Stitch gobbles up his adoptiversary treat. |
On May 5, 2006, I walked into the
cat shelter wanting to find a furry friend to bring home with me. It had been about seven years since I had a cat in the house and I missed having that companionship. That was the day I met Stitch. He was labeled as an independent cat. He was about 3 years old and had been at the shelter for a little over a month. I knew he was the cat for me, especially after we got the chance to meet in the shelter’s meeting room and he just about jumped on my lap.
Four years later he is still a rather independent cat, but he definitely enjoys snuggling up on my lap while I work or watch TV. He and I have developed a great bond with each other. And now that the family has grown to include four others, he’s starting to warm up to each of them.
On Wednesday, May 5, we celebrated Stitch’s four-year-adoptiversary. I’ve started to tell the boys that it’s Stitch’s birthday though because they seem more able to grasp the concept of Stitch being another year older than how many years he’s been living with me.
We celebrated by presenting him with a new cat toy. Stitch showed much appreciation and immediately started biting and batting at the feathered end. The real surprise happened when Tristan placed a special wet food snack for Stitch in his bowl. And while Stitch chowed down, we sang “Happy Birthday” to him.
I found it rather cute how the boys greeted Stitch with calls of “Happy Birthday Stitch” all day long from morning till bedtime. And while Tristan and I went out to buy Stitch’s gifts, he told anyone who would listen that it was Stitch’s birthday.
Do you celebrate your cat’s birthday or adoptiversary? If so, how do you celebrate the occasion?
