Oahu ...
Lovely Hawaiian ladies place leis on our necks as we disembark in Honolulu. These are a special gift of aloha - welcome, and love. The ladies receive those made of white ginger or jasmine … our choice. I love jasmine; my choice is simple. Oh, the beautiful fragrance. No wonder everyone wants one of these when in Hawaii. For the men, there are leis of kukui nuts. With our shirts and dresses from Hilo Hatties, we are ready to explore the final island of our Hawaiian adventure.

Here, Hawaii’s timeless beauty blends with the modern luxuries of today. We can swim in the warm waters of world-famous Waikiki one moment, then enjoy the dramatic mountain views of the Nuuanu Pali Lookout another; watch the surfers on the legendary North Shore by day, then dance the night away in vibrant nightlife spots around Honolulu; get a taste of local flavors in Kapahulu one night, then dine at a Five Diamond Hawaii Regional Cuisine restaurant the next.

Our first visit is to 350 acre Diamond Head crater, one of the best-known volcanic craters in the world, whose vantage point offers some incredible panoramas of Honolulu. We choose to start early to avoid the heat of the sun. Diamond Head State Monument encompasses over 475 acres, including the interior and outer slopes of the crater. This broad, saucer-shaped crater was formed about 300,000 years ago during a single, explosive eruption that sent ash and fine particles in the air. As these materials settled, they cemented together into a rock called tuff. The panoramic views of Waikiki and Oahu's south shore from the top are impressive. We will have many gorgeous photos for our memory books. We learn the crater was named Diamond Head by 19th century British sailors who thought they discovered diamonds on the crater's slopes. These "diamonds" were actually shiny calcite crystals that had no value. The volcanic crater, a major Oahu landmark, has been extinct for 150,000 years.

Next we travel to Iolani Palace, the only royal palace in the US. It was the official residence of King Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani, the last king and queen to rule Hawaii; the monarchy was abolished in 1893. We take the guided tour, which leaves us thinking our own Castle on CC is just as impressive and much more inviting to fun-loving kitties.

Time for an island luau dinner and then to bed as tomorrow we head to Pearl Harbor. See pics of Diamond Head and the palace on my page.

Come visit me, Q. Cherish - COTM March 2012.

Molokai
Serene seascapes, unspoiled coastlines, untamed wilderness. We visit Molokai & travel back to a timeless place. This is an island that stays true to its Hawaiian traditions - tucked away from the hustle of the outside world; where no building is taller than a coconut tree; there’s no traffic & no traffic lights; where you can feel the power of Hawaiian culture from an area near Maunaloa, said to be the birthplace of hula, to the natural wonders of Halawa Valley.

Molokai is only 38 miles long and 10 miles across at its widest point. It is a friendly & family-oriented island that has deep connections with its Hawaiian ancestors. Unlike the visitor industry on the larger Hawaiian Islands, Molokai has preserved its true Hawaiian culture. More than one third of this island's residents have over 50% Hawaiian blood. Molokai residents farm, fish, hunt & gather many of their basic needs & they enjoy this lifestyle. Here we need to slow down, be less demanding, & respect the Molokai way of life. Molokai is the real deal. We are visiting the true Hawaii. We will enjoy & respect Molokai & her people.

Lining the northeast coast are the towering cliffs of the North Shore Pali. At 3,600 to 3,900 feet from sea base to top, they are the tallest sea cliffs in the world; their near-vertical plunge ends 2000 feet below sea level. We step cautiously to the edge to peek over. Whoa, that’s a drop! Later in the day, we do some ocean kayaking along the face of the cliffs; this is amazing beyond belief! We also discover secret, secluded beaches, sea birds, & cascading waterfalls which provide incredible, photogenic scenery

We then hike into the East End’s classic cathedral valley to see Hawaii back in time. It is believed ancient Polynesians settled in lush Halawa Valley as early as 650 AD. This area, half a mile wide and three to four miles deep, and blessed with beautiful vistas and towering waterfalls, is one of the island's most historic areas. Roughly two miles up the trail is the impressive, double-tiered 250-foot Moa’ula Falls. If you’re considering taking a dip into the pool, drop a ti leaf into the water first. Hawaiian legend says that a giant moo (lizard) lives at the bottom of the pool. If the ti leaf sinks, the moo is in no mood for visitors. If the ti leaf floats, it’s safe to enter. Our ti leaves are forming a veritable flotilla, and we slip gratefully into the refreshing pool. Soon we are splashing and playing like … well, kitties.

We have been invited to a luau by the residents of a small village near Maunaloa, birthplace of the hulu. After dining on succulent roast pig, and all the tasty side dishes, we are given grass skirts to put on for a hula lesson. Soon we are dancing and telling the stories of the island, looking almost like natives.

Tomorrow we will head for the island of Oahu, where our Hawaiian adventure will eventually finish.

Come visit me, Q. Cherish - COTM March 2012.

Hi Angel Sir Chancellor
Thank you for stopping by to remember my crossing anniversary on the 19th dear furiend & I apologize for the delay in responding back!
It's hard for mom to believe that I've been gone for 5 years now because the memories she has of me are as fresh as if they happened yesterday. Time does indeed help heal the heart but the pawprints I left can never be erased. Thanks again for remembering me & for showing how much you care by being there for my family!

So many of our dear furriends ...
... have come by to wish Mom and me a Happy 14th Adoptiversary! Some were unable to make it that day, but have been over since to see us. We appreciate each and every visit. We even had visits from brand new furriends ... what a nice gift that was.

Mom is trying to find enough vases to put all the beautiful flowers into. I have nibbled my way through a huge amount of tuna, chicken, cheese, and all sorts of delights. (Cherish gives a tiny, ladylike burp.)

It does appear I have a diabetic condition, but right now it is under control with diet and cuddles and lots of brushing. Mom is handling the diet part; I am making sure the cuddles and brushing get done. Just call me Dr. Cherish. My water intake is back to normal, as are the little urine deposits I leave in my litter box. Hey! Mom even got me a new litter box. How cool is that?

The new car is working out well so far. The pawrents will take it in for a check up soon, and then over to the car wash. Parts of it really need a bath. Our old Jeep is headed for auction for parts; that bad. We are just fortunate the car broke down so close to home and not while on a long trip or on our terribly busy freeways. No brakes, no steering control could have led to a most undesirable outcome. So, Mom has me, she and Dad have the nice used SUV for now, and I ... well, I have all of you! Truly we are blessed.

Come visit me, Q. Cherish - COTM March 2012.

Cherish and her mom ...
... will celebrate 14 years together on Monday March 4. Please come by to enjoy some of the yummies prepared for this event. We look forward to seeing you here with us.

Still watching and waiting to see how the new food is going to work over the long haul. Mom is very cautiously optimistic. She and Dad let the Jeep go yesterday, bringing home a used car to take its place. Things just keep changing, don't they?

Come visit me, Q. Cherish - COTM March 2012.

The Island of Lanai ...
Lanai is a destination of untouched tranquility. Enthralling sights like the lunar landscapes of Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods) are distinctly unique to Lanai. This is a park that has amazing rock formations. We arrive by four-wheel drive vehicles. The approach is dramatic. For miles we see shrubs, grasses, & bits of red dirt. Then all of the sudden, there are hundreds of rounded rocks & very little vegetation. It is almost as if there had been a storm that rained rocks. We are warned not to remove any of the rocks … there is a distinct sound of hard items striking the ground as they fall. A bit of throat-clearing & chuckling provide counterpoint to it. We wander about feeling a bit like we are visiting Mars. We look back as we leave … is this the original rock garden or what?

We get into our Land Rovers, as there are only 30 miles of paved road on Lanai, leaving 400 miles of dirt road to explore. We are headed to Kaiolohia, also known as Shipwreck Beach, to see a derelict ship stuck in the rocky waters of Lanai’s north shore. We drive down a bumpy dirt road, finally reaching this fascinating place, & realizing it is quite the photo-op. The Liberty, a rusty World War II tanker, is lodged on Kaiolohia Bay's coral reef within sight of the beach; it is a bit eerie but still fascinating. We wander to the water’s edge. Peeking around an abutment, we see portions of yet another shipwreck lying in a sandy cove. No way to get over there, we discover, without getting our paws & other parts very wet, but I have put pictures of both boats on my page. Take a look.

Finally, we continue our bumpy drive to secluded Polihua Beach, where we find ourselves all alone on a 2-mile stretch of sand. We are just across the channel from Molokai. We take advantage of the opportunity to stretch our legs & work out the kinks. The guides tell us Hawaii’s green sea turtles frequent this shoreline & humpback whales can be spotted from here during the winter months. When we do encounter several endangered turtles we are asked not to touch or disturb them. We enjoy watching them for a short while … they don’t do much … just lie there … then we turn our attention to the ocean where a pod of humpback whales is transiting the area. How nice to see them again. We wonder if they are the same whales we saw just days ago on our boating jaunt. A flipper is waved in our direction & we chose to believe the whale is saying “nice to see you again”.

Although we’ve done some diving & swimming since beginning our Hawaiian visit, the current here is incredibly strong so swimming is extremely discouraged. We are told jagged lava rocks are everywhere out there. This remote area is, however, a great place to beachcomb & sunbathe. As we are the only ones on the beach, we take full advantage of the opportunity to stretch out & relax while listening to the sound of the waves striking the shore. See pics of today’s visits on my page.

Come visit me, Q. Cherish - COTM March 2012.

2/23/13 Happy Caturday and Big Thank You All!
Sorry we did not start yesterday, but mom was just feeling overtired with all the snow she had to clear and then there was Zeus, who snuck out twice! The snow was soft and up to his neck. Didn't stop him! Mom just stood outside and let him have a good run, because chasing him wouldn't have done any good and he does know where the door is.

Anyway, we want to thank you so much for our Meezers ACOTD and all the friends, who came by in memory of the fourth Anniversary of A.Rosebud's passing. Rosebud was very special to mom and I don't know how much you know of her story. She was originally rescued as a kitten by a friend of mom's. She was probably over two years, when mom's friend asked her to kitty sit Rosebud and another female black LH named Midnight for the first time, because they were moving to Duluth, MN and did not have a house picked out in that area yet. The two cats were neither spayed or vet checked for a long time, so mom took them on the agreement that she would get that done, with no cost to the family. Mom's friend has a learning disability and the family had other dysfunctions, including an alcoholic husband. The cats were not abused, but there was never money for proper vet care. Anyway, the cats were spayed and returned to the family, once they had a home in that city. A few years passed and the family was moving again. This time they had Rosebud and a year old pup named Ginger and were planning a drive to Florida. Midnight, who was up in her teens, had passed the Bridge due to breast cancer. When mom had her spayed, she had several tumors and they had been removed, but they did come back and she was brought to a vet and euthanized, before they moved again. The Tumors were inoperable and cancer had spread. Anyway, this time they asked mom to take Rosebud and keep her, because they knew mom loved Rosebud and would give her the best home possible. Mom also asked for their dog, a Rottweiler mix. She could see that Ginger was very gentle and friendly, but fearing the family had been living homeless more than once, she knew that often Animal Control people would simply euthanize certain breeds of dogs, if they were taken in. Mom was determined that that would not happen to Ginger. The original contract was that they had to demonstrate they had jobs and a secure place to live. That did not happen. Ginger is almost 13 and still with us.

Sorry, we were going to tell more about Rosebud too, but are running out of room, so will do that on Tuesday. Needless to say, she also lived with mom several years until she crossed the Bridge. Thank you so much for all your votes, both for her, our Angel Meezers and for me, King Barney. As I come to my last week, I cannot totally tell you what a special time it has been and do hope our friend JosieMae has as much fun as we have. Love to all, K.Barney and family, mom Judi too.

Early morning finds us heading to ...
... the old whaling town of Lahaina, where we are taken by boat to an area where we will hopefully see humpback whales. At one time, the whales seemed headed for extinction, but a ban on commercial whaling in 1986 and the Marine Mammal Protection Act have brought this species back from the brink, though they are still listed as endangered. Hawaii hosts approximately 50 percent of the central North Pacific stock of humpback whales, placing the region right at the heart of a true conservation success story. We are told it is possible to hear the whales when underwater from as far away as 300 miles.

The boat reaches an area where the whales have congregated. These creatures generally spend less than 10 percent of their time at the surface, and we catch just fleeting glimpses of their behavior. To get the full perspective, we need to see the underwater portion, so with that in mind, our captain has arranged for us to be taken on an underwater tour of the pod. We grab air tanks, masks & cameras & slip gently into the water, then gently push away from the side of the boat & float toward the behemoths. They look like BIG FISH, but are actually mammals, rising to the surface regularly to breathe.

Looking down into 200 feet of water we see resting just below us a 45-foot-long female humpback whale. From below her massive girth, a tiny calf peeks out. New humpback moms rarely rest with such young calves in tow, so we know that is a moment not to be missed. Following our dive master, we float gently in their direction, taking photos for our memory books … and to convince everyone back home that we really did have this amazing experience. An adult male drifts our way, but seems to be merely curious about us. As he moves past us, we feel the force of the water his massive body displaces.

The whales do not seem concerned about our presence in their midst, but we remain watchful and are careful not to upset them in any way. Panicking a pod of humpback whales is NOT something one would want to do. All too soon it is time to return to the boat. The crew assists us on board and we sit for a moment, unable to speak … just looking at one another. Did we really just do that? Wow!

We slip out of our gear and gather at the boat’s side to peer down into the water … we wave goodbye to our newfound friends as the boat heads for shore. On my page is a picture of several of us peering over the side of the boat. Take a look.

We spend some time in Lahaina dining on … what else … fresh fish and the sweetest fruits imaginable. This is living. We know we will leave here tonight and head to yet another island, but for the moment we just drink it all in. We know we will be reliving the past three days well into the night. See the pics on my page.

Come visit me, Q. Cherish - COTM March 2012.

The Road to Hana ...
... is one of the most remarkable experiences in all of Hawaii. It comprises more than 60 miles of highway, carved into the cliffs of one of the most beautiful rainforests in the world. Its curves hug the coastline of the blue Pacific, & its dramatic landscape will take your breath away. It is located in eastern Maui & is full of the wonders of Hawaii you've always imagined. Its 620 curves & 59 bridges lead you through flourishing rainforests, flowing waterfalls, plunging pools & dramatic seascapes. One of those waterfalls is 400 feet high. There are plenty of opportunities to stop & enjoy the lovely views, so we get an early star. Although legendary road to Hana is only 52 miles from Kahului, the drive can take anywhere from two to four hours to complete since it's fraught with narrow one-lane bridges, hairpin turns & incredible island views.

We have chosen to ride in open vehicles in order to experience all the road has to offer. At one point, we pull to the side of the road … blocking traffic, as it is quite narrow … in order to get certain purrsons off the hoods & back into the vehicles. Yes, the ride is cool, Dude, but safety first. Moans & groans & a few giggles as we look through the pictures of “our boys”.

Hana, isolated from the rest of the island, is truly the last undeveloped tropical paradise on Maui. The natural beauty of the Hana experience will take you back in time & give you an idea of what the rest of Maui was like 30 years ago.

Just past Hana are the Pools of Oheo, where waterfalls spill into seven tiered pools leading to the sea. We climb to the top of the trail & soon are sliding full speed ahead through the pools. Once is not enough, & soon we need to be gathered together & made to get back on the bus.

A bit further we reach the outskirts of Haleakala National Park. Before entering the park, we try something else new to most of us … ziplining. This is the original zipline tour & the first zipline adventure to open in the United States. This proves to be an unforgettable adventure for all. There are five picturesque zipline crossings & an Indiana Jones style swinging bridge through a towering forest. We fly through the trees on this one-of-a-kind adventure, each zipline crossing getting longer & more exciting, & by the end even more timid guests are whooping & hollering on the thrilling zipline that finishes the adventure.

Stretching across Maui’s southern & eastern coastline, Haleakala National Park is home to Maui's highest peak. Rising 10,023 feet above sea level, Haleakala's graceful slopes can be seen from just about any point on the island. Haleakala means "house of the sun" in Hawaiian, & legend has it that the demigod Maui lassoed the sun from its journey across the sky as he stood on the volcano’s summit, slowing its descent to make the day last even longer. Sunset arrives as we stand at a viewpoint partway up the peak. We will spend the night here in tents. See pics, my page.

We arrive on Maui ...
... the next island in the chain, and head over to Hilo Hattie’s. There we try on and purchase shirts and sun dresses in a myriad of colors … blues, red, green, yellow, pink and more … all with gorgeous flower and shell patterns on them. This is in preparation for a luau which we will attend later today. After picking out our party clothes, we wander over to the counter where there is a huge bowl of salt water with … are you ready … pearl oysters lying at its bottom. A small fee buys us an oyster and when it is opened … a pearl. Were you expecting it to be white? Not a chance … these are lovely colors ranging from pinks, creams, blues, all the way to silver and black. This one is a beautiful pink-gold. Suddenly everyone has to buy an oyster. When we finally leave the store, we are adorned in pearl earrings, pendants, rings, and tie tacks. I don’t think they have an oyster left in the building. MOL!

Our next stop is a small farmer’s market … wooden tables are set up under a canopy. We wander through, picking up a variety of fresh fruits to snack on later. One of our purchases is a number of pineapples … they are trimmed, cut into spears, and then into bite size pieces. If you’ve never had a Maui Gold pineapple, you have missed a real treat. They taste like they have been soaked in sugar water … sweet, with true pineapple flavor bursting in your mouth.

A light lunch at a restaurant hung out over the water’s edge … we sit on the balcony and look over the rail into clear-as-air water through which swim a veritable rainbow of fish. Again, we are informed there is to be NO SNACKING! Several of the furfellows “accidentally” fall over the rail and into the water, but they are rescued quite quickly … have to keep those fish safe. Steve, Tucker and Bart change into dry shirts and wipe the grins off their faces, but I can hear them chuckling still.

It is time … we have changed into our new Hawaiian garb, and the bus has brought us to our luau. One of the highlights of Maui Luaus is the Imu Ceremony, when the Kalua Pig, the evening’s main course, is unearthed from the underground oven. There are many additional items, including teriyaki chicken, steak, fish, pork, salads, fresh fruits, vegetables, poi, and an array of desserts. We have brought our appetites, and eagerly satisfy our hunger.

After a delicious meal, a sunset unfolds before our eyes and makes way for an evening of entertainment. Drums, hula dancing, and fire are incorporated into extravagant luau shows. As the sounds of Hawaii, Tahiti, and Samoa surround us, we sit back and soak up the music and dancing of Polynesia. Time to truly enjoy the tradition and spirit of the Hawaiian people. An invitation is given to join in the dancing … a number of us respond and are soon being taught the secret language of the hulu. A story is told through each dance, our paws writing on the evening air a romantic tale or one of adventure and daring. Sunset pic, my page.

We arise very early to head out ...
surfing at Kahaluu Beach. Surfing was at one time literally the "Sport of Kings" in Hawaii, reserved only for royalty. Today we can either watch this exciting sport from the safety of the shore or experience the rush of catching a wave ourselves by taking a surfing lesson. We are told that experienced instructors will take first-timers to safe breaks and get them on their feet and “riding the waves” within a two-hour lesson. Those of us who are novices race to be first in line … only to find there are enough instructors to teach all. What fun this promises to be.

Another prominent form of surfing in the ocean today includes bodyboarding, which refers to when a surfer rides a wave on the belly on a bodyboard which is shorter than a surfboard and usually made of a lighter material. Some of our group prefer to “ride the waves” in this manner. Most of the ladies choose this.

And then there’s bodysurfing, the act of surfing a wave without a board, is considered by some to be the purest form of surfing. Soon K. Steve, Ernie, Bart, Tucker and that Darn Bee Gee have mastered the art and are entertaining all with their antics. The rest of the furrfellows decide to attempt this as well, with varying results … most of which are quite entertaining.

Our instructors tell us the Guinness Book of World Records recognized a 78 foot (23.8 m) wave ride by Garrett McNamara at Nazaré, Portugal as the largest wave ever surfed. This has us eyeing the 15 foot waves we’ve been attacking and trying to imagine a wave more than 5 times higher. Gulp.

A picnic on the beach and then we are on our way to experience a real submarine tour! We board a boat which takes us out to the submarine. Once there we climb down into the viewing area, which consists of seats facing portholes, pretty much like at a Disney park. But this is a REAL SUBMARINE and we were soon diving into the habitat of countless, exotic sea creatures. Gazing through our spacious viewports, we exchange glances with hundreds of fish of different species dwelling in the waters off the coast of the island. The dive site is about 130 feet deep with coral formations and artificial reefs with sunken ships and airplanes. We see a shark, lots of colorful reef fish, sting rays and green sea turtles. The tour guide assigned to our submarine is not only knowledgeable but also very informative of every marine life in the deep ocean. She points out to us every fish species we encounter.

Before we know it the 45 minute tour has ended and once our submarine surfaces we disembark and board the awaiting shuttle boat to take us back to shore. This was definitely a worthwhile and enjoyable experience.

When we arrive back at our ship, we find the captain has arranged for us to have a late supper. We dine on all manner of fresh fish caught here in the waters right off the island. What a day this has been, and we spend the next few hours reliving it with our dear furriends. See a picture of a sea turtle on my page.

The second day on Hawaii ...
… we will visit someplace a bit different. We are headed for the Seahorse Farm near Kona where they have over 2000 seahorses and are currently breeding over 15 different species characteristically unique shape, from the horsey looking head down to the long, curling tail. Then there’s the seahorses’ covering, a delicate skin stretched over bony plates rather than regular scales.

Before we begin our seahorse adventure, we need to make something purrfectly clear: Seahorses are for viewing, NOT for snacking.

Once inside we discover that Seahorses come in a variety of colors, with some species even changing their hue to match their surroundings. The Seahorse is a truly unique marine animal. At first glance, one might not even know a seahorse is a fish, with their unique upright posture. They have a distinctive long, tube-shaped snout with a prehensile tail that grabs onto corals and plants. Their jaws are small and only allow enough room to suck in small pieces of food. Seahorses are part of the family Syngnathidae, which also includes Sea Dragons and Pipefish. There are currently thought to be 80 species of seahorses found throughout the world’s oceans. They range in size from just over 1cm for pygmy seahorses and up to 14 inches for the Pot Belly Seahorse. This seahorse farm was the first one in the world and is the only one in the US. The guided tour lasts about an hour, the guide showing us various tanks where we watch them swim, hook tails and dance. We learn that sea horses mate for life. Beautiful, fascinating and mysterious, the seahorse is a fish like no other.

Next we visit Pana`ewa Rainforest Zoo, which is very unique; it is the only natural tropical rainforest zoo in the United States. It is home to more than 80 species of animals! First we take a regal walk amidst peacocks in tropical gardens. We then head for encloses where we see the binturong, giant anteaters, 'Io (Hawaiian hawk), white Bengal tiger, and lemurs galore. There are lush and exotic plants providing perches for beautifully colored birds. We enjoy our picnic lunch which we eat on benched tables; after which we enjoy ice cream bars from the zoo snack shop.

And now, off to the beach! Many Big Island beaches are among the best you will find anywhere, period. This is especially true along the sunny west coast. Mauna Kea - Kauna'oa Beach is a beautiful, long crescent of fine white sand with crystal-clear water; one of the favorite beaches on the Big Island. It offers excellent swimming and snorkeling, and has full facilities. We throw our towels onto the sand, strip down to bathing suits, and race into the water … warm, soothing, and a great place to unwind.

We choose to linger until the sun begins to drop below the horizon. Awesome. The colors are unlike anything we’ve yet seen on our Round the World Cruise. This was definitely worth waiting for. See pics of seahorses on my page.

We have reached our destination...
Hawaii … The Big Island. It is the furthest south of any in the island chain, and it's larger than all the other islands put together. It is also a place where one can ski in the daytime and walk barefoot in a warm sea at sundown. We will spend a couple of days at least exploring all it has to offer. The island is the youngest in the Hawaiian chain. It provides a vast canvass of environments to discover a variety of unrivaled natural wonders: the tallest sea mountain in the world at 33,000 feet – Maunakea; and the most massive mountain in the world - Maunaloa.

Watch the landscape change before your very eyes at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Located 30 miles southwest of Hilo is Kilauea volcano, one of the most active volcanoes on earth. It has been erupting since January 3rd, 1983. The chance to witness the primal process of creation and destruction make this park one of the most popular visitor attractions in Hawaii. January 2013 marked the 30th anniversary of the beginning of Kilauea’s eruptions. Volcanoes are monuments to Earth's origin, evidence that its primordial forces are still at work. During a volcanic eruption, we are reminded that our planet is an ever-changing environment whose basic processes are beyond human control. As much as we have altered the face of the Earth to suit our needs, we can only stand in awe before the power of an eruption.

Hawaii emerged from the sea millions of years ago, forged by the power of volcanoes. Loihi is located underwater off the southern coast of Hawaii Island. Erupting since 1996, this emerging seamount may break the surface in about 250,000 years, adding a ninth island to the Hawaiian chain.

Today we will be taken by helicopter to view Kilauea. We gather our cameras and courage and hop aboard. Within a short time, we arrive at area adjacent to the volcano. Keeping a safe distance, the helicopter circles the area, allowing us to take many pictures and to see how massive this natural wonder truly is. Not a steep-sided volcano, as we thought it would be, but rather spreading out and comprising approximately half of the island of Hawaii, we realize this thing is BIG.

Our next stop is Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory – We’ve seen the blue cans and boxes in the shops; now we visit the source. We take a self-guided tour of the factory, watching in one area how the nuts are blanketed with chocolate. We then enter a room where there are samples for us to try. We taste the macadamia nuts plain, salted, in brittle and covered in milk chocolate. In the gift shop, we purchase some of our favorites to take back to the ship.

Back to the ship for dinner with the Captain. Once in our rooms for the night, we talk of what we’ve seen and experienced, and munch on our macadamia treats. A quick face wash to clean our whiskers of chocolate and other sweet traces, then into our beds where we fall quickly asleep.
