The Kissymow Vocabulary

Cat lover and CAT FANCY Consumer Marketing Manager Suzanne Stowe blogs about a secret language that only she, her family and her kitties understand.

Suzanne Stowe's Siamese cat, Zooey
Zooey is Suzanne Stowe's very cute Meezer kissymow — to put it in terms of Stowe's personal kitty language
.
My parents had cats before they had me. All my life, I have shared a household with cats and could not imagine a life without them. Over the years, my family and I have developed words for common cat-related items. We don’t know if the cats understand our language, but they do react appropriately to these words.

Many of the words were developed by adding “ies” to the end. Cat respond well to vowel sounds, particularly a long e. My cats all have names that end in that sound: Chloe, Zooey and Baby.

Here is the official Kissymow Vocabulary:

  • Kissymow – cat
  • Kiss Kiss – cat
  • Kiki –cat
  • Sing – cat, particularly Siamese
  • Meezers – Siamese cats
  • Chewsies – cat food or dinner
  • Treaties – cat treats
  • Toenies – claws
  • Nailwells – claws
  • Puddies – kneading or making biscuits
  • Toofies – cat teeth

I don’t think we are the only family that has developed a new vocabulary to talk to their beloved pets. If you have your own words, please share them in the comment section. In the meantime, pet your kissymow and allow them to make puddies in your lap.

I don't talk in a different "language" to my cats. I use regular words and they respond like they should. I just say treats, food, water, etc... I agree with the others, it seems kind of silly. But to each his own.

Sounds strange. I talk normal to my cats. Whether they understand who knows. I f you repeat something often enough maybe the understand.
