Pete COTM March 2011

About Me

Active within 1 Day

Hi! My name is Pete COTM March 2011

I am an American Shorthair from Jacksonville, FL

Nicknames: Sweet Pete, Little Buddy,

Age: 9 years old

Gender: M

Coat: short haired

Education: I'm extremely cunning. I've learned to get along with five older girl cats. It's neat being the only guy

My favorite tricks and treats are: Ever since I was just a litle kitten ( my baby photo is in the gallery below) I've been able to steal the hearts of any humans I meet. Treats ? well, Pounce crunchy treats are very good, and I really like Kitty Kaviar, which is dried tuna sliced into thin flakes. It's really good.

Where I hang out: on Mom and Dad's bed or in the window, but my very favorite, is up on the kitchen counter helping my Dad cook.

My favorite grubs: I like Fancy Feast dry, and an evening treat of a little tuna

My pet peeves: Loud noises, like unexpected sneezes, or stuff being dropped.

What I love about my owners: "Owners" don't be silly, Mom and Dad are my family. A father doesn't "own" his son, does he? I love that they love me, and I love them.

My cat hobbies: I like to play with furry toys, And feather toys (see photo in gallery of me and my feather toy) Also, I really like to chase my older sister, Raven (A sweet, petite, all black American Shorthair)

Pet motto: Love and you will be loved.

TODAY'S FUN FACTS
I want to thank every kitty for your votes and support. Hope you have been enjoying
the Cat Facts. For the next few days, I will be blogging a few fun facts about cats.

Here are today's fun facts:

*A cat can move each ear independently. He can aim the cup of his ear in the direction
of the sound to improve his hearing.

*Cats can see well in dim light, but they cannot see in total darkness.

*Cats hear a much broader range of sounds than people do.

*The tip of a cat's nose is covered by a tough layer of skin called nose leather.

Dear K. Pete & the Girls,
Good evening and thank you for your catmail. Thank you very much for the kind compliment on my looks :::blush:::. Great about the photos. I can hardly wait for spring to get here. My brofur, Angel Malachi, said he thinks I'll be a natural because I'm a Gemini. I am not sure what that means, but he said it like it was a good thing.

I am very much enjoying my new furever home and wonderful pawrents and they are just head-over-heels in love with me, because I'm a good boy for them.

Thank you so much for my vote! I left a vote on your page and hope that you and yours all had a terrific Thursday.

Purrs & hugs,
Mason

~...~♥~...>*<...~♥~ FAMILY NEWS ~♥~...>*<...~♥~...~

♥ Ok, here's the Deal or No Deal!!!! Mom and dad heard on our Local News the other night about outside kitties getting sick and dying due to the Feline Distemper about five or so miles from us so mom made appointments for our outside kitties ASAP!!!!

♥ UPDATE: 1/29
Mom was able to get my littermate SISSEE #11531 in to see Dr. Lisa this morning to get her Distemper vaccine. She was NOT a happy girl going there, being there and coming home as she meowed all the time --- LOUDLY!!!! Tehehehe!!!!

♥ TC also went in this morning to see Dr. Lisa for his spinal adjustment. Mom also had them give him a Distemper vaccine as well afterwards. Dr. Lisa says TC is such a GOOD boy as he NEVER meows in complaints and just enjoys his treatments as he lays on the warm SnuggleSafe. TC is finally feeling a bit better as his pain has lessened some between taking the Curcumin powder, the Traumeel (1 pill 2X day), the Dasuquin (1 capsule 2X day) and the Chiropractic. He also loves his electric sleeping pad. He goes back next Thursday for another adjustment.

♥ Mom will be capturing MYSTEANAH-GRE' late this afternoon as mom also made an appointment for her to get her Distemper vaccine since no one has claimed her. She's considered to be a part of our family.

♥ On Saturday (1/31) mom has to TRY to capture NEUBEE #123633 first, then she will get PATCH GIRL #12767 and SUEZEE #11528 as she will be taking ALL three in the same time to get their Distemper vaccines. NeuBee will have to be transferred into a squeeze-crate at the vets since she WILL NOT let any human touch her other than mom. A few years back NeuBee had bitten mom's hand sinking all four canines into it!!!! Dr. Nancy gets to do these 3 girls!!!!

♥ We will try to visit as many as possible today, but doubt if we can get to all.

good morning!
nice out there albeit minus the stupid wind and janet can already feel the change in the weather as the barometer is drop-ping again which means another storm which indeed it is coming in tomorrow night into friday morning to screw up the commute again. which means any blogs/votes tomorrow will double as fri-day as well. we got an even foot of snow here as it shut off suddenly so were lucky it wasn't more than that. janet's going out to bash gutters and rake the front of the roof in a little while as it's only fair to not have nat do the entire house and janet just shovel paths for pepper out through little orchard. sandy,ab,haley, angels

TODAY'S CAT FACT
GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF KITTENS

A healthy kitten will have a steady weight gain daily. They usually opens their eyes 7-10 days after birth and soon after their ears open and their first teeth begin to appear.

About 3 weeks of age, kittens begin to walk and explore the environment. By about 5 weeks of age, kittens have most of their temporary teeth and begin to eat solid foods. By 6 weeks old, kittens have fully developed their brain and nervous system.

Kittens develop important physical skills by playing with one another and they learn to get along this way. By watching and imitating their mother, kittens improve many instinctive skills, especially hunting. Most cats reach their adult body size by about 1 year old.

HOW CATS COMMUNICATE TO EACH OTHER

Cats communicate to each other by means of odor. Cats have scent glands that are on their forehead, around their mouth, and near the base of their tail. The cat will rub these glands against people and objects. This marks them with their scent. Only cats and a few other animals can smell the odor.

TODAY'S CAT FACT
VARIOUS WAYS CATS COMMUNICATE

Cats communicate in a variety of ways. One way is by sound. The sounds of a cat can have various meanings. A meow can be a friendly greeting or it may express curiosity, hunger, or loneliness.

Purring usually means contentment but cats also purr when they are sick. When cats hiss or growl, it indicates fear and anger.

Cats also communicate through body language. A friendly cat may greet someone with his tail raised vertically but a frightened or angry cat flicks his tail from side to side, arches his back, and puffs up his fur.

TODAY'S CAT FACT
WHY DO CATS HAVE WHISKERS?

The whiskers on your cat are actually touch receptors.
The tips of their whiskers are so sensitive, they can
detect the slightest directional change in a breeze.

Cats feel their way around even in the dark. Your cat will be able to move smoothly into a dark room and not bump into anything.

Whiskers also help cats figure out where they will fit. The whiskers on your cat's nose are about as long as his body is wide. This helps them to figure out how wide an opening is and whether or not they will be able to fit through it.

Hey Pete!
Thanks, we're big Seahawks fans, as you probably noticed. Long time no mew! And this will only be a quick-bit happy purr to let you know we still exist! Mom has been doing nothing all week but cleaning, shopping, cooking, and *hiss* READING! You would think that in her "spare" time she could dedicate every bit of it to US and CC! Nut on no! She is SO selfish she actually takes that time for herself! If we weren't all such well-mannered felines *coff* we'd punish her by doing 'things' in her slippers... Hahhaa! Anyway, happy Saturday! And go Hawks!

TODAY'S CAT FACT
BRUSHING YOUR CAT'S TEETH

Here are some steps to follow when brushing your cat's teeth.

*Get your cat used to the idea of getting their teeth brushed. Gently massage their gums with your fingers or touch them with a cotton swab.

*After a few sessions of massaging the gums, get them used to the taste of the toothpaste. Put a small amount of cat-formulated toothpaste on their lips.

*Next, introduce a toothbrush that is made for cats. The ones that you wear over your finger give your cat's gums a nice massage.

*Apply toothpaste, that is made for cats, to their gums.

It is best to get your cat's teeth examined by a vet before you start brushing them. Many cats have mild gingivitis and it can hurt their gums if you brush them too hard.

Note: The best time to get your cat started with brushing their teeth is when they are a kitten so they will be used to it as they grow older.

good afternoon!
you all have the distinct honor of the last vote of the day off of either of our pages as janet's now just finishing up for to-day. she started after 5 this morning and didn't get past 6 more entries before she and nat left for grocery shopping, and a few other stops along the way home. then she got stuff put away in record time loaded the washer again as the first load was done before she was off as well and the last load was just ready for fabric softner once she got in from her walk and was ready not to far after that. we have a sinker to a noreaster/heavy rain then back to a sinker in reverse sunday afternoon-night and heard it's supposed to be out of here in time for the monday morning commute, janet sure hopes so as the one last friday started around the mor-ning commute and gave us 3" snow, then monday it was the other direction a sinker with a combo of 1" of snow/sleet and to rain so a mess to clean up! sandy,ab,haley, angels

TODAY'S CAT FACT
KEEPING YOUR CAT'S TEETH HEALTHY

If your cat has bad breath, this usually indicates oral problems. When he has bad breath and is drooling, the cause is often related to gum disease and/or tooth decay.

*Provide your cat with a good diet to maintain his teeth for good health. Your veterinarian may recommend a diet that's good for your cat.

*Get your cat a yearly dental checkup.

*Brush your cat's teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste made specially for cats.

*Massage your cat's gums: Tooth decay usually starts with inflamed or irritated gums. This will accelerate healing and also strengthen the gums so that your cat will less likely suffer from problems in the future. Gums should be pink, not red or irritated.

CATS TEETH

Cats grow two sets of teeth in their lifetime. The first set, which consists of 26 teeth, are known as their milk teeth. The teeth start to appear when the cat is about four weeks old and they will have their whole set by the time they reach the age of six weeks old.

By the time the cat is about six months old, the milk teeth will have fallen out and been replaced by 30 permanent teeth.

Cats use their teeth for grasping, cutting and shredding food. Their teeth are also useful for self-defense.

TODAY'S CAT FACT
GROOMING

Cats instinctively clean themselves. They do this by licking their fur with their tongue and they also rub and scratch their fur with their paws. Each day cats lick a paw and wash their face and head with the wet paw. But cats do not always groom themselves well.

As an owner, we need to comb or brush a cat's fur everyday to remove loose hairs. This is essential for long-haired cats to prevent the coat from tangling and matting.

Daily brushing or combing reduces the amount of loose hair that cats swallow when cleaning themselves. Swallowed hair can wad up in their stomach forming a hairball.

Kittens should also be brushed or combed to make it easier to care for them as they get older.

THE CAT'S COAT

A cat's coat protects its skin and also provides insulation. There are two types of hair that most cat's have. They are the outer part and the undercoat. The outer part is made up of long, stiff primary, or guard, hairs. The undercoat has softer and shorter secondary, or down, hairs. These coats vary in color, length, and texture among cats.

Commonly used terms to describe a cat's coat are: solid or self, smoke, shaded, tabby, parti-color, and colorprint. Tomorrow, I will be covering these types of coats.

Happy Mew Year Day for Cats!!
Any cat owner will tell you that cats consider themselves to be far, far superior to the mere mortals they live with. We most certainly feel entitled and deserving of all that life has to offer, so it's only fair to have a Happy Mew Year Day just for us! Happy Mew Year for Cats Day was created by wellcat.com so cats could have their own little celebration for New Year’s. And why not indeed? We're graceful, regal and all around fabulous, so we deserve our own version of New Year’s!
Like the hugely inferior human version of New Year’s Day, it is on this special day that we felines can paws & consider the ‘mewness’ of the brand new season & all of the purrfect possibilities it holds. Perhaps this will be the year their people start feeding them tinned food instead of dry? Will the useless dog realize that the cat is king (or queen) in this house? All these questions and more can be pondered by our furry minds today while we go about our normal business of looking aloof and disinterested. After all, we know all too well that cats rule and dogs drool...MOL! This is the purrfect day to tell everyone to adopt a kitty from their local shelter so they can have the loving furever home of their dreams. Happy Mew Year Day for Cats dear furiends!!

It's another cold day outside but we're supposed to warm up & get rain on Caturday & Sunday. Unfortunately it's going to get frigid by next Monday though so mom will be making sure the outside kitties have enough warm blankets & will also put the heat light over their house. The good thing is that the 3 outside kitties (Joseph, JJ & Callie) all snuggle together without fussing so they'll be fine as long as they stay in their warm house.
All of my younger fursisters are being their ornery selves today & have been exploring the boxes that mom is trying to put the remaining Christmas decorations in. Too bad they don't have self control like I do...MOL!

Well got to run for now but I'll be back next week to meow at you more. Have a purrfect weekend!

Good afternoon kitties, today's last topic is: TICKS!!!

They get under everyone's skin, suck up to anyone they can and spend much of their lives with their mouths buried in your pets flesh. They are also responsible for spreading Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme Disease.

MOW 'EM OVER: Ticks like to congregate several feet off the ground on vegetation along paths and roadsides. They patiently bide their time until dinner--your pet--comes walking by. Keeping grass and weeds trimmed to below ankle height will put ticks at a disadvantage.

ABOLISH THE NURSERY: Although mature ticks 'stalk' large prey, younger ticks typically feed on mice and other rodents before graduating to your pets. Making your yard inhospitable to rodents will help eliminate ticks. Remove brushy cover and rock piles, secure trash cans with lids. It is also a good idea to stack any firewood away from the house.

TAKE THE ROAD MOST TRAVELED: When hiking and taking Fido along, stick to areas away from large weedy places. Just stick to the trails and make sure Fido sticks with you.

GIVE HER A NEW COAT: Before heading out into the Country, protect your pet with a spray, dip or powder containing pyrethrins. Before using any insecticides on Fluffy, be sure to check the label to make certain it is safe for cats.

WATCH OUT HITCHHIKERS: After you and your pet return home, give him a careful going-over. While some species of ticks are easy to see, others aren't as big. It takes sharp eyes to spot them all. Ticks like being warm and protected, so pay special attention to the areas under the legs and in and around her ears.

COMB THEM OUT: If you spot ticks, spray your pet lightly with a tick insecticide and then comb his fir with a fine-toothed comb. They are available at Pet stores Nationwide.

TAKE FAST ACTION: If you should find a feeding tick, it's important to remove it quickly. The longer it feeds, the more likely it is to transmit Lyme Disease.

GIVE A GENTLE PULL: The best way to remove a tick is to take a pair of tweezers or forceps, grab as close to the ticks head as possible and gently pull it out. This way it come out nicely--heads and heels and all.

DO A DAB: For extra protection after removing the tick, dab the area with a topical antiseptic like Betadine Solution or an antibiotic ointment.

DISPOSE OF THEM CAREFULLY: Once you have removed a tick, don't just throw it in the trash or toilet. They don't die just because they have been detached. You could end up with ticks crawling out of your toilet at a most inopportune time. Put the detached tick in a jar partly filled with a rubbing alcohol or tick insecticide. Then cover the jar and dispose of it or keep it handy in case your pet develops Lyme Disease...you will need to it show the vet.

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: Call your vet right away if you notice your pet not eating, their joints seem sore, you see open sores, fever, and diarrhea. They could even be partially paralyzed.

Good afternoon kitties!! Today's topic: INSECT BITES & STINGS!!

To mosquitoes your pets are a four-legged free lunch. Bees, hornets and wasps, however may be too irritated to lunch...they will just sting and fly off. Here are some tips to help relieve stings!

GET THE POINT: If your pet has been targeted by a bee, somewhere in his coat is a stinger. To get it out, carefully part his hair to get a good view, then remove it with a pair of tweezers...if it not embedded to far in , trying scraping it out with your fingernail or a credit card. That way you are less likely to squeeze additional venom into the wound.

SOOTHE IT WITH SODA: Applying a paste of baking soda and water to the sting several times daily can help ease discomfort. A small dab of calamine lotion will also do the trick.

TRY M.O.M.: This OTC medication contains magnesium hydroxide, which will help reduce the itch and irritation. You can coat the sting several times a day with it. {DO NOT GIVE ORALLY}

GET HELP FROM YOUR KITCHEN: Meat tenderizers contain enzymes that help break down the poison in insect stings, reducing the itching. Make a paste by adding water to the tenderizer, then apply it directly to the sting...repeat often. {mom said this works for humans, too}

DAB ON SOME AMMONIA: Ammonia helps cut the pain of bug bites and stings...you can dab it on the sting with cotton several times a day.

HELP FROM A PLANT: Applying a thin layer of gel from an aloe vera plant will help ease discomfort and possibly speed healing. Aloe is very good for skin irritations...if you do not have an aloe vera plant, you can purchase the gel in any store.

TRY ANOTHER OTC: For areas that are sore and irritated, try applying a thin coat of hydrocortisone cream with 0.5 % hydrocortisone.

CHILL IT DOWN: Applying a cold compress to stings helps take the swelling down, dull the pain. Wrap a handful of ice cubes in a washcloth and hold it to the area for at least 5 minutes or longer.

REPEL THE PROBLEM: Dousing your pet with Avon Skin-so-soft will not only make her smell good, it also repels fleas, flies, mosquitoes and other stinging bugs. Put it in a spray bottle and spritz your pet every week or so.

Tomorrow: TICKS!!!

Good afternoon...we have 32* and sunny skies today! Our topic today is: POISONING!

Pets are always poking their noses into interesting places, but sometimes what they find can be hazardous to their health! Every yera thousands of cats and dogs are poisoned in the 'safety' of their own home. They can't read labels, plus things that taste awful to us, might taste good to them...Dogs especially think that anti-freeze is a tasty treat.

I.D. THE PROBLEM: Even before you call your vet, you need to know exactly what your pet has gotten into. Don't just tell your vet that your pet drank all of the pesticide..he will need to know exactly what he swallowed, what the active ingredients are, things you can read to him from the packaging.

PURGE THE POISON: If your pet has gotten into pills, antifreeze or other toxic substances, getting him to vomit will help eliminate some of the danger. To make your pet vomit, give him household peroxide{3% solution} 1 TBS for each 10 pounds of pet. Draw the liquid into a syringe or turkey baster, tip your pets head back and squirt it toward the back of his tongue. In most cases your pet will vomit within 5 minutes {this may not work with cats, cause even Vets have a hard time getting cats to vomit} DO NOT OVERDOSE on peroxide...it can be dangerous. NEVER use Syrup of Ipecac...this is toxic to pets.

NEUTRALIZE THE DANGER: If your pet has devoured something caustic--like drain cleaner or kerosene--DO NOT induce vomiting because the poison will do a double-burn...going down and coming up. Instead give something to neutralize like 3 tsp of vinegar or lemon juice diluted in an equal amount of water.{see PURGE THE POISON for administering}.

ABSORB IT WITH CHARCOAL: Giving your pet activated charcoal, either in tablet form or as a powder mixed with water, will quickly absorb toxins from their stomach before they have a chance to be absorbed into their system.

DILUTE IT WITH MILK: Giving your pet milk will help dilute poison while at the same time coating her stomach and mouth, helping soothe the irritation. If your pet seems woozy, however, do not give her anything to eat or drink because it could cause suffocation.

Continued in part 2.

POISONING: PART 2
PUT MEDICATIONS OUT OF REACH: The most ingenious childproof cap isn't a match for a curious cat or a diligent dog. After commercial pesticides, human medications are the 2nd most common cause of poisoning in pets. NEVER GIVE YOUR PET HUMAN MEDICATIONS without the advice of your Vet...1 extra-strength Tylenol tablet can KILL at a cat. So keep ALL medicines out of reach.

GUARD THE GARAGE: One common cause of poisoning in pets is antifreeze. It has a sweet taste pets like, especially dogs, and it is EXTREMELY toxic. One tablespoon can KILL a cat and less then a cup can KILL a small dog. DO NOT leave open containers where pets can find them. Always be sure to fix radiator leaks or other car leaks before your pet discovers the puddles.

CANCEL CHOCOLATE TREATS: For pets, chocolate is a very tasty toxin. It contains a compound called theobromine, which like caffeine, is dangerous to dogs and cats. Baking chocolate, with nearly 9 times more theobromine than milk chocolate is particularly dangerous.

PROTECT THEM FROM HOUSEPLANTS: There are a number of common house-plants that are poisonous: Philodendron, dieffenbachia, Jerusalem cherry and yew, that can cause an upset stomach or poison your pets. Usually the leaves must be swallowed to cause injury, but in some cases just chewing the leaves can cause problems. Other dangerous plants to keep away from pets: caladium, spider-plants, airplane plants, cyclamen, foxglove, dragon tree, holly, mistletoe, azalea, poinsettia, rhododendron, and mother-in-laws tongue.

CLEAN THE COAT: Not all poisons must be swallowed to cause harm. Sometimes just coming in contact with them can cause damage or even death. If your pet has gotten into something he shouldn't have, immediately give him a bath to rinse off the toxins. Rinse the area with water for at least 10 minutes before you take him to the vet. After the initial flushing, you can wash the coat with shampoo or dishwashing liquid to remove as much of the poison as possible.

GIVE HER AIR: If your pet has been exposed to high levels of carbon monoxide, natural gas or other types of gas, get her into fresh air as quickly as possible..then call your vet right away.

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: Changes in behavior..your pet may shiver or become anxious. He may lurch or stagger, have seizures or lose consciousness or he may drool excessively and paw at his mouth. Bleeding...products used to control mice or rodents often contain warfarin..a chemical that can cause bleeding.
Breathing problems, like gasping for air or panting. If your pet has been exposed to carbon monoxide his lips and gums will turn bright red.

Good evening kitties! Today's topic: LICE!

Lately it seems as though your pet's fave trick is trying to scratch herself in 3 places at once. When you take a look under her fur, what you see are 'nits'--tiny white egg casings attached to her hair shafts. This means your pet has lice.

WASH THEM AWAY: Pet stores sell a variety of shampoos containing pyrethrins..chemicals that kill lice and fleas. Look for a shampoo containing a 0.05% solution. For more serious infestations try the 0.15% solution. Wash your pet with the medicated shampoo once a week for 3 weeks..leaving the shampoo on the coat 3-5 minutes before rinsing.

PROTECT THEIR EYES: Any medicated shampoo can sting, so try not to get the lather in your pets eyes when you give her a bath. You may try smearing Vaseline on the eyelids to keep shampoo out...after your finished, wash off the Vaseline.

SEE TO HIS PALS: Since lice can travel from pet to pet, it doesn't help to treat one and ignore the others...if you have more then 1 pet in your family, be sure to treat them all, even if they do not yet have lice.

DON'T CROSS: If your cat has lice, you do not need to treat your dog, and vice versa. Lice are "Host-specific" meaning those that feed on dogs will not feed on cats.

FOLLOW UP WITH SPRAY: In addition to shampooing your pet, spray him twice a week with an OTC lice or flea spray. Sprays will kill any leftover lice that happen to hatch between shampoos.

DO THE POWDER: While lice powders usually aren't as effective as sprays, they can still assist in the eradication effort.Apply powder from head to toe{and tail}..do not put powder on the face from the box, use your fingers and rub gently around eyes and nose.

GO FOR THE SOURCE: Even if your pet is lice-free, she can still be reinfested by lice waiting on floors, carpet or bedding. To Prevent this, it's a good idea to wash your pets bedding. Also wash grooming tools, kennels or pet carriers.

STOP THE ITCH: The same stuff you take for hay fever, {Benedryl} can also provide itch control for your pet. Ask your vet for the proper dosage for your pets.

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: In severe cases, a pet could lose 1/4 of her blood volume within several weeks, causing anemia or even shock. Symptoms include weakness, drowsines &, white inside the pets mouth..it is critical to see the Vet asap if you notice any of these symptoms.

TOMORROW: POISONING!!!

Good evening kitties!! This evenings topic: BLEEDING!!!

For dogged dogs and curious cats, minor and messy cuts and scrapes are anything but rare. They can step on glass, bash into sharp objects or get caught on barbed wire. In most cases, a little first-aid, and perhaps some reassurance is all they need!

PRESS ON THE WOUND: With any wound, the first thing to do is stop the bleeding. Using a hanker-chief, a towel or a clean cloth, apply firm pressure directly over the wound. The bleeding will usually slow down in a few minutes.

FORGET THE TOURNIQUET: A lot of limbs have been lost because the blood supply was cut off for too long.

GIVE HIM A TRIM: Once you have the bleeding under control, it's a good idea to trim the hair around the wound, using scissors or an electric trimmers. This will keep the wound clean and help speed up the healing process.

PROTECT YOURSELF: An injured animal is a scared animal. If you suspect there's even a small chance you might get bitten, it would be a smart idea to muzzle your pet. For small dogs and cats, you can protect yourself by wrapping them in a towel or pillowcase.

CLEAN IT WELL: The danger from most wounds isn't necessarily the bleeding but the infection that may set in later. To prevent this, thoroughly wash the wound with warm water and anti-bacterial soap. Flush for at 5-minutes.

SMEAR ON PROTECTION: Once the wound is clean, applying an OTC antibiotic ointment like Neosporin will prevent infection.

WRAP IT UP: To keep the would clean and protected, it's a good idea to wrap it with gauze. Just make sure you do not wrap it too tight. About once a day, remove the bandage and clean the wound with lukewarm water, then reapply the antibiotic ointment and wrap it back up.

PAUSE FOR PAWS: While paw injuries are usually not serious, they can bleed a lot. Slipping a clean white sock over the paw will help keep the wound and your floors clean until the bleeding stops.

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: If the wound is deep and there's an excessive amount of blood, you need an experts care. Deep wounds, which involve tendons and muscle, often cause severe blood loss and increase the risk of infection. Your pet could need a transfusion as well as stitches and an anesthesia.

TOMORROW: LICE

Back to business today! Our topic is: CHEWING!!! I wonder if toe nibbling is considered 'chewing'?

Dogs are born chewers and when the urge strikes, anything not tacked down will do. Even cats, which tend to use their nails to carve paths of destruction, will sometimes sick their teeth in such things and carpets or computer cords, etc.

JUST SAY NO--Letting your pet get away with chewing even once can set the stage for a lifetime of bad habits. When you catch your pet chewing something he shouldn't, say "NO!". Then replace the object with an appropriate chew toy and praise him when he takes interest in it.

ROTATE HIS TOYS: Instead of lavishing her with a dozen of her favorite toys all at once, give them to her one or two at a time, then exchange them every couple of days.

MAKE THE GOOD BETTER: Particularly when they're young, pets can't always figure out why it's okay to chew rawhide but wrong to feast on the Corinthian leather couch...to help him figure this out, it helps to make his toys really appealing...try coating his toy with peanut butter{dogs} or soak it in beef or chicken broth{cats & dogs}, or you may try rubbing it between your own hands to put your scent all over it....when he starts chewing the toy, praise him immensely.

MAKE THE BAD THINGS BITTER: If your cat or dog persists in chewing things he shouldn't, try using pet repellent. Pet store sell a variety of of repellents. Just wipe it on the furniture or spray it on objects you want him to leave alone. Pets do not like the bitter taste, so they will learn quickly.

HAVE BAD SCENTS: Most pets dislike the scents of perfumes and colognes, so mix a little perfume with water and then spray it on things you don'y want your pet to chew.

HIDE YOUR SHOES: People often wonder why pets always seem to go for their fave belongings. The reason is quite simple..they smell like you. Your pet thrives on your scent, especially when you're gone. Shoes are especially a favorite of dogs as leather is fun to chew...so keep your shoes out of your pets reach...cats will sometimes hide 'treasures' in your shoes, so beware!
