How We Met

We lost our Siamese at 8 years to kidney failure. We went to a local cat show and saw a cat that looked just like her. Instead of Siamese, she was Tonkinese. We had never heard of the breed, but we got to know the breeder. Wendy had one litter of kittens and was available for adoption when her kittens all went to their new homes. She was two years old when we brought her home.

January 31 ~ Angel Mallow's last word ~
Wow, the last day of my campaign is here! It looked for a while there like the CC Gremlins were gonna try and keep me off the Throne, not to mention from postin’ my final campaign blog, but we pulled it off! Whew! I was gonna do a wrap-up speech today, but then I realized I just might have one last Lost & Found story to tell. It’s about our Angel Smokey and the second time Big Bro Joe saved his life.

One day when Smokey was about 10, he didn’t come in for supper. Which was unusual. And he wasn’t there in the mornin’, either. OR when the kids got home from school.

The kids and the pawrents looked all over, Mom dismantled the woodpile in the back yard, they checked the shed to make sure he didn’t get locked in and checked every hidin’ place they could think of. They walked around the neighbourhood but no sign of Smokey. Everyone was worried, but Big Bro Joe was a young man on a mission! As soon as he came home from school, never mind playin’ or watchin’ TV, he was out lookin’ for his Smokey!

The third day, Joe came runnin’ into the house “I found Smokey!” Mom went out and sure enough there he was, tucked into a little cubby that the humans didn’t even realize existed, where two sections of fence overlapped right at the end of the neighbours’ hedge. Smokey wasn’t stuck, he could come out
by himself but wouldn’t. When Mom reached to touch him, he growled at her! So Dad came out with his big coat and leather gloves, Mom held a baby quilt while Dad reached into the cubby & pulled out Smokey, who still had some fight in him but not very much. Dad plopped Smokey into the blanket, Mom wrapped him up tight and they were off to the vet.

Turned out that Smokey had a really nasty abscess and needed surgery right away. Poor guy had crawled into that little hidey spot to be safe while he sat at the foot of the Rainbow Bridge and waited for the Angels. But thanks to Big Bro Joe it wasn’t time for that yet.

After Smokey did cross and I came to live with the family, one of the things he came back to teach me was that if ya don’t feel right, stick close to the humans. And I listened.

I wanna take this time to say thanks to all of you who have come along on my campaign with me. Thanks for the comments, the support, the laughs, the goodies and of course the votes. I have some fun things planned for my time in the Castle in February, and I hope you’ll enjoy ‘em.

Let’s all give a round of thanks to King Miles for his great reign as King of January!

Come tomorrow: It’s a Marshmallow World!!

Marmie: FOUND

Since late July 2014, Mike & Jane Lille of Surrey England had been noticin’ a stray orange cat. They first saw it huntin’ in a wide freeway median and by mid-September the kitty had worked its way into their neighbourhood but would run away anytime the Lilles tried to get near. They put out food and slowly it came closer to their house, under their van and then into their garage … then finally into the house. It wasn’t till early November that the Lilles finally were able to take the kitty to the vet to be checked out. The vet scanned for a microchip, found one, and it turns out this kitty was Tracy Brewster’s missing Marmalade! Looks like the no-good ex had driven about 60 miles along the freeway and then pulled over to put Marmalade out in the median, where he was probably expected to go runnin’ out into traffic and come to a bad end. But Marmie got the last laugh there, the pampered senior indoor cat survived almost 4 months!

A very happy Tracy Brewster posted this message to her faithful Marmie Army on November 19th 2014:

“Marmie was found in Surrey and had been there from day one. I would never of found him had he not been chipped. Marmie has had the most horrendous time. He has been fending for himself up until the last 2 weeks, he was seen in a central reservation with motorways each side of him, after a few days of him going missing, my baby was out on his own for over three-and-a-half months, my cat was a house cat and I would of never believed he could of looked after himself but he did, he is ok and he slept with me all last night.”

The Lille’s wrote to Tracy “Seeing you reunited with him was wonderful. We had no idea of Marmie’s story and the search for him. It took us totally by surprise! …. We are so pleased to have ended your nightmare and wish you both all the best.”

Sadly, when Tracy took Marmie to be checked out they found that he had developed kidney failure and after 11 months back in the arms of his devoted Mum he crossed the Bridge October 23, 2015. The Find Marmie FB page continues in his honour, devoted to helpin’ lost pets get back home.

The final word hasta go to Marmie’s Mum “ .. if you have lost your cat never ever give up and do whatever you can to find them, go that bit further & it will pay off & if not at least you can say you have done everything possible for your baby.”

Marmie: LOST!!

This story’s a two parter to round out my campaign. It happened in 2014 in England, and my family had a front-row seat to watch it unfold because the kitty involved usedta be one of our compadres on a site called ShowmeCats.

It all started with a great big orange fluffy kitty named Marmalade, who had been with his special person Tracy Brewster of Maidstone, Kent for 13 years. Marmie, as Tracy called him, was his Mom’s pampered baby and had been with her longer than her current husband. The husband wasn’t current for long, as it happens, things went bad and the couple separated. Then on July 21, 2014 Marmie vanished from a walk in the enclosed yard of his house.

Tracy was frantic, and all the more so when it came out that her ex was responsible for Marmie’s disappearance. He appeared in court charged with taking the kitty, was found guilty but spitefully refused to say anything about Marmie’s whereabouts other than that he had turned him loose “somewhere”.

Tracy did not take this lyin’ down, she actually quit her job and devoted herself to searching for Marmalade full-time. Soon she had a group of supporters she called "Marmie’s Army", who helped distribute posters, flyers and publicize Marmie’s cause through media interviews and a FB group called "Find Marmie". Tracy told TV and newspapers:

“We are desperate to find Marmie – a friendly, long haired ginger cat who has been stolen and dumped somewhere. Marmalade is a beautiful, long haired, light ginger neutered male cat. He has a freckled right eye and a bald lower belly. He is microchipped. He is totally and utterly adored by his mum who is desperate and devastated without him .”

Tracy also had a Twitter feed and the “Find Marmie” FB page soon had upwards of 2,400 followers. The UK news media took Marmalade to heart and his story was followed nationwide. An article on Page 3 of the London Daily Telegraph summed up:

“Rarely has the search for a cat been carried out with such passion and heroic persistence. The story has been widely featured in the press.”

So does the Marmie Army come through? Ya just hafta wait till tomorrow.

Same CAT-time, same CAT-Channel!

In 2000, a girl named Jackie Sharp was goin’ to college at Santa Rosa Junior College in Petaluma California. It was her first year, with all kindsa new experiences and a whole lotta stress. Her 3 year old kitty named Dallas was with her through good times and bad.

Then Dallas disappeared into a nearby creek.

'It was horrible,' Jackie said. 'I was looking everywhere for him. It was very sad. I loved that cat. At the end of the day I would come home and he would just curl up on my lap and purr. He was always there for me. He got me through a lot.'

Years went by, Jackie graduated and moved away but she always kept pictures of her pal Dallas and occasionally stopped to think of him and to wonder what happened.

Then, in spring of 2013, at the same creek where Dallas had disappeared in 2000 a man found a stray kitty who was in bad shape. He took the kitty to Laurie Atwood, who feeds some of the feral cats living by the creek.

Laurie took the kitty to the emergency vet clinic, where he was checked over and scanned for a microchip. He had one, and very shortly a stunned Jackie Sharp got a call from the VCA Animal Care Centre in Rohnert Park, CA, telling her that they had her cat. It took her a while to realize they were talking about Dallas.

'I was in shock,' said Jackie, by then 34. 'It has been 13 years. I figured he had found a new home or was gone by now. It was so amazing, he was the coolest cat ever and I missed him so much.'

Dallas was given life-saving treatment, put on a feeding tube and given a blood transfusion. Dr. Robin Schaffner, the emergency vet who treated him said that the cat was close to dying and would probably have been put down if they hadn’t found the microchip.

'He was completely dehydrated and emaciated. He probably would have passed away within hours without aggressive treatment. The microchip saved his life,' Dr Shaffner said.

It was a long haul for Dallas, but he recovered and the happy day came that Jackie was able to take him home. She told reporters that Dallas recognised her the moment he entered.

'He stared at me, then he climbed up into my lap and started to purr,' she said. 'I always loved his eyes with those grey specks in them. Once I saw his eyes, I knew it was him. He’s a fighter. If he can make it through living in a creek for 13 years, he can make it through anything.'

If you think this story sounds familiar, it’s because Queens Maggie & Angel Ginger told it in their campaign a few months back. But it is so good I just hafta tell it too!

In 1949 the Smith family were getting’ ready to move from St. Petersburg, Florida all the way out to California! They were worried how their kitty Tom would handle such a long trip and because they’d once read that cats often get more attached to a place than to people, they were delighted when they saw that Tom seemed to like the man who bought their house, Robert Hanson.

The Smiths thought that it would be best for Tom to not have his normal routines interrupted and made the decision to leave him with Mr. Hanson. They were sad to leave Tom behind, but relieved that he would have a good home. Over and over they told themselves that done the right thing.

Two weeks later after they moved into their new home in San Gabriel, the Smiths got a letter from Robert Hanson with the news that Tom had run away. They felt awful that because they had done what they thought was best for Tom, now he had run off and would probably come to a sad end.

Then, on an August afternoon on 1951, two years and six weeks after their move to California, Mrs. Smith heard a cat wailing in her yard. The noise was drivin’ them up the wall, and Mr. Smith went outside to chase the intruder out of the yard. Imagine his amazement when the cat ran toward him and leaped into his arms! It took him only a moment to recognize their old friend Tom.

Mrs. Smith was more skeptical. After all, Tom was a sleek, well-fed handsome feline while THIS kitty was scraggly, skinny, worn, frazzled and so weak that it collapsed on the kitchen floor when Mr. Smith brought it into the house. Its fur was bleached by the sun and had come out in handfuls. Its paws were bloody and covered in scabs.

Then Mrs. Smith thought of a sure test. They had raised their Tom on baby food, and he had a real “thing” for Pablum. She went to the store and bought some, then put a saucer of it on the floor. Well, battered and beaten though he was, the cat got to his feet and dived into the baby food right up to his whiskers. The Smiths were now convinced that their old Tom had found his way to their home in San Gabriel, California, all the way from St. Petersburg, Florida-way across the continent and across 2,500 miles of unfamiliar terrain!

Guess Tom had been more attached to his people than they could have ever imagined!

It has been a very rough month for our CC friends, and today I wanna start out with a tribute to our King of July 2015, the amazing Montgomery George Brown. I remember my family first met Monty back in summer or 2011 when he was diagnosed with cancer and the vet said he had maybe 6 months left with us. Well, that was 4 ½ years ago and Monty has amazed us again and again, but he has reached the end of his journey and is makin’ his trip to the Bridge today. I and all the CC Angels will be there to meet him with a hero’s welcome!

Now, today’s story:

No one wants an apartment fire, especially not when you’re a human with a kitty. Who more than likely will be under the bed at the first hint of smoke, not to mention those noisy alarms!

Anyway, the worst case scenario happened to Megan Martin in July of 2014 when there was a huge fire at her condo complex in Edmonton, Alberta Canada. The fire caused over 10 million bucks in damages and left 400 humans without homes. Megan was one of them.

As if all that wasn’t bad enough, Megan’s kitty Harmony was in the building when the fire happened and when she got the all-clear to go gather her belongings, she couldn’t find Harmony anywhere!

Megan went back to the building complex time after time to look for Harmony and called for help from SAFE Team Rescue, who she had originally adopted Harmony from. The rescue group helped by puttin’ up flyers and leavin’ food out so Harmony wouldn’t go hungry. But despite the everyone’s best efforts, with no sign of Harmony everyone began to fear the worst.

“It’s almost like losing a child,” Martin told CBC News. “You don’t think that your pets are going to be that close to you, but it was very heartbreaking.”

But four months after the fire, with demolition and rebuilding still goin’ on a demolition worker who was back at the condo building found Harmony alive! She was hidin’ in the wall of a third-floor unit, one floor down from Megan’s condo.

Due to SAFE Team Rescue’s efforts, the workers knew who to call about the cat. The rescue organization happily contacted Megan and reunited her with her Harmony.

Harmony had lost way too much weight, and understandably she was pretty jumpy & nervous at first, but she was happy to be with her human again, safe and receiving all the love—and food—that any pet could ask for.

Megan says that she doesn’t know how Harmony survived the fire or four months with very little food or water, but she is thrilled to have her girl safely back at home.

Our Dad grew up with his Dad in the Royal Canadian Air Force, and he usedta delight in tellin’ how when his family unpacked from one of their many moves, they found a moldy oldy half-eaten sandwich in one of the boxes. But when the Barth family of Virginia opened the boxes after a move to Hawaii in September 2014, they found not a sandwich, but their missing kitty!!

Don’t worry, the kitty’s okay! This is our happy place after all.

When everything was packed & ready for the big move, the Barths couldn’t find their kitty Mee Moowe! They postponed leaving for three days lookin’ for Mee Moowe but when she didn’t appear, they reluctantly hadda go ahead with the move. Everyone was devastated to leave behind the gray, short-haired cat had been with the family for their 10 year old daughter’s whole life!

But 36 days later when all the boxes were unloaded at their new house on the island of Maui, the Barths were shocked to hear a faint meow coming from one of the boxes! Well, you know us felines and our boxes, looks like Mee Moowe had crawled inside to explore and accidentally gotten sealed up! When she was finally freed, Mee Moowe had lost half her body weight and according to the vet, she was showin’ all the typical symptoms of starvation.

Unfortunately, the vet also told the Barths that Hawaii’s strict health rules for pets brought into the state meant that poor Mee Moowe hadda spend more three more months away from them, in quarantine because she hadn’t had her shots before the trip.

I somehow think Mee Moowe woulda MUCH rather had the (whisper) s-h-o-t-s than make the trip the way she did!

BONUS STORY:

I was mentionin’ to A. K. Pushkin one day that I didn’t have any Lost & Found stories from Ireland & I figured that must mean that the Irish took better care of their kitties. Well, he found me a story that happened not long ago to a kitty named Lilou who belonged to a guy named Eric Biec of North County Dublin. One day Lilou wandered down to the Malahide DART station and got on the 10:30 train to Dublin City Centre!

A passenger handed her over to station staff and word went out by way of the media and Twitter. Thanks to hundreds of tweets and retweets, worried Dad Eric was reunited with his wanderin’ kitty!

Lilou has made history by bein’ the very first animal to be issued with her very own rail card! Corporate Communications Manager at Iarnród Éireann Barry Kenny says

“Just in the off chance that she does travel again with us, we are going to issue her with her own smart card for the future, so that if she does decide to take the DART again she will have a valid ticket.”

Jan 24th Angel Sunday ~ Angel Smokey ~
Don’t ask my brother Angel Smokey “were you born in a barn?”, because he’ll say YES and be proud of it! Here’s his story:

“One day a family came to visit, bringing four little humans. We kittens weren't afraid, we let them pet us and love us and pick us up!

“When the visit was over I was in the back seat of the car with those kids on my way to my new forever home! I had never lived in a house before, there were all kinds of new experiences for me and it was the beginning of a very wonderful life together. I’m proud to say that I helped to raise those kids into grown humans who respect and love animals!

“My favourite was Big Bro Joe, and here’s part of the reason. When I was about 2 years old the humans noticed I was having trouble peeing. Dad took me straight to the vet and the news was that I had a urinary blockage and needed surgery right away or I would die. Mom & Dad had four little kids and not a lot of money, and when he heard how much the surgery would cost Dad thought there was no choice but to send me over the Bridge. After all, he said, who knew how long a cat might live anyway?

“Dad came home to tell Mom and the kids so they could have a chance to say goodbye. Well, Big Bro Joe who was six years old broke into tears. I was his special friend who slept with him every night and he didn’t want me to go over the Bridge! He pleaded “You can have all the money in my bank account, just please save Smokey”. Dad’s heart was really touched and he called the vet, who said there was one procedure they could do that cost a lot less, in fact about the same as it would have cost to send me over the Bridge. The problem was that it could only fix the problem this one time, it might not stay fixed for long, and they’d have to change my food for the rest of my life if there was any hope of my never getting another blockage.

“Everyone said DO IT!! So they did, and soon I was home and doing great. Mom & Dad found a store brand with an acceptable ash content and for the rest of my life Dad bought it by the case whenever it came on sale.”

The rest of Angel Smokey’s life turned out to be another 15 years, and when his time did come to cross the Bridge it was Big Bro Joe who held him as he started on his way.

Today I have a coupla very lucky kitties to tell ya about, and wouldja believe they are both named Charlie?

Charlie #1 showed up at Fort Wayne Indiana Animal Care and Control on April 21st, 2014. Nothin’ so much unusual there. Not even so unusual that Charlie was 10 years old. But after the shelter scanned Charlie for a microchip and found one identifyin’ Virginia Fryback as his owner, things got unusual.

Ms. Fryback was shocked because Charlie had disappeared five years earlier and she thought she'd never see him again! She thanks the veterinarian who convinced her to get the microchip way back when Charlie was a kitten.

Charlie’d better thank that vet, too. A FWACC spokesperson told reporters “The chip has likely saved Charlie’s life because most people choose to adopt a much younger cat.”
>>>>>>
Charlie #2 is from way over in Stubbington, Hampshire, England. He’s a black & white guy who lived with Jo and Ade Haigh from 7 weeks old until the day in 2006 when he went outside and didn’t come back in. His people searched the area, put up “lost” posters and contacted all the local vets, but no Charlie!

Since then the Haighs moved more than two miles away but one day in October 2012 Mrs. Haigh was back in the old neighbourhood to look a bungalow her mother was thinkin’ about buyin’ when she, her mother and sister noticed a cat sittin’ on a wall outside of a house.

“I was immediately 99.9 per cent sure it was Charlie.” She said. “He was a lot skinnier but came straight over to me and responded to his name.

“We went and spoke to the man who lived there and he told me he had been feeding Charlie for about two and a half years.”

To the vet the kitty went to scan for a microchip, and he was definitely the long-lost Charlie!

A few things besides the address have changed since Charlie disappeared in 2006. The family now included 13 month old twins, two other cats and two dogs. But Charlie’s Mom said that even at 16 years old, Charlie was settlin’ in and takin’ even the twins in stride.

She also said that she’s so happy to have Charlie back that she’s scared to let him out of the house again.

I think that’s just as well!

It started one night in spring of 2014 when Ann Bosche of Lucedale, Mississippi was out walkin’ her d-o-g and found a kitty in her front yard. “We get several dogs and cats dropped off in this neighborhood so I figured this was another one,” Ann to reporters. “What came out from under that bush was a large, beautiful cat with a white tip on his tail. I said, ‘Aren’t you a fancy thing?”

And so she started to call him Mr. Fancy. He stuck around for a month, comin’ to Ann’s house every day for food and it was more than enough time for her to fall hard for him. But she & her husband already had a dog and two cats and he wanted to take this one to the local shelter. So Ann reluctantly put Mr. Fancy in a kitty carrier and “ … dropped him off and an attendant took him to the back where the cages are. When he brought me my carrier, he said that the cat was back there banging his head against the iron cage door. I cried the five miles back to my house.”

Ann kept checkin’ the shelter’s website, hopin’ to find updates on Mr. Fancy but never did see any. She hoped that meant someone had adopted him right away. But soon she found out that he had escaped from the shelter just 20 minutes after she’d left him there. She felt awful!

Then, early one morning about a month after she had last seen Mr. Fancy, Ann woke up to the sound of her husband talking to someone in the kitchen. She got up to see what the heck was goin’ on.

“I looked at the clock and wondered who was at my house at 5:30am,” she said. “I got up to see and what I found was nothing short of a miracle. I saw a cat, sitting at my husband’s feet, talking to him … and when he flipped his tail around, there was the white tip. I started crying and quietly said ‘Oh my baby, Hi Fancy.’ He turned, saw me and ran to me, talking and squealing the whole way.”

Well, there was no WAY her husband could argue with that! “This cat spent a month traveling along busy streets, rail road lines, and rough neighborhoods trying to find me,” Ann said. “I think he had a guardian angel looking out for him, directing him back to my house. I love him so much and feel we were meant to be together. He belongs here. Mr. Fancy will never want for a home, food or love again.”

I gotta thank my pal Toby for this story that comes outta Bennington, Mass. It’s about a kitty named “Monster Cat” who belonged to a lady named Karen Halvorsen and would always share a special spot on her pillow. They were separated on Oct. 28, 2010, the one time Monster Cat was allowed to go outside.

So began a three-year ordeal that consumed much of Halvorsen’s life. She placed classified ads regularly in the Bennington Banner and when she would go to check out a lead she always took a bit of Monster Cat's hair from his pillow. She would also try to lure him in with familiar noises, like the sound of a food dish bein’ filled.

People told Halvorsen she was crazy, to get a new cat and move on with her life. "I couldn't live not knowing," she said. She could not have given up on him anymore than she could have forgotten one of her children.

Halvorsen reunited at least one other pet owner with their cat during her search, and she adopted a third cat, "Scooby," which someone had brought to her thinking it was the lost Monster Cat.

Ultimately it was Facebook and a rescue group that led to Monster Cat's homecoming in October 2013, after three long years.

A kitty fittin’ Monster Cat's description was bein’ fed by some people who saw his picture in the newspaper ads and used Facebook's "tag" function to notify Kaila Drosehn, rescue manager for Northern Berkshire Cat Rescue, who came to check things out.

The kitty was in such bad shape that Drosehn didn’t call Ms. Halvorsen for a few weeks because she did not know if he would live. Meanwhile, she paid for his vet treatments because "I had a white cat that somebody poisoned, so I had a soft spot for him,"

When Ms. Halvorsen first drove to the shelter to take a look she wasn’t sure if this sick, battered kitty was her Monster Cat. The second time, she brought Monster Cat's pillow. She broke into tears when the he recognized his old sleeping pillow and then his owner.

The plan had been to let the kitty recuperate for a few more days but Halvorsen could not bear to part with him again and so took him home, where he continued to get better. Even though he was eatin’ more and getting’ used to his house mates, he still showed the marks of a hard three years.

Halvorsen paid for a second classified ad to run after Monster Cat was found. It reads in part, "I would like to thank all of the people who cared, prayed, & kept their eyes open for him!"

Okay, you kitties know that I am a Siberian, right? My good pal K. Bennie tells me that in the language of my furfathers my name translates to “Zefir”. That’s pronounced like a worried Frenchman “ze FEAR!” Oh, I do gotta love that language!

Anyway, where I am goin’ with all this is that I hadda roar my Harley ALL the way to Russia to pick up this next story for ya. Yekaterinburg, to be exact. Where in November 2014, some workers laid new concrete pavement outside an apartment block. The humans who lived in the apartment soon noticed there was another problem with this new pavement. It … well, it kinda meowed!

I kid you not. It would appear that when they laid out the new pavement, there was a little teeny space. You KNOW how we felines love our little crawly spaces, and it WAS November, and a kitty did what kitties do. And was still hunkered in there when the concrete was poured!

Neighbours heard the mewing from the pavement and desperately tried to contact those in charge. Resident Ramiro Sokolov said: "I and some of the other neighbours rang the council but they said they weren't to blame and passed us onto the works office. They said they weren't to blame either, and had subcontracted it out to a private company.

"When we traced them, they also said they couldn't help as they needed the council's permission to dig the pavement up again. But then we couldn't find in the council exactly who should authorise permission – at least in time to save the animal.”

By this time, 10 days had gone by and the mews were becoming weaker. The group of neighbours decided to bypass the red tape & get the kitty out their very own selves. And after about 5 hours of sledgehammerin’ the new concrete, they eventually got to the kitty who was hungry, dehydrated, but otherwise unharmed.

According to the UK’s Daily Mirror the owner said:

“I had lost her 10 days ago, I didn’t know where she was and it’s great to have her back. I’m really grateful to all those people who got involved, and I have no idea how she ended up in the space under the walkway. I assume she must have been looking for mice.”

The Hairballz Rainbow Riders & I have duly delivered a case of vodka to Ramiro and his band of hero humans. Block pawty in Yekatarinburg!

Here I am again, CC’s own little gray & white Scheherazade! I’m sure glad I don’t hafta do this for 1001 Arabian Nights, mol, though I’m sure the stories are out there!

This one comes by way of the KC Pet Project in Kansas City MO, and it’s about how they helped a tomcat who’d been missin’ from his special person for 7 long years!

The kitty’s name is Lutece, and he belonged to Franc, an Executive Chef in Kansas City. Lutece disappeared from his owner during a move back in 2008. He never returned home, even with Franc going back over and over again for several months to search for him. But in May 2015 someone turned a stray tomcat with an injured paw in to KC Pet Project. They scanned for a microchip and found one.

“We weren’t able to reach anyone at the phone numbers listed for him,” rescue workers said “but Franc had listed a friend as an emergency contact for his cat’s microchip registration who help us get in touch with him.”

When Franc, who is from France, saw Lutèce he began speaking to him in French as he did so long ago. Lutèce, who had been a very quiet kitty in the shelter, immediately began meowing back loudly and extending his paw to Franc through the kennel door. The rescue workers said their hearts just melted!

“For a kitty to be perceived as a community cat for many years to turn out to be an owned kitty and be microchipped for all this time is pretty cool. It's spectacular,” said Stephanie Bell, with KC Pet Project.

“It's a miracle that this was happening,” said happy catdad Franc.

And Lutece? He didn’t have too much to say except “youch”. See, Franc decided it was about time to get his pal neutered, and he had KC Pet Project take care of that right away.

Those kitties in England sure do get themselves in some situations! This story comes from Cornwall, and it’s about a kitty named Woosie who wandered off from home and found himself livin’ the feline dream.

In 2011 Woosie was four years old and belonged to a couple named Helen & Philip Johns, and he lived your normal average feline life much like Yours Truly did for my years on earth. Woosie was allowed to go adventuring in the yard & would always return to his comfy house. Until the day he didn’t. And his humans began to worry and wonder.

But while his people worried, Woosie was livin’ the high life. Not long after he vanished from his home, he showed up at the Ginsters pasty factory 33 miles away! How he got there is anyone’s guess, but the best guess is that he mighta slipped inside a delivery truck or in another vehicle going to the area.

Now in case ya thought I made a typo back there, a pasty is a special kind of meat pie that Cornwall is well known for. They look kinda like calzones and they’re made of beef, kidney, chicken, bacon, all the things that kitties love!

Anyway, workers at the plant quickly took to the kitty and dubbed him “George”. They kept him around, feedin’ him on scraps of the delectable pastys and sandwiches, and even allowed him free reign of the office during the day. In return, “George” would meet workers outside every morning. But the adventure came to an end early in February 2014 when workers decided to take their mascot to be checked out at the local vets.

The vet scanned for a microchip, and Woosie returned to his home – considerably fatter than when he left, mol. The Johns said they were “gobsmacked” when they received the call from the vet.

“He came home on Tuesday evening, came straight into the house and just stretched out in the chair as if nothing had happened,” Mrs. Johns said. “He’s like Lord Muck. It’s surreal. He’s unfazed by it.”

Think Woosie might be purrsuaded to use his connections to score us a case of pastys?

Jan 17th Angel Sunday ~ Angel Jezebel ~
Angel Jezebel is the quietest of our family’s Angels, but she’s a very important member of the family and she has had quite a life!

Jezebel was born in the outskirts of Belleville, Ontario, where a very nice lady found her whole fur family just after a cold spell in November 1967. And I DO mean “cold spell”, we are talkin’ Southern Ontario here! For four days in the middle of that November it stayed pretty much below freezing and went as low as 6 degrees F. With 5 inches of snow on the ground and winds gusting up to 40 mph, Jezebel & her siblings would have been about 4 weeks old.

The nice lady took the kitty family in and cared for them, but the exposure had already cost Jezebel an outer ear & toes on one foot , plus an eye infection left her with a permanent bald patch around one eye. As if that wasn’t enough hardship in the kittens’ 8 short weeks on this earth, early in December their fur mom was killed on the road.

About this time, my Mom was a little girl who wanted another kitty very badly, a year and a half after losin’ her Angel Pierre. Angel Granddad had felt so bad about Pierre that he wasn’t ready to care about another kitty yet, but he cared about my Mom and one night after supper she went downstairs to find Angel Granddad washin’ down Angel Pierre’s old litter box. When she asked why, Angel Granddad said gruffly “if we’re going to have another cat, it’s going to need a litter box”. Well, Mom’s heart leaped and that very night she & Angel Granddad drove off to check out the ad the nice lady had placed for the orphan kittens.

When Mom laid eyes on the ball of tortoiseshell fluff that was Jezebel, she thought this was the most beautiful kitty that could ever be. It was the beginning of 12 ½ years together that included many moves, including a cross-country flight. Jezebel was one pampered kitty, Mom had a leash for her and brushed her almost every day. Jezebel was with Mom through her teenage years, early marriage and (shudder) the first two human kittens before it came time to say goodbye, much too soon.

Mom says that in a lot of ways, Moji Blackbear reminds her of Angel Jezebel. While I usually take the credit, I do hafta admit that Angel Jezebel mighta also had just a little bit of a paw in bringin’ Mojo into the family.

Well I tell ya, an Angel’s work is never done! Some of the situations that kitties manage to get themselves into …. Take this 10 year old tabby named Crockett for example:

Crockett lived in London, England with his pet pawrents Bill and Pauline Low happily enough … until March 23, 2014 when the Lows got themselves a new couch and decided to donate the old one to a second-hand store. This involved a little bit of disassembly, and during the short time the bottom of the couch was open, it appears that Crockett decided to go explorin’ and managed to get himself trapped inside!

When it arrived at the thrift store, the couch went through "normal routine checks" by employees before being sold on March 27, 2014. One day later, the BBC reports, the new owners heard meowing from beneath the material — and then saw two claws poking out.

Here’s where the new owners of the second-hand furniture did a first-class act: They ripped up the sofa to free the terrified (not to mention hungry) kitty, tracked down his owners and returned him.

During Crockett’s five days in sofa solitary, Mom Pauline was “devastated” that her cat was missing, and was “delighted” to have him back. "We can't believe how he must have tucked himself into the sofa during the short time the bottom was removed and remained silent for so long," she told interviewers from the BBC

Crockett’s furniture rippin’ rescuers asked to remain anonymous, but told the BBC, ''We are so thrilled that he is safe and sound and was found in time."

Like I said, an Angel’s work is never done!

There’s frost all over the ground and on my whiskers too, but I am here with yet another happy story!

The one I have for ya today comes all the way from Staffordshire, Engand, and it’s about an orange & white kitty named Jesse, 18 months old, who in May of 2006 was headed to the vet for his (whisper ) s-h-o-t-z .. I mean –s. Well, guess Jesse didn’t like those things any more than the rest of us do. Or maybe his crate wasn’t fastened just right. Or maybe both.

Anyway, things went wrong and Jesse "… hurled himself at the front of the cat box and broke the door off," said his owner, Lesley Corbett.

"He was last seen heading off up by the side of the vet's and running hell for leather."

The Corbett’s six year old daughter Grace was devastated, because Jesse had been a special present just for her and she loved him a whole bunch. The whole family searched the town for days and put up posters. "We always hoped he was being looked after somewhere and, at some point, he might find his way back home," Mrs. Corbett told the BBC. But as years went by, that hope was getting’ pretty thin.

Fast forward to February 2014, when the Corbetts got a call from the vet … yes, the SAME vet, who told them that another client had brought in a stray cat that had been hanging around their house, and that the kitty’s microchip showed he was their missing Jesse! Aside from a minor leg injury, Jesse was healthy.

'My daughters burst into tears as soon as I walked through the door with him – they have never forgotten him.’ Mrs. Corbett said. 'At first he didn’t appear to recognise us. But now that he’s been in the same house with everyone for a week, he’s beginning to realise who we are.'

'We have no idea where Jesse had been for eight years, all we know is he’s happy and healthy and we are so happy to have him back."

We hear that Jesse is bein’ just a bit spoiled these days … and I say he’s earned it!

So there I was just this past Monday the 11th, loggin’ off CC after a day of postin’ my blogs when a headline on the home page caught my eye. “Click that!” I said to Mom, and wouldn’t ya know, it was Stop the Presses time because there was a brand spankin’ new lost & found story right there!

It was about a kitty named Dolly, a rescue kitty who lives on the Isle of Wight with her family, the Murphy-Lathams who own VIP Guest Cottages. Well I guess spendin’ so much time around vacationers gave Dolly a bit of the wanderlust because she decided to take a trip of her own. It just so happened that not far from Dolly’s place there was a luxury yacht docked, about to leave for a 5 week holiday stay in Poole on Dorset. Dolly slipped on board the steamliner and tagged along on the 30 mile trip, and it wasn’t long till a family spotted her in one of the cabins.

The family took care of Dolly as their “vacation kitty” but then, worried about what would happen to her after the trip, they took her to the vet where they discovered her microchip and traced her to her real family.

"Dolly has gone missing before but she always stayed on the island,” owner Debs Murphy-Latham told The Daily Mail after receiving the call about cat Dolly’s whereabouts on Saturday. "I would never have expected that she’d make it all the way to Poole. I think she has developed a taste for the high life. It’s not the first time she’s tried to board a yacht.”

In fact, Dolly was actually on indoors house arrest at the Guest Cottages after makin’ her way onto a yacht back in November, but early in December when the family’s two children were getting’ ready for school one morning she managed to slip outside, never to be seen again. Or so her family worried.

"We were all very upset when she went missing,” said Murphy-Latham. "We just didn’t know what had happened.”

On Sunday, the owners of the yacht drove Dolly down to Southampton, where Murphy-Latham and her two daughters, Natasha and Annabelle, met them after having taken a high-speed ferry from Cowes, allowing the seafaring Dolly one last high seas voyage.

"My daughters will have to peel themselves off the ceiling, they are so excited to have her back,” said Murphy-Latham. "I’d quite like her to stay put this time so she might be spending a few weeks indoors just until she remembers where she lives.”

And my advice to Dolly? Next time ya get the hankerin’ for adventure, get a Harley like a sensible kitty!

Another day, another cool story about a lost kitty who found their way home! This one comes outta Melbourne Australia and the kitty wasn’t actually lost, but it is still an awesome reunion story.

See, what happened was that a human named Michael Close hadda move away from Australia and couldn’t take his kitty Chopper with him. Michael was heartbroken but his mother came to the rescue and agreed to take Chopper in. But when Mom discovered that Chopper wasn’t happy in her place with her other cat, she found him a new, loving home. And all was well for Chopper for a few years.

But then Chopper’s new owner crossed the Bridge and Chopper found himself in a shelter, once again lookin’ for a home.

Meanwhile, not long afterwards, Michael Close had moved back to Melbourne, and his kids wanted a cat. He’d never forgotten his Chopper but had lost track of him once his mother had re-homed him, so there was Michael, browsin’ through the website of the local shelter … when he saw a picture of a kitty that looked just like his Chopper.

Michael couldn’t believe the resemblance, and of course WE know it was much more than a resemblance. And soon enough, so did Michael. When he went to visit the shelter, he and Chopper recognized each other right away. Part of Chopper’s ear is missing so Close was sure it was him. Then, he called Chopper’s name.

“I called out his original name and he lifted his head straight away,” he said. “We say it was meant to be,” Close told the Herald Sun.

"It was a really unbelievable moment. It was like a lost family member coming home,” Close said.
Chopper didn’t take much time getting reacquainted with his previous home.

Close said it was as if he had never left. "He came in and knew where he was immediately. He went straight upstairs to his little napping spot."

So in this very strange series of events, Michael Close and his special guy Chopper were reunited … after FIVE YEARS!

Here’s a story for ya about a kitty named Porsche who went missin’ in the middle of Hurricane Sandy and who somehow found his way back home.

Back in October of 2012, Uranie Roberts and her daughter Carol Baumann had evacuated their home in Toms River, NJ by boat during Hurricane Sandy. They took their beloved Porsche and went 8 miles inland to ride out the storm and its aftermath with relatives.

When Porsche escaped from the home where they were staying, Roberts and Baumann were devastated. “That was the last we saw of him,” Roberts told the news humans. And they didn’t think they’d ever see him again.

But six months later, in early May of 2013 and back in Toms River, they were stunned to hear Porsche meowing on their back deck! He was back, as if nothing had happened. “It’s a miracle,” Baumann says. Porsche had traveled eight difficult miles home – through storm damage, a busy urban area, traffic and even a bridge. “He’s got a little GPS in there,” Baumann says, patting Porsche’s head.

And Porsche was in pretty good shape when he landed back home, looks like people had been kind to him and fed him along the way. Or like some Angels had been watchin’ over him (wink)

Well, not ME, I was still an Earthling kitty back then so I can’t take any credit. But whoever had been helpin’ Porsche out along the way, his humans were thrilled to have their little cat back. “It’s wonderful,” Carol Baumann said.

One day back in April 2015 Mom was doin’ our bloggin’ when there was a holler from Dad “Come in here for a minute!” Well, that used to happen every so often so Mom rolled her eyes and put our bloggin’ aside and went in. Dad had the news on, and he told Mom you just HAVE to see this story:

And what Mom saw was a happy scene at Edmonton International Airport. 24 year old Amanda Graham was surrounded by well-wishers and news cameras as she cuddled with Cleo, the calico cat she’d lost almost six years earlier!

Way back in 2009, Amanda had been takin’ a course in Ontario when Cleo went missing. After months of searching and wondering, the course ended and Amanda hadda go home to Alberta, without her Cleo.

But then in fall of 2014, a stray was picked up by a shelter in Brockville, Ontario. The Stuck in the Mud Animal Rescue took the kitty in and nursed her back to health. When they took her to be spayed, the vet noticed a faded tattoo.

Another rescue group, the Quinte Lost Network traced the tattoo to a spay and neuter clinic in Edmonton, where records showed the cat had been spayed in 2009. The rescue groups were able to narrow down the possible owner to three people. A Facebook search led them to Amanda … half way across the country.

The story started to spread in the media, which is how Richard Guyon heard about Cleo. He wanted to do something to help, and donated his Air Miles to bring Cleo back to Edmonton.

“If they’re a random person and you can do an act of kindness for somebody, the rewards you can get back are ...,” Guyon said at the airport, his eyes filling slightly with tears. “Just remembering Amanda when the kitty cat climbed on her, you can’t put a value on that.”

Cleo didn’t travel alone on the flight from Toronto to Edmonton, she rode with Brenda Potts from the Quinte Lost Cat Network. Ms. Potts said “I think when (cats) get lost, they do try to find their owners ... I think that when she saw (Amanda) today, she might have recognized her. She might have been out there looking for her for six years”

So there they all were on the TV, Cleo’s happy human takin’ her outta a pink carrier marked with her name. Cleo didn’t care about all the humans gathered around, or the cameras, or the noise, she just snuggled with her special human, both of ‘em happy as anything!

“I didn’t think I’d cry as much as I did,” Amanda said a few minutes after the reunion. “It’s incredible, all of these nice people doing this amazing thing for someone they don’t even know.”

Mom was very glad that Dad interrupted our bloggin’ that morning!

Jan 10th Angel Sunday ~ Angel Pierre ~
There are some pictures of Angel Pierre out there, but no one has seen ‘em in years. He wasn’t with the family very long, and when he crossed the Bridge Angel Granddad laid him to rest on the grounds of the distillery he usedta work at. Kinda fittin’ for a kitty who at about 6 months old got WAY up on the high shelf of Angel Granddad’s walk-in bar and managed to knock a full half-gallon bottle of Wisers Deluxe onto the floor, where it shattered and scared the wits outta everyone. That makes Angel Pierre MY kinda kitty ~ even though he knocked the booze DOWN and not BACK like I might’ve, mol. Anyway, this poem our Mom wrote at about 11 years old pretty much tells Angel Pierre’s whole story:

“PIERRE”

“Pierre he came on the 25th
A Christmas present was he
He was black and white with a small moustache
And the tiniest black goatee

“He never me-owed, but always me-Awed
And ate his food with his paw
When he did he was the funniest thing
That anyone ever saw

“And then one night he stayed out all night
And didn’t even go very far
While crossing the street in front of our house
He was hit and killed by a car

“May Pierre rest in peace (he deserves to, you know)
In the yard of the Corby plant
And may his grave remain untouched
By even the tiniest ant.”

Kinda gets ya right here, don’t it? Cheers to my Angel brother Pierre!

Another day, another friend crossin’ the Bridge (sniff!). Today I want to honour a great golf buddy and the awesome author of the Furlip Files, PD Budd whose time to cross the Bridge came yesterday. He is happily reunited with his very best pal UBB and we have gentle hugs for their Mom!

Now, if I get elected Queen of CC I am hopin’ that it will bolster my street cred with Management and they will rethink that suggestion I made a while back about puttin’ a great big padlock on the gates. Maybe even a coupla sentries with a bazooka or two. We’ve had too many friends slippin’ through lately and I say it has got to stop.

Meanwhile, the campaign must go on:

♫ The cat came back … ♫” Most of our humans know that fun little song, including the four kids who belong to a lady named Paula Harper-Adams in Victoria, Australia. But they sure wouldn’t have believed it if I’d told ‘em that their mom’s 17-year-old cat Shelby would be coming back 13 years later! A kitty who, by the way, is older than any of them!

Paula and her family were surprised when in July 2014 a kitty showed up on their front doorstep who looked a lot like her missing fur baby Shelby. The stray kitty had matted fur and a really bad case of lice and as kind Paula took her to the vet to be fixed up, she was startin’ to think this kitty looked a whole, WHOLE lot like her missing Shelby!

But she was afraid to believe it, it just couldn’t be … or could it? "I half joked that if I could find a photo of Shelby, I’d be back (to compare). Well, I went home and, like a woman possessed, searched through box after box until I found the photo I was looking for, Shelby (taken in 2001). I took the photo back to the vet and the girls had a good look over her and the photo before coming back and announcing to me in the waiting room: ‘She is your cat.’ ’Both cats had a distinct white marking on their face.

“To find a cat after such a long time and wondering what had happened to the cat, we all felt really emotional,” said Natalie Dorain of Bellarine Veterinary Practice.

No one knows where Shelby’s been, but the family is overjoyed that she’s finally home. Paula says that she hopes their miracle will provide hope for all families who currently have missing pets, that they may someday be reunited again no matter how long it takes.

Amen to that, Paula!

First of all I wanna say how sorry my whole family is to hear that K. Wolfie crossed the Bridge yesterday. Our hearts go out to his Mom Linda and I wish that she coulda seen the turnout at the Bridge to welcome this very special kitty, friend to all and our noble King of July 2009. Love ya, Angel Wolfie!

Today I have a story about a kitty named Kevin who belonged to Cheryl Walls of Anderson, South Carolina. Kevin went missin’ early in 2014 and his Mom thought she would never see him again (sniff). But Kevin had other ideas, and Mom Cheryl was shocked when in April 2015 she got a call from an animal shelter in California that Kevin had been found – 2,000 miles away!

Here’s how it happened: A woman drivin’ a U-Haul cross-country was stopped at the Arizona –California border for a routine food and agriculture inspection. While the inspector was checkin’ things out, he heard meowing and discovered a skinny cat making a royal ruckus in the back. The lady drivin’ the van was as surprised as the inspector was that a kitty had slipped in and hitched a ride with her!

The kitty was friendly and he was taken to the Coachella Valley Animal Campus, where the humans scanned his microchip and were able to trace him to his special person way back in South Carolina.

"I've never seen anything like this. This is definitely a first for us," said shelter employee Emily Huffman, who cared for Kevin from the time he landed up in the shelter. "His attitude is great and you could never guess that he has traveled across the country or been through any sort of trials in his life," she said.

Thanks to the help of the awesome humans at two non-profit organizations - Shelter Transport Animal Rescue Team and Animal Solutions Konnection - Kevin was flown back home to South Carolina, where his human eagerly welcomed her beloved cat home again.

She is thrilled to have him back home with her! On top of bein’ her furry baby boy, Kevin is special because he’s named after her late fiancé. "It was shortly after Kevin passed away and then when we went into the animal shelter it was so ironic or coincidental that we picked out one of the cats and his name was Kevin," she told interviewers.

We are wishin’ Kevin and his special purrson Cheryl all the very best!

Here I am again, back from flyin’ all over lookin’ for stories of lost & found kitties. This one doesn’t come from too far away from my earth home, it happened down in Oregon.

Cissy and Ken Myers always took their two cats and dog camping with ‘em, since the poor babies all had a bad case of separation anxiety. Like a lot of RV-travelin’ kitties we know right here on CC, things went well until July 2012 when, on a family trip to Silver Creek Falls near Silverton things went badly wrong. One of their kitties, by the name of Mazy May, escaped from their tent-trailer.

The family says the zipper wasn’t secured all the way and Mazy May must have slipped out unnoticed. When the couple packed up to go home, they sadly hadda go home without Mazy May.

The Myers put up flyers and searched for a month, but no sign of Mazy May and no calls with tips from anyone else either. The Myers thought their cat was lost forever until they received a call from Silver Creek Falls Park Ranger Martha Duckworth on Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving 2013 that is! A whole 16 months after the camping trip where Mazy May made her escape, she was found and the Ranger was able to track down Cissy through an old park log.

"When they called, I was just shaking. I called my husband and said, 'This can't be!" Myers told KGW.com.

Ranger Duckworth thinks that Mazy May must’ve lived off of mice & bugs to stay alive, and she says the lucky feline must have some awesomely good instincts that protected her from predators.

The Myers say it's surreal that they are holding their feline in their arms after losing all hope of her safe return.

And any kitty who has ever been lost, even just for an hour, knows the joy that Mazy May must’ve felt when she saw her humans again after 16 long months!

The article doesn’t say how Ranger Duckworth was able to identify Mazy May, but I would be willin’ to bet that a microchip, tattoo or collar tag was involved. I had a microchip that they slipped under my skin at the shelter, and I proudly wore a collar tag that told everyone I had the chip. I also wore a tag with my name & phone number, and when I was feelin’ full of myself I would toss my head and make ‘em all jingle really loud so everyone would know that I had humans who wanted me back if I got lost.

Thankfully Mazy May had those kinda humans too!

Today’s story is about a kitty who was adopted 10 years ago in Turkey by Elizabeth Ober and her family while they were stationed there. Salem moved back to the States with his family & finally by 2014 they ended up in Lexington, Kentucky, where this story is comin’ to ya from.

Salem was mostly an indoor cat and on the day of another move, this one just across town, he shot outside and couldn't be found. The family went back to their old house every day for about a month, puttin’ out food in hopes he would come to them. They saw kitty paw prints around the food outside the back door. But Salem never showed.

The Obers resigned themselves to the idea that he was probably gone.

Then, just about a year ago right now a skinny black cat, about half Salem's original weight, showed up howling in the yard of their NEW house!

The cat seemed to know the family dog, Lucky, and he purred as he approached the Ober’s kids. He was declawed, like Salem. He howled instead of meowed, just like Salem. Still, since Salem looks like your standard black cat, Mrs. Ober wasn't convinced until she had his microchip scanned and …. No more doubt, it WAS Salem!

"My kids just went crazy," Ober said. "I was like, 'No way.'"

By car, the 8.3 miles between the old home to the new one takes about 15 minutes. But Salem took about two months to get there, and he ain’t tellin’ how he got through the traffic & other dangers to show up in the backyard of a house he'd never been to.

Chevy Chase Animal Clinic's Dr. Sarah Blanchett took care of Salem after his adventure, and she said he was happy and alert and a little thin, but none the worse for his trek. She has heard stories about animals beating the odds to find their owners. But, she said, "never anything to this extent."

Salem went to a house he'd never seen and knew nothing about. His journey, she said, "is just incredible."

People around the clinic speculated that maybe Salem was trapped in a box or hopped aboard the moving van. But Blanchett said the cat probably wouldn't have survived two months in a box.

Mrs. Ober is still wondering, but mostly she's just happy Salem is home and "has resumed residence at the foot of the bed."

Well, we’re rollin’ along nicely down the campaign trail, the fleas and gremlins are behavin’ themselves and I wanna take some time to say Thank You to all you kitties for the visits, and the goodies, and the comments and stories you’re sharin’ with me. Mikey said this was great, and he was …oh, I hate to say this about my goofy brother, but for once he was right.

Here’s another one for the books, and we should call it “What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas”! This is the story about a kitty named Bandit who lived happily with his family, the Corsos, just northwest of the Strip in Las Vegas.

Well, as kitties sometimes do, back in 2000, Bandit went missing. His family looked for him, but eventually they had to give up. Time passed and they moved to San Diego where, right at the end of March 2013, the phone in their new house rang.

"… I answered the phone, they said 'Hi are you missing Bandit?' 'Bandit... who is this?" said Dante Corso, Bandit's owner.

The caller explained that a vet had run Bandit’s microchip after he was turned in by a man who traps feral cats.

The Corsos drove out to Vegas first thing the next morning, still not sure whether they could believe this kitty was really their Bandit. But he was! The amazed family has since marked the momentous day on the calendar.

A news item published April 5th 2013 concludes:

“At 15 years old, Bandit is still trying to navigate his new surroundings.

“But, at least he's not alone.

“When the Corsos adopted him, they also took his little brother, Coot.

“Now it's a family reunion.

"I think his brother is a little upset because he said 'you're finally back, where have you been?'" said Corso.

“He's the prodigal kitty, finally home after all these years.”

All I can add to that is WOW!!

Here’s another kitty who saw way more of the world than she’d intended. The Richter family from West Palm Beach Florida took their 4 year old tortoiseshell kitty Holly with ‘em when they went to the Daytona International Speedway.

Okay, maybe not one of the brightest things to do, but they were in a big motorhome and Holly was used to travelin’ with her family. Unfortunately, Grandma opened the door while some fireworks were goin’ off, and you know how Grandmas are, they ain’t always the fastest at getting’ though doorways. The fireworks got louder and Holly flipped out and bolted out the door.

The Richters were distraught! For days they searched for Holly, puttin’ up flyers and getting’ the word out to rescue groups. But days went by with no word, and they despondently headed home to West Palm Beach without their kitty.

There was a brief glimmer of hope two weeks later when they got a call from a rescue group who had spotted Holly’s distinctive coat outside of a Daytona Beach restaurant which fed feral cats. But before her excited people could drive there, Holly had disappeared again.

Then she showed up, skin and bones, paws rubbed raw and too exhausted to meow, in Barb Mazzola's Palm Beach Gardens yard.

"She was pitiful. She just stood there, ready to collapse," said Mazzola, who rushed to the store for cat food and began feeding the cat she named Cosette.

In a week, Holly was well enough to walk inside. Mazzola coaxed her into a cat carrier and took her to the vet, the vet scanned for a microchip and … I think you know what happened next or I wouldn’t be tellin’ this story!

The chip came back to match the Richters, who got a call from the pet tracing agency.

They couldn't believe it. Holly had traveled about 190 miles in 62 days. Since she was an inside cat, they had no idea how she found her way, ending up less than a mile from home.

"It was quite a journey for this little girl," said Jacob Richter, holding his cat to his chest and breaking into tears. "We just can't believe she came home."

Us Angels hadda work overtime on that one, but it’s a job well done!

We interrupt our regularly scheduled campaign ...
Because it’s one of my very favourite holidays, Fruitcake Toss Day! As some of you already know, I’m famous for my seasonal specialty treat, Liver Fruitcake. And as some of you may also remember I made WAY too many a coupla years ago and so inaugurated the First Annual CC Fruitcake Toss Day. This year, by special request from my brother Mike who is still uncoverin’ candied cherries in his garden, we will be celebratin’ on the grounds of O.J.’s & my cabin near the Castle and Angel Lake. Just watch you don’t get any in the river. The EPA is still studyin’ the stuff, you know.

So… how DO ya toss a fruitcake? Let’s get our thinkin’ caps on again. We have big long skinny fruitcakes so we can toss ‘em like Scotsmen tossin’ the caber. Or we can shot-put ‘em! I have round ones that we can throw like baseballs. I’ve got football shaped ones for you kitties who are all about the Bowl games.

I know a certain group of kitties who might like these smaller ones I made into golf balls. Or these here liver fruitcake poker chips, if that’s more the kinda thing that floats your boat. The kitties on the Royals team who lost the MHL Snowball Classic Friday night to us illustrious Peasants (not like I am braggin’ or anything, ~ snicker), well you might wanna practice with these fruitcake hockey pucks.

Why, I even made fruitcake cookies in the shape of horseshoes, dice, and other tossable objects. Why cookies, you ask? Why, because I have some lovely T-Shirts reading “I tossed my cookies on Fruitcake Toss Day”. If you missed out on those last year, YOU are in luck now, this year in honour of my campaign they’re 2 for 1!! Limber up, kitties, and those who have catapults, bring them! Anything goes on Fruitcake Toss Day …

This story is about a 6-month-old gray-and-white cat ~~ it’s always us gray & white ones, ain’t it? Anyway, this particular gray & white young lady was named Spice and she somehow made a trip that I’d even think twice about makin’ on my Harley! More than 2,300 miles from Albuquerque, New Mexico all the way to Portland, Maine!

Spice was found, of all places, in a duffel bag filled with kitty litter and cat food that was left at the Catholic Charities Maine Thrift Store in Portland on Nov. 5. A man who was shopping at the store noticed the rustling in the bag and discovered Spice. He looked for tags and a collar & when he didn’t find any he took the kitty home. That didn’t last long. Six days later, he brought Spice to the Animal Refuge League in Westbrook ME after she made a mess in the house. The shelter checked Spice for a microchip and .. voila! She had one! The shelter contacted HomeAgain, who put the shelter in touch with the cat's owner in … Albuquerque!

"She was floored, absolutely stunned,'' a news story reported. "She doesn't know anyone in Maine and has never been here, so she had no idea how the cat got here. English is not her first language, and she is very shy, but she desperately wants the cat back.'' The owner figured that Spice must have run outta the house on Halloween, while the door was open for her to hand out candy.

But how did Spice get all the way across the country? We’ll never know, but it's possible she hitched a ride with a long-haul trucker, or even hopped a train (my kinda free spirit kitty!). The Catholic Charities thrift shop is near an Amtrak station and a freight railroad, and someone had been caring for Spice by leaving kitty litter and cat food in the duffel bag before she was found.

"We have been around 103 years, and I will tell you this is the first time an animal has arrived at the shelter from anywhere further away than a 100-mile radius,'' Animal Refuge League executive director Patsy Murphy told TODAY.com. "What are the chances?"

So how did Spice get back home? Her owner didn't have the bucks to pay for a plane ticket and neither did the Animal Refuge League. Southwest Airlines offered to fly her home in the cargo hold, but it WAS November in Maine after all! A rich business man came along and paid the tab for Spice to go home in comfort, in a heated cabin.

The Animal Refuge League wants one last word:

"The big takeaway is the importance of microchipping your cat, and the reunification that can happen whether it's two miles or 2,000 miles away. It becomes a critical chip to re-homing the pet to the family."

I second that completely! Here’s to Spice!

~ HAPPY MEW YEAR from A. MALLOW!! ~
And we are startin’ the new year right! Why? Because your COTM candidate is none other than ME! Oh, there were times when I worried that CC wasn’t gonna make it this far but would they DARE fold before I had a chance at the CC crown? I had a long talk with the gremlins and fleas and they agreed that it would be <ahem> prudent to behave themselves for just a bit longer. I can be very purrsuasive, mol.

Now somethin’ a lot of ya don’t know about me is that before I found my forever home I spent six weeks doin’ time in the shelter. I was about a year old then and I’d been brought in as a stray. The humans in the shelter took good care of me and after they spayed me I straightened up & dropped my tom-chasin’ ways so I could be ready to find a forever home and stay put this time!

Which leads to the question, where was I for that first year? I wasn’t scared of humans, in fact truth be told I have always liked humans way more than I’ve ever liked other felines. So I definitely HAD humans before, and they were good to me, but where were they? And how did I get separated from them? Did they look for me? Worry about me? Did they think of me sometimes & hope that I was somewhere safe & happy? Mom has had a kitty or two go missin’ and sometimes she would think about those other humans of mine, whoever they were, and wish there was a way she could tell ‘em that I was doin’ fine and that I was cared for and loved right to the last day of my earth life (oh darn it, now I’m blubberin’, doggone winter allergies anyway).

So, since there’s someone out there who might (almost 10 years later!) still be thinkin’ of Yours Truly as their missin’ kitty, I thought that would be a good theme for my campaign. So every day I’m gonna tell ya about a missin’ kitty who found their way back to their humans against all odds. Every day except on Sundays that is. On Sundays I’ll introduce each of our Angel family members, because most of ya already know my Earthling sibs.

So here goes, I am saddlin’ up my golden Angel Harley and startin’ off down the catpaign trail with a roar. Outta my way, fleas and gremlins! VROOM!!

Hey Angel Wendy!
Mom worked til noon today and after stopping at the post office, CVS and the Hallmark store she came home to feed us & change. She had noticed one front tire looked very low. She tried putting air in with no luck. And her silly tire gauge wasn't working. So Mom went down to the tire place about 6 blocks away & they found a nail in it! He patched it and only charged Mom $22.21. Not bad to know it is okay now. Leaving a vote. Peace & love. Have a purrfect evening. Kitty Kisses. Dean
