In the meantime, get out that toothbrush and some yummy-flavored cat toothpaste, and keep the luster in your cat's teeth.

"It's really important. Cats ... can't tell you what hurts them. Brushing their teeth is just as important as getting their shots," Gregory says.

Wow I never knew that dental health in a cat was so important. Thank you for the information. I've now decided to buy a toothbrush and cat toothpaste for my new kitten. Very helpful!

Kiki (3 year old) and Sadie (1 year old) brush their teeth at least 6 times a week. They have their own baby toothbrush and and their own toothpaste. Kiki likes mint flavor and Sadie likes malt flavor. Kiki is really good at it. Sadie is a little hyper sometimes. Tabs (7 year old) is another story. She does everything she can to get away from the toothbrush. She hated the toothpastes I use for the other kitties, but I found out she doesn't mind the taste of the poultry flavor toothpaste. I got her this morning though. I have to use a finger toothbrush in order to get into her mouth. It's a struggle and I can't get her every day. She hides if she sees me coming with something... She just had a cleaning done by the vet six months ago, so I would like to keep trying to clean her teeth so she doesn't have to go through that again anytime soon. This article is good for me. I can always use more tips. Thanks.

I am a certified vet tech in Tucson, AZ. We treat feline periodontal disease every day and client education is a huge part of our mission. I thought the article was excellent. My only suggestion is we should impress the importance of running pre-op blood on younger patients as well as older ones. Ideally, we would run blood and IV fluids for every single patient. Rachel
