About Me

Active within 1470 Days

Hi! My name is Trixie~ off line ~~

I am Domestic Shorthair from Tampa, FL

Nicknames: Baby girl, sweetness, toe-nibbler, lover of life, my kid, my calli of many colors.

Age: 12 years old

Gender: F

Coat: short haired

Education: I am proud of everything Trixie does. She is a wonderful, loving baby gal. I cannot imagine life without my Trixie.

My favorite tricks and treats are: Trixie loves to run. She climbs the tree inside the enclosed back yard we have. Its her garden and she KNOWS it! She stands on her back legs trying to get me to give her her food faster. She's a talker too, she gabs all the time. We girl-talk all the time!! She is a real lover. She has us do all the tricks. She trained us to her liking ! She is NOT allowed outside the house, only the enclosed backyard area. and Nutro gourmet classics, lamb, roasted chicken, hunters stew with duck, pounce. Loves that catnip plant too. When she gets too much fresh out!! She does a break dance, pure entertainment for Mom and Dad. Who needs Tv with a kitty like Trixie who does live entertainment !

Where I hang out: Mom's bed, the flowerbed, the porch, Dad's garage & shed with him,she helps him with all his work out there, she's a Daddys girl too! The whole house and enclosed screened in back yard are all Trixies, we are just the STAFF !

My favorite grubs: Iams dry, Nutro Max chicken dry, pouch wets, homemade chicken too. Loves to lick butter too.

My pet peeves: When shes's outside with me she is afraid of loud cars & planes noises. Inside, she abhors the vacuum cleaner. She doesnt like guests too often. Just Mom and Dad and maybe brother Bob.

What I love about my owners: She always makes sure dinner is on time.My petting and attention is always there for the taking. Mom holds me like a baby and sings the Trixie song to me. She recites how she used to go out to feed me in the big parking lot! She loves me. She adores me. We have a very special BOND!

My cat hobbies: Gab with Mom, cuddle up with Mom, eat, watch TV, stare out the window. Sunbathe by the back window. A girl has to keep her safe tan going! She loves classical music and some jazz as well.

Pet motto: "Girls just want to have fun as well as Love and security too"!!

Vote Smoke's Angels * #226582 * 5/25/12 *
From Duckies’ Desk: Have you met Smoke’s Angels, # 226582? Smoke’s Angels is a page dedicated to the loving memory of a group of Kitties that have touched the lives of a loving and caring family for many, many years. All Of these kitties are angels now and all but one of them found this loving family. Although this touching story did not start with Smoke he knew all the kitty's that will eventually be on this page. He reigned supreme in the family’s house for 18 years. Most of these Angels have crossed the bridge In the last 10 years and it has been very difficult to say goodbye to so many babies in such a short time. All now reside in the family’s Kitty Cemetery. Although this page is dedicated to the memory of several Angels it is named in memory of Smoke. Smoke came to his forever family in 1989, missing an eye and had a terrible ripped leg, they think a large bird had gotten hold of him but somehow he got away. Smoke bonded with his family instantly and found a deep love that would span 18 years. Smoke’s family miss him dearly and Smoke still loves his special family very much. This Angel would love to send his family a special gift on Saturday, May 26th, a gift of his Cat of the Day Badge. On Friday, May 25th, please go to page #226582 and vote for this very deserving Angel so he can earn his Cat of the Day Badge and send his loving family this special gift!

Surprise ACOTD for ANGEL JAKE #142474 ~
From Duckie’s Desk: ANGEL JAKE #142474 is a very quiet angel on CC these days but is remembered as the sweetest cat in the world by his loving family. He was the icing on the cake of life for them when they saw his handsome face in the pet store, and they happily added him to their multi-cat household without a second thought. JAKE #142474 became ill near the end of 2009 and received his first COTD badge on 12/26/09, thanks to the outpouring of love for him as he celebrated his birthday the day before. He was scheduled for surgery the following day to find out why he was so sick, so while the family waited and hoped, all of CC prayed for him and his family. Apparently the angels needed a special boy like SWEET JAKE #142474 to join their ranks though because the diagnoses came back as terminal lymphatic cancer. His family and friends were devastated by the news and knowing they couldn’t let him suffer any longer, the family made the very difficult decision to help him cross the Rainbow Bridge on 12/29/09. ANGEL JAKE #142474 is now spreading his benevolence down on all of us and we’d like to honor him Saturday by helping him get an ACOTD badge to adorn his cloud so he knows he’s not forgotten just because he became an angel. Please stop by to visit ANGEL JAKE #142474 on Friday April 27th, and while you’re there please pounce on his vote button so that we can watch him skipping across the stars in heavenly joy Saturday night with a new golden badge proudly sparkling as brightly as his halo.

From Duckies’ Desk: ~Have you met ANGEL ANGEL #133708? She is a kitty without a badge on her page so we’d like to surprise her with a special campaign Friday & need your help to complete this secret mission! This sweet kitty was trying to find a safe place in a neighborhood with her 3 kittens but was having problems with people chasing her away. Her soon-to-be furever mom saw this & started putting food by her garage every day to show her that not all people were unfriendly to cats. ANGEL #133708 got so used to the idea that she went inside the garage & discovered that loving humans did exist & she’d found the purrfect one. She was taken to the vet for shots & spaying so she knew in her little kitty heart that this home was hers to call her own. ANGEL #133708 joined CC in April 2009 & was called to the heavens at the end of November 2011. She’s still missed by her sweet mom, her adopted older sibling Giovanni, as well as doggie sibs Aussie & Rowdy from DC. Please help us honor this beautiful angel by pawing a vote her way on Friday April 20 so she’ll know she’s not forgotten by her CC family & friends.

From Duckies’ Desk: Have you met Angels Buster and Louie, #210737? Once or maybe twice in someone's lifetime a cat will come along who not only steals your heart but holds onto it forever. This was the case of Buster and Louie and describes the bond that these two lucky kitties had with their forever family. Louie was found half crawling in the middle of the street. His eyes were so infected they were swollen shut, and his nose was so blocked he had to struggle to breathe. He was given antibiotics for his respiratory infection and antibiotic drops in his eyes. He slowly got better but his eyes were so infected his family was afraid he might lose his sight. He was lucky, though. His eyes got better but his left eye was always a little weepy.
Buster’s mama was abandoned in the neighborhood while she was pregnant, and had her kittens under a neighbor's house. She moved the babies to their forever family’s yard and behind the barn of another neighbor. Buster’s future family had already begun to feed his momma and she was starting to trust them. Buster had found his home!
Louie crossed the Rainbow Bridge on April 28, 2011, and Buster crossed on March 16, 2011. Angels Buster and Louie would love to send their family a special gift on Saturday, April 14th. This gift would be the gift of their Cat of The Day Badge. Please stop by these deserving Angels’ page, #210737 and cast a vote for Angel Buster and Louie on Friday, April 13th, 2012 so they can send their family this special gift!

We wanted to do a special Easter campaign for a deserving kitty, as this is such a special holiday to so many of us, including our candidate. Felicity has been part of our CC family for nearly four years and has been a supportive and caring kitty to anyone who needs a bit of comfort or an extra purr! Felicity has been very helpful to us on our Birthday Central page, and even thought she is a retired reporter, she still continues to let us know when someone is having a birthday or adoptiversary. As many of you know, Felicity and her pawrents lost their dear Angel Baby last November, but at this time of year, more than any other, we know that our loved ones are never truly gone, but have only moved on to another destination in the journey. We, too, will all make that journey one day to be reunited with those who have gone before us.

Please stop by to leave Felicity #92039 a vote on Saturday, April 7th, so she can be our Easter COTD. We know it will mean so much to her and her pawrents!

Whether you celebrate Easter, Passover, or just the arrival of Springtime, we hope you take a moment to appreciate all the miracles around us and the hope that the season brings.

Happy Easter and Happy Passover!

From Duckie’s Desk: Have you met Angel Markus, #219297? Markus crossed the Beautiful Rainbow Bridge on November 14th, 2011. Since that time Angel Markus has taken a very active part in welcoming Kitties across the Rainbow Bridge and showing them the great love that he experienced in his lifetime. Markus was dropped off at an animal shelter and being a perfectly healthy kitty he was taken in by a loving family who fell in love with this beautiful young male cat. Markus was a very happy cat and he felt his forever families love every day. Markus was very playful and had a life filled with everything a kitty could ever want! Markus developed an intestine problem that would take his life at the age of 11 years. Angel Markus said goodbye to his family in November of 2011. Angel Markus would love to send his family a special gift on Saturday, April 7th. This gift would be the gift of his Cat of The Day Badge. Even if you aren’t Irish, when you celebrate your birthday on St. Patrick’s Day, you are Irish for the day! And that is exactly what our COTD candidate is doing today—celebrating her 6th birthday! Angel had a “rough start” (pardon the pun) in life when she was found inside an engine of someone’s car at only 10 weeks of age. She lives with her Mom and sisters (Queen) Callie and Smokey, She was especially fond of her sister and playmate, Sassy, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge in 2007. Angel loves high places and is quite talented in the jumping department! Please stop by page #92442 and leave a COTD vote and birthday wishes for this honorary Irish kitty today! We have reached day 26 of my campaign ...
Today I am posting this myself, BUT Mom’s computer will not be available to her until late on Thursday. Dear furriend Sassy and her mom have agreed to post my blog on the CMR page #46883 on Mon – Wed. On Thursday, I am being crowned in absentia, but will arrive later that day to visit and celebrate with you. Hang in there … I’ll be back.

Check each day at the bottom of my page for pics, even during my reign. This adventure is not ending; it’s only just begun. You’ll see.

Probably the most recognizable of the primates is the

Probably the most intelligent animal, next to man, the chimpanzee manifests many parallels to human behavior. Although its senses are similar to ours, it probably has a keener sense of smell. Other than man, the chimpanzee is one of the only animals that make and use tools. For example, it peels the bark from sticks and then uses those bare sticks to probe tree holds for insects. A chimpanzee uses far more facial and body gestures and a wider range of sounds than any animal other than man.

Usually in a slouch, rarely holding itself upright, a chimpanzee walks on its knuckles while moving about mainly on the ground, although it also climbs. A chimpanzee spends many hours of each day foraging for food, mainly ripe fruit and young leaves. It may eat as many as two dozen different types of plants in a single day.

A newborn chimpanzee is totally dependent on its mother. When a few days old it clings to the front of its mother’s body, by six months it rides on her back and by four years is walking alongside. It will then remain close to its mother for up to eight years. Chimpanzees live in communities ranging in size from about a dozen to over one hundred.

Like other arboreal monkeys, the chimpanzee is very noisy, issuing hoots and high-pitched screams at the slightest provocation.

See a picture of this animal at the bottom of my page. *** The next three animal pics will be on my page also. I think you are all smart enough to figure which is which.

Wow! It's already Campaign Day 25 ...
Yet another primate is the

The name orangutan means “man of the forest” in Malay. They can be found in the rain forest of northern Borneo.

This peaceful, gentle, long-haired primate lives in the rainy jungles of Borneo and Sumatra. Clumsy when moving on the ground, it spends most of its time high up in the trees. At night it sleeps on little platforms which it builds from twigs and branches, constructing a new one each night. In wet or cold weather the orangutan covers itself with leaves. A voracious eater, it will sometimes spend an entire day feasting upon the fruit of a single tree. Fruit makes up more than half of its diet but it will also eat bark, leaves, eggs and young birds.

The most arboreal of all the apes, the orangutan has especially long, flexible fingers that help it to hang and swing in the trees. The orangutan has wonderful ability to use its facial muscles, particularly its big lips.

Long arms, hook-shaped hands and feet, and a heavy body enable an orangutan to swing superbly from tree to tree and walk on the branches. A very young orangutan rides about clinging to its mother’s chest but juveniles often play and romp together. Adults are quite solitary and, other than during infrequent mating encounters, an orangutan maintains and protects its own independent home range. Even when several adults are eating at the same food source there is little interaction among them. An adult male is particularly jealous of his territory and, when encroachment does occur, will become quite aggressive and noisy, shaking branches and emitting long, loud howls.

See a picture of this animal at the bottom of my page.

We've reached day 24 of my campaign ...
We’re staying big. Here is the

Indian Rhinoceros
Rhinoceros unicornia

The Indian rhinoceros lives primarily in northern India and Nepal. These massive beasts have some noticeable physical differences from their African relatives. Their segmented hide looks like a formidable coat of natural body armor. It functions a bit like one also: Flexible skin between the thicker hide "plates" allows them to shift as the rhinoceros moves.

As their Latin name Rhinoceros unicornis suggests, Indian rhinos have only one horn.

Like other rhinos, these animals have sharp hearing and a keen sense of smell. They may find one another by following the trail of scent each enormous animal leaves behind it on the landscape. An Indian rhino can move very quickly when aroused. Their charges have been clocked at 30 miles (48 kilometers) an hour. Despite their bulk, they are nimble and can jump or change direction quickly.

The Indian rhino is a grazer that travels established, tunnel-like paths through its tall-grass habitat. It grasps tall grasses with its prehensile (gripping) lip. In addition to grass, rhinos eat fruit, leaves, and sometimes farm crops. They are often around water and sometimes consume aquatic plants. These animals forage in the cooler temps of morning and afternoon to avoid exerting themselves in the debilitating midday heat. When the sun is high, they often wallow or submerge themselves in water.

The prominent horn for which these rhinos are so well known has also been their downfall. Many animals have been killed for this hard, hair-like growth, which is revered for medicinal use in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. The horn is also valued in North Africa and the Middle East as an ornamental dagger handle. There are only about 2,000 Indian rhinos left in the wild.

See a picture of this animal at the bottom of my page.

We have reached day 22 of my campaign ...
By popular request, today we will learn about

These gregarious animals are often seen in groups, and several families may live together in a large community. Squirrel-sized meerkats are mongooses famed for their upright posture. They often stand on their rear legs and gaze alertly over the southern African plains where they live. Mothers can even nurse their young while standing. All adult meerkats—male and female—pitch in to help educate the young in hunting and survival techniques.

Meerkats (also called suricates) work together in numbers. A few will typically serve as lookouts, watching the skies for birds of prey, such as hawks and eagles, that can snatch them from the ground. A sharp, shrill call is the signal for all to take cover. While a few individuals guard the group, the rest busy themselves foraging for the foods that make up their varied diet. Meerkats will eat insects, lizards, birds, and fruit. When hunting small game, they work together and communicate with purring sounds. Meerkats are good hunters and are sometimes tamed for use as rodent-catchers.

Meerkat groups utilize several different burrows and move from one to another. Each burrow is an extensive tunnel-and-room system that remains cool even under the broiling African sun. Females give birth to two to four young each year in one of the group's burrows. Fathers and siblings help to raise meerkat young, teaching them to play and forage and alerting them to the ever present danger from above. Young meerkats are so fearful of predatory birds that even airplanes will send them diving for cover.

See a picture of these cuties at the bottom of my page.

This is day 21 of my campaign ...
Emperor Penguins

Emperors are the largest of all penguins—an average bird stands some 45 inches (115 centimeters) tall. These flightless animals live on the Antarctic ice and in the frigid surrounding waters.

Penguins employ physiological adaptations and cooperative behaviors in order to deal with an incredibly harsh environment, where wind chills can reach -76°F (-60°C).

They huddle together to escape wind and conserve warmth. Individuals take turns moving to the group's protected and relatively toasty interior. Once a penguin has warmed a bit it will move to the perimeter of the group so that others can enjoy protection from the icy elements.

Emperor penguins spend the long winter on the open ice—and even breed during this harsh season. Females lay a single egg and then promptly leave it behind. They undertake an extended hunting trip that lasts some two months! Depending on the extent of the ice pack, females may need to travel some 50 miles (80 kilometers) just to reach the open ocean, where they will feed on fish, squid, and krill. At sea, emperor penguins can dive to 1,850 feet (565 meters)—deeper than any other bird—and stay under for more than 20 minutes.

Male emperors keep the newly laid eggs warm, but they do not sit on them, as many other birds do. Males stand and protect their eggs from the elements by balancing them on their feet and covering them with feathered skin known as a brood pouch. During this two-month bout of babysitting the males eat nothing and are at the mercy of the Antarctic elements.

When female penguins return to the breeding site, they bring a belly full of food that they regurgitate for the newly hatched chicks. Meanwhile, their duty done, male emperors take to the sea in search of food for themselves.

Mothers care for their young chicks and protect them with the warmth of their own brood pouches. Outside of this warm cocoon, a chick could die in just a few minutes. In December, Antarctic summer, the pack ice begins to break up and open water appears near the breeding site, just as young emperor penguins are ready to swim and fish on their own.

Check the bottom of my page to see a photo of these animals.

Today is Day 16 of my campaign ...
… and I’d like to introduce you to the …

Moose are the largest of all the deer species. Males are immediately recognizable by their huge antlers, which can spread 6 feet (1.8 meters) from end to end. Moose have long faces and muzzles that dangle over their chins. A flap of skin known as a bell sways beneath each moose's throat.

Moose are so tall that they prefer to browse higher grasses and shrubs because lowering their heads to ground level can be difficult. In winter they eat shrubs and pinecones, but they also scrape snow with their large hooves to clear areas for browsing on mosses and lichens. These hooves also act as snowshoes to support the heavy animals in soft snow and in muddy or marshy ground.

In summer, food is far more plentiful in the northern regions of North America, Europe, and Asia. When the ice melts, moose are often seen in lakes, rivers, or wetlands, feeding on aquatic plants both at and below the surface. Moose are at home in the water and, despite their staggering bulk, are good swimmers. They have been seen paddling several miles at a time, and will even submerge completely, staying under for 30 seconds or more.

Moose are similarly nimble on land. They can run up to 35 miles (56 kilometers) an hour over short distances, and trot steadily at 20 miles (32 kilometers) an hour.

Males, called bulls, bellow loudly to attract mates each September and October. The usually solitary bulls may come together at this time to battle with their antlers for mating supremacy. After mating, the two sexes go their separate ways until the following year. Though they may occasionally feed in the same grounds, they tend to ignore each other.

Females give birth to one or two calves in the spring—each weighing some 30 pounds (14 kilograms). These calves grow quickly and can outrun a person by the time they are just five days old. Young moose stay with their mothers until the following mating season.

We have a four-day weekend coming up … Presidents’ Day … and Mom will be doing child-care for the family, plus working. My blog will be posted on the CMR page #46883 with pictures of each animal placed on my home page each morning. I’ll pay you another visit on Tuesday.

For day 14, Valentine's Day ...
... read about two popular and lovable creatures, the Koala and the Giant Panda. Enjoy their stories and then see their pictures at the bottom of my page.

Though often called the koala "bear," this cuddly animal is not a bear at all; it is a marsupial, or pouched mammal. After giving birth, a female koala carries her baby in her pouch for about six months. When the infant emerges, it rides on its mother's back or clings to her belly, accompanying her everywhere until it is about a year old.

Koalas live in eastern Australia, where the eucalyptus trees they love are most plentiful. In fact, they rarely leave these trees, and their sharp claws and opposable digits easily keep them aloft. During the day they doze, tucked into forks or nooks in the trees, sleeping for up to 18 hours.

When not asleep a koala feeds on eucalyptus leaves, especially at night. Koalas do not drink much water and they get most of their moisture from these leaves. Each animal eats a tremendous amount for its size—about two and a half pounds (one kilogram) of leaves a day. Koalas even store snacks of leaves in pouches in their cheeks.

A special digestive system—a long gut—allows koalas to break down the tough eucalyptus leaves and remain unharmed by their poison. Koalas eat so many of these leaves that they take on a distinctive odor from their oil, reminiscent of cough drops.

These plump, fuzzy mammals were widely hunted during the 1920s and 1930s, and their populations plunged. Helped by reintroduction, they have reappeared over much of their former range, but their populations are smaller and scattered. Koalas need a lot of space—about a hundred trees per animal—a pressing problem as Australia's woodlands continue to shrink.

Second Valentine Animal ...
Giant Panda

The giant panda has an insatiable appetite for bamboo. A typical animal eats half the day—a full 12 out of every 24 hours. It takes 28 pounds (12.5 kilograms) of bamboo to satisfy a giant panda's daily dietary needs, and it hungrily plucks the stalks with elongated wrist bones that function rather like thumbs. Pandas will sometimes eat birds or rodents as well.

Wild pandas live only in remote, mountainous regions in central China. These high bamboo forests are cool and wet—just as pandas like it. They may climb as high as 13,000 feet (3,962 meters) to feed on higher slopes in the summer season.

Pandas are often seen eating in a relaxed sitting posture, with their hind legs stretched out before them. They may appear sedentary, but they are skilled tree-climbers and efficient swimmers.

Giant pandas are solitary. They have a highly developed sense of smell that males use to avoid each other and to find females for mating in the spring. After a five-month pregnancy, females give birth. The blind infants weigh only 5 ounces (142 grams) at birth and cannot crawl until they reach three months of age. They are born white, and develop their much loved coloring later.

There are only about 1,000 giant pandas left in the wild. Perhaps 100 pandas live in zoos, where they are always among the most popular attractions. Much of what we know about pandas comes from study of these zoo animals, because their wild cousins are so rare and elusive.

Day #13 of my campaign ...
Was your weekend filled with loved ones and lots of naps? Sure hope it was. Mom worked; that’s why my blogs on weekends are posted on the CMR page #46883 so head there each Saturday and Sunday. Gotta give the woman a break some time. It’s time to meet another amazing creature … here are

Przewalski’s Horses

Their dun-colored coat may help them blend quietly into the landscape, but their stand-out nature is as tempestuous as the winds of the Asian steppes. In the western world, they are known as Przewalski’s horses, Equus caballus przewalskii, but to the people of Mongolia, they are, and always have been, takh (TAH-kee), which means “spirited.” It is a fitting name for these strong, swift, and nimble animals – the last true wild horses on Earth.

In prehistoric times, these horses roamed widely over semi-arid, steppe grasslands and wooded areas in Western Europe, central Asia, and China. They were known to humans in these regions but never domesticated. In 1880, it was identified as a distinct equid species.

The Przewalski’s horse is an easily identified animal – it has the legs, torso, neck, and head we recognize as “horse,” but it differs from domesticated horses both on the inside and the outside. Przewalski’s horses have to forelock and a short, erect mane that is shed and regrown each year. Their head is large in proportion to their body, and while their neck is thicker than a domestic horse’s, their legs are relatively shorter. There is a genetic difference, too: Przewalski’s horses have 66 chromosomes in their DNA, but there are only 64 in domestic horses. It is a difference, but it’s such a slight one that interbreeding results in fertile offspring with 65 chromosomes. And while their behaviors are similar – social animals living in hierarchical herds – a major distinction between the two equids comes down to the meaning of one word: wild. Przwalski’s horses are extremely wary of humans.

See a photo of these beautiful creatures at the bottom of my page.

The stories for Saturday and Sunday will be posted on the CMR page #46883. Mom has to work this weekend. Pictures of the featured animals will be at the bottom of my page as usual. Be sure to take a look. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart for all your support and encouragement. You keep me going … or rather, you keep Mom’s fingers going.

Today we will go a little batty!
Rodrigues Fruit Bat
Pteropus rodricensis

These bats are found only on the island of Rodrigues in the Indian Ocean and are a critically endangered species. They have a wingspan of 2-1/2 feet and weigh about 1 pound.

Designed to be lightweight for slight, a bat’s hind legs can’t support it in an upright position – that’s why bats roost upside down, using hooked claws on each foot to grasp a branch.

Bats belong to the order Chiropter, which means “handwing” in Greek. Indeed, a bat’s wings are its hands, made up of four elongated digits between two layers of soft, velvety skin.

The finger bones of bats are very flexible, with cartilage that lacks calcium and other minerals nearer the tips so they can bed without splintering.

The surface of a bat’s wings is equipped with small, sensitive bumps called Merkel cells. Each bump has a tiny hair in the center, allowing the bat to collect information about the air flowing over its wings so it can change the wing’s shape to fly more efficiently.

Fruit bats have excellent senses of sight and smell, which they use to find ripe fruit to eat. Because their food doesn’t fly, they don’t use echolocation to hunt like insect-eating bats do.

Fruit bats use their clawed digits to grasp fruit and bite off pieces with their sharp teeth. They crush the fruit against their hard, ridged palate, swallow the juice, and then spit out the pulp and seeds.

Fruit bats are important to the health of forests. They spread pollen as they move from tree to tree eating flowers, nectar, and fruits, and they drop seeds that help replenish the forest with new plants.

Bats can’t land gracefully – instead, they tend to crash into bushes or trees to sop or latch onto a branch as they pass by. Sometimes these crash landings disturb other bats and cause noisy squabbles.

A picture of this animal is at the bottom of my page.

This is day 9 of my campaign ...
We’re scaling down the size of our birds for today … some of them were pretty big and scary. This lovely is familiar to many. Today’s featured animal is the

Hyancinth Macaw
Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus

Macaws are beautiful, brilliantly colored members of the parrot family.

Many macaws have vibrant plumage. The coloring is suited to life in Central and South American rain forests, with their green canopies and colorful fruits and flowers. The birds boast large, powerful beaks that easily crack nuts and seeds, while their dry, scaly tongues have a bone inside them that makes them an effective tool for tapping into fruits.

Macaws also have gripping toes that they use to latch onto branches and to grab, hold, and examine items. The birds sport graceful tails that are typically very long.

Macaws are intelligent, social birds that often gather in flocks of 10 to 30 individuals. Their loud calls, squawks, and screams echo through the forest canopy. Macaws vocalize to communicate within the flock, mark territory, and identify one another. Some species can even mimic human speech.

Flocks sleep in the trees at night, and in the morning they may fly long distances to feed on fruit, nuts, insects, and snails. Some species also eat damp soil, which may help to neutralize chemicals in their fruity diet and ease their stomachs.

Macaws typically mate for life. They not only breed with, but also share food with their mates and enjoy mutual grooming. In breeding season, mothers incubate eggs while fathers hunt and bring food back to the nest.

There are 17 species of macaws, and several are endangered. These playful birds are popular pets, and many are illegally trapped for that trade. The rain forest homes of many species are also disappearing at an alarming rate.

Hyacinth, red-fronted, and blue-throated macaws are seriously endangered.

A picture of this animal is posted at the bottom of my page. Each campaign photo will remain on my page for at least three days.

Still on the campaign trail ... Day 6 ...
Yesterday’s featured big cat, the Snow Leopard, proved quite popular and was well-received. Today we learn about yet another favorite “big kitty” …

The cheetah is the world's fastest land mammal. With acceleration that would leave most automobiles in the dust, a cheetah can go from 0 to 60 miles (96 kilometers) an hour in only three seconds. These big cats are quite nimble at high speed and can make quick and sudden turns in pursuit of prey.

Before unleashing their speed, cheetahs use exceptionally keen eyesight to scan their grassland environment for signs of prey—especially antelope and hares. This big cat is a daylight hunter that benefits from stealthy movement and a distinctive spotted coat that allows it to blend easily into high, dry grasses.

When the moment is right a cheetah will sprint after its quarry and attempt to knock it down. Such chases cost the hunter a tremendous amount of energy and are usually over in less than a minute. If successful, the cheetah will often drag its kill to a shady hiding place to protect it from opportunistic animals that sometimes steal a kill before the cheetah can eat. Cheetahs need only drink once every three to four days.

Female cheetahs typically have a litter of three cubs and live with them for one and a half to two years. Young cubs spend their first year learning from their mother and practicing hunting techniques with playful games. Male cheetahs live alone or in small groups, often with their littermates.

Most wild cheetahs are found in eastern and southwestern Africa. Perhaps only 7,000 to 10,000 of these big cats remain, and those are under pressure as the wide-open grasslands they favor are disappearing at the hands of human settlers.

The cheetah has been tamed for hunting for almost 5000 years.

A picture of this animal is posted at the bottom of my page. Each campaign photo will remain on my page for at least three days. If you somehow did not receive a report on one of these lovely creatures, you can find them on the CMR page #46883. You may need to search back a bit, but … happy hunting. =^..^=

Campaign day 5 ...
Snow Leopard

These rare, beautiful gray leopards live in the mountains of Central Asia. They are insulated by thick hair, and their wide, fur-covered feet act as natural snowshoes. Snow leopards have powerful legs and are tremendous leapers, able to jump as far as 50 feet (15 meters). They use their long tails for balance and as blankets to cover sensitive body parts against the severe mountain chill.

Snow leopards prey upon the blue sheep (bharal) of Tibet and the Himalaya, as well as the mountain ibex found over most of the rest of their range. Though these powerful predators can kill animals three times their weight, they also eat smaller fare, such as marmots, hares, and game birds.

One Indian snow leopard, protected and observed in a national park, is reported to have consumed five blue sheep, nine Tibetan woolly hares, twenty-five marmots, five domestic goats, one domestic sheep, and fifteen birds in a single year.

As these numbers indicate, snow leopards sometimes have a taste for domestic animals, which has led to killings of the big cats by herders.

These endangered cats appear to be in dramatic decline because of such killings, and due to poaching driven by illegal trades in pelts and in body parts used for traditional Chinese medicine. Vanishing habitat and the decline of the cats' large mammal prey are also contributing factors.

A photo of this animal is at the bottom of my page. Take a look.

Campaign day 4 ...
I've had a number of requests for this big cat. Enjoy.

Jaguars are the largest of South America's big cats. They once roamed from the southern tip of that continent north to the region surrounding the U.S.-Mexico border. Today significant numbers of jaguars are found only in remote regions of South and Central America—particularly in the Amazon basin.

These beautiful and powerful beasts were prominent in ancient Native American cultures. In some traditions the Jaguar God of the Night was the formidable lord of the underworld. The name jaguar is derived from the Native American word yaguar, which means "he who kills with one leap."

Unlike many other cats, jaguars do not avoid water; in fact, they are quite good swimmers. Rivers provide prey in the form of fish, turtles, or caimans—small, alligatorlike animals. Jaguars also eat larger animals such as deer, peccaries, capybaras, and tapirs. They sometimes climb trees to prepare an ambush, killing their prey with one powerful bite.

Most jaguars are tan or orange with distinctive black spots, dubbed "rosettes" because they are shaped like roses. Some jaguars are so dark they appear to be spotless, though their markings can be seen on closer inspection.

Jaguars live alone and define territories of many square miles by marking with their waste or clawing trees.

Females have litters of one to four cubs, which are blind and helpless at birth. The mother stays with them and defends them fiercely from any animal that may approach—even their own father. Young jaguars learn to hunt by living with their mothers for two years or more.

Jaguars are still hunted for their attractive fur. Ranchers also kill them because the cats sometimes prey upon their livestock.

Day 3 of my campaign ...
Today you can see two pictures of yours truly “flying” down the stairs … yes, that blur is me. Why do I do that, you ask. Well … think about it … they call that a “flight of stairs”. Duh.

And now …

Leopards are graceful and powerful big cats closely related to lions, tigers, and jaguars. They live in sub-Saharan Africa, northeast Africa, Central Asia, India, and China. However, many of their populations are endangered, especially outside of Africa.

The leopard is so strong and comfortable in trees that it often hauls its kills into the branches. By dragging the bodies of large animals aloft it hopes to keep them safe from scavengers such as hyenas. Leopards can also hunt from trees, where their spotted coats allow them to blend with the leaves until they spring with a deadly pounce. These nocturnal predators also stalk antelope, deer, and pigs by stealthy movements in the tall grass. When human settlements are present, leopards often attack dogs and, occasionally, people.

Leopards are strong swimmers and very much at home in the water, where they sometimes eat fish or crabs.

Female leopards can give birth at any time of the year. They usually have two grayish cubs with barely visible spots. The mother hides her cubs and moves them from one safe location to the next until they are old enough to begin playing and learning to hunt. Cubs live with their mothers for about two years—otherwise, leopards are solitary animals.

Most leopards are light colored with distinctive dark spots that are called rosettes, because they resemble the shape of a rose. Black leopards, which appear to be almost solid in color because their spots are hard to distinguish, are commonly called black panthers.

Pictures of these animals are posted at the bottom of my page. Each campaign photo will remain on my page for at least three days.

My campaign continues ...
Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his lair to "see" his shadow on Thursday, in the process predicting six more weeks of winter. It’s sunny here in Vista, CA, also, but I never saw the groundhog. However, I did see the:

The largest of all the cats, a shy, unsociable animal that remains deeply hidden in dense brush during the day, is also the most difficult to spot in it's natural habitat.

It has a massive, muscular body and powerful limbs. Its coat differs with its geographical habitat; the Bengal tiger is relatively short-haired and has strongly-marked stripes; the Siberian tiger has longer hair and fewer, paler stripes. In the shadows of a forest, its stripes help a tiger to disappear from view. Tigers are the only felid species with stripes – other big cats have spots, rosettes, or solid coats. All six living tiger subspecies are endangered due to habitat loss and relentless hunting for their body parts; three other subspecies are already extinct.

Tiger bones and other organs are used in folk medicine, despite international outcry and the lack of scientific endorsement. While human populations have increased; tigers have lost 93 percent of their historic range.

As opportunistic hunters of wild pigs and deer of various types, these solitary cats each require a significant home range to ensure they meet an estimated kill of 50 large prey animals per year. They can take smaller prey animals in a pinch, like primates and porcupines, and rise to the occasion of taking prey larger than themselves, like water buffalo, banteng, elephants, and rhinos.

Remaining hidden during the day, it stalks its prey only after dark. In hunting, it often lies in ambush, then gallops in pursuit of whatever is available, mainly medium to large mammals such as cattle, wild boar, deer, buffalo and, as well, man, being one of the few animals that regularly preys on humans. Prey that is too large to be eaten at a single feeding is dragged away and hidden in a thicket to which the tiger will return on the following days.

The tiger maintains a clearly stake-out territory which it patrols at regular intervals. It climbs well, swims, well, moves gracefully on land, and can attain great speed over short distances when chasing prey.
The tiger is one of nature’s most feared predators.

A picture of this animal is posted at the bottom of my page. Each campaign photo will remain on my page for at least three days. Watch tomorrow … there will be several pictures … two of them are of me “flying” down the stairs.

My campaign begins ...
African Lions

Lions are the only cats that live in groups, which are called prides. Prides are family units that may include up to three males, a dozen or so females, and their young. All of a pride's lionesses are related, and female cubs typically stay with the group as they age.

Young males eventually leave and establish their own prides by taking over a group headed by another male.
Only male lions boast manes, the impressive fringe of long hair that encircles their heads. Males defend the pride's territory, which may include some 100 square miles (259 square kilometers) of grasslands, scrub, or open woodlands. These intimidating animals mark the area with urine, roar menacingly to warn intruders, and chase off animals that encroach on their turf.

Female lions are the pride's primary hunters. They often work together to prey upon antelopes, zebras, wildebeest, and other large animals of the open grasslands. Many of these animals are faster than lions, so teamwork pays off.

After the hunt, the group effort often degenerates to squabbling over the sharing of the kill, with cubs at the bottom of the pecking order. Young lions do not help to hunt until they are about a year old. Lions will hunt alone if the opportunity presents itself, and they also steal kills from hyenas or wild dogs.

Lions have been celebrated throughout history for their courage and strength. They once roamed most of Africa and parts of Asia and Europe. Today they are found only in parts of sub-Saharan Africa, except for one very small population of Asian lions that survives in India's Gir Forest.

A picture of this animal is posted at the bottom of my page. Each campaign photo will remain on my page for at least three days.

HI Trixie...
Today is the last day of my reign as your Queen of January! I’ve enjoyed all of your visits and sweet notes, and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of the loving support you have given to me throughout my catpaign and my reign as your Garnet Queen! I have had a marvelous time and will treasure your furiendship and the memories forever!
I look forward to passing the Crown to our Queen-in-Waiting, Pappoose, and invite you to join us for the Coronation Ceremony to be held on Wednesday, February 1st at 4:30 PST - 7:30 EST, on the CMR #46883!

On this 31st day of January, we have NAME DAY fun for furiends, pawrents and families who have the following names:

I also have several more special naming stories waiting to be shared with you:

CHLOE #208036 tells us that her meowmy was named after a song by Lorenzo Barcelata - “Maria elena”!

MISSE #12393 is a Sweedish nickname for cat - like kitty in English....pronounced (miss-EH).

MOMO #176788 has always been known as MoMo!

CHYNA DOLL #45865 is so named because she was very fragile when Mom adopted her, and thought she looked like a china doll! KAYCEE is named after three airplanes that represent Mom’s interest in military planes. SHILO was abused and scared before Mom found him and is named for a scared wolf Mom saw at an animal refuge. HIMMY had baby blue eyes, so Mom called her sky... Himmel is a German name meaning sky or heaven!

CASHMERE #61835 tells us that she is named after the Led Zepplin song, CASHMERE!

EASY GOIN #58050 is so named because he is a laid back, easy goin cat!

CASHA #91523 is named after the Casha bush, pictured on his page.

SANDY #134659 is named for the color of her fur. It reminds Mom of the color of the beach sand along the Gulf Coast.
ANA #151490 was named Angel when she was at the shelter. Her Mom decided to name her after the Spanish version of the name ANNA, spelled ANA. She is also known as ANA BONANA!

Our Furiend SIR PUSHKIN #205156 shared the Irish names for black and white cats: BANIN - pronounced (bawn een) means little white one or Snowe! DUBH - pronounced (dove) means blackie!
Thank you all for sharing your wonderful naming stories! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~Please remember our furiends & pawrents who have special needs and keep them in your thoughts and prayers~
A new angel now graces the clouds & his mom is broken hearted. Please stop by to offer condolences & support to ANGEL ROCKY #3288 & his beloved family

**Congratulations to our COTD today: PIG & SISSY #210414

**Happy Birthday to: TILLY #67319

The temperature was high 55 & low was 39 this morning, now it's 54 with humidity 71& wind is 0 PH. Tuesday's suppose to be Rain & High 49.

Mom went to PetSmart this morning as we needed more kitty litter then she stopped at Wal*Mart to buy us inside kitties more Friskies Indoor Delights dry food as we used more than normal. Seems we all have good appetities including Callie!!! MOL!!!

I followed mom into Kittzi's 160203 & Sylvr Tuff's 160205 room late last night and mom just had to take a picture of me and Sylvr Tuff together just relaxing. Mom tells me how I am such a good girl in not hissing and being mean to them. Mom added our picture at the bottom of my page.

Callie is still here with us and no phone calls what so ever on finding her a new home. Mom and dad said if she would just quit that hissing and charging after us then she could live here forever. Callie really locks her eyes on Bahneetah 10641 and acts like she's ready to pounce on Bahneetah so mom tells Callie to be a good girl. Well, last night when mom let Callie out of her crate (mom always leaves that door opened on the crate when Callie's out) well anyways, Callie's been out roaming the house then she went back inside her crate to get a bite to eat and laid in her bed. Mom thought that was so cool for her to do and the first time she did that so mom got up and closed her crate door and locked it.

Thank you ALL for your support to me all the month of January in hopes of me becoming Queen of February. Mom and I really appreciate you very much.

Queen Victoria loved cats & she had 2 Blue Persians in the late 1800s making them xtremely popular in England.

Mom has an antique print of Queen Victoria with her 3 children, Prince Albert and a long time friend. Mom added that picture at the bottom of my page as well.

Hi Trixie...
I'm glad to know that everything is ok with you and your family.....
¶§¶ ROYAL MEWS ¶§¶

Happy Monday!
There are only two more days left for me to serve as your Queen of January, and to share Name Days with you! So, for today, January 30th, it’s NAME DAY FOR:
My secretary informs me that we still have more naming stories from our furriends!

DUMBO #3463 met his pawrents at the Garden State cat show. He wowed them with his gorgeous spotted coat, beautiful blue eyes, & big ears! Little did they know that he had many health problems. But their loving care made the difference for D’bo, and he just marked his 15th birthday. They decided to name him Dumbo cause his ears were so big that they used to say: if he could flap his ears and hold a crow’s feather wrapped in his tail, he could fly!

SPARKLES K. & DASHER tell us that Mom & Dad named them after the holidays they were adopted on! SPARKLES K. #199906 was adopted on the 4th of July, is named after the sparkles that spray off the end of the sparkler! DASHER #225951 was adopted near Christmas, and started out being Kringle, but he dashed around so much they changed his name to Dasher!

MOOCHIE MOOCH #216182 came by to tell her cute story: She is named after the tuxedo cat in the comic strip MUTTS...whose name is Mooch, & sometimes called Moochie! MOOCHIE MOOCH is furmom to Black Pearl! #216182

SEBASTIEN’S Mom rescued him from the humane society. She wanted to give him a “saintly” name like her previous kitties Gideon & Pascal (after Balise Pascal), and a French name as well. He is named after Saint Sebastian with the French spelling for Sebastien. #143982
KIEARA #144964 was so named when Mom found her at the humane society.
TIMOTHY’s namesake is the Timothy of the Bible; also known as Timmy! TIA was originally named Tiger when it was believed that she was a he! #144764
¶SPARKY #3436 is still in need of prayer as he awaits more test results about possible cancer from the vet.

¶Angel Crossing Remembrance today for:
RAJAH #3097 on January 30, 2008
SHADOW #28988 on January 20, 2009

¶§¶Remember to stop by with a vote for Pappoose #10366 as she nears the end of the catpaign trail!
Details for the Passing of the Crown Ceremony will be posted on the CMR #46883 on January 31st. ¶§¶

***Vote COTD for special recognition candidates…SISSY & PIG #210414***

¶Happy Birthday meows to: AZERIA - #32437

¶Happy Adoptiversary to: DEAN #36497

Have a beautiful and blessed day!
With love to all from Queen Charlotte

Dear Trixie & Family!

You are cordially invited to the Royal Castle for a Gala Celebration Ball this Saturday evening, January 28th, at 8pm (est). K Pete and the Royal Exploration team will make a formal presentation of the extraordinary discoveries they made as their research took them through the tunnels and caves beneath the Castle.

Following their presentation, a Royal Dinner is planned, with entertainment and dancing to follow, with music provided by our very own talented DJ, Misty! There will also be a special appearance of the Angelic Choir!

I have also made arrangements for every kitty to enjoy the day at the Royal Spa! A full buffet of feline delicacies awaits you as you indulge yourselves with warm towel wraps, pawdicures, furr-do’s, soft fluffing, and comb-outs for extra-long and curly fur! Tail-bobbing services are also available! Our expert staff informs me that they have a new line of Furr-gel for those kitties who prefer the slicked-back look! They also offer extensions and ribbon-braiding for that extra-special furr-do!

It is with great pleasure that I look forward to seeing you on Saturday for an evening of friendship and celebration, as we welcome our team of explorers, and offer them our gratitude for their remarkable dedication to preserving the history, science, art and culture of the Feline Empire. Festivities will take place on the CMR page #46883!

With fondness and love to all from Charlotte
Your Garnet Queen!
