Well, it's pretty much official. Thunderclan will be a playing team again. Please let me know if you still want to be on the team. The season doesn't start til October. The Myrtles Plantation is called "One of America's Most Haunted Homes". The Myrtles Plantation, circa 1796, invites one to step into the past to experience antebellum splendor. Wolfie and Maggie see fine antiques and architectural treasures of the South and discover why The Myrtles has been called one of "America's Most Haunted Homes". The Myrtles has been featured in New York Times, Forbes, Gourmet, Veranda, Travel and Leisure, Country Inns, Colonial Homes, Delta SKY and on the Oprah Show, A & E, the History Channel, The Travel Channel, The Learning Channel, National Geographic Explorer, and GOOD MORNING AMERICA. It was also featured in The Haunting of Louisiana. The history of the South will always provide us with tales of romance and mystery. The saga of the Antebellum South and a lifestyle that will never be forgotten lives on at this grand mansion. Hi Poodles and Family,
Today Maggie and Wolfie will be visiting the lovely grounds and home of the Oakley Plantation where John James Audubon filled his sketch pad with notes and drawings for his famous series of bird illustrations within this peaceful environ. Audubon came upriver from New Orleans to do more than paint pictures. He had been hired to teach drawing to Miss Eliza Pirrie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Pirrie, owners of Oakley. His teacher-artist arrangement was short-lived due to a misunderstanding with Mrs. Pirrie. Only four months after his arrival, Audubon returned to New Orleans. Although there is no record of his success in teaching Miss Pirrie to draw, in his personal endeavors he completed or began 32 bird paintings while at Oakley. Oakley House is a tall, airy house and is a splendid example of colonial architecture adapted to its climate. Built circa 1806, Oakley predates the relatively heavy details of classic revival in Southern plantation homes and claims distinction for its beautiful simplicity. The rooms of Oakley have been restored in the style of the late Federal Period (1790-1830), reflecting their appearance when Audubon stayed there. A West Indies influence can be seen in the jalousied galleries which allow cool breezes to drift through the rooms while keeping out rain and the glare of the sun. Adam mantels, delicate decoration of the exterior gallery stairs and a simple cornice frieze are Oakley's only ornaments. Simple and dignified by its unusual height, the building seems a suitable part of its beautiful forest setting. In 1973, Oakley House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, an honorary designation for significant historic sites. The large, detached plantation kitchen, typical of the period, was reconstructed on the old foundations, around the original chimney. The kitchen building also contains a weaving room and an ironing/wash room. Two slave cabins, located a short distance from the rear of the house, give a glimpse into the laborers' way of life on the plantation. Restored formal and kitchen gardens adjacent to the house demonstrate the early Louisiana plantation owners' tendency to re-create formal beauty in their wilderness environment. Wolfie turns to Maggie and says in awe what a magnificent home this was, can you imagine living surrounded by such beauty and grandeur? Maggie says no as she leans her head on Wolfie’s shoulder as they gaze up at the lovely mansion. Hey Poodles!
Nope! You are not losing your mind. Occasionally it happens that way. When Dean was catpaigning for me I ended up with my first COTD a day early. That was a surprise too. As long as it doesn't mess anyone else up. A couple times the cat running for COTM ended up with COTD too because it had been a year and they were eligible again. Freaky! Today we had rain again. Mom says it seems like April since we have gotten so much rain lately. But better too much, than not enough. Soon enough it will get real hot and we will be wishing for rain! MOL. Nothing much new here. Rainy days are good days for napping. Leaving you a vote. Peace and love. Have a purrfect evening. Right you are! We catpaigned for V & M for COTD on Wednesday but they got it Tuesday instead! Thank Goodness I didn't ruin their day. Not sure how I got it. Hi Poodles
Please let me know about COTD on the 21st as soon as you can. TGIF!! That's what one is supposed to say on Fridays but I am not a happy boy today because it's raining! And it's been raining for three days now. Though, it did clear up enough for me to get my walks in on Wednesday. Not so yesterday or today. What's an outdoor loving cat to do? *Sigh* Mom has to get her stitches out today and said she’ll go and rent some movies for us to watch afterwards and we can snuggle on the couch. Hmmm...sounds like a pretty good plan to me! I hope everyone else is enjoying nice weather. Mom says we really need the rain, which is fine, but why can't it just rain at night while we're sleeping? We don't need it day and night do we? I will never understand Mother Nature. MOL. Congrats and Happy First Birthday to Lola 131462, our COTD. We are swimming by with your Friday vote. We’ve arranged for an open pool party at our house tonight, so PLEASE feel free to stop by. There will be towels, pool noodles/toys, inflated rings/rafts, and plenty of water blasters located in the blue bin on our covered deck. Mom set up special platters of munchies on the table, and in the cooler is cold catnip soda/catsip milk in case anyone is hungry or thirsty. Lounge by the pool with your favorite drink in paw. In the gazebo you can relax and watch bird or butterfly videos. Our Kitty Angels have agreed to light up the sky with their shinning stars and along with the lights in the pool, we’re all set. So put on your suit & jump in. The water is PURR-FECT! Thank you for getting back to me on your COTD. I must apologize - there has been a mix-up with dates. Can I schedule you for the 21st? Just one week later? I feel terrible as this has never happened before. Please let me know as soon as you can. I would appreciate it. Today is Auntie’s birthday and I have been helping mom make her favorite cupcakes. Well, actually, if I were to be honest, I’ve been licking the icing from mom’s finger while she does all the technical work. But my job is important too. After all, mom could have somehow bought an expired, stale, yucky tub of frosting and how would she know before serving the dessert? The way I look at it, I’m really saving the day. Hehehehe. Auntie’s special friend is coming over for dinner – and yes, that means I will be under mom’s bed – but it will be a lovely evening. Congrats to Sampson 37802, our current COTD. Today, I salute Duchess, the beautiful white mama cat from the Aristocats. Happy Friday to you! I am a very happy boy today. Mom says she will be spending the day with us, relaxing, reading, napping and watching videos. Is that not the best way to spend the day? She already warned us, tomorrow she will be going to the Farmers Market to find things for her garden and then she and auntie will be planting it. Mom usually does it herself but with her bandaged foot, it would take her forever so, she is accepting help. I will be supervising from the deck while Jinx and the kittens will be watching from the windows. It'll be nice. Let me know about your potential COTD run, okay. You are not going to believe what I saw out my window last night. Some of you remember Jinx telling you of Bruno, a chocolate lab who lives 3 doors down from us. Anyway, his pawents brought him outside, opened the trunk of their car and “handed” him a bag of chips. He clamped his teeth around it and carried it inside the house before coming out for more things. Mom was fascinated and went over to talk to his folks. They said Bruno enjoys helping them carry the groceries in so they give him one thing at a time. Can you believe that? How undignified. Now I, on the other paw, expect mom to work for, buy, carry in and serve my food like a proper servant. MOL Congrats to Angel KitKit 80364, our Angel Cat of the day. Today is the anniversary of his crossing – what a lovely way to honor him. Please stop on by Beacon’s page 96770 and leave him a vote for his badge. Today, I salute Scarlett. I’m sure many of you have heard of this former stray who, in 1996 suffered serious burns and injuries to save her 5 babies from a burning building, one by one. After their rescue, the only way Scarlett knew all her babies were out, was by touching them with her nose. Unfortunately, one kitten died from a virus but the other 4 survived and all were eventually adopted. Scarlett crossed the Rainbow Bridge on October 11, 2008 but what an amazing life she had!
