… was voted Australia’s most livable city. It’s also the gateway to the unique and iconic Kangaroo Island, today’s destination.
Minutes from the mainland, Kangaroo Island is a sanctuary for wildlife and natural, rugged beauty. This place is like a zoo without fences, with rare bird life, wallabies, and plenty of kangaroos and koalas. We make landfall at dusk since wildlife is most active at this time. We are thrilled to find that Penguins can be seen on shore after dark; many of them have graced us with their presence. The youngsters are especially excited to see penguins so close. They say they feel like they are IN the zoo.
After a night spent in tents, we discover koalas in the trees. Like other marsupials, a koala mother carries her baby in a pouch until it is large enough to ride on her back or belly. What adorable things they are.
A short ride in a Jeep has brought us to yet another fun spot. We are going to try Sand-boarding at Little Sahara. All of the guys and some of us girls have decided to try this one. The sand dunes are quite high and the ride down on a sand-board is exhilarating. Just don’t wipe out; that sand is not a comfortable landing zone at speed. It will take some time to comb the sand from our fur but, oh, it was so worth it.
On the way back, our Jeep passes a number of kangaroos and wallabies. We don’t stop though, as they can be a bit aggressive. This is spring in the Southern Hemisphere, and there are definitely joeys (baby kangaroos) in their mothers’ pouches.
We finish this day diving in the clear blue waters around Kangaroo Island where we see seals and many other marine creatures including the famous Leafy Sea Dragon, 8 – 10 inch creatures which look like seahorses covered in fall leaves.
Finally, we make a stop at Clifford's Honey Farm where we taste an interesting sparkling honey drink. While here we see a hive and a DVD showing how honey is harvested. In the shop area are lots of honey products and souvenirs. For 20c you can have a piece of cat safe chocolate covered honeycomb, which Galaxy and Verona try. Soon we are all enjoying the sweet repast.
