Charlie was adopted last year; he gets along great with Eggtishas, the rabbit, below. |

I grew up in a household that included two dogs and two cats, and all the pets got along. They would chase each other around the house, groom each other, and sleep together on my bed. They never harmed each other in any way. This seemed perfectly natural to me, but I have found that many people find it unusual.
When I buy cat and dog food at the store, clerks often ask me about having cats and a dog in the same household, like they have never seen it before.
Cats have been shown to develop strong bonds across many species. Koko, a gorilla, had at least two pet kittens and showed true love for them. Some cats befriend squirrels, rats and other animals that are usually seen as prey. I have pet-sit for many clients that had cats, birds, dogs, rabbits, and other animals as part of their household, and all the animals co-existed peacefully.
A friend at work has a wonderful bunny named Eggtishas (named because of the shape of her head). Last year, she adopted a stray kitten and named him Charlie. Charlie is a handsome black-and-white boy with a great personality.
Charlie and Eggtishas have become buddies. Charlie likes to go into the rabbit’s cage and groom her. They sleep with their arms around each other. While some people might think theirs is an unlikely companionship, obviously it works for them.
Do your cats have any unusual buddies?
