How We Met

Mom was feeding the ducks behind some restaurant and she saw me watching her. She would do this feeding ritual everyday around 330 AM and I would watch her. She would leave me a can in the bushes on the side of the building. Anytime she would try to get near me I would hiss at her. We went through this feeding for a while. I began to trust her and the rest is history. ............. I love my Mom! I still LIKE to go outside our home when Mom lets me. She feels its too dangerous. ~ * ~ JB is a great kitty, very loving, kind and in tune with humans especially his Mom. We have a very close, unbreakable, tight bond. I think he can read my mind! He has taught me many things and I love him very much!!!!

Vote Smoke's Angels * #226582 * 5/25/12 *
From Duckies’ Desk: Have you met Smoke’s Angels, # 226582? Smoke’s Angels is a page dedicated to the loving memory of a group of Kitties that have touched the lives of a loving and caring family for many, many years. All Of these kitties are angels now and all but one of them found this loving family. Although this touching story did not start with Smoke he knew all the kitty's that will eventually be on this page. He reigned supreme in the family’s house for 18 years. Most of these Angels have crossed the bridge In the last 10 years and it has been very difficult to say goodbye to so many babies in such a short time. All now reside in the family’s Kitty Cemetery. Although this page is dedicated to the memory of several Angels it is named in memory of Smoke. Smoke came to his forever family in 1989, missing an eye and had a terrible ripped leg, they think a large bird had gotten hold of him but somehow he got away. Smoke bonded with his family instantly and found a deep love that would span 18 years. Smoke’s family miss him dearly and Smoke still loves his special family very much. This Angel would love to send his family a special gift on Saturday, May 26th, a gift of his Cat of the Day Badge. On Friday, May 25th, please go to page #226582 and vote for this very deserving Angel so he can earn his Cat of the Day Badge and send his loving family this special gift!

Surprise ACOTD for ANGEL JAKE #142474 ~
~
From Duckie’s Desk: ANGEL JAKE #142474 is a very quiet angel on CC these days but is remembered as the sweetest cat in the world by his loving family. He was the icing on the cake of life for them when they saw his handsome face in the pet store, and they happily added him to their multi-cat household without a second thought. JAKE #142474 became ill near the end of 2009 and received his first COTD badge on 12/26/09, thanks to the outpouring of love for him as he celebrated his birthday the day before. He was scheduled for surgery the following day to find out why he was so sick, so while the family waited and hoped, all of CC prayed for him and his family. Apparently the angels needed a special boy like SWEET JAKE #142474 to join their ranks though because the diagnoses came back as terminal lymphatic cancer. His family and friends were devastated by the news and knowing they couldn’t let him suffer any longer, the family made the very difficult decision to help him cross the Rainbow Bridge on 12/29/09. ANGEL JAKE #142474 is now spreading his benevolence down on all of us and we’d like to honor him Saturday by helping him get an ACOTD badge to adorn his cloud so he knows he’s not forgotten just because he became an angel. Please stop by to visit ANGEL JAKE #142474 on Friday April 27th, and while you’re there please pounce on his vote button so that we can watch him skipping across the stars in heavenly joy Saturday night with a new golden badge proudly sparkling as brightly as his halo.

SURPRISE ANGEL CAMPAIGN for 4/20~
From Duckies’ Desk: ~Have you met ANGEL ANGEL #133708? She is a kitty without a badge on her page so we’d like to surprise her with a special campaign Friday & need your help to complete this secret mission! This sweet kitty was trying to find a safe place in a neighborhood with her 3 kittens but was having problems with people chasing her away. Her soon-to-be furever mom saw this & started putting food by her garage every day to show her that not all people were unfriendly to cats. ANGEL #133708 got so used to the idea that she went inside the garage & discovered that loving humans did exist & she’d found the purrfect one. She was taken to the vet for shots & spaying so she knew in her little kitty heart that this home was hers to call her own. ANGEL #133708 joined CC in April 2009 & was called to the heavens at the end of November 2011. She’s still missed by her sweet mom, her adopted older sibling Giovanni, as well as doggie sibs Aussie & Rowdy from DC. Please help us honor this beautiful angel by pawing a vote her way on Friday April 20 so she’ll know she’s not forgotten by her CC family & friends.

* VOTE ANGELS BUSTER & LOUIE * 4/13/12 *
From Duckies’ Desk: Have you met Angels Buster and Louie, #210737? Once or maybe twice in someone's lifetime a cat will come along who not only steals your heart but holds onto it forever. This was the case of Buster and Louie and describes the bond that these two lucky kitties had with their forever family. Louie was found half crawling in the middle of the street. His eyes were so infected they were swollen shut, and his nose was so blocked he had to struggle to breathe. He was given antibiotics for his respiratory infection and antibiotic drops in his eyes. He slowly got better but his eyes were so infected his family was afraid he might lose his sight. He was lucky, though. His eyes got better but his left eye was always a little weepy.
Buster’s mama was abandoned in the neighborhood while she was pregnant, and had her kittens under a neighbor's house. She moved the babies to their forever family’s yard and behind the barn of another neighbor. Buster’s future family had already begun to feed his momma and she was starting to trust them. Buster had found his home!
Louie crossed the Rainbow Bridge on April 28, 2011, and Buster crossed on March 16, 2011. Angels Buster and Louie would love to send their family a special gift on Saturday, April 14th. This gift would be the gift of their Cat of The Day Badge. Please stop by these deserving Angels’ page, #210737 and cast a vote for Angel Buster and Louie on Friday, April 13th, 2012 so they can send their family this special gift!

PLS VOTE FELICITY #92039 COTD SAT 4/7!
We wanted to do a special Easter campaign for a deserving kitty, as this is such a special holiday to so many of us, including our candidate. Felicity has been part of our CC family for nearly four years and has been a supportive and caring kitty to anyone who needs a bit of comfort or an extra purr! Felicity has been very helpful to us on our Birthday Central page, and even thought she is a retired reporter, she still continues to let us know when someone is having a birthday or adoptiversary. As many of you know, Felicity and her pawrents lost their dear Angel Baby last November, but at this time of year, more than any other, we know that our loved ones are never truly gone, but have only moved on to another destination in the journey. We, too, will all make that journey one day to be reunited with those who have gone before us.

Please stop by to leave Felicity #92039 a vote on Saturday, April 7th, so she can be our Easter COTD. We know it will mean so much to her and her pawrents!

Whether you celebrate Easter, Passover, or just the arrival of Springtime, we hope you take a moment to appreciate all the miracles around us and the hope that the season brings.

Happy Easter and Happy Passover!

VOTE ANGEL MARKUS * 4/6/12 * ACOTD
From Duckie’s Desk: Have you met Angel Markus, #219297? Markus crossed the Beautiful Rainbow Bridge on November 14th, 2011. Since that time Angel Markus has taken a very active part in welcoming Kitties across the Rainbow Bridge and showing them the great love that he experienced in his lifetime. Markus was dropped off at an animal shelter and being a perfectly healthy kitty he was taken in by a loving family who fell in love with this beautiful young male cat. Markus was a very happy cat and he felt his forever families love every day. Markus was very playful and had a life filled with everything a kitty could ever want! Markus developed an intestine problem that would take his life at the age of 11 years. Angel Markus said goodbye to his family in November of 2011. We have reached day 26 of my campaign ...
Today I am posting this myself, BUT Mom’s computer will not be available to her until late on Thursday. Dear furriend Sassy and her mom have agreed to post my blog on the CMR page #46883 on Mon – Wed. On Thursday, I am being crowned in absentia, but will arrive later that day to visit and celebrate with you. Hang in there … I’ll be back.

Check each day at the bottom of my page for pics, even during my reign. This adventure is not ending; it’s only just begun. You’ll see.

Probably the most recognizable of the primates is the

Chimpanzee

Probably the most intelligent animal, next to man, the chimpanzee manifests many parallels to human behavior. Although its senses are similar to ours, it probably has a keener sense of smell. Other than man, the chimpanzee is one of the only animals that make and use tools. For example, it peels the bark from sticks and then uses those bare sticks to probe tree holds for insects. A chimpanzee uses far more facial and body gestures and a wider range of sounds than any animal other than man.

Usually in a slouch, rarely holding itself upright, a chimpanzee walks on its knuckles while moving about mainly on the ground, although it also climbs. A chimpanzee spends many hours of each day foraging for food, mainly ripe fruit and young leaves. It may eat as many as two dozen different types of plants in a single day.

A newborn chimpanzee is totally dependent on its mother. When a few days old it clings to the front of its mother’s body, by six months it rides on her back and by four years is walking alongside. It will then remain close to its mother for up to eight years. Chimpanzees live in communities ranging in size from about a dozen to over one hundred.

Like other arboreal monkeys, the chimpanzee is very noisy, issuing hoots and high-pitched screams at the slightest provocation.

See a picture of this animal at the bottom of my page. *** The next three animal pics will be on my page also. I think you are all smart enough to figure which is which.

Wow! It's already Campaign Day 25 ...
Yet another primate is the

Orangutan

The name orangutan means “man of the forest” in Malay. They can be found in the rain forest of northern Borneo.

This peaceful, gentle, long-haired primate lives in the rainy jungles of Borneo and Sumatra. Clumsy when moving on the ground, it spends most of its time high up in the trees. At night it sleeps on little platforms which it builds from twigs and branches, constructing a new one each night. In wet or cold weather the orangutan covers itself with leaves. A voracious eater, it will sometimes spend an entire day feasting upon the fruit of a single tree. Fruit makes up more than half of its diet but it will also eat bark, leaves, eggs and young birds.

The most arboreal of all the apes, the orangutan has especially long, flexible fingers that help it to hang and swing in the trees. The orangutan has wonderful ability to use its facial muscles, particularly its big lips.

Long arms, hook-shaped hands and feet, and a heavy body enable an orangutan to swing superbly from tree to tree and walk on the branches. A very young orangutan rides about clinging to its mother’s chest but juveniles often play and romp together. Adults are quite solitary and, other than during infrequent mating encounters, an orangutan maintains and protects its own independent home range. Even when several adults are eating at the same food source there is little interaction among them. An adult male is particularly jealous of his territory and, when encroachment does occur, will become quite aggressive and noisy, shaking branches and emitting long, loud howls.

See a picture of this animal at the bottom of my page.

We've reached day 24 of my campaign ...
We’re staying big. Here is the

Indian Rhinoceros
Rhinoceros unicornia

The Indian rhinoceros lives primarily in northern India and Nepal. These massive beasts have some noticeable physical differences from their African relatives. Their segmented hide looks like a formidable coat of natural body armor. It functions a bit like one also: Flexible skin between the thicker hide "plates" allows them to shift as the rhinoceros moves.

As their Latin name Rhinoceros unicornis suggests, Indian rhinos have only one horn.

Like other rhinos, these animals have sharp hearing and a keen sense of smell. They may find one another by following the trail of scent each enormous animal leaves behind it on the landscape. An Indian rhino can move very quickly when aroused. Their charges have been clocked at 30 miles (48 kilometers) an hour. Despite their bulk, they are nimble and can jump or change direction quickly.

The Indian rhino is a grazer that travels established, tunnel-like paths through its tall-grass habitat. It grasps tall grasses with its prehensile (gripping) lip. In addition to grass, rhinos eat fruit, leaves, and sometimes farm crops. They are often around water and sometimes consume aquatic plants. These animals forage in the cooler temps of morning and afternoon to avoid exerting themselves in the debilitating midday heat. When the sun is high, they often wallow or submerge themselves in water.

The prominent horn for which these rhinos are so well known has also been their downfall. Many animals have been killed for this hard, hair-like growth, which is revered for medicinal use in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. The horn is also valued in North Africa and the Middle East as an ornamental dagger handle. There are only about 2,000 Indian rhinos left in the wild.

See a picture of this animal at the bottom of my page.

This is day 23 of my campaign ...
We’re gonna go BIG for a couple of days. Meet the

White Rhinoceros

White rhinos graze on grasses, walking with their enormous heads and squared lips lowered to the ground.

They live on Africa's grassy plains, where they sometimes gather in groups of as many as a dozen individuals. Females reproduce only every two and a half to five years. Their single calf does not live on its own until it is about three years old.

Under the hot African sun, white rhinos they take cover by lying in the shade. Rhinos are also wallowers. They find a suitable water hole and roll in its mud, coating their skin with a natural bug repellent and sun block.
.
Rhinos have sharp hearing and a keen sense of smell. They may find one another by following the trail of scent each enormous animal leaves behind it on the landscape. Their eyesight, however, is very poor; they see only about 30 feet.

White rhinos have two horns, the foremost more prominent than the other. Rhino horns grow as much as three inches (eight centimeters) a year, and have been known to grow up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) long. Females use their horns to protect their young, while males use them to battle attackers.

The prominent horn for which rhinos are so well known has been their downfall. Many animals have been killed for this hard, hair-like growth, which is revered for medicinal use in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. The horn is also valued in North Africa and the Middle East as an ornamental dagger handle.

The white rhino once roamed much of sub-Saharan Africa, but today is on the verge of extinction due to poaching fueled by these commercial uses. Only about 11,000 white rhinos survive in the wild, and many organizations are working to protect this much loved animal.

See a picture of this animal at the bottom of my page.

We have reached day 22 of my campaign ...
By popular request, today we will learn about

Meerkats

These gregarious animals are often seen in groups, and several families may live together in a large community. Squirrel-sized meerkats are mongooses famed for their upright posture. They often stand on their rear legs and gaze alertly over the southern African plains where they live. Mothers can even nurse their young while standing. All adult meerkats—male and female—pitch in to help educate the young in hunting and survival techniques.

Meerkats (also called suricates) work together in numbers. A few will typically serve as lookouts, watching the skies for birds of prey, such as hawks and eagles, that can snatch them from the ground. A sharp, shrill call is the signal for all to take cover. While a few individuals guard the group, the rest busy themselves foraging for the foods that make up their varied diet. Meerkats will eat insects, lizards, birds, and fruit. When hunting small game, they work together and communicate with purring sounds. Meerkats are good hunters and are sometimes tamed for use as rodent-catchers.

Meerkat groups utilize several different burrows and move from one to another. Each burrow is an extensive tunnel-and-room system that remains cool even under the broiling African sun. Females give birth to two to four young each year in one of the group's burrows. Fathers and siblings help to raise meerkat young, teaching them to play and forage and alerting them to the ever present danger from above. Young meerkats are so fearful of predatory birds that even airplanes will send them diving for cover.

See a picture of these cuties at the bottom of my page.

This is day 21 of my campaign ...
Emperor Penguins

Emperors are the largest of all penguins—an average bird stands some 45 inches (115 centimeters) tall. These flightless animals live on the Antarctic ice and in the frigid surrounding waters.

Penguins employ physiological adaptations and cooperative behaviors in order to deal with an incredibly harsh environment, where wind chills can reach -76°F (-60°C).

They huddle together to escape wind and conserve warmth. Individuals take turns moving to the group's protected and relatively toasty interior. Once a penguin has warmed a bit it will move to the perimeter of the group so that others can enjoy protection from the icy elements.

Emperor penguins spend the long winter on the open ice—and even breed during this harsh season. Females lay a single egg and then promptly leave it behind. They undertake an extended hunting trip that lasts some two months! Depending on the extent of the ice pack, females may need to travel some 50 miles (80 kilometers) just to reach the open ocean, where they will feed on fish, squid, and krill. At sea, emperor penguins can dive to 1,850 feet (565 meters)—deeper than any other bird—and stay under for more than 20 minutes.

Male emperors keep the newly laid eggs warm, but they do not sit on them, as many other birds do. Males stand and protect their eggs from the elements by balancing them on their feet and covering them with feathered skin known as a brood pouch. During this two-month bout of babysitting the males eat nothing and are at the mercy of the Antarctic elements.

When female penguins return to the breeding site, they bring a belly full of food that they regurgitate for the newly hatched chicks. Meanwhile, their duty done, male emperors take to the sea in search of food for themselves.

Mothers care for their young chicks and protect them with the warmth of their own brood pouches. Outside of this warm cocoon, a chick could die in just a few minutes. In December, Antarctic summer, the pack ice begins to break up and open water appears near the breeding site, just as young emperor penguins are ready to swim and fish on their own.

Check the bottom of my page to see a photo of these animals.

Today is Day 16 of my campaign ...
… and I’d like to introduce you to the …

Moose

Moose are the largest of all the deer species. Males are immediately recognizable by their huge antlers, which can spread 6 feet (1.8 meters) from end to end. Moose have long faces and muzzles that dangle over their chins. A flap of skin known as a bell sways beneath each moose's throat.

Moose are so tall that they prefer to browse higher grasses and shrubs because lowering their heads to ground level can be difficult. In winter they eat shrubs and pinecones, but they also scrape snow with their large hooves to clear areas for browsing on mosses and lichens. These hooves also act as snowshoes to support the heavy animals in soft snow and in muddy or marshy ground.

In summer, food is far more plentiful in the northern regions of North America, Europe, and Asia. When the ice melts, moose are often seen in lakes, rivers, or wetlands, feeding on aquatic plants both at and below the surface. Moose are at home in the water and, despite their staggering bulk, are good swimmers. They have been seen paddling several miles at a time, and will even submerge completely, staying under for 30 seconds or more.

Moose are similarly nimble on land. They can run up to 35 miles (56 kilometers) an hour over short distances, and trot steadily at 20 miles (32 kilometers) an hour.

Males, called bulls, bellow loudly to attract mates each September and October. The usually solitary bulls may come together at this time to battle with their antlers for mating supremacy. After mating, the two sexes go their separate ways until the following year. Though they may occasionally feed in the same grounds, they tend to ignore each other.

Females give birth to one or two calves in the spring—each weighing some 30 pounds (14 kilograms). These calves grow quickly and can outrun a person by the time they are just five days old. Young moose stay with their mothers until the following mating season.
…………….

We have a four-day weekend coming up … Presidents’ Day … and Mom will be doing child-care for the family, plus working. My blog will be posted on the CMR page #46883 with pictures of each animal placed on my home page each morning. I’ll pay you another visit on Tuesday.

Experts Disagree On Trap, Neuter, Release Program For Feral Cats:

One of a Kind Pet Rescue in Akron altered more than 1,000 feral cats in 2011, veterinarian Meg Geldhof said. The clinic typically alters 30 feral cats per session but would like to raise that to 80, she said.
The clinic's $60 feral cat package includes the surgery, trap rental, rabies vaccine, distemper shots & flea treatment.

"Eventually, hopefully, we can whittle the number (of area ferals) down 20 to 40 percent over a five-year period," Geldhof said.

Day 15 of my campaign ...
Koalas, Pandas, and now … Bambi?

White-Tailed Deer

White-tailed deer, the smallest members of the North American deer family, are found from southern Canada to South America. In the heat of summer they typically inhabit fields and meadows using clumps of broad-leaved and coniferous forests for shade. During the winter they generally keep to forests, preferring coniferous stands that provide shelter from the harsh elements.

Adult white-tails have reddish-brown coats in summer which fade to a duller grayish-brown in winter. Male deer, called bucks, are easily recognizable in the summer and fall by their prominent set of antlers, which are grown annually and fall off in the winter. Only the bucks grow antlers, which bear a number of tines, or sharp points. During the mating season, also called the rut, bucks fight over territory by using their antlers in sparring matches.

Female deer, called does, give birth to one to three young at a time, usually in May or June and after a gestation period of seven months. Young deer, called fawns, wear a reddish-brown coat with white spots that helps them blend in with the forest.

White-tailed deer are herbivores, leisurely grazing on most available plant foods. Their stomachs allow them to digest a varied diet, including leaves, twigs, fruits and nuts, grass, corn, alfalfa, and even lichens and other fungi. Occasionally venturing out in the daylight hours, white-tailed deer are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular, browsing mainly at dawn and dusk.

In the wild, white-tails, particularly the young, are preyed upon by bobcats, mountain lions, and coyotes. They use speed and agility to outrun predators, sprinting up to 30 miles (48 kilometers) per hour and leaping as high as 10 feet (3 meters) and as far as 30 feet (9 meters) in a single bound.

Although previously depleted by unrestricted hunting in the United States, strict game-management measures have helped restore the white-tailed deer population.
Photos of all featured animals are found at the bottom of my page. Check them out. They appear in reverse order. All of my animals stories may be found on the CMR page #46883.

For day 14, Valentine's Day ...
... read about two popular and lovable creatures, the Koala and the Giant Panda. Enjoy their stories and then see their pictures at the bottom of my page.

Koala

Though often called the koala "bear," this cuddly animal is not a bear at all; it is a marsupial, or pouched mammal. After giving birth, a female koala carries her baby in her pouch for about six months. When the infant emerges, it rides on its mother's back or clings to her belly, accompanying her everywhere until it is about a year old.

Koalas live in eastern Australia, where the eucalyptus trees they love are most plentiful. In fact, they rarely leave these trees, and their sharp claws and opposable digits easily keep them aloft. During the day they doze, tucked into forks or nooks in the trees, sleeping for up to 18 hours.

When not asleep a koala feeds on eucalyptus leaves, especially at night. Koalas do not drink much water and they get most of their moisture from these leaves. Each animal eats a tremendous amount for its size—about two and a half pounds (one kilogram) of leaves a day. Koalas even store snacks of leaves in pouches in their cheeks.

A special digestive system—a long gut—allows koalas to break down the tough eucalyptus leaves and remain unharmed by their poison. Koalas eat so many of these leaves that they take on a distinctive odor from their oil, reminiscent of cough drops.

These plump, fuzzy mammals were widely hunted during the 1920s and 1930s, and their populations plunged. Helped by reintroduction, they have reappeared over much of their former range, but their populations are smaller and scattered. Koalas need a lot of space—about a hundred trees per animal—a pressing problem as Australia's woodlands continue to shrink.

Come visit me, A. Q. Cherish & K. Thunder forever.

Second Valentine Animal ...
Giant Panda

The giant panda has an insatiable appetite for bamboo. A typical animal eats half the day—a full 12 out of every 24 hours. It takes 28 pounds (12.5 kilograms) of bamboo to satisfy a giant panda's daily dietary needs, and it hungrily plucks the stalks with elongated wrist bones that function rather like thumbs. Pandas will sometimes eat birds or rodents as well.

Wild pandas live only in remote, mountainous regions in central China. These high bamboo forests are cool and wet—just as pandas like it. They may climb as high as 13,000 feet (3,962 meters) to feed on higher slopes in the summer season.

Pandas are often seen eating in a relaxed sitting posture, with their hind legs stretched out before them. They may appear sedentary, but they are skilled tree-climbers and efficient swimmers.

Giant pandas are solitary. They have a highly developed sense of smell that males use to avoid each other and to find females for mating in the spring. After a five-month pregnancy, females give birth. The blind infants weigh only 5 ounces (142 grams) at birth and cannot crawl until they reach three months of age. They are born white, and develop their much loved coloring later.

There are only about 1,000 giant pandas left in the wild. Perhaps 100 pandas live in zoos, where they are always among the most popular attractions. Much of what we know about pandas comes from study of these zoo animals, because their wild cousins are so rare and elusive.

Day #13 of my campaign ...
Was your weekend filled with loved ones and lots of naps? Sure hope it was. Mom worked; that’s why my blogs on weekends are posted on the CMR page #46883 so head there each Saturday and Sunday. Gotta give the woman a break some time. It’s time to meet another amazing creature … here are

Przewalski’s Horses

Their dun-colored coat may help them blend quietly into the landscape, but their stand-out nature is as tempestuous as the winds of the Asian steppes. In the western world, they are known as Przewalski’s horses, Equus caballus przewalskii, but to the people of Mongolia, they are, and always have been, takh (TAH-kee), which means “spirited.” It is a fitting name for these strong, swift, and nimble animals – the last true wild horses on Earth.

In prehistoric times, these horses roamed widely over semi-arid, steppe grasslands and wooded areas in Western Europe, central Asia, and China. They were known to humans in these regions but never domesticated. In 1880, it was identified as a distinct equid species.

The Przewalski’s horse is an easily identified animal – it has the legs, torso, neck, and head we recognize as “horse,” but it differs from domesticated horses both on the inside and the outside. Przewalski’s horses have to forelock and a short, erect mane that is shed and regrown each year. Their head is large in proportion to their body, and while their neck is thicker than a domestic horse’s, their legs are relatively shorter. There is a genetic difference, too: Przewalski’s horses have 66 chromosomes in their DNA, but there are only 64 in domestic horses. It is a difference, but it’s such a slight one that interbreeding results in fertile offspring with 65 chromosomes. And while their behaviors are similar – social animals living in hierarchical herds – a major distinction between the two equids comes down to the meaning of one word: wild. Przwalski’s horses are extremely wary of humans.

See a photo of these beautiful creatures at the bottom of my page.

This is day 9 of my campaign ...
We’re scaling down the size of our birds for today … some of them were pretty big and scary. This lovely is familiar to many. Today’s featured animal is the

Hyancinth Macaw
Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus

Macaws are beautiful, brilliantly colored members of the parrot family.

Many macaws have vibrant plumage. The coloring is suited to life in Central and South American rain forests, with their green canopies and colorful fruits and flowers. The birds boast large, powerful beaks that easily crack nuts and seeds, while their dry, scaly tongues have a bone inside them that makes them an effective tool for tapping into fruits.

Macaws also have gripping toes that they use to latch onto branches and to grab, hold, and examine items. The birds sport graceful tails that are typically very long.

Macaws are intelligent, social birds that often gather in flocks of 10 to 30 individuals. Their loud calls, squawks, and screams echo through the forest canopy. Macaws vocalize to communicate within the flock, mark territory, and identify one another. Some species can even mimic human speech.

Flocks sleep in the trees at night, and in the morning they may fly long distances to feed on fruit, nuts, insects, and snails. Some species also eat damp soil, which may help to neutralize chemicals in their fruity diet and ease their stomachs.

Macaws typically mate for life. They not only breed with, but also share food with their mates and enjoy mutual grooming. In breeding season, mothers incubate eggs while fathers hunt and bring food back to the nest.

There are 17 species of macaws, and several are endangered. These playful birds are popular pets, and many are illegally trapped for that trade. The rain forest homes of many species are also disappearing at an alarming rate.

Hyacinth, red-fronted, and blue-throated macaws are seriously endangered.

A picture of this animal is posted at the bottom of my page. Each campaign photo will remain on my page for at least three days.

Day #8 of my campaign ...
Today we return once more to the skies … this time to see something amazing. Meet the:

California Condor

The California condor is the largest flying bird in North America. Their wings may stretch nearly 10 feet (3 meters) from tip to tip. When in flight, these huge birds glide on air currents to soar as high as a dizzying 15,000 feet (4,600 meters).

Like other vultures, condors are scavengers that feast on the carcasses of large mammals, such as cattle and deer. When a big meal is available, the birds may gorge themselves so much that they must rest for several hours before flying again.

Condors were sacred birds to the Native Americans who lived in the open spaces of western America. Today, they are best known as the subjects of a famous captive breeding program that may save them from extinction.

After decades of decline, condors neared the point of extinction in the late 1970s, when only two or three dozen birds survived. No one is sure exactly what cause or causes contributed most to this decline. Many birds died from poison ingestion and illegal egg collection, and all felt the steady loss of the open lands over which they once soared. Fossil records also show that the birds occupied only a fraction of their former range when Europeans first reached America—perhaps because of the loss of the great prehistoric herds that formerly roamed the continent.

California condors mature and reproduce slowly. They don't breed until they are between six and eight years old, and the female lays only one egg every two years. If that egg is removed, however, she will lay a second or a third. With this in mind, scientists began to collect eggs for captive incubation. They also captured wild birds for captive breeding and, when the wild population dropped below 10 individuals, all of the remaining wild condors were brought into captivity in 1987.

Through the efforts of many organizations and individuals, reintroduction of California condors began in 1992. Today about 127 birds live in the wild. Though they are protected, mortality rates are still high from accidental death. Powerlines are a particular hazard for condors, and they fare better in areas where human population density is low.

A picture of this animal is at the bottom of my page.

And on the 7th day ...
Thus far we have studies creatures with their feet on the ground … today’s animal hunts from the sky. Please meet the …

Bald Eagle

The bald eagle, with its snowy-feathered (not bald) head and white tail, is the proud national bird symbol of the United States—yet the bird was nearly wiped out there. For many decades, bald eagles were hunted for sport and for the "protection" of fishing grounds. Pesticides like DDT also wreaked havoc on eagles and other birds. These chemicals collect in fish, which make up most of the eagle's diet. They weaken the bird's eggshells and severely limited their ability to reproduce. Since DDT use was heavily restricted in 1972, eagle numbers have rebounded significantly and have been aided by reintroduction programs. The result is a wildlife success story—the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has upgraded the birds from endangered to threatened.
Though their numbers have grown in much of their range, bald eagles remain most abundant in Alaska and Canada. These powerful birds of prey use their talons to fish, but they get many of their meals by scavenging carrion or stealing the kills of other animals. (Such thievery famously prompted Ben Franklin to argue against the bird's nomination as the United State's national symbol.) They live near water and favor coasts and lakes where fish are plentiful, though they will also snare and eat small mammals.
Bald eagles are believed to mate for life. A pair constructs an enormous stick nest—one of the bird-world's biggest—high above the ground and tends to a pair of eggs each year. Immature eagles are dark, and until they are about five years old, they lack the distinctive white markings that make their parents so easy to identify. Young eagles roam great distances. Florida birds have been spotted in Michigan, and California eagles have traveled all the way to Alaska.

A picture of this animal is at the bottom of my page.

Dickens's 200th - a tale for all lifetimes
>Dickens-the satirist of his day, a social campaigner who spoke for the oppressed as well as a transformational figure in literature-remains relevant today. Writings dealt with the hypocrisy, the cruelty and the greed of his time. He used his wit as a weapon to effect change. He wrote with great compassion for the suffering of innocent and vulnerable children. With Great Expectations, he asks: How long can a society ignore the nefarious, corrupt or compromised sources of its wealth?

*A Tale of Two Cities (1859):"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us"
*Great Expectations (1860): "Once for all; I knew to my sorrow, often and often, if not always, that I loved against reason, against promise, against peace, against hope, against happiness, against all discouragement that could be. Once for all; I loved none the less because I knew it."
"Heaven knows we need never be ashamed of our tears, for they are rain upon the blinding dust of earth, overlying our hard hearts. I was better after I had cried, than before--more sorry, more aware of my own ingratitude, more gentle.”

Still on the campaign trail ... Day 6 ...
Yesterday’s featured big cat, the Snow Leopard, proved quite popular and was well-received. Today we learn about yet another favorite “big kitty” …

Cheetah

The cheetah is the world's fastest land mammal. With acceleration that would leave most automobiles in the dust, a cheetah can go from 0 to 60 miles (96 kilometers) an hour in only three seconds. These big cats are quite nimble at high speed and can make quick and sudden turns in pursuit of prey.

Before unleashing their speed, cheetahs use exceptionally keen eyesight to scan their grassland environment for signs of prey—especially antelope and hares. This big cat is a daylight hunter that benefits from stealthy movement and a distinctive spotted coat that allows it to blend easily into high, dry grasses.

When the moment is right a cheetah will sprint after its quarry and attempt to knock it down. Such chases cost the hunter a tremendous amount of energy and are usually over in less than a minute. If successful, the cheetah will often drag its kill to a shady hiding place to protect it from opportunistic animals that sometimes steal a kill before the cheetah can eat. Cheetahs need only drink once every three to four days.

Female cheetahs typically have a litter of three cubs and live with them for one and a half to two years. Young cubs spend their first year learning from their mother and practicing hunting techniques with playful games. Male cheetahs live alone or in small groups, often with their littermates.

Most wild cheetahs are found in eastern and southwestern Africa. Perhaps only 7,000 to 10,000 of these big cats remain, and those are under pressure as the wide-open grasslands they favor are disappearing at the hands of human settlers.

The cheetah has been tamed for hunting for almost 5000 years.

A picture of this animal is posted at the bottom of my page. Each campaign photo will remain on my page for at least three days. If you somehow did not receive a report on one of these lovely creatures, you can find them on the CMR page #46883. You may need to search back a bit, but … happy hunting. =^..^=

Campaign day 5 ...
Snow Leopard

These rare, beautiful gray leopards live in the mountains of Central Asia. They are insulated by thick hair, and their wide, fur-covered feet act as natural snowshoes. Snow leopards have powerful legs and are tremendous leapers, able to jump as far as 50 feet (15 meters). They use their long tails for balance and as blankets to cover sensitive body parts against the severe mountain chill.

Snow leopards prey upon the blue sheep (bharal) of Tibet and the Himalaya, as well as the mountain ibex found over most of the rest of their range. Though these powerful predators can kill animals three times their weight, they also eat smaller fare, such as marmots, hares, and game birds.

One Indian snow leopard, protected and observed in a national park, is reported to have consumed five blue sheep, nine Tibetan woolly hares, twenty-five marmots, five domestic goats, one domestic sheep, and fifteen birds in a single year.

As these numbers indicate, snow leopards sometimes have a taste for domestic animals, which has led to killings of the big cats by herders.

These endangered cats appear to be in dramatic decline because of such killings, and due to poaching driven by illegal trades in pelts and in body parts used for traditional Chinese medicine. Vanishing habitat and the decline of the cats' large mammal prey are also contributing factors.

A photo of this animal is at the bottom of my page. Take a look.

Patches and Frisky are very happy and want their family to know this. They would love to send them a special gift on Saturday, February 4th, 2012. 3321 ~IMPORTANT CARE FOR YOUR CAT~ Finale
EUGENE, OREGON WEATHER REPORT:
The temperature was high 53 & low was 43 this morning, now it's 50 with humidity 82% & wind is 10 MPH S. Monday's suppose to be Showers & High 49.

Important Care for Your Cat:
Besides taking care of the coat, the nails also require a degree of care. You can regularly trim the toes. It is natural for cats to want to scratch but by keeping the toes well clipped, you will find that major damages on the household items that you value are kept at bay. You should however ensure that you do not end up declawing your cat since it will be a great injustice. Declawing is basically maiming your cat & should be avoided at all times.

The ears & eyes of your cat need to be taken care of as well. They are very sensitive parts of the body & you will therefore need to handle them gently & softly if at all you are to achieve your overall mission. You can for instance get rid of stains from the eyes with the help of a cotton swab that is soft & cleaning solutions designed solely for cats. Cleaning the ears will help keep infections that come as a result of accumulated wax at bay.

Bathing your cat is not all that necessary unless of course it has stepped on poison or other agents that can be harmful. The bathing can also be necessitated by maggot infestations especially for cats which spend long periods outdoors.

After mom did her daily chores this morning she went in the back yard & cleaned the litterbox on the patio, any droppings on the ground then cleaned the big 5X5 sand~litterbox. When mom was done, she took us inside kitties out in the front yard for about 10 minutes then we got our treats when we came back inside then ate some kibbles then it was nap time.

Hi Jim-Bob
Thanks for coming to congratulate me on my COTD. I can't believe it's been 8 years since I took that trip across the Bridge in the arms of big brother Joe (he used to be that cute little redhead in my gallery). Neither can my family! Just the other day I was checking on them when I saw Joe showing a friend my pictures and my urn, telling her what a great cat I was. I grinned from ear to ear! I love it here at the Bridge with all my Angel friends, but it is so nice to know my humans still love me, too! -- Angel Smokey

From Duckie’s Desk: Have you met Angel Mittens, #193887? Mittens was found in a box of kittens at a garage sale. This beautiful orange ball of fur grabbed hold of her future forever Mom’s heart and never turned loose. Mittens was always a playful kitty and loved to chase a laser pointer and chase the family Miniature Schnauzer. Mittens formed a special bond with her family and was a very happy kitty. When she crossed the beautiful Rainbow Bridge she went to her new home to wait for her family until they could be reunited one day. Mittens is very happy and wants her family to know this. She would love to send them a special gift on Saturday, January 28th, 2012. Mittens would love to honor her family with the gift of her Cat of the Day Badge. ♥ OUR NAMES!!! ♥ Part 8
`
FROM OLDEST TO YOUNGEST!!!
♥ WHYSKRS 10378: Mom named him and dad and Anita agreed with the name as it was so fitting. Go look at his baby picture!!!! He had long beautiful whiskers when he was a kitten that stood out. He is a recued cat from a local grocery store in the truck loading zone. He & his littermates were left in the trucking lane in a box when they were tiny kittens.. Store employees took his siblings & he was the only one left so Anita took him home with her then she called mom. He likes to paw at dad or mom when he wants something. He also likes pawing at the kitchen door, mostly in the wee hours as it wakes mom up which he wanted food.
♥ PAPPOOSE 10366: HEY, THAT’S ME!!! Again, mom was at Anita's & they were in her laundry room. I was a kitten lying in a bed Anita fixed up for me. Mom knelt down to rub my tummy. Then mom got up and Anita wanted to give me a name. She wanted me to have an Indian name, which started with a “W” (mom doesn’t recall what it was), but mom said “No”. Mom suggested “Pappoose”, but then it happened;. I looked up and meowed. “That's it!!!” Mom & Anita says “that will be her name”. I eventually ended up at my now mom’s back yard. I hung around out there for awhile & ate then I would leave. I came back again & mom opened the back door so I went in checking things out. I did this a couple different times before I was told I was staying. Rhoamin took me in like a father & played with me. He even gave me baths. I still like playing with him!!!
♥ NeuBee 123633: This kitty showed up in our back yard in Dec 2008 & looked underweight. She hung out with Baby, Sausha & Teakee for some time. Mom worked at her til she let mom pet her then about Jan/Feb 2009 NeuBee moved closer to the house & on the patio with the rest of the kitties. Mom had no idea what to name her cuz she didn’t know what sex it was. She finally came up with NeuBee (as she was new to our family) & it was fitting for a girl or boy. She seen Sylvester & absolutely fell in love with him. She never let him out of her sight & they always cuddled together as they still cuddle & hang out together. Mom & dad is thrilled with seeing them in love as they never seen kitties have a love like that before.
