Stitch Has a Squirrel Friend

Crystal Apilado's cat is fascinated with his outdoor buddy.

One day I was working on a wedding project and Stitch was sitting in the window enjoying the sunshine. And then I heard barking. It was weird barking though. It didn’t sound like any dog I had ever heard and it sounded close like it was right outside our front door (we live on the second story of our building).

Then I heard a light fluttery “Me-ahahah. Me-ahahah.”

Davis must have heard the barking too because he looked up from the book he was reading. We both turned around to look at Stitch, who was now sitting up and calling out the window. I walked over and Stitch suddenly turned around. He seemed quite embarrassed, as if I had caught him doing something he wasn’t supposed to be doing. I looked out the window and there sitting in the tree branch outside our window was a squirrel. It was a big squirrel and it was barking at my cat.

“Aww, do you have a squirrel friend, Stitch?” I asked him. I must admit Davis and I both had a good giggle at this. It might be my imagination but I’m pretty sure that Stitch responded with a good stoic cat glare. Davis came up next to him to look at the squirre too. Stitch pretended that Davis was the most interesting person ever and continued to ignore the squirrel. From the insistent barking and because the squirrel’s volume got louder it seemed that the squirrel was angry with Stitch for suddenly ignoring it.

The squirrel has come back quite a few times now. He sits outside the window and barks loudly for Stitch. I’m not sure if he’s trying to be friendly or if he’s trying to challenge Stitch to a good fight or maybe he’s trying to see if Stitch will hook him up with some food. But Stitch still seems embarrassed about having a squirrel friend. He turns his back on the squirrel the minute he realizes I’m watching the interaction. And on occasion he will even jump down from the window and give me an “I don’t know that squirrel” look. I’ve been trying to explain that I’m OK with him having a squirrel friend.

Do any of your cats have wildlife friends? Perhaps it will help me convince Stitch to not be so embarrassed if he knew that other kitties have outside friends, too.

My kitty wrestles with my dog. Wildlife, however, he feels should be eaten by him!

My cat lives only indoors, but she is friends with the 3 dogs that are there as well. Enemies are more than Friends, they sleep together every once in a while.

My four love to watch the window bird feeder I have. I don't think they want to be friends though.
