got tired of paying taxes to two states and sold the farm and moved. Mom believes the old house is gone now.

The Weir dam (just below the main dam) was built for oxygenating the river when water is released from the dam, to promote trout growth in the river.

Hope that you enjoyed learning about the dam. I only live thirty minutes from it and 10 minutes from the river!

Love and purrs Queen Snuggles

Hello my favorite neices!
This is my final campaign blog. I hope that you enjoy it. Though sad, it is another bittersweet love story.

Day 29

The Jennie Wade Story

Mary Virginia Wade was a 20 year old resident of Gettysburg, Pa, engaged to Corp. Johnston H. Skelly of the 87th Pennsylvania She was a seamtress with her mother working from their home. To help make ends meet they also took care of a six year old boarder, Isaac. For safety, Jeannie and the family and Isaac, moved to her sister's house which stood less than 50 yards from Cementary Hill. There was no heavy fighting in the area but a Union Picket line did run behind the little brick house. There was intermittent skirmishing between it and the Confederates. Protected by thick brick walls the lived for three days in the midst of the greatest battle in this hemisphere. Jennie spent July 1 and 2 giving the soldiers bread and filling their canteens with fresh water. On July 2 she noticed that the bread supply was low and more bread would be needed for the next day. She and her mother left the yeast to rise until the morning. About 7am on July 3, Confederates sharp shooters began firing at the North windows of the house The two women began baking biscuits and around 8:30am Jennie stood in the kitchen, a Confederate musket ball smashed through the door, pierced a hole into the kitchen striking Jennie in the back beneath her left shoulder blade, ebedding itself into her corset, killing her instantly. Union soldiers carried her to the basement after hearing the cries of her mother and sister. She was buried in Evergreen Cementary in a coffin some Confederates soldiers had mad for an officer. The next day, her mother baked 15 loaves of bread from the dough Jeannie kneaded.
Jennie Wade was the only civilian casuality of Gettysburg. Unknown to Jennie, her fiancé, Corp. Skelly had been wounded and taken prisoner on May 13. He was taken to Richmond and died of his wounds on July 12, 1863. News of his death came several days after Confederates had withdrawn from Gettysburg.

I sincerely want to thank you for all of your support and friendship. I look forward to being your queen through December and have some things planned already!

Hello my favorite neices!
I am sorry that I don't have a Civil War blog for today as it seemed in appropriate on a day of giving thanks.

As I sit and look at this empty computer screen with no civil war blog prepared because of the Thanksgiving holiday. I think about all the soldiers in Afghanistan without their families and I give thanks for each and everyone of them for making the sacrifice and pray they all come home. Because of them, I can celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and the fourth of July.

I think about all the poor cats and kittens, dogs and puppies with out a human to love them and give them care and warmth they so desire. The love and food we receive every day is taken for granted by those of us who have always had loving humans who see that we have shelter, love and warmth. I am thankful for all that I have this Day.

I think of humans without places to call home. No place to go for food and wonder if any one loves them or care if they are cold and living on the streets.

I am saddened thinking about this on a day of Thanksgiving. But, I am sure, all my brothers and sisters, are as thankful as I for our humans who love us, feed us and spoil us.

I will do my final civil war blog tomorrow and the coronation will be on Saturday the 30th at 7pm EST.

I thank you for your votes, friendship and support.

Hello my favorite neices!
Gosh! two more days until the coronation! A dream of mine is coming true. But I still wonder where all that time went so quickly this month!

Day 27

Grierson's Raid (condensed)

On April 17, 1863, Colonel B.H. Grierson led three cavalry regiments from La Grange, TN, on a history making march through Mississippi to Union lines in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
On April 21, Grierson detached the 2nd Iowa Cavalry under Colonel Hatch , to destroy the railroad bridge between Columbus and Macon and then to return to La Grange Hatch had a sharp fight with Confederate troops, defeating them without the lost of a single man. Hatch's success was due to the fact his regiment was armed with Colt's revolving rifles. Hatch retreated along the railroad destroying it at Okolona and Tupelo. He arrived back at La Grange with the lost of 10 men. The main object was to decoy Confederates to the East giving Grierson ample time to get under way.
Mean while, Grierson continued his raid with less than 1000 horsemen, breaking the Southern Mississippi and New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern reailroad. Near Newton, they burned several bridges, destroyed locomotives, with cars loaded with commissary stores, guns and ammo. At Hazelhurst, cars and ammo and at Brookhaven the railroad depot and cars.
Having cavalry available to Grierson, Confederates were kept in a state of excitement alarm. Rumors exaggerated Grierson's numbers and where he could be. Several brigades of Confederate artillery were dispatched but Grierson avoided them all.
In 16 days, Grierson marched 600 miles-nearly 38 miles a day, destroying railroads, telegraph, and other property. Most important, he distracted the Confederates attention from Grant's operations against Vicksburg. Grierson lost 36 men while collecting a thousand horses and mules. The Grierson raid was probably the most successful operation of its kind during the civil war.

I want to thank everyone for all of your support, votes and friendship.

Hello my favorite neices!
Tonight I am going to do a mini intro of General Benjamin Grierson. What an unlikely man to be an officer of cavalry and to lead the raid he did.

Day 26

Colonel Benjamin H. Grierson must have been the Union Army's most improbable cavalry leader. He had hated horses since the age of eight, when he was kicked by a pony and badly hurt. he had objected vigorously when he was assigned to the 6th Illinois Cavalry in 1861. He had protested to None other than General Halleck himself, who brushed him off with the comment that he looked "active and wiry enough" to become a cavalryman.

What is more, Grierson, was something of a novice in military matters; in April 1863 he had only 18 months of service behind him. He was really a musician-a composer, arranger, pianist, flutist, drummer and guitarist who had been making an uncertain living as a music teacher when the war started. On patrols he entertained himself and those of his men within earshot by strumming away on a jews-harp as they rode along.

Grierson was born on July 8, 1826 and was the youngest of 5 children. He married in 1854 and had 7 children and only 4 survived to adulthood. He died on August 31, 1911, at age 85.

Tomorrow we will do the raid that Grierson is famous for. Mom enjoys reading about this raid and says it was really hard on the horses and riders but was a success.

Thank you for the continued support, votes and most importantly friendship.

Hello my favorite neices!
know that I promised to begin with General Grierson today but mom can't get the printer to work and HP won't cooperate with the ePrint. Mom is about to throw a hissy! So how about a Civil War ghost story of a local Inn. Mom will toss Wikipedia out of the window and look through her books for her second favorite story of the war.

Day 25

The Martha Washington Inn in nearby Abingdon, VA, was built in 1830 by General Francis Preston. It was turned into a girl's school but in 1860 it became a hospital for the grieviously wounded soldiers. (Abingdon was the sight of some war action)

In 1863, John Stoves was brought to the hospital, half full of musket balls. A beautiful young woman named Beth, took care of the soldier. Beth changed his bandages and comforted him. He learned she could play the violin and he asked her to play for him. Though in severe pain, the music seemed to put him at ease and he would fall asleep. It is said that Beth fell in love with him.
One day, as he was lying near death, she played the violin for him and as she did he closed his eyes for the final time. She grabbed his hand and cried. A few weeks later she died. Some say it was from complications of typhoid fever and others say it was from a broken heart.
Her ghost is supposedly sighted often and guests will tell the clerks that they heard violin music during the night coming from room 403. It is also said that the young officer's ghostly steed trots around the water fountain looking for his master on clear full moon nights. I wonder....

We were going to end with this ghost story but our printer would NOT print info about Grierson so mom will work on that tomorrow.

Thank you for your votes, support and friendship.

Hello my favorite neices!
I can't believe that there are five more days of catpaigning after today. Where has the time gone? Thank you to each and everyone of you for the votes, support and best of all friendship.

Day 24

I would like to introduce you to General George H. Thomas's horse "Billy"

Know as the "Rock of Chickamauga" General George H. Thomas possessed two intelligent war horses, both powerful and large enough to carry the General's two hundred pounds. Both horses were bays with Billy being the darker of the two. Both horses stood about 16 hands and very stout. (Billy was named for General Thomas's friend, General William T. Sherman) Billy was like his owner, sedate in all his movements and wasn't easily disturbed by battle.

Billy bore Thomas through the campaigns in middle Tennessee and Northern Georgia. He was on the fields of Chickamauga and Chattanooga and marched to Atlanta. From Atlanta he moved to Nashville, where his master engineered the crushing defeat to the Confederate arms in the winter of 1864, the last battle in which Billy and Thomas participated.

I think it is appropriate to end the war horses with the oldest war horse.

Old Jim, according to records was the last surviving civil war horse. He lived until at least 1894. His rider, Lt. McMahon was killed in action but Old Jim went back to Aiken, SC. He entertained crowds at parades of Civil War veterans until his death.

I will do a quick look at General Benjamin Grierson tomorrow.

Hello my favorite neices!
I have one more day of horse stories and then we will do a short bio on General Benjamin Grierson before I do his raid into the deep South distracting the Southern forces from General Grant's moves in Vicksburg. I will combine three short stories of the remaining horses we can find info on.

Day 23

General JEB Stuart's horse...

Highfly was the battle horse that carried General JEB Stuart through many campaigns and had become his favored companion. The horse's intelligence and faithfulness had Stuart through many dangers. In the summer of 1862, at Verdiersville, on the plank road between Fredricksburg and Orange VA,, Sturart was stretched out on a bench on the tavern's porch awaiting for General Fitzhugh Lee (General R.E. Lee's nephew) to confer on the next movement of cavalry. Highfly was unbridled and grazing in the yard near the road. The clatter of horses woke the Confederate General who walked to the roadway, leaving behind his hat, in which was a black ostrich feather plume, the pride of Stuart's heart. Suddenly horsemen rode around the bend of the road and Stuart was within gunshot of Union Cavalry. Being nonplussed he had ezpected to see Lee. He mounted his faithful, fast bay horse, leaving the chagrined Union Cavalry behind but the foe carried away the treasured hat with the black ostrich plum. General Stuart would later in the war, be killed in the battle of Yellow Tavern.

I want to thank each and everyone of you for the continued support of my campaign and your friendship means the world to me.

Hello my favorite neices!
I want to introduce you to Lexington and Sam, two of General Sherman's horses.

I also want to thank you for the votes, friendship and support of my campaign.

Day 2
General Sherman's best horse was killed at the battle of Shilo, leading the right wing of the Union forces against General A.S. Johnson's Confederate forces. Two other horses were killed while being held by an orderly. Of the many horses that carried Sherman through the years of the war, two had a particular place in the General's affections, Lexington and Sam. Lexington was a Kentucky thoroughbred (He was also the sire of General Grant's Cincinnati) and his fine action attracted the admiration of all who saw him. When Union troops finally entered and occupied Atlanta, in 1864, Sherman was astride Lexington for the grand review of the troops in Washington. He died in 1875 at a Kentucky horse farm at the age of 25 and he is buried there.

Sam was a large half thoroughbred bay in color, and was 16 1/2 hands tall. He had speed, strength and endurance. Sam made one to the longest and most difficult marches ever recorded in history, from Vicksburg to Washington, through the cities of Atlanta, Savannah, Colombia, and Richmond. With his rapid gait, he could march 5 miles and hour at a walk. Under fire he was calm and steady as his brave master. He was wounded several times, wile mounted, the fault was usually due to Sherman's disregard of the anxiety to seek cover. In 1865, Sherman retired Sam to a well earned rest on an Illinois farm were her received every mark of affection. The brave war horse died of extreme old age in 1884.

Mom tried to find more info about Lexington and couldn't except about his speed. Tomorrow I will see if I can find another horse story for you and then on Sunday we will do Grierson's Raid. John Wayne's Horse Soldiers is very loosely based on this ride.

Day 21

General McClellan's horses...

While General McClellan was in charge of the Union Army in 1862, he had a number of war horses. His favorite horse was one named "Daniel Webster". He was called "that devil Dan" by the staff officers who had difficulty in keeping pace with Dan. During the battle of Antietam, the great horse carried the General safely through the day.

Daniel Webster was a dark bay horse, about 17 hands high, a purebred with good action and never showed any signs of fatigue no matter how hard the test was. He was extremely intelligent with more than ordinary horse sense. He had a fast walk which was important for a commander's horse but disagreeable for the staff officer's horses whose horses had to be kept at a slow trot to keep up with Dan! When McClellan retired to private life, Dan became the family horse at Orange, NJ where he died at age 23. McClellan said "No soldier ever had a better horse than I had in Daniel Webster."

McClellan also had another horse named "Burns", a fiery black, named after an army friend who had given him the horse. His only failing was at dinner time he would bolt for his oats regardless. Running at dinner time became such an obsession with Burns, that McClellan was always careful not to be mounted on him at that hour of day!

Tomorrow I will talk about Gen. W.T. Sherman's horses. Hope that you enjoyed meeting Dan and Burns.
