About Me

Active within 3 Days

Hi! My name is Angel Tuxie

I am Domestic Shorthair from Miami, FL

Nicknames: Just Tuxie or Tux

Age: 20 years old

Gender: F

Coat: short haired

Education: I had seven teeth pulled in 2005 and several more in May 2009. ~~~ Joined the kitties' Red Hat Club in 2007. ~~~ COTD-5/13/08 and again on 7/29/09 (as an angel). Many thanks to all kitties!

My favorite tricks and treats are: I don't do tricks, unless you count posing for pictures, and a bite or two of tuna or chicken is a nice treat.

Where I hang out: I like high places, like a shelf or cabinet.

My favorite grubs: I'm not too fussy about wet food, but I prefer Cat Chow Naturals for dry food.

My pet peeves: Throughout most of my years, I was by myself, so I avoid too much interaction with my housemates.

What I love about my owners: He took me in when nobody wanted me and fixed my mouth when I had bad teeth and could hardly eat.

My cat hobbies: Eating and napping top the list. Unlike the other kitties here, I enjoy posing for pictures, if it isn't overdone. I was a founder of the Red Hat Mouse Hockey team, but I now play on the TIMtations MH team with my beau, Casey

How We Met

Tuxie was an office cat for many years. When I took over the job, I inherited two cats. When I left the job a year and a half later, my replacement did not want cats around. I took Tuxie and Fuzzy home. Fuzzy passed away in early 2004. Tuxie has been with me since May 2002, residing with me at home from November 2003. She was with me longer than any other kitty. Tuxie was 15 when cancer took her on 7/25/09

Good afternoon kitties. Today's topic is: DEPRESSION!!!

No one greets you at the door. The rattle of the leash goes un-noticed. Even the scent of food doesn't get Fido or Fluffy coming. It's not uncommon for pets to come down with depression! Causes might be from illness, loneliness, losing a friend or seasonal.

MAKE EVERY DAY A PLAY DAY: Throwing yourself into some wholehearted play with your pet is perhaps the best way for her to take her mind off her troubles. Get on the floor, tickle her tummy and just be silly.

INCLUDE HIM IN YOUR FUN: If you've recently had a new baby, don't separate the baby from the pet, instead include him in the fun, allow your pet to sniff baby and lay with baby. If you pay too much attention to baby and ignore pet, you are asking for problems.

PLANT SURPRISES: Try hiding some of her favorite treats so she has to 'hunt' for them, this will give Fido or Fluffy to do instead of sitting around moping.

CALL HOME: Dogs and cats may feel lonely when left home alone all day. To perk up your pet, periodically call home and leave a message on the answering machine..hearing your voice will do wonders.

CHEER HER UP WITH MUSIC: Both Dogs and Cats often enjoy music and are less likely to feel depressed when something pleasant is playing. Try leaving the radio on if you are gone all day!

GIVE HIM TIME TO MOURN: It's not uncommon for pets to mourn when they lose a companion....in some cases, they can suffer deep depression. Pet's demonstrate a deep love for one another, just as people do. There is no instant cure for grief, give your pet plenty of time to mourn, give him plenty of love and attention as soon he will bounce back!

BRING HOME A NEW FRIEND: While it's not possible to 'replace' a friend, many pets will feel better when another furry friend joins the home, it will give them another companion to play with.

FOR CATS ONLY:
GIVE A ROOM WITH A VIEW: Without a lot of stimulation, many cats get bored and depressed. To help Fluffy stay entertained, make sure she has a window sill or a cat perch. She can watch birds, butterflies and even people and kitty will be entertained for hours.

FOR ADDED ENTERTAINMENT: Put a bird feeder outside her fave perching window, many kitties will watch the ongoing show for many hours.

TOMORROW: MANGE

Good evening kitties. Today's topic: FIGHTING. Suggested by my sister, KALI!

Every night your cat goes out looking for trouble--and comes back looking he tangled with a blender. While fighting is scary to watch and dangerous for the combatants, it's extremely common!

DON'T GET IN THE MIDDLE: Dogs and cats in the heat of battle aren't discriminating about what or who they bite. Many owners have been mauled while trying to break up a fight, so keep your hands clear. If you feel you must break up a fight, throw a blanket over them, this will protect your hands.

GO DEEP & LOUD: When you see a fight brewing, interrupt the aggression with the loudest, deepest "NO" you can muster. Pets associate a low-pitched voice with a threatening growl and will take it more seriously.

GIVE THEM A BLAST: If the squabble occurs in the vicinity of a garden hose, turn it on your fighting pets...this will "cool" them off.

SIT OUT MINOR BRAWLS: When dogs or cats meet, you can expect a certain amount of posturing, hissing, growling, or tussling. In most cases it is their way of getting acquainted. Even if they start squabbling, chances are the ruckus will calm down in a minute or 2.

FOR CATS ONLY!!

GIVE THEM SEPARATE QUARTERS: Bringing a new cat into the family can raise tension for both the newcomer and the the resident cat. To keep fights to a minimum, provide separate litter boxes, and feed them in separate rooms til they get used to each other.

PROVIDE AN EASY EXIT: When bringing 2 cats together for the 1st time, make sure there is an escape route. This will help prevent them from feeling trapped.

GET THEM IN TWOS: If you want to have 2 or more cats, get them at the same time as kittens. Cats that grow up together are less likely to fight then those they meet later in life.

KEEP THEM INDOORS: If you really love your cat[s] keep her indoors...if you must put them outdoors, build an outdoor enclosure or kitty playground!

TOMORROW: DEPRESSION!

Good afternoon kitties. Todays topic is "EAR MITES". Suggested by: COMMISH CASER!!!

A gentle pat behind the ears no longer brings a grin to your furry friends face. Instead it fires up a scratching frenzy that sends her back legs whirling like an eggbeater.

Ear mites are readily passed between animals, so unless your pet spends most of her time alone, they can be difficult to prevent.

CLEAR THE DEBRIS: When treating your pet for ear mites, it is important to clear away the crust inside the ear before using medication, otherwise the mites will tale cover underneath the crust. Using a small dropper, deposit several drops of mineral oil inside the ear canal and wait for crust to soften. Then fill a rubber ear-cleaning syringe with equal parts of warm water and white vinegar and gently flush the debris out of the ear.

GET A DROP ON THEM: Once your pets ears are clean, vets usually recommend putting a few drops of an OTC medication containing pyrethrins..this is an insecticide made from chrysanthemums. You can purchase medicated at pet stores. Place the drops in each ear according to direction on bottle, the massage the base of the ears for 3-5 minutes to allow the medicine to penetrate.

TRY AN OIL TREATMENT: Instead of using medications, you may want to try mineral oil or baby oil once every day or so. This will smother some of the mites. Heat the oil til it just warm to the touch, fill a dropper with with just enough oil to coat the ear canal.

GO ITALIAN: Garlic and olive oil aren't just for pizza--they can sooth the itch of mites as well. Crush 4 cloves of gaarlic into one cup of olive oil, let sit overnight, then discard the garlic gloves...heat the oil til warm to the touch and place several drops into pets ears..repeat as often as necessary.

STOP THE CYCLE: Ear mites can travel from pet to pet, so if one of your pets has been infected, chances are good all your pets have them...treat all animals at the same time.

BE PERSISTENT: It takes about 3 weeks for a mite to undergo the transition from egg to a major pain in your pets ears, regardless of the treatment you choose, it is important to keep treating your pet through the entire 3 week period in order to eradicate present and future generations.

TOMORROW: Fighting!!! Keep them suggestions coming in!!!

Good afternoon kitties!!! Today's topic is all about those nasty UTI's. Suggested by HT Jesse cause he gets them!!!

She used to go all day without a break, but lately your pent-up pet can hardly wait to go outside. And no sooner does she got out and she wants back in, then has to go out again. UTI's aren't just the 'bane' of bathroom hopping humans, kitties and dogs can get them, too. UTI's make it difficult to urinate. What's more, the inside of the urinary tract can get painfully inflamed.

POUR SOME JUICE: It's a home remedy for people that also works for pets. Cranberry juice, orange juice and other citrus juices boost the acidity of urine, reducing the number of bacteria and helping relieve discomfort. The problem with juices is getting your pet to actually drink it. Try mixing an ounce in with her breakfast food. You can TRY to put out a bowl and see what happens.

PROVIDE FREQUENT POTTY BREAKS: When urine remains in the bladder for a long time, any bacteria that happen to be floating around have more time to multiply, causing infection levels to rise. A pet that only urinates 2 times a day will more likely develop an infection more then one that goes 10 times a day.

ASK FOR ASSISTANCE: DOGS ONLY: Your dog may have great control, but if the only time she gets to go outside is before work and after work, bacteria have plenty of time to do their dirty work. If you can't get home during the day perhaps you can ask a neighbor to let her out for you.

GET THOSE PAWS MOVING: Most dogs and cats can't go around the block without making a deposit. Taking at least two 20 minute walks a day will increase urination and reduce the risk of infection.

WHEN TO SEE HER VET: While most UTI's will clear up on their own even without treatment, occasionally bacteria will swim upstream, causing a dangerous kidney infection.
Symptoms of Kidney infection include frequent or difficult urination and possible blood in the urine. Some pets get feverish and lethargic.
Don't take chances if you notice any changes in your pets normal urinary habits. She may need oral antibiotics to prevent a small infection form turning into a major problem.

Follow the Vets advice and always follow label instructions on any medication..The best time to give antibiotics is right after urination.

Keep them suggestions coming in!! Tomorrow: EAR MITES

Good afternoon kitties!!! Today's topic is "EYES" have it, part 2: VISION PROBLEMS!!!

Your pet has always been a sure-footed beast, but lately she's been bumping into things and looking lost. For some reason your pet's sharp vision has faded.

DON'T PLAY MUSICAL CHAIRS: Moving furniture can confuse dim-sighted animals and even cause injuries. if your cat is playing and barrels into a table leg for example, put your furniture back where it was.

SHOW HIM AROUND: If you do move your furniture around, lead him around on a leash for a day or two to help him find his way. It is also a good idea to confine him to one room until he knows it well. Once he is familiar with the layout, switch him to a different room, most pets love to be around people, so be sure you stay in the room an hour for a few times daily so your pet doesn't feel alone.

BE PREDICTABLE: Stability is important for poorly sighted animals. Leaving their food and water in the same place will help give her a sense of order and security. The same goes for her litterbox, bed and toy box. The less you change things the better.

GIVE HER A LEASH ON LIFE: If your pet has even the slightest trouble seeing, do not allow her to be outside alone without a leash, she will be scared and frightened and may run away or get hit by a car.

IF YOU HAVE A POOL: Pools can be dangerous for pets that can't see where they are going. I have seen blind people fall into pools, so guard your pet by putting a fence around the pool or keep her on a leash.

TRY A NEW HAIRDO: If your pet has vision problems and her hair is in her eyes, trim them away. Too much hair can hinder their vision.

WHEN TO VISIT THE VET: Animals have the uncanny ability to adapt to a new world, they have fine-tuned senses, if their sight goes, their sense of hearing magnifies.

If your pet suddenly doesn't sleep on your bed, or is bumping into furniture, or slow to move when called, however, her vision may be impaired. Call your vet to make an appt. and he will run vision tests to see how advanced the vision problem is and recommend treatment.

KEEP them suggestions coming in!!! TOMORROW: UTI's!

Good morning kitties! Today: The "EYES" have it: "EYE IRRITATIONS"

Your cats is spending more time pawing her crusty eyes then playing with her catnip toys. One of the most common eye problems in pets is conjunctivitis. {Our AJ had this}. Also know as 'pink-eye', it is an inflammation of the membrane covering the inside of the eyelids and the front of the eye.

WIPE IT OUT: To speed healing and make your pet more comfortable, you'll want to clean the discharge from her eyelids. Wet a wet cloth or a cotton ball with warm water, squeeze it out and gently wipe the 'goop' from around your pets eye. Repeat twice daily or as often as needed.

TRY A SCRUB: Instead of using water, you may want to try to OTC eye scrub. Eye scrubs are pH Balanced and may cause less stinging then water. You can buy eye scrubs at your local pet retailer, ones made for humans can be more harsh for your pet.

HELP HIM SHED SOME TEARS: While eye scrubs can help keep the lids clean, you'll also want to wash the surface of the eye. A Good way to do this is with artificial tears, which can help wash away particles that may be causing the problem.

CODDLE HER WITH A COMPRESS: Covering your pets eyes with a damp warm compress can be very soothing. Wet a soft cloth in lukewarm water, wring it out and gently hold it across her eyes for five minutes. This can make your pets eyes feel much better, and it goes a long way toward keeping her eyes clean.

TAKE HIM TO THE BARBER: Regular grooming can help prevent eye irritations before they get started. Fur in your pets eyes can cause irritation that can lead to conjunctivitis if its matted up around the corners of the eye. Brushing the hair back away from the eyes or getting a groomer to cut off the excess hair will prevent irritations.

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: While conjunctivitis isn't difficult to treat, and eye infection can result in permanent damage, so you'll want to see vet at the 1st sign of problems...he may give you eye drops, or an ointment for the eye or a mild antibiotic if the eye is infected. {our Vet gave AJ an ointment to use 2 times daily}

Good Morning. Today's topic: SPRAYING..suggested by my baby brother, Winston..we have Jesse who sprays everything in site {yes he is 'fixed'}

Has your formerly fastidious feline suddenly taken to spraying the house, despite having a perfectly good litterbox down the hall? Don't fret too much, spraying has nothing to do with going to the bathroom.

It is a way to identify his property and covering other scents left by cats...it's your cats way of reassuring himself that he belongs and that he is owner of what he sprays.

SPARE THE ROD: Even if you happen to catch kitty in the act, punishing definitely will NOT work. It is a natural innate behavior in cats and punishing him will not make it stop.

PROVIDE SEPARATE QUARTERS: It's not uncommon for cats to spray when they feel they are competing with other pets in the home. Try keeping them separated in different rooms and show the spraying cat lots of extra attention, make him feel he is wanted and not competing for your attention.

LICK THE PROBLEM: It's natural for cats to groom each other, and once they get started they can literally wash away bad feelings. Once or twice a week, wipe down all your cats with a wet towel. After grooming themselves, they may begin grooming each other, this will keep their aggression and spraying under control.

GIVE THEM EQUAL TIME: Paying more attention to one cat then another will often foster feelings of jealousy and competition. Try petting or stroking all your cats together or at the same time--providing they are all in one spot--. This will increase their social interaction and reduce competition, and maybe he will stop spraying.

CREATE A "NO SPRAY" ZONE: If your cat is repeatedly spraying in the same spot, applying a pet repellent may help turn him away. Many vets recommend repellents containing bitter apple or you may use mothballs, which are stronger.

DO A DEEP CLEANING: If you've recent;y moved and your cat started spraying, it could be traces of a former 'tenant' lingering behind. Scrub the floors, walls and rugs with a combination enzyme and bacteria cleaner, like "Outright Pet Odor Eliminator", there are many different kinds available at Pet retailers. Enzymes in the cleaners dissolve the urine crystals.

KEEP HIM CALM: Cats sometimes spray in response to change. Keeping his schedule consistent will help prevent problems before they start. Always keep his bed and litter box in the same places and always feed him in the same place, keep kitty to a routine.

PRACTICE PREVENTION: 90% of MALES that spray will stop entirely when you get them neutered. Vets recommend neutering/spaying at about 6 months or younger.

WHEN TO SEE HIS VET: Most cats spray to mark territory. Sometimes, however, it can be a warning sign that something serious is wrong, like diabetes, blocked urethra or a UTI...if you suspect any trouble or notice him straining to urinate....see his vet.

TOMORRO: EYE IRRITATIONS

Good afternoon. Today's topic: ARTHRITIS!!!

Is your once graceful cat shuffling around like Walter Brennan? Arthritis can be a real pain in the neck, hip, elbow, back, or anywhere it strikes. There are many types of arthritis and the one most likely to strike your pet is Osteoarthritis. Also called degenerative joint disease.

LIGHTEN HIS LOAD: Heavy pets are considerably more likely to suffer joint pain than their trimmer counterparts. Putting "Fluffy" on a diet is one of the best things you can do for her. Being slim reduces the stress on the joints snd can provide relief.

PUT HIS BEST PAW FORWARD: Regular exercise is vital to controlling the progression of arthritis. Try to take your pet on a walk 3 times a day for 20 minutes. Many cats really like going for walks, although they insist on which way they want to go, unlike a dog.

If you do not have a leash-trained cat, play vigorously with him for 20 minutes, 3 times a day. If 20 minutes seems too long and your pet is limping along, take him home and try shorter walks or play periods.

LET HIM SLEEP INSIDE: When it's cold and damp outside, your arthritic pet is going to hurt. So if he is an outdoors sleeper, bring him in during cold damp nights, your pet will reward you.

MAKE A COZY BED: If your pet sleeps on a hard surface, she will get some relief if you switch her to a soft cozy bed instead. In the cold damp climates you might consider a heated pet bed, available at most local pet retailers.

RAISE HIS TABLE: If your pet has a stiff neck, try putting his food and water bowls off the floor so he doesn't have to lower his head at mealtimes...food bowl stands are available at local pet stores.

HELP HER BE A SOCIAL CLIMBER: If you pet has trouble with stairs, you may want to install a ramp to help him go up and down without assistance.

TRY THE TOWEL TRICK: If your pet is having trouble walking, you can help her out by slinging a towel beneath his belly and using it to help him stand.

FOR DOGS ONLY: {I KNOW MANY OF YOU HAVE DOGS}
BUFFER IT WITH OTC: Give your DOG buffered aspirin, it can be a great help with arthritis pain. Experts recommend 1/4 of a 325-milligram tablet per 10 pounds of dog twice a day.

NEVER GIVE ASPIRIN TO A CAT. It can irritate the stomach.

TIPS FROM SISSY: I would like to add to your blog today about arthritis. I have had it in my hips since 2011 so I do know a thing or two about it. Dr. William prescribed Dasuquin twice a day for me. I also have a heated bed and steps to use to access Mommy's bed. You can see a pic of my steps on the bottom of my page. These small things have really helped me cope much better.

TOMORROW: Spraying!!{pew, what stinks?}

Good afternoon. Today's topic: Itchy FLEAS. This one is really long, so I will do it in 2 parts..PART 2 will be on the CMR ONLY!!! Sorry!

See that itsy flea on your itchy pet? Well, you ain't seen nothin' yet. Within a month, that 1 flea you see can turn into 250,000, infesting not only your pet, but also your home.

These little pests are incredibly difficult to get rid of. In fact, you may never be able to eradicate them 100% from your home or yard. But you can prevent your pet from getting 'buggy'.

BEGIN WITH A BATH: If your pet is willing to climb into the bathtub{What?? Willing?? Give me a break!}, washing his coat with a gentle, non-medicated shampoo will send many fleas right down the drain. If your pet is still scratching after the bath, try again using a flea shampoo.

KEEP HER HIGH & DRY: As an alternative to bathing, try using a 'dry' shampoo, one that foams without water. It's better for your pet if he will tolerate a real bath, but any bath is better then no bath. Never use a flea shampoo intended for dogs on cats, be sure it says you may use use product on kitty.

USE HERBS: Mixing a few drops of Eucalyptus oil in your pets shampoo will help repel fleas. Pennyroyal oil may also be used. UNDILUTED pennyroyal oil can be toxic, so it should never be used full-strength.

GIVE HER A GOOD GROOMING: Pulling a flea comb through your pets coat once a DAY WILL HELP KEEP CRITTERS AWAY. In between strokes, dip the comb in soapy water, this will drown any critters hanging on.

CHOOSE COLLARS CAREFULLY: Traditional flea collars impregnated with insecticides can't handle heavy infestations. They can also be irritating to your pets skin. A better bet might be to buy a collar that contains a synthetic flea-controlling hormone like 'methoprene'. They are virtually non-toxic to animals.

SPRAYS & POWDERS: Treating your pets coat with sprays will quickly wipe out any visitors that may be dining in. There are a variety to choose from. BE sure never to spray into the animals face or eyes, ears, nose or mouth.

Powders are not as effective as sprays, but they can play an important role in flea control. Powder your pet from her neck to her feet and don't forget her tail.Work the powder down close to the skin with a comb...avaoid getting in pets eyes and nose.

GO FOR A DIP: More potent than sprays or powders, flea dip--an insecticide solution in which you immerse your pet--can provide long-lasting protection. Use dips with caution..follow label instructions carefully. BE sure you buy a dip especially for cats, cause dip make for dogs can be deadly for cats.

BRING IN THE HEAVY ARTILLERY: When fleas are showing up in record numbers, you may need to treat the entire house with a house fogger. He recommends using foggers containing methoprene or fenoxycarb, another flea controlling hormone.

PART 2 ONLY ON CMR.

Good afternoon. Today we are discussing DEAFNESS. I can hear well, and I sure hope all of you can as well, but in case you have a hard time!!!

Some cats {and dogs} are born deaf. Others lose their hearing with age or chronic ear infections. Fortunately, with a little extra care, your pet can manage well.

Do they perk up their ears at the sound of their name, can they hear the doorbell, the sound of a can opening, if you notice any of these signs that used to get kitty{or doggie} running and all of sudden, nothing...your worst fear has been has been confirmed, she is not being stubborn, she is deaf.

GIVE HER A LEASH ON LIFE: Always take a deaf pet outdoors on a leash. They cannot hear predators or traffic noises, but you can, so leash her up to avoid any trouble or danger!

PRACTICE PATIENCE: Living with a deaf pet can be a challenge. They're often harder to train and may not play with you as often. You really need to show kindness and patience and it will pay off. Realize that you deaf pet wants to make things normal as much as you do, so be will willing to work gently to help her out.

TRY A NEW LANGUAGE: Your pet cannot hear your commands, but it is possible for them to see them. Hand signals are an excellent way to work with deaf dogs, Even cats that are deaf can benefit from a little signal training. Your vet can recommend a trainer to work with you and your pet.

LEAD HIM BY THE NOSE: Both dogs & cats have a keen sense of smell. In many cases you can summon them by creating olfactory waves---waving fish nibbles or a piece of dried liver through the air. Once your pet gets a whiff, he will realize you want him to come and will be right there.

BE ON TAP: To get your pets attention when she's sleeping or not looking in your direction, walk in front of her and tap her gently. A Deaf animal cannot hear the normal cues that someone is approaching. DO NOT run in the direction of the animal without warning, you will scare her.

SHOW HIM THE LIGHTS: At night, flashing the lights can help get your pets attention. As soon as she looks up, give her the hand signal that tell her what you want her to do {sit, stay, etc}. Then after the pet does what you want, reward her with love or a treat. Eventually your pet will come to realize when you flash the outside lights it is time to come in.

GET A COMPANION: Even if your deaf pet can't hear a stranger at the door, she can get clues from a companion. Dogs for instance will see the companion running to door and will follow. A deaf cat may watch her companion to see when it's time to eat or if someone is coming into the room...companion pets can be invaluable.

KELSEES KAT REMEDIES
Good afternoon. Today's topic is 'BEGGING". Who amongst us begs for mom's food??? Ummm!!!

FEED HER FIRST: If your cat is really full, she won't be inspired to ask for more. {Wanna bet?}

DON'T GIVE INTO GUILT: No matter how much he manipulates your emotions with those sad eyes, remind yourself that kitty has been fed and doesn't need human food.

MAKE HER LEAVE FOR LEFTOVERS: If you decide to slip her a snack, don't do it from the table. Otherwise kitty will begin confusing your mealtime with hers. Always put leftover pieces for kitty in her bowl.

LAY DOWN THE LAW: Usually just raising your voice will send your cat scurrying off in a different direction, if that doesn't work, blow a bike horn or rattle a can full of coins...this will send her dashing to another room.

SAY IT WITH SPRAY: Cats can be incorrigible beggars, even jumping on tables and stealing food when you won't hand it over. To discourage this brazen behavior, surprise your cat with a blast from a spray bottle. Most cats hate water and will jump from the table and run.

ISOLATE THE PROBLEM: When your cat is driving you crazy, tell him "NO" and calmly put him in another room and shut the door til dinner is over. You may get complaints of meowing, but don't let him out until you are done eating.

Good luck kitties!! Mom has already spoiled us and we always beg {me and Jesse}

Today's topic: BAD STINKY BREATH!!!

ATTACK THE PLAQUE: Think about how your mouth would smell if you didn't brush your teeth for a few days, much less a few years.
Brushing twice a day would be ideal, but twice a week is sufficient.

START 'EM YOUNG: Brushing your cats teeth may sound like a scene in a horror flick, but if you begin when kitty is just a few months old, the experience can quickly become a pleasant one.

HOW TO BRUSH: Begin by gently handling and stroking your cats mouth for a few minutes a day. After a few days, lift up her lip on one side and with a piece of gauze on your finger, begin brushing in a circular motion on the outer surface of a few teeth. Do this each day by adding more teeth and eventually you will be able to use a miniature brush available in pet stores..be sure it is soft bristled and designed only for pets.

TICKLE THEIR TASTE BUDS: Some pet toothpastes come in flavors like poultry, beef or malt to make the experience more palatable for your pet. DO NOT USE HUMAN TOOTHPASTE THAT FOAMS! Pets cannot spit, and if they swallow the foam, it gives them upset stomachs.

REACH FOR A SPRAY: If your cat doesn't take kindly to having his teeth brushed, reach for a spray. Many pet stores sell mouth sprays for pets which do the same as minty sprays humans use. They are purely cosmetic.

CAN THE CANNED FOOD: Switching to a dry kibble may help to improve mouth odor, because it scrapes the surface of the teeth.

RICE TO THE OCCASION: Whole grains, like cooked brown rice, can help food move along the digestive tract more readily. Better digestion plays a role in better breath. We recommend adding a small portion of rice to your pets regular diet on a daily basis.

SCRAP THE SCRAPS: Breath often reflects the diet, if you're feeding your cat things like leftover spaghetti flavored with garlic, you have found the source of the stinky breath.

GO FOR GREEN: Chlorophyll tablets, available in pet stores, can aid digestion and sweeten your cats breath.

TOMORROW: BEGGING!!!

HELP THE KIDS UNDERSTAND: Like people, many elderly pets get a bit cranky and intolerant of interruption. While your senior kitty will probably slink away from any hubbub in the house, you may need to ask the kids to be especially considerate of the elderly dog. A lot of times children don't recognize the early signs of grumpiness and will get bitten.

SLIP HER A SUPPLIMENT: In lieu of snacks, many vets 'reward' their patients with a pet vitamin. They are not high in calories, and they have ingredients that make them flavorable to pets. Pet stores carry a variety of chewable pet vitamins.

SLIP THEM SOME ANTIOXIDANTS: In humans, studies have shown that daily doses of the antioxidant vitamins C & E can help protect against heart disease. Cats can take 500 milligrams a day of vitamin C and 50 units of Vitamin E. Check with your Vet for precise dosing instructions. For cats, try mixing the vitamins with a little canola or olive oil and smearing the mixture on her paws, your cat will just lick it off.

KELSEES KAT REMEDIES
Good afternoon..mom is still feeling crappy, but she knows I need to do this. Today's topic: THE AGING FELINE! Suggested by my Angel sis, A Shadow!

It seems like only yesterday your cat was a cuddly ball of fur endlessly romping around and playing. Most cats live on average 15-16 years, but there are plenty of 20+ year old felines out there. Many kitties stay healthy as Seniors, but many succumb to illness.

BEGIN WITH REGULAR VET VISITS: Once your cat enters her middle years, it's a good idea to take her to the Vet at least once a year. When you take kitty to the Vet for her first "Senior" checkup, your vet may recommend that she have a comprehensive exam that tells how she will feel as she ages.

KEEP THOSE PAWS MOVING: Daily exercise will help keep your kitty slim and flexible, helping stave off age-related disorders like arthritis or digestive problems.

WATCH HIS WEIGHT: The #1 problem in the pet population is obesity. How to tell if kitty is overweight: They should stay fairly sleek throughout their lives. If you can't feel his ribs or see his waist, he is more then likely overweight.

SWITCH TO HEALTHY TREATS: Giving your pets little snacks seems to be part of the 'animal/human' bond. But if your cat is elderly or overweight you could be killing her with kindness. Carrot sticks are a healthy treat, although you might have a hard time convincing your cat that a carrot is just as tasty as a liver treat.

KEEP THE WATER BOWL FULL: Many cats naturally drink less as they age, which can cause dehydration. try keeping water bowls in every room, this is important, especially if your kitty isn't getting around as easily as he used to.

KEEP HER CLOSE: As they age, many animals begin losing their hearing, making them vulnerable to accidents. Keep an older animal outside on a leash..you will need to become their ears and take more precautions on their behalf.

CHANGE DIETS CAREFULLY: Cats don't like changes in their daily routine, and changing to a new food cause them to sulk and leave the table for a few days. There is m ore at stake then being hungry, since cats that don't eat can develop a serious, possibly fatal condition called Hepatic Lipidosis. You need to change your cats diets slowly. At first, give her no more than 1/4 of the new food added to her old food, ..add a little more each day over a 2-week period of time, or perhaps longer.

KEEP KITTY WARM & COMFY: It is important to keep elderly cats warm and comfy. Give them an old blanket to cuddle in or make their bed close to the heat source or try purchasing a heated kitty bed, available at Pet Stores.

PART 2--next blog!

Keep those suggestions coming in. TOMORROW: STINKY BREATH

Today we are doing WORMS..suggested by MOJO!!! I will get to TAPEWORMS and ROUND WORMS at a later date....

WORMS!!! {Yuck}

WORM WHEN YOUNG: Almost every young animal will be born with worms or will pick them up from nursing their mother...Vets advise worming puppies and kittens as young as 6 weeks. You can pick up the medication at your Veterinarian's Office or a pet store.

CALM TUMMIES WITH KAOPECTATE: This over-the-counter medication is a safe, effective way to reduce diarrhea and calm your pets insides. Kaopectate is safe for cats and dogs, and it adds some solidity to the stool....to give the medication, draw some up in a syringe or a turkey baster. Tip your pets head back and squirt the medicine in the mouth toward the back of the tongue, hold his mouth closed and stroke his throat until, he swallows. A rule of thumb is to give 1 tsp of Kaopectate for each 10 pounds of weight twice a day.

STOP THE STALKING: Another way cats get worms is from eating mice, rabbits or other rodents. To reduce this risk, keep your cats indoors or on a leash in your yard.

KEEP YOUR YARD CLEAN: A variety of intestinal papasites thrive in soil thats contaminated with wastes from dogs and cats. In addition, pets can get an intestinal infection called giardiasis from drinking dirty water.

TAKE PRECAUTIONS: Some of the same medications that vets recommend for preventing heartworm, will help reduce certain intestinal worms.

WATCH THE CULPRITS: While it's extremely common for pets to get worms, catching them early makes the problem much easier to treat.

Check your pets bottom and stools at least 2-3 times a week if you suspect worms...look for rice-shaped tapeworm segments or the longer spaghetti like roundworms..In addition you should have your Vet check your pets stools once a year.

Kelsee's Remedies: 11/5 --
Good morning..getting an early start today. One of mom's Niece's is in the hospital and she is leaving for the day...not sure when we she will be back..she got invited to stay for supper.

Today we are discussing the troublesome problem that face all us kitties: HAIRBALLS. Today's suggestion came from DEAN.

PASS IT WITH PETROLEUM: When your cat starts hacking, try giving her 1/4 tsp of petroleum jelly. This will help ease the hairball through the digestive tract rather then onto your carpet. If your cat doesn't like the taste of it, you can take advantage of his fastidious nature and put it on a front paw or under his nose. Being a cat, she will be inclined to clean it off.

TRY A TASTY ALTERNATIVE: Some hairball lubricants are downright delicious to cats. Pet stores sell several delectable kinds, like Laxatone and Petromalt.

BUTTER KITTY UP: One of the most effective hairball remedies is butter, and cats love it. Besides being a natural lubricant, butter makes the gall bladder contract and empty bile, a mild laxative, into the digestive tract. This helps speed hairballs out of a cats' system before they cause trouble. Give 1/2 to 1 tsp of butter once a day for a week. You don't want to use butter too often, though, because your cat could go from having hairballs to being a butterball.

FIX IT WITH FIBER: Sometimes a high fiber pet food is all it takes to accelerate the passage of a hairball. When shopping for a high fiber food, look for one containing 3.5 - 10% fiber..fiber content is listed on cat food labels.

FOIL THE FLEAS: If your cat is infested, she could be grooming herself more then usual and consequently swallowing more hair. If you have a tried-and-true flea busting method, use it and your cats hairball problem should improve.

COIF YOUR CAT: Combing and brushing your cats fur everyday can do wonders for hairball prevention. Cats shed hundreds of hairs a day, especially in Spring and Summer. If you brush these hairs away you cat won't be swallowing as many.

WIPE HIM DOWN: After grooming kitty, use a damp washcloth to remove any loose hairs the brush may have missed.

TAKE HIS MIND OFF HIS FUR: Some cats have personalties that make them compulsive lickers--they just can't get enough of grooming themselves. Over-grooming can also be a response to stress. Give your cat a much needed distraction..try playing with her more so she has something else to put her energy into.

Tomorrow: Constant meowing. Keep those suggestions coming in.

Today we are discussing EXCESSIVE GROOMING: {Psychogenic Alopecia} today's suggestion is from: SPANKY JACK

CAUSES: It is important to differentiate what causes over-grooming, it could be stress related or pain related. Take kitty to the VET 1st if you suspect over grooming to find the cause before you treat it.

If there is a painful area, the licking will be focused there. For example, back pain or anal sac impactation will prompt the cat to lick just that particular area.

Where a cat focuses her licking can give clues to the root of the problem, which could be any number of things--fleas, a neurologic problem, a chiropractic problem, parasites, food allergies, or a reaction to dust, pollen, or mold.

Conditions that are NOT skin related but can cause over grooming can include cystitis, hyper-thyroidism, and anal sac problems.

SPOTTING THIS BEHAVIOR: Cats spend about 30-40% of their days grooming themselves, and much of the remaining time is spent napping. So it is common for cat owners to have no clue there is a problem until they notice significant hair loss, bald spots or scabs from over grooming.

HEPING A CAT WITH PSYCHOGENIC ALOPECIA: When all medical causes have been ruled out or resolved and you've narrowed the problem to an issue of obsessive behavioral licking, treatment should be focused on stress reduction.

EATING HABITS: Cats like to eat at the same time everyday, so make feeding time very consistent. Keep food bowls in the same location, and of course, keep them clean.

LITTERBOXES: Keep litter boxes in the exact location and keep them clean using mild soap and hot water and a disinfectant.

INTERACTING WITH PEOPLE: Most cats enjoy interacting with people, so take time every day to make sure your cat's emotional needs are being met. You can involve physical activity with interactive toys such as a laser pointer. {We love this toy}. Brushing your kitty is beneficial. MOST cats love to be brushed an d find it enjoyable.

HIGH UP PLACES: Provide kitty with hide boxes, access to high perches, like wall shelving, and keep scratching posts in kitty's play room. You can also consider window perches to help provide entertainment.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: You need to be patient, as excessive grooming problems usually take some time to resolve. But with consistent attention, affection, and routine, most kitties do get their over grooming under control. They re-grow their hair, and their quality of life improves within a few months.

TOMORROW: Cat flu{it's getting cold in some areas} Keep these suggestions coming in.

Kelsee's Remedies: 11/6
Good afternoon. Today we are discussing excessive meowing or caterwauling. Today's suggestion by: LEGEND & CASER}

SHOW 'EM THE DOOR: Some cats, like people, can never make up their minds. When they are inside, they want outside, and when they out, they want in. Put in a kitty door. Pet stores stock these by the dozen's ranging from $25. They are simple to install yourself in most cases.

FEED HER REGULARLY: Rather than feeding your cat only when she cries for food, try feeding her at the same time each day. Once she understands her feeding schedule, she will be less inclined to give you reminders. {we eat at 5:30pm daily and let mom know when she is late}

EXTEND DINNER HOUR: If you trust kitty not to over-indulge, try keeping his food bowl full of dry kibble. If he starts putting on the pounds, however, you may have to try a different strategy.

GIVE OUT EXTRA STROKES: Frequent meowing is often a gambit for more attention. Spending a little more quality time with your kitty--petting him or even playing with him or going for walks, will more then likely keep him quiet.

DRAW THE LINE: While most cats will cool the chatter once they get what they are asking for, others are rarely quiet. Whatever you do, do not encourage the chatter. Even if you hold out as long as you can but then respond, what he's learned is that the longer her meows, the more likely it is he will get your attention. Be strong and ignore him.

REWARD GOOD BEHAVIOR: Just as it is important to ignore her when she is talking, you will want to praise her when she is quiet. Try giving a treat when she is quiet or say "Good kitty" and give extra pets.
It is important to wait until she is quiet before giving treats.

TAKE TOUGH ACTION: The next time your chatty kitty goes into his meow cycle, try giving him a blast from a squirt bottle. They will soon realize it is no fun to meow if each time they open their mouth they get squirted.

HELP HER RELAX: Constant meowing in cats could be a sign of boredom or stress. Try introducing her to new toys, preferably the kind that will challenge her mind. A Cat track with an enclosed ball is always a good choice. You want to make her life more interesting.

WHEN TO SEE YOUR VET: While most meowing is a cry for attention, in some cases it means your cat is sick or in pain and needs to see his Vet.

Note what kitty is doing when he cries and that can provide valuable information for the Vet. EXAMPLE: if he is meowing by the litterbox, it could mean kitty is constipated or having trouble urinating. Listen for different tones in your cats meow..it could mean upper respiratory or lung problems or signs of illness.

TOMORROW: EXCESSIVE GROOMING!

TODAY we are talking about DIABETES in Cats...today's topic bought to you by MIKE.

DIABETES IN KATS:

KEEP THEM TRIM: Being overweight can make diabetes much more difficult to control..we see these 16-pound cats that are producing insulin, but not enough.
To keep kitty trim and at a healthy weight the Vet recommends measuring her/his food to make sure you are not over feeding. You should hold back on the table scraps, which can pile on the pounds. {but we love them so}

SWITCH TO A HIGH-FIBER DIET: Giving kitty high-fiber foods can help stabilize the rate at which fuels enter the cells, keeping keeping blood sugar levels more constant.

KEEP THOSE PAWS MOVING: Exercise is important because it helps control weight. In addition, the more your kitty exercises, the less insulin her/his body requires.

GIVE MEDICINE REGULARLY: Perhaps the most important aspect of treating diabetes is to prevent blood sugar levels from swinging widly from high to low. That is why VETS recommend giving your pet medication at the same time each day.

REWARDS FOR GOOD BEHAVIOR: NO body enjoys getting shots, your pets included. To make the experience as comfortable as possible, be extremely loving, gentle and patient. After the shot reward kitty with plenty of LOVE and perhaps a small treat.

KEEP A SWEET HANDY: Giving kitty insulin will sometimes cause blood sugar to plunge too low, a condition called HYPOGLYCEMIA, so be sure to always have on hand a source of sugar if you have a diabetic pet...some vets recommend a small finger of honey or Karo syrup.

IF your pet experiences HYPOGLYCEMIA please take to the Vet ASAP.

Remember to keep the ailments coming in...tomorrow we will cover Feline acne.

Good afternoon! Today's topic is CLAW PROBLEMS. Suggested by A MALACHI

TRIM THEM OFTEN: To prevent claws from getting too long and causing problems, they should be trimmed every 6-8 weeks. If your pet doesn't go outside{and on a sidewalk} more clipping may be necessary.

HOW TO TRIM FOR CATS: Press gently on cats paw to force the nails out with your thumb on top and hand holding the paw.
ONLY remove the sharp tip of the nail. DO NOT cut into the quick.

START THEM YOUNG: You should teach a kitten{or puppy} early on to sit still to have her nails trimmed. DO NOT lunge at her, however. To help your pet get used to the idea of pedicures, spend some time touching her paws before you start clipping. Once she is used to having her paws handled, she'll be less likely to rebel when you bring out the clippers.

TREAT THEM LIKE JEWELS: If your pet won't sit still for the clippers, maybe he will do better if you use a jewelers file. Just file and take off a short bit at a time. Jeweler's files can be purchased at Hardware stores.

WORK IN SHIFTS: When your pet is nervous, many vets recommend just clipping 1 paw per day. You do not need to do the all 4 paws at once. There is nothing wrong with stealth, cunning and patience.

REACH FOR THE SHAVING KIT: Many nail injuries occur when owners cut to close to the 'quick'. To staunch the bleeding, run the cut claw with a stypic pencil or a coagulant powder.
Another way to stop bleeding is to dip your pets paw in flour.

PROTECT WITH A CLEANING: If your cat has recently torn or cracked a nail and it is bleeding or in pain, you will want to clean the nail well to prevent infection from setting in. Wash the area well with soap and warm water, then gently towel dry and apply a small dab of antibacterial ointment.
If the bleeding does not stop, seek Veterinary assistance immediately.

Good afternoon. Today we are discussing TAPEWORMS. Nobody suggested it, so I just decided to do it. Had to go online and research this.

WHAT ARE TAPEWORMS: Tapeworms are the most common internal parasite in adult cats. They live in the small intestines, and vary in length from less than 1" to several feet. The scolex {head} of the parasite fastens itself to the wall of the gut using hooks and suckers. The body is composed of segments that contain egg packets. To eliminate tapeworm infection, the head must be destroyed. Otherwise the worm will regenerate.

The body segments containing the eggs are passed in the feces. These are called proglottids. Fresh moist segments are capable of moving. They are about . long. Occasionally, you might see them in the fur around your cat's anus or in her stool. When dry, they resemble grains of rice.

TAPEWORM SPECIES: There are 2 common species found in cats; both are transmitted by an intermediate host. DIPYLIDIUM CANINUM is acquired from fleas or lice that harbor immature tapeworms in their intestines. These insects acquire the parasite by eating tapeworm eggs. The cat MUST bite or swallow the insect to become infested. The tapeworm TAENIA TEANIAFORMIS is acquired by eating rodents, uncooked meats, raw freshwater fish, or discarded animal parts.

TREATMENT: Praziquantal is one of the most effective medications for both common specials. Other suitable treatments are Fenbendazole and Espiprantal. Use only under Veternary guidance. Deworming must be combined with control of fleas and lice, in the case of DIPYLIDIUM CANINUM, and by preventing roaming and hunting in the case of other tapeworms.

TOMORROW: CLAW PROBLEMS. Keep them suggestions coming in.

Hi kitties. Today my topic is on DANDRUFF. Suggested by: LUKE & CASER

TAKE THE PLUNGE: Since dandruff is a sign of flaky skin, giving your cat regular baths will help wash the flakes away before the accumulate. To bathe your pet, use warm{NOT hot} water. Use a mild shampoo like baby shampoo and massage it well into your pets skin. Rinse thoroughly and dry him well.

FOR CATS: The BIG struggle isn't getting rid of the dandruff, it's getting them into the bath in the 1st place..{How true} For tips on bathing kitties.....OK..this will be part 2 today!

GO FOR MORE POWER: If baby shampoo doesn't help, try using a pet dandruff shampoo that contains sulfur or salicylic acid. Leave the later in place for about 5 minutes to the give the active ingredients time to work. You can buy medicated pet shampoos at most Pet store retailers. DO NOT use medicated shampoos intended for humans because they can be harmful for pets.

ADD OATMEAL TO BATH: The same colloidal oatmeal{Aveeno} that people use for dry skin can also relieve flaking skin in pets. Aveeno is marvelous for pets with dandruff because it moisturizes dry skin.

GIVE HIM A SPRITZ: If you live in a dry climate, spraying your cat's coat with an oil rinse will help lubricate the skin and lock in moisture. This is available in most pet stores.

GIVE KITTY THE BRUSH OFF: Grooming your cat regularly helps distribute natural oils evenly over dry skin, which will help keep dandruff down. Choose a brush that is not too harsh.

CHECK THE OIL: Sometimes we'
ll see dandruff when animals aren't getting enough fat in their diets. Giving your kitty fish-oil supplements will help improve metabolism of fats in skin tissue. Try mixing 1/2- 1 tsp of fish oil into your cats food daily. You can also use sunflower oil.

UPGRADE HER DIET: Some generic pet foods do not provide the full range of vitamins and minerals your pet needs to maintain healthy skin.

PART 2-HOW TO GIVE KITTY A BATH is only posted on the CMR. {Thanks}

TOMORROW: TAPEWORM. Keep the suggestions coming in.

KELSEES KAT REMEDIES
Today we are talking about CAT FLU..yes, it is that time of year. We can get sick, too!!

FIGHT IT WITH FOOD: While a sick cat is rarely a hungry cat, it's still important to encourage her to eat. A Good diet will help keep her immune system strong, making her better able to fight off infection. To stimulate her appetite, try giving her a warm meal..add warm water to kibble to make a gravy or just pop her food in the microwave for a few seconds.

ORDER SOMETHING ODORIFEROUS: Since your cat probably has a stuffed-up nose, you can tempt her taste buds by giving her something with BIG flavor--and smell. Canned tuna is always good. You can place some on a plate or mix it with her regular food.

Cats also like high-protein foods like cottage cheese{Yummy}, cheese, scrambled eggs and chicken. Pop a skinless boneless chicken breast in the microwave and then cut it up real fine. Most cats will eat something like that.

LEND A HAND: If your finicky feline just sniffs your offerings and walks away, try dabbing a little food on her nose or paw.

GIVE HIM A HANKIE:Cats with flu often get an uncomfortable buildup of mucus around the eyes and nose. To help your kitty breathe better and feel more comfortable, keep the eyes and nose clean is important. Dampen a soft washcloth or a cotton ball with warm water and gently swab away the secretions. You can also use pre-moistened baby towelettes which contain soothing ingredients like lanolin and also vera.

SOOTHE WITH SALINE: If your cat is having difficulty breathing, giving him saline nose drops will thin the sticky mucus and help clear his nose.

HOW TO ADMINISTER: With the dropper in one hand, tip kitty's head back with your other. Place one or two drops in each nostril, then keep her head elevated for a minute to give them time to work. You can repeat this twice a day.

GIVE EYE RELIEF: You can also use saline drops to help relieve sore, weepy eyes.{if you use the same dropper, wash with warm water between uses} Just put a drop or 2 in each eye, repeat 3-5 times a day. Or you can use over-the-counter eyedrops containing boric acid.

HELP WITH HUMIDITY: Putting extra moisture into the air with a humidifier will help ease congestion and improve breathing.
Another alternative is to take your cat into the bathroom when you bathe or shower.

TAKE PROTECTIVE MEASURES: Vets often recommend a vaccine that's very effective at preventing cat flu. While it doesn't work 100% of the time, it will dramatically improve your cats chances for staying healthy.

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: Cat flu is generally no more serious among the feline crowd then the common cold is for humans...if your kitty has a temperature over 101* for more then 24 hours, see the Vet, as it can lead to pneumonia, anemia or dehydration.

TOMORROW: Diarrhea. KEEP those suggestions coming in.

VARRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMM
The sound of 11 shiny Harley's can be heard thundering down the road with the tune "Born To Be Wild" coming out of Kali's speakers.

They stop at ANGEL TUXIE'S house and Thundie, Lola, Zoe Monique, Mallow, Cyndee, Ammie, Talley, Elvis, Coco & Malachi all climb off their bikes and Thundie rings the bell..

Kali hands ANGEL TUXIE a gift basket from all the Rainbow Riders that includes a memorial plaque with her crossing date on it, some fresh cut flowers and some home baked catnip cuppycakes....

The Riders all give Angel Tuxie a big hug and tell her she is still in her daddy's heart and that all her friends still miss her very much..you are never forgotten.

We remember your daddy today as well as he remembers you, we are keeping him in our purrayers.

The Riders climb back on their bikes and drive off down the highway ..."Born to Be Wild" can be heard as they drive off.

Honorary Riders, Angels Yum Yum & Doodlebug fly along the back of the Riders to keep them safe as they travel along
