Pet Camp's employees all have ample experience, both volunteer and professional, working with animals, and genuinely seem to love cats. Klaiman says they frequently eat lunch in the cats' room so they can visit with them on their breaks. Senior staff members take veterinary technology courses and are knowledgeable in administering medications. An emergency veterinarian is always on call. Like pet sitters, boarding facilities require advance reservations.
Not all ABKA-accredited facilities provide the services Pet Camp does, but each is expected to adhere to a code of ethics and more than 200 detailed requirements reflecting the views of operators, veterinarians, pet owners and humane organizations. Participating facilities must submit detailed information about their animal-care procedures to ABKA.
Klaiman believes other kennels will follow Pet Camp's lead in the years to come. "I think more and more younger people are getting involved in this business, and they're doing it because they really love animals," he says. "People come back to us again and again, because they know we really care."
