Stitch Knocked Down My Ornament

'Tis the season and we have put up our Christmas tree.

Stitch and ornament
We got a cute little 4-foot-something tree and have put our homemade ornaments on it. Usually, with past bigger trees at my parent’s house, we established a “cat line” that breakable ornaments aren’t allowed to be below. However, with such a little tree there isn’t much of a span to establish a cat line.

All of our homemade glass bulbs that we painted last year are up near the top. Stitch has already informed me twice now that he has chosen one to be his, and that he has the authority to play with it. Once he's caught, there has been some light patting followed by a firm “No Stitch.”  I think he enjoys the thrill of getting caught because he only plays with it when I’m standing in the kitchen and have full view of this one ornament. I have yet to find it or any others on the ground come morning, yet, so he’s not playing with it when I’m not watching.

This year we painted wooden stars and pasted our photos on them. These are not as breakable so they’ve been hung a little bit lower. And one has already felt the wrath of cat paw. It has only happened once so I think it might have been Stitch’s way of making a statement that he was angry with me because I would rather sit in on a conference call meeting instead of pet him.

Let me explain: There I was, sitting on the phone during a meeting one morning. Stitch was on my lap but he wanted me to pet him with the hand that was holding the phone by trying to rub his head up on it. This resulted in him getting dismissed from my lap.

After the meeting I went to the kitchen to get another cup of coffee. And there on the floor was mine and Kevin’s shared ornament. And not even a foot away was Stitch. He was lying on the floor with his back to me. He was obviously not pleased with my actions. I asked him if he knocked it off the tree. Stitch looked at the ornament and then gave me a look that clearly stated “I did. What are you going to do about it?” So what did I do? I picked it up and put it back on tree. What else was I going to do?

Did he do it out of spite? Did he choose my ornament over Tristan’s ornament on purpose? I think he was definitely trying to make a statement. But it might all be speculation on my part. You can be the judge. But it hasn’t happened since. I’ll be sure to keep an eye open though, in case I anger him again.

Set-up the Christmas tree and grab the video camera! Mine work as a tag-team.
