Tales From the Pet Expo

Rescue groups help purebreds, like Sylvester the Siamese, find new homes.

Siamese
Sylvester and Kristi from Southern California Siamese Rescue helped me with my presentation.
Last weekend I had the opportunity to attend America’s Family Pet Expo. I was asked by the CAT FANCY editors to give a brief talk on why cats make great family pets. This is a subject near and dear to my heart, so I had no problem filling up my time with advice for bringing a new pet cat into a home.

To help me in my presentation, I “borrowed” a Siamese kitty from the Southern California Siamese Rescue organization.  Kristi from the organization generously offered to bring Sylvester over to the staging area and showed him nicely during the presentation.

Sylvester is being fostered by members of the group and will soon be looking for his forever home. Although he is a little shy, he was a trooper during the presentation. He allowed kids, under supervision, of course, to come up and pet him. We kept him on a harness during the presentation so there was no chance that he could escape.

One of the best aspects of the show, in my opinion, is that many pets find permanent homes. I personally met at least five people that adopted dogs at the show and I talked to several organizations that also found homes for cats, bunnies and other pets.

If you are looking for a purebred pet, please consider the breed rescue organizations, like the Southern California Siamese Rescue. They have kittens and older kitties that through no fault of their own, need a new home. The groups also need people to foster, so if you have space and resources, please consider it.
