That’s News to Me!

By Susan Logan
Editor of and CAT FANCY magazine

CAT FANCY and CatChannel Editor Susan Logan blogs about the recent rumor that the magazine endorses John McCain.

I tell CAT FANCY’s Managing Editor Annie Shirreffs to call me while I’m on vacation if something unusual comes up, otherwise she can handle everything until I return to the office. So when I saw her number pop up on my cell phone while I was having lunch with my parents, I picked up. “Here’s something unusual for you,” she said after asking me how my trip was going. Oh no, I thought. Why always while I’m on vacation? I braced myself as she continued.

“My mom called last night to tell me she had been watching MSNBC and they were talking about the elections and different publications that were backing the candidates. Apparently, CAT FANCY was on the list of those backing McCain. Do you have any clue where MSNBC got the information?”

In the five years I’ve worked on the magazine, we have never made a statement on where we stand on political issues and we certainly don’t endorse candidates. We run stories on people, including politicians, who make a difference for cats no matter what their political affiliation and we even posted a story on CatChannel last year titled “Presidential Candidates’ Pets.” McCain had 22, the most of any politician mentioned.

Even though there is no truth to the statement that Annie’s mom and some of our readers heard on MSNBC TV, I’m quite entertained by this and other rumors associated with CAT FANCY and major events. One of our advertisers heard on a St. Louis radio station during the Beijing Olympics that CAT FANCY was running a photo of Michael Phelps on its cover. When I stopped laughing, I thought maybe that wasn’t such a bad idea. Too bad Phelps is a dog person!

Well having 22 pets that are well cared for must count for something.
