Geoffroy's Cat - Although they are one of the most
widespread felids in the open areas of South America, Geoffroy’s cats are another of the little known, small spotted cats of the world. Their coat ranges from brilliant ochre in the northern parts of their range, to a silvery grey in the south, with intermediate shades in between. Numerous small, round, black dots of nearly equal size are placed at equal distances from one another, and form a black ‘necklace’ on the chest. They have several black streaks on the crown and two on each cheek. Under parts are lighter and also marked with solid spots. The legs are fairly stout, and banded on the upper portion with spots extending down to the toes. The black tipped tail, which is about half of the head-body length, has several black rings. Large, rounded ears are black on the outside and flagged with white central spots. Irises vary from deep golden to a greenish-grey. In addition to the spotted form, there is also a melanistic variety found more commonly in the forested and wetland areas. Four sub species vary considerably in coat color and size. The largest cats are from the southern parts of their range, and have a longer, paler coat. As they extend to the north up into Paraguay, they are smaller and darker. Cats from northern Argentina were once considered a separate species because of their indistinct spotting, and called ‘salt desert cats’. In some areas, Geoffroy’s cats can be confused with related species, the Kodkod Leopardus guigna and the Pampas Cat Leopardus colocolo. Geoffroy’s Cats are distributed throughout the pampas grasslands, marsh grasslands, dry chaco shrub woodlands, and the alpine salt desert of northwest Argentina. Most of their range is semi-arid, but they prefer areas with dense vegetation. These small cats have been found between sea level and 3,500 ft. in Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. They can be encountered in the foothills of the Patagonian Andes, but not in the conifer forests where they are replaced by the Kodkod. Much of their range is shared by the Pampas Cat. In southern Brazil, the northern-most part of their range, the population overlaps with that of the Oncilla Leopardus tigrinus. Both these cats are morphologically similar in body proportions and appearance, and researchers have observed a small number of hybrids between the two species. Home range sizes in wet pampas grasslands of Argentina averaged 1.5 to 2.1 sq. mi., with male territories 25% larger than those of females. Geoffroy’s Cats spend most of their time on the ground, though they climb well and spend some time in trees. . Because they are good swimmers, the local people call them ‘fishing cats’ and claim that they readily enter water. In Chile, one female was known to have crossed a 98 ft. wide fast-flowing river at least 20 times.

Iberian Lynx, the rarest of the rare wild cats
The Iberian Lynx is a small wild cat, smaller than its relatives in the northern part of Europe, the Eurasian Lynx. It weighs 20 to 30 lbs., the male being heavier and larger than the female. The head and body length is 33 to 43 in, with the short tail an additional 4.7 to 12 in. It has very distinctive Leopard like marks with a light grey or light brownish-yellow coat. The Iberian Lynx was distributed over the entire Iberian Peninsula as recently as the mid-nineteenth century. It was found throughout Spain and Portugal and likely in the French Pyrenees. Numbers declined in the first half of the 20th century due to the decline of goat-herding (which helped maintain habitat for rabbit, the main food source of the Iberian Lynx) and its replacement by grain cultivation. The decline accelerated in the 1950s because myxomatosis, a disease which decimated rabbit populations, spread into Spain from France, where it was introduced in 1952. In the 1970s, the estimated population was just couple of thousand found in isolated pockets of southern Iiberian Penninsula. By 2002, the population had been reduced to just 300. Despite man's efforts the population kept on declining and in 2007 the figure stood at just around 100 in the wild. But after rigorous efforts by conservationists, the population is slightly up now at around 200. It is now restricted to very small areas, with breeding only confirmed in two areas of Andalucía, in southern Spain. The decline of the Iberian Lynx in the second half of the 20th century has been mainly due to the decline of its main prey, the rabbit , hunting and loss of the Lynx’s habitat. Hunting the Lynx is illegal now. It's critical status now is mainly due to habitat loss, poisoning, road casualties, feral dogs and poaching. The Iberian Lynx is predominantly nocturnal and is an excellent tree climber. It uses a variety of locations for breeding lairs, even including old stork nests as much as 27 to 36 ft. above the ground. The typical gestation period is about two months; the cubs are born between March and September, with a peak of births in March and April. A litter consists of two or three kittens weighing between 2/3 to 1/2 pounds. Home ranges of males and females generally do not overlap other ranges of the same sex. Male ranges overlap one or more female ranges. Iberian Lynx hunts mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians at twilight, but the European rabbit is its main prey. A male requires one rabbit per day; a female bringing up cubs will eat three rabbits per day. (Information courtesy relivearth.com)
