Weekend blog: CATching up on the past week. Sent Mom off to work every morning again after the long holiday weekend.Was expecting snow Thursday into Friday, but it didn’t; just a little dusting of white. Yesterday we helped mom do the laundry. I ran downstairs to the basement & checked behind the storage racks & made sure there were no mice. Shadow made it down to the second step at the top of the stairs. Mom’s finally caught Shadow to brush his fur; usually he keeps running & hiding under furniture MOL!! We’re having fun chasing the laser lights we got for Christmas especially the length of the first floor from front door to back door. Now we’re expecting snow Tuesday through Wednesday, but not counting on it just yet. Saying prayers for our furfriends whose pawrents are recovering from illnesses. Have a great week & we’ll CATch up again next week with our blogs. Purrs, Terri

The Madonna’s Tribute to the Tabby Cat

“Baby Jesus was unable to sleep. His mother beseeched the stable animals for assistance, but none could help. Then a small, shy tabby cat stepped forward. After first thoroughly cleaning herself (so as not to offend the mother or her child), the striped gray kitten snuggled beside baby Jesus. Her rich purr filled the stable with a cat lullaby, and the baby fell asleep with a smile. The Madonna touched the kitten on her forehead in grateful benediction. Just about every kitty who’s been around CC awhile—or even a short time--knows of the Knight Gang from Eugene, OR. Mom Lillian, the Knight Gang’s Secretary, is one of CC’s most active bloggers, and today it’s our pleasure to ask you to vote for one of the handsome members of the Gang--Whyskrs #10378 on Saturday, so that he can be Sunday’s COTD.

Whyskrs came to be part of Knight Gang after being found at a loading/unloading area of a local supermarket when he was just a kitten. Even though Whyskrs’ Mom and Dad already had a large number of kitties, Dad had fallen in love with this cute little guy, so his Mom agree to take him as a surprise for Dad!

Whyskrs is a kitty who knows what he does and doesn’t like. He really likes lying across Mom’s chest, sleeping under the covers and playing with a peacock feather, but he hates having his tummy touched or getting his nails trimmed. What kitty likes nail trimming thing anyway, right?

Today the moon is full!

A Good mews story

In 1996, Seattle Washington, a one year old black cat, Sneakers, disappeared from her yard. The family, including Sneakers owner, Hilary, 4 years old, was devastated. The family did all the usual things to find Sneakers: posted flyers, went door to door, contacted local shelters. Sneakers was never found or returned. Eventually he was replaced with other cats.

In 2006,an administrator from the Sacramento CA animal shelter called Hilary.A cat had been turned into the shelter because the family couldn’t care for the cat anymore. The cat was scanned for a chip, and a phone call resulted. After 10 years, Sneakers 10 years old and Hilary, now 14, were reunited!

Today is ASPCA National Kids and Pets Day

In Animation, Cartoons, and Comics:
Krazy Kat was the first black cat in a cartoon strip. It was first published in 1910 by Hearst Newspapers. He became a movie star in 1916 and into the 1930s.

In the 1920s, Felix the Cat, a generous, fearless and optimistic character starred in 80 films. He had a theme song “Felix Kept on Walking” which sold millions of records. 4/25 Shadow presents“Le Chat Noir” The Black Cat
An overcast day with temperatures in the 50s, light rain expected.

This is the last in the series on cats that are all black. It is the Havana Black Oriental Self Color that is featured here.

Prior to World War II, there was thought to have been a Siamese-type cat with a solid black coat. The cat today is not the same. In the 1960s, dedicated breeders, in the United Kingdom, began a program to produce a plain-coated cat of Siamese type without a restricted coat pattern. The Havana Black is the result of this breeding program. The breed is recognized in all countries.

This cat does not like to be left alone and should have the company of another cat. It is intelligent, affectionate, athletic and outgoing. In fact, it has a very high activity level. It is also very talkative. Its body is long and slim and of medium size. The Havana Black has a long whip like tail and long legs. Its head is triangular wedge shape, with a straight profile and large wide-set ears.

The coat is short, sleek and close lying, with little grooming required. The color is jet black to the root with no shading or markings. Its eyes are Oriental in shape and slanting toward the nose and the eye color should be a clear green.

In some countries, sailor’s wives kept black cats in their homes to ensure the safe return of their husbands.

Sailors thought having a black cat on board the ship was good luck. But, it was forbidden to say the word “cat” during the voyage, or the trip would be sabatoged. This is because they thought the cat was a disguised witch.

In France, there is a legend about a black cat named “Matagot.” If Matagot comes to your door, take him in and care for him. It is thought this will bring the family wealth.

An ancient Japanese legend tells of a vampire cat that kills beautiful maidens by sucking their blood. The cat assumes the identity of the maiden and preys on her lover.

Black Cat Stories with happy endings.

Molly the Mouser
In April 1, 2006 a black kitty, Molly the Mouser, 11 months old lived at a deli in Manhattan. The cat became lost inside the walls of the building. The fire and police were called to help, followed by the Animal Care and Control Department. The poor kitty was lost between the walls for 14 days. All types of devices were used to try to find Molly, including drills, miniature cameras, and raw fish to try to coax Molly out.

Finally, two weeks later, on April 14, the rescuers found her wedged between bricks and sheet metal and pulled her out to cheers from onlookers. Molly was fed a wonderful meal and recuperated nicely, returning to her mousing duties.

Big Black Cats are an Endangered Species, a story found on the Internet National Geographic. Sad story,but true.

The jaguar is more commonly known to be a large yellow and spotted cat. In some traditions the Jaguar God of the Night was the formidable lord of the underworld. The name jaguar is derived from the Native American word yaguar, which means "he who kills with one leap." But, jaguars also come in a sleek black color of black with black spots. The jaguar once populated North and South America, but is now found mostly near the Amazon Jungle. There is one at the San Diego Zoo named Oscar who is a Brazilian jaguar. In the zoo near Budapest Hungary, there is also a black jaguar. Jaguars are fast animals, and the symbol of the sports car since 1935. It exemplifies sleekness and grace.

The black panther aka cougar(Puma concolor)is an endangered species on the continent of Africa. The panther is a large, long-tailed predatory cat with big paws for its size.Its population grows smaller along with its habitat. Environmental contamination from chemicals like mercury is also endangering these beautiful animals.The black panther is also found in South America and Western United States.
Unfortunately, both cats are being killed by hunters for the big cats beautiful and precious fur and by farmers to protect livestock.

4/20 Shadow presents“Le Chat Noir” The Black Cat
This is a short poem by Zbigniew Herbert, translated by John and Bogdana Carpenter. It is found in the book “The Great Cat” poems about cats. It is simply titled “Cat”

“He is all black, but has an electric tail. When he sleeps in the sun he is the blackest thing one can imagine. Even in his sleep he catches frightened mice. One can see this in the little claws that are growing from his paws. He is terribly nice and naughty. He picks birds off the trees before they are ripe.”

Not all poems end happily if you're a bird or a mouse.

Now for a joke:
Is it bad luck if a black cat follows you?
That depends on whether you’re a man or a mouse.

4/18 Shadow presents "Le Chat Noir" The Black Cat
The sun and the clouds can't make up their mind today; temps are in the 40s-50s! Thanks to all who sent get well wishes to our Mom. She’s beginning to feel better from the cold she’s had for a week.

On Sundays Black Cat breeds are highlighted. Today it is the Bombay (and Asian Self)

The Bombay is the best know breed of the Asian Selfs. Bombays have been produced in Britain and the USA. In Britain it is a cross between the Burmilla/Asian. In the USA it was the result of mating a Burmese with a domestic shorthair. As a result, the two Bombay breeds vary slightly in looks. The Bombay is known as the “patent leather kid with the copper penny eyes.” Its eyes are very bright. The eyes are large and colored copper in the USA, and also gold, yellow, chartreuse, green are acceptable in Britain.

The body is a medium-sized well-muscled body with a wedge-shaped head and a rounded dome. The ears are medium size and wide set. The front legs are slightly shorter than the rear legs. The tail is proportioned to the body and tapers to the tip.

Its jet-black coat has a famous sheen and texture. The coat is close lying, shiny and sleek. The Bombay must have solid deep black jet color to the roots. Coloring should be even, although some tabby markings are acceptable. Little grooming is needed.

The Bombay is outgoing, athletic, affectionate and intelligent. It is also very talkative.

Shadow presents“Le Chat Noir” the Black Cat
Mom has been suffering with a very bad cold/flu or allergy this week. A trip to the doctor Wednesday wasn’t much help, so she continues to take her OTC meds and hopefully it will all go away very soon. That is why, except for the CMR page and visiting & voting for COTD, yesterday we weren’t able to do the COTM blog. This morning, we’ve propped mom in her computer chair & put a soft pillow behind her back, so that she’ll be able to help me with my daily COTM blogs. Today is a presentation of Furiday and Caturday. Ted’s Adventure
A black cat, Ted, from California jumped out of his owner’s car through a window in 1994 and disappeared. Ten years later, the humane society near San Francisco found Ted. Owner and cat were reunited because Ted was wearing a microchip. The owner said the it was like old times, with Ted rubbing against his owner and seemed happy to be home. Now they take rides in the car with the window rolled up.

Winston Churchill was a well know cat lover. He took his black cat, Nelson, with him when he became prime minister of Great Britain in 1940. A chair was held for Nelson next to Churchill in the Cabinet.

A common belief around the world is that every black cat has a least one single white hair. If you can find it and pull the hair out without getting scratched, a happy marriage will be yours. (Don’t try this on me-I’m sharpening my claws MOL!).

Black cats are welcomed in the theater. This is because many actors have reported “black cat experiences.” It has been reported that seeing a black cat before taking the stage will deliver a show-stopping performance. The black cat is considered such good luck that some actors bring their own backstage with them. Nicholas Cage has a Bombay.

4/15 Shadow presents "Le Chat Noir" The Black Cat
A sunny day with temperatures in the 60s with a slight breeze.

Today is poetry day. This poem entitled “Five Eyes” is by Walter De La Mare

“In Hans’ old mill his three black cats
Watch his bins for thieving rats.
Whisker and claw, they crouch in the night,
Their five eyes smouldering green and bright:
Squeaks from the flour sacks, squeaks from where
The cold wind stirs on the empty stair,
Squeaking and scampering, everywhere.
Then down they pounce, now in, now out,
At whisking tail, and sniffing snout;
While lean old Hans he snores away
Till peep of light at break of day;
Then up he climbs to his creaking mill,
Out come his cats all grey with meal-Jekkel, and
Jessup, and one-eyed Jill.”
