Mom is very upset. She does not have an ipod or ipad or iphone or any ithing! We love CC just the way it is! Don't understand why they have to screw with it! Hoping things will not be totally ruined for us. Snowed yesterday & was rainy today. It was slippery this morning when Mom took the garbage out. Tomorow they are saying 100% chance of 2-4 " of snow! Yike! Can't wait til winter is over! I know it just started but we hate the cold & snow. Leaving a vote. Peace & love. Have a purrfect evening. Kitty Kisses. Dean

Hello Sunni
We are simply devastated by the sad mews that I5 Publishing is doing away with Cat Channel in January. We have been members here for 7 years, since November 2006. We have shared many laughs & tears, good times & bad times and our daily lives. We have seen many changes on CC in those seven years, but we never dreamed they would completely take this away from us.

Most of us lead super busy lives and enjoyed CC because it is all about fun & furiendships, plus it’s an escape from the real world. Here, we found others who love their babies just as much as Mommy loves us. We will stick around to the end of CC, and then we will see what the future holds. Mommy despises FB and will not join, so that is not an option. No matter what, just remember:

“The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other’s life.”

Thank you for being a part of our family. We feel blessed to have met each & every one of you.
Hugs,
Q MerryBelle & Mommy Angela

P.S. Thanks for your email address. Mommy emailed your Mom this morning.

The Ultimate Cat Treat Cookbook:
Treats and Tidbits: Foods to Avoid
Not all foods that people eat are good for cats. Chocolate, that wonderful food, is potentially toxic for cats. Luckily, most cats are not attracted to it. To be safe, keep it out of reach. Onions, raisins, grapes, and macadamia nuts are not good for cats, either. Nor are caffeine and alcohol. And although raw fish seems to be a wonderful, natural food for cats, many veterinarians don’t recommend it. There are potential problems with it, including parasites, so cook fish before feeding it to your cat.

Kitty Pawsons Here! I took a wild shot with my croquet mallet and while I was looking in the bushes for the errant ball, I caught wind of a juicy story. A kitty couple were talking about a Royal who used to be a bit of a klutz! They fell in the toilet, in the washing machine as it was filling up, and in the bath tub while their Mom was in it. Do we think this Royal just loves water…I think NOT! Good thing the water this Royal deals with now is frozen! This is the same Royal who, when they were young, used to meow in distress when they couldn’t find Mom in the house. Now they just meow loudly because they are too darn lazy to go looking for her!
I’ll continue to report ‘em as I hear ‘em!

Day 31– Yum’s Yikes ‘n Yarns,
Sunni, thank you so much for my COTM vote today. Your support of my catpaign was greatly appreciated. You are a good furriend! Those sinkholes are scary no mater where they are - Florida or Texas!

Everyone has a favorite - my Mom is no different. On this final day of my catpaign, we want to share with you a little about our cat only Rescue Shelter…

Founded in 1992 St. Francis Animal Rescue Shelter is a volunteer run organization whose mission as a no-kill shelter is to rescue abandoned or unwanted cats and kittens in the community and provide them with food, love, medical care, and shelter for their entire lifetime either by housing them at the rescue or through placing them with adoptive owners.

St. Francis supports local spay or neuter programs, and educates people about the joys & responsibilities of pet ownership. They provide volunteers with food to feed local feral colonies & have teamed with local volunteer trappers to spay or neuter the ferals in our community.

No-Kill Is Not Really No-Kill
In 1994, San Francisco, CA was the FIRST in the nation to end euthanasia of healthy adoptable dogs and cats. Since that time the state of California has passed legislation to further define “No-Kill” as:
Adoptable animals include only those animals eight weeks of age or older that, at or subsequent to the time the animal is impounded or otherwise taken into possession, have manifested no sign of a behavioral or temperamental defect that could pose a health or safety risk or otherwise make the animal unsuitable for placement as a pet….

At St. Francis, no-kill really means no-kill. Cats are never euthanized based on temperament. The only cats euthanized for illness are those who no longer have any quality of life due to pain from an untreatable illness. They attempt to find hospice care for terminally ill cats so they can enjoy their final days in a loving home rather than in a shelter with a countless number of roommates.

St. Francis has close to 150 permanent resident cats at the shelter. Many are feral, have behavioral issues, and health problems – all of which prevent them from being adopted. To address their care, they offer an In-House Adoption Program; as well as, a Medical Angel Program which provides medications and defrays the cost of treatments for the shelter’s elderly and younger felines with health issues through donations. Cordelia and Lari are Mom’s In-House Adoption kitties.

St. Francis foster parent volunteers care for young kittens until they are old enough to be adopted. The foster provides the TLC & the shelter provides the kittens & supplies. Mom can’t do this – she would be a failure as she would want to adopt all of them!

Day 29 – Yum’s Yikes ‘n Yarns,
Sunni, thank you so much for my COTM vote today and support. I have been practicing my Royal paw wave but I don't have it down pat yet!

Today we are going to talk about Sinkholes. When we visited Warm Mineral Springs, I mentioned it is a sinkhole! Are you familiar with them? We certainly are here in Florida!

Sinkholes are an increasingly deadly risk in Florida, due primarily to the region's geology. The state is largely underlain by porous limestone, which can hold immense amounts of water in underground aquifers. As groundwater slowly flows through the limestone, it forms a landscape called karst, known for features like caves, springs and sinkholes.

The water in aquifers also exerts pressure on the limestone and helps to stabilize the overlying surface layer, usually clay, silt and sand in Florida. Sinkholes form when that layer of surface material caves in.
The collapse can be triggered by a heavy overload, often caused by a downpour or flooding, or when water gets pumped out of the ground. When water leaves the cavities within the limestone, the pressure that supported the surface material also goes. Depending on various factors, that overlying layer can give way abruptly.

Florida's groundwater has been disappearing rapidly as the state's population grows at breakneck speed. By 2015, Florida is expected to hit 20 million residents, making it the third-largest U.S. state. To satisfy a thirsty state's population, Florida has been aggressively pumping out groundwater, destabilizing its limestone bedrock and contributing to the growing number of sinkholes.

Nowhere is this more true than in "Sinkhole Alley," the rapidly growing region of west-central Florida surrounding Tampa Bay. Sinkholes can also occur naturally, but from 2006 to 2010, the number of sinkhole claims to Florida insurance companies tripled. Sinkholes are even more common in Florida during the winter months due to freezes, especially in January & February. This is when farmers pump groundwater onto crops, strawberries and oranges, to protect them from freezing. Florida sinkholes also peak in May & June, which are typically dry months with the year's lowest groundwater levels.

These factors, combined with unstable rainfall patterns make sinkholes an ever-increasing threat to Floridians. There are a few pictures of sinkholes in my gallery.

Tomorrow I will share a very sad story about a sinkhole that occurred in February of this year in Seffner Florida – about 55 miles from where Mom lives.

Day 27 – Yum’s Yikes ‘n Yarns,
Sunni, thank you for my COTM vote yesterday.

I told Mom…no more blogs like yesterday. I saw some of you yawning while you read the blog – that is if you didn't take a catnap before you got to the end of it. MOL Here’s a subject you might get a “charge” out of!

LIGHTNING

Do you experience a lot of lightning in the summertime? I live very close to Tampa, and we have lots of lightning.

Lightning is one of the leading weather-related causes of death and injury in the United States. Most people do not realize that they can be struck by lightning even when the center of a thunderstorm is 10 miles away with blue skies overhead.

Did you know that talking on the telephone is the leading cause of lightning injuries inside the home?

It is estimated that Earth as a whole is struck by an average of more than a hundred lightning bolts every second. The odds of becoming a lightning victim in the U.S. in any one year is 1 in 700,000. The odds of being struck in your lifetime is 1 in 3,000. Should I care about these facts?

Well, Tampa is labeled the lightning capital of the United States!

Why is Tampa labeled the lightning capital of the United States? There are some theories out there but no concrete reason why lightning in Tampa is so severe. In Florida, there is a path they call "Lightning alley", the path is from Tampa all the way to Daytona Beach. One reason there is plenty of lightning in Tampa is perhaps because Florida is so close to the equator. Not as close as other countries, but according to NASA, some maps show lightning occurs most often more near the equator than the poles.

Other rumors about why there is so much lightning in Tampa is because there are aliens in the Gulf of Mexico or even material in the soil around Tampa that causes lightning in Tampa to be more frequent. No one has a solid answer, but most answers I have seen are related to the sea breeze, humidity levels and the amount of heat Tampa experiences during the summer months. One thing is for certain; during the summer time there is lightning in Tampa, they call it the "summer time pattern" where almost every day during the summer you can expect to be in a thunderstorm. With the thunderstorms, there is usually always lightning in Tampa.

Tomorrow let’s take a true or false quiz to check our knowledge about this force of nature.

Day 19 – Yum’s Yikes ‘n Yarns,
Sunni, thank you so much for my COTM vote today, have a great weekend, and stay cool.

The next three days we’re going to visit Museums or Winter Homes of some famous people. Today we’re flying on the carpet to Palm Beach on the East Coast to visit….

FLAGLER MUSEUM

Henry Morrison Flagler, an American industrialist with an 8th grade education, was a founding partner & "the brains" behind Standard Oil. He was also a key figure in developing the eastern coast of Florida along the Atlantic Ocean & is largely known only as the founder of Palm Beach & father of Miami.

Whitehall, Flagler’s winter home, was purchased for $50,000 in 1893. He & his 3rd wife, Mary Lily, moved in on February 6, 1902. They would travel to Palm Beach each year in one of their own private railcars, No. 91, which is on exhibit. Whitehall was described by the New York Herald as “more wonderful than any palace in Europe, grander & more magnificent than any other private dwelling in the world." Whitehall established the Palm Beach social scene for the wealthy of America's Gilded Age.

Flagler died at 83 after falling down a flight of marble stairs at Whitehall. Mary Lily died four years later. In 1959, the site was saved from demolition by his granddaughter, Jean Flagler Matthews. She established the Museum honoring his life & Florida history in 1960.

Some of Flagler’s accomplishments are highlighted in the Museum –

Tourism – Henry & his 2nd wife traveled to St. Augustine in 1883 finding it lacking in adequate hotels & transportation. He believed that Florida had the potential to attract large numbers of tourists. Flagler build the Hotel Ponce de Leon in 1888; The Royal Poinciana Hotel at Lake Worth in 1894; The Palm Beach Inn (renamed The Breakers) in 1896; & Hotel Royal Palm in Miami 1897.

Over-Sea Railroad - Flagler, believing one day a canal would be built across the Isthmus of Panama, worked through the Florida legislature as early as 1891 to keep his options open for building a railroad to Key West.

Florida East Coast Railway - In 1912, marking the completion of the Over-Sea Railroad, the entire east coast of Florida, from Jacksonville to Key West, was linked by a single railroad system.

See pictures in my gallery and visit http://flaglermuseum.us to read about all of his accomplishments….

Day 13 – Yum’s Yikes ‘n Yarns,
Sunni, thank you for my COTM vote yesterday and your support.

By the way, have I mentioned July is National Park & Recreation Month. Over the next three days, we’re going to visit a special Park. Let me just say, my Mom found the history to be most fascinating; more so than the park itself! MOL So, since my Mom controls the reporting, she’ll be sharing what she wants about….

WEEKI WACHEE SPRINGS STATE PARK

If you thought mermaids were just the lively imaginings of lonely sailors, think again -- and visit Weeki Wachee Springs, the City of Live Mermaids, on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Located about 2 hours north of North Port at the crossroads of US 19 & SR 50.

It is an enchanted spring -- the only one of its kind in the world -- and one of Florida’s oldest and most unique roadside attractions. For almost 60 years, the fun, family-oriented park has lured in visitors with beautiful mermaids who swim in the cool, clear spring waters. Weeki Wachee Springs is a magical entrance into a mysterious blue underwater world of mermaids, manatees, turtles and bubbles. Sitting in the Mermaid Theater, visitors feel like they are inside the flowing spring, and are transported back to simpler times, before super theme parks and super highways appeared.

Here’s she goes with the history….

The Seminole Indians named the spring “Weeki Wachee,” which means “little spring” or “winding river.” The spring is so deep that the bottom has never been found. Each day, more than 117 million gallons of clear, fresh 74-degree water bubbles up out of subterranean caverns. Deep in the spring, the surge of the current is so strong that it can knock a scuba diver’s mask off. The basin of the spring is 100 feet wide with limestone sides and there, where the mermaids swim, 16 to 20 feet below the surface, the current runs a strong five miles an hour. It’s quite a feat for a mermaid to stay in one place in such a current.

In 1946, Newton Perry, a former U.S. Navy man who trained SEALS to swim underwater in World War II, scouted out Weeki Wachee as a good site for a new business. At the time, U.S. 19 was a small two-lane road. All the other roads were dirt; there were no gas stations, no grocery stores, and no movie theaters. More alligators and black bears lived in the area than humans. Newt experimented with underwater breathing hoses and invented a method of breathing underwater from a free-flowing air hose supplying oxygen from an air compressor, rather than from a tank strapped onto the back. With the air hose, humans could give the appearance of thriving twenty feet underwater with no breathing apparatus.

….continued tomorrow See some mermaid pictures in my gallery

♥My Dearest Fur Friend Sunni...♥
Mom and I hope from the bottom of our hearts this kitty letter finds you all doing very well. I´m so sorry for being gone for such a long time. Mommy has not much free time to be on her PC during these days, mostly because of her work and my sister Lola is the one who writes her CC blogs most of the times. I missed you much.

We´re having winter in Argentina and it has been raining during the entire week. We´ve been staying inside the house, playing and napping close to the heaters in the warmest places of our home. We miss going to our back yard but Mom says we can´t do that until Mr. Sun comes back. MOL! Our green parrots are gone because of the rains. Mom tell us they must be inside their nests keeping them dry and we hope to see them again soon as it´s always fun to stare at them.

Our parents have been taking care of our stray kitty friend, Misho, who had a very bad wound on his leg and paw. Mom was really worried about him but she´s glad to see he has been improving slowly and his wound looks a lot better now. He is still having antibiotics.

We wish you all a super purrfect weekend and we send you a huge bunch of whisker kisses and hugs...

Mote Marine Laboratory has been a leader in marine research since it was founded in 1955. Today we will visit the Aquarium at Mote Marine Laboratory to watch sea turtle hatchlings, dolphins and whales, and feed some sharks. The goal is for the sharks not to eat us, do we all agree on that?

The viewing window allows us to watch as the staff treat the sea turtle hatchlings that come to Mote each year during nesting season. We are going to see animal care staff weigh and measure each hatchling. We can also watch as they check for any injuries and prepare the turtles’ meals. After being checked, hatchlings that need further care are then admitted to the hospital and can be seen on exhibit in the habitat until they are returned to the wild.

Mote has been rehabbing dolphins and whales at their Sarasota, Fla.-based facilities since 1992. The goal is to provide the most humane treatment possible for live-stranded dolphins and whales, while also creating a better scientific understanding of these animals and their needs to support conservation of these species in the wild.

Ginger (see pictures in my gallery) came to Mote after stranding on a Florida beach. While in Mote's care, specially trained volunteers and staff spent 1,320 hours monitoring Ginger's condition, providing vital information to the medical team about her progress. Ginger also ate nearly 4,000 live pinfish — that's 35 pinfish fed five times a day at about $1 per fish. She was released to the wild in February 2009 and staff members continue to see her in the wild to this day.

And finally, let’s feed Mote’s sharks during Shark Encounter atop the 135,000-gallon shark habitat in Mote Aquarium. And don’t worry — the shark’s favorite food is fish! – not kitties….teehee

Up to three of us – who is going to join me? - can join Mote staff to prepare brunch for the sharks and large fish, including blacknose, nurse and sandbar sharks, southern stingrays, tarpon, snook, goliath grouper and more.

Time to leave…I look around and determine that all kitties are present and accounted for!

Day 8 – Yum’s Yikes ‘n Yarns,
Sunni, thank you so much for your vote and support.

You have met all of my fursibs. My Mom says 10 kitties is the limit!

I’m thinking many of you have heard of and been to Busch Gardens, Disney World, and/or Sea World here in Florida. Well, we have some other attractions that are not as famous but are great places to visit! The time has come for us to zip around the state of Florida visiting the lesser known attractions. I just got my magic carpet back, after a multi-point inspection, from Mr. Kitty Wrench. I’m pleased to report it is in tip-top flying shape! Today and tomorrow, we are going to visit attractions that WERE ONCE located in my hometown of North Port.

AMERICAN POLICE HALL OF FAME & MUSEUM – Titusville

The American Police Hall of Fame & Museum has been a favorite Florida attraction for decades, from former incarnations in North Port (1960 – 1989) (where I live) and Miami (1990 - 2002), to its new setting in Titusville, its most lavish thus far.

In 1955, Chief Gerald S. Arenberg was struck by a drunk driver and nearly killed. His experience inspired him to consider the ultimate sacrifice that many officers pay while serving and protecting our communities. He created a memorial for police officers killed in the line of duty – American Police Hall of Fame & Museum. This museum serves as an educational organization, a repository of police artifacts, and a memorial to 6,000 officers from around the country who lost their lives in the line of duty. An enormous Italian marble block stands in the center of the museum. On its wall are carved the names of fallen officers, along with their rank, state, and city.

The scope of American policing -- and the dangers of the modern world -- can be seen in the museum's range of exhibits. There are memorials to the Oklahoma City bombing and to 9-11; exhibits on counterfeiting and ways to identify corpses; displays of moonshine stills, radar guns, and body armor.

You can also have fun in the museum. There are police cars, motorcycle displays, jails, electric chairs, etc., even an indoor firing range where anyone can rent a pistol, and the museum has its own high-speed police helicopter providing air tours piloted by a sheriff’s deputy.

Visitors can have their photos taken in a jail cell, strapped into a fake electric chair, or sitting in a replica gas chamber. Picture this, AMMO sitting in the electric chair sweating “bullets” because I have my paw on the switch….teehee What will I do…throw that switch or give her a reprieve? I’m thinking, I’m thinking!!!

Day 6 - Yum’s Yikes ‘n Yarns,
Picture this, Mom building a wood and screen partition to put between the front and back of a rental van, loading 8 kitties into it, and driving non-stop to Florida. That’s what happened…we all, Oreo, Straye, Amber, me, Smoke, Asher, Riley and Blacktop arrived at our new home at 1:30p on March 20, 2005!

The house was much bigger than the apartment, it had a screened-in enclosure we could go out in, and a pool to try out – which we all did at least once!

Mom found a Shelter to support – St. Frances Animal Rescue of Venice. Well, one day Mom went to the Shelter to buy a T-shirt and make a donation. She came home with Alice and Zimba on December 3, 2008.

Alice (Mom renamed her to Ali) is a black & white short-haired kitty who was a drop-off at a vet’s office and turned into the Shelter. She was approximately 1 ½ years old. She had been at the Shelter two months. Ali was a biter, and the Shelter thought it would be hard to find someone to adopt her. Mom was willing to give her a chance. She is a sweet, lovable girl who seldom bites and gets along with all of us. Ali had a hurt paw that she would hold up in the air. She had been declawed. X-rays were taken and the vet thinks maybe damage had been done to a nerve and that is why she holds her paw up. Judging from the way she jumps and runs, it certainly doesn’t seem to hurt her. I think it is just an “attention getter!”

Zimba was a short-haired brown/orange/tabby who was about 8 years old. She had been adopted twice and returned to the Shelter due to health problems. Zimba had been at the Shelter 6 months at this point and Mom wanted to give her a happy home. She was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease which resulted in a large number of fluid filled cysts forming within her kidneys. Zimba was a sweet girl who adjusted very well to living with all of us. Mom held her close when she crossed Rainbow Bridge on December 30, 2011, from renal failure.

Mom stopped by the Shelter on May 19, 2009, so she could get directions to the landfill there in Venice. (Have you ever heard such a load of hooey!) Mom came home with two short-haired all black kitties - Muse and Merritt.

Muse was almost 4 years old and had lived at the Shelter since she was a kitten. Muse has the prettiest eyes…they are so dark sometimes you can’t see them. Now that I am gone, she sits on Mom’s lap as soon as Mom sits down.

Merritt was almost 1 year old and had lived at the Shelter since she was a kitten. During the day, she and Muse are inseparable unless Mom is on the couch. Merritt isn’t a lovey-dovey kitty but gets along well with the other kitties in the Clowder.

Before Ammie’s arrival, Muse, Merritt, and I slept with Mom at night.

Happy Summer hugs for you and your family. :) Hunting hunt bugs & lizards sounds fun! I saw a little snake from a window the other day. Mom saw it first when she went outside to water her flowers and "!" She got a little scared because it was right in front of her and it wasn't a garden hose. tee-hee.

Take care and have a safe week! Purrs, Arty

Hello Sunni
Thank you for your kind words, prayers & sweet thoughts. Like many of you, Mommy knows all too well about kidney disease. Her Dot passed away at the age of 17 from kidney disease & hyperthyroidism in October 2000. Mommy had hoped it would be a very long time before she was faced with this awful disease again. She will do her very best to give me the greatest care possible & lots of TLC.

I am eating the k/d canned and dry foods pretty well so far. Mommy says it is extremely difficult having one baby on a special diet. But we are doing our best with this situation & taking it one day at a time.

Thanks again for your prayers & concern. We really do appreciate it. Job 12:10 says “In God’s hands is the life of every creature.” We believe this to be true.

Love,

Hello Sunni
How are you? Yesterday I visited Dr. William for my annual checkup, blood work (CBC, 6-panel, T3 & T4), shots and 3-month Schirmer eye test. First the good news – my eyes are doing well.

Mommy’s intuition told her something was going on with me, so now the not-so-good mews. I am in the very early stages of kidney disease:
My BUN level = 38 (normal is 16-36)
My Creatinine = 2.6 (normal is .8-2.4)

Dr. William says we caught this early. For now, we are going to treat it by changing my diet to Prescription Diet k/d. So far, I am eating both the k/d canned and the k/d dry food. We will recheck my levels in 3 months.

I also have a UTI, so I am taking Clavamox, the wonder drug. My thyroid level (T4) is in the “grey area” so Dr. William sent some of my blood to Texas A&M so they can run a test called T4 by Equilibrium Dialysis. We should receive those results next week.

As you can imagine, Mommy is very upset, stressed, & worried about me. Please keep us in your prayers.
Hugs,
Q MerryBelle
