Time to Neuter Eager Kitten

Five months is a great age for this important veterinary procedure.

Q. We have a 5-month-old kitten named Rascal. What age is best to neuter him? He's a personable cat, but he's driving our 9-year-old female cat crazy.

A. Now is a perfect time to neuter Rascal. Several studies support neutering at an early age, even as early as 6 weeks, with no particular associated problems.

He may still chase your female cat around for a while, but in the long run, he'll settle down and eventually give his friend some peace and quiet.

Maximus has just turned 5 months. I had always thought that cats couldn't be spayed/neutered before 6 months.....then again, it's been a good 20 years since I had a kitten. My rescue kitties (Max is also a rescue kitten) were adults when I took them in and were either already spayed by the foster/rescue folks or by a previous owner. I hope this helps Max settle down...his penchant for jumping on Jeeks' (his adult mentor) back and trying to hitch a ride around the house as if she were a horse is driving her insane.

My husband wants me to wait until he goes back to Iraq after his R&R is finished....something about him not wanting to have to see ole Max "come back a eunuch". (LOL...he's joking.....he and I are firm believers in spaying/neutering our pets.)

I sure wish more people would nueter/apay their pets, it would sure help the pet overpopulation
