I remember the first time I saw Bob Walker and Frances Mooney’s book called "The Cat’s House" I was totally blown away by their creativity and ideas. Who knew that an ordinary suburban house could be turned in to such a fabulous feline fun zone?
The Cat's House in San Diego.
Bob and Frances created 140 feet of fun space by thinking vertically and giving their cats access to nooks and crannies that no one had ever thought of before. In fact, although they didn’t know it at the time, they were paving the way for the feline enrichment movement that is such an important part of every domestic cat’s life today and many of the products that Fudge and the team get to test.
It was a couple of years before I actually got to meet them. It was friendship at first sight and we have remained in touch ever since.
I was devastated when I got an email a few months back to say that they were considering selling and moving to the East Coast. The Cat’s House, their home in San Diego, has become a landmark and tourist attraction over the years. So I was thrilled when I learned they had changed their minds and in fact were holding their first open house in six years.
If you are a cat lover, you’ve gotta be there! What’s more, the occasion is to raise funds for the FACE Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides financial aid to animal owners who are unable to partially or fully cover the cost of their pet's emergency or critical care.
The number of people who cannot afford critical medical care for their sick or injured pet is growing at an alarming rate. Consequently so is what is being labeled "economic euthanasia," in which beloved companions are euthanized because their owners cannot afford the often-unexpected cost of treatment needed to save their lives. So this open house is for a great cause.
Last time Bob and France held an open house, 900 people visited in four hours! Tickets only cost $5. However, there is a special preview and behind-the-scenes tour for $50 a couple. The dates: Saturday, April 17, for the preview and Sunday, April 18, for the official event.
Go to the FACE Foundation's website for more information. As Bob Barker would say, “Come on down!” I will be there, that’s for sure!
