ASPCA Winter Cat Care and Safety Tips

Winter weather can pose harm to your cat. Follow these tips from the ASPCA to keep your pet safe during cold months.

When the weather outside turns cold and snowy, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) reminds you to think about your pet's safety and recommends the following winter care tips to protect your companion animal:

1. Keep your cats inside. Outdoor cats can freeze, or become lost or stolen, injured or killed.

2. During the winter, outdoor cats sometimes sleep under car hoods for warmth. Before starting your car, bang loudly on the hood and wait a few seconds to give the cat a chance to escape.

3. Antifreeze, even in tiny doses, is a lethal poison for cats. Unfortunately, its sweet taste attracts animals to it. Thoroughly clean up spills from your vehicle. To prevent accidental poisoning, more and more people are using animal-friendly products that contain propylene glycol rather than traditional products containing ethylene glycol. Call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (1-888-4ANI-HELP) if you suspect your animal has been poisoned.

4. Never leave your pet alone in a car during the cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold. Your companion animal could freeze to death.

5. Make sure your pet has a warm place to sleep far away from drafts and off the floor. Consider a cat bed or basket with a warm blanket or pillow in it.

Tell ya what, Ferrel cats in a barn love those super dooper DRY blankets that volunteers bring in for them when they come on in with fresh water daily and hay and dry food AND you can ask the HSUS and Peta and many other organizations as to where to donate those old blankets you do not want anymore for the ferrel cats to curl up into for these cold winter months ahead. Pasado in Washington State can always use those blankets for their ferrel areas and so can the place in Utah for their cat refuge. It is not "normal " for a domestic to be kept outside during the winter months and stormy days, no matter where you live at without giving the animal some sort of shelter. Even the alaskan husky in Alaska has some sort of hut to sleep in and he has fur to show for his efforts as a snow dog too. HOWEVER, we are talking cats here, CATS! Cats really, REALLY need shelter, from rain, snow, temperatures that kill humans, normal dogs, I mean logically a cat is a predator who loves warm blankets and a bowl of tuna now and than without the drama of snow on its nose and high winds on its tail, right. Lovingly said, cats are sweet , purring babes who absolutely need to be treated better than many people have decided to by throwing them out side everytime a furball gets yakked out.SO, buck up and give the cat a place on the couch by the fireplace. I have yet, to throw a human being out of my place for throwing up, [ should have ] a cat deserves a warm spot in my house always. Humans deserve a gerbil wheel.[ humph ] :)
