♥ This Honor was so unXpected, but very sweet since mom had to take me to see Dr. Lisa late Thursday (12-11) afternoon! I was not a HAPPY boy and boy did I let her know! MOL! I meowed all the way there and back home. Mom thought I might have had a UTI, but my Urinalysis came back clear. Dr. Lisa was looking and cleaning me and I tried to bite her. It's suspected I have an infection in my Urethra (my peepee) so I got a Convenia injection and sent home with Panalog ointment for mom to TRY to put on my peepee area twice a day.
By the way, I gained TWO pounds since July which mom's not happy cuz now I am at 24.6 pounds! I almost forgot to tell you I left mom a smelly gift in the carrier on our way home! MOL!

♥ Mom told dad I am to be cut back on my food including NO MORE human food that he's always giving me! BUZZ OFF MOM! I'm feeling much better & yes, mom's still applying that ointment on me, but Thursday is the last day for it!

♥ Thank you for such an Honor with my 4th Cat of the Day Badge on 12/12/2014! Mom doesn't know how I got it since I only had a few votes that day! Thank you also for the sweet gifts and yummies (which mom took them all away from me), the cool balloons and toys along with all your friendships and prayers.

♥ Not only did I win COTD that day, but it was also my sibling NeuBee's #123633 6 year Adoptiversary then on 12/13 our doggie Carly #11000 won her 5th DOTD which was also another surprise. Mom finally got the Thank Yous done for NeuBee then Carly's so now it's just me left to do!

Today's topic: HIVES!

When your pets hind legs starts whirling like a propeller and you hear that 'thump, thump, thump' on the floor, you know there's something itchy going on.

TRY AN ANTIHISTAMINE: OTC medications like Benedryl block the effects of histamine, a body chemical that causes itching. Call your vet before administering it, he will recommend the proper dosage for your pet.

SCRATCH THE OINTMENTS: While topical medications like calamine or hydrocortisone cream can help relieve itching, they are not effective on pets and the animals will usually lick it off.

HANDS OFF: Rare is the cat or dog that won't appreciate your giving him an assertive scratch. In the case of hives, however, scratching only makes the itching worse, so keep your hands to yourself and do not scratch your pet.

TEST THINGS AROUND YOUR HOME: Pets can be allergic to everyday house-hold products, like soaps, shampoo, cleaning products, etc, or even to your deodorant. If you notice your pet itching after using something, try another product..this can take time, so you will have to be patient.

TRY DIFFERENT DIETS: Some pets are allergic to ingredients in pet foods. Try different formulas until you find one he can eat without an allergic reaction. You can also get creative and make your own. Cats especially like rabbit meat and cooked rice.

Your vet may also recommend a commercially prepared food made especially for allergic pets and they come in different varieties.

TOMORROW: COUGHING!!!

Good afternoon kitties. Today's topic is: BLADDER CONTROL PROBLEMS:!!

Few things are less savory than discovering an unpleasant odor emanating from your potted plants or a puddle in your living room. Oh no, she has done it again. It is normal for puppies and kittens to make mistakes. But when your grown up pet has suddenly stopped making it to litter box or back yard on time, there could be something physically wrong.

HOLD THE NIGHTCAP: To help keep floors dry while you sleep, try putting out only a small amount of water at night. Don't stop the water entirely. For some pets going without water can be dangerous.

PROVIDE EXTRA BATHROOMS: When Fluffy has poor control, the last thing she needs is a litter box that's far away. To make sure she can get relief when she needs it, have an extra litter box on every floor.

KEEP IT TIDY: Even desperate cats can be finicky, and if the litter isn't kept clean, they refuse to use it. Clean out your cats boxes with each bowel movement, or at least once a day.

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: While even the best-behaved pet can have accidents, a sudden change for the worse could mean trouble. Pets that urinate frequently or in all the wrong places could have a bladder infection, diabetes, hormone imbalance or even kidney failure.

Call your vet if any changes in your pets usual habits persist for more then 2 days or if the urine is discolored or if it's difficult for her to go.

Good afternoon kitties. Today's topic is: MATTED COATS!!

Is your pet having a bad hair day? Is her coat all gnarly and matted??? It's not much fun getting tangled up with matted fur. Hundreds of hairs can be involved in just one mat.

KEEP HER DRY: Once your pets matted hair gets wet, if they get wet, they will be even more difficult to remove. So keep her dry until you get the mats out.

LET FINGERS DO THE WALKING: Untangling a mat takes patience, but it can be done. Starting at the ends of the hairs and working inward--hair by hair if necessary--divide the mat in half with your fingers. Then divide it in quarters and pull til they come out. Then run a comb through the hair to make her coat smooth.

GIVE MATS THE BRUSH OFF: Your pets brush can be a great mat-fighter. Beginning near the tips of the hair and using short rapid strokes, gently brush upward. As the hair gets smooth, gradually work your way down toward the skin.

COAX THEM OUT WITH CORNSTARCH: A light sprinkling of cornstarch makes stubborn mats easier to pull apart. It helps the hair glide right out of the mat. As you work, add more cornstarch as needed.

SLIDE THEM OUT WITH SPRAY: Pet stores sell sparys made specifically for detangling mats. They typically contain lanolin, which helps hairs glide out of the mat. Make sure to get "Feline Friendly" if used for cats.

TAKE IT IN STAGES: If your pet has more than one mat or one large mat that's particularly tough, it's a good idea to do the job in stages. Work on them 10 minutes at a time, then give your pet extra love and maybe a special treat.

GET THEE TO A GROOMER: Professional groomers have special tools to help untangle tough mats. It's important to remember that even groomers sometimes give up and take a shortcut.

BRUSH HIM UP: Once your pet is mat-free, giving him a daily brushing will help keep his coat smooth. Since every pets coats are different, ask your local pet store for the best brush to use on your pet.

GET HER IN CONDITION: Using a conditioner will help keep your pets coat smooth and healthy. Apply the conditioner once a week. Follow label instructions and for cats, make sure it is "Feline Friendly".

TAKE A SHORT CUT: One fool-proof way to prevent matting is to keep your pets coat short. It's much better in the long run to prevent mats and having to get rid of them.

Tomorrow: BLADDER CONTROL PROBLEMS!!!

Good afternoon kitties. Mom is tired today, no sleep last night, worked all day today, so hopefully we will spell properly here: {MOL} Today's topic: WOUNDS!

In your view, she may be mans best friend, and he may be a purrfect pet. Unfortunately, the other critters in your neighborhood may not hold your four-legged friend in the same high regard! So when nasty things happen to your companion, like wounds, abscesses and bleeding, here are some tips:

TAKE PRECAUTIONS: Experts recommend muzzling your furry friend before treating injuries. If you happen to touch the sore area, he may lash out and bite. If you have no muzzle, try rolling gauze around her mouth and under her chin and tie it behind her ears.

TRY WRAPPING HER UP: If your pet is too small to muzzle, try wrapping her up in a towel, pillowcase or blanket before beginning treatment. To avoid making it difficult for her to breathe, don't wrap her too tight or for too long.

FIRST AID COMES FIRST: Stop the bleeding is number 1. As soon as possible, apply firm pressure to the wound with your hand or a clean piece of cloth....maintain the pressure until the bleeding stops. If the bleeding doesn't stop within 10 minutes, take your pet to the Vet right away.

MAKE THE FUR FLY: Once bleeding is under control, the next step is to clean the wound thoroughly. Start by trimming away any fur around the wound. TRY using an electric clippers if you have one, they are best for removing the fur without accidentally gouging the animal.

PASTE ON PROTECTION: To prevent fresh clipped hairs from falling into the wound, coat it with water soluble K-Y jelly. The hairs with stick to the jelly and can easily be washed away.

DO SOME DEEP CLEANING: Flush deep cuts or punctures with warm water to expel germ-covered hair or debris that might contaminate the wound. Soap and water are best, you may also apply a thin coat of triple antibiotic ointment.

BUBBLES MEAN TROUBLE: Never use an antiseptic such as Hydrogen Peroxide or rubbing alcohol because they further irritate the injured tissue.

LET 'EM LICK: When dogs & cats get injured, their tongues automatically go to work. Do not interfere with nature. plan. Licking does no harm and it may actually help heal the wound.

WATCH OUT FOR ABSCESSES: While most minor wounds will heal on their own, occasionally an abscess will form. An abscess is a pocket of pus beneath the skin in indicates infection. See your vet if you see an abscess on your pet...The Vet will probably need to drain the abscess and give your furry friend an oral antibiotic.

TOMORROW: MATTED COATS!!!

Friday purrs
t's a very damp, foggy day in our area with temps still below 30. Hopefully tomorrow will bring some sunshine to help warm things up.
The Christmas decorating is finally done...woohoo! The kids finished up the tree in the living room last night. Now all that's left is for mom to sweep all the glitter up & put the last box back in the closet before furless Risten comes tomorrow. He's starting to wriggle around a lot & will soon be crawling so all of us that stay out when he's here will have to really start watching our tails! The main one to be wary will be Monkey since she insists on giving him kisses, but Patches likes to rub against him too so she'll also be on the 'grab' list! The rest of us generally hide out in the bedroom until he's gone...MOL!

I'd like to thank all of you that came by with condolences on the loss of my half-brother Davey! Your hugs, soft purrs, prayers & words of comfort have once again helped us get through hard times...& are lovingly, deeply appreciated. I imagine he's giving the other angels a good run by this time since he was always so full of energy...MOL! He was a tom cat through & through, yet gentle & sweet toward humans & his outside furfamily, so we know he'll make lots of new angel furiends as he flies through the clouds.

Well got to get pouncing so mom can pull out the noisy sweeper monster & finish putting things away. We should be back to normal (if there is such a thing) blogging again next week so will meow at you more then. Have a purrfectly pawtastic weekend!

Good afternoon Kitties. I hope you all had a peaceful night! Today's topic is: VOMITING!

Sure, it's a dog-eat-dog world out there. But it's also a dog-eat-garbage & cat-eats-dead-mouse world. While dogs and cats usually vomit because of dumpster-diving, eating too much or eating to fast can upset their tummies.

GIVE HIM FAST RELIEF: When your pet is vomiting, his stomach needs a time-out. Don't give him food for 24-hours. A short fast may be all it takes to get his tummy back to normal...if he is still vomiting after 24 hours, call your vet.

FILL THE WATER BOWL: Once the worse is over, encourage your pet to drink water during his fast. The last thing you want is a dehydrated pet.

LET HER LICK ICE: If water makes them queasy, give him an ice cube. He will lick it slowly and it usually stays down. Put the ice cube in your pets bowl or on the floor, make sure the water stays down, then you can give him a cube every 15 minutes.

KEEP THE LID DOWN: To prevent your pet from drinking too much, keep your toilet lid down, especially if you use chemical fresheners, or your pet could walk away with a tummy full of bacteria.

MAKER HER MENU BLAND: After fasting for 24 hours, your pet may be ravenous for food. Start with a bland diet to gently work his system back into digesting. You can mix 2 parts of cooked white rice with one part cottage cheese or boiled skinless breast. Feed him small amounts every 4 hours, after a few days, if he holds it down, you can go back to his normal diet.

BRING IT BACK SLOWLY: After 2 days on the bland diet, you can start re-introducing his usual fare. Mix 1 part of the bland with his regular meal everyday for 4 days until he is back to normal.

CALM IT WITH KAOPECTATE: Even after the vomiting stops, your pet may not be feeling up to par. Kaopectate will soothe her tummy. Ask your vet for the recommended dosage for you pet.

DOGS ONLY: GET IN THE PINK: Giving your dog Pepto-Bismol will help soothe his tummy just as it does yours. Give 1 teaspoon for every 20 pounds of dogs weight.
NEVER GIVE Pepto-Bismol to cats. It contains ingredients cats don't metabolize well, so it can make them sicker.

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: If your pet is lethargic, disoriented & stumbling around like he's drunk, and throwing up a lot more then usual, call your vet immediately...your pet may have consumed a poisonous plant or gotten into some anti-freeze.

TOMORROW: DENTAL PROBLEMS!

Hi K. Barney and family
I truly appreciate your coming by to congratulate me on my COTD win November 23 and 24 (thanks to CC’s technical glitch!).

It was such an unexpected and wonderful win, and I so enjoyed all the goodies and best wishes from you. The catnip muffins were so yummy.

I so love my new family, even the Queen is coming around...she actually “allowed” me to share Momma’s lap with her a few nights ago. I try to play chase with all my sissies, but they are still a little unsure of my intentions. Momma says I am the most playful “kitten” she has ever seen, and so loving. For an old man of 13, I am full of energy and headbonks. The only thing Momma says drives her insane is my constant meowing at feeding times – for the 10 minutes it takes her or daddy to get the bowls ready, I never shut up for one second! What’s a migraine?

Again, thank you so much for the warm welcome and for the honor of COTD.

Life is Good!

Headbonks, CIRRUS

Good afternoon kitties. Today's topic is all about our eating habits: FUSSY EATING!

You probably remember Morris, the finicky feline whose fussy eating catapulted him to commercial fame. If you have your own "Morris" at home and he turns his nose up at everything you have to offer, here are some tips to perk up his taste-buds.

WALK AWAY AT MEALTIME: Instead of begging your pet to eat, put his meal down on the floor and walk away, when he gets hungry enough, he will eat it {says who?}

SET A TIME LIMIT: If your pet isn't finished eating in an hour, pick up the food and put it away...try again at a later time, but only leave it out 1 hour...when your pet realizes if he doesn't eat he will go hungry, he will eat rather then starve.

TABLE THE SCRAPS: While you pet loves leftovers and mealtime handouts, those rich goodies may be spoiling his appetite...would you eat cat/dog food if you knew you were getting steak, chops, chicken or burger every night?

SOME LIKE IT HOT: If your pet walks away from dry kibble, try adding warm water. This will soften the food and make it more appealing. Who doesn't enjoy a nice warm meal?

TANTALIZE HER TASTE BUDS: If your pet refuses to eat, try something a little different, try putting scraps of roast beef or burger in her food and mix it up. Don't overdo it as you might wind up with a plump pet.

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: You know there's a problem when you whip up Fluffy or Fido's fave meal and he doesn't even want to take a lick. Most of the time it isn't nothing to worry about, some dogs can go 3-4 days without food...could be he has a tummy ache.

With cats however, liver function can be impaired even after short periods without food. So if Fluffy hasn't eaten in 2 days, take her to the Vet. Your Vet can discover why kitty isn't eating and recommend treatment!

QUEEN KELS KAT REMEDIES
Good afternoon kitties. Today we are discussing Animal bites to humans. Topic suggested by sisters, Dayzee, Duchess & Mischief.

Here's what to do if your 4-legged friend gets unfriendly.

NEVER PULL AWAY FROM A CAT: If your cat has your hand in his mouth, NEVER try to pull it away, he will think you are 'prey' and bite harder, instead, wait til he stops biting, or he may bite down damaging your muscles and tendons.
If you happen to have a spray bottle handy, you can spray Fluffy in the face, most cats do not enjoy being sprayed in the face and will run.

DO NOT WRESTLE WITH YOUR CAT: Unlike dogs, cats do not enjoy play wrestling, he may consider you attacking him and bite..if you try to pull your hand away suddenly he will bite down hard.

NEVER TRY TO PET A GROWLING CAT: If your cat is growling, he is probably angry and will swipe you or try to bite. Instead wait til kitty calms down and starts growling, then talk to her gently and then try to pet, if she growls, take your hand away.

TIPS IF ANIMALS BITE YOU:

ASSESS THE DAMAGE: Seek medical help for all bites except those that are minor.

THOROUGHLY WASH THE BITE: Animal bites--especially from cats--may transmit infection. Cleanse the wound thoroughly with warm water and soap to remove saliva, continue washing for a full 5 minutes.

CONTROL BLEEDING: If there is minor bleeding, cover the entire wound with a sterile gauze. You may put some ice against the gauze and elevate the wound above heart level to help stop bleeding.

BANDAGE THE AREA: When bleeding has stopped, cover the bite with a sterile bandage or clean cloth, tie or tape it loosely in place.

REDUCE PAIN: Use aspirin or acetaminophen to reduce pain. This is appropriate even if the bite did not break not break the skin., then apply ice if any swelling occurs.

GET A TETANUS SHOT: Any animal bite can lead to tetanus, so if you haven't had a shot in the past years, get one now!

SEE YOUR DR IMMEDIATELY: if you see redness, it feels hot to the touch or oozing or you think the bite is infected, see your DR ASAP....he will recommend an antibiotic and a course of treatment for you.

If you got bit by animal not your own, contact the animals owner to be sure if he is up to date on his rabies vaccine.

QUEEN KELS KAT REMEDIES
Good afternoon kitties! Hope you all had a pawsome weekend! Today's topic is: ALLERGIES!

Dogs & cats with allergies...you bet!!! Like their owners, many pets are sensitive to airborne annoyances--not just pollen or mold but also such things as dust, feathers and wool. Unlike humans, animals do not suffer from fever, red runny eyes and noses to sneezing attacks, but they do get all itchy.

CALM IT WITH COOL WATER: Giving your pet a cool-water soak{NO WAY!!} is a quick way to ease itchy skin.Bathe your pet for 5-10 minutes..make sure the water is cool, not cold or too warm, warm water aggravates the itch.

EASE IT WITH OATMEAL: To make soaks additionally soothing, vets sometimes recommend adding colloidal oatmeal{like Aveeno} to the bath water, it will help calm the crankiest itch!

ALLEVIATE WITH ANTIHISTAMINES: You can often bring allergies under control with antihistamines. Your vet may recommend an OTC drug like diphenhydramine {Benedryl} Your vet will tell you how much to give your pet.

SUBDUE IT WITH SUPPLEMENTS: To help calm itchy skin, try giving your pet fatty acid supplements which are used for relieving mange and other skin disorders. Your vet can recommend what type to give your pet.

KEEP HER INDOORS: In the Spring/Summer, Pollen is in the air--and in your furry friends coat and airways as well. To prevent pollen from pushing your pet around, keep her indoors as much as possible during pollen peak hours....early morning and evenings.

SMOOTH THE ROUGH EDGES: Carpet, heavy drapes and upholstery are variable magnets for dust & pollen. Try keeping your pets area free of drapes and carpet, you can use vinyl blinds over the windows.

CLEAN OFTEN: Daily cleaning will not eliminate dust and pollen, but it will keep it manageable. It is also a good idea to clean your pets bedding once a week. It is also a good idea to change your furnace/AC filters monthly.

LOOK TO THE LITTER: Many litter's contain chemical scents to make your cats bathroom smelling pretty...for you--not her. Try buying scentless and dust free litter.

FOR THOSE WITH DOGS: Dogs with allergies occasionally suffer from itchy feet and soaking them in Epsom salts can bring much relief. Fill the tub with just enough water to cover paws. Dissolve several cups of Epsom salts crystals in the water...stand your dog in the tub for 5-10 minutes, then gently dry her feet.

TOMORROW: When Fido or Fluffy you their humans!

Thanks, K. Barney & family!
Actually, it WAS just yesterday I had my Adoptiversary. Well it was last week, and my special picture is still up from it. So time doesn't fly quite as fast as it looks like, mol.

Wow, I am really humbled to be in the special window the day after such a noble kitty as Angel K. Thomas! Thank you for coming to help me celebrate my 2nd COTD badge. I was just a little baby last year when I got my first one and would you believe I was actually afraid of it? I was such a goofball little kit!

So for my COTD, Mom said I could choose any ornament I wanted from the tree she put up yesterday, and take it down to play with it. Well, she didn’t actually SAY that, but that’s what I heard and today I captured my very first tree ornament. Mom made me let it go. Darn!

But what she doesn’t know is that I have a secret stash of Christmas tree balls and candy canes. I’ll set up the goal nets and we can play hockey. Gingerbread men are in goal, and when the game’s over we get to eat them with hot chocolate! Come on over, let’s have as much fun as we can before Mom catches us! -- Mojo Blackbear

Good Morning kitties. Today's topic is: ASTHMA

It wasn't so long ago the only thing in your yard faster then your cat was the occasional fly lucky enough to get away. These days, even short outdoor romps are triggering asthma attacks causing wheezing, coughing and fatigue.

SHAVE OFF A FEW POUNDS: While every cat should be 'fit & trim', it's particularly important for cats with asthma. The signs of asthma can be worse if kitty is obese.

CRANK UP THE HUMIDIFIER: Breathing dry air irritates the airways, which can trigger attacks. Try putting a vaporizer or a humidifier to boost humidity levels to between 30 - 40%.

KICK THE HABIT: Surely your cat doesn't smoke, but 2nd hand smoke from you or your friends can make the problem worse. Pets are more vulnerable to smoke then people.

BRING HIM INDOORS: If you suspect hay fever is kicking off his attacks, it might help to keep him indoors at the height of pollen season.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT LITTER: Most cat litters puff up the dust whenever Fluffy starts to dig. Look for dust-free litter or use sand instead.

DO EXTRA CLEANING: Even small amounts of floating dirt & dust can trigger an attack, so it's important to keep your cats area squeaky clean.

FILTER OUT THE PROBLEM: If your home is heated & Cooled with a central system, consider installing an electrostatic filter...They can be expensive, but they do filter out some types of particles.

TRY SUPPLEMENTAL PROTECTION: Some vets believe that giving cats antioxidant vitamins, which apparently help 'neutralize' harmful oxygen molecules in the body, can help relieve a number of health problems, including asthma. Give your cat a childs does of Vitamin C or E once a week. Just crumble it up and put it in her food.

CALM KITTY'S KARMA: Asthma has long been linked to stress in pets as well as people. When asthma is flaring, it might be a good idea to nix activities that upset your feline, like going to the groomer or vacuuming the floor.

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: If your cat has just started coughing or wheezing, and has had asthma before, but the symptoms are getting worse, don't take chances. Call your vet right away...he can recommend what treatment is best for your feline friend.

TOMORROW: BITING.

Mom is feeling quite a bit better today so she said I could finally meow at everyfur! Guess that means she'll finally be decorating for Christmas this weekend. That means boxes filled with sparkly things & extra temptations for Piggy & Sneakers...MOL! We're not sure how they'll be with the tree yet but if the past reputations of the rest of us are any indication then they'll be in trouble...MOL! It was just last year that mom found me in the middle of it with Trixie on branches below & Monkey above. Mom is hoping all of us 'older' kitties have outgrown the urge to climb the tree & play with the pretty ornaments but we only get the chance once a year. That means highly unlikely we'll be good all of the time mom...MOL! Mom got a lot of on-line shopping for the kids done this morning so when things start arriving we'll also 'help' with the wrapping.
Rain is heading our way in a few minutes so can't be on CC too long since the dog is outside & will need to come in before it starts, but wanted to let everyone know that mom is better & I should be able to blog normally next week.

Gotta run for now so I can see what the kittens are up to...& if they need a good chasing...MOL! Have a pawtastic weekend dear furiends!

QUEEN KELS KAT REMEDIES
Good afternoon kitties, today's topic is all about the JEALOUSY we all feel in multi-pet households!

Life with your pet used to be rosy. But these days the emotional hue is more jealousy. either a new human mate, a new baby or even another pet has entered your life. While pets don't jealousy the same as people do, that's not to say your little darlings don't feel a tad jealous.

DON'T DEMOTE HIM: No one enjoys being the bottom dog{or cat}, so try to make your pet feel special and loved before the source of the stress came into your life.

FEED HER FIRST: If a new pet is causing your pet to see 'green', be sure to give the 'original' pet top priority. No matter how irresistible a new pet may be, alwys feed your 1st pet first. Do the same when giving attention.

TREAD GENTLY: You might think that the new person in your life is making your furry friend jealous, but in fact he could be feeling fear. Have your new friend speak gently to your pet. With cats, be patient and him make the 1st move. The person should never approach the cat 1st and insist on being friends, that will never work.

FOR CATS ONLY!!!
PUT HER ON A PEDESTAL: It's important to realize cats feel more secure when they have a high vantage point. So make sure your cat has a place to climb to where she can sit and watch what is going on. If you can't add shelving to your walls buy cat trees which are readily available at most retailers and pet stores, or if you really feel creative, make your own, but be sure to carpet it and use some sisal rope as well.

MAKE INTRODUCTIONS SLOWLY: If you just got a new pet, don't don't give him the run of the house immediately. This will make your first cat go nuts. Keep the cats in separate areas for a day or two. Then trade off their areas so they get used to each other's scent. If the cats seem alright after 2 days, let them 'meet' face to face. However if they start growling and hissing, keep them separated for another few days..keep this up til the hissing stops...soon they will learn to live together in harmony.

FIGHTS: If 2 cats go at it in a fight, NEVER try to put your hand in the middle to break it up, you may be bitten or scratched. One sure way to get them separated is to keep a squirt bottle on hand, most cats hate to be squirted and will separate and run.

Good evening kitties..today's topic is: FEVER!!!

You always knew your pet was 'hot-stuff', but today he really does seem to be over heating. Worse, he's moping around and doesn't even want to eat. What's turning up the heat??

It could be a virus...take your pets' temperature...the NORMAL body temp for dogs and cats is between 100.5* - 102.5*, if the thermometer registers over over 103* you can bet they are getting sick.

PRESS AWAY THE HEAT: One soothing way to lower your pets temperature is with cool water compresses. Soak a washcloth in cold water and wring it out and gently pat your pets belly. You can also use isopropyl alcohol...alcohol evaporates quickly from the skin.

RUN A COOL BATH: {I say run for the hills and hide} If your cat will hold still for it, putting her in a cool {NOT cold} bath for 10 minutes will help bring down the fever.

GIVE HIM A WRAP AROUND: To lower fever in a cat or a small dog, just place a towel soaked in cool water around him. Most will enjoy the coolness.

KEEP THE WATER BOWL FULL: A pet with a fever runs the risk of dehydration, so it's important to keep his water bowl full of fresh cold water at all times. If he doesn't want to drink, give him an ice cube instead.

ASK ABOUT ASPIRIN: While many vets are cautious when it comes to giving human medication to pets, aspirin can sometimes be used to help bring a fever down. Ask your vet before giving any aspirin to your pet and he will recommend the correct dosage.

DOES THE NOSE KNOW: just as we check a childs temp by feeling his forehead, we check our pets noses when they are feeling ill. While dogs and cats appreciate the attention, the nose is not an accurate gauge of temperature .

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: While most fevers are caused by minor viral infections, they can also be a sign of something more serious, such as hepatitis, pneumonia or Lyme Disease.

TO CHECK PETS TEMP: Lightly coat a rectal thermometer with petroleum jelly, holding the thermometer in one hand, your pets in the other, gently slide the thermometer two-thirds of it's length into the rectum. If the temp is over 103*, call your vet immediately.

Good afternoon Kitties! Today's topic is: DEHYDRATION!!!

You wouldn't know it to look at her, but your pet is a veritable ocean of water. She needs all that fluid to keep her tissues moist and to transport ions, proteins and essential nutirents throughout her body.

Symptoms of dehydration include: dry mouth, sunken eyes, loss of elasticity in the skin and extreme exhaustion.

MOISTEN HER MUZZLE: While dogs and cats do not sweat much--they have only a few sweat glands between their toes--they can lose a lot of fluid through panting. To make sure your pet always has enough to drink, it's a good idea to keep 2 water bowls filled all the time, that way she will always have plenty to drink.

DON'T LET HIM GUZZLE: If your pet has gone a long time without water, letting him gulp down the entire bowl of water at once may result in vomiting.

ELECTROLYTE UP HER LIFE: Dehydration can cause your pet to lose electrolytes, minerals like potassium and sodium that transmit electrical impulses throughout the body. Try giving your pet Pedialyte, you can find it in most stores.

POUR A SPORTS DRINK: If your hot dog or cat seems reluctant to drink, try tempting him with an electrolyte-containing sports drink such as Gatorade. Some pets have a thing for sweet, fruity flavors.

LET HER LICK ICE: Pets that have gone a long time without water may have trouble keeping fluids down. A helpful alternative is to give her and ice cube.

GET WATER TO GO: To prevent dehydration from occurring, it's important to provide your pet with water even when you're away from the house. When and if you travel with your pets try keeping a no-spill water container in the car. Pet stores sell a variety of no-spill containers.

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: To test for dehydration, pull up the skin on your pets back, if it pulls up loose and lax, he could be dangerously low on fluids and should be seen by his VET right away!

KELS KAT REMEDIES
Good evening kitties: Today's topic is "The Treed Kitty"..never been up a tree, pursonnaly, but Jesse has!

Rather he's chasing birds, escaping from dogs, or simply catching a high-altitude snooze, one of the cats favorite activities is climbing trees.

DON'T RALLY 'ROUND THE TREE: Just because your cat is out on a limb doesn't mean he needs your help. In fact, he'd probably prefer it if you'd go away and leave him alone.

GIVE HER TIME: While it's not impossible for a cat to be truly stuck in a tree, chances are he just hasn't gotten around to coming down yet. Most cats are fully capable of coming down by themselves....if kitty doesn't come down by dark, you may need to go get her as she may be attacked wild animals like a raccoon.

TEMPT HIS TASTE BUDS: Even cats in trees get hungry, and putting some of his favorite food where he can see and smell it may get him down.

MOUNT A RESCUE MISSION: If your cat is tyoo scared to come down on his own, the easiest thing to do is climb the tree and get him. If the tree is not easy to climb, get a ladder.

DON PROTECTION: A treed cat is a scared cat, and many people have been bitten and scratched trying to rescue a scared cat. Wear heavy gloves and a jacket to protect your hands and arms.

GO FOR THE NECK: When grabbing a scared cat, it's best to catch the skin on the back of her neck, This is the same place mom-kitty uses when she carries kittens...most cats will go limp once grabbed by the scruff of the neck.

MAKE IT COUNT: When grabbing a treed cat, make sure you don't miss. If you miss and don't get a good grasp, chances are he will climb higher.

CALL THE PROS: If kitty has been in the tree fort more then 24 hours and still doesn't come down and your efforts failed, it's time to call the pros....call your local Humane Society or Animal Rescue.

BUILD A STAIRCASE: If your cat frequently get 'stuck' in the same tree, you can make life easier for both of you by nailing up a few boards, this will give your climbing feline something to grab when climbing or descending.

KEEP HIM AWAY: If kitty only seems to have trouble getting down from one tree, you can try to barricade the tree, try surrounding the tree with wire mesh, just make sure it's high enough so kitty can't jump over it.

TOMORROW: DEHYDRATION

KELS KAT REMEDIES
Good afternoon kitties. Today's topic is: DEPRESSION!!!

No one greets you at the door. The rattle of the leash goes un-noticed. Even the scent of food doesn't get Fido or Fluffy coming. It's not uncommon for pets to come down with depression! Causes might be from illness, loneliness, losing a friend or seasonal.

MAKE EVERY DAY A PLAY DAY: Throwing yourself into some wholehearted play with your pet is perhaps the best way for her to take her mind off her troubles. Get on the floor, tickle her tummy and just be silly.

INCLUDE HIM IN YOUR FUN: If you've recently had a new baby, don't separate the baby from the pet, instead include him in the fun, allow your pet to sniff baby and lay with baby. If you pay too much attention to baby and ignore pet, you are asking for problems.

PLANT SURPRISES: Try hiding some of her favorite treats so she has to 'hunt' for them, this will give Fido or Fluffy to do instead of sitting around moping.

CALL HOME: Dogs and cats may feel lonely when left home alone all day. To perk up your pet, periodically call home and leave a message on the answering machine..hearing your voice will do wonders.

CHEER HER UP WITH MUSIC: Both Dogs and Cats often enjoy music and are less likely to feel depressed when something pleasant is playing. Try leaving the radio on if you are gone all day!

GIVE HIM TIME TO MOURN: It's not uncommon for pets to mourn when they lose a companion....in some cases, they can suffer deep depression. Pet's demonstrate a deep love for one another, just as people do. There is no instant cure for grief, give your pet plenty of time to mourn, give him plenty of love and attention as soon he will bounce back!

BRING HOME A NEW FRIEND: While it's not possible to 'replace' a friend, many pets will feel better when another furry friend joins the home, it will give them another companion to play with.

FOR CATS ONLY:
GIVE A ROOM WITH A VIEW: Without a lot of stimulation, many cats get bored and depressed. To help Fluffy stay entertained, make sure she has a window sill or a cat perch. She can watch birds, butterflies and even people and kitty will be entertained for hours.

Good evening kitties. Today's topic: FIGHTING. Suggested by my sister, KALI!

Every night your cat goes out looking for trouble--and comes back looking he tangled with a blender. While fighting is scary to watch and dangerous for the combatants, it's extremely common!

DON'T GET IN THE MIDDLE: Dogs and cats in the heat of battle aren't discriminating about what or who they bite. Many owners have been mauled while trying to break up a fight, so keep your hands clear. If you feel you must break up a fight, throw a blanket over them, this will protect your hands.

GO DEEP & LOUD: When you see a fight brewing, interrupt the aggression with the loudest, deepest "NO" you can muster. Pets associate a low-pitched voice with a threatening growl and will take it more seriously.

GIVE THEM A BLAST: If the squabble occurs in the vicinity of a garden hose, turn it on your fighting pets...this will "cool" them off.

SIT OUT MINOR BRAWLS: When dogs or cats meet, you can expect a certain amount of posturing, hissing, growling, or tussling. In most cases it is their way of getting acquainted. Even if they start squabbling, chances are the ruckus will calm down in a minute or 2.

FOR CATS ONLY!!

GIVE THEM SEPARATE QUARTERS: Bringing a new cat into the family can raise tension for both the newcomer and the the resident cat. To keep fights to a minimum, provide separate litter boxes, and feed them in separate rooms til they get used to each other.

PROVIDE AN EASY EXIT: When bringing 2 cats together for the 1st time, make sure there is an escape route. This will help prevent them from feeling trapped.

GET THEM IN TWOS: If you want to have 2 or more cats, get them at the same time as kittens. Cats that grow up together are less likely to fight then those they meet later in life.

KEEP THEM INDOORS: If you really love your cat[s] keep her indoors...if you must put them outdoors, build an outdoor enclosure or kitty playground!

TOMORROW: DEPRESSION!

Good afternoon kitties. Todays topic is "EAR MITES". Suggested by: COMMISH CASER!!!

A gentle pat behind the ears no longer brings a grin to your furry friends face. Instead it fires up a scratching frenzy that sends her back legs whirling like an eggbeater.

Ear mites are readily passed between animals, so unless your pet spends most of her time alone, they can be difficult to prevent.

CLEAR THE DEBRIS: When treating your pet for ear mites, it is important to clear away the crust inside the ear before using medication, otherwise the mites will tale cover underneath the crust. Using a small dropper, deposit several drops of mineral oil inside the ear canal and wait for crust to soften. Then fill a rubber ear-cleaning syringe with equal parts of warm water and white vinegar and gently flush the debris out of the ear.

GET A DROP ON THEM: Once your pets ears are clean, vets usually recommend putting a few drops of an OTC medication containing pyrethrins..this is an insecticide made from chrysanthemums. You can purchase medicated at pet stores. Place the drops in each ear according to direction on bottle, the massage the base of the ears for 3-5 minutes to allow the medicine to penetrate.

TRY AN OIL TREATMENT: Instead of using medications, you may want to try mineral oil or baby oil once every day or so. This will smother some of the mites. Heat the oil til it just warm to the touch, fill a dropper with with just enough oil to coat the ear canal.

GO ITALIAN: Garlic and olive oil aren't just for pizza--they can sooth the itch of mites as well. Crush 4 cloves of gaarlic into one cup of olive oil, let sit overnight, then discard the garlic gloves...heat the oil til warm to the touch and place several drops into pets ears..repeat as often as necessary.

STOP THE CYCLE: Ear mites can travel from pet to pet, so if one of your pets has been infected, chances are good all your pets have them...treat all animals at the same time.

BE PERSISTENT: It takes about 3 weeks for a mite to undergo the transition from egg to a major pain in your pets ears, regardless of the treatment you choose, it is important to keep treating your pet through the entire 3 week period in order to eradicate present and future generations.

FROM QUEEN SISSY: There is now a one-time treatment for ear mites. It is Acarexx.

TOMORROW: Fighting!!! Keep them suggestions coming in!!!

Good afternoon kitties!!! Today's topic is all about those nasty UTI's. Suggested by HT Jesse cause he gets them!!!

She used to go all day without a break, but lately your pent-up pet can hardly wait to go outside. And no sooner does she got out and she wants back in, then has to go out again. UTI's aren't just the 'bane' of bathroom hopping humans, kitties and dogs can get them, too. UTI's make it difficult to urinate. What's more, the inside of the urinary tract can get painfully inflamed.

POUR SOME JUICE: It's a home remedy for people that also works for pets. Cranberry juice, orange juice and other citrus juices boost the acidity of urine, reducing the number of bacteria and helping relieve discomfort. The problem with juices is getting your pet to actually drink it. Try mixing an ounce in with her breakfast food. You can TRY to put out a bowl and see what happens.

PROVIDE FREQUENT POTTY BREAKS: When urine remains in the bladder for a long time, any bacteria that happen to be floating around have more time to multiply, causing infection levels to rise. A pet that only urinates 2 times a day will more likely develop an infection more then one that goes 10 times a day.

ASK FOR ASSISTANCE: DOGS ONLY: Your dog may have great control, but if the only time she gets to go outside is before work and after work, bacteria have plenty of time to do their dirty work. If you can't get home during the day perhaps you can ask a neighbor to let her out for you.

GET THOSE PAWS MOVING: Most dogs and cats can't go around the block without making a deposit. Taking at least two 20 minute walks a day will increase urination and reduce the risk of infection.

WHEN TO SEE HER VET: While most UTI's will clear up on their own even without treatment, occasionally bacteria will swim upstream, causing a dangerous kidney infection.
Symptoms of Kidney infection include frequent or difficult urination and possible blood in the urine. Some pets get feverish and lethargic.
Don't take chances if you notice any changes in your pets normal urinary habits. She may need oral antibiotics to prevent a small infection form turning into a major problem.

Follow the Vets advice and always follow label instructions on any medication..The best time to give antibiotics is right after urination.

Keep them suggestions coming in!! Tomorrow: EAR MITES

Good morning kitties! Today: The "EYES" have it: "EYE IRRITATIONS"

Your cats is spending more time pawing her crusty eyes then playing with her catnip toys. One of the most common eye problems in pets is conjunctivitis. {Our AJ had this}. Also know as 'pink-eye', it is an inflammation of the membrane covering the inside of the eyelids and the front of the eye.

WIPE IT OUT: To speed healing and make your pet more comfortable, you'll want to clean the discharge from her eyelids. Wet a wet cloth or a cotton ball with warm water, squeeze it out and gently wipe the 'goop' from around your pets eye. Repeat twice daily or as often as needed.

TRY A SCRUB: Instead of using water, you may want to try to OTC eye scrub. Eye scrubs are pH Balanced and may cause less stinging then water. You can buy eye scrubs at your local pet retailer, ones made for humans can be more harsh for your pet.

HELP HIM SHED SOME TEARS: While eye scrubs can help keep the lids clean, you'll also want to wash the surface of the eye. A Good way to do this is with artificial tears, which can help wash away particles that may be causing the problem.

CODDLE HER WITH A COMPRESS: Covering your pets eyes with a damp warm compress can be very soothing. Wet a soft cloth in lukewarm water, wring it out and gently hold it across her eyes for five minutes. This can make your pets eyes feel much better, and it goes a long way toward keeping her eyes clean.

TAKE HIM TO THE BARBER: Regular grooming can help prevent eye irritations before they get started. Fur in your pets eyes can cause irritation that can lead to conjunctivitis if its matted up around the corners of the eye. Brushing the hair back away from the eyes or getting a groomer to cut off the excess hair will prevent irritations.

WHEN TO SEE THE VET: While conjunctivitis isn't difficult to treat, and eye infection can result in permanent damage, so you'll want to see vet at the 1st sign of problems...he may give you eye drops, or an ointment for the eye or a mild antibiotic if the eye is infected. {our Vet gave AJ an ointment to use 2 times daily}

KEEP The suggestions coming in!! TOMORROW: The "EYES" have it, part 2: VISION PROBLEMS!!!

KELS KAT REMEDIES
Good Morning. Today's topic: SPRAYING..suggested by my baby brother, Winston..we have Jesse who sprays everything in site {yes he is 'fixed'}

Has your formerly fastidious feline suddenly taken to spraying the house, despite having a perfectly good litterbox down the hall? Don't fret too much, spraying has nothing to do with going to the bathroom.

It is a way to identify his property and covering other scents left by cats...it's your cats way of reassuring himself that he belongs and that he is owner of what he sprays.

SPARE THE ROD: Even if you happen to catch kitty in the act, punishing definitely will NOT work. It is a natural innate behavior in cats and punishing him will not make it stop.

PROVIDE SEPARATE QUARTERS: It's not uncommon for cats to spray when they feel they are competing with other pets in the home. Try keeping them separated in different rooms and show the spraying cat lots of extra attention, make him feel he is wanted and not competing for your attention.

LICK THE PROBLEM: It's natural for cats to groom each other, and once they get started they can literally wash away bad feelings. Once or twice a week, wipe down all your cats with a wet towel. After grooming themselves, they may begin grooming each other, this will keep their aggression and spraying under control.

GIVE THEM EQUAL TIME: Paying more attention to one cat then another will often foster feelings of jealousy and competition. Try petting or stroking all your cats together or at the same time--providing they are all in one spot--. This will increase their social interaction and reduce competition, and maybe he will stop spraying.

CREATE A "NO SPRAY" ZONE: If your cat is repeatedly spraying in the same spot, applying a pet repellent may help turn him away. Many vets recommend repellents containing bitter apple or you may use mothballs, which are stronger.

DO A DEEP CLEANING: If you've recent;y moved and your cat started spraying, it could be traces of a former 'tenant' lingering behind. Scrub the floors, walls and rugs with a combination enzyme and bacteria cleaner, like "Outright Pet Odor Eliminator", there are many different kinds available at Pet retailers. Enzymes in the cleaners dissolve the urine crystals.

KEEP HIM CALM: Cats sometimes spray in response to change. Keeping his schedule consistent will help prevent problems before they start. Always keep his bed and litter box in the same places and always feed him in the same place, keep kitty to a routine.

PRACTICE PREVENTION: 90% of MALES that spray will stop entirely when you get them neutered. Vets recommend neutering/spaying at about 6 months or younger.

WHEN TO SEE HIS VET: Most cats spray to mark territory. Sometimes, however, it can be a warning sign that something serious is wrong, like diabetes, blocked urethra or a UTI...if you suspect any trouble or notice him straining to urinate....see his vet.

TOMORRO: EYE IRRITATIONS
