Heaven Is...

A man was riding his horse down a road, cat in his arms & his dog by their side. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, & that his horse, cat & dog had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them. After a while, they came to a high, white stonewall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, was a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. Standing before it, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch, made from mother of pearl, & the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He nudged the horse toward the gate, & as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk. Once close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"

"This is heaven, sir," the man answered.
"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.
"Of course, sir. Come right in, & I'll have some ice water brought right up."

The man gestured, & the gate began to open. "Can my furiends," gesturing downward towards his horse, cat & dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked. "I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept animals."

The man thought a moment & then turned his horse & dog back toward the road, cat in his arms & continued the way he had been going. At the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree & reading a book. "Excuse me!" he called to the reader. "Do you have any water?"

"Sure, there's a pump over there" The man pointed to a place that couldn't be seen from outside the gate. "Come on in."
"How about my furiends here?" the traveler asked.
"There should be a bowl & a bucket by the pump."

They went through the gate, & sure enough, there was an old hand pump with a bowl & a bucket beside it. The traveler filled the bowl & took a long drink himself, then gave some to his cat & dog while he filled the bucket for his horse. When they all were satisfied, he led his furiends back toward the man who was standing by the tree waiting for them.
"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.
"This is heaven," was the answer.
"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said that was heaven, too."
"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street & pearly gates? Nope. That's hell."
"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"

"No. I can see how you might think so, but we're just happy that they screen out the folks who’d leave their best furiends behind."

A Word With Whiskers – May 17

I’ll never be sure if it was wisdom or folly that struck that day, but I would think a little of both. We had been happily living with one cat for a couple of years, a fairly large black-&-white English Shorthair named Smedley. It was time for his annual exam & shots, so off we went to our local veterinarian’s office, puss in hand, or actually wrapped like up like an Egyptian mummy to save us from his dreaded claws.

“Ah!” Doc Pete said, with a twinkle in his eyes. “I’m glad you dropped in. I have a kitten out back that needs a home & I thought of you!”

Before I could stop him, his assistant brought out the tiniest marmalade tabby, weighing just over a pound, with a cast on his left front leg. He put him in my arms, looked up at me & said, “So what do you think?”

They say a sucker is born every minute & that was my minute. We took one look at the poor little thing & then at each other & we were done for. We found out that someone had broken his leg & tried to drown him in the nearest canal. A Good Samaritan had rescued him & brought him to the vet’s office.

“How will they get along?” I asked. “How do we go about introducing them to each other?”
“Oh, that’s no problem,” he said. “You just put him in a carrier, take him home, leave the carrier open & let Smedley think he is rescuing the kitten.”

Well, it sounded good. As per instruction, once we got home, we left the kitten in the carrier in the middle of the room. Then we sat back to watch. Smedley circled the box & growled deeper than I had ever heard him before. The kitten mewed plaintively while sticking a paw out of the holes in the side of the carrier. After about an hour, we decided to open the top of the carrier a little wider. Smedley walked up to the top, looked inside & was rewarded by a lightning strike from a small orange paw.

That was the last we saw of him that evening. I was convinced that the next morning would find us back at the vet’s office returning the little tyke. However, the next morning, we were in for a surprise. As I got up to put on the coffee, I saw the two of them curled up together on the sofa as if they were one cat with two smiling faces. From then on, Smedley watched over the little one as if he had given birth to him, and they went everywhere together.

Doc Pete was right!

Cats are intuitive and can teach us to be gentle & patient.

The Taste Sense Of Cats - (from PetSpeak)

Cats are blessed with a keen sense of smell. So while humans can smell broiled lobster, a cat can smell something like “broiled Maine lobster shipped in brine.” Despite their incredible sensitivity to smell, cats aren’t too concerned about taste. Of all their senses, taste is probably the least important to cats. Humans seek culinary perfection, but cats are mainly interested in whether the stuff they’re about to eat is nutritious or dangerous.

Cats tend to be more picky than dogs. One reason for this is that they’re carnivores, and spoiled meat is best left behind for scavengers. Another reason is that they’re, well, cats, and cats are generally more particular about life than dogs. Because they care more about what they put into their mouths, it’s tougher to slip them day-old food or extras like medicine.

Cats do seem to have one blind spot when it comes to taste: They have a very limited ability to identify sweets. While most animals prefer food with sucrose in it, cats don’t seem to notice it. In fact, researchers found that cats could not tell the difference between sugar water and plain water, even when the sugar level was so high that it was potentially dangerous.

Although flavor isn’t the most important thing to cats, food certainly is. It gives them a sense of comfort and well-being even as it satisfies their appetites. And it can be a powerful tool for communication as well. If you give a pet food he really likes, you’ll get his attention in a hurry.

Cats are creatures of habit, which means they’re most comfortable when they’re in familiar surroundings, with familiar people and familiar tastes. Just because people want to try different foods all the time doesn’t mean cats do too.

It’s fine to change foods periodically. Cats may get bored with the same food after a few months and will crave a new flavor. Let them have it. But make the change slowly by mixing some of the new food in with the old food for a few days. This will prevent diarrhea or other digestive problems that may occur when pets suddenly start eating something new.

THE ABILITY TO TASTE: The reason dogs and cats snack out of the trash can with the same gusto that they have for cleaning out their food bowls is that the food we throw out often has appealing flavor & aromas. There’s a significant difference in the number of tastebuds between pets & people. Here’s the comparison:

CAT FUNNIES :) - Volume 1

A Cat Heaven -

One day a cat dies of natural causes and goes to Heaven. There he meets the Lord himself. The Lord says to the cat, "You lived a good life and if there is any way I can make your stay in Heaven more comfortable, please let Me know."

The cat thinks for a moment and says, "Lord, all my life I have lived with a poor family and had to sleep on a hard wooden floor." The Lord stops the cat and says, "Say no more," and a wonderful fluffy pillow appears.

A few days later six mice are killed in a tragic farming accident and go to Heaven. Again the Lord is there to greet them with the same offer. The mice answer, "All of our lives we have been chased. We have had to run from cats, dogs, and even women with brooms. Running, running, running; we're tired of running. Do you think we could have roller skates so we don't have to run anymore?" The Lord says, "Say no more," and fits each mouse with beautiful new roller skates.

About a week later the Lord stops by to see the cat and finds him in a deep sleep on the pillow. The Lord gently wakes the cat and asks him, "How are things since you arrived?"

The cat stretches and yawns and replies, "It is wonderful here. Better than I could have ever expected. And those Meals on Wheels you've been sending by are theeeeeeee best!!!"

The Cat Scan –

A man runs into the vet's office carrying his dog, screaming for help. The vet rushes him back to an examination room and has him put his dog down on the examination table. The vet examines the still, limp body and after a few moments, tells the man that his dog, regrettably, is dead. The man, clearly agitated and not willing to accept this, demands a second opinion.

The vet goes into the back room and comes out with a cat and puts the cat down next to the dog's body. The cat sniffs the body, walks from head to tail, poking and sniffing the dog's body and finally looks at the vet and meows.

The vet looks at the man and says, "I'm sorry, but the cat thinks that your dog is dead, too."

The man, finally resigned to the diagnosis, thanks the vet and asks how much he owes. The vet answers, "$350."

"$350 to tell me my dog is dead?!" exclaims the man.

"Well," the vet replies, "I would only have charged you $50 for my initial diagnosis. The additional $300 was for the cat scan."

Ugly the Cat – author unknown

Everyone in the apartment complex I lived in knew who Ugly was. Ugly was the resident tomcat. Ugly loved three things in this world: fighting, eating garbage, and shall we say, love.

The combination of these things combined with a life spent outside had their effect on Ugly. He had only one eye, he was missing an ear and his left foot appeared to have been badly broken at one time, healing at an irregular angle. His tail was gone, leaving a small stub & he was covered with scabs. Humans reacted when they saw him with, “That’s one UGLY cat!”

All the children were warned not to touch him, the adults threw rocks at him, hosed him down when he tried to come in their homes, or shut his paws in the door when he would not leave. Ugly always had the same reaction. If you turned the hose on him, he would stand there, getting soaked until you gave up and quit. If you threw things at him, he would curl his lanky body around feet in forgiveness. If you ever picked him up he would immediately begin suckling on your shirt, earrings, whatever he could find.

One day Ugly shared his love with the neighbor’s huskies. They did not respond kindly, and Ugly was badly mauled. From my home I could hear his screams, and I tried to rush to his aid. By the time I got to where he was laying, it was apparent Ugly's sad life was almost at an end.

As I picked him up to carry him home, I could hear him wheezing and gasping. I must be hurting him terribly I thought. Then I felt a familiar tugging, sucking sensation on my ear- Ugly, in so much pain & suffering was trying to suckle my ear. I pulled him closer to me and he bumped the palm of my hand with his head. Then he turned his one golden eye towards me, and I could hear the distinct sound of purring. Even in the greatest pain, that ugly battled-scarred cat was asking only for a little affection, perhaps some compassion.

At that moment I thought Ugly was the most beautiful, loving creature I had ever seen. Ugly just looked up at me, completely trusting in me to relieve his pain.

Ugly died, nestled in my arms. I sat and held him for a long time afterwards, thinking about how one scarred, deformed little stray, could so alter my opinion about what it means to have true pureness of spirit, to love so totally and truly.

Many people want to be richer, more successful, well liked, beautiful; but for me, I will always try to be Ugly.

ITALIAN CAT BRINGS GIFTS TO HIS LATE MASTER'S TOMB –

ROME - The story of a cat who visits his master's tomb and brings him little presents on an almost daily basis a year after the man's death has moved the inhabitants of a village in central Italy.

"He brings little twigs, leaves, toothpicks, plastic cups. A bit of everything really," Renzo Iozzelli's widow Ada told AFP from Montagnana, a mountain village near Florence.

"Sometimes he comes with me and sometimes he goes on his own. The whole town knows about him now!"

Toldo the cat -- a grey-and-white three-year-old tomcat -- followed Iozzelli's funeral procession last year and has continued going to the cemetery ever since, a habit usually ascribed to dogs.

"He loved my husband. It was something else! Now it's just me, my daughter and my son-in-law and he's very affectionate with us too," she said.

Ada said the journey to and from the cemetery each day had tired Toldo out in the cold winter weather.

"He's not going out so much these days. He's caught a bit of bronchitis so he's sleeping next to me."

BRAZIL INMATES TRAIN CAT FOR PRISON BREAK –

BRASILIA - A cat trained by prisoners to deliver cell phones and tools to dig tunnels was caught at a jail in northeastern Brazil after sneaking in with forbidden items strapped to its body.

"An agent saw the cat and went to look at it closely because something about it seemed wrong," Marcelo Avelino, the head of the prison guards' union, told the O Globo newspaper.

The agent found a bag tied to the animal's body filled with saw blades and drill parts for concrete drilling and digging tunnels, along with a cell phone complete with battery and charger, Avelino added.

The cat had often been seen coming in and out of the Alagoas jail.

Prison officer Luiz de Oliveira Souza told the G1 news website that prisoners had raised the cat and that relatives would often take it home after a prison visit.

"We were very surprised by this new tactic of prisoners, who trained the animal so that it returned to the prison and even managed to carry materials,” the agent added.

Feline Wisdom: A Mother’s Day Letter From My Cats - by Angie Bailey

Dear Meow-my,

Today is Mother’s Day, and because we love and care about you, we have a few points we’d like you to consider:

1. You’re perfect just the way you are. Sometimes we see you worry about silly things and we think you should worry less and nap more. It works for us. And we’ll even nap with you – what a deal!

2. We love it when you let us sleep in your chair. Even when you need to sit there, you never move us – you just balance your butt on the very edge of the chair so you don’t disturb us. You are kind…and well-trained.

3. We know you want to develop a consistent yoga routine and we think that’s a great idea. Stretching feels fantastic and we just want you to know we’re here to help you. You know how we are – the minute you sit on the floor, we climb all over you. Sometimes this annoys you, but we are only trying to help you master the poses. You’re welcome.

4. We also think you should read more books. We notice you look more relaxed when you read, and we like that. Additionally, you reading a book means we’re charged with rubbing our faces all over it and lying on top of it, forcing you to eventually stop reading and pay lots and lots of attention to us. So please read, relax, but focus most of your energy on us.

5. We have a relaxation tip for you: Have you tried napping on a pile of warm laundry? It’s just the best! Try a load of towels – you’ll never go back.

6. Don’t feel guilty about eating a treat now and again. In fact, get really excited about it! You see us, right? Do you notice how we race around the kitchen and cheer when you show us the treat jar? You need to do some racing and cheering over cupcakes. We’ll grab the camera.

7. We love it when you play with us! We think sometimes you should close that computer-thingy and play more often – and not just with us! Take a walk, go swimming or meet friends for tea. And sometimes, we want to be your only laptop.

Hopefully you will find our suggestions helpful. We kitties are smart and know how to live happy and balanced lives and we want that for you, too! Thank you for everything you do for us. We don’t even mind a camera in our faces now and again – we know that makes you happy. Not to create more work for you, but we would like to suggest that you do a few more loads of laundry each week. What? You read #5, right?

CATS’ WHISKERS –

If you were to put your cat in a darkened maze, she’d confidently stroll all the way through without knocking into the sides or bumping into the wall. Cover her eyes, and she’d still be able to locate a mouse in the field. Even if you covered her ears and nose as well as her eyes and then tried to sneak up on her, she’d probably be aware of you before you got close.

Are cats psychic? Lots of people think so. But scientists have found that cats’ rather astonishing powers of perception are due less to mental wizardry than to the wonders of the whiskers. (No, not me silly!)

Cats use their whiskers constantly. The whiskers act almost like sonar, telling cats how close they are to objects around them. Cats also use their whiskers to communicate. Depending on the position, whiskers tell other cats when to stay away and when to approach.

When you look at cats head-on, you’ll get a pretty good view of their intricate whisker systems. You’ll see a vast collection of long hairs sprouting from their eyes, at the base of their ears, along their cheeks, and under their chins. Some whiskers are specialized, and each set does a different job.

In a very real sense, whiskers are like several extra sets of eyes. They allow cats to see the world in greater detail. In fact, cats who lose their sight may develop whiskers that are longer and thicker than usual.

Because the whiskers have a hot line to the brain, they provide unique insights into your pet’s moods and actions. You can tell when she is contented, irritated, or ready to play. Cats will often broadcast what their next behavior will be with movement of their whiskers.

Whiskers straight out to the sides: This means nothing is stimulating their curiosity or distracting them. They’re happy and content.

Whiskers flattened: When the whiskers shoot straight back from the nose and lie flattened against the cheeks, your cat is afraid of something.

Whiskers fanning and swiveling: Cats who are curious use their whiskers almost like antennae.

Whiskers spread out and angled forward: When a cat points her whiskers straight out in front of her face, watch out. She is putting her sensors ahead of her to feel what she is going to bite.

Because the whiskers are so sensitive, petting or stroking them is the equivalent of shouting in your cat’s ear. It’s a good idea to let children know not to pull on a cat’s whiskers.

A Word With Whiskers – May 10
Baby Socks – by Bonita Chambers

The gray tuxedo kitten decided he would live with us after his feral mother was hit by a car and died. His tiny feet looked like little white socks so we named him Baby Socks. We fed him and talked to him until he finally trusted us enough to pet him and pick him up. We took him to the vet for shots and neutering. Even still, he was not an inside cat. He wanted to patrol his own domain outside. However, when I would sit outside, he would jump into my lap, his white feet kneading my legs.

We were also owned by a 10 lb Yorkie named Sugar. Baby Socks got used to her using ‘his’ backyard. They formed a truce where she didn’t chase him and he didn’t hiss at her. Baby Socks grew to weigh 20 lbs., twice the size of the dog.

At the same time, Sugar grew older. By age 16, she had cataracts in both eyes. Due to age and numerous health problems, Sugar went blind. Despite her blindness she knew how to navigate the rooms in the house, and we left the furniture in place so she wouldn’t get confused or hurt.

We did worry about her going out in the yard. A slope ran down to a creek where snakes or raccoons could harm her. We took her on trips to the bathroom and made sure she was able to follow our voice back to the door.

Eventually Sugar lost her hearing. We had to watch her every move when she was outside and pick her up to bring her back inside.

It wasn’t long before we noticed Baby Socks was following Sugar whenever she was in the yard. If she got too close to the slope, he got in front of her and nudged her in the right direction, safely to the door. He became her self-appointed “seeing-eye cat”! Sugar died when she was 17. Baby Socks seemed to know she was gone, but he watched whenever we opened the back door, just in case.

He still patrols the yard. I tell him what a good cat he is and maybe we might get another dog someday. He doesn’t seem impressed. If that day comes, I’m sure Baby Socks will once more work out a truce, and a friendship, with whatever new canine enters his domain.

Here are more ways that cats express their undying affection for us:

8. Cats Love with Kneading. Kneading behaviors—front paw treading on soft surfaces—hearken back to kittenhood. Kitten paws knead against the mother cat’s breasts to induce milk to be released. Adult cats continue the behavior when they’re feeling most relaxed and content and loved, and that’s often when being petted on the owner’s lap. Kneading is an obvious expression of adoration.

9. Cats Love with Playing. Kittens play out of pure enjoyment, and many never outgrow playtime. Some cats may actually control the interaction of petting by moving just out of reach—so YOU must go to THEM. Their most favorite playmate typically is a trusted, beloved companion.

10. Cats Love with Sleeping. As sleep champs, felines typically sleep up to 16 hours a day. Because they are most vulnerable during sleep, the place your cat chooses to snooze must be a secure and trusted location. There is no greater loving compliment than a cat choosing your lap for a favorite sleep spot.

11. Cats Love with their Eyes. A kitty’s eyes are proportionately very large—if human’s eyes were the same proportion, our eyes would be eight inches across! As such, cat eyes are important assets for survival, yet extremely vulnerable. Cats that place their faces and wide-open eyes near a human express great trust and love. A slow “eye blink” from across the room is considered a cat kiss.

12. Cats Love with their Butts. This is another “back handed compliment” that cats offer to only their most trusted, beloved people. Because kitties identify each other by scent, butt-sniffing is the equivalent to a very personal hand shake. When your cat jumps on your lap and presents her tail in your face, the invitation is obvious—not that you need to sniff!

13. Cats Love with their Tails. In a similar fashion, the “elevator butt” pose invites you to give special attention. Simply scratch her above the tail. Cats also signal their love when they approach you with the tail held straight up, and the end slightly tipped over. Kittens use this to greet their mother—and adult cats continue to treat their favorite humans like a beloved mom, with tails flagged high in respect.

14. Cats Love with Meowing. Cats rarely meow at other cats. Kitty uses these vocalizations specifically to interact with her people. Do you make a point to talk with those you dislike? Neither do cats! Even when kitty pesters you with lots of meows, she’s interacting with you out of love.

How Cats Love – Part 1 (from cats.about.com)

There's no doubt that cats love us as much as we love them. People who haven't been blessed with furry feline love have a difficult time believing this though, because kitties show affection very differently than people do. In fact, some cat behaviors that puzzle, aggravate or even offend people are a cat's way of expressing undying affection.

1. Cats Love with Purrs. Her purrs can mean a variety of things, from delight to expressions of concern. And kitty purrs range from soft and subtle to Mack-truck loud. When your cat purrs in your presence, you can be sure she’s expressing her love for you.

2. Cats Love with Bunting. When a cat cheek-rubs you, head-bumps your face, or pushes against you, he leaves his scented signature. These behaviors, termed bunting, are expressions of affection cats display to other cats, dogs-and their most favorite people.

3. Cats Love with Spraying. Say it ain’t so! But it’s true—if your cat has decided to baptize your bed or other belongings with urine, you should consider it a back-handed compliment. Cats use their own scent to calm themselves down. Kitties feeling upset over separation anxiety or other issues often target areas that smell the most like their beloved owners…such as the bed.

4. Cats Love with Rolling. When kitty throws himself on the ground at your feet, and rolls around, consider this a loving greeting and a solicitation for attention. Presenting the tummy in this fashion places the cat in a vulnerable posture. So cats generally reserve the rolling around for people they truly love.

5. Cats Love with Scratching. Just as with the spraying, cat scratching leaves both scented and visual marks of ownership. Pay attention to where your cat scratches the most. The areas most important to kitty often are related to those places associated with the owner, like a favorite chair where you sit.

6. Cats Love with Gifting. Mighty hunter cats that catch everything from toys to bugs, mice or frogs, often share the bounty with those they love. Kitties who present you with this bounty deserve praise. They wouldn’t bring these special gifts if they didn’t love you.

7. Cats Love with Grooming. Cats spend an enormous amount of time self-grooming. They also groom each other, but shared grooming behaviors only happen between friendly cats. Kitties that groom their human by licking your skin or hair, or even nibbling or sucking on your clothing, indicates great affection. This spreads familiar scent and helps mark you as an important part of her family group.

A Cat's Diary -

Day 84 of my captivity…

My captors continued to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from clawing the furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another house plant.

Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded. Maybe I should try this at the top of the stairs.

In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair. I must try this on their bed.

Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body in an attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little kitty cat I was. This is not working according to plan.

There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary confinement throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the food. More important, I overheard that my confinement was due to my powers of inducing something called ' allergies.' Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit.

The bird, on the other hand, has got to be an informant. He speaks with them regularly, and I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room, his safety is assured. But I can wait.

It's only a matter of time. =^.^=

FOOD STAMPS FOR CATS: New Program Helps Low-Income Families Keep Their Companions

The Pet Food Stamps program, a registered NYS non-profit corporation, has been created to fill the void in the United States Food Stamp program which excludes the purchase of pet food & pet supplies. In these rough economic times, many pet owners are forced to abandon their beloved pet to animal shelters due to the inability to pay for their basic food supply & care.

There are over 50 million Americans who currently receive Food Stamps, many with dogs or cats, who simply cannot afford to feed their animals, and these cherished companions are dropped off at animal shelters where they will most likely be put to sleep. Many people are also forced to choose between feeding their pets or themselves.

A recent New York Times article states that “animal shelters have reported a steep rise in the number of cats & dogs being surrendered as owners face unemployment, home foreclosures, evictions & other financial hardships.” As more families struggle with difficult choices like paying the rent or buying food, some have to choose between keeping their pet & putting food on the table.

Seven million pets are surrendered to shelters each year due to the inability of pet parents to pay for food, with four million of those pets put to sleep. The Pet Food Stamps program aims to eliminate the needless death of these loving pets & keep families together.

The Pet Food Stamps program, due to the generosity of contributors & patrons, are able to eliminate that heart-wrenching decision by making sure these pet owners are given free monthly home delivery of all necessary food supplies to maintain the health & vitality of their pets.

The program is available to U.S. residents who are currently receiving food stamps, or whose income is around or below the poverty level. Applicants complete a brief online form. Due to the popularity of the program, which speaks to its great need, approval of applications currently takes several weeks. Pet Food Stamps is getting up to 3000 requests per day, and more than 45,000 people have already signed up.

Once need is determined & the application approved, the families get pet food each month for a 6-month period from pet food retailer PetFlow. It is supported by private donations.

With the continued growth of the Pet Food Stamps program, the founders hope to expand the program later this year to include offering free or heavily discounted veterinary care for qualified program beneficiaries.

Happy Cinco de MEOW!

This blog will coincide with one of my favorite cultural events, Cinco de MEOW.

It’s a day devoted to celebrating feline culture, rather like every other day of the year, but with the addition of fish tacos.

To be clear, it’s not just a day about cats. It’s a day about cats and couches.

Most people do not understand the important history of this day. Cinco de MEOW commemorates the anniversary of the first day a cat and a couch were brought together, in ancient Egypt. Cats have never forgotten this, and instinct calls kitties around the world to observe this judicious pairing of cats and furniture with a holiday nap.

Cinco de MEOW is a time for carousing on the couch.

I will be napping in my usual place all morning, and then living it up with an exciting afternoon on the other end of the sofa. I expect the stroll from one end to the other to be a special highlight of the day. You will want to be sure your couch is ready for the fiesta!

As a human, it’s important that you support your cat to have the best possible Cinco de MEOW.

Fluff the pillows
Wait on your kitty
Prepare special foods
People like to add a Mexican flair to Cinco de MEOW, which is fine with cats, as long as you make sure to add tuna to everything.

Okay, on a more serious note… This Cinco de Mayo, Humane Societies across the nation will be throwing fiestas. Kitten season is the perfect time for this new event, Cinco de MEOW. Cinco de MEOW promotions at Humane Societies are basically a good way to promote adoptable cats and let people know that they have a lot of them who need homes this spring.

Although kittens can be cute and cuddly, it’s important to not forget that adult cats need a family too. They’re a lot easier, because you don’t have to go through all the kitten phases and you can bond just as well with them.

Some cat lovers say that when it comes to getting a pet, cats do not get the consideration they deserve. Operations Coordinator Denise Plemmons says, “I don’t think a lot of people realize what a good friend they [cats] can be and good support through hard times. They are a part of your family, becoming companions you can lean on if you need to.”

Because dogs gave higher adoption rates, the theme for Cinco de MEOW is helping cats overcome odds. This Cinco de MEOW, Humane Societies are striving to adopt as many cats as possible. It takes only one person to make a difference. Every adoption is marked as a success!

TGIF meows from the NICE Crew
Hi Amber & Big Apple Gang,
Q Trixie meowed a sleepy thank you for the sweet blog you left on her page about her reign as CC queen last month! She's enjoying her time away from blogging but her cyclonic winds will blow again in a couple of months.

Woohoo...Friday has finally arrived. Why am I so excited? Simple because Dad & the kids are home on the weekends so that means more Patchy attention time...MOL! I'm famous, or perhaps infamous, for jumping up on any available lap & kneading as hard as I can. I love showing them how much I love them...even if they do get a few minor puncture wounds...MOL!
Today is another sunny but warm day with some light winds blowing into the windows which mom opened up earlier. Outside girl Sassee is being very grumpy about anyone sitting in the master bedroom window & keeps climbing up to try smacking us. Mom has scolded her several times so hopefully she'll soon realize that we're not going to come out into her 'kingdom' & try to cause problems. Mom says it's the feral in her coming out again. Hmmm...let me whack at her mom. I hate that she hissed at me anyway so let me teach her a paw lesson she won't soon forget because I'm quite a bit bigger than she is. Darn...mom said no so I guess I'll have to be content hissing at her through the screen...SIGH!
Q Trixie is getting ticked off at her & has been chasing Fluffers around the house to work off her frustrations. The thing is that Fluffers is loving it...MOL! Zaboo is laying in the target window right now as if he's daring her to come back because he's even upset with her...& that takes quite a bit because he's so laid-back. Luckily Joseph ran interference & convinced Sassee to get away from the window but even he can't control her sassy catitude. Mom definitely named her right...MOL!
Well I've got to get pouncing because mom is trying to catch up some laundry & still needs to clean up all the dog fur in the family room where Sammie is shedding.

We're back into our 'normal' routine now so will be doing daily voting ONLY on Saturday & Sunday. Have a pawsome weekend & I'll meow at you again next week.

For The Love Of Cats – A Human Introspection

Of all the animals who have shared our lives for generations, we know the least about the cat. That doesn’t mean we love them any less; in fact, the air of mystery each cat carries is one of the reasons we love them so much. Cats have never changed to suit our desires. They play by their own rules and we love and admire them for their independence of spirit.

Cats started hanging around us because we were useful to them. Our switch from hunter-gatherers to farmers meant that we attracted lots of fat, little rodents to our grain stores. The cat has been welcome in our barns ever since, and by our hearths as well.

Few cats have to earn their living today and many have lives that keep them completely indoors, hunting for little beyond a warm place to sleep. More than 20 years have passed since the cat claimed the title of #1 pet over the dog, and the gap just keeps widening.

The closer we get to our cats, the more we find to love them. They offer warm companionship, endless entertainment and soothing comfort. Science concurs; pets in general- cats in particular, are good for us in countless ways. They keep us busy, keep us from being lonely and even help keep us healthier.

We can’t imagine living without animals in our lives. We love cats, from the purr of a new kitten’s greeting to the last sad good-bye of an aged friend. We love the snuggles on the couch while watching TV, the silly games with a string toy or laser pointer, the sharing of a joke or a secret or even a bit of our dinner. Our cats are always with us, in spirit even when they cannot be with us in person.

Every cat lover knows cats don’t care who you are or what you look like. They love us regardless. Cats teach us, heal us, make us laugh, and break our hearts with their passing. Cat people understand the benefits of feline companionship because we live with cats, love them, and care for and about them. The strength of the human-animal bond and the growing importance of pets in our lives is phenomenal. We humans celebrate the CAT.

Welcome to the Beach house. Ok mom’s house is 20 blocks away but I deserve the best, I am Queen. MOL Come enjoy the beach and we can have a BBQ too. Thank you for stopping by and pushing my votey button. You are the best furriends ever. I can’t believe we are already at the end of the month. I hope you enjoyed my catpaign. Here are my furriends and their rankings. I saw Gromit get her giant rosette at the Del Mar show. I am currently ranked at 38 but I don’t go to many shows and I need to place in those shows. These kitties go to most of the shows and always place. They are use to being in the shows, some have been going for years. Go to cfaswhhp.org, Past HHP winners, 2011-2012 to see their pictures. They are so pretty. Some were found on the streets, some were rescued at local shelters or rescue groups. Gromit was found in a back yard She is the oldest kitty showing.

~Queen Trixie's final day in 'office'~ April 30th
Hello & happy Tuesday every kitty! This is the last day that I’ll be meowing to you from the Queen’s chair so my big sis & head chef, Patches, has whipped up a banquet that will amaze your senses & tantalize your taste buds as my way of thanking all the sweet kitties that pounced by this month. At dawn tomorrow we’ll be vacating the cabin with our royal mementos & will say farewell to the beautiful wooded area that I've called my home for an entire month. All kitties that have visited are suggested to make sure everything they brought along has been reclaimed because once I pack away the royal gowns I’ll no longer be responsible for my actions & anything missing may never be seen by you again...MOL...but until then I must remain as dignified as possible & therefore I call my royal criers forth & hand them the final royal decree to announce:

~*~This gala event will be held at the HONEYWELL CENTER in Wabash, IN in the Honeywell Room (see pics in my gallery) & will be followed by a roller skating party at their skating rink, where music, skates & the use of the party room are all included. All food will be provided by Honeywell’s famous catering service so come hungry & loosen up those leg muscles for a day of roller skating fun as I say Bon Voyage to royal duties!!~*~

*Formal dress is optional for the coronation ceremony but I highly recommend a change of comfortable clothes for skating if you plan to stay for the party afterward.*

Good Morning loyal kitty subjects! Teehee…I’ve wanted to meow that all month but didn’t want to offend anyone so waited until my time was nearly over…MOL! I hope all of you slept well at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge because today we’re going to be visiting DISNEY’S MAGIC KINGDOM to wrap up our final road trip (pics in my gallery). ~Queen Trixie's Final Zoo Trip~ Sat. April 27th
Happy Caturday Amber, Lelu & Cody! I’m sad to meow that this will be our last weekend outing to a zoo. I’ve enjoyed having all of you accompany me & would like to give each of you a musical water globe with a zoo animal inside as a memento of our time together. Thank you for all your votes. I am so excited. We are almost done with the month. I am one special little kitty.
Today is my Sister Callie’s first year Crossing Anniversary. She was so special. I knew when mom first rescued me I had to get Callie’s approval. I knew she was the boss. MOL
Now that we have talked about CFA Shows and TICA Shows I just don’t know what else to meow about. I am going to another CFA Show but we need to decide which ones. More traveling in the car. MOL In case I didn’t tell you, you can’t wear a collar at the show. Some rescues have a collar on and we let them know they need to take the collar off when they get put in the judges cage. At the CFA shows, we always cheer for all the kitties getting a rosette in the household pet category. We are the noisy bunch. MOL
I think I will leave some Cat Quotations. We are smarter than humans but they just don’t know it. Hehe

I don’t know about you but I think TICA sounds a little scary to me. I know some of you show in TICA and are use to it. I don’t know if could have judges looking and judging me like a purebred. I think my cuteness does pretty good for me . MOL
How many of you go to TICA shows and how many to CFA shows? Do you have to travel far and do you like the car? Mom is lucky we all don’t mind the car. We even go to stores with mom after we go to the vet. I don’t mind but sometimes I just want to be home. Right now I’m on the couch with mom writing up my blog. MOL
I have a question of the day. How many of you like to travel in a car? My sister Angel Callie loved to ride in a car. She always had to look out the window. I just like to relax and watch mom. So does Smokey and Angel. Angel Sassy didn’t like the car at all.

~Queen Trixie's Animal Tales~ April 25th
Good Morning sweet kitties! Thank you for pouncing by my Imperial cabin with your loving support & sweet blogs. Today is supposed to be warmer with highs in the mid-50s so please wear a jacket while you’re out hiking or exploring. *FYI*The coronation time has been set!! It will be on May 1st at 7am PT (10am ET) due to the work schedule of Spunky’s mom.
Today I’d like to meow to you about another special kitty whose daring deeds will amuse you & show just how resourceful a kitty can be when they’re determined.
TOBY (from Timmy #8851)-Toby was a special super smart Manx cat who always seemed to be one step ahead of mom & dad as he thought of things to get them out of bed to feed him. He learned to jump up to turn the bedroom lights on, so dad moved the hamper to impede his access. Toby circumnavigated that obstacle & instead learned how to flip the switch to turn on the clock radio to wake mom up in the middle of the night. That time dad threw a towel over the radio. Not to be deterred on his waking ploys, Toby then learned to roll the bedroom closet doors back & forth on the runners so that mom would reach out & swat at him. Eventually mom or dad would put Toby outside so then he started climbing a tree to get on the roof so he could tap on the window outside their bedroom. They couldn't very well move the tree…MOL! Mom always ended up giving in by letting Toby in. He also fought the neighborhood "bully", a very big, mean German shepherd who had already killed several cats in the area. One day mom heard a noise on the porch & looked out in time to see the dog running up on the porch to grab Toby. Bad move on the dog’s part! Toby quickly turned on the dog, jumped on his neck and started ripping the dog's nose open. Fearing for his face & possibly his life, the dog took off with Toby still riding him. Later that night Mom got a call from neighbors asking them to pay for the vet bills for the dog. Mom said, "I don't think so." & that was the end of that conversation…MOL! Toby also loved to go swimming. One night mom heard coonhounds baying and opened the door to see Toby running across the fields with dogs on his heels, dragging a muskrat trap on his leg. He must have gotten it while swimming & managed to pull it up to get home, but it was a close call. When Toby was 17 he still wanted to go out in the cold sometimes, but spent a lot more time curled up on moms lap. When he became very sick & began having a lot of accidents in the house, loving mom helped him cross the Rainbow Bridge to ease his suffering. To this day Mom always remembers their super smart Toby & the adventure filled long life he lived.

I hereby present Angel Toby’s family with the Calico Medal of Ingenuity for his ability to overcome obstacles put in his path & thank them for sharing his touching story.

Penalties: Judges can penalize but not disqualify for unrepaired umbilical hernia, damaged ears or eyes as a result of injury, spots, patches, or sprinkling of incorrect color i.e. color faults other than lockets and belly spots.
Cats that have been declawed shall not be penalized. As you remember, you can’t be shown in the CFA shows if you have been declawed.
Household Pet Color Classification-Each household pet may be present to an Allbreed Judge in order to determine the correct color on each entry, prior to the start of judging, and that classification will hold throughout the entire show.
My color classification is Crème and White. I am medium hair length. I also have a kink at the end of my tail. That would be a disqualification as a pure breed in CFA but I could be shown as a household pet. A judge once told the visitor to the cat show when he was handling me that I had a kink at the end of my tail and it was a disqualification for pure breeds but it’s character for household pets. MOL I wounder what TICA would say about my tail.

As you can tell, CFA is judges choice in finals for household pets and in TICA the household pets are judged by the same rules as purebreds.
I would be judged by color, markings, my fur. HMMM
Disqualifications. Biting three times. Surgically altering a cat for cosmetic purposes, examples are tail docking, prosthetic testicles, ear cropping, abnormalities not breed specific but rather occur in all cats. All or part of the tail missing except when board approved breed, having more or less than five toes on each front foot and four on each back foot unless proved to be a results of injury or as authorized by board approved standard. Polydactyls in any breed authorized approved standard shall be limited to no more than 7 toes on any foot. Undershot or overshot jaws or any malocclusion of the jaws, visible or invisible tail faults are disqualification at the discretion of the judge or as required by the board approved standard. Total blindness, inability to bear or support weight or walk normally, abnormal positioning of legs, feet while standing examples bowed or cow-hocked legs, splaying of the feet, or obvious toeing in or out of the feet. Small size not in keeping with the breed, inability to breathe normally with a closed mouth, abnormalities of the sternum.

WOW…what a surprise for mom to wake up & see our doggie as the DOTD runner for today! If you have a DC profile please paw her a vote & give her a big purr of thanks for working her paws to the bone last month during my catpaign. She spread the word with a happy wag of her tail & lots of slobbery kisses & I really appreciated all the added votes from our sweet doggie pals! She’s definitely deserving of her 2nd badge now that she’s all grown up (she got her first one shortly after joining DC) so I’m happily tooting a horn on her behalf today!

Thank you for pouncing by with your support of me this month! Can you believe the last full week of my reign is already here? I’ve been having so much fun with all of you at the Imperial Cabin this month & it’s great to see the tulips & other spring flowers blooming outside of it. I’ve still got some heroic & unusual CC furiends to tell you about though so hold on tight because my spinning isn’t over yet…MOL! Today I’m featuring a very special kitty in our community that many of you know so grab a plate full of scrumptious flavored muffins & catnip coffee prepared by our head chef Patches & aide-de-camp Angel Gracie & I’ll get started meowing about THOMAS #127574!

Thomas'Mom was volunteering at a local animal shelter when this little 3 week old kitten was brought in after having been badly abused by some children. The abuse broke his back and resulted in paralysis and no bowel / bladder control. The shelter kept him until he was 12 weeks old & healed an abscess, & because of his incontinence was bathed 2 x/day. They put a cut down litter box in his cage in hopes that he would use it but if he couldn't then he would have been deemed unadoptable and euthanized. Mom fostered him & then adopted him because he was not able to use a litter box, even though he enjoyed rooting around in the litter. Mom had owned a dachshund in the past that ruptured a disc and was paralyzed & a vet taught her how to take care of him, so she knew she could express Thomas' bowels and bladder & take care of him. Sweet Thomas is a true ambassador for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals & I hereby present him with the Queen’s Perseverance Medal for being able to overcome hardships that no baby kitty should ever have to endure! His life is now filled with the love & attention he deserved from the start & is the purrfect ambassador to spread the word because of his purrsonal experience. Thank you Thomas & mom for sharing your story!

Ribbon flat colors are as follows: First place-Dark Blue, Second Place-Red, Third Place-Yellow, Fourth Place-Green, Fifth Place-White, Best of Division-Black, 2nd Best of Division-Purple, 3rd Best of Division-Orange.
There are no ribbons for Breed awards, they are simply named by the judge.
Final awards shall be rosettes with the appropriate award printed on one of the streamers. Other awards such as cups, trophies, medals, gift certificates, books, magazine subscriptions, cash, bonds and certificates benefitting special projects approved by TICA are permitted.
If there are fewer than 10 cats, kittens, alters, or household pets competing, judges in either allbreed or specialty rings shall present the top five. If there are fewer than five entries in any class the club is required to provide rosettes for the number of entries competing.
Household pets kittens-the number of rosettes awarded shall be equal to the number of kittens up to 10 max.
20 of fewer cats presents (cats, kittens, alters, household pets) awards the Best through fifth best final awards. Top 6-9 (21 to 24 cats present) 21 cats present Best through sixth except HHP kittens, 22 cats present Best through seventh except HHP kittens, 23 cats present Best though 8th best except HHP kittens, 24 cats present Best through 9th except HHP kittens.
Top 10 format 25 or more cats present (cats, kittens, alters or household pets/household pet kittens Best though 10th best final awards.

Non-vetted shows-Any exhibitor, judge or show committee member suspecting any cat of having fungus, fleas, ear mites, or any infectious or contagious illness may report same to the show manager.
Show flyers shall indicate whether a show is Vetted or Non-vetted.

Thank you for all your support and stopping by and pressing my votey button. You are all so very special and it means so much to me that you stop by.
So have any of you looked for a show close to where you live yet? Are you going to send your mom or dad first to the show? Remember they can get all the information on how to show you at the shows website, or the flyer. You might even get showed without you knowing until it’s to late. Mom never tells me it’s almost time for a show. I figure it out by our outings to the stores then having my nails done and my bath. Mom you can’t fool me, I know. I just don’t know how far we have to travel.
Ok, now it’s time for all of us to find out about the TICA(The International Cat Association). Mom has the booklet with the show rules. I wonder if I will go to a TICA show.
All TICA shows are in Arcadia, Ca at least 2 ½ hour drive. SIGH I guess I am getting real good at traveling.
A kitten by definition is a feline under 8 calendar months of age. A Cat is a feline not less than 8 calendar months of age. Benched cats are cats, kittens, alters, and household pets present and qualified for an entire show. Registered cat a pedigree that has been filed with an Executive Office and assigned a registered number. A Recognized Breed is any recognized breeds of felines listed in the rules.
Wow this booklet is big. I’ll get you the information during the last 10 days of my catpaign and if we need more time during my reign.

Thank you for all your support and voting for me. I love it when you push my votey button. You all make me feel so special.
We have went through all my shows. Had ice cream at all the Hemet’s shows. I love the ice cream social don’t you? We have some of the back ground for the shows. I wonder if I left anything out? HMMMM
Oh yes, at the cat shows have you ever noticed that in spite of all the gorgeous, exotic and rare breeds being shown the largest crowds are with the household pets. We are all healthy, beautiful, some with special little head butts for the judges are everyone’s favorite. If you are friendly, not easily frightened, likes attention you too can be a show cat in the HHP category. We are a very special group of kitties. Some love to play with the judges, some head butt the judges, some play with the judges toys ( I don’t know why, a parrot feather or a little toy wand, please I like the better toys like my big feather wand or my catnip banana. The fling ama string is fun and the Da Bird is the best.
I know you have your favorite toys. Do you think you would play with some of those toys the judges have?
Mom goes to the vendors and gets the free samples for us and then look for my special toy in between our judging. There are a lot of cool toys and food/water bowls and other things. Some for our moms and dad and lots for us. I haven’t got a new kitty tree from one of the vendors or kitty bed but I did get a warm sack to crawl into. Yew gets one every time he comes to a kitty show and mom saw his. She got a warmer one for me and maybe next time I will get a cooler one.

~Queen Trixie's Tales~ Thursday April 18th
Our thoughts & prayers go out to all the people in West, Texas as an explosion at a fertilizer plant devastated the area around it at about 8 pm last night. Over 160 are injured, at least 3 firefighters are missing & several workers & local residents have already lost their lives in the horrific explosion that registered 2.1 on the Richter scale! Please keep this community in your thoughts & prayers as they continue their search for the missing & try to recover from the shock.
I also send out a prayer request for the people of Boston who are still trying to understand why bombs were set off at the end of their world famous marathon on Monday. Law enforcement is working around the clock to find the cowards that did this & our prayers are also with them for their diligence & determination to bring them to justice!

It’s going to be another stormy day at the Imperial Cabin later today but right now you couldn’t tell it. The sun is shining & we have a temp of 65 BUT the wind is wickedly strong & we're under a tornado watch!! All cabin visitors are requested to stay inside to avoid any falling limbs/branches! Since it’s too windy to be outside safely I’m going to meow to you about another one of our fabulous CC friends. Grab a spot on the plush carpet or one of the luxurious cat beds around the throne room, grab some snacks from the buffet table (prepared by our head chef Patches & top aide-de-camp Gracie) & turn your attention to today’s tale about CHARLOTTE #196844!
The family had an attempted break-in at their house the last week of January. Everyone was asleep when Charlotte jumped up on her mom at about 4:30am meowing very loudly. Mom heard banging & quickly checked to see if her husband was ok since he has medical problems. Nothing wrong there, but the banging continued so she looked out the bathroom window & was shocked to see a man knocking over the garbage cans. She turned on the outside lights, but he didn’t leave, instead he moved to the back door, which leads into the mud room, & started banging on that door. She couldn’t imagine what his intention was & became fearful. The alarm was on at the house so she called 911 & stayed on the line with the dispatcher while he continued banging on the door. Then he managed to push the top window out of the door & entered the mud room by finding the locks & unlocking the door, where he then proceeded to bang on the kitchen door. Just in the nick of time the police arrived at the back of the house & took him down! It turned out that the man was extremely intoxicated & lost but it was a very frightening experience for Charlotte & her mom (luckily dad slept through it) & to this day Charlotte will not go into the mud room, which she previously enjoyed almost daily for a sunbath. I hereby present Charlotte with the Golden Catnip Custer of Heroism for alerting her mom to the danger & thank her for sharing her story.

Thank you for all your support and pawing by my votey button. I appreciate all the votes I’m getting.
Now I will tell you my rescue story. Mom went outside to put food out for the ferals. She went to the side of the garage to put some food for the tom cat. He waits there and some of the others are closer to the house. Mom put his food in his dish, he always stood by mom when she poured his food. Then all of a sudden 3 kittens came running out from between the shed and garage. We were so hungry. Mom looked at the tom cat and said this is new. He just stood and watched us. Mom said he was a very good kitty. Then mom went in to get a carrier but we scattered. The next day she caught one of my sibs then saw the other one, she was very shy between the garage and shed. She slowly put food down for her to eat then with the other hand caught her. She took her in and put her in the room with my brother. She never saw me, I wasn’t there. The next day she could here me, I was meowing but I was caught in the neighbors yard and it was a mess with a doggy barking at me at the end of a rope. Mom kneeled in the alley and pulled the fenced up. Put some food out and I came running. She was able to get me then took the food to the tom cat. I was with my sibs. We went to the vet and got deflead and got medicine for our ear infections. We were under weight and was 4-5 weeks old. My brother was only a 1lb and my sister and I was 2 lbs. When mom brought us out to the front room I knew this was my furever home. I even got on the couch to let Callie know I wanted to stay. I never got real close, I knew she didn’t like that. She looked at me then went to sleep. I knew I was in. Mommy found a home after one month for my sibs. They are together and inside kitties. The lady that adopted them was a vet tech that just moved to Oceanside, Ca It’s at least an hour away from where we live.
